Yogi: A monk with a difference

0

Uttar Pradesh, a state having largest population among all the states in India. Twenty two crore plus population equivalent to population of several countries of Europe, 2/3rd of USA, double the population of Maharashtra, 6 times the population of Kerala, 2.3 times the population of West Bengal. Leading such a big state with multiple challenges is not an easy job.

What turned a “Bimaru” state to a socio-economically progressive state?

Let’s see who pioneered it and what changes we are noticing in last 4 years of Yogi government.

When BJP won assembly elections in year 2017 with massive mandate, nobody thought that Yogi Adityanath would be given such a big responsibility. Many opposition leaders and journalists mocked the monk. The mindset of many Indians have been brainwashed over the years that monk cannot be a ruler or a leader, his work is to just sit in temple and worship.

UP was facing several socio-economic issues like weak economy, lowest per capita income, worst law and order, corruption, exploitation of businesspersons, poor people by Don (Mafia), land grabbing, hafta vassoli, poor industrial development, farmers issues especially sugarcane farmers. Electricity, health and education were also in turmoil.

Yogi Adityanath, a monk who was aware of all the issues of the state owing to his groundwork for several years in the state initialized actions with every ministry/department with firm control and planning. He surrendered himself for the betterment of 22 crore plus people with no leaves and little rest, working round the clock.

He has been criticized unfairly by media and opposition leaders however he believes in work with his slogan “Reform, Perform, Transform” so without getting perturbed, he is working for the state to make it to the top on socio-economic aspects. Few actions/achievements by Yogi Government,

The state’s GSDP has gone up in the last four years from ₹10.9 lakh crore to ₹21.73 lakh crore, taking the state from the list of ‘Bimaru” states to second largest economy in the country.
• As per the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) report the unemployment rate in the state has fallen to 4.1 percent by February end this year against 17.5 percent in 2017.
• “Uttar Pradesh is ahead of other states in the country in enactment of forty four development schemes, this record of development has been accomplished when the world is fighting Corona crisis.
• It added that at least 21 new investment friendly schemes have been implemented in the state, including the establishment of Nivesh Mitra Portal, which has 227 facilities, resulting in Uttar Pradesh coming on the second position in Easy of Doing Business from the 14th spot in the country. UP has become the best place for investment in the country.
• It is thought provoking to see that for the last 73 years after independence; only 12 medical colleges existed in the state. Yogi government established seven new medical colleges and started MBBS courses in them in just three years. They also laid the foundation stone for eight new medical colleges. Along with this, they got the approval from the Modi government for the establishment of 13 new medical colleges. UP will soon get the services of 28 medical colleges. AIIMS are coming up in Gorakhpur and Rae Bareli as well.
It is the result of the enhancement of health services and the activities under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan that the number of encephalitis patients, an epidemic in children since the past four decades, has decreased by 56 per cent and the number of deaths has fallen by 90 per cent. Encephalitis was a big concern as thousands of children used to die every year, I would say, this is the biggest achievement of Yogi Government.
• According to the 64 page document released by state government, the state has been on the top in the country in several essential things including implementation of Pradhanmantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna, sugar and sugarcane production, construction of toilets (2.61 crore) for villages, plantation, establishment of MSMEs, providing government jobs and employment, establishment of women help desk at police stations, construction of expressways, construction of new medical colleges, Metro, Covid-19 tests and vaccination, free distribution of ration during Covid time and many more…
• Underdeveloped regions were given infrastructure development projects such as the Purvanchal Expressway (340.82 km), Bundelkhand Expressway (296.070 km) and Ganga Expressway (596.00 km). It is noteworthy that before 2017, only two cities in the state were connected to the air grid. Yogi government has added seven cities to the air grid in the past three years and is working on building 12 new airports.
• Modi government implemented MSP in 2018. Record purchase on MSP Rs 66000 crore has been transferred by DBT to farmers. UP stood second in sugar production in the country for the second time in a row. New units were added, leading to the expansion of capacity of the Munderwa, Pipraich and Ramala sugar mills. 1.27 lakh crore paid to sugarcane farmers in the past 4 years.
• Two-thirds of the state’s population has an agriculture-based income. The state government has implemented several schemes to achieve the goal of doubling farmers income by 2022. It is remarkable that fourteen new Krishi Vigyan Kendras have been established in the state. Six new science centres are planned. The minimum support price, which was an unbelievable dream during previous governments, has been implemented and farmers have been given benefits at the grassroots for pulses and oilseeds along with wheat and paddy. Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, Rs 12,000 have been sent directly to the accounts of farmers.
•Farmers’ loans worth Rs 36,000 crore have been waived.

•In Bundelkhand region, Yogi government have commenced a plethora of irrigation projects to benefit 50 lakh farmers by irrigation of 18 lakh hectares of additional land in this financial year. To highlight this point, Bansagar Irrigation Project, which was unresolved since decades was finished and dedicated to the farmers of the region. Projects like Arjun Sahayak, Bhavani and Bandai Dam projects and Saryu Canal, Madhya Ganga Canal, Uttar Pradesh Water Sector Restructuring etc. in the plains areas would further bring prosperity to the region. In Bundelkhand, more than 8,000 ponds have been built on private land under the ‘Khet Talab’ scheme. This year, 6,000 new local ponds will be built. The Aami River in Gorakhpur, the Odi River in Lalitpur, the Gomti River in Ayodhya and Ganda river in Pilibhit have been invigorated.

No riots in the state in past 4 years so the oppositions pretended anxiety of riots has gone for a toss.

The actions of Yogi Government on those who break law and order have set the new standard and are taken optimistically nationwide. Today the perception of the state has changed. The places that should have been “safe zones” were the “safari zones” of criminals. Yogi government tried hard to bring the law and order back on track. As a result, today either the criminals are absconding the state or in the jail.
• For better policing, 41 new police stations and 13 new check posts were established in the state and 1.37 lakh police personnel were recruited. The police station has undergone an infrastructural change, 59 police station, four women stations; 16-cybercrime station has been established in the state. Yogi government is working towards setting forensic labs in 18 ranges. Zero tolerance for crime. 66% drop in dacoit cases, 45% drop in RAPE cases, and 19% drop in murder cases. Exceptional emphasis is given on women’s security. The state government had adopted zero tolerance towards criminals and Mafiosi, and their illegally accumulated assets worth about ₹1,000 crore have been demolished or confiscated.
• 4 lakh youths got government jobs in a fair, transparent manner.
Yogi government tackled the corona crisis and created huge employment. Even World Health Organisation appreciated the TTT (Tracing, Testing and Treatment) formula resulted in less number of cases.
• As many as 45,383 teachers have been recruited and the recruitment of 69,000 teachers is in the last phase. Similarly, 55 new government inter colleges have also been approved in secondary education. This, the process to set up Atal Residential Schools have been not only expedited in every Circle Headquarters in order to spread the light of knowledge in the lives of children of labourers and deprived.

These are few achievements mentioned above, point is, such a hardworking, putting efforts to secure every individual in the state and development oriented CM, should be appreciated and supported to take UP to the new heights which will help our nation to grow with higher pace.

#VeerSavarkar could have well been called ‘Vidvaan Savarkar’

Veer & Savarka- they just go along with other so well that those uninitiated into the great man’s legacy would actually believe Savarkar’s name was Veer. Most of us have heard of his acts of valour and resilience, but not many would know about the “Vidvaan” Savarkar, a man of tremendous intellect, a literary giant who authored 38 books including his magnum opus ‘Mahakaavya Kamala’

It is with this book that I would like to begin my narration of the sheer genius within the man called Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Those were nightmarish days for Savarkar, lodged in solitary confinement at the dreaded Cellular Jail in the Andamans, tortured and brutalised, often vomiting blood, lying unconscious amidst vomit, urine and even faeces. Such extreme conditions would break down persons with even the most extraordinary grit and strength, but not the physically diminutive yet mentally colossal Savarkar. I can guarantee you will get goose bumps every time when you read what he did in such severely arduous conditions.

During this period of extreme adversity Savarkar would compose a couple of verses every other day and scribble them on the prison walls. He would then memorise them and erase them, compose more verses and repeat his act of scribbling, memorising and erasing. This went on for years and 13.5 years later, (yes you read that right, 13.5 years) when he was out of prison but under detention in Ratnagiri, he recollected all 6000 verses and put them together to give birth to ‘Mahakaavya Kamala’ – such was the monumental genius of this Maa Saraswati putra, Vidvaan Savarkar.

Veer Savarkar’s cell at the Cellular Jail in Port Blair

Savarkar was also credited for contributing several new words to the Marathi language, which we all use so regularly in our daily parlance. ‘Doordarshan (television), sampaadak(editor), digdarshak (director), kramaank (sequence/number) were some of the words coined by him.

Savarkar’s writings had a massive influence on our greatest freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev. His book ‘Hindu Pad Padshahi’ finds prominent mention in Bhagat Singh’s handwritten ‘jail note book’. Bhagat Singh also encouraged his peers to read ‘Life of Barrister Savarkar’ which Savarkar wrote under the pen name Chitra Gupta

Notes from Bhagat Singh’s jail notebook

‘The Essentials of Hindutva’ was Savarkar’s first English work. His definition of a Hindu or Hindutva (being a Hindu) from a cultural and nationalistic prism, rather than a religious one, clearly brings out the visionary inside this great thinker who was perhaps far ahead of his time.

I could go on and on about his genius but I would end with a gut wrenching, yet spellbinding story that will be a fitting conclusion to this little tribute to Savarkar.

It was early days when he was studying in England. His brothers, wife and sister-in-law were in India and he had just become a father before leaving for England. News of his brothers’ arrest first came in, and this was soon followed by the sad demise of his child. Shattered, he started walking aimlessly on the shores of Brighton pining for his motherland when the waves of the sea lashing at the rocks had him burst out into a poem that has me choking every time I listen to it. This incredible poem “Ne Majasi Ne” cries out his intense yearning to be united with his motherland when he prayed to the sea that connected him with India, to take him back home. This poem was later further immortalised by our very own nightingale Lata Didi Mangeshkar in her divine voice.

These were some of the numerous incidents that provide an insight into the sheer genius of arguably one of India’s tallest visionaries Veer Savarkar, or shall we now say Vidvaan Savarkar ?

Panipat III: A flawed narrative

0

Third battle of Panipat has for the last 70 years evoked a keen interest amongst the votaries of Maratha Confederacy, to call it an Empire would be a travesty. The Maratha Confederacy was the Ultimate Power in the 18 century goes without saying but never did the executive of the Maratha Confederacy ever dared call themselves an Empire. From Bajirao to Balaji Bajirao to the later ambiguous Peshwas were all more than happy to be Naibs of Mughal Empire and the Emperor, whosoever’s Stooge he maybe, it did not matter. As late as 1772 the Mughal Emperor bestowed upon Mahad Scindia the title of Vakil ul Mutaliq, the Regent of Mughal Empire and also bestowed upon the Peshwa sitting in Poona, the title of Naib of Mughal Empire. It was the utmost endeavour of the Peshwa and his Maratha Captains never to call themselves anything but as in service of Mughal Emperor. (ref; JN Sarkar, Fall Of Mughal Empire, vol 3, pg 293, 294)

Often we are told that Panipat III was a battle between the combined Muslim armies of the sub continent and the Hindu army of the Maratha Empire, an erroneous assertion made on even more erroneous assumption. The historical evidence does not show that the Fifth raid by Ahmed Shah Abdali, also called Durrani, the name he gave to his tribe actually means King Pearl of Pearls, was a Religious War nor was it premised on the destruction of Infidels, the Kaffirs based on the Quranic injunction of Ghazwa i Hind though it becomes a consequence of every Islamic invasion of the mainland Bharat and in this case it was an afterthought to lure the Believers into the conflict. This assumption is made on the evidence that Ahmed Shah was supported by all major Muslim powers in India at the time of his Fifth attack. But what is glaring is that Not One of the Hindu potentates in India was part of the Maratha campaign to North and especially in their endeavour to evict Abdali from mainland India. It is a point to ponder, why did not a single Hindu power aided the Marathas in this War of Hindus against Islamic Invaders ? ( ref ; JN Sarkar, Fall Of Mughal Empire, vol II, pg 255,256)

Preface to Panipat III was laid out in the consequence of Abdali’s repeated raids on Mughal Empire starting from 1748 where in the Battle of Manupur, he swept aside the Mughal Forces, in 1751 he attacked Meer Mannu the Mughal governor for default of payment of taxes. Lahore was besieged by Abdali, Lahore and Multan ceded to Abdali, Punjab was lost to Abdali in 1752 after a treaty was signed by Ahmed Shah Bahadur, the Mughal Emperor. In 1756 Abdali again invaded India on call by Mughalani Begum, widow of Meer, Afghans plundered cities of Lahore, Sirhind, Delhi and attacked the Hindu places of pilgrimage Vrindavan and Mathura. Thousands of Hindu women were taken as slaves.

Maratha Confederacy, the supreme power did not lift a finger in defence of Vrindavan and Mathura though were in near vicinity. However, Adina Beg the Mughal governor of Punjab alongside the Sikhs resisted the Abdali Forces and defeated and captured a troop of 10000 under his son Timur Shah. This alarmed Adina Beg who called the Marathas for assistance, Raghunath Rao led the Maratha expedition to Lahore, defeated the Durrani forces, paving way for Maratha dominance in Punjab. Interestingly, the Maratha expedition to Lahore had nothing to do with Maratha Confederacy, had no stake but went in assistance to Adina Beg for a payment of ₹75 lakh for the post of Subedar.

This led to Abdali’s Fifth Attack to retake his territories and led to the ill fated Third Battle of Panipat whose antecedents in lay Maratha greed for monies and not for the cause of Hindus, had that been the case, Marathas, the foremost power in India, could have at least tried to resist the attacks on Vrindavan and Mathura by Abdali. Jats under Surajmal’s the brave Jawahar Singh did oppose the Afghans and the spirited defence by Naga Sadhus, mostly from Rajputana & North India at Gokul forced Durrani army to retreat but Marathas lurking in close vicinity kept clear of the attacks on Hindu religious centres. While Abdali was attacking Vrindavan and Mathura, Peshwa was ordering Raghunath Rao & Scindia to extract dues promised but long overdue in Rajputana. Yet, Panipat III is called a Battle of Faiths by the proponents of 20th Century Hindavi Swaraj! (ref ; JN Sarkar, Fall Of Mughal Empire, vol II, pg 193 & pg 70, Chapter XIV)

Prelude to Panipat III is overwhelmingly a war for supremacy in the twilight of the fading Mughal Empire. The protagonists are arrayed in pursuit of power and wealth. Maratha Confederacy to substantiate its claim as the supreme authority in India while Durrani to reclaim his hegemony in the North West India with a puppet Mughal Emperor in Delhi. The dye was cast when Adina Beg called Raghunath Rao for his help, what followed was the natural consequences of a War of Supremacy. There is definitely a strong undercurrent of Islam in the campaigns by Durrani Chief but in 1760-61, it was just missing, power and supremacy reigned supreme. Abdali was preparing to attack and retake his former fief of Punjab at the same time Marathas were busy in extracting ransoms from Rajputana ignoring the threat looming large over the new acquisitions of Marathas in Punjab with Adina Beg.

Throughout the years of 1758-59 Holkar, Scindia & Raghunath Rao were in Rajputana. Interestingly, Malhar Holkar had publicly befriended Najib Khan as his adopted son while Datta Scindia was under order by Peshwa to crush Najib, circa 1759-60. Surprisingly, Datta too tried to befriend Najib after his return from Punjab to replace the administration at Delhi, keeping out Imad ul Mulk. The fact that the alliances were changing at blink of an eye should be evidence enough of the transitory nature of friends and foes in the build up to Panipat III. Marathas had aligned with Najib, Ahmed Bangash and Surajmal supported Datta Scindia in his siege of Delhi, to force Imad ul Mulk to ally with Marathas while Abdali had captured Punjab and thrown out Saba Scindia who fled with with heavy losses. He joined Datta in Delhi where Datta was killed at Burari Ghat battle with the Ruhelas supported by Afghans. Marathas fled to Kot Putli, near Jaipur and joined by Malhar as precursor to Panipat III.(ref; James Grant Duff, History of Marathas, vol 2.)

Maratha rout in North led to Sadashiv Bhau’s expedition to Delhi to restore lost dominions and more so the pride. After Raghunath Rao’s Punjab campaign at request of Adina Beg, Marathas had failed in realising any gains in territory or the tributes levied upon Rajputana. This march of Bhau was much anticipated and was meant to be succour for all the ills that plagued Marathas in North. Meanwhile, former adopted son of Malhar Holkar, Najib being pushed around by Datta had aligned with Abdali with disastrous consequences for Datta Scindia and the Marathas.

Bhau then sent his envoys to Shuja ud Daula, Nawab of Awadh to get his support, Shuja was invited by Abdali to be part of his forces, with the Nawab undecided, Bhau moved north with show of strength to force Shuja to join the Marathas. This failed as Najib was more persuasive and promised his head if Abdali in anyway tried to cut Shuja in the campaign. Bhau wasn’t done yet, he moved towards Delhi capturing it on 22 July 1760. His capture of Delhi was an empty vessel, the moribund Emperor and the Empire was all in name. ( ref; JN Sarkar, Fall Of Mughal Empire, vol II, pg 271,72, chapter XX)

Bhau was soon stretched thin in resources, his condition was pitiful. Shuja sent his envoy Raja Devidas to bring about a peace between Peshwa and Abdali through offices of Bhau and Najib. The conditions laid down by Shuja were not conducive to the Jat Raja Surajmal who left the Marathas. Shuja to be recognised as imperial Vazir while Jawan Bakht as Wali Ahad or heir to Mughal Empire. These angered not just Surajmal but it left Imad who was part of Maratha alliance, high and dry. He too left with the Jat Raja. Bhau was now without a single friend north of Narmada. The tyranny of locusts swarms of South was bearing fruit at a time when Abdali was staring down the Marathas and Shuja weighing his options, he finally went with Abdali at behest of Najib. Rajputs whose internecine Wars led to Maratha depredations were sitting on the fence waiting for the outcome of the conflict between the two. They did not come to support of Marathas, nor did any other Hindu power in the North. Marathas were reaping their harvest of Tyranny and Chauth in the precursor to Panipat III. (ref; JN Sarkar, Fall Of Mughal Empire, vol II, pg 255-56, Chapter XX)

When every Hindu potentate abandoned the so called Champions of Hindus and Hindavi Swaraj, the Muslim battalions of Ibrahim Gardi, the famed Gardi Musketeers trained on French lines threw in his lot with Marathas. The result of the battle is well known in history but the prelude to the Panipat III is generally shrouded in mystery as a well thought out machination. Imad, the Mughal Vazir was supporting Marathas, who in a bid to catch two in the bush in form of Shuja lost one in hand, ie., Imad. Surajmal too was betrayed by Marathas, the only Hindu ally they had in a bid to appease Shuja, Nawab of Awadh. In the end they only had themselves to blame for being the rapacious plunderers that they were. Marathas had antagonised each and everyone India and left cursing everyone for their rapacity which robbed them of any friends. The claim of Panipat III being a Battle of Faiths is a flawed narrative by Maratha Revisionists which does not stand scrutiny of historical evidence.

Self empowerment or self objectification

While writing this article I have an apprehension that most of the readers would consider me as a misanthrope but we need to discuss and open our insight towards the changing trend in terms of women empowerment and self enhancement. It is obvious both men and women can be objectified. Self-objectification occurs when individuals treat themselves as objects to be viewed and evaluated based upon appearance. Materialism can trigger self-objectification tendencies. Self-objectification is a consequence of a set of values that implicitly considers body appearance as an essential element for personal success, self-worth, and social acceptance. Self-enhancement is getting linked to high self-objectification. Individuals (they can be both men or women) who attribute priority to self-enhancement are expected to be more involved in self-objectification processes.

Rising Trend

Women are sexualized and represented as objects used to sell products and as evident women are depicted in this way with significantly more frequency than male  are, such representation is being put forth for the sake of “fashion.” And it is here that we really encounter problems. There are countless examples within the past years, alone, of fashion demeaning women in the name of commerce. The use of camera shots of women’s body parts in different brands of beer, deodorants, bedsheets and many commercials in which there is no use of feminism.

It is found that women appeared less in commercials than men, but their bodily exposure was greater. In addition, there is likelihood that a commercial had at least one camera shot focused on a woman’s chest. There were also no male curves highlighted, but female curves are specially highlighted. Another important finding is that the majority of women appeared in either swimwear or leisure wear, whereas the men often appeared in work clothes. Commercials like these are direct instances of self objectification that women may be subjected voluntarily or involuntarily to any time they turn on their television.

Women in glamour industry have begun thinking about and treating themselves as objects to be regarded and evaluated based upon appearance and they have no repent on it. They  boldly accept to get objectified. Those in position to procure themselves from social vices are in far better situation but women who are financially dependent or struggling in carrier succumb to pangs of objectification. Celebrities need to be responsible. Young generation consider actors as role model and follow these actors in a blindfolded manner.

Definitely we have to be proud of our body gifted by nature but claiming that we have beautiful body why not reveal it does not make the sense. The outfits which are wore by women celebrities in award functions etc. become aspiration of many young girls from small town to wore by them one day and they go to any extent to achieve it. In addition to commercials, other forms of media such as movies and music videos  communicate to women that if they engage in substance use they will be hot, sexy, and both admired and desired by men. This is not an art and not even fashion. It is sexual objectification and it is highly damaging to ethics both individually and socially.

When women are objectified they are treated as mere bodies, instruments for the use and pleasure of others, they are deprived of their personal identity and considered as mindless entities, unable to experience human mental states. Definitely as written above, both men and women can be objectified, but in practice women are the most common victims and in today’s perspective they have become the volunteers of sexual objectification. This is obvious in cases of high profile prostitution, nudity in cinema and pornography. Exercise of sexuality within these morally problematic sexual contexts leads to the reduction of women (prostitutes and concubines) to men’s objects of appetite.

Pornography defines women’s role as sexual objects available for men’s consumption: Since times immemorial prostitution and pornography defines women by how they look according to and  how they can be sexually used? Pornography participates in its audience’s eroticism through creating an accessible sexual object, the possession and consumption of which is male sexuality, as socially constructed; to be consumed and possessed as which, is female sexuality, as socially constructed.  Pornography is responsible for both men’s and women’s conception of women as objects available for men’s consumption.

Women’s consent in sexual objectification has become a true consent in most of the cases. Materialism and self autonomy is going a wrong way. Money has become the medium of force and provides the cover of consent. The feminists who tend to believe that sexual objectification is a consequence of gender inequality and it is created and sustained by pornography’s existence and consumption is now becoming a myth. Nudity is in abundance today which explicitly  teaches that, not only is it permissible to treat women as an object, but also that women themselves enjoy being used violated and abused by men. Thanks to OTT platforms today giving platform to explicit content without censoring it.

The exposure and bold content is now becoming the trend of showcasing the talent. You are likely to be considered as good actors if you unhesitantly  portray a bold scene. Things which are meant to be done within four walls of the rooms is being portrayed on camera in wake of portraying realistic cinema. The portrayal of younger females with shorter dress and exposed body parts than man in same situation needs to be critically discussed in terms of sexual objectification. These are clearly associated with physical appearance rather than other attributes. Women begun their focus on physical appearance than on competency.

The thought that we must treat others as instruments, for we need their skills, their company, and their bodies—in fact, there is little that we social creatures can do on our own, is becoming prevalent and trendy. In order to represent women in a broader scope of powerful and professional roles as a global phenomenon advertising has arguably distorted the imagery of female bodies to attract the pleasure of the male gaze. Their sexualized body use is widely relayed in advertisements, media and culture. In name of self-determination and empowerment, women are choosing to be sexy, adopting the normative codes of sexiness, and are working hard to maintain their sexy appearance within social norms. Ambiguous sexual expression, including sexual gestures, sexual poses, and sexual facial expressions are  increasing over the time in movies and music videos. Furthermore, female music artists are more often portrayed as sexually objectified than male artists. Male artists are far less shown to objectify other individuals compared with female artists.

Conclusion.

A set of criteria for what counts as sexual objectification is hard to define but there is a thin line between the sexual objectification and sexual empowerment. What I feel, empowerment is having ownership of our body. It’s not about dressing a certain way because you think that it would make you more sexually desired or more attractive. Empowerment is about being responsible for you own self-image, being comfortable with what you put out there in a way that celebrates who you are, not a way that tries to get others to look at you simply as an object of desire. When use the word empowerment, think about the word power. Being empowered means that you have the power. If you dress a certain way that makes you comfortable and embraces who you are, then that could be an example of being empowered.

So if you’re looking at someone and wondering whether they are being seen as objects or whether they are being empowered, ask yourself, who has the power? If they are simply being displayed and looked at for their bodies, or if they are purposefully doing things in order to be looked at for their bodies then that might be sexual objectification. If they have the power and are embracing themselves and their bodies without needing people to admire them sexually, then they are probably empowered. Women high in conservative values adhere to cultural standards of appearance.

Self-transcendence values does not have to do with self-objectification. Women motivated in pursuing their own ideals, abilities, and interests, i.e., open to change, seem to challenge the odds and prevent themselves from self objectifying cultural environment. Women who attribute priority to openness to change are diplomatic to external expectations. For me, women and nature share a powerful moral connection. The work women are imposed to do by nature creates sensitivity and empathy among. And what I perceive is that self objectification creeping into conscience of the ladies is slowly creeping in killing the natural instinct of feminism.

The topic raise relevant questions in light of the larger conversation about sexual harassment and assault in fashion and film industry and beyond. If there has to be a certain sense of change in the way society treats women, even film industry needs to change its mentality and embrace subjects about womanhood and feminity without projecting women as a mere object of sexual gratification but as a person of her own with layers. In this phenomenon, the women herself has to play a greater role. NO means no in every term.

Collapse of Indian health care system: Ripples in South Asia

0

“I took my mother to Kolkata in 2017 for an eye operation, every year since then we have been going to Kolkata for her treatment. My concern is that if she needs medical assistance now, it would be difficult to go. Also I am worried when I see the situation in India”, says Tanbir Arman form Dhaka. He is among the several thousands who come to India in search for better medical facilities. Around 3.4% of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTA) in India were for medical purpose in the year 2013 as per the Bureau of Immigration.1 10.4% of the FTA from South Asia were for Medical treatment, with Maldives and Afghanistan accounting for the most. Since 2014 when the Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home Affairs discontinued the disembarkation card, data regarding purpose of visit is not available. Now the Ministry of tourism publishes Visa Type data, which shows that number of Medical Visa issued, have increased from 2.4% in 2014 to 6.4% 2019.2

India is becoming a hub for medical treatment; particularly for global south due to the cost advantage it poses as compared to other countries and its expanding corporate style health infrastructure. As per the Medical Tourism Association in 2019 India was one of the cheapest countries in terms of health service in the particularly in South and South East India. A Hear Bypass in India costs 7900 USD whereas; the cost was as high as to 26000 USD in South Korea.3 For South Asian India becomes a preferred destination due to the availability of quality health service at low price coupled with the fact that language and culture does not act as an impediment. Dental Tourism alone accounts for 10% of the total Medical visits in India,4  as the cost of the dental Implant in India was around 900 USD in 2019 compared to 1720 USD in Thailand, 1500 USD in Malaysai and 2500 USD in Singapore.

Covid-19 and South Asia

On January 2, 2020 when the Government of Nepal launched the ‘Visit Nepal Year 2020’ with a target of attracting two million tourist in 2020, little did it know that it would be the first country to have a Covid-19 Positive case in South Asia. The first case in Nepal was reported on January 3, 2020, when a native student, who had returned from Wuhan, developed symptoms. The Ministry of Health and Population, Government of Nepal, took immediate notice of the matter, establishing checkpoints, 24×7 helpdesks, isolation beds and augmenting the health infrastructure. On March 31, 2020 when Nepal, officially ended it ‘Visit Nepal Year 2020’ it was under a nationwide lockdown and the total positive cases were rising exponentially. Similar measure were seen in Neighbouring countries, Pakistan closed all its borders, banned international flights and shut down educational institutional, falling short of a complete lockdown.

In Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani, prohibited large public gathering and closed down public spaces that attracted crows. The City of Kabul was under partial lockdown from March 27, 2020 with only grocery stores and Banks allowed to be open, public transportation was restricted with limits put on passengers, but as the number of cases rose, on April 12, 2020 lockdown measure were made stricter with penal charges for violation of the lockdown. Bangladesh Imposed Lockdown from April 5, 2020 for a week and Bhutan & Maldives banned international travel and closed down educational institutions. Sri Lanka followed same measure, banning international travel and imposing complete lockdown in some cities like Colombo while partial lockdown in other.

India was the South Asian Country which faced the worse of its crisis in all aspects The country reported the highest number of positive cases and as of May 23, 2021 it accounted for ninety one per cent of the total Covid cases reported in south Asia. It imposed one of the harshest lockdown in the sub-continent for 71 days, which was followed by series of unlock measure.

Collapse and the Ripple Effect

“I had to take my father for a Hip Surgery to Chennai. His surgery was due in June 2020, but due to the pandemic, I could not go. My best hope was late 2020 or early 2021, but with the crisis in India. I really don’t know what to do. I am exploring alternative options, but that might be expensive”, says Dola from Dhaka, who was scheduled to come to India for her father surgery, but its almost a year that she had to delay the visit. A similar story was narrated by Shariyar Ahmed who used to regularly visit India for cancer treatment, but could not come due to the pandemic. Though Situation is at control in Bangladesh, the prevailing conditions in India give not respite to south Asian who looked upon India for quality and affordable health services.

The words of Dr Jalil Parkar, Mumbai based Pulmonologist that “that is worse than world war two” 5 is enough to highlight the state of affairs in India. The very fact that people are gasping for air, and struggling to get a bed with oxygen, brings a question, is India prepared to be regional health hub. Mandira From Kathmandu says “this crisis in India particularly with the second wave has made me realised that I have to look for healthcare alternative. Earlier, my late father used to go India for his heart related ailment, but I am not concerned about my mother and in-laws”. The daily images of India with people struggling to get beds, oxygen and medicine highlights the fact that the collapsing health infrastructure in not adequate enough for its own people, how will it be able to absorb the people from the sub-continents.

Health Expenditure in India for the Fiscal year 2018-19 was 1.28% of the GDP, which was lower than that of Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan which were spending 9.4%, 5.8%, 3.06% of there GDP respectively for the same year.6

Source: World Health Organisation Global Health Expenditure Database

As of 2019, India had one doctor per 1445, falling below the World Health Organisation norms of one doctor per 1000 person. Though WHO has not prescribed any global norms for the density of hospital beds per population7 data from world bank shows that there were 0.5 beds per 1000 population for the year 2017 in India. This was lower than Sri Lanka 4.2 (2017), Bhutan 1.7 (2012), Bangladesh 0.8 (2016) and Pakistan 0.6 (2017).

Conclusion

South Asia is already facing challenges with communicable and non-communicable diseases, and without adequate doctors and health professional it is relying mainly on general practitioners, who lack professional medical competence. The growth of Private hospitals in India and investment in central Institution like All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has added space in India, and this coupled with the growth in the generic drugs industry has made specialised health care affordable and accessible for South Asian. This however, poses another challenge for India, as the demand of its health services is limited to its border.

Is Twitter another East India Company?

0

Twitter’s defiance to Indian laws and referring to Freedom of speech, intruding into Indian affairs reminds East India Company in 1700’s who came to India for Spice trade and slowly expanded their dominance in cotton and silk and even amassed its own army stationed in Bombay, Madras and Bengal. As their dominance grew in Indian Subcontinent, they slowly conquered each princely State and established full administrative powers on Indian territories and even imposed right to tax on people.

India after 72 years after independence from British is going through a similar situation from social media companies like Twitter dominating Indian politics and overtaking the decisions of democratically elected leaders and even judicial entities on what to do and what not to do citing Freedom of Speech. While, Twitter is purely business entity which has a its user base rose to 108% in 2019 and made a profit of 5.8 crore Indian rupees in 2019-2020. There is a need to regulate the unregulated internet content in the modern world.

Recently, Indian Government have notified new digital ethics code in February 2021 with regulations on social media firms to curb the misinformation, distorted information, hate, bigotry, social disturbances, child abuses, sexual abuses etc. that threaten the sovereignty and integrity of India. The notification asked social media firms to comply with new ethics code to appoint grievance officers who should be available 24/7 with their details available on the portal and cooperate with law enforcement agencies. The Ethics code also asked social media firms to acknowledge the grievances within 24 hours of complaint and must resolve it within 15 days. The Social media firms also have to publish the compliance report every month as per the new ethics code. As business entities, these social media firms must follow the rule of land otherwise, these firms will lose the intermediary status which they enjoyed for years and will be liable for a criminal action. While, Facebook, Google & YouTube agreed to comply and sought some time to iron out some aspects with the government but Twitter defied the new regulations as direct attack on Free Speech.

However, Twitter’s defiance to comply with India’s new digital ethics code citing Freedom of Speech and Expression on Internet was rebuked by Indian Government. “In a press statement released by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology strongly controverts the claims made by Twitter and said India has glorious tradition of Free Speech and democratic practices dating back centuries. Protecting Free Speech in India is not a prerogative of only Private entity for-Profit foreign entity like Twitter but it is the commitment of world’s largest democracy and its robust institutions.”

The above statement is just part of a three-page rebuttal that had chided Twitter and its policies of dual nature. While assuring the safety of Twitter employees, it pointed out that regulations are needed to curb the misinformation and distorted news will have a dire effect on people that would lead to breaking of law and order. Government referred to Article 19(2) of India Constitution that clearly points out that Freedom of Speech is not Absolute and has reasonable restrictions. The rule of Land requires the business entity to follow regulations that are framed in India to safe guard the fundamental rights of its citizens and there is no Iota for business entities to dictate terms on India’s legal policy.

While, Twitter claims it committed to people of India; Ironically the commitment it made was invisible on multiple times. Government in its response to Twitter cited the duplicity and shared some examples of their blatant non commitment to Indian people.

  1. Twitter chose to show the geo location of Ladakh a union territory of India as a territory of People’s republic of China. It took days to remove the tweet and after multiple reminders from India.
  1. While Twitter chose to take Suo moto action on users who it believed the perpetrators of Capitol Hill violence in US but refused to take action on twitter handles aftermath the violence happened at Red Fort India even after prompt request made by Government of India to block the contents that incites the violence on pretext of fake genocide plan.
  1. Citing another instance, when certain twitter handles promoting rampant Vaccine Hesitancy campaign in India earlier this year, Twitter chose not to take any action on the vaccine hesitancy.
  1. Highlighting Twitter’s discriminatory and racist behavior practiced on Indians and People of Indian Origin due to malicious tagging of B.1.617 double mutant with a name “Indian Variant” despite WHO’s strict guidelines against geo tagging. While, on a contrary, Twitter took immediate action against naming “Singapore variant”. This raises a serious concern if the Indian people are less important than Singapore or US?

In another development, Twitter’s decision labeling India’s BJP spokesperson Dr. S.Patra’s tweet as manipulated media drew severe criticism from Delhi police who pointed out that if Twitter found an evidence of manipulated media; then it has to provide the evidence to Law enforcement authorities and cannot take the Law enforcement role in pre judging the tweet while the case is under investigation with a pending court’s trial and added Twitter is neither an investigator nor a judge but pretends to be both. As the digital ethics code came into effect on May 26th, Information and Broadcasting Ministry has given 15-day period to digital media publishers and Online streaming platforms to provide details of compliance.

My life, my choice, my India

Modern Medical fraternity treats me as a Consumer. As a consumer it is my choice whether I use Homeopathy or Allopathy or Ayurveda. IMA puts its logo certifying so many products latest is a wall paint as bacteria free. So many doctors and hospitals have cheated patients in this crisis and at other times as well. I have never seen IMA doing anything on any of such instances. IMA is a gang of doctors which are largely responsible for failing moral standards of medical fraternity of India. In their greed, they continue to run down all other medical science.

By going after Baba Ramdev, IMA is running away from competition that he puts up and many times has beaten IMA in their own game of commercialization of world’s most nobel profession. IMA has never stood for protecting consumer rights viz is people like us. Many doctors are without scruples and have mislead country so many times including selling fluoride based toothpastes. Never ever , IMA has highlighted the side effects of products it endorses. IMA has lot of questions to answer than ask.

The fraud on I the India begins from Indian medical schools. Our system for training doctors is plagued by inadequate infrastructure, rampant fraud and unprofessional teaching practices, exacerbating the public health challenge the country faces. Indian medical entrance has been rigged multiple times and bribes in name of donations is a common practice. In short, next gen doctors are taught to cheat and deceive even before they enter their classrooms. IMA has never taken the correct steps to highlight and ensure necessary steps are taken to create a strong medical system for 1.4 billion population. Post course completion, most doctors are not keen to join public health system at remote areas and villages. Many others who do join report to duty only on paper. Doctors have the privilege of working at government institution as well as running private practice. It is an open secret where their loyalties lie when they do so. Further there are so many of them who work privately as well as in big hospitals with fake degrees and may be are members of the IMA as well. Such doctors can be termed as just better than quakes.

All these happens under the nose of their body IMA. An FIR against IMA officials will spell the beans out and shall help the consumers who should be the only concern of Indian Health Minister. Importantly it will set correct course for establishing medical infrastructure in India. Our health system is in crisis, the sufferer is the patient.

I am India – neither IMA nor Ramdev represents me. As my government , you should think about me and neither IMA nor Baba Ramdev. Baba Ramdev has only raised uncomfortable questions in an uncomfortable way which ideally IMA should use as a basis to self reflect and ask many other relevant questions to itself as a body of doctors.

Baba Ramdev has reignited interest in age old natural treatment philosophy of the country. He is a global ambassador of Yoga and has immensely contributed to spreading the awareness about inner well being. Notably many doctors practice Yoga daily but shy away from recommending it to their patients.

By going after Baba Ramdev , you are denying me right to choose my medication. You cannot do it IMA – It is my life, my choice, my country !!!
