A piece of advise to BJP for UP 2022 – Let your work speak for itself

वो छोटी छोटी दरारों को कुरेदते रहेंगे

Could not desist from sharing the above lines, penned by me in anguish at the persistent attempts of the combined opposition and the entrenched privileged class across the system (bureaucracy, judiciary, fake farmers, middlemen and the likes) to douse the rising fire of a yearning for a better India among common citizens, by poking at our society’s differences to blur the bigger picture. As a so called fascist, unsecular BJP governments at Centre and in different states, talk of “sabka saath, sabka vikaas, sabka vishwaas”, the paragons of democracy and secularism across the ecosystem are talking only about divisions of caste, religion, region, It would have been comical, had the consequences for our country not been tragic. Artificial attempts to fan the divisions have manifested itself in CAA protests followed by Delhi riots and Farmers protests leading to the shameful Red Fort fracas.

Recently, no stones were left unturned by the opposition-pidi media combine to give a communal and caste/community twist to the recent unfortunate Pilibhit road rage incident, involving the son of a Union Minister from UP. Prompt action was taken by the UP govt in investigating through a SIT and arresting the minister’s son. But opposition is loathe to let go of the incident, betraying political opposition at the cost of social unity. It is clear that the opposition and the entrenched ecosystem, in their intense desire to see the back of Modi, have no skin left in the game. If the country  burns, if development agenda is hijacked, for them it seems to be a small price to pay. But is it really such a small price or does it have deeper ramifications for current and future generations of India, should be the question common citizens should ask themselves. The good part is that people have started asking these questions.

As the most populous state of India, Uttar Pradesh, enters the build up phase of 2022 assembly elections, the ecosystem is throwing the whole kitchen and sink once again to inorganically divide the society on caste, religion and regional lines. BJP with a solid performance score card on the work front, should trust the common sense of the common man and keep highlighting its work. “Kaam bolta hai” slogan was never more relevant as it is now in UP, under the able stewardship of a “karmyogi” Yogi Ji. And I am not speaking as a fawning bhakt. A quick perusal of the development data in UP is in order.

Infrastructure and connectivity – Let us start with infrastructure and connectivity. Yogi government has built more than 15,000 km of rural roads, much more than its predecessor govts. It has also worked to lessen the urban rural divide by connecting the main roads with the villages via link roads. 1557 revenue villages which had no road connectivity with main roads for seventy odd years after independence, have been connected. Yogi also understood the importance of good roads and expressways in bringing opportunities and prosperity, pretty early in his tenure. A spate of greenfield expressways were undertaken on war footing, early into his term. The 341 km showpiece “Purvanchal Expressway” was recently inaugurated by the PM. Bundelkhand expressway is soon to be inaugurated. Gorakhpur link expressway is progressing ahead of the curve and work on the ambitious Ganga expressway, running across the breadth of the huge state, is underway. The value of these projects in the underdeveloped Purvanchal, parched Bundelkhand, central and western UP is huge and will not go unnoticed by the electorate. When Yogi took over, only 1.5 airports were functional.

Today five international airports in Varanasi, Lucknow, Kushinagar, Noida and Ayodhya are either functional or under construction. The Noida airport (Jewar) would be the largest in India and probably among the largest in the world. The tendering, award and land acquisition has progressed briskly without usual controversies and complaints expected in such large projects in UP of previous era. Work on ground has started and first flight is expected to take off in 2023. Only 12 medical colleges were set up in UP till 2016. Yogi govt has opened or working to open, another 30 medical colleges in UP. Recently PM Modi inaugurated 9 medical colleges in UP in one go, a first in India. In fact the long term plan is to have a medical college in every district of UP. For a former BIMARU state, it will be a huge plus in fighting rural and urban health issues among the masses. A spate of schemes at rural level to connect rural ladies thru SHGs (self help groups) like Bank Didi, “Pustahaar didi” etc is working wonders in enabling the rural womenfolk and connecting them to mainstream economy. Such schemes are not new, indeed they can be found aplenty in most states, but Yogi’s transparent and brisk implementation is the plus that he brings to the table.

Covid Management – UP being the most populous state of India and saddled with a crumbling medical infra, was tipped to explode under the Covid onslaught during successive waves. The attitude of non BJP state govts did not help. Just to make things look bad for Modi govt, they actively encouraged labour force migration back to UP in droves, during the peak spread phase of the contagion. Buses, full of migrant laborer from UP and Bihar, were dumped at UP’s borders by selfish neighboring state govts. A lesser CM would have crumbled under the onslaught. But not Yogi. He pulled up his sleeves and took the challenge head on. From segregating, testing, isolating and transporting laborer to their native place to active follow up for ensuring strict quarantine in villages, to transparently distributing free ration to the poor, he ticked almost all the check boxes on pro-active Covid management front. UP became the state conducting most number of daily tests, it became the state famous for pro active distribution of Ivermectin as a successful preventive measure for doctors and front line workers.

Even Australian MPs were in awe of the state’s pro active Ivermectin strategy. Among all this heat, the CM himself got infected. But that did not stop him from working tirelessly online. And once recovered, he was back on his feet, actively touring all districts of the state for gauging covid management steps. In between, challenges like Oxygen crisis came. But the electorate being wise as they are, knew it was a once in century disaster. They were willing to forgive errors as long as they were convinced that those in power put their head down and worked tirelessly to their maximum capacity. In Modi and Yogi, they saw those sincere efforts. And that is all that mattered to them. In between the usual suspects, the cunning opposition and the conniving media, did try to spin stories about dead bodies in the Ganges. But touched by the man’s sincerity in the face of an unprecedented crisis, the people of UP did not pay heed to such motivated stories. Once second wave ebbed and a semblance of control returned, Yogi govt quickly grabbed the opportunity to vaccinate people. UP soon emerged as the most vaxxed state in India. The way UP govt and Centre turned the Covid crisis into an opportunity, has poured cold waters on opposition hopes of maligning them. Active covid management will surely pay rich dividends for the Yogi govt in 2022.

Law and order – Last but not the least, I come to the most understated, yet the most profound achievement of the Yogi govt. For a state synonymous with crime, politico-mafia nexus, state inaction against crime etc, the turnaround by Yogi govt has been immense. Pro active measures like preventive arrests, encounters, invoking of NSA, bulldozing of ill gotten properties of criminals and mafia, zero political consideration in crime control, has taken the winds out of most criminal’s sails. And the effect on common mans’ lives, their “bahu beti ki izzat” and ability to move around freely, is widely appreciated by common people, who had faced the worst in previous SP govt. Its reminds me of Bihar, where the electorate even after almost two decades, is unwilling to forgive Lalu Yadav family for the jungle Raj that they forced on the people of Bihar. The MSM ,largely wanting to see the backs of Modi/Yogi, will not report this, but crime control and law and order improvement is probably THE MOST IMPORTANT achievement of Yogi govt and is surely going to fetch rich electoral dividends for them.

In conclusion, it can be said that the cunning opposition and the conniving MSM, will continue to play their usual games like “Hathras ki dalit beti” and “Plibhit ka Kisan beta”. Invoking my lines once again-

My advise to Yogi govt is that they should not worry about such motivated news pieces and continue to bat on the front foot with their work as the center piece for canvassing. In my humble opinion, in cricketing parlance, Yogi govt has scored enough runs in its first innings to win by at least an innings if not more.

Good governance week: Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s aspirations in endurance with Shri Narendra Modi’s Executions

0

This year (2021) we are celebrated 97th birthday of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji who was a great poet, orator, philosopher, politician and who lived upon to his principles till his last breath. He was elected to the Lok Sabha 10 times and to Rajya Sabha for 2 times and was awarded India’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna. He initially joined RSS when he was a child later joined Bharatiya Jana Sangh and at the time of emergency in 1975-77 he fought against the atrocities of the then congress government. Post emergency Bhartiya Jan sangh along with Janata Party established the government, later due to indifferences within, the members of Bhartiya Jan Sangh, left Janata Party and formed Bhartiya Janata Party in 1980.

BJP contested elections independently in 1984 and won two seats initially and from then there is no looking back year after year it grew under the leadership of Vajpayee ji and Shri. L.K Advani ji and in the 2019 general elections, it rose as the largest party elected with 303 seats. Since 2014, every year his birthday (25th December) is celebrated as good governance day due to his sincere and effective rule he performed during his tenure. This year good governance week was celebrated from Dec 20 to 25. During this week ‘Prashasan gaon ke aur’ was scheduled. As part of these collectors and officials from 700 districts across the country went to the villages to find out their grievances and solved the problems then and there itself.

Similarly, a workshop ‘mission Karmayogi- the path ahead’ was conducted with an imperative need to transfer from ‘rule’ to ‘role’ to perform good governance. The executive branch (executive/bureaucracy) is one of the 4 pillars of democracy and the National Programme for Civil Services Capacity Building (NPCSCB) aims in capacity building of the executive members. The project is aimed at enhancing the skills, performance and ethics of government employees to keep pace with the changing times. There are currently 46 lakh employees in the Central Government. Government is spending Rs 510 crore over the next 5 years to increase accountability and transparency along with making government schemes to reach more effectively to the people with check on negligence and corruption. Prime minister Modi Ji believes in the concept of “reform, perform and transform”.

Here we would discuss how Vajpayee ji’s ideas, aspirations and intentions are  been carried forward by Shri. Narendra  Modi ji. Vajpayee ji believed in the three principles for good governance. They are strategic foresight, transparency and accountability of government, and antodaya i.e when we  are able to incorporate and deliver welfare and development schemes to the last person in a queue then its considered to be good governance.

  1. Strategic foresight: Shri Vajpayee ji believed in the importance of developing infrastructure to increase employment and future development. The National highway development project, the golden quadrilateral roadways and Pradhan mantri Grameen sadak yojana changed the course of roadways in the history. Today under the leader ship of PM Modiji connectivity to villages is improved and under Bharatmala, Sagarmala and setu bharatam (removal of railway crossings in national highways) a new era in roadways is seen. Also PM Gati Shakti- national master plan aims to improve multilevel connectivity with 16 ministries including railways and roadways put together for development of integrated, coordinated connectivity projects. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan: It is a scheme that has made free and compulsory education a fundamental right for all 6- 14 year  old children. Today, it has been transformed into samagra shiksha abhiyan a comprehensive training campaign in 2018-19 under the National Education Policy. Interlinking of rivers was  Vajpayee’s idea which is been put forward and  now various projects  are in various stages of implementation. India was made nuclear power by performing nuclear tests at Pokhran under his leadership. After the tests India was subjected to international sanctions, but due to its strong economy  and rising GDP even after sanctions 4.8% in 1997-98( pre-sanctions) to 6.6% (post sanctions) in 1998-99, U.S decided to drop all sanctions. India still remained the only country with nuclear weapons which has signed Nuclear suppliers group but remained out of Non-Proliferation treaty. Vajpayee ji had peacefully taken up the process of forming new states Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand in year 2000 by prior discussions and meetings with people of both states unlike Congress government which haphazardly bifurcated the state of Andhra Pradesh which led to lot of agitations in both the states. Vajpayee ji planned ‘stategic sales’ where disinvestment was carried on debt ridden public sector undertakings. Shri. Vajpayee laid government had disinvested 12 PSUs during his tenure which was carried forward further by Modi government where a National infrastructure pipeline- national monetisation plan was set on.  Modi ji strongly believes that “Government has no business to be in business” and works on an aim to “monetize to modernize”.
  2. Increasing transparency and accountability: Shri. Vajpayee government brought the Freedom of Information Act in 2002, later on changed to right to Information Act, which defined transparency and accountability of the government to the common man. Presently under the leadership of Modi ji Aadhar-Voter I card link act was passed to increase transparency during elections and avoid electoral malpractices. Vajpayee ji is a staunch believer that nothing should come free of cost except training, education and health care to the people. PM Modiji brought the skill India Mission in 2015, Looking at the state governments taking loans without a focus in decreasing fiscal deficits, he brought Fiscal Responsibility, budget management (FRMB) act to enhance financial discipline in public spending policy from taxpayers money. To increase transparency and timely implementation of government programmes Modi Ji brought PRAGATI (Pro-active governance and timely Implementation) a multipurpose programme where even common man’s grievances are heard upon. Also Modi ji government brought IB code, 2016 (Insolvency Bankruptcy Act) to act on insolvency issues.
  3. Antyodaya:  A good governance is said only when the most suppressed in the society gets the fruitful benefits of government schemes. Equal opportunities and equal laws to all. Vajpayee ji had initiated Antyodaya Anna yojana scheme in the year 2000 where nearly 1 crore poorest families where given ration at a cost Rs. 3/kg rice and Rs. 2/kg wheat. During the pandemic, under PM Garib Kalyan Yojana, where economy is struck upon, Modi government had provided free ration to 81.35 crore beneficiaries covered under NFSA (Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority households) from April 2020 till March 2022, with an estimated budget of Rs. 2.60 lakh crore. In this way, Vajpayee ji’s ideology was taken forward by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and he believes “Janata Janardhan” which means the people are god. PM Narendra Modiji’s era can be considered as an era of “digital revolution” and coming decade to be considered as “TECHADE” (Technology decade).
  4. Present government believes in “Minimum government and Maximum governance”. Broadband internet connection was extended to 1.5 lakh gram panchayats and 3 lakh Common Service Centres have been set up nationwide. India has been the world leader in transactions through UPI since the abolition of banknotes. In October 2021 alone, 350 crore transactions worth Rs 6.3 lakh crore underwent through this medium. Present government has emphasis on direct Cash Transfer (DBT) where schemes or benefits are directly transferred to the people with no middle men in between. Today Ujwala, Jan Dan Account, Janani Suraksha yojana, Matru Vandana Yojana, PM kisan samman nidhi, PM fasal bhima yojana, etc are been done by DBT.  Transactions have been made easier through JAM trinity integration (Jan dhan, Aadhar, Mobile). For common man to get health benefits PM Ayushman bharat Jan Arogya yojana was started and 2.5 crore treated by admissions till 20 december 2021 and  8.4 lakh covid cases were treated. Previously transport by airways was to be a dream for a common man , but with UDAN (Ude desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme 403  operational of proposed 948 routes, number of airports increased from 74 (2014) to 138 (2021) and further planned to increase to 220 to 250 in the next 4 to 5 years air travel has become feasible for common man. Post Office Passport Seva Kendra  are brought at 424 post offices enabling easier process to get passport services. Unification of all services is been done
    1. One nation one ration card
    1. One nation one grid in electricity
    1. One nation one marketà e-NAM
    1. One rank one pension in army
    1. One age for marriage Raising the age of marriage for female
    1. Women into permanent commission
    1. One nation ,one law, one symbol àRepeal of Article 370

The governments motive is “Sabke saath sabka Vikas sabka vishwas sabka prayas” . This year we are celebrating azadi ka amruth mahotsav 75th Independence Year and by year 2047 when we will be celebrating 100 years of Independce our target is to make Bharat “Vishwa guru”.

Bet Dwarka islands are being claimed by waqf board board

0

Bet Dwarka islands are being claimed by waqf board! Gujarat Highcourt is disappointed to hear the application. The judge said to the applicant: do you even know what the hell are you talking about?

Bet Dwarka is located in the Dwarka district, and it’s an important pilgrimage place of Hindus and also part of Dwarka, the adobe of Shree Krishna. Also, The place have several temples and pilgrimage sites for the Vaishnava sect for ages.

Recently in the last few years, the area of Dwarka, especially bet Dwarka is facing demographic changes. As per the sources, I have talked, there are around 8000 Muslims per 10000 populations.

This fact came as surprise to many when the Sunni Muslim WAQF board committee claimed a few islands of Dwarka as their property.

A Google Map Image of Bet Dwarka Islands

In the hearing of Justice Sangeeta Visen, The WAQF board submitted that two islands of bet Dwarka should be owned by them. After hearing this claim of ownership the court got disappointed at the vagueness and absurdity of the claim. The court commented that does the applicant even know what he is saying? Dwarka is Krishna-Nagari and how can WAQF board can claim ownership.

It should be noted that the WAQF board has claimed ownership of 8 different islands of bet Dwarka.

The court has asked the applicant to revise the application with some substance in it and asked to re-submit it in vacation court.

Newsreport of hearing in Divya Bhaskar Gujarat.

We have asked for some comments from the MP of parliament Ms. Poonam Ben Madam for some comments on Twitter which is yet unanswered.

Remembering some of the iconic work by Akhilesh Yadav during his days

0

I recently heard Akhilesh Yadav complaining that Modi and Yogi are busy with inauguration and laying foundation stone ceremonies as election in UP are approaching; interestingly, he does not stop here. He adds on that, they are inaugurating facilities for which his government did a lot of work. He said the same for Purvanchal Express, he is saying the same for the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor.

That’s so convenient for BJP reaping the benefits of someone else’s hard work. Poor Akhilesh Yadav, he and his government worked so hard on all these projects that people of UP royally destroyed his party in both, the Lok Sabha election where you could literally count the number of seats the party won on your hand i.e. 5 and in Assembly elections where they one 47 out of 403 with vote share almost half of what BJP got.

So, why did people do so much injustice to him and his party? Even when his party gifted free laptops to certain students in 2012 with his and Mulayam Singh Yadav’s picture on the laptop bag and a catchy caption “purey hote vaadey” along with the father son picture as a screensaver once the laptop started.

Why people why?

I mean the party ordered a whooping 15 lakh laptops, its another thing that only 6 lakh of them reached the students. Only god or probably he knows what happened to the rest 8 lakh laptops. Maybe rats took them home, like they drank all the confiscated liquor in Bihar once. I don’t know! Rats are clever these days. Some of the laptops that were probably spared by the rats, were damaged in the rain. Of course it was the fault of the officers as per the all hard wroking Mr. Akhilesh Yadav. His words: “Our job is to formulate the policy and it is the job of the officers to ensure that it’s distributed” Quite convenient! Isn’t that? What can the government do if there is corruption? In short the laptops didn’t reach the students and last I could find, the debt of around Rupees 900 crore that Akhilesh’s smart, promising government owed to HP that supplied the Laptops was also not payed.

That’s not all about laptops. Akhilesh Yadav is smart. He did something extraordinary with his laptop scheme. His scheme was to provide 15 Lakh Laptops to students every year. Focus on every year! I meant at least before the elections. However, Mr. Akhilesh Yadav ran this scheme only for one year. After one year, he claimedOur objective was to make people realize how much this technology was needed and we were successful in creating this awareness“. Thank god, Akhilesh Yadav told the people of UP the importance of Laptops during an election year in 2012. People of UP used to think that laptops and tablets are just some fancy table tops. Thank you Akhilesh Ji for enlightening us.

Maybe in 2016 when demonetization happened, he and his party was not left with enough money to tell the people of UP the importance of liquor or e-rickshaws. Evil Demonetization!

This was the latest stunt he had pulled. He would launch a new scheme with all the fanfare but (there is an important ‘but’ here, don’t forget it), but after scrapping an old one. Unemployment allowance scheme, Kanya Vidyadaan Scheme, e-books and e-Library scheme; they were launched with all the fanfare and mumbo jumbo but soon, sooner then expected they were scrapped; and scrapped with pin drop silence. No body figured out what happened. Same amount of budget allocation every year but for a different scheme. Classic Ponzi scheme; the “Topi” #kaamboltahai.

Whatever one may say, Akhilesh Bhaiya has a big heart. I am not kidding! He literally gifted a constituency seat to his beloved wife, Dimple Yadav in 2012. Remember, I not talking about the nomination, I am talking about the electoral victory. Bhabhi Ji won Kannuaj constituency unopposed and became the sixth member of the Yadav family to hold an elective post. Unopposed theoretically means, if she would have casted her own vote for herself, she would have won as there was no competition. Bhaiya Ji‘s magic! Just a thought! what did you gift your wife this birthday or anniversary? You need to learn from him! #kaamboltahai.

This was the time when the country was suffering from “Dhritrashtra Syndrome“, don’t look at me, I did not make this up, I just googled it now. I don’t know who was being referred to as Dhritrashtra or Duryodhan, but I definitely for sure know who Draupadi was at that time; the women of UP. A report by Union Home Ministry confirmed women most unsafe during Akhilesh’s rule. There was a 61% increase in crime against women in 2014-15 compared to 2010-11. There were 50% more rapes in UP as soon as Akhilesh Yadav came to power as compared from the year before. #kaamboltahai

Those were the days when boys made mistakes(Ladke, ladke hain. Galti ho jati hai).

Its not only the women that were unsafe, crime in general increased several fold. Remember Akhlaq Khan? I would be really surprised if your answer is in a negative. You remember him only because this case happened in 2015, you would not know any such names from 2012-2014, at the time when there were over three dozen communal riots in his first two years. I explicitly say first two years, because once BJP come to power at the center in 2014, for some intellectual reasoning the onus of any and all the communal riots anywhere in the country by default goes to BJP. I don’t know why. So, I am specifically talking about the time when there was no BJP anywhere, neither at the center nor in the state. I am not at all talking about the more than 200 communal riots that took place during Akhilesh Yadav’s complete tenure. I will also not talk about Muzaffarnagar riots and the Saifai festivities; every body knows about them. #kaamboltahai

Moreover, what are we complaining about Rapes, Loot, Murders, Extortion, Robbery etc. etc. when the government literally goes ahead and tries to withdraw cases against terrorists like Waliullah and Shameem who were accused of Varanasi serial blast that took lives of 25 people. The audacity of Akhilesh Yadav was not that he tried to withdraw the cases after he won the election, the audacity was that he put it in the election manifesto. In its election manifesto of 2012 the party promised to review charges against terror suspects to prevent the harassments of innocents. Innocents!! Thanks to the Court that slammed Akhilesh Yadav’s government for trying to encourage terrorism in order to appease its loyal vote bank. #kaamboltahai

I guess people of UP did not like this and then in 2017 and 2019 #kaambolgaya. By means of this blog I am just trying to pay a small tribute to Akhilesh Bhaiya‘s tenure as chief minister of UP.

Coming back to the inauguration ceremonies, It is not that Akhilesh Yadav did not do anything constructive, he did. Some notable mentions: He built a Rupees 51 crore Haj House in Ghaziabad, He built a Rs 200 Crore swimming pool in Saifai Village for which he was so dedicated that he suspended an IAS officer Mr. Singh for delays in the sanctions. By the way, a non-MY officer is more than likely to get fired for any reason; one time Bhaiya ji and Bhabhi Ji were stuck in an elevator for 30 minutes, result? three officers fired!! 30 minutes!! Who says government processes are slow?

Akhilesh Yadav inaugurated an incomplete Agra-Lucknow Expressway, riddled with corruption and controversies. Moreover, Akhilesh Yadav also inaugurated Yamuna Expressway which was actually built by the previous government lead by Mayawati. You might have noticed, I didn’t put the references in this paragraph for the claims regarding expressways, as a matter of fact, I am writing a complete article on the Expressways in UP and would be posted soon, where you would have the opportunity to verify the veracity of the claims by cross referencing with the links that I will be providing. By the way, on the left of Mr. Yadav in the picture, Mr Azam Khan is currently languishing in Sitapur Jail pertaining to cases of money laundering and amassing property using unaccounted money.

Thank you for reading this article. If you liked the content, please do share it in your circle and let me know your views via the comments. Also, don’t forget to follow the blog so that you receive the notification once I publish my next post which would be about the expressways in UP. Thanks!!

Why Harish Rawat led Congress is facing trouble in U’khand

0

The recent tweet of Uttarakhand political stalwart Harish Rawat led to a controversy which frankly wasn’t new in Indian National Congress. For those who don’t understand Uttrakhand congress politics, let me explain some tidbits for you and why I think Congress High Command is set to lose another good face due to its trivial policy of divide and rule.

Right now if we talk about leader of masses or more appropriately a Jan-neta, in the Himayalan state then undoubtedly it’s Harish Rawat and no one else comes close to his stature and political brain. For example the recent  numbers of people in Rahul Gandhi rally which was organised at Dehradun Parade Ground, rivaled Prime Minister’s recent rally in the same Arena which doesn’t happens everyday. According to political analysts, this was a masterpiece of Harish Rawat and his brethren.

Talking about brethren, there are two opposing factions in Uttarakhand Congress– namely, the Harish Rawat faction and Preetam Singh faction. Now, the Harish Rawat faction alleges that State Election Coordinator Devendra Yadav highly favors the rival faction.

Political analysts think this is a move by Congress High Command to to keep Harish Rawat in check.

The writer of this article has an ideology which slightly favors the right but unbiasedly I feel, Congress led by Harish Rawat can win in the state but the tradtional congress style politics will help BJP and Dhami to begin another term or maybe welcome a new leader!

Rise of legal age of marriage for women – The need and implications

0

“Life ends before they have wings to fly” for considerable number of females

Globally women still do not have equal opportunities and representation in various fields. In India a lot of reforms were made for women. Still, there is discrimination and under representation of women in various fields.

The age of marriage

NFHS (National Family Health Survey) data revealed that incidence of child marriages has reduced steadily over decades. The child marriage rate was 47% in 1998, 44.5% in 2002, 27% in 2015-16 to 23% in 2019-20. 7% get married before 15 years with the incidence being more in rural areas at 27% compared to 14.7% in urban areas. 56% of women (61% in urban & 47% in rural) get married between 18- and 21-years. Majority of women in India married after 21. The mean age of marriage is 22.1 years in India and in most of states it is more than 21.

The Hindu Marriage Act -1955, The Special Marriage Act-1954 and The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act,2006 recommend minimum consent for marriage as 18 years for women and 21 years for men. The same applies to Christians under Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872 & Special Marriage Act. In Islam, marriage of a minor who attained puberty is considered valid.

Modifications of Age of marriage in India

1.Child Marriage Restraint Act or Sharada Act ,1929- Fixed 14 years for females & 18 for males

2.1949 act amendment – Fixed 15 for females & 18 for males

3.1978 act Amendment – Fixed 18 for females & 21 for males

4.Prohibition of Child Marriage Act was brought in 2006 with which

-Law was made applicable to all Indians except J&K

-Option of Voiding marriages

-Punishment up to 2 years.

Impact on females

Some issues which can be associated with age of marriage of females are as below

  • -The gap between representation of females and men widens as the level of education increases. The ratio of females to males is lesser in higher education, central institutes, professional courses, white collar jobs and higher positions.
  • -Higher fertility rates, low fertility control, poor fertility outcomes, early child births, rapid rebirths, still births and abortions were associated with early marriages.
  • -A very significant proportion of women have nutritional problems and health issues.More than half of reproductive age (15 to 49 years) women are anaemic.
  • -Average life expectancy of Indian women was higher by 2.7 years compared to males, but difference in Healthy Life expectancy was only 0.1 years. Worldwide average life expectancy was 5 years and Healthy Life Expectancy was 2.4 years higher for females compared to males.
  • -Attacks on women and domestic violence.
  • -Economic stability of women.

Modi government determined to reduce the child marriages significantly. Accordingly, committee was set up by Ministry of Women and Child Development to study about the age of marriage of women and prevalence of Infant Mortality Rate, Maternal Mortality Rate, Anaemia and Nutritional problems in children, Anaemia in women, Nutritional problems in women, Nutritional problems in children, Gynecological problems in women, health issues in women, women empowerment, education and social indices. The committee headed by Jaya Jaitley, Former Samatha Party President, included NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr. Paul ,secretaries of several ministries, doctors, educational experts, industrialists and women organizations. Committee did extensive research involving young adults and women across country with equal representation from all religions, urban and rural areas. 16 universities took feedback from young adults. Women and young adults in remote areas and marginalized communities were reached with the assistance of over 15 NGOs.

Recommendations of Committee

-Age of marriage to be increased to 21 years.

-A woman must be at least 21 years old at the time of first pregnancy.

-Providing better transport facilities in far-flung areas to improve access for young adults to schools and colleges.

-Training courses in skill development and entrepreneurship for women.

-Sex education in schools.

-Campaigns to increase social awareness about all the new measures.

-The delay in marriages will have positive financial, social and health implications on families, society and children.

Union Cabinet on December 15th decided to increase the legal age for women from 18 to 21 years on par with men.

Advantages of preventing early marriages

-Reduction of Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR – 145 mothers / 1 lakh children born) & Infant Mortality Rate (30/ 1000 children born die before one year).

-Girls below 20 years are twice likely to die during child birth than those aged between 21-24 years. Girls below 15 years are 5 times more likely to have MMR

-Infants born to mothers less than 19 are 60% more likely to die than infants born to mothers after 19.

-Domestic violence was more with early marriages. Mental maturity of females increases as age advances. Women after 21 can face challenges easily and are less susceptible for domestic violence.

-Will boost women work force participation levels from current 18%. Increasing women participation by just 10% will result in $770 billion increase in GDP and create millions of jobs. Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) LFPR in India has been fallen from 30.28 % in 1990 to 18.6% in 2019, particularly more in rural areas. LFPR of India very low compared to global 47%.

-Increase in enrollment of females in higher education and professional courses.

-Women now hold 49% share in total enrollment in higher education in 2019, an increase by 18% from 31% in 2015. In National Institutes women enrollment is only 25%. In engineering and technology enrollment is as low as 29.2%. In fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) share of women is very low.

I measure the progress of a community with the degree of progress women have achieved” -Dr. B. R. Ambedkar

Article 15 of Indian constitution guarantees equality to all citizens irrespective of gender, religion, caste or place of origin. Rising Legal Age of Marriage to 21 on par with males is a major step towards equal treatment of males & females. This will ensure equal opportunities for women in fields of education, jobs and business. Women will have chance for representation in higher education and highly qualified jobs. This will definitely improve health status of women and children. This decision of Narendra Modi government is a welcome step for overall welfare & progress of women. The legislation is one of the strong measures to bring women on equal footing with men as guaranteed by constitution.

Religious freedom & no intolerance and Islamophobia in India?

0

What can be a greater TRUTH than most people of diverse religions in India saying that they have religious freedom? This truth comes from a recent report by the Pew Research Center (PRC), an established institution, which conducted a survey on the ground of nearly 30,000 Indians of all faiths from different parts of the country. Let me quote, “The vast majority of Indians say they are very free today to practice their religion (91%), and all of India’s major religious groups share this sentiment: Roughly nine-in-ten Buddhists (93%), Hindus (91%), Muslims (89%) and Christians (89%) say they are very free to practice their religion, as do 85% of Jains and 82% of Sikhs.”

How much better can it get with 89% of Muslims admitting religious freedom in India? Yet, the lawmakers in the United States ignored the published facts vis a vis India and voted to approve the House Bill, H.R.5665 – Combating International Islamophobia Act which includes India to be monitored for Islamophobia. This bill if approved by the Senate will add another office for a “watchman diplomat” in the State Department to monitor Islamophobic activities in the rest of the world except the Islamic countries and the United States. According to the Bill, this office will monitor and combat acts of Islamophobia and Islamophobic incitement in foreign countries.

One must ask why the U.S. has to muddle in other countries affairs but if it has the propensity to monitor religious intolerance and discrimination leading to Islamophobia elsewhere why not first do it at home. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, the champion of the bill, should know that a survey of American Muslims in the U.S shows:

  • 69 % personally experienced one or more incidents of anti-Muslim bigotry or discrimination and 83% said that they know a Muslim who has personally experienced the same.
  • 79% said that they witnessed or experienced increased anti-Muslim bigotry after the 9/11.

Should not Omar be engaged in monitoring Islamophobia at home before worrying about foreign countries? India for one does not deserve, desire, and appreciate any interference. In addition, the gross misrepresentation of facts by Omar, the so-called progressive Democrat from the State of Minnesota is unacceptable. I live in the same State where Hindu-phobia exists, partly because of her anti-India activism and yet Hindus at large are not united as usual. They are now advocating for the defeat of the Bill in the Senate hoping that. our advocacy will turn the tide against the bill.

What is even more reprehensible that Congresswoman Omar had the propensity to say on the House floor that, “ Prime Minister Modi’s government has moved to strip the citizenship of millions of Muslims.” Nothing can be further from the truth because, to the best of my knowledge, not even one Muslim born in India has lost or stands to lose the citizenship, let alone the “millions.” How can the order of magnitude difference between one and one million be explained except calling it a STRAK JIHASDISM OF FACTS?

Responding to the characterization of Omar as a Suicide Bomber by a colleague in the House, Omar tweeted, “Anti-Muslim bigotry has no place in Congress.” Similarly, I want Omar to know that grossly misrepresented anti-India statement has no place in Congress either. If anything, Omar must be held accountable and asked where she got her facts about “millions of Muslims,” being stripped of citizenship.

Ms. Omar has made many incendiary remarks which were anti-sematic in nature for which she later apologized. She loses her cool when she passionately defends Palestinian or the larger Muslim cause. Granted that she is a Muslim but that does not give her the license to create a hostile environment- Muslims versus the rest of the world’s religions. As a Muslim, she often plays a “victim” card which is undeserving of a policy maker. The Islamophobia bill is nothing more than creating a bigoted world based on religion and political rhetoric and putting Islam on a higher pedestal than others. If anything, the U.S. should engage in harmonizing religion-based conflicts globally including the Shia versus Sunni among Muslims.

A group of Americans called Understanding The Threat categorically states, “The bill was submitted and advocated for by jihadi Congresswomen Ilhan Omar (D-MN) who works directly with the designated Foreign Terrorist Organization Hamas doing business as CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations), as well as many other prominent U.S. Muslim Brotherhood organizations on an ongoing basis to overthrow the U.S. government.” Such emotions are unprecedented yet the Democrats did not care and voted for the bill along party lines. Even as a Democratic leaning individual, I disapprove the poor wisdom in the House but hope that greater wisdom will prevail in the Senate.

The CAIR is applauding the passage of Islamophobia Bill in the House and already at work to keep the momentum in the Senate. The Hindus, on the other hand, have moved and are moving with an incredibly slow motion? CAIR represents the highest order of unity as one voice of Muslims from anywhere but Hindus have too many voices with little or no unity. The diversity must be celebrated but we need to learn from CAIR to stand with “one Voice” when it is a matter of our heritage under attack for the sake of our future generations.

Let us briefly talk about the 11% Muslims in India who seem not to agree about “religious freedom.” I surmise, these are the “radical” type which also exist among Hindus. Perhaps, the radical types on both sides incite community conflicts, divisiveness, fear, and intolerance leading to phobia and hostilities. Some Hindus with justification think that if India was sadly partitioned based on religious grounds with Pakistan as an Islamic Republic, why India cannot/should not be a Hindu nation. Why should India have different set of practices and rules for Muslims? Many ongoing differential practices have created disharmony and occasionally communal violence in certain parts of India. Let us hope India brings a Uniform Civil Code for all people under one constitution.

One more set of data from PRC is people experiencing discrimination on a personal level in the last 12 months. Those saying yes include Muslims (21%), Hindus (17%), Sikhs (18%), Christians (10%), and Buddha and Jains (13% each). In other words, there was no widespread discrimination across India except for regional variations. With all the PRC evidence suggesting religious freedom and no widespread discrimination in India, why did Congresswoman Omar dare to include India for monitoring the non-existent Islamophobia and make such a blatantly false statement about India? It just shows her hatred for India and Hindus.

We cannot deny that every country and culture has historical conflicts among people of different races, regions, religions, and political ideologies. But that does not justify imposing an evil ideology in the form of legislation like monitoring Islamophobia which will only divide and not unify the world. Every nation including the U.S. and India deserves better. Together, let us create a better world with no religious phobias and stop people like Ilhan Omar from imposing her self-serving ideology and self-induced fear about Islamophobia because it exists in her own backyard.

Social media and celebrity worship

0

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” These are the words of Steve Jobs, CEO and Co-founder of Apple Inc. This quote is relevant for all of us, one the one hand, we appreciate the fact that all of us are extraordinary, with our calibres and flaws that make us who we are. But on the other hand, we sometimes fail to recognise our identities, we project it onto to someone else. It is as if, we are existent for someone else,a person who is not known to us personally defines who we are, not our talents or in the case of some, the fact that they themselves are gifted.

All of us have been beguiled and attracted by celebrities and public figures at some point in our lives, as teenagers or young adults. We have been a part of fandoms, have followed all updates about our favourite celebrities. From what are their likes and dislikes to their live locations sometimes. All of this has been credited to social media, be it,Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. Almost every public figure has a social media account. We are made to believe that it is necessary for us to know what a film star is indulging in,  from time to time. An observation that may be attributed to social media fandoms is that people to are unable to communicate and understand dissents, instead of a civil debate as to why a celebrity is liked by one and disliked by the other, use of abusive language and personal attack occurs. Fights within fandoms are also prevalent. In the real world, we must be ready to face disagreements, with our colleagues or class mates in case of school going teenagers. The energy lost in unnecessary Twitter fights can be channelised to work hard and someday be as successful as the entities that have become a part of our lives. A dangerous dimension of toxic fandom and obsession has been portrayed in the film, Fan (2016) starring Shah Rukh Khan as the film star, Aryan Khanna and an obsessed fan, Gaurav who follows the star and indulges in revenge and all attempts to destroy his as well as the actor’s life for the sake for his obsession.

I hereby quote Gabriel Symonds on Quora, a doctor and counsellor “Projections onto celebrities to the point where they become obsessions are a symptom of emptiness of much of modern life, seeking validation from external sources such as the number of likes they attract on social media.” External validation is sought by us, even in real life, so seeking the same on Twitter or Instagram is also valid. According to Wikipedia.org, Parasocial interaction (PSI) is a psychological term described by Richard Wohl and Donald Horton in 1956 wherein the audience considers media personalities as friends, despite having no or limited interaction with them, it is an illusionary experience. Repeated exposure to media persona causes the media user to develop a false or illusionary intimacy or identification. This exposure makes us believe that what is said in the media is the gospel truth. Any contradiction to that is necessarily a fallacy. Gabriel Symonds goes on to say, “It’s then understandable that some may become abusive if their projections are threatened by others claiming to be the true believers.”

Celebrity Worship Syndrome(CWS), as defined by Psychology Today is, an obsessive-addictive disorder where an individual becomes overly involved or interested (completely obsessed) with the details and personal life of a celebrity. A person who is in the public eye can be the object of obsession such as television or film actors, pop music artists, authors, politicians or journalists. It can be Simple-obsessional, as in, stalking a celebrity (79% of cases according to Wikipedia), Entertainment-social, which means admiration for a celebrity for the ability to garner the attention of the viewers/listeners, Intense-personal, that is, to perceive the celebrity as physically attractive and see a soul mate in him/her and Borderline-pathological, the willingness to commit crime for the obsession towards a celebrity.  According to research, Intense-personal level of CWS has been linked to depression, anxiety and stress.

One must realise, that at the end, all of us are here to make a mark, to be successful in our respective interests and fields. We can certainly admire people and role models for what they do for the society or even if they entertain us, we may also support them at times, on social media. But all of this, at the cost of saturating our identities with theirs is certainly not worth it. The media too must make sure, that they inform the people about  real life heroes, rather than just talking about where a public figure went, airport looks or photo shoots. India, is a country of diverse traditions, people from different parts of India strive to make a change, to create history. It is the very India, where prayers are done for the recovery of Amitabh Bachchan from COVID-19, where Rajnikanth fans wait outside the hospital to get a glimpse of him and know about his health. The concern and emotional connection is heart warming for these celebrities who have worked hard to establish themselves. At the same time, we too have a vast array of opportunities in our lives to be the torch bearers of transformation and capture the love and appreciation of the people of the nation and the globe.
