The meaning of the word Trimbak (Tri Ni Ambak) is Lord Shiva’s three eyes and his three eyes are known as the sun, moon, and fire. And it is also believed that Trimbak means “Trinities” or “Trimurti” which represent Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.

There is another story told in Lingpurana about the word Trimbak. Linga Purana says Triambak is the father of light Sun, Moon, and Fire

Trimbakeshwar is the name of the island of Gautam Ashram area called Jambudvipa of Bharat Dvipa of India, Where the Dandak forest is located. But its old name is Trisandhya. And the name Trimbakeshwar has derived from the father’s name three lights Sun, Moon, and Fire.

The Mythological Story of Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga :

The story of Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling is very exciting. Two elements govern all the world (Universe) 1) The Shiva element and 2) The Shakti element we called it sky and earth. These two-element are run the whole world. One day an argument started between the Shiv element and Shakti element “I am the bigger”. And to show their power Shiva elements and Shakti elements started to increase their size. In this fight, the entire universe began to cover. Fear started coming into everyone’s mind.

The power of the Shakti element started to decrease, and Lord Vishnu merged with the Shakti element and continued the Shakti element’s expansion. By seeing this Lord Vishnu communicated with Lord Shiva from within and divide Shiva’s elements into 12 parts with his Sudarshan Chakra and set these 12 parts on the earth which is called 12 Jyotirlinga. That twelve parts are known by the name 12 Aditya. This 12 Aditya started regulation of twelve months. Every month Sun brings different light which is called Dwadashadityam such that there are 12 Jyotirlingas, one of them is Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is called Adya Jyotirlinga.

Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga at the foothill of mountain Bramhagiri. From Bramhagiri hill holy Godavari river originates. According to mythological stories, Lord Brahmadeva does penance on mountain Brahmagiri to please Lord Shiva, since that, this hill is known as Brahmagiri Parvat.

On Brahmagiri Parvat there was an ashram of Gautam Rishi. Gautam Rishi performed a penance on this hill to please Lord Shiva to remove his sin of killing a cow. Lord Shiva was pleased and asked Gautam Rishi what he wants. Gautam Rishi wants to take bath in Ganga Manta’s water to remove his sin of killing a cow. Lord Shiva accepted Gautam Rishi’s wish and sent Ganga mata’s water to Brahmagiri Parvat, but the Ganga river disappeared from there again and again.

Because Ganga manta does not want to leave alone there. Ganga manta says Lord Shiva to stay with her at Trimbakeshwar. And Lord Shiva accepted the Ganga manta request and originate on the land of Trimbak in the form of Jyotirlinga, which is known as Sri Kshetra Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga Mandir.

In the Padyapurana says on Sahyadri Parvat there is one Jyotirlinga, whose darshan destroys all the sin. Trimbakeshwar is the place where Lord Brahma ji penance for a long time for the creation of the world. Among all 12 Jyotirling, Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is the only which represents three Lords, Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.

This 100-year-old has a very big area with various small Shiva Lingas. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga temple was built with black stone built by Shri Nanasaheb Peshwar. Kushwart Kund is located near the Trimbakeshwar Mandir where the holy Godavari river emerged after disappearing from Brahmagiri Parvat.
