Bharat – An idea whose time has come

0

The congress is absolutely correct when it says that the “Idea of India” is in danger. And that another term for the BJP and Modi will mean the end of India as we know it.

To decipher these fears, we have to consider two angles – (1) the nature of power and (2) Maslow’s hierarchy.

The Nature of Power

In politics, as in everything else, power is everything. This is true of even the most mundane things.

A simple illustration: A man with a perceived higher social standing will naturally attract more mates, friends and opportunities. And can also more easily get away with things than a person who is further down the hierarchy. This is because at some level people desire to be influential/famous (thus the rise of Facebook etc.), and to feel that they are special. However, most people aren’t and the only way that they can be special is by riding the coattails of the influential and the famous. Fame by association is the name of the game.

People will latch on to and claim any person, ideology, religion etc. that validates them and their feelings of self-worth among their peer group or superiors.

And conversely if something invalidates an individual or a group, they would become its bitterest enemies and fight for its total annihilation.

This perfectly explains the story of India’s elites, thus far.

These individuals came of age when India and Hinduism were severely crippled and reeling from multiple invasions. It was no longer vital and dynamic and had long ago ceased being a power center. The west, represented by Anglo philosophy, culture, systems and language were pre-eminent.

Is it any wonder then that the Indian elites gravitated towards those systems? After all, who would wish to identify with a supposedly dead and weak religion and an impoverished nation?  Remember: if something invalidates an individual or a group, they would become its bitterest enemies and fight for its total annihilation. And so it was with elites who formed the left and the Congress, not to mention, the ecosystem that eventually coalesced around them.

Reams have been written about the anti-Hindu laws and legislation passed by these elites as well as the pseudo-secularism that they indulged in, so we won’t rehash that in this article. Our concern will only be with the current state of India, and what the future possibly holds.

Now, going back to the beginning, the Congress is very right in saying that the “idea of India” is in danger. Its “idea of India”.

The Congress represents the successor state to the British Raj. It was run, managed and furthered by individuals who were brought up to see the world, and themselves, through western lens. They ran the country exactly as the British had done, using the same policies and systems. This was done to the detriment of the non-elite citizens – who formed the majority.

Under this clique, English was patronized and given a position of prominence, this enabled the elite to perpetuate their hegemony over the masses.

It is this “India” that is in danger. All the power, control, influence, money et al that the elites and their puppeteers had amassed is now in danger of slipping away for good. This is the real reason behind the Congress’ and the “ecosystem’s” hysterical onslaught against the BJP. All other moral slogans are just empty noise intended for the gullible. It’s highly unlikely that the “minorities” would be in any greater danger under the BJP, for example.

The Congress is well aware of the nature of power and knows that once it has been out of power long enough, it’ll cease to retain or attract individuals. There will be an exodus to the new power source, as is already evident. Such is human nature.

Now, regardless of the BJP coming back for a second term, we need to realize that the pendulum has probably swung the other way for good. This brings us to the second part and the other force that is operating on the Indian public and altering India as we know it:

Maslow’s Hierarchy

The American psychologist Maslow’s contention was that every individual has a hierarchy of needs, and once his needs at a certain level are met, he moves on to a higher level and so on, till he self-actualizes – becoming the best version of himself and is comfortable with self and others. Maslow represented this hierarchy in the shape of a pyramid with the lower level needs like safety, food, water etc. at the bottom and self-actualization at the very top.

We can explain India using this theory. At the bottom of the pyramid, an individual is stuck in a loop of just tending to his very basic needs – food, shelter etc. (the famous roti, kapda aur makaan), he doesn’t have the time or the inclination to aspire for higher things like philosophy, ideology, history or identity.

This was the situation that the average non-elite Indian found himself in, since independence. He was largely dependent on government largesse. The government itself functioned in a zamindari manner. And laws and regulations were put in place to keep the individual perpetually beholden to the government and to crush entrepreneurship and prosperity. This is the MO of most third-world dictatorships who deliberately keep the populace involved with lower-order needs so that they never self-actualize and become threats to the system.

This is why whenever and wherever the Congress has been in power, economic development is the last thing one can expect.

The Congress eventually had to go in for economic liberalisation in 1991 due to its shoddy mismanagement over the preceding decades. And that planted the seeds that would eventually bring BJP to power – for when an individual no longer has to worry about basic needs, he starts thinking about his roots, identity and his place in the world.

This is also why the BJP under Modi has been excessively focused on Vikas.

This has slowly been happening since liberalisation, and will be accelerated with an additional term. More and more individuals are going above the bottom layer of the pyramid and reaching the top, and when they do, they see a resurgent India and Hinduism – not the eyesore that the older elites saw. Remember: People will latch on to and claim any person, ideology, religion etc. that validates them and their feelings of self-worth among their peer group or superiors.

The core of India was always Hindu, but it lacked the material and intellectual power for reasons that are too lengthy to dwell on at the current time. Now, with the topmost layer in sync with the core, the time is ripe for resurgence.

At all stages, the polity of a country is indicative of the state of the country itself – Congress represented the confused, battered and rootless India. This was true of both the elites and masses.

As SR Goel put it, “In this perspective, Pandit Nehru no more remains the progenitor of Nehruism, on the contrary, he becomes one of its more prominent products” .

BJP represents a more developed and evolved Bharat in touch with itself.

This is just a reset of India’s operating system.

The Future

There is now a top-down as well as a bottom-up force working on re-defining the “idea of India”.

So, barring any unforeseen circumstance, the pendulum has swung irrevocably to the other side. Even in the unlikely scenario that the BJP doesn’t come back to power, and an anomaly like 2004 repeats itself, some other nationalist, Hindu party would – down the line. The future of India is Bharat, whether that would be achieved politically or through other means is anybody’s guess. The genie has been let out of the bottle.

We can conclude that the Congress represented the India of yore. BJP and any other future political party would represent the Bharat of today.

In the future, BJP itself might morph into a centrist party that leans left (a la the Congress of today), and more reactionary parties will take its place as the nation moves towards the top of the pyramid and reclaims its true identity as a country that is perhaps similar to Japan – Modern, but not a cheap western copycat.

The current elites would either be forced out or bend the knee to the new emperor (highly unlikely, as Modi so far hasn’t shown any such inclination). Their progeny would definitely be in the nationalist camp. We can already see the great switching of sides with the number of artistes openly coming out in favour of the BJP. This wouldn’t have even been in the realm of possibility a few years back. The “first family” is also a public target of jibes, something inconceivable earlier.

We can also see the beginnings of a new ecosystem around the new power source.

And as for the minorities, they would negotiate their own terms with the BJP as they did with the Congress. We will definitely see an exodus of minorities to BJP, as it occupies Congress’s space.

All said and done, these are interesting times and we are lucky to witness them. As lucky as those in the past who lived through the ending of one age and the starting of another – think the end of the Mauryan empire and the beginning of the Shunga empire. Or the end of Maratha rule and the start of British control over India.

Of course, change doesn’t happen overnight. It doesn’t play out like the portrayals in books where a chapter ends with the collapse of one ruler and the next chapter starts with the crowning of his successor.

Change is slow, imperceptible and creeping. But a constant.

Organic nature of the vision of an artist

0

I first saw a replica of Sobha Singh’s iconic painting ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ at the age of ten at my uncle’s house. Every time I visited his house, I sat smitten by the painting’s beauty and the ethereal quality of the work always appealed to my mind. It has been years since I have been lured by its passionate depiction of the lovers: Sohni and Mahiwal. It is my favourite painting. It is also the most reproduced picture in India. Sohni Mahiwal is one of the four pillars of tragic romances from Punjab, others being Sassi Punnu, Mirza Sahiba and Heer Ranjha. As the folktale goes, unhappily married Sohni swam every night across the river using an earthenware pot to keep afloat in the water to meet her lover Mahiwal, one night her wicked sister-in-law replaced the pot with another unbaked one, which dissolved in water resulting in Sohni’s death from drowning.

I happened to visit Sobha Singh Art Gallery at Andretta in Kangra, where he lived for most of his life and painted his masterpieces. The gallery houses ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ that he painted not once but many times. As I stood in awe looking at my favourite painting I was yet again fascinated. Apart from its colours and artistic unity, there is one more thing that I have always found intriguing: from a distance, the two lovers appear to be conjoined like Siamese twins. Sohni’s semi-clad body dominates the canvas and Mahiwal is hidden behind her. Two heads appear to sprout out from the same body. Looking at the painting from a distance, I always thought Mahiwal’s extended elbow to be that of Sohni’s. Even the similarity in the facial features is hard to miss. Mahiwal appears to be a moustached version of Sohni herself. Isn’t the union of two bodies and soul what constitutes love? And how well did Sobha Singh read the passion and depicted the same by merging the selves of the lovers.

Every true artist is aware of this quality of love and passion, i.e., the interchangeability of the selves. In the 2007 popular coming of age novel Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman, that was also adapted into a movie by Luca Guadagnino, we see a similar notion of love. It’s about love, of not two men but two individuals, one is 17-year-old boy Elio and the other one is 24-year-old Oliver.  Even though the painting and the novel are two different art forms inviting different yardsticks to measure their features, they speak of the same passions. Both are magical mediums. One of the major thrusts of the novel is Elio’s and Oliver’s desire to become each other. Elio is attracted to Oliver’s maturity, good looks and charms. Oliver is attracted to Elio’s assurance, knowledge, confidence and courage. They come up with a unique way to translate their mutual desire to become one another: they call each other by their own names. Elio calls Oliver as Elio; Oliver calls Elio as Oliver.

Like the immortal tale of Sohni and Mahiwal’s love, this work is also a heart-breaking expression of love and its irreversible loss conjoined with a desire to achieve similitude and amalgamation of the selves. Art is a very affecting agent. The organic nature of an artist’s vision can probe deep into the depths of emotions.  As Sobha Sigh said, “Art is the language of the heart.”

History Lessons in a Bank

0

I wanted to open a bank account  in a newly opened State Bank of India branch in my locality. I went there. I was early. When I entered the bank, the security guard was the only employee present at the gate with a rifle in his hand, as is common to see at the gates of banks.

I sat inside waiting for other bank officers who subsequently came in a few minutes.

While I was waiting, the security guard started to talk about his hometown Ara. He had left his town in search of employment and was here since many years. Nostalgic and proud, he told me of some tunnels in his town which had recently been in news. The tunnels were used by Veer Kunwar Singh to facilitate his movement from Jagdishpur to Ara while he was giving the British a miss.

Meanwhile, the other employees started coming. The person who would be handling my account opening forms and formalities came. After some time the branch manager came. They settled into their respective positions- the clerk at his counter and the manager in his somewhat open cabin.

The guard wished them good morning and continued with the story of Veer Kunwar Singh and his home town.

“Ho Gaya. Jyada mat boliye; apna kaam kariye“, the Bank manager said to the guard as he came out of his cabin after a few minutes.

Meaning – “Its enough. Stop blabbering and do your work“.

The guard was silent and sat at his post quietly thereafter.

However, his banter had already incited my interest in the city Ara, the tunnel at the Ara house, also called Veer Kunwar Singh Sangrahalaya and the man himself.

“Araah“, also called “Ara” was the same sleepy small town about two hours drive from my home town where a number of my relatives came from. I did not know it had anything of importance, forget about something as exciting as a tunnel which opens out in Jagdishpur 31 kilometers away. This tunnel, now blocked, was used by freedom fighters during the national movement.

What was even more remarkable was that Veer Kunwar Singh was eighty years old when he plunged into the first battle against British in 1857. The tunnel is said to have an opening around the location of the Museum named after him. The tunnel was a mere prop which incited my interest. The man behind it was the main interest.

An expert in guerilla warfare, Veer Kunwar Singh assumed command of a group of soldiers and occupied Arrah. He kept moving and gave the British a tough time. Severely wounded by British whiel crossing the Ganga, he cut his own arms and offered to the river. Next day he fought his last battle near Jagdishpur and completely routed the British forces. Subsequently, he died after the victory.

The university in the town Ara, established in 1992, is named after him. There is a museum in his name in the town. There might be a postage stamp in his honor too. Besides that, there is minimal recognition of him in the freedom struggle of the country. He has still not got his due in the history of Indian freedom struggle and in the hearts of Indians.

When we look around ourselves and see what eighty year old men are engaged in, it would give us a perspective of the valor and might of the octagenarian.

At eighty he goes into active combat battle, chops with his own hands his wounded limbs and offers to Ganga Maa for fear of poisoning his body. The British could never catch him. Whenever one feels helpless or old, this is the man whose spirit has to be invoked.

I was thankful to the the security guard for reminding me of this amazing figure from our shared history. Taking pride in ones roots was a trait I understood well and respected deeply.

During my undergraduate studies, whenever jokes on my home state were made and that was often, I used to take an aggressive stance in defense. I had earned the sobriquet of “Rabri Devi”. As beautiful and elegant as Rabri Devi is, when one is twenty or for that matter of any age, to be called “Rabri Devi” is not a complement; not as a politician, not as a politician’s wife, not as a politician’s mother and not as an inconsequential undergraduate student. I had never cared.

In the bank, I met a brother of my soul, taking pride in his history and heritage in spite of being snubbed by senior, highly educated officers. The legend from my home state reminded me that we both were more than our accents popularised by the supposedly very funny Lalu Prasad Yadav Ji.

It is time to remember, rise and reclaim our rightful place in the country and in the world. The Octagenarian is blessing us – “Jai Bhawani“.

What Modi did for the Indian Armed Forces

0

As I pen down my first column, and that too on account of analyzing what the NaMo Govt did for the National Security of the country by enhancing, supporting and enriching the Defense Forces, I feel extremely nostalgic having to experience the goosebumps. Moreover, NaMo is one hell of an unequivocal leader with respect to clarity of thoughts in whatever he persues. As they say, “You can like him, dislike him. But you can’t ignore him.”

Leaving aside the fact that the rattled opposition, dead Wires, Pseudo Quints and the likes alleges NaMo of politicizing the Surgical Strikes and the Balakot AirStikes, I take this opportunity of elaborating and sharing some of the tremendous achievements of the Modi Govt in strengthening the Defense system of India. In a nutshell, the modernisation of Defense forces has been going on at full pace and this government has been on its heel with this regard.

My Vote for BJP. My Vote to Modi

DMK has let down Tamil pride and dignity

0

The countermanding of Vellore parliamentary constituency election in Tamil Nadu after the haul of massive cash from the close aid of the prominent DMK leader and the soul keeper of MK Stalin, Mr. Durai Murugan as appeared in the news, has really affected the credibility of Tamil pride.

DMK has really made the state –Tamil Nadu to appear the most corrupt state in India. Earlier it was perceived and to some extent made to believe that Tamil Nadu politicians are the most corrupt as most of the big ticket corruption allegations in UPA1 and 2 were predominantly around DMK ministers such as 2G, Aircell-Maxis, Telephone cable scam etc.

In Indian politics, Tamil Nadu was looked down due to all the above scam allegations and in every occasion, Tamil Nadu was the talking point. DMK came to existence in Tamil Nadu politics through riddling Tamil pride and regional chauvinism. Caste elimination and social justice were also used by the party to win election.  But today the social justice of the party is limited to own family than to people of the state.

Further converting the state politics to caste centric was innovated and introduced by none other than DMK. The money confiscated by IT authorities from the close aid of the prominent leader of DMK, Durai Murugan alleged to be paid to people to vote for his son who is contesting from Vellore under DMK ticket, was quite huge, it comes to several crores, as per the report.

If DMK is quite sure of winning the election, why then they engaged in cash for vote is the big question that boggles the people of Tamil Nadu. If DMK has done enough social justice to the people of India, then why DMK is engaging in cash for vote?

Another question also needs to be debated. From where does DMK has mobilized this much money? If DMK is spending this much money then how they would recover the expenditure other than by engaging in scams and corruption is the answer for the corrupt legacy of the party.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working hard to clean up our system, make India free of corruption, nepotism and dynastic politics but the alliance of congress partner in Tamil Nadu; the DMK is proving its politics nothing but full of bribe, negativity, hatred, spreading lies and promoting dynastic politics.

Should people of Tamil Nadu want this party to rule the state? People of Tamil Nadu must search their soul for an answer. People should not confuse with the fact that the other alternative is not un-corrupt. The question is who is worst, which party can destroy the state, which party is promoting the culture of corruption, nepotism and dynasty in the state, which party has tarnished the image, Bhakti tradition of Tamil Nadu and its reputation so badly, which party has introduced hate politics, politics of anti-God, anti-Hindu rhetoric in Tamil Nadu politics, which party has divided people based on caste formula to win election….all these questions would yield only one answer that is DMK.

Tamil Nadu politics was polluted with corruption allegation by DMK and that was the reason why the then treasurer of DMK, MGR resigned from the party and the Sarkaria commission vindicated DMK to institute scientific method of corruption. In the recent times, the cash for vote formula was introduced by DMK in Tirumangalam. The biggest contribution of DMK is that it has not only institutionalized corruption in India but also exploited the poverty of people in the state by buying their vote for cash.

Tamil Nadu has been let down by DMK. People of the state must wake up to the reality and must vote for AIADMK-BJP alliance to save the state from dynastic politics.

MGR and Amma stood for certain values, never engaged in hate politics, politics of negativity, never promoted anti-God, anti-Hinduism, never spitted anger against any particular community or caste.  In a sense MGR and Amma always stood for sab ka vikas politics of Narendra Modi.

EPS has inherited the great legacy of Amma and is doing full justice to the vision of Amma along with the guidance of OPS. State government in friendly relation with central government is must for the development of the state and that is how EPS government could do so many welfare schemes for people of the state.

For letting down the pride and dignity of Tamils, for institutionalizing corruption in Indian politics, promoting the politics of hatred and anti-God, anti-Hindu sentiments, promoting the politics of dynasty and nepotism, people of the state must punish DMK and must elect Narendra Modi led alliance with massive margin. Hope Tamil Nadu will be saved and the state would make Modi once again our dear Prime Minister.

Efficiency has value in politics & sports

0

People-pleasing has no value in politics and sports. Only efficient ones are given the chance to emerge as winners in the end. During the elections, the political party declares a candidate on the basis of the past performance. It aims at winning the seat so considerations on all aspects remain under discussion. Likewise, the selection committee chooses one cricket player solely on the basis of the overall performance. Therefore selection criterion in both the places remains similar.

If the political party bets on a sure-shot candidate, the BCCI also eyes on an efficient cricketer helpful in achieving the winning target. People-pleasing, as an expression, appears so pleasant like something we would all like to make, but it is awfully detrimental to our own links. Selecting the 15-member cricket team for the World Cup is no less difficult than securing the political party’s ticket for contesting a parliamentary seat in the general elections.

This squad is the best that can achieve the goal of winning the title, as has been stressed by veteran cricketers. The present condition is different from the year 2011 and the year 2015. The politicians apply several tactics to win over the top leaders’ hearts in their very endeavor to obtain the compulsory ticket. However, the party high command did not fail to consider the traditional criterion of the past record.

This factor also applies in the game of cricket when the team is selected for the big tournament. Only the hurt player was denied inclusion for the physical fitness remains hampered in such a case. The team selection for the ensuing World Cup in England and Wales evoked a few criticisms too. One player was injured, other player leaked enough byes and one more experienced wicket-keeper was selected for the Indian squad in the 2019 World Cup.

As the World Cup matches are scheduled to be held from May 30, this year, the selectors decided to give Dinesh Karthik a chance to play as the keeper. He was part of the country’s team that had toured England in the year 2007, 2013 and 2018 respectively. Gambhir thinks Pant had still age on his side but Karsan Ghavri, former pacer, feels 21-year-old Pant should have made to the squad. His views are shared by Ricky Ponting,  Sourav Ganguly, Virendra Sehwag, and several others.

However, the selectors discussed at length over the choice between Dinesh Karthik and Rishab Pant. The selectors were Virat Kohli & five others led by MSK Prasad, BCCI chairman of selectors. Prasad stressed that they were the biggest topic of debate in the selection meeting in Mumbai. We were in total agreement either Pant or Karthik will only come when Dhoni was injured.

Pant was supposed to have lost place because of his inability in controlling the ball as wicket-keeper in Southampton Test and conceded as many as 30 huge runs as byes. India then lost the Test match by a margin of 60 runs. This was the main grudge behind his failure for securing a confirmed place.

Nevertheless, part of him would feel like he failed in his amazing attempt to be in the final set of the cricket team. It somehow resembled that he was not efficient enough, or strong enough, or good enough player to ably prevent his exclusion from happening. Like, somehow he was a liability. The players go through such sort of ordeal very often. It was definitely normal, usual and routine.

Conversely, politicians have no such problem. If they are famous enough to catch people’s eyes, they are heartily and hastily accepted in the new political party. If not selected in the team they seldom waste precious time in becoming the darling of the new party with a new flag. The options remain open until the voracity of their passion for politics does not die down.
