Irrational liberals: How Brahmins who were being continuously persecuted during medieval centuries could have persecuted Dalits in Mughal/British times ?

The popular narrative that Brahmins have been persecuting Dalits for the past several thousand years have many glaring gaps and these gaps hint at the possibility of setting up a mischievous campaign led by the left liberal and supported by hardcore Islamists to malign Hinduism. Whatever the divide may be existing between sawarna and awarna, it is more of a social nature that normally changes with changing financial and power structures within the society and have contestable religious sanctions. The correctness of Manusmriti among its fifty odd versions has remained under doubt. And even in that, a chosen few of the verses that are often quoted to prove that persecution of lower Varna (not caste) had some religious sanction fail to impress.

This is because one finds another verse in the same Manusmriti that is almost has contradictory meaning. And alsi since ‘Smritis’ have never been accepted as holy and as sacred as the Vedas and Puranas. On the contrary, the divide between hardcore Islamists and Dalits exists on rabid religious grounds originating out of real hate of Islamists against Kafirs. The hateful and bloody campaigns carried out by the Islamist invaders against the non-muslims (Kafirs) during the medieval era have been on such a scale and intensity that all attempts to whitewash this has been proven insufficient.

Such attempts of giving mischievous intellectual twists to semi-cooked facts by liberals in general and a few Islamists in particular have not yielded any visible success. While ‘reservation policy’ to correct the mistreatment against ‘Awarnas’ has been accepted by Hindus grudgingly or otherwise to a satisfying scale, anything similar has been summarily rejected in Pakistan and Bangladesh and in the contrary a medieval-like policy of denial of equal opportunity had found approval in a Muslim majority state Kashmir under the influence of Islamist forces.

Divide between ‘Bheem’ and ‘Meem’ is far more real and religious, while between Sawarna and Awarna is hardly a match to that. Islamist forces backed by liberals have miserably failed in their attempt to use their semi-cooked half-stories of persecution of Awarnas allegedly carried out with religious sanctions by Sawarnas to ignite hate among them against Hinduism. Their attempts have led to a limited success that is hopelessly restricted to a small fringe within ‘educated’ Dalits. Historically, Dalit movements to find access in temples have found much larger and much spontaneous support within the community as compared to the campaigns to put them against Hindu idols and Gods. Sawarkar and Ambedkar working on such campaigns were hated therefore by these liberals and Islamist forces.

A reflexive incompatibility can be noticed between Islamists and Dalits even in the modern era despite institutional efforts to bring them together on a common platform against the upper caste Hindus. This only hints at something that we have never been academically allowed to explore. The divide between them is more than what meets our eyes. Ambedkar had hinted that muslim brotherhood is not universal and is only targeted within their religious fold. He believed, they can’t think of brotherhood with non-muslims. For them Kafirs are not merely non-muslims but are anti-muslims. Dalits are in fact historical witness to the Islamic atrocities purely on religious grounds during the brutal medieval era.

All the recent political misadventures to bring Dalits and Islamists together and counter what they call as upper caste hegemony have failed. J. N. Mondal experiment attempted by Jinnah to club Dalits with Muslims in the name of Pakistan failed in no time. The continuing religious persecution of Dalits in Pakistan, their status as untouchables finds root in their hate against Kafirs. Similar treatments to Dalits often get reflected also in Kashmir, Mewat and at many places where muslim are in majority even in today’s India.

Let us discuss the possible structure of our society existed in ancient Bharat when we used to contribute almost one third of the world GDP. In 300 BC, the celebrated Greek historian Megasthenes had identified seven professional classes of communities in his narration ‘Indica’ wherein he mentioned that all these communities were prosperous in the then Bharat. And since this existed before industrialization took place, there is little scope of only a few industrialists accumulating the entire wealth. This must help us in concluding that when we used to rule over the world’s business, we probably had communities instead of individuals who were proficient in their respective professions/business models.

A community dealing in the business of extracting iron from its ore and making iron-goods would have been prosperous because their products were exported to the entire world. Similar story would have been true for those who were engaged in the production of other metals, cotton and silk textile, artisans, building and temple architecture, sculpture, music, dealing in extraction of oils from seeds, producing leather products, engaged in the business of fish or meat, working in different products of farming and so on. All these communities must have been functioning like today’s closed industrial groups and must have been following/promoting interest of their respective communities. They preferred marriages within the community most likely to ensure easy adaption of the business environment by the new family member and also to secure their business secrets.

We realize now that we have lost the knowledge of producing the quality of cast iron that was used in the Iron pillar installed in the Qutab Minar complex. We lost the know-how of producing high quality zinc, copper, brass, metallic salts and other alloys. We lost the technical knowledge of scientific processes such as sublimation, calcinations, distillation used to produce dyes, cement and other chemicals. We lost the knowledge of how to build high quality architectural structures that exist even today in the form of temples, forts and baolis. We lost the know-how of creating beautiful sculptures, we have lost the knowledge of mountain cutting techniques that is there for our display at Ajanta, Ellora and Mahabalipuram and we also lost our unbelievable stone carving wonder methods. We also lost the knowledge of producing superfine export quality cotton and silk textile products.

We must have lost these knowledge during the brutal medieval invasions as the communities engaged in these activities and keeping their business/art secrets safe, were either eliminated by the religious expansionist invaders or killed for some other reasons yet to be investigated. This loss must have further got aggravated due to Industrialization of Europe and England when the ruler-British would have ensured that India loses its status of being producers and becomes a nation of buyers and users. In all these cases, such a sudden loss of knowledge/profession within many communities must have led to the downfall in their financial status resulting in formation of hierarchy among them that was not noticed earlier by Megasthenes in his ‘Indica’ in 300 BC.

Continuous changes in the financial and power equation must have led to one community ignoring the interest of others to protect themselves. It is also not unconvincing to realize that some of these communities might have protected their own interest at the cost of the others. The transformation of the division between castes and communities from ‘horizontal’ to ‘vertical’ resulting in creation of hierarchy must have found basis during this period of religious, financial and professional uncertainties. The hierarchy therefore is more ‘Medieval’ than ‘Braminical’ in nature.

Some of these communities that had lost their business in the inhuman medieval era of brutal invasions, must have become dependent on the ruler of the time and would have been left with no other choice but to follow the option of pursuing a profession imposed on them, howsoever unwilling they might have been. These factors could be the reason for Yadavas of Krishna fame, Kushwaha and Maurya of Ashoka and Candragupt Maurya fame, Valmiki samaj of Valmiki rishi fame to get identified with lower castes, SCs and STs in the modern India.

The culture of research and development in science and technology pursued by scientists (read Brahmins) of that era were also destroyed completely in the same barbaric medieval Islamic invasions. Universities like Taxila and Nalanda were razed with their libraries burnt and Brahmin saints and monks working as teachers with shaved heads and sacred threads, killed. The scientists engaged in research in Ayurvedic medicines, development of vaccines, methods of surgery, astronomical calculations and other scientific developments were either killed or forced to pursue menial jobs as priests.

Requirement of a profession such as manual scavenging could never have existed in the ancient Bharat as it is projected by the liberal lobby and supported by the Islamist forces in India. All the villagers of even modern India (almost without exceptions) and a significant urban population were still used to visit open fields for defecation before Modi’s toilet construction initiative began a few years ago. Being predominantly a village based country there would have never been any significant requirement of manual scavengers. The Indus valley or Harappan civilization had very advanced idea of town planning having functional toilets with flowing water and therefore could also be having in all probability the technical know-how of cleaning the same with least manual involvement.

The continuity of that civilization with the current population is impossible to get established without accepting a catastrophic break in between. In our current continuity of civilization, we know a Bharat that had idea of homes without toilets and were known for using water of rivers and ponds to clean during our daily morning routine. The narrative therefore built up by some that we had a community assigned to clean up excreta from individual homes manually is only mischievously set up and do not stand the scrutiny of logic and rationality.

The job of manual scavenging must have sprung up only in the medieval period with Turkish invaders who came with the idea of home commodes. They came also with very strict purdah system that did not exist in our land of open culture as depicted in the sculptures built on a host of ancient temples of Bharat from Kiradu to Khajuraho to Konarka temples. Islamic rulers who used to observe very strict purdah and patriarchy system must have helped in percolating this conservative attitude down to all the rich and influential communities of our society first and then to others. In south Indian state of Kerala, this purdah culture that was identified to be associated with the influential class did not used to allow the native Bhartiya women to cover their bodies just to make them feel inferior. Imposition of breast tax in the society that was not used to covering their breasts, was only to keep the distinction intact between influential class and slaves intact under foreign influence.

Islamic rulers enjoyed their stay in India exploiting our capacity of wealth creation but also kept on inflicting deep wounds in the structure of our prosperous and open society by converting it into patently hierarchical and strictly patriarchal structures to suit their habit, tradition, culture and their mission of religious expansion. Dalits came into being during this period historically. Social scientists have until now not been allowed by the liberal-historians to do research on the reason and manner of emergence of Dalit and Mahadalit communities during a period when actually Brahmins were being religiously persecuted continuously, were killed on a massive scale and were humiliated at will of the medieval rulers. It is now becoming clear that left liberals have very mischievously projected Brahmins as the persecutors despite the open and accepted fact that they themselves were being mercilessly persecuted for at least last ten centuries at the hands of British and Islamic rulers like Taimur, Muhammad Gori, Khalji, Mehmud Gajnavi, Muhammad bin Quasim, Tipu Sultan, Babar and Aurangzeb.

11 years of work but no salary!

0

It was the year 2009, a 9 year old me was excited that my mother had got a job as a professor in a Government Aided College. Her field of study was Mathematics. She was so into Mathematics that she taught me and my brother to get above 90 per cent in our High school exams, later. Her understanding skills were profound and not only did she have knowledge in mathematics but also in the education industry as a major in Med and Mphil also.

She was a hard worker, who didn’t get paid by the government due to internal church politics, as her college comes under Church, being a Christian institution. The case of professors like my mom, totally 30 professors who had required qualifications were taken to the Supreme court, which finally released an order on the year 2019, 10 years after she joined the work, that my mom and the other professors have legal rights to get their salaries. It has been 11 years, all the hard work she has done with passion in her eyes and intellect in her mind hasn’t been paid off well. She has seen 10 years of students who had studied under her, get their salaries for the work they have done. The church demanded bribe even after the order from the supreme court, that the professors have legal right to claim the salary for their work. The professors were not ready to pay the bribe. We are living in a country where one has to pay a bribe to get their own hard-earned money, what kind of justice is there?

The government, the college institution and also the church which supports the college didn’t concern well into the case of the 30 professors. 30 Professors were not seen as a family but as an individual who has no authority to claim for their rights. We are living in a country were Rights to Freedom of Speech is appreciated, yet why was the case of the 30 professors not given attention? Even after the case has been solved in the supreme court with an order to give the concerned salary along with 11 years salary to the professors, the government demands a bribe to have the professors provide with their salaries. When did bribery become the master of attaining an employer’s due salary?

I sometimes ask my mother how she worked for 11 years with no salary but with a smile. She always responds it was because that she knew every day has to be purposeful, though she didn’t get her salary, she has some passion and purpose to get up each new day, go to college and give a student life. She has always been an inspiration to the people around her. She always had the beam of sunlight that no one could ever have. Not only did she teach us maths, but she has also taught us “Patience” and “Optimism”.She is a very good problem solver and a great counsellor because I know no one would have survived the mental torture of not getting paid for years. She often refers it to invisible war between the Good and the Bad. She taught us that Good always wins no matter what.

She taught us happiness is a choice and only a few chooses it. Among the few, she was one I knew. She has always been a difference to me and my brother and I know, she always will be! One thing I knew for sure, even in my future if I ever come across a hard time, I knew my mother has already gone threw it, the invisible war between good and evil. And I will go through it too! I am writing this in the year 2020, now I am an engineering student, freelance writer and my brother is a business student in IIM. If not for our mother, we wouldn’t have had the courage to pursue our fields of interest. It is still sad news that she didn’t get paid till now but she always tells that with a smile, always hoping for a better tomorrow with million wishes and hopes.

The MODI-fied year will be remembered for ever

0

The first year of second term of Narendra Modi led BJP government will probably have the same significance as the year 1947 in history of India. The unexpected have become true. This year people witnessed resolution of decades old problems, bold reforms for development of nation, measures for the progress of every citizen and an unexpected battle with corona. Government had utmost dedication, honesty and vision while taking decisions.

After independence some issues were left unresolved like Kashmir, Article 370, Triple Talak, Ayodhya Ramamandir and the persecuted minorities of Pakistan. These issues would have been solved decades back as the past congress governments had more than required number of seats in parliament. But what was lacking was will and determination by the past congress governments to solve the issue. The issues increased becoming threat to national integrity and security. In one month, article 370 and 35 A were abrogated and Ladakh was made Union territory (UT) separating from Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). J&K was made UT with partial state hood status.

This will pave for development of Kashmir and justice for women, marginalized Dalits and minorities. The anarchic practice of Triple Talak which caused brutal agony to millions of Muslim women was banned. Triple talak practice, which was banned in many Islamic countries including Pakistan, was continued in India due to congress government’s policies. Indian women can never forget the injustice done by Rajiv Gandhi government in Sha Bhano case. Supreme court delivered historic Ayodhya Ram mandir judgement and construction work of Ram mandir has finally begun. Modi government then brought in Citizenship Amendment Act doing justice to religiously persecuted minorities in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Citizens thought that these issues will never be resolved. The government has solved these long-standing issues with dedication and determination.

This year there were major reforms in many sectors to promote overall development. Many steps were initiated to promote agriculture and improve income of farmers. Around 72000 crores have been transferred to 14.2 crores farmers through PM kisaan Samman Nidhi Yojana. Kisan credit cards issued to farmers. Cold storage and fast transport of perishable agri items will be done using trains and aeroplanes through “Kisaan Rail” and “Krishi Udaan”. PM Krishi Sanchai Yojana to promote micro irrigation and farming of pulses. Solar pumps to be given to 20 lakh farmers. MSP was increased to 150% of production cost. To benefit Indian farmers and small industries Modi government decided not to join Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). To encourage industries in India several measures were taken. Most important one being reduction of corporate tax to 22-25% similar to countries like Singapore. Other important measures taken are merging banks, removing angel tax on startups, no surcharge on foreign portfolio investments (FPIs), lesser interest rates, disinvestment, etc. The ranking of ease of doing business improved from 142 to 63 Merging BSNL and MTNL and a package of 68,751 crores for revival.

Banks deposit insurance raised from one lakh to five lakhs. Simplified GST will be implemented from 1 april,2020. Companies need not pay Dividend distribution tax. New investment clearance cell will be set up for entrepreneurs. Real estate tax holiday extended by one year. Policy for single window e-logistics clearances will be established. 27,300 crores allotted for encouraging industries and commerce. To boost “Make in India” incentives will be given for encouraging exports and duties will be levied on some imports. For SMEs the turnover for audit has been increased from 1 crore to 5 crores. Increase liquidity support to NBFCs by government guaranteeing securities. Measures will be taken to provide SMSE more cash from banks and NBFCs. 3.5 lakh crores cash to be provided to government banks. Big boost is given to start ups. Tax holiday of 5 years will be given for startups with turnover up to 100 crores. 2.1 lakh crores to be raised by dis investment. Tax slabs were revised providing benefit to tax payers. Tax charter is created.

Several measures were implemented for the welfare of the needy. More than one crore patients have utilized Ayushman Bharath scheme for their health needs. More than 5.5 crores people have joined in Atal Pension Yojana. “Atal Bhujal Yojana” is launched to save groundwater in 8,350 villages. “Jal Jeevan Mission” was launched with 3.6 lakh with a mission to provide piped water to every house and saving water resources. A road map is developed for investing 103 lakhs crores in infrastructure in next 5 years on 6500 projects in drinking water, safe and clean energy, health care, roads, railways, metros, housing, airways, education institutes, logistics, ware housing, irrigation projects. By 2024, 100 new airports to be built under UDAN scheme. Saving environment by reducing plastic usage , promoting plantation and conserving ground water.

A lot of importance has been given to defense sector and army. Long lasting demand of Chief of Defense Staff was finally fulfilled. Defense production target is set at 90,000 crores for indigenous production of equipment like combat aero crafts -Tejas, Long range missiles-Agni, with exports at 15,000 crores. 71,000 crores worth advanced defense equipment deals done and Rafale delivered. Robots to fight terror in Kashmir. The first decision of Modi 2.0 was to increase scholarship of children of martyrs. Annual budget of ISRO is increased to 12,473 crores encouraging projects & business. Historic Bodo Agreement was signed bringing peace in Assam. Bru -Reang Agreement was made to settle the displaced Bru refugees in Tripura.

Entire world faced an unexpected unseen enemy – “Corona”. By March 2020, India started reporting corona cases on a daily basis. Here is where Modi government acted swiftly and bravely and implemented complete lock down at few hundreds of cases. Indigenous production of PPEs, masks, diagnostic kits, ventilators and medical equipment was boosted. With 17.7 % global population and high population density of 424 /square km many institutions predicted millions to crores of cases by May 2020. The situation was controlled with cases at around 2 lakhs by May end and deaths at 5000 by May end. PM Garib Kalyan Yojana with 1.76 lakh crores was announced to take care of the poor and needy during lock down. Ration of 5kg rice or wheat and 1 kg pulses per person was provided for 80 crores poor. A package of 6 lakh crores was allotted for MSMEs, tax payers, DISCOMS, NBFCs, real estate and contractors. Government allotted 3 lakh crores to revive the stressed MSMEs which were in financial stress due to lock down. Interest rates on Mudra-shishu loans have been reduced by 2% for 12 months providing 1500 crores benefit for micro industries.Credit linked subsidy scheme on housing loans providing 6.5% subsidy on interest rates for those with annual income of 6-18 lakhs is extended to March 31,2021.Government has extended duration to file income tax returns to November 30. One Nation – One market was launvhed so that farmers also can sell anywhere in nation and states cannot charge for the interstate sale now. Essential commodities act has been modified by an ordinance removing pulses, cereals, oilseeds, edible oils, onions, potatoes from the list of essential commodities. This benefits farmers by allowing them to sell their crop across India at the price and place of their choice.

Is nepotism in Bollywood a genuine problem or a propaganda to hide something?

As soon as the news about untimely demise of actor Sushant Singh Rajput broke out, Nepotism once again became a hot topic. No matter which platform I looked at, be it Twitter or Facebook or even mainstream media portals, I can find a lot of anger, hatred directed towards certain celebrities.

Is it justified? Is Nepotism in Bollywood actually a problem of this magnitude or is it just a propaganda?

When you look at SSR’s filmography, you will find that he worked with Aditya Chopra and Yash Raj Films in three of his movies i.e. Shudh Desi Romance, Sonchiriya, Detective Byomkesh Bakshi (co-produced with Dibaker Banerjee Productions). Apart from these he also worked with Karan Johar’s Dharma Production for the movie Drive. Although, drive was distributed by Netflix. So, in four out of ten of his total number of movies, he worked with those who are today held responsible for sidelining him based on video clips from some scripted shows like Big Boss or Koffee with Karan. Moreover, Yash Raj Films in 2012 had started a newcomers talent program and SSR was a part of it till 2016. If you look further, you will find that he worked with other big names too.

It does not look like he was a victim of Nepotism. If he were, he wouldn’t have received those offers in the first place. Would he? In fact it definitely looks like he was in their good books. You could have a look at Intellectual Lynching, frustration and suffocation to know about one of the major reasons that could have been a cause of his troubles.

Even though Nepotism does not look like a primary root cause here in this case but it does prevail in Bollywood. Having said that, how is nepotism in Bollywood a public or a social issue? Do we even need to talk about it or worry about it?

Let me ask you a very simple, straight forward but uncomfortable question. Will you, after working your entire life and building a big business, prefer your own son to take over your business or will you hand it over to a stranger who apparently is more talented according to some people? And at the same time leave your own son unemployed.

If you won’t, why should a film maker? Doesn’t it sound a little hypocritic now? Or are you suggesting that the film celebrities should stop having kids? Because if there are kids there would be nepotism.

Unlike Politics or Government institutes or some other public affairs, the various production houses, distributors etc in Bollywood are private businesses. A film actor or a director or a producer puts his entire life in that business, expands it, builds a wide network, establishes contacts. Why should his children not inherit and enjoy the goodwill garnered by him? Shouldn’t it be their prerogative to pick and choose who they want to do business with? It is their private affair. Isn’t it? Moreover, most of these star kids grew up knowing each other. Isn’t it obvious that they will choose each other when the requirement arises? Plus, the star kids would know exactly where to be and when. Being at the right place at the right time makes a lot of difference even when there is a more talented candidate, although standing in a long queue.

The irony is that people find problems with nepotism in private businesses which don’t affect them at all but they are fine with nepotism in politics and policy making, which directly affects them. Just last year, Mr. Rahul Gandhi the epitome of nepotism, whose only qualification is that he is a part of Gandhi-Nehru family, was contesting for the place of the Prime Minister of India; not just any post but the top most post. Not only did he contest, more than 10 crore people voted for him. He had lost more than 25 different elections by that time but still became the president of India’s oldest political party. I don’t think that Indian National Congress is a private business. Is it?

And if you are thinking that the people are changing, or have changed, please hold on to that thought for just a few more months. Mr. Tejashwi Yadav would pretty soon be contesting for the place of chief minister of Bihar. His only qualification is that he is Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son, otherwise he wasn’t even able to pass high school exactly like the star kids that are being abused today. We’ll see how many people vote for him.

The line that separates public affairs from private affairs is the same line that separates nepotism which is as good as a crime from nepotism which is acceptable. It is very simple, if Karan Johar makes a bad movie with an undeserving, unworthy star kid, only a flop movie is made, it would affect him more than anyone else, its he who will lose money. I am not forced to watch that movie. I have a choice to not watch it and even if I end up watching the movie, I end up wasting a couple of hours of my time and a few hundred rupees that too if I watch it in multiplex. But that’s it, nothing more nothing less. However, on the other hand, if an undeserving and unworthy politician is favored to make government policies, we are in a deep trouble. We have no choice but to follow each and every flawed policy approved by him. Those policies would become some act or law or something of that sort. Flawed policies have made a lot of legal activities illegal overnight in the past.

As an example I can only say that unlike a lot of people today, I don’t believe that Pt. Nehru had bad intentions for the nation or was anti-national. But he simply made mistakes, and not just mistakes but blunders. The country has been suffering since then, be it 370 or 35A or China border issues or various constitutional amendments. Nehru might have been an idealist, but he definitely was incapable of leading the country. If only Mahatma Gandhi had not favored him in 1946 against Sardar Patel (who won 13 votes out of 16, where the other 3 did not vote for anybody), we would have been reading an entire different post independence history. He was an unworthy favored recipient.

The point is fighting Nepotism in private businesses like film making is a futile activity, waste of both time and energy. In fact it happens every where, in each and every private business. You could search India’s biggest businesses, you will find families. Tatas, Birlas, Godrej, Ambanis, they were all family businesses at first, and still are to a great extent. As and when they expended, outsiders came along.

A more meaning question that we should be asking is: why are there such a small number of Production Companies or Distributors in the industry? Film industry is not just limited to actors, actresses and acting. It is way bigger and deeper than that. Right?

One obvious answer to this question is that the people from the outside of the industry are attracted to the glamour associated with the films and film stars, so the supply for actors/actresses is way more than the actual demand. The other skills required for film making are still in a nascent stage.

The other and by far the most critical answer is the Mafia; a deep nexus of criminals, underworld, politicians and powerful people with specific ideologies.

Mafia and Nepotism are two very different things, and should not be mixed up. It is this Mafia that is being concealed in the shadow of Nepotism.

Must read: Intellectual Lynching, frustration and suffocation

People like Karan Johar, Sajid Nadiadwala, Dinesh Vijan, Salman Khan and some star kids are relentlessly being targeted. Are they the only ones who promote Nepotism? Why are they targeted and not others? Who decided their names? Somebody must have carved this campaign, right? Can you find the one thing that is common in all of them? If you can find that common thread that ties them together, you can very clearly see the propaganda and feel the Mafia. You don’t have to go and look in their personal lives, you just have to look at their filmography and the changes in ecosystem around film making.

Thank you for reading! If you liked the article please do share it with your friends, might help in reducing the hate that we see on social media today. And please subscribe to the blog so as to receive a notification as and when I come up with the article that highlights the one thing that ties these celebrities together.

Hinduism and its valuable lessons

Arjuna asks Krishna to describe the characteristics of the perfect yogi, Sthitaprajna. Krishna points out that a stable human behaviour implies separation of “I” from the mind. When the mind engages in selfish desires it evaluates success and failures and never gets the freedom. The mind needs diversion from selfish to unselfish desires to get the freedom.

“Manojaya eva mahajayah—Conquest of mind is the greatest victory. Mind is one of the ashta-prakritis earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, reason and egoism these constitute the eight-fold division of My Eternal Energy” says Sri Krishna (Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 7 verse 4).

Manas, the mind is controlled by Buddhi, the intelligence, and has control over Indriyas, the sense organs. If our sense organs are compared to the horses of a chariot, the mind is the leash that is held by intelligence, the charioteer. The chariot will move in the right direction only if the charioteer has control over the horses through the leash. The mind is like the supervisor in the factory of life, and directs the indriyas. The mind does a wonderful job of carrying out directions, but it is not supposed to be the key decision-maker in the factory. That is the job of intelligence. If intelligence is clouded, then the mind has a habit of listening to whoever is speaking the loudest in the factory.

There is conflict between intelligence and mind that is witnessed by our conscience. This is never seen in animals. Let us suppose a landlord who happens to leave his house for a few days orders both his housekeeper and the dog not to go out of the house in his absence. Even though both have violated the order, the dog has no inner conflict and sleeps happily, but the housekeeper is sleepless. He feels guilty and is also ticked off for not following orders. The mind should always listen to intelligence and order the indriyas, and then there would be no conflict of mind and intelligence. When we say we have a disturbed mind then we have done something that our intelligence does not want us to do. The swiftness of the mind is the hindrance for the intelligence to guide it. Hence yoga sutras ask us to reduce the speed of the mind.

In the Yaksha Prashna episode in the Aranya Parva of the Mahabharata, Yama asks Yudhisthira what is the swiftest of all in the universe? Yudhisthira answers that the mind is the swiftest of all, manovega. The mind can travel at unimaginable speed; this has made the mind inconstant. Restless and unpredictable, the mind is an obstruction to peace. Mantra Japa is one way of controlling the restless mind.

A story in the Skanda Purana illustrates this: After the battle of Kurukshetra, Yudhisthira contemplates on performing the Ashwameda Yagya. Krishna who wanted Bheema to know the importance of Mantra Japa asks him to bring Purusha Mruga who lives in Himalayas for the Yagya. Krishna warns Bheema that Purusha Mruga travels at the speed of mind and to bring him he has to travel at that speed failing which the Purusha Mruga would kill and devour him. Bheema who could travel at the speed of wind (Vayuvega) thinks he could bring him. Bheema goes in search of Purusha Mruga and happens to meet his brother Hanuman and tells him about his mission. Hanuman tells Bheema that the only way to keep pace with Purusha Mruga is to place thousand Lingas through the route.

Being a devotee of Shiva, Purusha Mruga would halt at each Linga to chant the thousand names of Shiva thus allowing Bheema to keep pace with him. Bheema succeeded in the mission, his vayuvega could match Purusha Mruga’s manovega since it was slowed down with Mantra Japa.
