Patriarchy: A truth that no real feminist ever talks

0

The word “Patriarchy” is enough to trigger an army of feminists into an outrage. Whose whole lives revolve around the idea that they aren’t doing as well as men because of some historic injustice that no one knows who started, that has no formal structure, by law or even by any other means. So the obvious question is, is it even real? If so, then when did it begin? What is it actually? Or is the term patriarchy a mere target of some leftist propaganda who want the society to be divided on gender lines?

Let’s talk about it. Firstly, what does the term Patriarchy mean? It means, the eldest male of the family leads the rest.

When did it begin? Well, in reality there is no formal date to it. But your feminist friend might tell you that it’s a conspiracy against women, done by men of the world a few thousand years ago. Some 5000 years ago, all men of the world came to terms and decided that they will keep women out of power. Legend has it, though there were no means of communication amongst different civilizations yet, all men of the world managed to communicate and establish the laws of patriarchy, surprisingly which went pretty uniform all across the globe. From Mayans in Mexico to Indians of Indus to tribes of the world, all agreed to subjugate women and agree that men shall have hold onto all the power. Wow, if only all matters were as simple as establishing patriarchy, the world would have been such a beautiful place.

But dear feminist didi, there was no way for different parts of the world to communicate, yet how did they apply the same laws? Wait; there wasn’t even a law, because there was no standard script, no standard languages. Hunt, eat, sleep repeat was pretty much the whole human life with reproductive breaks in between.

So when did it actually begin? Well, even the animals have it. The concept of an Alpha male, where the strongest male leads the gang and has multiple partners is prevalent across the majority of the species. Even the apes have it. And since we humans have evolved out of our monkey cousins, we have inherited their traits as well.

So what now? We are humans now . Since there is no formal date, law or structure then how does patriarchy survive? One simple answer is, security. Men provided women with security, hunted for them and earned for them while women cooked, bore children and took care of the household is pretty much 90% of gender roles across history. But there is another key element, that is leadership and the other is warfare. Men have lead and fought all the wars for their people. Remember any war ? The ones who fell were someone’s son, husband or brothers. 99.99% of all humans who have ever died in war to protect their kin have been men. Just think about it. It was bravery and war that produced leaders. And since men fought wars bravely, they became the leaders.

And for a moment let us invite a silly but famous counter argument , which is ” If women lead the world, there would have been no wars”. Which is a silly argument at best and sheer ignorance at worst. This argument is based on the notion that men fought wars for fun or glory. While in reality wars were always fought for resources and to defend kin’s from enemies, where men bled to death to defend their loved ones.

Further, let’s talk about it. “One day I will find a Prince Charming and my life will be settled , and I will just run away with him”. How common is this childhood dream amongst girls? But ever heard, ” One day I will find a Princess and then my life will be settled” from a boy’s mouth. Probably not. Because from childhood boys are trained to believe that it’s their duty to earn for the household while the opposite gender can relax a bit more. It’s true. Settling down for a male and female mostly means different things. For a man it’s his earning capacity while for a lady it’s not that hard usually. If you disagree just get a 360 degree view of your surroundings. Even amongst the couples with the same qualifications at times you will see the burden of earning for the family is mostly on the man.

And this burden is the crux and the root cause of the power structure that we know as Patriarchy. Remember when Uncle Ben told Peter Parker “With great power comes great responsibility”. Such a good dialogue it was. Even the opposite is true. “With great responsibility comes great power”. Because when one person shares the burden of responsibility more than the other, they naturally assume more power. As wise men of the old times would say, the only way to maintain any power structure of the world is if “Power and responsibility are proportional”.

And this takes us to the main issue. No matter how much you glorify household work. Doesn’t matter if you call a housewife a homemaker. The truth at our disposal is that it’s nothing in comparison to the challenges one has to face in the outside world. The professional world is always more challenging than taking care of the household. And this has always been the case, men have always bore more burden than women and thus they have always yielded more power.

Now I know, thus far I must have gained quite a few titles from my readers. Some fancy words that I dare not mention here. But a fact is a fact. Even today we see the same disparity in roles. Many working women would leave their jobs in their 30s while the men have to go on. While it’s very rare to witness vice-versa of it.

And since the general feminist rhetoric stands on the assumption that men enjoy a position of power while women stand oppressed.

For such rhetoric there is but one perfect reply to this. Once Jordon Peterson, a very famous clinical psychologist said, “Most people who commit suicide are men, most people who die in wars are men, most people who live shorter than the other are men, most people who have excelled in various fields are men, any architectural marvel you have ever seen is built by men, so for a moment stop believing that your father, husband, son and brother are part of a huge conspiracy wherein they want to oppress you”.

The whole feminist rhetoric is based on victimhood psyche and merely divides society on gender lines instead of making the society productive , merely creates us vs. them environment. While in reality men and women are complementary to each other and not opponents.

The bottom line is that the victimhood mentality of feminism isn’t helping anyone. The only way to establish the utopian sense of equality imagined by hardcore feminists is for them to stand up and chase human excellence in their desired fields. Shouting equality for all doesn’t make it a ground reality. It shows when all parts of society work that way.

Since the dawn of the evolutionary cycle of primates, Patriarchy has stood as a phenomenon of nature, while I believe all humans are equal in their rights to be but whether their capability to excel also stands on the same pedestal of equality is still to be seen across the globe.

Ravivarma Kulashekara: The scion of Dharma in God’s own country

0

The year was 1267 AD. Kerala was just a cluster of decentralised feudal states. Even among the states which claimed to have been the legal successors of the Cheras, the grandeur and glory was severely lacking. The small kingdom of Venad was one of these feudal states .The ruler of Venad throughout this period (1266 – 67 AD) was Kota Marthanda Varman. He was the maternal uncle of Ravivarma. Ravivarman’s mother Umadevi, of the Kūpaka (modern day Attingal) family, was the Rāni of the kingdom. The death of the Venad ruler towards the end of 1267 AD in Quilon(Kollam) signalled the outbreak of a long and disruptive succession struggle in Venad between his sons and nephews.

Ravivarman, the son of Umadevi, was a major contender to throne after the death of his uncle Godavarma. He came out successful in the succession struggle and ascended the throne of Quilon in 1299-1300, at the age of 33 (Saka 1221). For more than a decade, he ruled as a vassal under the Pandya ruler Maravarman Kulashekara. This way he was also able to woo and marry a daughter of the Pandya ruler Maravarman Kulasekhara at the age of thirty-three (1299-1300) When the Pandya king Māravarman Kulaśēkhara was apparently killed some time before May1310, Ravivarman “declared” independence from the Pāndyas.

The succession struggle between princes Sundara and Vira Pandya, sons of Maravarman Kulasekhara, and the confusion created by the Khaljī general Malik Kāfūr’s south Indian expedition (1311) helped Ravivarman in his ambitions. The distracted political conditions in Pāndya kingdom gave him an admirable opportunity to plan raids to territories east of the Western Ghats. He defeated many minor Tamil chieftains on his way to Madurai. He seized Madurai from one of the Pandya successors and coronated himself.

Next, he marched to Kanchipuram, the capital of the other Pandya successor. He defeated everyone that stood in his way. After Kanchipuram was captured, a second, more grand coronation was held, where he declared himself as Emperor of the South and Tribuvana Chakravarthin.

One unique thing about him was that he was a devout Hindu who didn’t destroy the temples and shrines of the places he conquered. Infact, he contributed to temples in his conquered territories. The Srirangam records emphasise the restoration of the Ranganatha temple at Srirangam after its destruction by the Islamic forces of Malik Kafur. The Narasimha shrine in the Varadarajaswami Temple accommodates four sub-shrines, one among them is dedicated to the “Malayala Nachchiar” as a divine symbol of the Malayali culture and heritage of Venad empire. The devi is consecrated in a separate shrine. Some scholars assume that the devi was installed here as a gift of the Venad-Chera family, represented by Ravivarman, to the god Varadaraja. The reference to “Cherakulavalli Nachchiar” in an epigraph of this temple lends plausibility to this surmise.

The territorial extent of Venad empire under Ravivarma Kulashekara

His territory extended as far as Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. His fame even reached the ears of Kakatiya kings of Andhra. In one of their inscription they acknowledge his strength and address him as “Malayala Tiruvadi Kulashekara”. According to the esteemed historian A.S.Menon, he was also known for destroying garrisons established by the invader Malik Kafur and halting their further expansion into deep South.

Apart from his military brilliance, Ravivarman is also noted for his services in the field of religion, philosophy, arts and traditions. His court attracted scholars and authors such as Samudrabandha – the commentator of the works of Alankarasarvaswa – and Kavi Bushana. The king also claimed to be a talented musician and author. He supposedly wrote the famous Sanskrit drama Pradyumnabhyudayam specifically for the purpose of being staged in the Sri Padmanābha Swāmy temple in Travancore. The Sri Rangam Inscription calls him the Master as well as the Protector of the Three Vedas.

But unfortunately his supremacy in South India was short lived because of his age related illness and the decentralised ruling system of Venad. His northern expansion was halted by Kakatiyas of Warangal and he lost Nellore and surrounding areas. Kanchipuram also slipped out of his hands after Sundara Pandyan made an Alliance with Kakatiya and their Nayak governering officials.

According to A.S.Menon, Ravivarma Kulashekara died in Kollam due to natural age related causes. This brave son of Bhārat will be remembered in the pages of Hindu history for generations to come.

Is there a Modi-Doval doctrine?

0

The West matters, BJP understands this and so do their leaders in power. Learning from the West is critical, for two reasons. One, where states have failed and two, the successes of the West in improving the quality of life for ordinary people.

If there is a Modi-Doval doctrine, then it’s foundation is based on these two realities. It is a two-part doctrine; to prevent India from imploding from within and to lift the poorest out of desperate poverty.

Implosion from within

The disintegration of Soviet Union not only had a deep impact on Chinese Communist Party, but also on the thinking of the current leadership of India, the main thinker and philosopher here is the National Security Advisor Shri Ajit Doval while PM Modi concurs with Doval. Doval has stated this several times in his speeches, that more nation states have failed due to internal problems rather than external aggression. Doval narrates history since the Treaty of Westphalia from 1648 CE, so he knows the tragedy of continuous wars that destroyed people and states.

Modi-Doval understand that while China can exercise mass population surveillance and control, Indian state is incapable and as a democracy, unwilling to do this. Where China is still more homogenous with majority Han, India has far too many inimical forces within the country, many of these well-funded by foreign regimes.

So Modi-Doval doctrine understands that the threat to Bharat (the civilisational state, of which India is a smaller offshoot) is not really from any opposition parties but from disintegration and destruction due to constant internal issues. BJP is succeeding here and is permanently plugging the gaps in the dike that has the floods of destruction on the other side.

Lift the poorest out of desperate poverty

Second part of Modi-Doval doctrine is Antyodaya, which has been a long-standing BJP principle, literally this is the state focusing on the welfare of the last man (or bottom most) in the society. This is the second learning from the West, that unless the horrendous poverty that has been afflicting the Indian masses for decades was addressed quickly, the state would implode.

Today, someone like me can state a shocking opinion (based on detailed facts) that the poorest in United States of America are living a lower standard of life than the poorest in India! This is the biggest achievement of the BJP government. This has only happened since BJP came to power with their hardcore implementation of mass welfare policies in healthcare, direct cash transfers, subsidised essentials, electricity, drinking water, toilets, bank accounts, identity cards, digital infrastructure and so on. All this is funded by expansion of taxation, growth of the economy, huge infrastructure spending and structural reforms in several sectors. Here again, China was the forerunner is lifting the Chinese out of poverty decades back, but India is catching up fast.

India, an ungovernable state

India has been ungovernable since British suzerainty. British India (undivided) had 565 princely states and their predatory state structure was far removed from any notions of public welfare, hence the many famines under British rule. They made rudimentary state structures based on monopoly of state violence and a lot of violence at that! India inherited these structures and till date the Indian state has been using those structures to enforce the state’s writ rather than to actually deliver good governance. This direction of travel was bound to result in the Indian state failing or disintegrating. Mass evangelical conversions in several parts of India under UPA were just exploiting state condoned poverty. But even these would not stop the implosion of the Indian state. The predatory nature of the Indian state is so intertwined with the governing structures that the people who inhabit these from the politicians to judiciary, legislature, policing, bureaucracy, right down to the lowest state apparatchik, do not even notice them.

Since 1977, India has seen several coalition governments, including the UPA coalition for a decade under Manmohan Singh Coalitions. Coalitions are self-serving entities that cannot make much progress in matters of the state, they favour status-quo, compromise and indecisiveness. This policy paralysis has afflicted India for decades.
So you have a predatory state coupled with an indecisive one trying to deal with hellish poverty-driven human suffering of millions, such a state cannot last.

This was broken in 2014, although NDA on paper is a coalition, it is essentially BJP in power. And here comes Amit Shah, who would concur with Modi-Doval doctrine by winning them centre and state elections ensuring strong governments that can actually deliver. BJP knows that only winning elections can prevent the Indian state from failing because unless you are in power, you cannot look after the poorest – Antyodaya, the second integral part of the Modi-Doval doctrine.

Modi-Doval doctrine’s unpopular decisions

Actions that BJP government takes can at times seem against patriotic priorities or against the interests of Sanatan Dharma. But if one sees their decisions from the lens of this two-fold doctrine, then one can understand why they rolled back the excellent farm laws, did not touch Shaheen Bagh foreign funded protestors, did not act against post-election violence in Bengal and so on.

Unless the state is strong enough, it cannot endanger itself. All of the so called ‘colour’ revolutions from middle-eastern states (Arab Spring) to post-Soviet states like Ukraine toppled governments using just a few thousand protestors within very short time frames of weeks or months. It is a known fact that they were all orchestrated and funded by external forces while the protestors were easily manipulated into channelling their genuine employment or governance grievances to help regime change. Not all of them succeeded, but it’s worth noting the extent:
Georgia 2003, Ukraine 2004, Kyrgystan 2005, then they toppled Kyrgyz government in 2010, Lebanon 2005, Belarus 2006 then again in 2021, Myanmar 2007, Malaysia 2007 & 2016, Moldova 2009, Iran 2009-10, Tunisia 2010, Egypt 2011, Bahrain 2011-14, Russia 2011-13, Armenia 2018, Bolivia 2019, Kazakhstan 2022.

One can blame all sorts of foreign agencies or states for these regime changes or states failing. But the reality is that these states neither foresaw these upheavals nor could they deal with them. Except a few like Kazakhstan and Russia, the state structures just surrendered. Remember, no foreign military aggression caused these so-called colour revolutions, these were all internal problems.

So, if Modi-Doval act with extreme caution and succeed in downing the flames of such manufactured protests in India, then that is a success. They have learnt the right lessons. The second part of improving the lot of the poorest is still work in progress and it will be a while till the justified or unjustified grievances of the teeming masses are addressed. But this progress has been the fastest under BJP and most importantly, has been implemented well by the BJP government.

Mahua Moitra, Goddess Kali & the gang

During first week of July 2022, Ms. Mahua Moitra, the MP of TMC from West Bengal, has gleefully entered into a controversy by making loose remarks on Goddess Kali. In Sanatan Dharma Goddess Kali has ten forms viz: Dakshina Kali, Matangi Kali, Chhinnamasta, Shamsana Kali, Bagala, Bhairavi, Tara, Shodoshi, Kamala and Dhumavati. Each form has distinctive set of attributes. The variation in the names of Kali, mentioned above, may also be present from place to place.

In Sanatan Dharma there are six traditions viz: Shaiva, Baishnav, Shakta, Ganaptya, Kumarik and Surya. Unlike the Muslims, followers of one tradition of Sanatan Dharma do not call followers of other traditions as non-Sanatani. This is the beauty of tolerant and inclusive Sanatan Dharma. Followers of Shakta tradition worship Mother Goddess in different forms and Kali is one of those forms. Again, system of worshiping Kali, like any other God or Goddess, can be different. Under Tantrik System, meat of sacrificial he-goat and wine are offered to Kali.

In West Bengal, Tantrik system of Kali worship is performed in ‘Tarapith Temple’ only. Mahua Moitra has selectively referred to ‘Tarapith Temple’ to establish her agenda driven point. But Secretary of ‘Tarapith Temple’ has criticized Mahua Moitra for her loose tongue on Goddess Kali. Tantrik system is not dominant among Hindu Bengali of West Bengal. Annual ‘Kali Puja’ (‘Puja’ means worship in Bengali) is celebrated on the day of Diwali in tens of thousands of clubs across West Bengal, where members of the clubs eat meat and drink wine liberally.

This club culture of eating meat and drinking wine in annual Kali Puja has been an extension of ruling party’s activity in the state of West Bengal since 1970s. Mahua Moitra mixed-up that club culture and Tantrik System of Kali Puja very badly. She, strangely enough, took the role of sole representative of all Hindu Bengali and only spokesperson of Kali Puja.

This is the problem of liberal Hindus, like Mahua Moitra (and Shashi Tharoor and many more), who do not have basic understanding of Sanatan Dharma and try to explain it through their Abrahamic Binary Vision of ‘either this or that’ and misplaced information base. But Sanatan Dharma is too multi-dimensional and too complex for them to comprehend.

Unlike Nupur Sharma (who told the full truth), Mahua Moitra told partial-truth about Mother Kali. But she remained as responsible as Nupur Sharma for mocking religious belief and sentiment of some community. Fortunately for Mahua Moitra, there is no concept of blasphemy in Sanatan Dharma.

It is funny to see that of all Hindu liberals, Swara Bhaskar has jumped in the bandwagon of Mahua Moitra and started crying ‘more strength to Mahua’s voice’ in Jihadi Twitter. This is the same Swara Bhaskar who participated in a TV debate on CAA two years back without reading the Act and the TV anchor, Rubika Liyaquat, extracted a stupid out of her in that live show.

Leena Manimekali, the original perpetrator of Kali controversy, made Goddess Kali an immoral and ill-informed entity by showing her smoking cigarette and remaining oblivious of the bad health impact of smoking. Leena also went further by leveling Kali as anti-Capitalism and anti-Hindutva. What a messed-up brain Leena has! For her, Kali was a convenient Hindu Goddess who could be shaped as per her Jihadi-Leftist requirements. Will Leena depict her mother as a call girl to score a few ‘Liberal Points’?

The most important attribute of Goddess Kali, Leena forgot, was slaying the demons. Today’s demons are violent Jihadis and disruptive Leftists. Mahua’s Kali is also accompanied by two Chudels, one on each side, who are named Dakini and Yogini. The three-some of Mahua, Swara and Leena may decide who among them will be the two Chudels.

The cabal against Modi and Hindu India

0

India had started her own journey in 2014 as a proud civilizational nation with at least 5000 years of rich and glorious Hindu heritage. It is this heritage that has made Bharat a truly liberal and welcoming place for people of all creed and religion. It is the magnanimity of the Bharatiyas that allowed Muslims to continue in Bharat even after the bloodsheds of the partition and creation of separate Muslim states.

Even then, in the name of secularism and minority rights, equal rights and practices are denied to Hindus especially in the areas of welfare, education and religious administration. When such legitimate demands are made, the left-liberal Indian media like the Hindu, the Wire, the Caravan, the Scroll and the NDTV and western media eg the New York times, the Washington Post, the Economist get their heckles raised and start blaming the protesting people, the RSS, the BJP and the incumbent govt. of fascism, majoritarianism, anti-secularism, authoritarianism and certainly of Hindutvavadi, as if raising rightful demands of Hindus is a crime. In fact the famous ISRO scientist, Nambi Narayanan, who was wrongly accused of involvement in espionage but later exonerated, while asked about  his portrayal as a Hindu in his biopic ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’, exasperatedly said ‘Is it a crime to be a Hindu?’.

Why the cabal is against Modi & Hindu India? In this article carried in OpIndia on 17 July 2022 written by Dr Jadabeswar Bhattacharjee, the author very aptly explains and summarizes this phenomenon of intense hatred. He writes: It is the fear of rise of Hindu India, as a global power after 2014, that has disturbed the sleep of all these members of the cabal. Since 2014, India has refused to live with British colonial hangover, political pressure of USA, economic and territorial dictums of China and religious dominance of Islamist Ummah (India has second largest Muslim population). In the propaganda war against Modi and Hindu India, the members of Left-Liberal-Islamist cabal (Indian and international) are working overtime as foot soldiers of USA, China, Europe and Ummah.

For example, take the three bizarre articles published in the Hindu, a prominent member of this cabal, on the 18th July. On that day India covered 200 crores of vaccine doses (highest in the world by a wide margin), Yet the Hindu thought it absolutely necessary to sound despondent instead of celebrating India’s achievement. The Hindu also willfully misrepresented what Kishan Reddy had said about #HarGharTiranga program. It all reveal the ludicrous, ridiculous and hateful bent of mind the management of the Hindu publication has towards  anything to do with Hindutva   and by association the PM Modi and his govt.

Another very active member of the cabal is the social media giant, Twitter. While most of the filing by Elon Musk and the response by Twitter focused on Musk’s foremost reason to back out from the deal – Musk saying that Twitter failed to disclose the number of spam accounts and bots that infest Twitter – there was a portion where Elon Musk had also taken umbrage to the big-tech company picking a battle with the Indian government.

In this connection, to gauge the extent of hatred of this cabal, we may see how for the media and the activists tried to whitewash the Godhra carnage. The event was almost justified; which means that these men, women, and children  were deservedly  burnt simply because they were Hindus and because they chanted Jai Shree Ram. The propagandists tried their level best to paint the incident differently to save the murderous Muslim mob from facing any criticism from the public. In fact, if they had succeeded in their propaganda, India would have completely forgotten what had happened in Godhra on February 27, 2002.

Gujarat riots were the most fertile ground for NGOs and alleged human rights activists belonging to this cabal to get fame and money for themselves. This is amply borne out in recent Supreme Court observations on Teesta Setalvad.

This cabal must be fought politically. Unfortunately, most Hindus are apolitical and passive. So are its social groups. It is time,  all such people organize themselves and assert their rights to protect their tradition, heritage and much maligned identity.

The writer is a long- standing commentator on economic and political issues.

Commerce and Industry, Public Enterprises, Information Technology and Electronics and Parliamentary

Minister-in-Charge of Higher Education and School Education Department, West Bengal Government, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Public Enterprises, Information Technology and Electronics

Commerce and Industry, Information Technology and Electronics

Freebies in the garb of welfare-measures

0

The no-hold-barred freebie culture in India is halting the progress of the country undeniably. Before the election, in all states, one way or the other, the ruling and the opposition parties compete with one another in declaring freebies to people of all hues, not to the poor alone. These freebies range from free laptops, free T.V. sets, free cookers and grinders, free-water, free-electricity, sarees and other material gains as well as cash benefits.

The political parties show one-upmanship in this distribution game. The BJP, especially the Prime Minister Modi, is not much into this game as this freebie culture incurs wasting of money that has to go into infrastructure and nation building. In fact, before the recent March 2022- Uttar Pradesh elections, the Union Budget-2022 was presented. Everyone expected, since it (the budget) being a budget before the most populous and crucial state Uttar Pradesh’s election, some incentives/freebies would be announced to woo voters but that was not done. Yet, the BJP won the elections.

The proponents of freebies point out: when industrialists get loan write offs and Corporates get tax cuts, why can’t the poor get the benefit? No one says the poor should not get the benefit. Precisely that is the reason why still giving ration to the poor through fair-price shops (which is a Socialist welfare measure) even today exists in India. None raises questions on the subsidies given to the poor. None raises any question on the benefits that elevates the standards of life of the poor, be it on their education or health.

In India the government runs schools and hospitals for free of cost. All these remnants of Socialism are even now prevailing, as the Indian poor are not alleviated from hunger, dearth of good education and health. The opponents also show the accusing finger at the BJP for promoting a handful of business people and Corporates that have become wealthy in this regime. This is done specially by the Congress’ Rahul Gandhi. The same Corporate business classes were encouraged by the Congress also when it was in power.

The other opposition parties would also do the same, given the power. Without wealth creators in the society, social welfare schemes and social welfare measures cannot run. The government alone cannot create jobs. So, what the opposition parties yell and shout, is what they did when they were in power and would not mind doing again.

For most political parties’ social welfare is garb to garner votes. In the name of social welfare they greedily increase reservations beyond the bar set by the Supreme Court, they increase sops/subsidies given to various sections with no rhyme or reason other than grabbing votes. That way, they waste the tax-revenue collected from people for their personal gain.

Across the political spectrum this culture has grown. No one is there to ask for their accountability. Earlier, when this topic of freebies came up i.e. some political parties were asked to show how they get money for the promises they make in the form of balance sheets. They could not do it effectively. Later the topic fizzled out. By hook or crook, regional parties try to come to power in the states. So they make irresponsible promises. This culture of freebies is more in South India. Slowly but steadily it spread to the North Indian polity.

It was in 2004 assembly and parliamentary elections, held jointly in the united Andhra Pradesh, the then Pradesh Congress President Late Shri Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, (later became C.M. of A.P.) promised free-electricity to all farmers of the state, if he came to power. For, he wanted to dislodge the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) that was in the government for ten years.

Now, this fever of free-electricity supply to the farmers gripped North India. This is not to say that farmers should not be given this incentive. Farmers could be given at a subsidized price or for certain hours. By giving a totally unfettered power supply, it is said, they are letting loose water in their fields with no check on closing the pump-set. The wastage of water in the fields is humongous. Anything free is taken for granted. A small amount of price tag needs to be attached so as to have a check.

On a T.V. debate, Tamil Nadu’s finance minister, Palanivel Thiagarajan, when asked a question regarding freebies (Revdi culture), he queried in reverse— why the state governments should listen to the Union government when it has no constitutional authority? He brushed aside courts too in this matter. To him it should be left to political parties and the electorate. The electorate is by and large gullible to the parties’ politics.

If not to the Union government, at least all parties need to listen to the Supreme Court (presently the matter is in S.C.). The Apex Court is the best arbitrate in this regard, as the parties cannot judge among themselves what are considered freebies and what are considered welfare measures. Many educated sections are up against political parties doling out tax-payers’ money in an unregulated manner i.e. the populist way.

By supporting state’s hold on free- freebie-dispersal, the finance minister of Tamil Nadu, Shri Thiagarajan has been losing his argument as a well-educated person. By projecting dynasty and freebie politics to people, the Prime Minister Modi is getting the required heft. These potential issues work in his favor to fight the opposition with in 2024 elections to win.

The dangerous emerging trend: A time to rediscover our Indic identity

0

The Constitution of India of the people, by the people and for the people whose original preamble described it as “Sovereign Democratic Republic” to which the terms “Secular” and “Socialist” were later “passed by a Captive Parliament during The Emergency in the 42nd Amendment on 18th December 1976”, ensures to all citizens  Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. It envisages the general elevation in the character of the people and hence it becomes a mode of associated living, of conjoint communicated experience.

But under conditions prevailing now, instead of becoming a satisfying, affirmative alternative to man’s individual and collective progress, our present practicing democracy has become a means to reduce men to mediocrity in character and culture, to vulgarize man’s conception of life, their moral codes, manners and conduct and to endanger their legitimate rights.

The role of the opposition cannot be minimized in democracy. A strong opposition is an inevitable necessity in a functioning democracy. “In a democracy, the opposition is not only tolerated as constitutional, but must be maintained because it is indispensable.” The opposition has professed values, rights and duties cut out for them as watch dog to maintain the equilibrium of the democratic principles and good governance as much as that of the ruling government whose prime responsibility is towards perpetual implementation of good governance for the welfare of the people and to uphold the principles of democracy of Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity and to keep up the unity and integrity of the nation.

Unfortunately democracy being practiced as of now in our country as we see it, is nothing but a sham. If the opposition criticises for the sake of criticism is nothing but prejudice. If they find everything wrong in whatever the ruling government is doing, it amounts to deceit. If the actions of the opposition parties with divergent views and ideology working together for the sole aim of bringing down a democratically elected government with absolute majority, then it is not in the national interest.

All the political parties clamour for their fundamental rights particularly freedom of speech and freedom to protest, but they forget the fact that every right is derived out of a duty to be performed first and the most important duties are enshrined in the Constitution under Article 51-A on Fundamental Duties. All the political parties aspire for their rights to freedom of expression and freedom of action particularly demonstration and dharna without bothering about the inconveniences caused to the public which many times, by accident or by design, go out of control or deliberately kindled causing damages to public property and culminating in human losses.

How true when it is said, “An informed people is one of the best guarantees of a continuing democracy”? But how to make people be informed? Only through communication. The gift of speaking to one another on trust and understanding is the way for healthy democracy. Therefore, not only the ruling political dispensation but also the opponents require an effective communication channel and an open dialogue and indulge in constructive criticism and viable alternative suggestions. The aim and the objectives of the ruling party and its opponents in a democratic set up is to find ways and means to solve their differences through parliamentary debates and mutual discussions finding consensus where ever possible and demonstrate their protests through democratic peaceful means and not to indulge in violent activities to vent their feelings. “Skilful communication can increase stakeholders’ support for governance reform objectives, influencing opinion, attitude and behaviour change. Communication tools can also enhance citizen engagement in political systems. It is important to understand both communication processes and the framework for national dialogue in which these operate”

In these days of technological advancement in the field of communication and considering the importance and impact of the social media and its availability, the task of effective communication is not a problem at all. When the government interacts with people, it is imperative that they understand the power of their communication to impact those whom they are targeting. An effective communication leads to better understanding which then leads to acceptance.

Good governance of the state depends on leadership capacity and capability to deliver, accepts their responsibilities and finally acknowledge their accountability. In case of necessity and need, a course correction should be undertaken to achieve the goal. Constant and consistent communication with all stake holders will help creating good will and cooperation from all in the process of delivering good governance.

Communication cannot be a one way traffic. It must be two way traffic and up and down traffic. If it is done in the process level, it can promote support of governance reforms by creating political will in the leaders and policy makers, Organisational will among all level bureaucrats, induce public will among the citizens through influencing opinion, their attitude and necessary behavioral change to accept and implement the reforms. “At the structural level, communication links citizens, civil society, the media, and government, forming a framework for national dialogue through which informed public opinion is shaped”.

Communication is indeed the link that unite us with our fellow human beings. When it comes, it is like a miracle because it happens so rarely. It happened once and that was during our freedom struggle when we fought unitedly and in unison. Will that miracle happen now in our democracy? We don’t think so while experiencing democracy as of now. But why? It has become very difficult to communicate because the nature of communication that is being used by the various political parties ably aided by the fringe elements is based on division and fragmentation of the society on the basis of caste, creed, religion, language, regions, ideologies where saner voices are not being heard nor being felt.

Unfortunately the judicious, prudent and sensible law abiding and progressive thinking silent majority of the citizens stand helplessly as mute spectators to the deteriorating situation without raising their voice and not taking any counter action subjugating themselves on account of fear perpetuated by the radicals and extremists. The present day happenings have obliterated the oldest ancient Indic values, its culture, ethos and faith leading to a fear whether history is going to be repeated. But it should not be allowed to happen.

Those who are taking law into their hands should be dealt with sternly and firmly to show them their proper place and make them realise that such kind of violence and anti-constitutional activities cannot be and shall not be tolerated to protect national interest, national security and integrity of the nation at any cost.

Every country has its own culture, ethics and values which are to be preserved and propagated throughout History to create a distinctive identity of the respective country and their citizens which can be termed as their civilizational identity. Scanning the pages of history an interesting and an undeniable feature can be found that when all of the old civilizations came up and perished, the Indic Civilization which is the oldest of all the civilizations survived the test of time and is the oldest living civilization of the world based on the Hindu Dharmic concept of SANATHANA DHARMA, the oldest ancient wisdom and a way of life learned through the Hindu holy books of VEDAS, UPANISHADS, BHAGAVAD GITA and a host other holy Hindu SHASTRAS whose origins are not yet conclusively arrived at. But the Vedas are the oldest of all existing religious texts dating back nearly to 5000 years. This fact cannot be denied nor can it be erased.

India is a Heritage country. A conserted effort to preserve our heritage is a vital link to our cultural, educational and economic legacies – all of the things that quite literally makes us who we are”. We shall not hide our identity and  obliterate as to who we are. Our culture, our heritage, our identity, that’s what make us unique. It is our lineage that distinguishes us from others.

That raises the point as to what is the basis of our culture and civilizational identity. Can it be related to an alien identity or a mixed identity? No and not at all. The civilizational identity of India that is Bharat can only be related to the VEDAS, UPANISHADS, BHAGAVAD GITA and other HINDU Holy books. This identity cannot be manipulated and changed. It is well entrenched in our civilization. The greatness of our civilisation and its propagandists is that there is no single prophet as seen in Abrahamic religions of Christianity and Islam and there are no dogmas that preaches that their religion is the only religion worth practicing.

The Islamic “Shahadah: (Testimony of Faith) states, The first tenet, which is also the most important, is a declaration in which one verbally proclaims that Allah is the one and only true God and that Muhammad is God’s messenger. This declaration must be recited with conviction and sincerity. Only after this testimony of faith is publicly made can an individual be accepted as a member of the Islamic community.” Christianity also is monotheistic and preaches that through their beliefs only one can attain salvation.

But the only major non- monotheistic religion that accepts the universality and human brotherhood of all humanity which teaches “Lokah Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu” (May the entire universe ever be filled with peace, joy, love and light), Satyameva Jayate (Truth alone Triumphs), Vasudeva Kudumbakam (World of one family), āno bhadrāḥ kratavo yantu viśvato (Let noble thoughts come to us from all directions) and more such divine sermons for the welfare of humanity. In fact the various principles of Hinduism and SANATHANA DHARMA represent the purest form of SECULARISM AND FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

But when the fundamental foundation of Hinduism with its culture, ethics, values and ethos of our heritage nation are subverted, debauched and deliberately mocked and undermined in the name of secularism and freedom of speech, it leads to anarchism and vandalism making our nation vulnerable to outside sabotage and destabilization of our very existence by a certain section of vested interested people of our society with the connivance of outside powers who are interested and involved to keep our nation under perpetual chaos and conflicts.

The only hope that we can cherish is what history has taught us that when other ancient civilizations of the world perished, our Indic civilization stood firmly and survived the test of its times and we have to make our resolve that we will survive and triumph in all our endeavors to preserve our unity, integrity and national interest and so also our democracy keeping alive the idea of India that is Bharat with its glory, heritage, Indic cultural identity, Bharatiya ethos and values intact. The only way we can achieve the glory of our heritage status is through the rediscovering and restoration of our religious believes, culture, ethics, values and ethos of our heritage nation.

Last but not the least, an attempt should be made to initiate a reconciliation process to help and heal the country and bring about a reconciliation among the people of this nation by uncovering the truth about human sufferings of the people of India, that is Bharat, underwent during the period of Islamic invasions and British rule spanning over nearly thousand years by appointing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission so as to assuage the ill feelings and remove the mistrust prevailing between two major religious groups of India to pave the way for understanding and amity between them for peaceful co-existence ensuring progress and development of the nation and preserving the national integrity and security of this heritage nation.

JAI HIND-VANDE MATHARAM.
