Women’s political Participation in India: A pill to Feminists

0
WOMENS POLITICAL EMPOWERMENT
WOMEN POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN INDIA

Political participation of women in India is still under the clutch of complications and needs fair attention by upholding the identification of the real cause and just not making the issue an opportunity to spread the unjust approach under the doctrines of feminism.

In India, women just scream, for possessing the susceptible way to get into power or to occupy space in politics, like through several affirmative actions guaranteed under the Constitution and so they never prefer to choose a tough path of accomplishing hardships and struggle. In a few sections of our society women even, do not think about joining politics, but just to showcase a sedentary side of a patriarchal system & to drive the feminist agenda women’s organization demands the enactment of so-called ‘Women Reservation’ legislation in union parliament.

Presently, in the prevailing circumstances, the subject for discussion is whether ‘Indian women can be part of politics by bringing more favourable legislation or whether we need to put proper attention on the unscathed issues that are affecting the women’s representation in politics.

The approach of the women-based organisation constantly accuses the patriarchal mindset of men as responsible for the low representation of women in Indian politics, but on the contrary, it has been seen that in the 21st century there is a visible transition,  from the dominance of the men to the adoption of gender neutrality approach by the society in all the fields including politics.

The recent increase in women’s employment in several jobs sectors, which were earlier dominated by men, demonstrates that patriarchy is not the only reason responsible for the less enrollment of women in politics other factors contribute too and so, feminists need to shift their approach from patriarchy to those issues which are untouched even after several decades of independence.

All untouched issues are crucial and required immediate attention, then only our society will be able to improve the political participation of women.

Women in India are definitely, getting involved in the practical working of Indian politics but at a very depressed pace, in the lower house, women constitute 12.6% of total members and in the upper house, they constitute 11.5% of total members-only, criticizing the man’s misogynist behaviour is not just responsible for their less involvement, rather then we need to concentrate on the other important aspects accountable for slighter participation of women in politics like:

(1) Lack of Political Skills–
Most women are unable to participate in politics because they don’t possess adequate knowledge of the same. States like Uttar Pradesh present alarming figures that around 85000 women are unable to vote in each constituency as they aren’t registered as voters. Most of the women in the country don’t know how politics work, and how the institutions govern the people and themselves.

(2) Lack of Political knowledge–
Politics is just not a way to just discharge welfare for people but it comes with more responsibility to look over global affairs in terms of our country and to make the legislature which needs a level of understanding of distinct issues.

(3) Absence of Women Based political parties–
Women just cry to get an equal proportion of representation in the political parties but no women in India dared to establish an independent political party that will look exclusively look over the interest of women. Inspiration can be taken from Finland’s political parties we’re 5 different political parties headed by women politicians who formed the coalition government in Finland which gave the world the youngest female Prime Minister.

(4) Indian  socio-religious factors —
Even our religious practices are reflective of our male-dominated political system. Politics are supposed to be a male-dominated area and women are not supposed to participate in state affairs. The word Politics draws its roots from the Greek word polity, which has often been presented as a male-dominated affair or gathering.

(5) Women lack without man’s support–
As we have seen after the implementation of the 73rd and 74th amendment act in 1994, women got 33 per cent of reservations at a lower level of administration but how this was miss-used we all noted that how on behalf of elected women representative was ruled by there husband call this reflected the incompetence of women in holding and exercising powers, so just don’t demand power learn how to use those power.

(6) Women are self-obsessed with safety issues–
Women, most of the time, don’t feel safe working outside because of safety issues. Most of the news that we hear, regarding the alarming number of rape, and ve-teasing cases, makes the women feel unsafe to work outside.

(7) Women are willing to make a balance between family and politics–
Women in India are more inclusive to obeying the family arrangement by performing the associated tasks and obligations which mostly became the reason for limited attention to outside affairs to conceal their deficiency they barely blame the man for all this

(8)  Women in India primarily Lack financial resources–
The most important reason which I found for their less visibility in politics is that economic constraints to sustain the Indian political people must be economically sound, I know many of you will not agree by stating many examples but by considering those as an exception, I can say this because this a hard reality for both genders.

Therefore, as a Democratic society, we need to focus on delivering the objective of equal representation of every section of our society and when it comes to women our society had shifted its vision and approach so that women can get uplifted, but it is not possible that only legislative backing can bring the change, it is the duty of entire society to identify all such reasons responsible for the oppression and by collective action, effective change can be achieved.

Adopting the women’s reservation can’t fulfil the objective of women’s empowerment instead of that we need to focus on the other aspects which are the fundamental obstacle to political empowerment, subsequently, we also need to change the feminist mindset that only targets the mentality of the man and ignores other factors, after working on all identified reasons, women’s political development is possible until then we can’t do much for women.

India @75

“Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.”

This is an excerpt of the “Tryst with destiny” speech delivered by Jawaharlal Nehru. These words marked the dawn of a new era in Indian history. After 200 years of oppression and slavery, India had spread its wings to fly high.

At the end of the fifteenth century, some merchants from distant lands of Europe came to India in search of the “golden bird”. We thought that they would extend a hand of friendship. But by deceit and treachery, they made us their slaves. British Empire took about 45 Trillion Dollars from India back home in 200 years.

Apart from monetary loss, India paid a human cost to its colonizers. Scars of the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre, the great Bengal famine, and Indian lives lost in both world wars are still felt. India fought a long way against the British from the Battle of Plassey in 1757, till the Quit India movement in 1942.

Hard times create good men. India’s quest for freedom was led by pioneers like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmibai, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel among others. They fought for the Swaraj (Self-rule) of their motherland.

India finally broke out of its shackles in 1947. But this freedom brought with it the calamity of partition. Brothers became thirsty for each other’s blood. Till yesterday those who stood shoulder to shoulder against the British, today were killing each other. On that day the soul of Mother India would also have cried, seeing her lap being divided.

This is the law of nature. Sun rises after the dark night. India’s night was 200 years long. India’s sun also dawned after a long era of darkness. Since then, India is striving towards making a better society for its citizens. Even after Independence, a lot of challenges were faced by the new republic. Healing wounds of partition, integration of princely states, reorganization of internal boundaries, defending the sovereignty of the republic, and at the same time ensuring the well-being and development of the masses.

Each and every challenge was taken with the same spirit by the people of the country. Today, we are standing in 2022. It’s the 75th eve of Indian Independence. India has witnessed one of the most unique experiences of nation-building in the world. Today when we are celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, it is important to owe our independence to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the liberty of this soil.

Today India is the fifth largest economy, the largest democracy, the second largest military, and a nation of 1.3 billion strong. Hope and development are the largest religions of India.

What makes this nation great? Despite being divided based on regions, languages, religions, and cultures, the heart of each and every Indian beat with the same sound resounding – India.

“In a gentle way, you can shake the world.”

– Mahatma Gandhi

Let us abuse Modi some more

0

When Modi was re-elected in 2019, everyone thought that it was the end of opposition in India. Fake liberals and closeted corrupts had thronged the television and youtube channels to show their grave concern for the survival of democracy in India. Those voices grew louder when Modi, boosted by the presence of Amit Shah by his side, spent the first 6 months after the 2019 victory to complete the major Hindutva agendas whether it was the construction of Ram Mandir or abrogation of Article 370 or CAA-NRC. Even the ardent supporters of Modi felt a sense of pity for those deranged voices, with him moving forward at the speed of bullet train.

Then something changed. In fact, a lot changed. The next 2 years were spent firefighting whether against once in a century pandemic which had destroyed the countries with the best of healthcare or the anarchy in the name of protests against CAA and farm laws. Despite these mega challenges, Modi was still being considered infallible. Then came Bengal elections, or rather the post poll violence which saw the murder of hundreds of Hindus and migration of thousands in fear (first such major intra country migration after the migration of Kashmiri Pandits three decades back). Modi supporters were coming to terms with this realization that Modi is human after all (and thus not infallible), that he gave his supporters one more shock by taking back the farm laws after almost an year they were passed.

With criticism rising for the “Hindu Hriday Samrat” so much so that the title seemed to have been shifted to other leaders like Yogi Adityanath or Himanta Biswa Sharma, by many. This shift has only increased since then with the latest spree of “Sar Tan se Juda” killings by the Islamists all over India which have been preluded by the attacks on Hindu festivals, shaming of Hindu sentiments over Gyanvapi Shivling issue, and Nupur Sharma episode. One can see the growing criticism for Modi, not by the Islamist leftist gang, but by the avid Hindutvawadis who have been raising their voices for Hindu lives and culture.

If you only go by twitter and some youtube channels, you could be forgiven for believing that a person who was once hailed as the solution for all the Hindu problems has become the biggest roadblock in realizing a Hindu Rashtra. And I will not demean those voices by saying that all the criticism is unwarranted or driven by those with ulterior motives. So the question arises what has changed in the last 12-15 months? The answer is Hindus have finally woken up from their fake slumber (the kind of sleep when you have your eyes closed while not actually sleeping). I can literally hear those voices attacking me how can I say so when Hindus are being beheaded just for the mere cause of condemning the threats of rapes and death to Nupur Sharma.

I say so because when was the last time you had seen the kind of mega rallies in support of Nupur Sharma all over India comprising of common Hindu and not just political members. When was the last time you had seen the outrage over the killings of poor Hindu men so much so that even the leftists were forced to take cognizance and Islamists were forced to de-escalate the situation! When was the last time you had seen such open defiance of the Islamists’ threats by doubling down on the controversial statements by people from all strata of society. When was the last time you had seen an Indian government being brought down in the name of Hindutva; till now we had only seen governments being formed to keep the ‘communal’ forces away or governments being brought down to preserve ‘secularism’.

Critics would say how does it all matter when the common Hindu is living in fear and being killed on a daily basis. You would be right in saying so. But tell me honestly, did you really think that this fight was going to be as easy as voting a single person to power? Try and remember what the Hindus were dealing with back in 2014? An ignorant population which was getting more and more westernized day by day.

This country had been thrown to the wolves but the Hindus were more concerned about their children’s English speaking ability. Look at the system the man you elected in 2014 & 2019 has been up against. We have an opposition which is openly anti-Nationalist and used to hobnob with the terrorists when in power to falsely implicate the Hindus. We have a big section of influential civil society who hate Hindus to the core and openly whitewash the crimes of Islamists and their agenda. We have a media which has connections in the foreign countries and would not blink twice before selling their own country for some money and kickbacks.

We have a legal system whose highest court is openly biased to such an extent that not only the Islamists and terrorists get priority hearing and special treatment but even the same cases get two different verdicts just because the plaintiff is a Hindu in one case and is a Muslim in the other. And despite all this, the narrative that is being propagated even from some of the highest posts is that of Hindu intolerance and Majoritarianism.

You can be excused for not knowing the level of corruption and malice in the entire democratic system back in 2014 but now you do. We are on a warpath to change the entire democratic machinery and not just to do mere cosmetic changes which can be reverted as soon as the other side is in power. It is going to take time. You might be right in asking for a new leader to lead you in this battle but tell me honestly who created those leaders that you want to replace Modi with? When was the last time you saw a bunch of promising leaders you can bank upon for decades to come whether it be Amit Shah, Yogi Adityanath, Himanta Biswa Sharma, K Annamalai, Devendra Fadnavis, Tejasvi Surya, to name a few. Did any past leadership in BJP allowed these many leaders to grow?

Most of the Hindus were living in ignorance back in 2014, those who were aware were left helpless by the apathetic attitude of their fellow countrymen and were fighting a lost battle having been stamped with the term Hindu fanatics by the very system they were up against. We should have no hesitation in accepting that it was Modi who has brought this oldest civilization from the brink of existential crisis to the stage where it has a fair chance to fight and win. If not for him, people like me and millions of others would have spent their entire existence in the throes of ‘Nehruvian Secularism’ without even getting a chance to know about our actual history. If we can boast of a system which can fight this Islamist Leftist Virus today then we have only one man to thank it for.

And what qualms do we have from Narendra Modi? He has not till now in 8 years has taken a single misstep where we can accuse him of being another politician using Hindus only for votes and power. We can accuse him for not doing enough or for moving slow but can we think of a single instance where he has damaged the cause of Hindutva? He can be criticized for his silence on major atrocities against Hindus like that in Bengal and ‘Sar tan se Juda’ killings but has he deviated from the path of Hindu renaissance ever? The fact we need to understand is that the damage of 1000s of years cannot be rolled back in a few years. He is slowly breaking the boundaries of caste, region, community – a pre-requisite to Hindu unity and thus Hindu civilizational revival.

There are umpteen number of vultures from the older system who are waiting breathlessly for him to make even a slight mistake to derail this entire project. So excuse him for being extra cautious as he (as well as we all know) knows in his heart that this chance has come after more than a millennium and we just cannot afford to let it slip away just because we want this civilizational war to end fast and reap its benefits for ourselves. We are not fighting this battle for us but for our children and grandchildren and their future.

In conclusion, I want to remind every fellow voice who has Kesari blood running in their veins that we cannot win the battle against Evil by asking our leaders to become more evil. Remember Ravana cannot be defeated by becoming Ravana but by becoming RAM. So do not ask your leader to slaughter every Islamist or leftist who you rightfully disagree with or even have hate in your heart for. We cannot revive the Hindu Civilization if we ourselves got deviated from the path of DHARMA. Criticize the man all you want, ask him as many difficult questions as possible but one, do not abandon him midway and second, do not ask him to become more evil; for that is not the kind of leader this Sanatana Dharma would be proud of.

Fight against corruption and political martyrdom

There have been high-voltage concerns and chorus of disapprovals in India and in the Western media over raids against politicians and their interrogations including that of Congress first family cum owner Gandhi dynasty/family members such as Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi over issue of money launderings and corruptions. Earlier Gandhi’s or as many have started saying Congress’s in-law Robert Vadra was also treated in the same way by the Government of India’s investigative agencies over the issue of corruption and land grab, and has been charge-sheeted.

All these started post-GE2014 in which Congress Party was badly defeated as the same won just 44 numbers of MPs, the worst kind of result the Congress Party had ever experienced. The same result was repeated in GE2019 in country’s first-past-the-post voting in practice since independence and as per the constitutional mandate with further decrease of overall fall in vote percentage though the Congress Party won marginally higher number of MPs but much less in number to even cobble up a 2004 or 2009 kind coalitions with like-minded and tainted dynasty owned parties to take oath of office at Raisina Hill.

Over the issue of raids on the party’s first family managed/owned properties and interrogations of their supreme leaders by Enforcement Directorate (ED) over allegations of corruptions/money launderings, people of eminence write and talk among others: ED saves Gandhi in Congress power game. Not every hero is a martyr, but every martyr is a hero. The party first family must be hoping for their martyrdom at the hands of the Enforcement Directorate as key members of the family targeted giving them hero status. They give example of Indira Gandhi’s arrest, who was targeted by the first non-Congress party government in late 1970s for her undemocratic adventures during her imposed draconian Emergency, which unleashed the family’s inner martyrdom.

As now her grandchildren jump the barricades and wag fingers at those in power, which are getting disproportionate high visibility on the prime time TV, will these acts convert to votes like their grandmother got in 1980? Indeed, this is a billion dollar question. Gandhi’s high publicity visit to ED office -unlike Modi’s visit to SIT office alone and without publicity- for several days once again enhanced the recall value of the Congress as the principal opposition party. The result, the Gandhi brand, which is on the spree of eminent decline, has turned out to be beneficiaries of current probe.

In nutshell, among the eminent writers and commentators, some are happy and some are unhappy over the relentless ED interrogations with backing of judiciary. Recently, the Supreme Court in its verdict upheld the provisions in PMLA 2002 the act that empowered the ED but challenged by opposition parties who propagate that they are victims of ruling party’s vendetta politics.

Now, let us discuss the Indira Gandhi’s so-called political martyrdom in late 1970s. Many argue that unsustainable actions against Indira during electorally mandated but incomplete tenure of first non-Congress experiment in independent India was the single major reason of her return to power within three years of her and Congress Party’s electoral eviction from power. But, this author refuses to accede to above argument for reasons such as:

1. The then ruling party, though was seen on the surface a single entity and formed the government accordingly; internally, there was no ideological convergence as that was an amalgamation of many political parties from diverse backgrounds such as Socialists, Centre-Left, Centre-Right, etc. who had joined hands hurriedly to remove dictatorial Indira-Sanjay regime from power and save the country’s democracy, resulted conflicts over policy formulation and lack of united face of governance. Apart from the above, some prominent ministers in the government found them losing their ideological bases they had assiduously cultivated over decades of struggles at grassroots level, one of the major reasons of fall of Janata Government.

And the other reason being: 2. The selection of leader to head the government as Prime Minister was not based on his popularity or votes he had garnered for the new party and the loyalty of MPs he had, but based on experience of politician with ministerial experience during previous government, the kind of mistake taken place in 1947 when Sardar Ballavbai Patel’s electoral win was overlooked.

Note: All politicians are not of Sardar Patel essence. Patel’s only concern was nation building, and thus he acceded to Mahatma Gandhi’s undemocratic imposition of Nehru as PM instead of be part of power fight with power hungry Nehru during early days of independence. It may be assumed that the great Patel might have accepted Gandhi decision with objective to show the world and the former British PM Winston Churchill, who had already branded Indian leaderships as a bunch of rascals and opined that they could not rule themselves united, that the newly independent country’s leaders were different.

Despite betrayal of democratic verdict under the watch of the Father of Nation, early independent India’s government survived from possible power-fight as seen in several newly independent countries around the world those days and in late 1970s during Janata regime on the foundation laid by Sardar Patel. Early fall of Janata experiment is prime reason of Indira return to power in 1980 as she had successful conveyed the message that nation needed a strong leader which her family dynasty only could offer, and non-Congress leaders and parties were just power hungry politicians and outfits respectively.

Her earlier careful cultivation of her and her family centric hero-worship worked handy in her return to power. But her and her family dynasty centric domination did not work in 1989, and it was the Indira-Rajiv Government’s subsequent decade-long widespread corruption that caused Rajiv Gandhi and Gandhi dynasty falls from power in 1989. Here, I would like to mention that had Indira not assassinated by her own security guards in 1984 and following which her son not created an euphoria of ‘votes for orphan’, the subsequent General Election would have given a different verdict not matching with GE1980 as people by then had started distasting their foolishness in supporting corruption tainted dynasty politics in New Delhi.

Now, the mute question is: Should the government abandon the ‘crusade against political corruption’ for ‘political correctness’ which may lead to ‘validation of political corruption’ and makes ‘political corruption’ ‘integral part of nation’s politics’? It should not be. Therefore, one more question arises, and that is, ‘Who can lead this movement’? Certainly, that man is he who has proved that corruption stink can’t touch his skin, and has no dynasty inclination and not a product of contaminated political dynasty.

Here, it is needed to write that the above analysis clearly tells the people want a government in New Delhi who has a ‘clean image’ and ‘strong leadership/governance skills’, and subsequently the same be simulated in state capitals. The apprehension that Indira Gandhi’s so-called martyrdom in late 1970s getting copied by her grandchildren to get back the governance of the country may not be feasible in 2020s as political environment in India has gone through a lot of political changes on the eve of the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahostav, and the water of the river Narmada -instead of getting wasted in Arabian Sea- irrigates the farm lands in distance Kutch desert despite several decades of Western illegally funded of opposition by the so-called environmentalists who lead  agitations for both water shortage for farming and submerge of forest land in dam area. Therefore, the drive against corruptions, which taxed India’s economic development for decades and poisoned India’s political sanctity at every level, should be encouraged by people of reputes and substances.

Brahmin- The caste of evils

0

This heading itself is enough to make several people happy. This is an all-time favorite- earthquake, corona, election, or wartime — A few demeaning articles and tweets on Brahmins always delight people.

Since the time my first memories start, I remember epithets such as “fraudulent”, “ abuser”, “pakhandi” used as synonyms for “Brahmins”.

The mental conditioning was such that we thought all of this is Okay and well deserved. The media and movies have trained our minds in such a way that the word Brahmin evokes images of a fraudulent, lecherous person abusing lower cast humans and cheating people.

As per the Joshua report, Brahmins make up 4.5% of the total population. Does the 4.5% Brahmin population really represent a gang of cheaters and fraudulent devils? In fact, many of these Brahmins are living in poverty and they can’t avail any government benefits too; like reservations in jobs, admission in schools because of their caste. In India, poverty is tied to caste. Any upper caste person can’t avail government benefits due to their birth in upper castes.

This continuous brahmin bashing, forced me to think one day — I am born in a Brahmin family; should I feel ashamed and guilty? If I scan the previous two generations of my family — my grandparents (born in the late 1800s and early 1900s) and my parents (born in the pre-independence era) — none of them have done any “pakhand”. They were hard-working honest people who taught us the values of honesty.

Then I thought of my dad’s Brahmin friends and acquaintances whom we referred to as uncles — Dwivedi uncle, Banerjee uncle, Sharma uncle to find out if they have done any evil. Here also I did not get any success.

Then I started to scan the geography of India that I have visited — west, east, north, south. I thought about my Brahmin landlord and his wife in Chennai — “Mr. and Mrs. Sundararajan”, “Banerjee’s” of Calcutta, all the “Kar’s, Kale’s , Gore’s, in Maharashtra ” that I have encountered. To my realization — I don’t remember witnessing any abnormal evil in them.

Untouchability should have started for hygienic reasons which later became a tool for oppression. It took a while but, Brahmins identified it as an evil and were the first to initiate its end. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Dayanand Saraswati, Raja Rammohan Roy, or Veer Sawarkar — all Brahmins advocated ending the untouchability.

A child never chooses his or her birth. Even before a child learns to speak he learns media hate towards Brahmins. How is he supposed to join the dots? He is clueless. It will be so much better if you name and shame the people who do pakhand instead of attributing “pakhand” as a property of the brahmin community. It is as bad as punishing Muslims for the evils of Aurengzeb or labeling all Muslims as terrorists.

Brahmins have contributed a lot to this world. Be it literature, music, dance, medicine, math, science, social structure, politics, economics, law and order, philosophy, or spirituality — The contribution of Brahmins is unlimited starting from the Vedic era.

The first historical evidence of united India is also courtesy of a Brahmin — Chanakya.

Shivaji’s Guru — Samarth Ramdas was a Brahmin.

The first war of Independence was triggered by Mangal Pandey and led by Lakshmi Bai, Tatya Tope — all Brahmins.

Even Gandhiji went to South Africa on the advice of a Brahmin. Gandhiji writes in his book -” My experiments with truth”- Our learned Brahmin family friend and advisor advised me to go to South Africa and study law instead of becoming a doctor.

In those days traveling the seas was prohibited, so Gandhiji went against the fierce opposition from his community and traveled the sea. Had he not gone to South Africa, there would have been no Satyaghra nor Independence of India.

Ambedkar’s Brahmin teacher gave him his name and allowed him in school. A brahmin women doctor married him. This deserves mention as well.

Poor lower caste people’s situation must be improved, they should be given justice but that does not mean one has to take revenge on Brahmins for something they did 200 years ago. No child chooses his birth. Let’s not hate him for being born into a Brahmin family or put him to shame and make him feel guilty. He should not.

One must question and rebel against the social evil and condemn it but, it is not right to demonize the entire community and make them synonymous with evil.

The lower cast people have been empowered by the reservation system and their empowerment should also be celebrated. Brahmins and all upper caste people have asked for forgiveness. It is time to forgive them and look ahead. Brahmins deserve acknowledgment for all the positives they have given to the world. They should be given their due of thanks.

5th August is the Day.

There is more to what is written, will tell at right time not now

Some lives matter, some Don’t

Everyone can recall the international cricketing community being forced to bend their knee for Black Lives Matter. An American movement that claims to speak for the rights of the black community which went roaring up after the “George Floyd police brutality case” in 2020. Seldom the supporters of this movement talk of the violence it caused in USA over the years. Anyways our focus is on our people, our cricket team. Every player across the international cricketing Community followed the protocol obediently but one, Quinton de Kock. He was the only one who resisted politics being shoved down people’s throat as some justice movement. And even he was later forced to bend knee for it.

But let”s put our focus back to the Indian Team. Is Black Lives Matter related to India? Does it have anything to do with our issues? Do we lack our own issues, so we resort to focus on western issues?

From here let’s jump to the Shami incident. Let me jog it down your memory lane. When India lost to Pakistan in T-20 WC last year. Shami was attacked online, over his religion. Especially on twitter. Later it was found out that a lot of the attacks were orchestrated by Pakistan to dent India”s image as a nation. And to sing in unison with the “India is getting intolerant” narrative which is a mere political notion and not the ground reality.

Now Virat Kohli the next day jumped up and defended Shami like he should have and said “Targeting someone over their religion is the lowest a human can fall”. True Virat, it’s very True. But only if you were a bit more consistent, people could have actually respected you.

Remember Virat, just two months before this India-Pak match something was taking place right across our borders. Some people were being targeted over their religion. Remember? It was Bangladesh. Where Hindus were being lynched and killed, Idols of Durga Maa were being desecrated by a radical Islamist front Jamaat-e-Islami. Hindus of Bangladesh spent their Durga Puja in pain and grief, in fear and despair.

Where were you, Virat? Or where were all the virtue signaling cricketers and celebs who come up with ” No to firecracker ” agendas on Diwali, and ” Save Water” propagandas on Holi. Who can bend their knee for Black Lives Matter, but can’t lend out even one word for the horrible lives our fellow co-religionists have to live right across borders because of Extremism.

And don’t for a moment think this silence comes with zero repercussions. According to a report done by a Bangladeshi professor, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh in the next 30 years. Yes, you heard me right. It talks about the ever shrinking population of Hindus in Bangladesh, mostly due to Islamic extremism. Hindu population was 28% during the 1940s and today it’s below 9%.

Constant attacks from radical Islamists have either forced the Hindus to convert, to leave Bangladesh and settle abroad or even die. Sounds like a ” Raliv, Galiv, Chaliv ” moment doesn”t it? It hasn”t reached that level yet, but the extremism against Hindus is increasing in Bangladesh day by day and if we stay silent, like our Cricketers and Bollywood Celebs and say nothing against this slow genocide of our fellow Bangladeshi Hindus then it might one day end up in that.

Because remember once a wise man said, ” For evil to win, it takes good men to do nothing”. Decide today who you want to be. A silent watcher or a vocal activist who wants to save lives and the quality of lives of people who have no real voice, for whom international community is deaf, for whom speaking out isn”t as cool as going to a UNICEF camp, for whom even Indian govt is silent at times because it disturbs the relations between the two nations and also shows how ineffective Indian govt can be at influencing her neighbours and how incompetent Indian govt can be in forcing their neighbours to treat their minorities better.

Remember, no one took the rising extremism seriously enough in the 80s and then “The Kashmiri Pandit Genocide” took place. Let’s not make more Kashmirs, and hope lives of people can be better all across, despite religion, despite creed, ethnicity or class. All lives shall matter equally in the eyes of all humans. Peace.

Opposition withers, whither BJP?

The country is shocked to see the way some key opposition parties are virtually melting under the heat of corruption investigations pursued by the agencies ED and CBI. The MVA govt in Maharashtra has already collapsed, AAP in Delhi is tottering after Satyendra Jain arrest, TMC in West Bengal is facing gravest crisis of credibility in the wake of Partha Chatterjee’s arrest in connection with teachers recruitment scam.

Further, the two top leaders of Indian National Congress are facing very tough charges in National Herald case and this has potentially debilitating impact on 3 states ruled by the party singly or in coalition. Then there are reports against chief ministers of Kerala in connection with gold smuggling and Jharkhand relating to alleged mining scam. In a nutshell four major opposition parties -INC, NCP, TMC and AAP seem to be on back foot in recent time.

There were always apprehension about corruption in political system in the country. But probably few had doubted the rot has been so deep and the opposition space has been so fragile. Does that leave BJP an empty field to score easy goals in 2024?

Though the opposition parties are alleging selective misuse of central agencies and also corruption by BJP, these are vague, non-specific and therefore politically non-issues. Therefore BJP seems to be the only major party that has, by and large, remained unscathed so far. Does that mean BJP will have a easy smooth win in 2024 LS polls?

BJP and NDA have a clear edge over rivals on the issue of governance and corruption free image. However, some important challenges are brewing within the party and so far it does not seem to be cognizant of them. These can snowball into major issues unless recognized and tackled well ahead of 2024. Of them, let us examine three.

First, across the world, for any ruling political party, the key to sustainable hold over power rests in its organizational strength and grip over the political executives who  head ministries. It needs to have the capacity to ensure that the government machineries sincerely carry out the principles and programmes it has promised to its voters. The apex level of the party cannot be sub-servient to its members running the government but has to keep a healthy check over the latter.

Over past few decades successive party presidents whether M M Joshi, LK Advani, Kushabhai Thakre, Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkadi, Rajnath Singh or Amit Shah performed that role effectively and authoritatively over central or state governments run by the party. But many political analysts feel there has been a departure from that tradition over last one year or so. A new trend has been in evidence of the present party president often seeking directions from the top level political executives, especially the prime minister and home minister even for organizational matters which must fall within his own authority and domain.

This has a historical background. Present party president JP Nadda was chosen as the ‘working president’ in June 2019 and was virtually mentored by his illustrious predecessor Amit Shah for over six months. Amit Shah became the home minister in the same month and could not hold both positions as per BJP’s constitution. Nadda finally took over as president in January 2020. However, the dependence seems to have continued.

Such practice may give a pyrrhic glamour of power to the party president, but works counter to the long term interest of the party.

Why? What are the implications?

This new practice is depriving the government of useful checks and guidance from the party machinery. On the other hand, it takes away extremely valuable time from the top political executives, especially the home minister, who has scores of important tasks to carry out in a short time frame. Notably, the NDA government has less than two years before it completes its present tenure. Meanwhile, party’s core voters expect the present government to implement CAA, take the repeal of Article 370 & 35A to their logical conclusion including resettlement of Kashmiri Pandits, take concrete steps in the matter of population control, UCC, religious conversion, police reforms, temple decontrol and other critical issues. But as the home minister Shah remains extensively occupied with every important party’s organizational decision whether strategizing election campaigns, cabinet formation or expansion (like in Maharashtra or Karnataka or other states), handling intra-party conflict in West Bengal, and numerous such others, there is hardly time for him to address scores of important issues stated earlier.

Second, BJP seems to be interpreting couple of important political developments unrealistically and worse, devising strategies based on the same. The most important example relates to its unexpected success in Azamgarh and Rampur bye elections where Muslims form significant part of electorate. The party has seemingly interpreted it as a shift of Muslim voters towards itself because of its series of pro-minority measures such as inclusion in OBC quota, largescale scholarship, residential coaching programme for civil services examination,  five new universities primarily to cater to minority community students, and so on. The twin by-elections win had seemingly excited the July 2022 deliberations in its  National Executive meet in Bhagyanagar (Hyderabad) and corroborated this line of thinking and interpretation that the party feel will gain more minority votes if more doles are made available to the concerned community. In this connection PM Modi’s ‘triptikaran’ doctrine looked significant to political observers.

But that is an inaccurate explanation of the party’s by-election success. Further, it conceals the more plausible reasons for the unprecedented victory. Wrong interpretation of electoral success and wrong strategy built upon it can do grave harm to the party in 2024.

What are then the most likely reasons for party’s emphatic victory in these two LS constituencies in UP? To any discerning observers, they are (a) hugely improved law and order; (b) reduction in corruption in public offices; and (c) implementation of government’s welfare schemes across caste and creed without discrimination. It is axiomatic that the vast numbers of poor people across caste and creed divide always become the biggest beneficiaries of these three cannons of governance. Their gratitude has reflected in vote box.

For nearly seven decades, the poor Muslim voters have been exploited in the name of religion by various parties. For the first time they have understood that their interest is best protected not by religious fundamentalism and empty promises but by quality of governance. They voted accordingly. Though to the uninitiated this explanation may sound counter intuitive, the key to beginning of a shift in Muslim votes, if it is fact, has most likely been due to the Yogi model of governance, which in turn embodies the values of Indic civilization. It will be a great folly for BJP top leadership to undermine this factor and attempt to innovate newer methods of appeasement for the minority community.

There is likely to be a massive counter-impact of how BJP handles this issue upon its core constituency of voters which is the vast religious majority community. They were oppressed for centuries under foreign rule on the sole ground of religion. They want an early end to any kind of discrimination in government policies going forward. Unlike Sachchar Commitee for Muslims, there has not been any Commission to bring forth the story of distress and miseries of the majority community as a whole.

Mandal Committee touched only one layer and that unfurled a disconcerting picture of deprivation of very large number of people of majority community who were classified as ‘OBC’. But there are several other groups in majority community considered as ‘upper castes’ who have been discriminated against. They suffered economically including in matters of education and job opportunities since independence. Intermittent movements by some communities such as Jat, Gujjar, Patidar Patel, who are varyingly considered as ‘upper caste’ and ‘OBC’ by various states bear testimony to this fact.

On the whole the majority community want the government policies to be fair and non-discriminative. They want the party they vote for should implement that . They connect naturally to BJP’s planks like ‘Justice for All, Appeasement to None’ and ‘Development for All’. These gel very well with policies such as ‘strict law and order’, and ‘zero tolerance for corruption’. In their perception all of the above together ensure all round and integrated development of all communities.

If social media responses are anything to go by, the growingly politically aware section of the majority community are showing their reservations to BJP’s new slogans like ‘sabka viswas’ and ‘triptikaran’.  The party therefore needs to be cognitive of concerns of its core constituency as well. Their support is essential in 2024 polls as well and that cannot be taken for granted.

Little elaboration may be useful.

Factually, winning election is about vote. It is a matter of disquiet that demography is changing gradually in several parts of the country due to proliferation of  Illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. To add to it the success of some parties in misleading religious minorities cast vote en bloc against BJP on communal consideration have been impacting poll results. Due to passive approach by BJP with regard to issues such as NRC and CAA, this threat is snowballing. Its impact become consequential because the majority community has been traditionally lax in casting their votes.

BJP must have seen how such dynamic had swept them in Delhi state elections twice in a row. Nothing, including the proverbial Modi charisma, could save it from two successive humiliating defeats. There is a danger that the Delhi template may be used on wider scale across the country in 2024. The only safeguard against it is to motivate BJP’s core constituency voters to come out and vote in large numbers. Even their indifference can cost the party, let alone displeasure or frustration. That can be fatal!

Third, the party’s incorrigible tendency to repeat mistakes seems to continue. It still shows a propensity to bring in leaders from rival parties rather than grooming and giving responsibilities to party insiders. This strategy had badly backfired in West Bengal but  re-tried unsuccessfully in Uttarakhand and UP state elections. In the latter state also it, damaged, party’s prospect in the poll and now posing threat to harmonious working of the cabinet. Worryingly, the party appears to be unconcerned. The cases of Goa and   Jharkhand are most recent examples.

All of these however constitute genuine concerns of the party’s core constituency. But it seems to be ignoring them in quest of extremely uncertain gains. The party seems to be in a hurry to expand rapidly disregarding these issues. BJP need to realize these will become important handicaps in 2024 unless tackled urgently. The fact that the opposition is quickly falling apart raises risks for ignoring them and pursuing reckless policies and strategies.

Therefore, in the present times with the opposition in disarray the road to 2024 may appear easy and straightforward to BJP, but great circumspection and caution are called for on its part. The party must not swim with the political executives, but think independently and guide them in statesman like manner.
