JDS-Congress government in Karnataka worse than emergency, black hole of democracy

0

The bottomless greed for power, obsession and lust to protect the government and jettison democracy at any cost shown by JDS-Congress coalition government in Karnataka after knowing fully well that the coalition does not have the majority and it cannot muster majority has proven to be a disaster to the state of Karnataka, worse than emergency and is indeed a black hole of democracy. By blaming BJP or alleging a value of Rs.1000 crore mission is on to destabilize the coalition government are not going to cut much ice in Indian politics.

Ever since the government was formed by both JDS and Congress party, the unwritten agreement was that how to make the Karnataka state an ATM. Therefore governance had not happened since then and only feud between JDS and congress party was happening almost every day may be due to some arithmetic error in sharing the profit.  As a result, the Karnataka Chief Minister has become a weeping child in Indian politics, tried to earn as much sympathy as possible through expression of his tears, tried to denigrate congress party to masque his mal-governance and unstoppable corruption.

The beautiful state of Karnataka has witnessed several such political upheavals in the past but never has undergone the worst phase like what the state is enduring today thanks to JDS-Congress coalition.

When the grandmother of congress dynast and the then prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi clamped emergency, she mutilated, blinded, muted and deafen democracy and the voice of people, caged judiciary and press, imprisoned all dissent and the rule of tyranny was the real emperor of India during emergency. Today the JDS-Congress government in Karnataka in the name of debate on motion on vote of confidence is delaying the floor test, trying all tricks in the book to engage in horse trade and subvert democracy. The debate on vote of confidence and horse trade has overtaken governance and the state is yawning for a government. Unfortunately congress and JDS are creating black hole of democracy by devaluing all political ethics and etiquettes to remain in power.

The majority deficit of JDS-Congress coalition is not small as the independent legislatures have withdrawn support besides several of congress and JDS MLA’s who have already submitted their resignation. The coalition has lost not only majority but morality also to remain in power but still the hunger for power and greed to loot, shamelessly the alliance government is trying to remain in power.

Horse trading and if not possible, try to earn public sympathy when Governor of the state recommend president’s rule is the tactic JDS and congress party are playing. More than JDS, the causality for congress party is going to be high due to the shameless drama of its leaders to be in power without majority.

If congress party had gracefully withdrawn support to JDS and decides to go to people would have helped the congress party a bit. But it is too late for congress party to do anything to rebuild its image at national level due to Karnataka episode.

Actually the congress party had entered willingly to fire to self-immolate itself when it decided to support JDS leader HD Kumarasamy as chief minister just to stop BJP from forming government in Karnataka. After sometime congress lost its grip and JDS used the opportunity wisely and brought congress to a precarious situation and tried to malign congress party in public through weep and wiping out tears by HD Kumarasamy. When JDS-Congress combine lost majority beyond a point to no hope, congress party should have sensed it and should have allowed the coalition government to fall graceful than making attempts after attempts to demoralize democracy and make black hole to extinguish people’s voice.

Today congress cannot remain without JDS but JDS has its options open. If congress continues with JDS it would lose its credibility and without JDS, congress cannot contest alone in Karnataka.

People support and admire PM Modi and BJP because PM Modi is honest, committed and has transformed India in the last 5 years. India before 2014 and India after 2014 is so obvious and black and white to the world. When people of Karnataka wants BJP to rule the state, JDS and congress cheated the mandate of people of the state and then tried everything to destroy and demoralize democracy for power. The misdeed of the congress party is haunting the party at the national level.

Still time is not too late for congress party to ask for forgiveness to people of Karnataka and India for supporting JDS and demoralizing democracy. Once such open confession is made and pardon from people’s court is sought and apologised to PM Modi and BJP, certainly the congress party can do something to rebuild its image. Congress party must then work seriously to dismantle JDS and other regional parties from Indian politics.

Invisible prince and visionless sycophants of Congress party

0

The Congress dynast-prince Raghul Gandhi is nowhere seen these days.  May be floating on high moral ground due to his stupendous defeat in the recent parliament election but his rare appearance in the scene strongly suggests that he hasn’t changed nor would change.  That is why the TIME magazine has beautifully described him as ‘un-teachable’.

To India the dynast is visible but for his sycophants and punkah coolies, he is omnipresent.  Despite his omnipresence as claimed by his sycophants and punkah coolies, but they are clueless and appears to be searching again their Congress president in the same dynast. If not the dynast, let his sister who is also a dynast should lead the party is the growing voice of the sycophants of the dynasty.

The question of survival versus revival is when posed before the Congress men, they appears to prefer survival than revival of the party.  The meaning of meaningless survival, survival with full debility, survival on life support system, all these are as same as lifeless life but unfortunately that is what the Congress party wants to have by revolving around one family.

The politics of dynasty and entitlement are getting rejected globally and people are opting for merit and performance rather than giving importance to entitlement or birth right based prime minister-ship claim of some family members.

The sensitivity, responsiveness and responsibility shown by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to plug all loopholes that might siphon out all our efforts towards development of the state is commendable.

The new amendments brought in IBC (Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code) in the aftermath of Essar litigation is the best example for how PM Modi has kept his heart and soul in offering good and development centric governance and ensure all focuses and dedications are for sab ka vikas and not for dynastic politics.

Look at the culture of Congress party in Karnataka. It is struggling with JDS to remain in power but do nothing to the state.  People of India must take note of what is happening in Karnataka and must decide not to vote Congress party in future, and also other regional alliance of Congress party and allow coalition government to form.

Like corruption, nepotism and dynastic politics, instability and coalition government by several tukde tukde gangs are also ruining the state. Policy paralysis, lack of governance, frequent fight and threat for power, engagement for commission and reducing the opportunity to govern the state as ATM are the counter products of coalition government and the Karnataka model is the best example.

Let the Congress claim the dynast to be omnipresent or invisible, let the Congress men praise the sister dynast to head the Congress party but Indians should ignore the Congress party and must commit selflessly to pledge support to Modiji’s good governance to make India a great country.

Unity in diversity can be achieved only by reviving our ancient cultural treasure – Hinduism.  Irrespective of the various religious faiths being followed by several people, still the cultural sacredness of Hinduism can be seen in most of them.  Therefore the Hindu culture is the identity and index of India and only by promoting the ideals of Hinduism and Lord Ram, India can remain united, stable and strong nation. Even Gandhiji was an ardent devotee of Lord Ram.

The support offered by people of India to Narendra Modi in 2019 election must continue perennially and only then all divisive forces and forces that promote hate politics, dynastic politics, politics of nepotism and corruption, minority appeasement, fear mongering etc. can be eliminated from India.

Mandate abuse; new politics in post Modi era

0

The mandate of 2019 is absolutely one sided and there is no debate over the winner, the methodology or the credibility of the mandate, the EVM slur notwithstanding. EVM was the fall back guy for the Opposition in case they lost, as they did, and they did lose massive. The debate is not about the Winners or the Mandate but the manner in which the political developments have followed the 2019 general election.

The rumbling could be heard even as the result unfolded on our TV channels, the cry for Congress Mukt Bharat was almost on the verge being fulfilled by the electorate, the governments in the States of Karnataka & MP could feel the cold shivers of an electoral rout of the Congress. The mandate in Karnataka, a subject of intense debate for months was the prime target as far the supporters of the BJP are concerned. However, things are worse than just the abuse of the mandate. BJP cites Karnataka to bolster its case where the mandate was positively anti Congress and anti JDS but they managed to form an ungainly coalition to keep BJP out of power. The general election was being projected as the litmus test for both Modi and BJP, and an acid test for HD Kumaraswamy.

Where as Karnataka is on expected lines, the wholesale transfer of loyalties in the state of Telangana and Goa of Congress MLAs to TRS and BJP respectively is gross. This followed the changing allegiance of four TDP Rajya Sabha MPs a few are facing investigations in corruption cases. This trend is dangerous for the democracy in the longer run. It is not just a matter of an individual changing his colours, it is the betrayal of the Trust reposed in him by the electorate which going against the popular opinion voted him and made him their representative on a symbol which belongs to a different political party and a different ideology. We understand that the difference in ideology is no longer a curse of untouchability but the fact that the MLA or MP was elected by the people to represent that particular ideology have been betrayed too.

This glaring incongruity is an abuse of the Faith and the Mandate of that particular electorate. The plea that these individuals are acting as conscience keepers of their voice is a fallacy. The plea that the defections as changing colours, changing loyalties and changing character are called in electoral and parliamentary politics is a blatant fraud played upon the gullible electorate. If any representative, an MLA or an MP feels that he has lost the faith in his party and the ideology then he or she must have the courage to repudiate the ideology, the party and resign from his post to contest fresh elections. The Anti Defection Law was made to prevent brazen Horse Trading in assemblies and the Parliament but, it did not deter the more expedient to graft ways out of this law. The two-third majority law is the favourite, in todays politics where BJP enjoys the Pole position, the Congress is being torn asunder by its own elected MLAs in Goa and Karnataka.

The lust for power has blinded the representatives, the loss of privilege has further heightened the fears and insecurity of these representatives who are like fishes out of water. Congress is a waning power is nobody’s guess but the blame must be apportioned by all the players in the field. The conduct of the representative is reprehensible, no doubt about it but what about the party or the ideology which allows such audacious abuse of democratic norms and inducts criminals, corruption accused, rape accused, brokers and mafias. Goa is the shining example of the political expediency, now only one MLA, that is Pramod Sawant, the CM, is originally a BJP-RSS man left in the Goa Government, rest are Turncoats.

BJP always proudly proclaims that it is a party with a difference, it has an ideology to which it is wedded in a manner in which no other party is except perhaps the Communists. However, going by the shenanigans in Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, it seems that BJP is not averse to anyone joining the party. The antecedents of the new members have no bearing on their actions once they have joined the BJP. The Goa husband-wife duo is literally laughing their way to the famed Swiss vaults. Is the Top Brass of BJP really happy with the development cause these defections could not have happened without blessings of both Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. Are both the Bosses of the BJP complicit in arranging such defections is the question which comes to fore.

Is this the manner in which BJP wants to achieve its often repeated slogan of Congress Mukt Bharat also permeates the common men. The wholesale buying is symptomatic of the rot which has set in our democratic politics. It must be presumed that once a criminal joins the Party With A Difference he automatically gets cleansed of his sins of omissions and commissions by his very act of changing loyalties or changing colours. The list of BJP public representatives is full of turncoats, those who belonged to the Congress or any other political dispensation. On last count these turncoats amounted to almost one-third of elected representatives. Is BJP losing its way in its blind pursuit of its goal to make India free from Congress or more importantly free from the Congress ecosystem which has deep roots in the psyche of the institutions, mainstream media, judiciary, education, arts and cultural institutions.

The recent developments around the country are not good for either democracy or the BJP, nor are there any gains from such manoeuvres which lack credibility in the eyes of the common people. The defections points to the larger malaise in our political sphere, the loss of integrity was long compromised by all political players and parties, in politics there are no permanent friends or enemies goes the most abused dictum but the fact that there is absolutely no ideological meeting point makes such defections nothing but an exercise in aggrandisement of power and privilege which comes from associating with the party in power. It is the most fundamental difference which BJP and its ideological parent RSS has emphatically laid emphasis on in its existence for the last 70 years. However, the idea that there should not be any Opposition is violating the spirit of democracy, it is this idea which is pushing BJP towards instigating unsavoury changing of political affiliations while putting the blame on Congress, in its inability to deal with dissension within the Party.

It is nobody’s business to preach principles to a political party especially one whose stars are on ascendency but the fact most voters on either side of the ideological divide are convinced that this is betrayal by both the elected representatives and the BJP. Any self respecting legislator or a parliamentarian who feels the urge to leave the party which gave him the symbol to contest must resign his constituency and seek fresh mandate from the constituents.

Understanding the Hindutva movement better

0

The Hindutva movement in its myriad forms in the recent era has been around for at least 95 years now. Understanding this is a challenge to a lot many today given its total reluctance to embrace short term benefits while looking for permanent solutions. A lot us ponder on how further will this movement extend and some of us eventually throw up our hands into giving up on getting involved due to the unperceived results and slow crystallization of its workings. Well, even with all these downsides, the movement thrives and is growing. It is an eternal process and will hence at least outlive all of us reading this!

A few pointers from my end on what I think is necessary to understand this better. Of course, my own thoughts are evolving, so feel free to disbelieve them as you like.

Recent attacks on Hindus

The recent attacks mounted on us – regular Islamic aggression in the form of threat videos, unending cases of Love Jihad, Hauz Khas temple destruction, a Shankaracharya forced to perform Chaaturmaas on the street, destruction of the Nava Brindavana in Hampi etc. are not things that surprise us. Until now, Hindus have sulked and ignored and moved on. We all know that this isn’t the first nor will they be the last. But the organizations working for Hindu unification have always believed these are symptoms of a malaise. If we need a permanent cure, we need to start at a much more fundamental level of consolidation. Unification at the level of each and every Hindu and their refinement (Vyakti Nirmaan). Of course, the current attacks also need to be handled in every appropriate way. But there is something deeper here.

Societal transformation through elected governments?

I am not at all justifying some of the horrible actions that have taken place in the context of these incidents, but its simple – we aren’t strong enough as a lobbying power to push that policeman, politician, administration etc. to react in the most obvious manner when Hindus are attacked. Isn’t this the missing Vyakti Nirmaan ideal? This includes the Government itself as it is drawn from the same ecosystem. So the basic assumption of expecting the Government to ensure all societal transformations is just not possible. It is an ideal which we all hope becomes true.

We just cannot outrage on Twitter and expect the Government to turn these issues around for us just because we voted for them. This feeling of “our” government working for “us” needs to be done away with. At least the current government will appease none and will work for “all”. Yeah, I get the argument that a Mamata Banerjee or the Congress itself were better since they catered to their “core” votebank. but didn’t the BJP fight the very same thing to come to power? Now doing the same for Hindus will only fuel more separatist and identity based politics. We are not the trivialized argument of the counterparts of other vote bank parties. We are here only for this Nation and everyone in it.

Yes, the Government needs to be working harder and should do ideally much more than it is right now, but they also need to work on other issues affecting us and our children – Terrorism, Jobs, Infra etc. Please don’t try to prove to me that enough isn’t being done even in these areas. It may or may not be true and I am more than satisfied compared to the past 70 years. 🙂

Twitter outrage – Short term

Being on twitter is very necessary and is not to be undermined at all and fits one of the many sides of this ever changing dimension of Hindu identity and views. It is the most influential medium today tackling a whole mindset out there. But an online presence also needs a corresponding physical presence on the ground. The Communists today exist only on paper for a reason. They wrote reams of articles which none read and outraged by writing books and participated in conferences around the world. But isn’t it clear that they have lost their touch with ground realities and don’t make sense at all?

Outrage is necessary but again the medium is very important. It’s very unusual to find RSS or allied organizations fighting publicly over disagreements. Are we not family? Then no washing dirty linen in public or Twitter is a natural consequence. Dissing the people working for you in any capacity is not the quality of a mature kaaryakarta. Well, honestly BJP deserve every bit of the outrage on Twitter today and I am not here to justify their actions at all. I only differ in the way we express it. But at the end of the day, they are us. Don’t take everyone’s word for it, but believe the people who gave up their personal lives for this from the RSS or allied orgs. They have no returns, only rebuke from you and me, but still the movement survives. A lot of what BJP does is reprehensible (Goa, Karnataka, Jharkhand, etc.) but they are our best chance at this moment to fight for our survival with enemies at the gates.

Is BJP accountable? Yes and No

Visibility to what’s actually happening inside BJP itself is restricted to most of us, but yes, feedback shall be given through the right channels, If we don’t have access to these elected folks, let us get into the party and begin working actively. If we think its a dirty world and wouldn’t want to get involved please don’t, but allow the people who got in with some noble ideas to make mistakes and help them succeed. The filthy rich businessman, realtor, rapist, corrupt, turncoat, movie star… who got into politics is not yours to trust but the folks who emerged from the RSS etc. are surely yours.

If getting the ignoble charlatans into BJP is a necessary evil, leave it to the people managing it. They will do it the way they want so let us stop micromanagement. It isn’t the first time, right? Again, judging CMs etc. may be justified but holding them responsible for every individual incident will not solve anything. If they aren’t working according to our priorities, that’s fine.

How much are we working on the ground, what is our priority? Mocking at TINA or just being dismissive doesn’t again help so let us understand how democracy works with its constraints. Imagine the kind of confusion that sets in within a fence sitter who will just move away from all of these and just stop participating. We are responsible for that too for causing them that confusion by showcasing a divided house. Bringing them back into our fold – not easy.

If we want to provide feedback or be heard, connect locally or wherever we have developed a network and contribute to strengthening the system. Disappointments – Yes, Snubs – Yes, Returns – None. Will all the people who want to make a quick buck allow you to change it – Nope. But we are here to seek nothing and give our everything, right? Time to detach ourselves from the results and go on.

Permanent solutions

The Hindutva movement didn’t just grow by demanding more accountability. In fact, if we understand this movement well, we will not be affected by the usual ups and downs in electoral politics everyday. Didn’t the RSS grow well enough all along when Congress was in power? It was by the ground level kaaryakartas and pracharaks who believed in the ideal and devoted a lot of time, effort, money etc. in building this vast network. Isn’t this the shoulder upon which we are all shooting on today – be it Twitter or any other medium? Isn’t this new found assertiveness of the Hindu a consequence of these tireless efforts?

I think we owe a lot to these common folk who gave away a lot of their own careers, comfort and family life. They may have not been very intellectual to write an article or outrage on Twitter or talk in English but they certainly were dedicated. These people aren’t part of your study circle to expect intellectual companionship but are people drawn from all realms of society. Low income jobs, almost no exposure, big families to support but great commitment. Isn’t that enough? Being wedded to an ideology by dedicating time for such slow, agonizing, non-exciting Sadhanaa – hallmark of an ideal kaaryakarta.

Jnana or Bhakti alone may be insufficient, but if you have Shraddhaa, then the other two can be acquired over time and you can achieve all you want. Time to get a deeper understanding of this Shraddha towards the ideal we have set out to achieve.

It is time not to just get frustrated by the happenings and injustices to Hindu society but calmly strategize and work towards crystallizing the strength we have gained. Yet again, permanent solutions and not short term patches are required. Slow, evolutionary but crystallized gains. So let us support people who are both doers and thinkers and elevate them in the networks by providing them the right support, even if you disagree fundamentally.

Are we accountable? Yes…

Let us not expect Modi or Shah to answer or have them mention individual incidents just to bolster perception or morale, but it is now time to do our bit to strengthen locally on the ground irrespective of others. If connecting locally isn’t your forte, contribute wherever possible. Creating a narrative that they aren’t committed to Hindutva is the last thing we need at this time. Are we ready to give up one tenth of what they gave up for this movement? Never forget we started at zero with the whole system against us (Read Dr. Hedgewar). Today is it only a minuscule force trying to foster ill-will among us.

If things don’t go well, let us take up the responsibility and do not expect RSS and VHP volunteers to work on our behalf. They are normal people with the same or even more problems than us reading this piece. Ground realities come in to play once we are involved in the field of work.

Remember, we are here from almost a 100 years in modern times battling things very similar to these or worse than what is happening today. So let us not think we are the first to outrage or the most outraged. There were people before us and more will follow in this movement, but it is only we for now who can ensure this goes out better than how we received it.

Lastly, do no diss me for writing this piece as a BJP apologist as I am one of you and we are ONE family. Of course we have issues, time to get together and contribute by throwing out our inflated egos and arrogance, if any! 🙂

Charaiveti, Charaiveti!

HTN Saga – Golmaal Hai Bhai Sab Golmaal Hai

0

I know shutting down of HTN has been tremendously hard on some of the 200 people who lost the job, but I take comfort in the fact that the man & family behind this has been fully exposed and Indians are rejecting such anti-India agenda-based news networks.

The “alleged” melt-down of Barkha Dutt at non-payment of salary was comical at best and farcical at worst. Everyone on twitter going ga-ga over her alleged “upright” stand. Not just Khan market and left but what surprised me was even RW shedding tears for her.

Now you may call me paranoid for suggesting that this was all staged but hear me out what if this was staged. Someone who gets clean chit for Radia tapes, Awards for Kargil fiasco and someone writes odes in support of terrorist – rabidly anti-Indian, Anti- Hindu and anti-BJP would care about gun for hire news stringers.

Just take these alternative facts in the spirit of “Golmaal Hai Bhai Sab Golmaal Hai” (every time I hear or read Barkha say facts, truth, credible, love – I could hear that distant proverbial crow squeak in my head followed by the above song).

Shall we call these facts are post-truth (pun-intended, hope @swapan55 is not reading it). We all knew why HTN happened, the reason and forces behind this project. It was launched close to general election with one and only one intent to defame Narendra Modi, build anti-BJP narrative, create rift in society by peddling fake news, discredit independent agencies like EC, RBI, CBI, NIA and Judiciary if they don’t toe family writ. They used this network to openly threaten Govt. agencies.

Enter Barkha Dutt, she and Karan Thapar in their usual style started roasting Non-congress leaders and providing fire cover to Congress & family. Ran narrative to support people like Aatish Taseer, Arvind Kejriwal and acted as mouth piece of Mahagathbandhan.

Three years project plan, run anti-Modi campaign in hope that they could dent the majority and if BJP still makes a minority govt. continue to peddle fake news to discredit BJP govt and attempt to bring it down.

If congress makes minority govt. provide cover fire and leech GOI to recover the investment, a win-win situation. But Indian electorate had a different script for them, and the collapse was eventual.

When writing on the wall was clear these three had a simple plan, close the shop and cut losses. As usual Barkha & Karan came with the script, Kapil will fire all the employee, Barkha will have meltdown on twitter, gain sympathy of employees and fraternity. Misled and distract the employees, find out influencers buy them or bump them off and to quote Coupta ji “people will forget, and we will create new fake news to distract them”.

Should we sympathise – I randomly checked tweets of few of HTN “reporters”, it was full Anti-Modi, Anti -BJP rant and they did not spare EC and other institutes. Forget about calling them journalist I wouldn’t call them stringers. They are gun for hire and knew exactly what they getting into, nothing they produced is news worthy, hence I don’t have any sympathy for them.

I respectfully ask RW to stop shedding tears for them, they are well funded and will rechristen themselves and I request media houses to not touch them as they clearly identified themselves as rough-fake-news-peddlers.

Best part was Barkha bitching about Kapil’s wife, I don’t know what Kapil had to sacrifice to get her to agree for this kind of public lashing or Barkha and Mrs. Sibal might actually be fighting for Mr. Sibal or HTN – Wish Radia was around to tell the true story.

The finance budget upholds democratic values

0

The recent Finance-Budget presented by the finance minister Smt Nirmala Sitaraman in the parliament, was hailed by the ruling and obviously baited by the opposition. However, the eminent economist-columnists doubted the goal of $5 trillion GDP target to reach for the country. The prime minister called the critics of the goal as “professional pessimists”. Many economists have been criticising the sops or giveaways that PM Modi has promised to the poor by indirectly citing that Rahul Gandhi’s “suit-boot sarkar” jibe led to that pro-poor turn. That is not so. As a matter of fact, this BJP government in its previous term itself, realised that there was a large inequality in the society which had to be addressed.

Marked Inequalities in Material Conditions:- The external conditions of the poor are not same as the middle class or the rich in India. The poor dwell in slums with no electricity to light their homes and no gas to cook in their kitchens like the affluent middle and high classes. Specially, the rural people have no such required amenities. So, the BJP government recognised and put in place Ujjwala and Saubhagya schemes in its earlier term and as a result gained the confidence of the poor.

Now, in this term, they are concentrating on housing and water facility also for all poor families . Housing for the poor is a much needed program. ‘Equality of all Humans’ is enshrined in our Constitution. Hence, essential Equality of Material Conditions would produce equality among the inhabitants that would ultimately lead to equal power and political rights. In matured democracies (in the West), first they catered to material conditions of the people to be equal before becoming a democracy. That’s how they provided ample room for their people to take essentially similar positions. So, the government spending on the poor is not a futile exercise. Mahatma Gandhi and Deendayal Upadhayaya are for Antyodaya i.e. for the uplift of last man in the ladder. Normal social development of the poor is not possible without the government-support. Democratic society has to have a level playing field. Otherwise, democracy disappears that is even more dangerous to the nation.

Risks of takings big Reforms:- Some economists say – that big-ticket reforms are the need of the hour-the government has to take them up in this honey-moon period ( i.e. soon after getting elected with people’s mandate on a grand scale). Further, they are saying, since there are state elections round the corner, the government is resorting to populist measures. The analysis is: damn if the government does or damn if it doesn’t. Suppose, the government goes on a big way on labour and land reforms, which, of course, are not liked by people in general, the opposition takes to its advantages and wins elections. In that scenario, news channels, political parties and these predictive economists all join the bandwagon to say that the ruling is bad, state elections are a referendum etc. Let the law for ‘one nation one poll’ be passed to have hassle-free economic reforms for growth and development and for creation of jobs. However, the pro-poor programs have to be taken with renewed vigour, once the economy booms.

Equality and democracy go hand in hand:- In our country there is large inequality through inheritance. Rich become richer through inherited property. In the present budget, when the finance minister increased the tax-rate for the super rich, there was so much hullabaloo. The eminent economists say, the rich would opt for other Asian countries like the Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam etc. where tax-rate is less. Their other point -the government should invest and create a climate for the rich to have their enterprises, is a valid point. However, the rich should be happy for the government for not imposing inheritance tax. In all developed countries it (the inheritance tax) is in place. Following China’s Deng’s policy: the government should take poverty alleviation programs as well as creating conducive environment for the rich to invest-policies, for the development of the country.

In any case, the government has its own wisdom and is going accordingly. Of course, in equal measure, it’s taking the wisdom of crowds into account through ‘crowd-sourcing’ (for all decisions) which cannot be underestimated. So, the budget is a vision document for our society.

Marx and Management education

Karl Marx argued about how the proletariat was often subjugated and exploited by the bourgeoisie in conjunction with the theory of class struggle. Class struggle was defined as the continuous antagonism and conflict between the haves (bourgeoisie) and the have-nots (proletariat). While most of his work revolved around the distasteful relationship between employers and employees, his theory somehow fails to connect with the Management Education system that prevails in India and abroad.

The management institutes train the future corporate executives across India with the best brains flocking to get the post graduate degree in management. The economics of management education has often been debated on the question, “Can the bottom-line of Education be the bottom-line?” As known by simple theory of economics, demand is governed by the ability to pay and willingness to pay. Unfortunately, the prosaic definition of demand also applies in the context of management education.

The average fees in a management institute in India hovers between 20-25 lakhs and has never stopped increasing. While the cost of management education has grown up, the pay-packages have also augmented astoundingly. The basic premise behind the high fees is the assumption that every middle-class student will be able to afford it by means of an expected fat package. In other words, a management degree is akin to buying a 2BHk flat in the outskirts of the city purely funded by debt. Hence, a student learns to borrow first and save later to pay up the borrowed amount. Who is the Marxian bourgeoisie and proletariat in this context? The management institutes certainly represent the bourgeoisie but the students are not necessarily the proletariat. The primary reason behind the admitted students not being the proletariat class is because they can afford to pay the premium in lieu of a hefty pay-cheque.

But the “haves and have-nots” distinction still prevails. What about the meritorious graduate student who aspires to have a management degree but cannot afford it? This is where the demand definition fails in distinguishing between merit and means. This makes the coterie of the management institutes a den of the rich. As far as the poor student is concerned, is there a class struggle that he can engage with and break open the system? Probably not, considering their miniscule bargaining power and their reluctant submissive attitude.

Moreover, merit being a relative concept is available in unlimited quantity and the management institute would certainly have a huge pool to decide its students. Thus, even if there are sprinkles of class struggle, they get strangulated in the hands of the more dominating force. The poor meritorious student hence makes a re-alignment of his ambitions and then either searches for the affordable means of education or finally lands up in an elite government job purely based on merit.

The status-quo as such does not block the chances of a meritorious student to secure a job but certainly is based on an unwanted compromise. Hence, when Marxian theories are taught to the management students in slightly diluted form, they sound pedantic but not necessarily authentic. As far as students are concerned, there would be videos shared, tea-table discussions and some element of social work to express solidarity for the under-privileged section but hardly anyone would discuss about a potential more deserving competitor who missed out. Management institutes train the student to have all bullish qualities but never insist on having a bearish mindset. As an individual, this training improves your self confidence but as a society, it turns out to be detrimental.

If the student never learns to imbibe certain bearish qualities, he will perennially look down upon them beneath and ignore about their condition to look up. As far as the meritorious students who missed out solely due to finance are concerned, they continue to lead a life of compromise and adjustments reducing their risk appetite significantly.

Thus, the capitalist mindset continues to dominate while the academic proletariats remain subdued. It is obvious that the lifestyle and thinking patterns of the meritorious students coming from varied financial backgrounds would be different. But how would the management institutes benefit from a proper mix of the two? As far as soft skills are concerned, the richer meritorious student is expected to be better compared to his poorer counterpart primarily due to better exposure. However, the problem-solving approaches could be unique as well with the former more focussed on the ends rather than the means while the latter preferring the reverse. Hence, the latter’s approach might have long term benefits to their employer while the former’s views could have slightly short run perspectives.

This stems from the basic pedigree of the individual and his struggles. The individual who had to face thick and thin to reach where he was, would always try to focus on preventive remedies than curative ones. Further, the intermingling of various classes of students in management institutes makes the society more aware and receptive to the concerns. However, the present scenario of higher fees structure blocks the seeds of cultural inter-change to germinate.

While education institutes are entitled to earn profits and have good infrastructure through the higher fees, it is probably unjustified to make it a completely loan-driven initiative. The burden of loan repayment could turn nastier in case of any eventuality that might occur in the student’s future. Thus, pursuing management education, itself adds to a potential risk among individuals. Hence, when we keep anticipating that the next big entrepreneur would emerge out of the management institute, very few aspirants eventually turn their passion into profession.

Management education makes the individuals risk-averse especially when they start calculating the Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs).The high fees structure not only blocks entry of the poor meritorious students but also limits the growth of potential entrepreneurs who could have changed the face of the country. The need of the hour is to identify demand not just as ability and willingness to pay but by the ability and willingness to study and meet the competitive academic standards of management institutes.

The most commonly floated solutions to this menace are the government policies of reservation and institutional support like scholarships. The problem with any policy of reservation is that it is exclusionary by definition. In other words, if there is a 10% reservation for very poor students, merit might be compromised in order to accommodate means. As far as scholarships are concerned, they are generally indexed with academic performance after admission. Hence the poor student has to compete first to get admitted and then compete to get a scholarship, which is an added burden on a young mind. To arrive at a mutual settlement, the banks can play a crucial role in ensuring the balance between merit and means.

Taking cues from Australia, banks can make a distinction among students based on their historical income and repayment capacity. The poorer students could be exempted from paying the loans until their income reaches a certain threshold level and the rate of interest could be made equal to inflation. By linking loan repayments to income, the poorer student is guaranteed of greater leeway to participate in the management education system. This would ensure that management education remains less perversive and more pervasive.
