China hoodwinking Nepal and creating furrow between Indo Nepal relations

India and Nepal were called natural friends are now heading towards a diplomatic derail in relations after Nepalese Communist PM “K P Oli” declared in Nepali parliament that Kalapani area in Pithauragarh District undisputedly belong to Nepal. This controversy raised when Nepal reacted with alarm and anger to India building a link road to Lipulekh which was inaugurated by Rajnath Singh. In 1997, India and China agreed to open the Lipulekh pass to facilitate a travel route to Mansarovar but it was just paperwork and no serious actions were taken even this pass continued to be closed.

Nepal says Kalapani is part of its Darchula district in Sudur Paschim Pradesh. Kalapani is largely a valley formed by an arrey of Himalayan rivers, Kali, Mahakali or Sharda River at various points in Nepal and India. This pass has been used by pilgrims to visit Kailash Mansarovar since ages. China never wanted this pass (Pass is a natural road created between two mountains) to exist because it is a big connecting link between India and Tibet. It was also a historical trade link and also a link to exchange culture and friendship. India closed this pass after the Chinese aggression in 1962. But in May 2010, India reopened the Lipulekh pass for Kailash Mansarovar following construction of a new 22 km road which opens from a village called Gunji.

Understanding China’s Game Plan

China strategically doesn’t want India to build this road because although it is a road meant to fascilitate pilgrimage but can be used for other kinds of transportation and will add to strategic power of India in that area. China cannot object the construction of this road because it falls in Indian Territory and once constructed can pose to be a issue for china. China can defiantly object opening up of Lipulekh pass for at Tibet but that will bring huge international criticism for china for not allowing easy pilgrimage to Indians. This can also fuel anti china sentiments in Tibet and china will never want that. Out of this compulsion China has to show that it has no objection towards building of this road. Now china was left with only one option and that was to use Nepal as a tool and stop Indian road. We all know that Nepal Communist party is supported by china because communists believe in the theory of boundary-less world, as per there theory whole world should be ruled by only communists and to underpin this theory communist parties around the world always support each other. Because of the same theory USSR also supported communists around the world.

The Chinese Intervention in Nepal politics can be easily understood by the fact that In the early May, the political crisis had deepened in Nepal and senior leaders of Nepal Communist Party had publicly demanded resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, he approached China which is said to have played a significant role in saving his government. Chinese Ambassador Hou Yanqi held a series of meetings with senior Nepal communist Party leaders and resolved the crisis. In Nepal there is communist Government ruling the country. When the Chinese supported communist Government is ruling Nepal it’s obvious that china would like to use the government for the very purpose they supported them and Nepal Communist party will have to support Chinese mission, but although there is a communist Government in Nepal but conditions were not very favorable because Communist government of Nepal was not stable and a small downward wind would have shattered Chinese dreams. Now, china had to work towards building public sentiments against India, in Nepal. They were waiting for an opportunity to defame India among Nepali People and they got an opportunity that they were waiting for.

This all started in 2015 with Madhesi movement in Nepal, I am not blaming anyone but it’s possible that this movement could have been a part of strategy laid down by Chinese agency MSS (MSS is Chinese Secrete agency meant to work under the carpet) . due to which IOC (Indian Oil Corporation)  blocked the supply of petroleum products to NOC (Nepal Oil Corporation) for five months. Chinese pampered Nepali media and also social media influencers were used to blame India for this petroleum crisis to build anti India sentiments in Nepal.  Although the supply started soon in February 2016 but still anti India sentiments were fueled to make people think India as a country which is trying to exploit Nepal and china which was presented as a savior. This way the myth of Chinese friendship and hatred towards India was injected into the blood of Nepali population. This was Just the start of a bigger game that china was about to play and create a rift between India and Nepal. Now because people sentiments are built against India so it would be easy to pump any such border issue.

Although the reality was different, China had been using Nepal as a market for their products to be smuggled in India. India has liberal norms towards Nepal and people are allowed to purchase some amount of products and pass Nepal borders. Smuggling from Indo-Nepal borders also adds to Nepali economy. Nearly 56 percent of Nepali economy is dependent on trade with India.  If India makes all the borders strict, and stop trade with Nepal then just 6 months are enough to completely collapse Nepali Economy. Because china can supply them goods but Chinese cannot purchase from Nepal and only market Nepal has for these products is either home users and next is India. But we had good relations with Nepal and India never intends to harass any of their friendly countries.

Is there any Indo Nepal border Dispute?

In order to understand the depth of border disputes we need to understand the history of Indo-nepal relations. Indo Nepal relations goes way back to Ramayana age where Janakpur has been mentioned in the Ramayana as the birthplace of Sita, Ram’s consort. Charumati was a adopted daughter of Indian emperor Ashoka she was married to a Nepalese prince Devapala Kshatriya in Kathmandu. She is credited to have founded the monastery of Chabahil (called Charumati Vihara), which is one of the oldest Buddhist monastery of Nepal. After British became powerful in India Nepal realized the importance of widening their terretory. When Gorkha kingdom was on a move to widen their kingdom a military conflict that happened between East India Company and Gorkha Kingdom. The Anglo-Nepalese War (1 November 1814 – 4 March 1816), also known as the Gurkha War, was fought between the Kingdom of Gorkha and the East India Company. Both sides had ambitious expansion plans for the mountainous north of the Indian subcontinent. The Shah era of Nepal began with the Gorkha king Prithvi Narayan Shah invading Kathmandu valley, which consisted of the capital of the Malla confederacy. Until that time only the Kathmandu valley was referred to as Nepal.

About 99 percent boundary of Nepal is clear and well defined and there are no chances of any kind of dispute. Only one percent area of 35 square kilometer of barren snow-covered rocks at a height of more than 16,000 feet that lies in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, and Nepal claims it as its territory. As the boundaries in this area were not well defined a reference of boundary was taken from British maps. The 1816 treaty of Sugauli that brought the Anglo-Nepal war (1814-1816) to an end demarcated the Mahakali river as the western boundary of Nepal. India also acknowledges this area as Nepal territory but now a new story is coming, as per Nepal claim the origin of Mahakali River is Lipulekh pass so it should be under Nepal’s control. Although earlier also Nepal had claimed that this area had some disputed land but no one was interested in this area because of the extreme geographical conditions.

When IK Gujral was foreign minister that time also Nepal raised such issues but as the geographical mapping of the area was bit difficult inch to inch so it remained as it is. Even the river beds are changing and if this year you mark some area next year you will find little bit of changes in the topography of the area due to landslides and water movements. It was obvious that this one percent area was not mapped properly but IK Gujaral did a strategic mistake to accept any kind of anomalies in border area in this region but it’s a historical mistake which has become a main reason for present day dispute. This kind of dispute never rose before because this area was of no importance to any of the party. Even today this area is not important to Nepal, rather it will be benefited with this trade route. The only issue here is the strategic disadvantage of third party in Nepal which is indirectly governing the Nepal government and obviously that party is China.

What needs to be done

Now after understanding the issue India will have to take some strategic steps to resolve the same with Nepal. Although the existing communist Government in Nepal has a very good excuse of peoples sentiments but we all know how the people sentiments are influenced and only Nepal has to take corrective measures. We cannot move on two boats where one side Nepali government becomes a part of conspiracy and presents the situation to their people as if India has occupied some of its territory and their people are on some freedom fight against India and on the other hand India keeps supporting Nepal economy. The only issue that needs to be taken care in this situation is that if Nepal’s economy collapses china will keep giving loans and when the burden of loan will increase on Nepal China will start occupying Nepal’s area for its military purposes. In Pakistan China has already occupied Gwadar port and similar examples in Sri Lanka and Maldives.

“Sangh” & “Seva”- two synonyms

Bengal has India’s 2 largest rivers, the Ganga and Brahmaputra, these 2 rivers meet in Bengal province. In the year 1913 there was huge flood in these rivers which resulted in deaths of thousands and huge loss of property. As it was British rule non bothered about it, that became talk of the town in entire nation that how the people were affected yet British did not help them. Some people went to Ram Krishna Ashram and registered their name as “Sevapathak”. This organization went to far places and gave food to eat. People used to appraise them for their dedication to do Seva. These are the lessons taught in Shakha to Swayam Sevaks.

In an interesting document of shakha the word SEVA is explained in detail which is as follows. “Is going to work is seva.? Pujari doing pooja in mandir is seva..? Giving donation to get appraisal is seva..? Missionary working for one religion is seva.?? The answer to all these is NO. Then what us seva .? Seva is never ending dharma (work) which is done not to get anything in return not get any fame and name, and more importantly after this seva there shall not be an attitude of the work one did is called seva”. These lessons are the essence which make a organization to work towards public good.

When nation is in war against COVID-19 SEVA by RSS has set a benchmark for generations to learn from these. From a document of RSS the data’s speaks in itself. The data is, Places Served: 85,701, Dedicated Volunteers: 4,79,949, Ration kit donated to Families : 1,10,55,450, Meal packets distribution : 7,11,46,500, Migrant workers helped in different ways : 27,98,09, Blood Donation : 39,851, Mask Distribution : 62,81,117.

The numbers shows their hard work and their dedication to the society. Yet one another thing to be appraised of is the fact that SWAYAM SEVAKS REFRAIN FROM TAKING PHOTOS WHILE DOING SEVA. Had it been any other organisation they would have done so in order to get name and fame, but for RSS work speaks.

World Renowned Batsman and Captain Indian Cricket team Shri Virat Kohli has also appreciated sister organization of RSS the “seva bharti”. Seva bharti is engaged in seva work over the years. In 2016 Bihar floods RSS did Seva karya quietly with more than 11,000 volunteers.

RSS was invited for parade  on republic day by the then prime minister Nehru in the year 1963, in recognition of volunteered work done by RSS during war of 1962. They worked at traffic signals too at that time of crisis. Police and Paramilitary forces were either deployed on borders or were sent to the areas of where relief camps were established. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh sent its volunteers all over Northeast borders with relief materials.

RSS Parade on Republic Day: RSS believes in India- Bharat.

The sangh does not serve for selfishness, or to play it’s sitting. The society of 130 crores is it’s own society, is it’s own country, that is why we work. The victim- he has go work fir himself. No one is left untouched this is out motto” – Dr Mohanji Bhagwat

“As much power as much service is our tradition. With this sentiment, we have also helped the world as much as possible” – Sarsanghchalak Ji.

“Their work for society will always remain as an example of seva for future generations on India”.

China, the over smart rouge

The latest squeamish between the Indian and Chinese troops at Pangong Tso Lake, must not be looked upon as a simple border issue. This is a brick in the new wall that China is building to counter the growing global pressure on its actions, and the demand for accountability and repercussions on China by the global community. Several incidences like these are likely to happen not only in India, but across several places in the world.

To understand how China reacts and responds, one needs to understand that the Chinese are an ancient civilization, that were one of the four original ancient civilizations in the world, originating from pre 3,000 BC.

From forming their first dynasty rule (Xia Dynasty) in 1600 BC, followed Shang, Zhou, Qin, Han and Zin dynasties; China’s dynasty rule broke up into states for a nearly 300 years (300–600 AD). Subsequently, for a short period the Sui Dynasty took over, to be soon replaced by the Tang Dynasty, which ruled China almost till 900 AD. Following which China once again split into separate states ruled by different respective dynasties. It was then near 1470, that the Ming Dynasty took over the rule of entire China, and ruled for the next 300 years or so.

The Ming Dynasty was then replaced by the Qing Dynasty that enjoyed the power for the next 250 years.

Qing Dynasty, in 1912 gave way to the formation of ‘Republic of China’, through a civil war. However, this republic could not be established firmly throughout China, and infighting along with civil unrest continued.

In 1949, the ‘Peoples Republic of China’ was formed, with a Communist philosophy of governance.

This school of thought taken from the teachings of Karl Marx, was adapted to the Chinese culture that was predominantly governed by its ancient history and Confucius teachings. However, with the ending of the second world war in 1945, former allies the USA and Soviet Union turned adversaries, resulting in the commencement of the ‘Cold War’ in 1947, that lasted till 1991.

In 1949, led by USA, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was formed with countries pledging alliance with the USA. This block believed in democratic values, free trade and open economy, largely driven by values of Capitalism.

As a retaliatory action the Soviet Union, along with its own allies created a block under an agreement that has been known as the ‘Warsaw Pact’. These set of nations led by the Soviet Union, believed and followed the doctrine of Communism.

China, aligned itself with the Soviet Union.

As the Cold War progressed over time, the NATO nations started progressing and developed themselves into prosperous societies, having good infrastructure, advanced education, developed healthcare, robust industry and low unemployment.

Compared to which, the Communist block countries were struggling on almost all of the above parameters, creating currents of unrest, fear and uncertainty within themselves.

China, although not an official member of the Warsaw Pact, had been aligned with the Soviet Union, and had become the second most powerful member of the communist block. However, with the future of Communism itself being under threat of extinction; China, decided to move away from the traditional approach of Communism, and open its economic policy in 1978.

Eventually, in just over a decade the ‘Fall of Communism’ happened in 1989, and the formal collapse of the Soviet Union, China’s mail ally took place in 1991. China was left alone.

Democracy, is best described as a ‘Government of the people, by the people and for the people’; wherein majority public opinion, desire and choice are valued; and decisions taken in accordance.

While as per Karl Marx, Communism embraces the concept of “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”; leaving the decision of defining ‘need’, to the ruling authority. This takes away the option of ‘opinion and choice’ from an individual.

In line with this doctrine, China that was following Communism, unofficially started to transform itself into a party controlled, open economy; where in the party control is centralized to a few, and focused on ‘one’, which put in mild terms, would be a ‘Disguised Dictatorship’ model.

Keeping in line with this format of governance, and the emerging trends of the decline of Communism; China, commencing from 1978, took proactive steps to secure its future. In 1979, the ‘one child’ policy was introduced. 1980, saw the introduction of China’s first ‘special Economic Zone’ with flexible market policies

This model eventually led China to become, the manufacturing hub of the world.

With turbulent times ahead, China too faced several setbacks from early 1980s till 1990, that included the incident at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989.

The 1990s saw China in a new avatar, 1990 witnessed the opening of Shanghai Stock Exchange, 1992 the markets were further liberalized under government watch, 1997 Hongkong returns to China, 2001 China joins WTO, 2003 SARS epidemic breaks out, 2005 China becomes world’s fourth largest economy leaving behind Britain, France and Italy.

2006 China’s exports dominate the world, FOREX reserve crosses US$ 1 Trillion, the highest in the world, at that point of time. A lot of this growth can be attributed to the global market, where knowingly or unknowingly a huge trade imbalance was permitted to take place.

2008, China presents itself to the world in the form of Beijing Olympics.

(Only some of the major points have been mentioned here in order to restrict the length of this article)

China was now ready to claim its spot as a ‘super power’, and was ready to lock horns with USA.

In 2008, the GDP of USA was US$ 14.7 Trillion, while China had a GDP of US$ 4.6 Trillion. However, as of 2019, in just over a decade, USA’s GDP was US$ 21.3 Trillion, whereas China was catching up fast at US$ 14.2 Trillion. (World Bank Statistics)

Realizing its success in narrowing its gap with USA on the economic front, China now started nurturing an ambition of rivaling with USA, as the world’s leading super power. China also understands that confronting the Americans with traditional time-tested methods of engagement will not reap rich and quick dividends. This is where China falls upon its ancient philosophy that has been passed on from generation to generation.

Sun Tzu, a Chinese General, who lived 500 BCE, had delivered a manuscript that we today know as ‘Art of War’. The Chinese even in present time fall back upon strategies mentioned in this manuscript, and adapt them to today’s modern times.

So, it is not surprising that the Chinese have embarked upon the exercise to dethrone USA from it position as the world’s leading super power, using all strategies of engagement and deceit that are mentioned in the ‘Art of War’.

The Chinese strategy is simple and straight forward. So simple, so straight forward that it is not easily noticeable. Further the Chinese believe in deploying all means to realize their ambition, after all ‘All is fair in Love and War’. China’s multiprong strategy involves in identifying nations as clusters. The first cluster are nations that share a common border, or are in close proximity to China.

The second cluster comprises of nations that are geographically far from China, this cluster is divided into two segments. The first being larger and economically developing nations, the second are the under developed nations.

The third cluster is formed of nations that are the ‘first world’ countries.

China has a definite strategy, that it has already been pursuing for more three decades, to address all of these different grouping of nations. In order to effectively implement its strategy, China relies on three of its core strengths. Which is the size of China (both in terms of land mass, and in terms of population), it’s dominance on global manufacturing, and finally on its growing economic strength.

China knows that the three of these core strengths, put together, gives China the aura of being an all-powerful giant, which it has successfully branded as ‘The Dragon’. For the first group of countries; China shares its borders with 14 countries. Apart from Russia and North Korea, China has border confrontations with all other 12 countries, where it is claiming stake to land masses belonging to these countries.

In addition, China has geographic proximity, although not sharing borders with almost 12 other countries.

China engages with these countries with its military might as its primary weapon, and its economic clout as its secondary weapon; with India being an exception; where economic warfare is the primary mode of engagement, and clandestine military operation are the secondary mode.

With the second group of countries, where they are not in any kind of geographic proximity with China; China uses its dominance in the global market and supply chain of raw material and finished goods as its leverage, specially for the nations that have relatively sound economies. It also used covert / clandestine operations to install Beijing favorable regimes in these countries.

However, for developing nations, China simply uses its economic muscle to buy them out, mostly through debt traps.

The third and final cluster, is that of developed nations. Nations who are politically mature, and have robust economies. Here, China seeks favors for Chinese companies and aims at increasing the trade imbalance. As here China realizes that its strong-arm tactics would be futile.

This is the cluster which China primarily attacks with deceit. For the Chinese, ‘Deceit’ is an all-encompassing verb. Be it political, economic, military or prohibited arsenal (under the Geneva Convention)

(The Protocol for the Prohibition of the ‘Use in War’ of Asphyxiating, Poisonous or other Gases, and of Bacteriological ‘Methods of Warfare’, usually known as Geneva Protocol, is a treaty prohibiting the use of chemical and biological weapons in international armed conflicts).

The word used in the Geneva Protocol is “armed conflict”, what if the conflict is “unarmed”?

The easiest, fastest and most direct method of weakening these nations is to bring their economy to a standstill, while China can grow its economy rapidly and make up ground at an exponential pace.

Even if it meant using biological warfare; as the words used in the wording of Geneva Protocol is “Armed”, hence it the protocol will not apply to an “unarmed” conflict.

The COVID-19, strategic approach, perhaps might have just worked; had it not for some step gone terribly wrong. Wherein, the entire process went out of control, resulting in a global disaster.

However, the strategy seems to have made up some ground for China.

Whereas USA, has been termed to have entered into a recession in March 2020 itself; by certain economists (Business Standard), India will be the fastest-growing this year at 2.1 %, China and Indonesia will grow at 1 % in 2020, EIU forecast said (Financial Express).

This makes it apparent, that China is using all methods at its disposal, both fair practices and illegal crafts, to achieve its ambition of global dominance.

However, this time it seems that the Dragon has swallowed more than it can chew. China, would have never imagined a direct attack of accusation by the US President, and neither would it have imagined that a trigger by Australia, would make the entire European Union, and host of other countries; openly come out and confront China. The referendum presented and accepted by a collation of 123 countries at WHA, the governing body of WHO, did catch China off guard.

In addition to the above, the global community has finally realized the importance of eliminating China as the manufacturing hub of the world, and have decided to pull out their key assets from China. If China’s manufacturing is dented, one of its pillars of strength will fall, which possibly could result in widespread unemployment and unrest within the country. This would have a propensity of disrupting the current political structure within China.

China knows that the four key countries where organizations will probably shift their manufacturing operations to are India, Indonesia, Philippines, and Malaysia. China, will want to paint a picture of instability and insecurity for these countries in the mind of the prospective corporations who desire to shift their facilities.

India is witnessing an economic warfare and a clandestine military operation, being unleashed by China. The other three countries should also be guarded and be prepared to tackle the disruptions that China will create for them.

Amidst all of this pandemic, allegedly created by China, there is a silver lining.

In a time of dire distress like this, which the world has never before witnessed; nations across the world are uniting, sharing whatever they can, extending helping hands to each other; bringing the world closer, and forcing the world to recognize the truth … and more importantly act on it, as one.

Maybe, this time, the Dragon has grown too big for his shoes …. And the shoe bites back. Poor Dragon, forget running, or even walking, you might be just lucky if you manage to crawl.

The tragedy of our national song “Vande Mataram”

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote the poem Vande Mataram in 1875. He was 37 years old at the time and worked as a deputy collector in the British Government. His poem was probably an Indian answer to the British national anthem, God Save The Queen (or King, depending on who was ruling).

In the poem, Chatterjee described the nation as the mother. Chatterjee said, “I have written this spontaneously. I may not live to see how it is received, but this poem will be sung by every Indian like a mantra in the Vedas.”

He included the poem in his novel Anandmath, published in 1882. In 1896, two years after Chatterjee died, Rabindranath Tagore recited the poem at the Indian National Congress’s annual convention in Kolkata. The tradition of singing Vande Mataram (as it was pronounced in Sanskrit) at Congress conventions continued, and even today it is sung at the beginning of Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha sessions.

In 1907, Hemendra Mohan Bose, the first Indian to manufacture gramophones, the earliest devices that recorded sound and played it back, recorded Tagore singing the poem on a phonograph cylinder, the first commercial media for gramaphone recordings.

During protests against the partition of Bengal, which the British effected in 1905 for both administrative and political reasons, Vande Mataram became an inspiring song for many Indian revolutionaries. Soon, it became a protest song in India’s long struggle for independence.

But some Muslims found the song objectionable because they felt worshipping a mother was a polytheistic practice and more generally because they found the poem’s other cultural impulses to be Hindu.

For several years until 1925, Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, the great Hindustani classical singer, used to sing it in Raga Kafi at the Congress’s annual convention. He would sing all the stanzas with instrumental accompaniment and all the members of Congress would stand at attention for several minutes. Thus, it became the Congress party’s anthem.

In the year 1937, during the meeting of the Congress Working Committee in Kolkata, its members decided to cut short Vande Mataram to the first stanza with the sole aim of not offending some of the Muslims present. But those Muslims were not satisfied with this because they wanted to eliminate the song completely from the conventions. The Muslim League chairman, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, raised an official objection on March 17, 1938, to even the first stanza being sung. Thus, the song became politicised.

In 1937, in many regions of British India, the Congress came to power during a brief colonial experiment in granting a measure of autonomy to the provinces. At this time, in deference to Muslim sensitivities, the Congress government banned Vande Mataram from being aired on the radio.

The musician and singer Krishnarao Phulambrikar protested against this ban for several years, declining to sing for the radio. “If there is no Vande Mataram on the radio, then no song of mine will air on it either,” he said. After Independence, the ban became irrelevant, and in 1947 on Gudi Padva, the Maharashtrian New Year that falls on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra, Master Krishnarao, as he was called, gave a radio concert that concluded with Vande Mataram.

On August 15, 1947, at the stroke of midnight, while the world slept and before India woke to its so-called freedom, before Nehru announced his tryst with destiny, Omkarnath Thakur sang Vande Mataram in Parliament House. He literally heralded Independence. He followed this up with a khayal in Raag Malkauns. There were transmissions on the radio.

Now, it is notable here that, the congress working committee cut short the Vande Mataram to just only the first stanza, because other stanzas says that how Hindus of Bengal (as the song was composed for Bengal) defended their motherland from Muslim and British invaders.

As, this was not liked by Muslims, so as to appease them, this patriotic song was cut short. So, according to this logic, since there are 20% Muslims in our country, we should not even write about Islamic invasions in the history books too. Muslims will become more happy.

World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros’ dubious record

0

The World Health Organisation to the allegation that appeared in various media sources in Europe about a telephonic conversation between its Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Chinese President XI Jinping through a statement on Twitter on 10 May. The statement says that the allegations of the two talking over the phone are unfounded and untrue and, in fact, they did not speak on 21 January at all and have never spoken over the telephone ever.

The allegation had first appeared in a German magazine Der Spiegel where it was claimed that Xi had asked Tedros to suppress news about the Wuhan-origin novel coronavirus disease 2019 (nCOVID-19), which led to a worldwide pandemic. The magazine cited German intelligence agency BND as a source.

The magazine claims that the Chinese president and the WHO head had had a conversation on 21 January where Xi asked Tedros to suppress the information that COVID was an infectious disease that can transmit between human beings. As it is evident, COVID-19 has killed nearly 2,00,000 people around the world and most of them are from the US. The global crisis has slowed all economies and it will take several years for the global economy to get back on track.

The new revelations made US President Donald Trump’s stand against China stronger. Just a few days ago Trump had said that China would do anything it could to make him lose his re-election bid. However, it’s more an indictment of the WHO head than of the Chinese president. One may always argue that a head of a state ought to work in the interest of his nation rather than for international interests.

Dubious and Questionable Track Record

Tedros has had a questionable track record as the health minister of Ethiopia. He had earlier allegedly played down cholera casualty in his country. In 2017, Prof Larry Gostin had said about him that though he was a compassionate and highly competent public health official, he had a duty to speak the truth and honestly identify and report verified cholera outbreaks over an extended period. Now Tedros is accused of running a UN organisation upholding the interests of China!

Even though the US is the major contributor in terms of donations for WHO, over the years it has not paid the required attention to the functioning of the organisation. All this while China, with little contribution to the organisation, has been able to manipulate its functioning. At the same time, China got its own people placed at various levels, mostly as junior executives in the UN agency.

China being an emerging power aims to supersede the US and dominate the world order. However, since it cannot match it in hard power, it has devised a plan. Over the last three decades, China has tried to use international organisations to its benefit. The WHO is one of them. Even with a questionable track record, Tedros became the director-general with the help of China.

In an interview to BBC, Meg Davis, a global health specialist at Geneva’s Graduate Institute, echoes with the American President Donald Trump as he says the WHO’s position has been an awkward one so far. He puts blame on Dr Tedros as according to him China was the place where the world first saw the outbreak; however, his organization failed to report on censorship, repression of whistleblowers. Had those reports come from officials of the organization, the world may have prepared well.

Now it’s apparent Dr Tedros’ mollycoddled China and there is a reason behind such a behavior. A report from British newspaper The Daily Mail reports that in 2015 and 2016 China gave some $16million to Ethiopia in spending commitments and cash contributions, largely in support of food or refugee programs. Remember, this was also the time when Dr Tedros was the Health Minister of the country – is not it Quid Pro Quo?

His love for dictators and totalitarian regimes is not new for a reason. He was a member of Tigray People’s Liberation Front, a militant organization in Ethiopia. When he became Director General of WHO, he proposed Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s president at the time, as a WHO goodwill ambassador. He had then appreciated Mugabe’s policies and work on universal health coverage and health promotion – this was done again on the direction of China as it wanted Mugabe to get re-elected.

Dr Tedros and China have mutual love for each other where the latter has been all praises to the authoritarian development model of Ethiopia, the earlier has helped in the biggest cover up of the Corona virus disease. Now that is evident, Dr Tedros visited Beijing in January itself, he was not aware of the censorships and suppression of the doctors, sounds dubious. Instead of taking the true stock of the things, Dr Tedros praised Chinese government’s transparency and the speed of its response. In fact, he credited China with saving lives both at home and overseas.
