Socialism- Why it grows more in appeal the more it fails: An op ed

0

Say what you will about the Left, but their ecosystem maintains a healthy strike rate in peddling their narrative while the Right continues to be called out for it. All the while, the same shady and manipulative meshwork succeeds in labeling the NDA-led Right wing as propagandists, saffron terrorists, Goebbels worshipers and whatnot. In the Indian context, all this could be determined by prominent factors such as a large and established Marxist base, decades of Congress hegemony in national politics, unsettling poverty statistics (which continue to improve by the minute), and of course, correlating communal politics with economic policy for vote grabs in election season.

However, on a much bigger scale, one that’s unrestricted to South Asia, is a profound machine at operation which exploits one’s emotions and morals. Breeding mental turmoil to convince you that what sounds fair and just, is always what is right. The basis of the Left’s ideology must be approached not in the ways of sugar-coated paper paradigms; rather its practical application to national economic policy. Sure, equitable distribution of wealth sounds like a good idea, and the concept is indeed a good idea supported by everyone who believes in the principles of justice and equality, but the question remains- Is it realistic?

To answer your question, one must consider the evidences that no matter the century, decade or the year, socialism unadulterated i.e. absence of free market elements, has always failed. It happened with the Soviet Union’s communist regime; it happened with the People’s Republic of China which suffered a devastating famine and was forced to introduce economic reforms in 1978; and more recently we can take the example of Venezuela, which despite being an incredibly oil-rich country with an estimated capacity of 303 billion barrels, collapsed in on itself after the socialist leader, Hugo Chavez staged a coup against President Perez following the aftermath of an oil crash in the 80s. Their income redistribution policies, agricultural nationalization and high expenditure on social welfare programs, all the while the government was choking markets to death, led to a spectacle of riches-to-rags in the 21st century.

The desperation of pseudo intellectuals is unending, for they attempt to refute the claims of failure with the example of Norway by outright declaring Norway a socialist country. Although it is true that the nation has a successful track of resource redistribution and a high place in the happiness index too, what the socialist fails to acknowledge is that Norway is one of the biggest exporters of oil while relying on hydro-power itself, thus reducing its necessity to use up its own fossil fuels in excess.

Secondly, its population is 5.3 million. To put this in perspective, 20/28 states in India have a population greater than that. Large sums and few mouths are bound to make people happy. As to the question of large sums, where does the money come from beside exports? Here’s where the supposed socialist element comes into play. Left’s claim – Norway does all this while retaining control over their markets and industry. Fact check – False. Norway’s government owns large shares in incredibly successful indigenous corps and redistributes the money it earns from them in social welfare schemes, while allowing the companies to run freely without intervention. This socialist miracle is still an example of the success of capitalist elements.

The pinnacle of fiscal doom is what the average Leftist defines as class equality amongst people, while making excuses of foreign interference by the capitalist West in creating political instability by backing political rivals; yet they blissfully ignore pre-existing conditions of disharmony and economic claustrophobia created in the first place by political animals with a taste of their ideology. The grand machinery of the Left does not bury the truth, but molds lies into truth. This truth is sold to the people via social media and the press, which is quite ironic, considering they are essentially commoditizing with ‘quality assurances’ from their network of elitists with fancy degrees, doctorates and all kinds of laureates strategically placed in high-profile organizations consisting of both NGOs and UN backed groups like the UNHRC, UNICEF, WHO etcetera to provide convenient data and statistics. Now all that remains for the ready-to-sell commodity is a marketing team, which consists of social media influencers, actors and actresses, authors, musicians; you name it. These reel-life heroes become social justice warriors and champions of the oppressed within seconds of allying with the left.

Therefore, one can safely reach the conclusion that the selling points of idealism and jargonized variations of social justice, while holding a solid economic basis in the short term, are a recipe for a national doomsday. They appeal to the youth because of their morality and pious, holier-than-thou dispositions, and are therefore the easiest instruments to corrupt a young and developing mind into believing all kinds of propagandist agendas set by the very elites who claim to despise elitism. In the end, the more they fail, the more they complain about how it wasn’t done in a democratic country or how “it has never truly been tried at all”. But because their ‘marketing teams’ sell it right, people buy it.

The youth buys it and it continues to remain a symbol of hope, peace and harmony across the globe. And all those believe in this childish become pawns in a much larger game of authority, power and control over resources; for command of the resource is the sole determinant of power on this planet. It is truly, truly ironic how these leftists which label capitalism as the source of all evils, reach out to people through the power of free press and free markets, with methodology of commoditizing their ‘brand of truth’ to peddle enough propaganda for people to ‘buy’. But fret not, as the right’s slow yet steady advances in the digital world are soon going to put its competition – “Out of stock”.

इस घटना को वाशिंगटन पोस्ट ने अपने 26 जून 2013 तो प्रकाशित हुये अकं में निम्न शीर्षक से छापा “State media: Violence leaves 27 dead in restive minority region in far western China”.

Free speech: The hallmark of civilization

0

As one may expect, any discussion with the eminent clinical psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson is eminently enlightening, and it so follows that one of his conversations with Dave Rubin and Ben Shapiro was no exception to this impressive feat. I shall, for the purposes of this post, employ that temperamental description of the political Left and the political Right which he had employed in the said conversation.

Owing to the ubiquity of congenital inequalities amongst humans, there shall ever be some such people who are more dextrous at giving effect to that which we value. Hierarchies, therefore, are inevitable. It is the logic of hierarchies that gives occasion to the division of labour, and bequeaths to our actions a semblance of efficacy. The political Right, therefore, insists on the preservation of hierarchies; it is temperamentally intrinsic to the Right to celebrate competence.

Some such people, however, who may not be as dextrous at giving effect to an action, would be dispossessed by the hierarchy, and they shall therefore be at the lower rungs thereof. Moreover, intrinsic to a hierarchy is the proclivity to calcify; to become so steep as to render the ascent of the dispossessed nearly impossible, and those already at the top may gratuitously use their influence so as to keep the dispossessed permanently so, as well as thereby accrue to themselves more benefits. The political Left, therefore, while cognizant of the significance of hierarchies, also draws attention to the dispossessed, and serves as a watchful entity in order to ensure that the hierarchy does not calcify.

Consequently, there must be a continuous dialogue between the Left and the Right, for the precise moment of the calcification of a hierarchy cannot be predicted in advance. Such calcification could only be determined once the hierarchy has been experienced. So that such conversation may proceed with utmost vivacity, therefore, freedom of speech is of utmost essence. It is akin to a commandment that must not be violated; certainly not by way of physical force.

Never can a human profess the pretensions of perfection, and so it follows that the complex systems we generate through our myriad transactions are susceptible to voids as well. Religion, nation, government, ethnicity, culture and all the hierarchies thereof, are thus not above critical analysis, which, courtesy of their imperfections, may lead to the incremental degeneration of society with the progress of time. A societal consensus on free speech is significative of a willingness to continually improve, and to not let creation, namely, the hierarchy, impede the autonomy of the creator, namely, humans.

The said autonomy presupposes the freedom to employ a satirical manner of critiquing a belief system. It also presupposes the freedom to employ the most uncivil of words. Against neither is prosecution warranted, for human life is superior to the preservation of a belief system.

I venture, again, to employ Dr. Peterson’s rationale. I may, in a conversation with a friend, be able with ease to ensure that I do not offend him, or what is rather vaguely termed “his sentiments”. I may, in a conversation with a panel of ten people, be able with some difficulty to ensure that I do not offend the “sentiments” of any of them. Of what Brobdingnagian divinity do you suppose I am, however, that you expect from me the miracle of not offending anyone in an assemblage of a thousand men?

We desire to augment, in our selfish interest, our individual perspicacity. A prerequisite to this is free ideation, or the creative process of generating, developing, and communicating new ideas. But if mere communication is to evoke within you such indignation as to endorse my prosecution, how am I supposed to survive? Why must my existence be subject to the placation of your conceit, which you rest on your doctrinaire adherence to your belief system? Who has bestowed upon you the authority to control my life?

There subsist in this world some such barbarians who perpetrate the most sordid acts on mere account of criticism of their belief system. Their actions are certainly heinous and inhumane. Does that alone, however, qualify your pretensions of humanity should you be willing to endorse arrest for criticism of your belief system? Perhaps the latter, in its severity, is far more humane, but both actions are essentially inimical to individual liberty.

Scarce is there any empirical evidence that the State is necessarily more rational than the masses. As Abhijit Iyer-Mitra notes, institutions reliant on the masses, and the State in a democracy is certainly as such, are neither any better nor any worse than the masses themselves. The government in India can certainly not be accused of adherence to rationalism; in so irrational a country as India, rationalism would scarce be propitious in the amassment of votes. Accordingly, the State must not, so long as I do not physically violate another’s liberty, have any jurisdiction over my sphere of liberty. He who ascends to power does not thereby prove his innate superiority over others; he is a trustee of the faith which the masses repose in him. He is no better than a barbarian, therefore, should he thereby assume that he can subject the liberty of those in his governorate to his arrogant, sweet will.

Belief systems cannot be privileged. The arrest of Munawar Faruqi is deplorable, and so is the killing of Kamlesh Tiwari, more heinous though the latter action is. That it be deemed a divisive ideology to maintain consistency with regard to liberty is merely inaugural of the speciousness of our public discourse. View it as fundamental humanity, not a political ideology.

Why Biden presidency is an extension of Trump Foreign policy 2.0

Outgoing US POTUS Donald Trump might have lost United States Presidential Elections but he has ensured the President-elect Joe Biden will have to follow his foreign policy. And it will be hard for Biden to undo the policy decisions of Trump administration ranging from the Middle East, China, India, Taiwan, Tibet & beyond.

A year before American missiles had eliminated Iranian major general of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Qassem Soleimani & in november Iranian Nuclear Scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was killed by remote controlled weapon. Iran retaliated by firing 22 ballistic missiles at American bases in Iraq and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps had termed this as “Fierce Revenge”. And this has sparked fears of retaliation by Trump administration before Biden takes office. And this spoil’s Biden intention for any rapprochement with Iran on 2015 nuclear deal. In Middle East Biden will continue to push Abraham Accords after normalization of ties between Israel and Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. He will ensure further pacts are signed between Saudi Arabia & Israel further.

In Afghanistan & Iraq the incumbent Trump administration has decided to withdraw 2,500 troops & entered into interim arrangement with Taliban to end its war against the government in Kabul. The depleted US force in troubled regions faces risk of increased attack going forward. And the hawkish military advisors of Biden who would have hoped for greater commitments from Taliban would be inclined to stick to the U.S.-Taliban deal.

In November Tibetan govt-in-exile President Lobsong Sangay visited White House for the first time and met US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, Robert Destro. The development acknowledges legitimacy of Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) & its political head based in Dharamsala. And month later the incumbent President signed the Tibetan Policy and Support Act of 2020 into law, thereby reaffirming US support to His Holiness Dalai Lama. The newly enacted bill has asked Chinese government to stop meddling with the spiritual traditions and practises of Tibetian Buddhism and also stated China not to interfere with His Holiness Dalai Lama’s reincarnation and install its own candidate as Panchen Lama. Also the bill outlined to protect the environment and water resoruces of Tibetian plateau & also mandates for the establishment of United States Consulate in Lhasa. And in the event of non compliance by dragon the bill states not to authorize any new Chinese consulate in the United States.

On 28th December 2020 the Trump administration incorporated Taiwan Assurance Act of 2020, which supports the deepening of U.S.-Taiwan ties on the basis of the Taiwan Relations Act (1979). According to act Taiwan is entitled for US$2.3 trillion government spending package that incorporates provisions supporting Taiwan’s defense capacity to enhance its asymmetric capabilities, including undersea warfare and air defense capabilities for the free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy and its participation in the United Nations, the World Health Assembly, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Criminal Police Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and other international organizations.

Both the bills on Tibet & Taiwan received bipartisan support of the Congress and Biden would be forced to carry on the foreign policy of Trump of questioning the one policy of China which states Taiwan and Tibet as its integral part.

In June Trump has ordered withdrawl of 12,000 troops from Germany and this measure caused strain in the NATO alliance. With Biden deciding to review this decision and revive strained US-European alliance. With the COVID impacting world economies it would take time for NATO to return to normalcy under Biden administration as allies may find it impossible to meet American demands for defense spending.

To counter the growing dominance of Huawei in 5G arena, the incumbent President has barred vendors worldwide from using U.S. technology to produce components for Huawei. The dominant Chinese provider of 5G technology will get no respite in the Biden administration as the latter will work with European Union to create a “Transatlantic Trade and Technology Council” to set joint standards with the U.S. on new technologies. The global alliance will counter China’s tech offensive. And Biden has stated in his foreign policy for US to get tough on intellectual property theft and state subsidies that give China an “unfair advantage.

With respect to Russia, Biden has promised to take stern actions against Russia by slapping financial sanctions for the cyberattacks. An in retaliation he has promised to knock out Russian phone and internet networks. And once he assumes office he will need support of European Union who are unlikely to support the move as they are dependant on Russian energy supplies.

Biden administration is also likely to continue the Trump foreign policy with respect to South Korea, affirming to continue defense relations and resolve North Korea issue through multilateral diplomatic approach.

The formation of Asian NATO popularly called Quadrilateral Security Dialogue or Quad, which brings together India, Australia, Japan and the US, is an outcome of today’s multi-polar world. The four countries have come together to address issues of mutual interest such as maritime security, tackling counter terrorism, building alternative supply chains etc. To counter Chinese belligerence expansionist behaviour & for working towards free & open Indo Pacific, India had organized the Malabar exercise in which the navies of four countries participated. Biden has assured Japaneese Premier Yoshihide Suga that America will defend islands in the East China sea and will continue the “Trump Era Indo-Pacific policy”.

The Biden administration understands the critical role of India in building comprehensive strategic partnership in formalizing QUAD in future. And India will lead the QUAD in countering the threat from China. The bipartisan consensus that existed during Trump administration got India closer to United States as strategic partner, which led to signing of defense cooperation pacts like Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA),Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA), Industrial Security Annex (ISA), high tech arms sales agreements and joint military exercises. And in the Indo-China clashes at Galwan, Americans provided intelligence to track Chinese positions and publicly condemned Chinese actions. The above stated factors state that Biden administration will not reverse any actions of Trump administration.

Biden administration will have to be cautious in dealing with Pakistan and they will need to ensure that rogue nation status quo under Financial Action Task Force (FATF) remains for supporting terror financing and money laundering. Today Bill introduced in U.S. House to terminate designation of Pakistan as Major non-NATO ally.

And we need to see how India can continue maintain it’s strategic relations vis-a-vis Iran & Russia in the new regime under Biden. In the nutshell Donald Trump has already set the foreign policy of Biden administration and its very little the new regime can do to undo the initiative as the American strategic interest as national interests are what determine foreign policies of nations, not personal bonds and relations between leaders.

Never to be broken ABVP-JNU activist

Goons in the mask of students! Storm of red terror destroyed the peace of JNU on 5/1/20. They the human bunkers of steaming red terrorism in the campus had lead to injuries in the heart and memories of innocent students.

We were (ABVP_ians) the innocent being who dreamt of doing something for our nation while studying and after studies in JNU. But these Communist/ red terrorist tear apart our flesh and bone like a monster. These monsters played fake propaganda against “us” the innocent being and tried to push us far from our goals of national service.

But nothing matters for us when everything is about truth and factual information that the whole wide world might want to know. We are concern about the security and life of our batchmates and future juniors. Walking back on the horror trail of JNU red terror, let me recall the incident that made me scared for life.

We received a mail yesterday, It was from a common student of JNU. He was there on the campus on the day of 5th January 2020; the day that will be remembered as a black day in the history of JNU, and in the history of any academic space. He did not want to reveal his identity because he feels scared in the campus now. And I am sure, that this feeling is not only a single student’s story, but it is a story of most common JNUites now. I felt that this story should be shared with one and all, so I am sharing his words with you all. He writes,

‘We rarely courageous enough to sit and write something but today when almost a year has passed, I still cannot forget about the nightmare of 5th January 2020 when I lost, when I lost myself, when I was a loser I and am in a hurry to accept that yes, we were defeated and I do not wish to stay but to move on for a new game, blank on what to do, who to share with, whom to convince, whom to trust, whom to consult, whom to ask for help, how to escape this fear and feeling, I had no other option but to write. Even after writing this, I know nobody is going to get affected and more than half won’t read but even then also I am here to free myself, I am here to let my feelings get the “AZAADI” from my incapable being and let them float somewhere, where nobody is socially boycotting them. I just wish if this feeling would get immortalized as a text and none could harm it, so I’m writing.

It was the incident of 5 January 2020, the incident is known to one and all, everyone knows the truth now, but even after knowing everything people have spinelessly accepted what happened with us and not only accepted but also supported “THE RED TERROR GOONS” and spread more hatred for us among the common students of JNU and also among the common people of country through their left-led media propaganda. But then I remember whomI was pleading to, I have forgotten the truth because I haven’t lived with it and have always had trust with the “Common Students Concept”.

It slips from my mind that you are them and they are you. Many so-called neutral students told me that ‘what happened was right’, ‘we were the culprits’, ‘The whole attack was planned by ABVP’, ‘you probably deserved that’, and what not. But the harsh reality about what they were unaware of were, Students jumped from balconies, ran half naked, bleeding, smiling and thinking in their mind“Somehow we have survived and escaped” but leave it, let’s not discuss it because I can’t mention every individual’s pain and noone’s pain is less. Noone’s tragedy can be compared with others and only a few could be written. I am still mentally disturbed and depressed from that incident although it has been 1 year and none of us were responsible for that incident but the so called liberal media gave all the blame of that incident on our head.

Our Parents have cried from their heart and just told us beta “Just leave ABVP”, “If you will be alive you would see many more things in life, and“Your full life is in-front of you but why would you care”. But somewhere inside our heart we knew that these communists are among those people who celebrate mourning by burning settlements .A common people  will never realisehow it has changed lives of a common student. I myself will never be able to see old me ever in lot of ways. I will never be able to forgive those communist and those so called neutral students for what they all did to us and are continuously doing with us. But we remind you all that we are still just battered not broken. Thanks to my surroundings and those positive people who gave us a ray of hope that “Do not give up, do not let your courage settred”, “We will work hard to rise up again”. I salute these undying spirits and feel proud to be a part of such a positive family. I never realised that people we live with, share benches with, share mess plates with, share a cold drink with, share a laugh with can be so brave and real life heroes. I feel proud to be an ABVP activist today.

Last year when the sympathisers and activists of ABVP JNU reached their hostel and the way people looked at us, the way everybody was behaving, we couldn’t figure out for first few minutes as what’s happening but then we felt that weare from ABVP. I clearly heard people saying about many specific persons “How we missed him,” “How he survived”. I didn’t understand, what to feel at that time angry, irritated, frustrated, low, hopeless, demoralised, demotivated or happy. I just knew that we broke down after a really long time, we wept and that’s how our 2020 started, thanking ourtears to make us feel good and free.

I wanted to shout at the loudest of my voice that I’m an ABVPian and I’m not a goon. We were bleeding, we were traumatized, we were still to recover from that shock and we were also humans. I never imagined that one day I’ll have to run away from JNU campus I once happily called mine.

COMRADES urge normal students to socially boycott us, not to sit with us, not to talk to us, not to be our friends. Students were thinking of suicide. I swear, if any of my friends would had done anything, I would had never forgivethose commies and the so called neutral students who are tilted towards communism and almighty won’t too. Parchas with photos of people were distributed among students as an open invitation to lynch us. I could see intolerance here, we knew now than it can feel. People were fearing walking with us, activists were afraid of entering mess for distributing mess parchas. My heart sank when my roommate said that “Sorry Brother, We have to erase the holy sign of SATWIK which is on our room’s gate”, “Also we have to remove the paper cut of SHUBH DIWALI”, other wise they will break the gate of our room and beat us.

I couldn’t believe on his words. But it was ok, I was recovering, and I was sure “I’ll never celebrate Diwali until I feel, the place I live where I’m not supposed to be attacked by seeing Swastika sign and Shubh Diwali jhalar.” For a small interval of time I thought I also started thinking WHY I AM A HINDU and felt sorry for my religion as well. I was helpless. At that point of time, where I was already being boycotted by more than 70% of people in JNU campus but truly I didn’t give up in front of these “boycott-ers”, because after that incident I realized that they were never with me. Those who were with me will always stand by my side in my bad time without looking my ideology and religion.

I couldeasily see my friends losing hope and saying “Leave it, Bhai. Just spend one more year in JNU and go away. You will not able to do anything to them alone. These people will not leave you.” But, I was able to breathe because there is a world outside JNU, Iwas able to breathe because JNU isn’t everything, my whole life has not ruined, not everybody outside will tag me a goon or whisper TRAITOR at me even without knowing a single thing. I was able to breathe because there’ll be a time I’ll be free, I’ll be heard, I’ll be understood, I’ll be respected. There will be place where truth will be respected, there will place where common people would decide after seeing facts, there will be place where common people will be common, there will be place whereI won’t suffocate, there will be place where I will proudly say that I survived in JNU as an ABVP activist and people will clap. I was able to breathe thinking in mind that this time will pass, good times will come.

I recall there was a time not long back when we loved this place and even thought now“it were all right”, “it had not happened”, “I wish we were happy”, “I wish we were alive in JNU”. Today I feel life is not so short and there are people other than my college mates, there are ideologies other than left also. I am very lucky that I got such a group of such wonderful friends due to whom I don’t feel shortage of real and caring persons in my life and they always keep me away from double-headed people. Otherwise Ihad already reconsidering this life and had planned that everything will be alright in the next life. I failed to keep check on my words even after checking a lot. I m sorry again. Thankyou pen!

Either we die or live but will keep on fighting for the truth, for us ABVP JNU activists “students lives” matters and we will fight back urban Naxals. We might get feared from the anti-India forces from but we will keep on fighting for our nation.

BY A YET TO BE BROKEN ABVP-JNU ACTIVIST

Here is why I support the farmers protest!

0

Yes, you read it right, I support the ongoing protests, blocking the roads, getting the tolls free, “Bharat Bandh” and so on and so forth. I know, I wrote several articles in the past where I tried to explain the positives of the farm bills and I still stand by the three bills. The bills were much needed agricultural reforms. But yet here I am supporting the protests. These protests and demonstrations are not related to the contents of the bills so to say. We have to look at the bigger picture to understand the significance of the farmers protest. No, I don’t mean to insinuate that the people protesting are Khalistanis or something like that; absolutely not! What we today see as a farmer protest isn’t just a protest, its a revolution. This revolution if succeeds is going to set the tone for the next decade India.

I agree to the protesters when they complain that the central government did not seek their consent before they came up with the ordinances. I stand with them whey they say “we reject the amendments suggested by the government.” I also stand with them when they say “we are open for talks only when the center repeals the three bills.” I do this because this is in my best interest. It is going to help me in the near future. And I would suggest you do the same.

Once the government caves into this artificially created pressure and repeals the three bills, I am sure the people who I am going to support now in this protest, will support me when I will protest for my issues. Its simple, you scratch my back and I scratch yours. That’s the only reason why people who were protesting for repealing CAA are now supporting farmers protest.

What are the “black”, unjustified and fascist, laws, acts and practices I want the government to repeal? There are many, but I will list a few so as to give you a perspective. These laws affect me directly and if you have some that affect you, please feel free to mention in the comments.

Starting with the reservation laws. This has been bugging me since class XII. My best friend wanted to be a surgeon, he scored 138 out of 200 in UPCPMT, but did not get any government seat. He thought may be he was not good enough, and was fine with it till the time he came to know that our mutual friend, who we used to attend the classes with, shared our lunch boxes, played in the same team, scored just 67 and managed to get a government seat and will now be living the dream. It took a lot of time for my best friend to come out of that trauma. In addition to this, the supreme court of India also rejected the prevailing concept of reservation in 1951 but the then prime minister Pt. Nehru in all his arrogance overturned the court order. Please have a look at: When court accepted that the Caste based Reservations violate Fundamental Rights. As a matter of fact, I do support reservation to some extent, even in the name of castes. But not in the way it is being practiced. The government should have invested its time and energy in bringing a reserved category student that scored 67 to the actual cut off list of 148 instead of bringing the cut off list down to 55 just to win easy votes. That’s a fraud, it is not helping anyone not even the reserved categories. Also read: Caste based reservation violates fundamental rights of even the reserved castes!

I asked every general category person around me if the central government sought their consent before coming up with the reservation laws. No, the government didn’t. Hence, these “black” reservation laws should right away be repealed. We reject all the amendments made by the government and would be open for talks only when the laws are repealed. Otherwise, once these ongoing protest achieve their desired goals and the government repeals these three farm bills, some people just need to continue the exact same thing that is going on now for a couple more months. The setup is already there. No new system has to be defined.

Moving on to the next issue. This is an even more interesting issue than the first one. The Minority affairs! It turns out that the concept of minority commission in India is unconstitutional, as the constitution of India doesn’t give a definition of “Minority”. It uses the term Minority in Articles 29,30, 350A and 350B but does not mention anywhere as to who is to be considered as Minority. How is anybody deciding who is minority? On the basis of vote banks and elections? As per 2011 census, Hindus are in a minority (population wise) in as many as eight states in India. These are :  Lakshadweep, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. We will have to wait for the next census to see how many more states are added in this list. The interesting part is that these Hindus are not entitled for any minority benefits. They are not beneficiaries of Union Government’s 20,000 scholarships in the field of technical education of minority students. A public interest litigation was filed in the supreme court highlighting this. The petitioner had also cited an instance from Jammu and Kashmir where Muslims were 68% of the total population and yet were allotted 717 out of 753 scholarships, but not even one Hindu student got that scholarship.

Did the government seek consent from the people in the majority community before awarding any kind of benefits in the name of minority community? No, it did not. So, we reject all the amendments made by the government as far as the national commission of minorities act is concerned. We are open for talks only when the government first repeals the “black” National Commission of Minorities Act of 1992. Otherwise, once these ongoing protest achieve their desired goals and the government repeals these three farm bills, some people just need to continue the exact same thing that is going on now for a couple more months. The setup is already there. No new system has to be defined.

Having said all that, there is a major problem with these two issues. Even if the protests do happen, they will turn violent and communal in no time. Caste and religion, the two biggest pillars of our vote bank politics, I think the rest is understood. So, I brainstormed further and found some more issues which are caste and religion independent similar to the ongoing farmers protest.

Starting with the agriculture income. As per section 10(1) of Income Tax Act 1961, agriculture income is exempt from tax. As per the section 2(1A), any income generated from farmhouses, or any rent or revenue derived from land which is situated in India and is used for agricultural purposes is counted as agriculture income. As an example, if I have 25 acres of land available and I rent it to a farmer at INR 50,000 (average market rent in Punjab) per acre to him, the total 12.5 lacs that I receive as total rent would be tax free. However, if I would have rented it for something else (other than for farming) I would have paid INR 2,00,000 as tax on the exact same income. So, it is quite possible that my knowledge about agriculture says that potato is a fruit and grows on a tree but I will still be counted as a “farmer” because I make agriculture income by renting the property to farmers. That’s why India has more than 55% of the population involved in agricultural and yet agriculture contributes to just 15% of the GDP. Point to be noted here is that I am not even talking about money laundering in the name of agriculture income. You must have heard some politician growing cauliflower in pots on the terrace and making millions out of that. Every other politician is a farmer these days. Some day I will write a separate article, how, people are washing money from black to white using agriculture income. But for now it also gives a hint as to who might be protesting and why. First thing first, define a farmer!

I am not at all insinuating that the government should tax agriculture income. I just want to know if the central government sought consent from the other 1.49 crore Indians who paid tax last year and many others who have been paying taxes all their lives before, before their source of income was kept outside the purview of section 10 of Income tax act. No, the government did not. Why this discrimination with us? So we reject the amendments made in the income tax act. We are open for the talks but the government should first repeal this “black” income-tax act completely, let alone the tax slabs. Why can’t the government put this “black” law on hold? Otherwise, now you know what comes next. Don’t you? I don’t need to rewrite the same three lines over and over again. Do I?

Moving on, just a few days ago, the farmer leader Mr. Rakesh Tikait made a heart whelming speech asking why Hindu temples are not supporting them like Gurudwaras are. He was unhappy that people visit temples and make donations, but the temples don’t use the donations for public benefits like religious institutions in other religions do. I am not at all surprised by his statement. He probably needs to read Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act, 1951. As per this law, government controls the administration of Hindu temples. This act was brought in existence by the British Raj to exploit the Hindu temples, and later instead of repealing the law Indian National Congress amended it. You can find more than enough number of petitions trying to get it repealed. The irony is that the bigoted Hindus/sanghis/right-wingers/andh-bhakts are fighting for justice the legal way but the educated, liberals, innocent poor farmers are holding cities and public properties hostage and making demands. I wonder if some people in India think that the courts are to be approached only when capital punishment for certain terrorists have to be postponed.

Once again, did the government seek consent before coming up with the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act, 1951? No they didn’t. Hence, we reject the act and will be open for negotiations only when the “black” act is repealed. Either all the religions be included in the act or all the religions be excluded from the act, no discrimination! Otherwise… you know it. The setup is already there.

These were just a few laws that affect me, but I am sure a country with billion plus people would have a lot more issues and problems. They all could support each other and get their demands on the table one by one. Unemployed people should also be entitled for MSP (Minimum Support Package), that too in accordance with the Swaminathan Commission i.e. 1.5 times of the C2 cost. If private companies don’t hire them, the government should hire them all, does not matter if there is a demand or not exactly like the wheat/rice procurement. Life imprisonment with a minimum of 14 years is just too much; this is inhuman. It should be reduced to a couple of years or even less, criminals are also humans. Aren’t they? Did the government take any consent from the murders and rapists before coming up with these draconian laws? No it did not. This is clear fascism. The government should repeal these laws right away and then we could do a debate, discuss and come up with meaningful laws exactly how the protesters want it today. Otherwise…

I believe you would have got the point I am trying to make. It is the right time to support the protests, it is imperative that it is known as to how many days protestors need to hold roads, tolls, markets and other public places as their hostage so as to get their demands fulfilled. If it were a coalition government it would have been very easy, but now things are tough. Once the threshold value is known, protests can be better managed.

[Disclaimer: Just to clarify, it is a satire. The author does not support any practice leading to anarchy. Laws are regulations should be decided in the parliament not on streets. The author thinks that the government instead of sending their ministers for talks should be sending crisis/hostage negotiation experts.]

If you liked the article, please do share it with your friends and especially with those, who are supporting these protests. Thank your for your valuable time!!

Illogical demands of protesting farmers

0

The farmers protest for over 40-days in Delhi and the continued impasse, is basically due to lack of knowledge/understanding by the farmers in true perspective about the three Farm Bills. This is not to say without any empathy for the striking farmers in the biting cold of Delhi’s winter. Some of them have lost their lives in the due process. Of course, it is pathetic.

For those who view young and old farmers that have come on tractors and camping on make-shift tents, in boundaries of Delhi, do have their grievances. Rightly, the central government is trying its best to address their concern and fears. In that direction the Centre has made many changes to the Bills like: to give in writing that the system of minimum support price (MSP)-continuation, given option to farmers to approach courts of law in case their (farmers’) agreements with corporates land in trouble, and has also agreed to exempt farmers the penal provisions for stubble-burning. Along with those the Government also has agreed upon, not to alter subsides on power consumed for agricultural purposes. As a matter of fact, the Government by granting all, has weakened the intentional Liberalisation of agriculture, in effect: the three Bills. Yet the farmers are not relenting. They, at their 7th round of talks with the government on 4th January 2021, continued to be steadfast on their demand of repealing of the 3-Farm laws and ensuring MSP. They forget, that there should be, ‘give and take’ on both sides.

Adamant Farmers: The farmers saying: “Kanoon wapasi nahi, to ghar wapasi nahi (we will not go home until the laws are withdrawn)”, is holding the Govt. up to ransom.  Basically, the farmers gathered are all (almost) from Punjab and Haryana states. Not from the entire country. Maybe they have their sympathisers elsewhere too, but not seemingly evident. The moot question is: how can two-states’ farmers could put the Government to test? What right do they have to seek the repeal of three-Bills that are for the development of the entire country’s agricultural-sector? The opposition is egging them on, is a known fact. Of course, the opposition always fishes in the troubled water. When they are in the Government their attitude is different. The Congress and the Left-parties do not have any right to be alongside the farmers. For, in more than 70-years of independence, the Congress ruled majority of the time in cahoots with the Left-intellectual ideologues. Have they ever bothered to do land-reforms by way of land-distribution to the farmers i.e., land to tiller? They maintained the feudal-system for so long. Now, the small tenant-farmers are suffering at the hands of big landlords.

Are striking farmers, farmers really? The striking-farmers are not really big farmers. They are all small peasants and farm-labourers. They are extremely worried about, because they think these laws are a threat to their livelihood. The routine they follow by taking the produce to market-yard-mandis and selling for the fixed MSP by the Government, is disrupted. To them this causes chaos and confusion. The big farmers who sit in their cosy comfortable houses in cities and enjoy the agricultural income without paying tax, are at the back of this agitation. Not at the fore-front. For them, liberalisation of agriculture would be a hazard. This is a kind of privatisation.  It makes them accountable to the income-tax department to pay taxes, at a later point on their income. They cannot evade tax as earlier. As a matter of fact, India cannot afford this many not falling under tax-bracket.

The Government is open-minded Throughout the discussions the government has been open-minded. Thought that care should be taken to assuage the farmers hurt-feelings. However, deep-down farmers view corporates with deep-pockets would initially provide more money than mandis and thus weaken the system of mandis eventually to wipe-out. This could be with or without a ploy, likely to happen. A big farmer should be an entrepreneur. He must judge for himself which crop is durable and enriching. That liberty is given by this liberalisation. Always, growing wheat and Rice is not tenable.

In the rest of the world in many nations viz. Argentina, Brazil & Australia the grain is grown in large quantities using technology. Precision-agriculture i.e., using Information Technology (IT) application for soil and crop surveillance, mapping technologies- satellite data together with drones’ crop-scouting have increased productivity. In India too this kind of technology could be used. However, farms with small-units make adoption of these technologies difficult. This is not in any way to discourage small farmers or to impose technology-driven farming in India. This is only to show that the vast quantities of grain these countries produce, is cheaper. India is not at dearth of grain like in 1960s. Large quantities of rice and wheat produced in India is under “storage and wastage” of Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown.

Migration to urban areas is needed– Farmers with small land-holdings work in their fields unlike the big farmers that give their farms to tenant-farmers to till. In these days, farming is not a sought-after profession. Earlier, in India agriculture delivered more jobs than any other productive sector. To import grain is much cheaper than the cost of production in India, with so many subsides and income-tax exemptions. In other countries agriculture equipment is increasingly performing automated work from sowing, harvesting to packing and supplying. In this scenario instead of depending on Farm-sector, it is better for small farmers’ children to have education. That would provide less physically demanding and more financially rewarding jobs. For which, the farmer needs to move to urban areas to work in factories and other infrastructural sectors. Roll back of farm-laws is not in the interest of country.

The progressive reforms should not be held hostage, as a few farmers are agitating. Any reform would get some hardship to a section of people. During 1991- Economic Reforms there were apprehensions, protests and doomsayers too. Yet, they weren’t stopped. Similarly, these laws should go ahead. The farmers should stop their blackmailing tactic. Their dictum: state is my right, no out-side system can do better, is illogical.

“From Sufism to Ahmadiyya: A Muslim Minority Movement in South Asia” Indiana University Press, 6 apr.
