Why bursting cracker is important for maintaining the secular fabric of the nation

0

I wanted to take a cab to the airport on Diwali night. It wasn’t easy to find one as most of the cab drivers were also probably taking the day off to enjoy the festival of lights.

I eventually found a cab. The driver, Ismail Khan, eventually came to pick me up. While in the cab, I asked whether he had a busy day as most cabs were off. He responded back saying that he was also not driving as he was celebrating Diwali with his kids.

For a moment, I was taken aback. I asked whether he celebrates Diwali. He said that his kids have a lot of fun bursting crackers. So, they all join together with other Hindu kids in the locality in celebrating it. He went on to add how this single festival keeps the brotherliness in their locality despite people being divided by different religions.

He went on to add that people demanding cracker ban do not understand that if you ban crackers you do not just remove the fun from Diwali but you also remove the reason for kids of other religions to also join in the fun. As I disembarked from the car, I couldn’t help but fathom at the profound understanding of the driver.

Playing with colours on Holi and with crackers on Diwali is so much fun for kids that many kids from other religions also participate. The bonhomie that arises out of such festivities also helps keep the society bonded.

It appears that the vigorous liberal lobby of the nation wants to destroy this secular bond. That is why they have been strongly inventing one or the other reasons to remove all fun elements from our festivals.

It is in the last ten years that these lobbies have been successful in getting regular bans or stays against such celebrations and it is the same time period during which religious intolerance has grown. This cannot be a coincidence.

I want to wish that this is not a planned conspiracy of the manipulative liberal lobby to create a religious divide in the country. But if only wishes were horses.

PS: Neither I took a cab on Diwali nor there was an Ismail Khan. I was just trying to imagine how I would write my opinion if I was trained by the ‘liberals’

Citizens in democracy should have a Right to say No: Here is what for

0

Long back I had read an opinion in the newspaper talking about “others“. He said Indians are not liked by Hongkongers because they did atrocity on them under the British regime that native Chinese refuses to do because native Chinese think of Chinese as “us” and all others including British as “others“. He argued that Indians have a different sense of “us” and “others” and do not depend on nationality. He also wondered if Jaliawalan bag could ever occur in China while it happened in India where Indian soldiers fired on their own Indian unarmed civilians under the direction of a foreigner Britisher. That idea stuck to me and made me keep pondering over it over years.

Jallianwalan Bagh massacre
Indian soldiers fired bullets on their fellow unarmed Indians under the order of a foreign British officer. An artistic depiction

I realized his premise is wrong for two accounts. 1) Chinese did on themselves far worse atrocity than jallianwalan incident in the form of the Tianmen Square massacre where they don’t just use guns but tanks too on their own unarmed Chinese civilians. 2) I read in my studies about the ‘in’famous Milgram experiments and obedience to authority. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment). In short, in that experiment, common people like you and me were found to be willing to do atrocities on our own people under directives. They did not put the onus of doing atrocities on their own concise but on authority where they were mentally passing the onus to the authorities. (bad karma will not come to me but to one who is asking me to do that).

Tanks used in Tianmen Square massacre

As per Hindu philosophy, these arguments hold no moral ground. In Mahabharata, Dushasan was punished brutally for his misadventure under directions from Duryodhan on Draupadi. Bhisma and Drona were punished too because they too did not stop their employer. In fact, everyone in that hall was punished in one way or other for not trying to stop a bad deed. The silence was taken as acceptance of that bad deed. Only Vidura was spared as he said no to it and left the room. From here the genesis of my thought emerged. The right to say NO.

Mahabharat Depiction

But before we discuss that let’s look into what happened in Independent India. We took the British legal system and its administration almost as it is with minimal changes. The British build the system to benefit themselves the rulers. And they expected nay rewarded people who were willing to do anything on their command. any of their employee who refused their order was punished heavily. Our whole independence movement was built on their right to say no, the proverbial “Savinay avagya”. Ironically, this British system was never dismantled and used by the nouveau Britishers. Nehru used the administration to spy on Netaji’s family without anyone saying NO to him. Sardar Patel who confronted Nehru on his blunders was sidelined. Indira took it to nadir with her YES-mam culture where Indira became India and India became Indira. All government machinery made themselves busy implementing draconian emergency.

Even today we see people blindly following orders causing great harm to society and Dharma. An SP orders shooting on unarmed civilians going for Durga visarjan in Darbhanga and her orders duly comply. No one said NO to that draconian “orders”. On other far ends Delhi police face violent attackers on Red fort and do not use lethal force as there are no “orders” to use force and get maimed and injured grievously. No one revolted and said NO to the “orders” of not using the force to protect their lives.

In far and few cases we do see people revolting and implicitly saying NO. The most recent one is the cracker ban on Diwali this year. But there is no support or legal framework to provide citizens their right to say NO even when they are right and morally obligated to say NO.

We need to arm our people, our police, our administration, our politicians, and even our government to say no when they think what is being asked of them is not right. An unfettered right to say NO can make the working of society chaotic. However, still, we need to arm every citizen of this country in its role to say NO at least twice in a year to any ask/directive that is contrary to his/her concise. Let a policeman say NO to an SP and not fire on unarmed civilians going on Durga visarjan.

Let a Govt say NO to judge that is meddling in govt functioning. Let a citizen say NO to govt trying to put unwarranted restrictions on their lives. When every citizen of India gets a right to say NO (even if a limited number of times yearly) without any consequences then only s/he will be free in a true sense. This will also put a limit/restriction on any authority. This will truly be the safety valve of our Democracy and make it more vibrant and protect it from misuse.

Not just Arnab Goswami; truth has won

It has been a year since Arnab Goswami (Editor-in-Chief of republic media network) was arrested. On 4th of November 2020 at 7.45 in the morning, about 15 cops surrounded Arnab’s house with AK47s and about 25 surrounded the building with them. The cameras of the family were forcefully turned off. The Mumbai police thrashed, physically, and psychologically assaulted Arnab in front of his wife, in-laws, and child.

Arnab was dragged by the hair and not even allowed to wear his shoes. Arnab was prevented from giving his in-laws medicines, and his son was physically assaulted by them. Legal notes could not be obtained from them. Without a shred of evidence, they paraded India’s leading editor-in-chief as a criminal. Arnab was not served summons prior to the arrest when they promised on the court that they would do so three days prior.

As Arnab was being manhandled, amidst the ridiculous act, he said, “They hit me. They physically assaulted me. I want to tell the people of India to fight for us.” He said, “my son was beaten-up.”

A year has passed. Sachin Vaze, then Mumbai API, was arrested by the NIA on March 20 for placing explosives in the car, thereby invoking the UAPA against Vaze. He has been suspended again from the police force. He is now being held under police custody at Taloja jail. In his confession, he said that he was forced into arresting Arnab Goswami and was given money to do so by Deshmukh.

ED is currently investigating Deshmukh. He has been arrested and is being held for six days. He is also no longer the state’s home minister.

Parambir is in hiding as well. It was he who began the fake TRP case. He seems to be in Belgium. He was given a non-bailable warrant by the Mumbai police for his arrest.

Communist-isation Of a Nation

0

Soviet is dead but the ideology lives on. A layman’s observation on the current state of political conversations in the country will show that there has been a large shift of young individuals towards left-wing in the last few years. On a surface level, the phrase “If you are not a socialist when you are young, you have no heart and if you are not a capitalist when you are old, you have no brain” makes sense but a 1984 interview by an ex-KGB spy might state otherwise.

Yuri Bezmenov was a KGB agent in India who later defected to Canada. In one of his interviews in 1984, he revealed a four-step plan for Ideological Subversion of a Country. Ideological Subversion is a liberal word for ‘Communist Takeover’ which refers to how a country can be demoralised and destabilised using the Communist ideology. At the same time, he warned America of what was about to come in the future.
He had revealed that there are four stages of an ideological subversion:
1. Demoralisation which takes 15-20 years;
2. Destabilisation which lasts for 2-5 years;
3. Crisis which lasts for 4-6 weeks;
4. Normalisation which lasts indefinitely.
While his warning may be to the American citizens, we can see a parallel to this in India in recent times.

Demoralisation

Demoralisation is the first step towards ideological subversion. The process of Demoralisation takes the most amount of time because that is the time it takes to teach and imbibe into an entire generation, the ideology of Marxism and Leninism.

The spread of this ideology over to the elite universities in the past few years is evidence that the process of demoralisation has already started. The potential recruits, as he says are large conservative media persons, rich filmmakers, academicians, and cynical egocentric people. These are the people who would happily destabilise their own country for their lack of morals. Recently, we have seen a plethora of these rampant elites being openly vocal about their ideologies. These people are specifically sought for as they have power over the minds of the younger generation. In the age of social media, this influence over the younger minds has increased multi-fold.

Further, he says that once this generation takes positions of power in a society, it becomes difficult to control them. These people become blind to facts and react to a stimulus. At this point, we have reached a point of no return.

The process of Demoralisation aims at reducing the values of the country. We see this across the political spectrum, where Indian values are synonymous to hate against minorities. A prime example of this is saying ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ is wrong and not standing up for the national anthem is considered okay. No wonder people are getting programmed. In the age of social media, more so than ever. Yet, we underestimate the impact this will have on India over a course of time.

Destabilisation

The next step is Destabilisation. Mainly three proponents of a country are attacked here- economy, foreign relations and defence. Initially, the decline of a system may feel normal due to several proponents like increased inflation, neighbouring country accessing your territory etc. but the fall is evident.

Crisis

The most important process here is Crisis. The period of crisis only takes up to six weeks. An example of the Crisis period is Central America as Bezmenov stated where a country is pulled down to its knees. He was referring to the period of the later 1970s when civil wars and communist revolutions started erupting in major Central American countries from which they haven’t still been able to stabilize.

Normalisation

The final process is the period of normalisation. Once a country goes through a period of crisis, it may never be able to come back on its feet. Hence, the process of normalisation is when India has had a long history of attacks on its territory but no attack had become successful because the moral fabric was retained. This is where it gets tricky here. The first process mentions de-moralising. Once the morals of a community die, the revival becomes more difficult.

What can be done?

Before we get into the solution, let us first look at the problem. A common argument for the most liberal progressives is that we are moving towards a relatively social and equal society. Yet, this theory can only exist on paper. Bezmenov adds that once these people understand what the society of so-called equality means in practice, these are the same people who will revolt. However, the time would have passed. The same people who cried for a more equal society will get executed due to their revolt. Fascism would be suppressed by Communist fascism.

What then can be done to curb this? First, we need to nib the problem at the bud. As stated before, the demoralisation process has started. Steps should be taken both by the parents and the government to ensure that the children of this generation do not get recruited into these ideologies. The National Education Policy of 2020 was fundamental in this sense as it inculcates into the student Indian values as stated in its fundamental principles. Though, the Policy hasn’t yet to been tested to check its effectiveness. Further, the most important role here is of parents. The dynamic of parenthood is changing with more working parents. In such a scenario, parents may spend less time with their children than before. Yet, the responsibility falls upon the parent to monitor a child and inculcate into them the values of the family. Simply put, both the government and parents should inculcate values into their children.

The problem may seem large but the solution is simple but not easy. To convince an entire generation not to act a certain way has its issues. Yet, this is the need of the hour.

My Wallet, My Choice.

0

It is consumers decision of what to buy or what not.

The purchase of a product is a simple commercial transaction between buyer and seller wherein the purchaser buys the product of choice, and the seller delivers the product or service in exchange for money. For example, a movie, a cab service, a restaurant, or a box of cornflakes are a simple product or a service accepted or rejected on consumer behavior.

If a product is not suitable, no one can force a consumer to buy it. For over five decades, General Motors world’s biggest corporation, came close to bankruptcy and had to be bailed out due to failure to adapt to consumer preference. You can see the result of Ford in India and the adaptation by Macdonald in offering a veg burger and no beef products in the Indian market.

When Comedians attack Indic Sentiments, the movies disrespect and make fun of Indic religions. When wokes start giving a selective lecture on Hindu festivals, these are information warfare to destroy Indic cultures and have to be treated as such. These actions make the product or service unsuitable for Indic consumers. For much too long, much too many people have got away with it. The attacks today are sophisticated and not always by guns or swords like in earlier periods.

A crucial part of this information warfare is to present incorrect and whitewashed history. Another critical factor is to attack traditions and take away the joy attached or hijack the practices. An example is the morphing of the Roman feast of Saturnalia.

Hindus are under unfair attack for their festivals. Banning crackers and fireworks, calling Kanyadan, Kanyaman, and disrespecting Mangal sutra, making fun of Gods and Goddesses. The incidents are much too numerous.

These are getting to be simply too many to be ignored or laughed at. The only way to stop this sustained attack is by speaking with our collective wallets. The economic cost must be so high that a movie that makes fun of Indic religions flops, a product that makes fun, does not sell. A company that does this loses its sales so much that it has to shut shop. When we do not hurt others, why hurt us? We must learn to impose an economic cost on the offender, and our choice is our right.

Let no one tell us this is economic terrorism. It is not. A product is to be bought or not to be bought is a consumer’s right. If the seller or seller’s product offends the purchaser, you cannot force a purchase.

Not buying a product is a consumer right. It is her money, after all.

People of Indic faiths have not been appreciative of their economic power.

But they have the power, and it is time they exercise it or stay a punching bag forever.

The campaign by Shefali Vaidyaji and its impact is there for all to see. Let this not be wasted and become a movement. She has started a fire that must be carried forward by each and every one of Indic faith.

Even in the United States, where Hindus are barely 2% of the population, special promotions for Deepawali and recognition by stores like Target, Costco, Etsy, and BJ’s make every Hindu cognizant of their ability to influence policy. The retailers in the US recognize economic power and have ears to the ground.Brands/Stores in India need to learn they cannot get away by disrespecting or hurting Indic sentiments.

Let us decide this Deepawali that no one rides rough over our sentiments and feelings anymore. If you want our money, do as we wish. But, if you do not respect us, we do not patronize you. Period.

0

Sustainable tree plantation and afforestation

0
Special on COP 26

Abstract

Forests are one of the greatest natural resources on this planet. But our attitude towards them is not friendly. Our greed and callousness have led to deforestation and degradation of vegetation. Tree plantation and afforestation are the only solutions to protect the human race from annihilation. However, it is effective when holistic approaches are adopted. In this article, an attempt is made to highlight the importance of natural forests. It is also argued that plantation and afforestation programs must address the issues of pollution, forest fire, and generation of employment in rural areas.

Introduction

Forests are one of the Earth’s greatest natural resources. Trees are the manifestation of life, and forests are essential for the existence of all animals, birds, reptiles and insects on the planet. It is known that trees and forests generate oxygen and eliminate many toxic gases from the atmosphere. However, it is not commonly known that an ordinary person consumes 740 kg of oxygen in a year, roughly equivalent to oxygen generated by 7-8 sycamore (goolar) trees.

Besides producing oxygen, trees and forests also provide us with the other essential component of life, i.e., water.  Trees and forests are also effective natural cooling systems. They regulate the precipitation and resultantly the rain patterns. Oceans and forests are the major sinks of carbon, and they keep control of global warming. Forests act as a natural barrier during floods, landslides, avalanches, and sand storms. Mangrove forests reduce the wind speed and protect the coastal areas from the devastating effects of cyclones. Forests are also homes to 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity [1].

Environment awareness is inbuilt in human beings. Nature has always been adored in ancient Indian tradition [2]. The importance of the environment for the existence of humans and the universe is well emphasized in Vedic literature [3]. Sri Ram, Sri Krishna and Lord Shiva have always endorsed the protection of the environment.

As explained, forests and trees are a vital part of our lives in more ways than we can imagine and they are our best friends. But our attitude towards them is not friendly. Our greed and callousness are responsible for the deforestation and the degradation of vegetation on this planet. Between 1990 and 2015, the world lost around 129 million hectares of forest, an area equivalent to the size of South Africa [4]. Trees and forests need our immediate attention to protect the human race from annihilation. The one-stop solution to most of our environmental problems is large scale tree plantation and afforestation, and we cannot delay it anymore. It may be noted that a developed society requires more forests and forest products to support the modern lifestyle.

Based on satellite data analysis, India has recorded a 1% jump (8,021 square km) in overall forest area and tree cover between 2015 and 2017 despite population and livestock pressures [5]. However, the green footprint in the northeast region shrunk by 630 square km. The independent experts say that the report “masks ground realities” of forest status by including commercial plantations etc. under its ambit.

Holistic approaches

The issue of degrading the environment is indeed a global concern, and governments and NGOs are in action to patch up the damage, through tree plantation and afforestation. However, what they lack is a holistic approach. It may be noted that the lack of a holistic approach and a desire to achieve short-term gain may be counterproductive. Any plantation and afforestation programme must focus on the following points:

1. Plantation of indigenous species

Replication of original environmental conditions is of first and foremost importance. Some of the following methodologies may help to restore the same:

·  It is desirable to plant indigenous species of trees, shrubs, herbs etc. It is vital for healthy biodiversity and human well-being as well as to support wildlife [6]. The same approach is desirable in a degraded forest. It is also advisable to import soil from a nearby natural forest as it may restore vegetation as well as the biology of the soil. Such action may also attract wildlife. It is worth mentioning that most of the exotic, non-native species have both direct and indirect damaging effects on the ecosystem and biodiversity.

·  It is also advisable to dig ponds and rejuvenate water bodies inside the forests and around plantation sites to prevent depletion of the water table. This can restore ecosystems, enhance vegetation and provide water to the wildlife especially during dry seasons.

·  The soil test is essential to evaluate the chemistry of the soil, ascertain the extent of damage due to human interference and adopt a suitable plantation strategy. In any plantation programme, even if done for commercial purposes, 25% of the area indispensably be developed as a natural forest. It may keep an option open to restore the natural forest in future. On the other hand, a conscious 10 to 20% vegetation of medicinal value and of direct commercial use may be planted in the natural forest. All possible attempts must be adopted to densify forests and vegetate barren lands.

2. Air pollution

Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, halogen-containing gases, ozone and water vapour are accountable for the greenhouse effect.

·  Fossil fuel combustion and the cement industries are responsible for more than 75% of human-caused CO2 emissions. Deforestation, changing agricultural practices etc. are responsible for the rest of the emissions. Effective monitoring mechanism needs to be practised to assess the damage and to develop controlling mechanisms. Urban pollution can be handled successfully by suitable plantation schemes and afforestation in and around industrial settlements.

·  Carbon dioxide and water vapour, the two major greenhouse gases, can be controlled effectively by tree plantation. Studies have shown that about 1 million trees can offset 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Bamboo, banyan, pipal, neem, and other indigenous species are effective CO2-suckers. Spruces, pines, and firs are exceptionally effective in absorbing methane, a pollutant about 25 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. It is reported that shirish, bel, jhau, bakul, kadam, palas, neem, etc. are very effective to reduce urban pollution [7]

3. Soil erosion

Wind and rain are two of the main forces that erode bare soil. Soil loss per hectare in agricultural land is five to ten times more than in forests. Every year, India loses about 5.3 billion tons of precious soil. About 25% of the total area of India (equivalent to 822,000 sq. km) is facing desertification. Another 40% area (1.31 million sq. km) is facing runoff water erosion. Almost 20% of this is under severe erosion and 10% of this land is facing extreme erosion. Tree and vegetation cover plays an important role in reversing soil erosion [8]. The leaves and branches of trees create a flexible cushion that reduces the forces of wind and rain over a large area. The vegetation roots prevent soil compaction, essential for the growth of vegetation. Deep-rooted trees recharge the groundwater and are effective in minimising soil erosion from surface water runoff and flooding. Tree roots tend to grow more deeply and provide resistance to erosion on hillsides and are far more effective than grasses and other small plants.

4. Water pollution

Forests play a critical role in providing clean water. They improve the quantity and quality of water. The world is losing watersheds rapidly, and the scenario is critical in India too. Deforestation in the watersheds contaminates water and leads to higher water treatment costs. In many cases, industries pollute water bodies. The wastewater from industries not only pollutes the water stream but also pollutes the soil and groundwater.  The first and foremost step is to take suitable actions to stop it. To a certain extent, suitable vegetation can overcome this problem.

5. Forest fire

Nowadays, forest fires have become very frequent [9]. It can be avoided by following these simple and time-proven methods:

·  Controlled burning, also known as hazard reduction burning, before the onset of summer, is a technique effective to prevent major forest fires in dry seasons. This reveals soil layers, results in enhanced seedling vitality and stimulates germination of desirable forest vegetation, thereby renewing the forest.

·  The recent trend of monoculture tree plantation is responsible for forest fires. The mixed culture plantation of indigenous species is essential to reduce forest fires.

·  The use of dynamites and explosives damages the small and natural water reservoirs. Their frequent use also destabilises rocks and slopes causing landslides. Therefore, the use of explosives in the forests and hills/mountains needs to be avoided.

·  Any afforestation programme needs to be coupled with the development and rejuvenation of water bodies. These water bodies act as fire barriers and may prevent the spread of forest fire. As mentioned, this is also required to support wildlife.

6. Herbal tree plantation

There is an awakening all over the world to turn back to health care using herbs, shrubs, and tree products/ parts. Ayurvedic science is an affordable and effective way to cater to this requirement. Continues supply of raw materials is necessary to fulfil the demand for manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines. In the recent past, the exploitation of herbs from the forest has resulted in the degradation of forests and ecological imbalance. As a result, national manufactures are depending on the import of herbs, shrubs, etc. to fulfil their requirements of raw materials. A conscious medicinal plantation within the forest and buffer zone may reduce our dependence on imports.

7. Employment scope

In India, it has been observed that wherever there is a large forest, there is the segregation of tribal and rural populations. Vast populations of tribal and rural people depend on forest resources for their livelihoods. It is also a fact that the forests are also a way of their social and cultural lives. The tree plantation, their protection and maintenance, and forest product harvesting are labour intensive. Harvesting of the forest products, post-harvest processing neither requires skilled manpower nor expensive machinery. The rural population can be engaged effectively in these activities and provide employments to the underemployed villagers. It is also recommended to process the raw herbs and forest products at the harvesting site and villages. This is likely to generate employment in villages, reduce transportation costs and minimise pollution around the main production plants. To protect the interest of villagers, the manufacturers may directly deal with cooperative societies of the villages, without the involvement of middlemen.

It is a gospel that tree plantation and natural forest preservation are necessary to protect life on the planet.
