Tharoor vs Kharge; South India wins

0

By Malavika Jayadeep

In a divisive country that has since time immemorial prided itself on being a land that is rooted in multiplicity, there have been multiple attempts in recent times to assimilate all of India’s diversities into one largely governable identity that caters specifically to the upper caste Hindu Hindi speaking populace. In this idea of gradual assimilation and exclusion of any community that challenges this narrative, what does it mean to have a south Indian that defies this narrative as the head of the Indian National Congress?

In a country where south Indians comprise only around 19% of India’s population but play a crucial role in the overall ideation of India, it is important for there to be representation in major national parties in order to make inroads in the southern parts of India. Since the majority of south Indian parties are more region-specific and do not transcend beyond borders, it is of utmost importance for national parties to include representation from all sects in order to gain relevance in these states. Apart from Karnataka, national parties have not been able to make major inroads in the state due to the lack of personal connection with the people.

Narasimha Rao, known for his economic reforms that greatly benefitted India, was a former prime minister from Andhra Pradesh who completed a full term. Even in his case, it can be argued that the real power still lay in the hands of the Nehru-Gandhi family, who tried to sideline Narasimha Rao and usurp his position for Rajiv gandhi.

We can see in the case of Narasimha Rao and Deve Gowda, that a south Indian gets the opportunity to become the head of the state only in the case of a coalition government where national parties are unable to reach the magic number of 272 seats. It can be argued that in the case of a coalition government, parties pick out southern candidates who are not as prominent and who will not disturb the power balances that remain in check in the northern blocs. When there are chances of a major disruption in the selection of a candidate, a non- threatening south Indian is often chosen to maintain the harmony of the political party.

In the case of the congress presidential elections, it can be debated whether the power actually shifts from the Gandhi family or if these candidates will be instated as puppets. The fact of the matter is that both Shashi Tharoor, hailing from the state of Kerala and Mallikarjun Kharge, from Karnataka are representatives from South India.

This representation is multifaceted since it goes in more ways than one; in getting a president from South India and facilitating representation for the people ‘down south’, it may not sit well with the rest as the key component of politics is the ability of being able to connect with people. With such a big language divide, how will the next president of the congress be able to connect with people throughout the length and breadth of India?

Consolidating the entirety of India under one language is an impossible task, one that all political leaders of national parties have to take into account. One of the major reason behind a lot of national political leaders finding it difficult to make inroads in the South, has mainly been due to the language divide that makes it very hard, nay, impossible to carve a niche for themselves in that space.

In certain parts of South India, like Tamil Nadu there is a resentment or sometimes even hostility towards Hindi due to the anti-Hindi agitations and the Self- Respect Movement led by Periyar in which a lot of people lost their lives. This results in the inability to connect with a Hindi- speaking political leader. Now that there is South Indian representation, there may be higher chances of the congress being able to make better progress in the Southern states of India.

All said and done, representation is of utmost importance in the sphere of politics as people can only resonate with leaders who think like them, look like them or speak like them and a strong attempt must be made to include all Indians in all of its multiplicity into the manifold of national politics.

After Pakistan, Ukraine is the new playground for the US; here is how the future looks like

0

There hasn’t been a day passing by for past few months when I don’t hear someone talking about war in Ukraine. Or rather, how Ukraine is pushing back the Russian forces and inching towards a winning a war. I visit news portals, not one but several, including one of the most trusted news sources here in the UK, the BBC, to get the latest updates and they all are singing the same lyrics. Maybe they were getting paid for singing. For example, the government in the UK awarded £4.1 million to BBC to counter “propaganda and fake news“, which in simple terms means BBC is not showing what actually is happening on the ground but is blatantly promoting a narrative chosen by the masters who are paying them. I had in the past written a few articles about BBC’s propaganda in its coverage of Indian affair.

Have a read: Dark truth behind BBC’s narrative on Liquor consumption in India and Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing forgets the clothing: BBC’s report on Fake News reveals more than expected

But this is not just about BBC, its about the bias, prejudices and ignorance that the people in the UK or Europe carry about my side of the world, i.e. east of Europe.

Cold war, a war between the two powers (Soviet Union and the USA) was cold for the west, but it was bloody hot for my part of the world. A country, Afghanistan was entirely torn apart, and ripped in pieces by this cold war only because the so-called proxy wars and military operations took place on its land. The US in that case had set up its base in Pakistan. And for that matter, Pakistan has paid dearly for letting the US use the country as a base to fight a war that neither Soviet nor Americans could win. But did Afghanistan really win? If that’s what victory looks like, no country would want to win ever again!

The United States invested millions and billions in Pakistan in the form of Military aid and otherwise to fight Soviets. Below is a chart showing the investment over the years ever since it got its independence.

Worth noting from the chart is that major armed conflicts with India always followed the time spans with heavy investments. Military assistance from 1954 to 1964 was followed by a major India Pakistan war in 1965. Major assistance from 1982 to 1990 lead to one of the largest genocide and exodus of Kashmiri Hindus by the Pakistan sponsored militants. Pakistan’s bleed India by thousand cuts was the doctrine in play. Western countries lead by the US were lending military assistance to a military dictated state that was not even a democracies, shame for those countries who claim to be fighting for a cause to support democracies of the world.

What is different in case of Ukraine?

There is absolutely nothing different. Its exactly the same, point by point. The only difference is that Ukraine is playing the part of both Afghanistan by fighting a war on its own land and at the same time playing the part of Pakistan by allowing countries to set up their camps. Ukraine is the new playground for the US. The US is by far the biggest stake holder in this conflict. Have a look:

Moreover, the military aid is not just this year, it has been building up for almost a decade now, exactly like the aid to Pakistan. Military aid to Ukraine since 2013:

Since, the US still do not have its boots on ground in Ukraine, which was the very definition of the term “cold war”, still stands true. This is just another proxy war between the US and Russia, however, its in Europe this time, so the lives matter, the pain is real, and the blood is red.

The result will also not be any different then what happened to Pakistan and Afghanistan. The only country with a bigger begging bowl than Pakistan today is Ukraine. In this day and age a country’s sovereignty is threatened less by military invasion, but more by economics and data. China is occupying countries, lands, ports without throwing even a single stone; just by lending money. Pakistan and Ukraine both waged wars which they know for sure that they can’t win by themselves, they would beg for both the weapons and money from the rest of the world.

There won’t be a clean victory for any side unlike World War II, unless Nukes are used; which is very unlikely as of today. And in this case it won’t even matter who wins, Ukraine loses and its neighbors too (not just energy crisis and high inflation). Millions would be displaced, demographics would be altered, middle class and above would move out of Ukraine to countries with brighter prospects. You could find Pakistan’s rich and wealthy in abundance in the UK and Canada but not in Pakistan, that’s why it is next to impossible to rebuild that nation. Won’t be any different in Ukraine.

What do you think would happen to the countless weapons that are being sent to Ukraine to fight Russia? They would not just disappear. Sooner or later, the US would go back, rest of Europe would have a brand new problem to tackle: militancy. Of course, there would be new terms invented on the lines of Good Taliban and Bad Taliban, till Good Taliban reaches the US again. And the cycle continues.

At least US would still keep its hypocrisy alive by continuing enforcing the Monroe Doctrine, according to which any country other than the Americas setting up military camp in the western hemisphere would be seen as waging a war against the United States of Americas. However, the USA can set up camp on the border of Russia and if it complains Putin is crazy. Cuban Missile Crisis was an excellent example for this. In 1960s the US installed its Jupiter Ballistic Missiles in Italy and Turkey and responding to this Soviet installed its in Cuba. That one instance lead to world coming closer to a nuclear for no good reason. Monroe Doctrine and NATO/EU Expansion towards Russian Border can go hand in hand only when Russia ceases to exist. Russia is responding in exactly the same way as the US does in its neighborhood.

English Media houses are playing their part in making a sensitive situations even worse. Countries are reeling under peer pressure to provide military assistance to Ukraine. For instance BBC promotes things like

If France wants to lead Europe to a new era of military self-reliance, how come its contribution to the war effort in Ukraine is so small?

That is the awkward question being posed by some of the country’s top strategic thinkers, who are pushing President Emmanuel Macron to make an urgent decision on more arms to Kyiv.

That’s a clear case of war mongering. The intention here is not a ceasefire, but defeat Russia; whatever the cost.

A controlled nuclear strike would start looking feasible and a viable action as soon as media succeeds in convincing the larger audience that its for the greater good. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are justified strikes today. Aren’t they? For the greater good!!

I am not a fan of Communist Regime, my previous 150+ articles are a testimonial for that, but I am also not a fan of a super power concept.

Balance of Power is the very need of the hour. In today’s scenario, the US with its whooping $20 Trillion GDP, is miles ahead of any other country. Russia with its less than $2 Trillion GDP is ten times weaker. This is the very recipe of a disaster.

By the way, China with its $15 trillion GDP is a little too quiet so far. The country hasn’t yet stepped in the war alongside Russia. What is the country waiting for? Please follow my blog to know some of the answers for such questions.

New book tackles global Hinduphobia & anti-Hindu ecosystems, advocates need for right-wing Hindu resurgence

0

A new book by TIME magazine featured Author and Political Commentator Saurav Dutt entitled ‘Modi & Me: A Political Reawakening’ uncompromisingly explores the growing global movement of Hinduphobia and makes a compelling case for a reassertion of dharmic and Indic values by the global Hindu diaspora to combat attacks on Hindu culture, religion and civilization.

Indian born British Author Saurav Dutt has penned ‘Modi & Me: A Political Reawakening’ an unflinching book that deals with the reasons behind the rising surge of Hinduphobia across media, academia, culture and politics across the world. Dutt maps the energy behind the movement-a denigration and distortion of Hindu values, history and culture-alongside the meteoric rise of Narendra Modi and the BJP since Modi’s ascent to the Indian premiership in 2014.

Dutt describes how he was relatively nonchalant about Indian politics and Hindu culture prior to Modi’s rise but became incredibly troubled by the rising wave of Hinduphobia that possessed the liberal left across both the Indian subcontinent and the West, both working hand in glove to paint India as a rising Hindu fascist nation and that Modi had seemingly emboldened cow vigilante groups, demonized Muslims, rewrote the nation’s texts to glorify Hindus at the expense of Abrahamic and Islamic faiths. Dutt maintains in his book that all these are falsifications as part of a concerted attack against Hindu primacy and a resurgent nation that has emerged from under decades of Congress led corruption and self-flagellation.

“It has become open season against Hindus,” Dutt said on the release of the book “since 2014 it has become a sin to be proud of one’s Hindu faith and India’s place in the world. Indian left-wing ecosystems, well-funded ‘toolkits’, Western supremacist narratives, have all been deployed to depict Narendra Modi as ‘the brown Hitler’ and all his followers as ‘Bhakts’ or crazy religious zealots. It is time to embrace the fact that Hindus can be proud of who they are and where they’ve come from and that Modi’s rise to power is a major part in imbuing that sense of self and worth to a previously rudderless and confused Indian whose mind had been colonised.”

Dutt is aware the book may upset many but felt compelled to write it after speaking to Hindu NRIs, thought leaders, think tanks, NGOs, lobby groups, politicians, and Hindus like himself who have felt increasingly isolated by a tidal wave of hatred directed against Hindu polity, practice, worship, culture, religion, and which has depicted them all as Hindu supremacists.

“The fact of the matter is that there are vested interests that wish Hindus harm, not just physical harm, but harm to their pride, authority, place in society, and to eviscerate the pride and strength they have gained from a resurgent India under Modi,” Dutt added “the louder Hindus proclaim their rights and their demand to be heard, the louder are the voices from Islamists and Abrahamic opponents that remain committed to shut them down at every turn.”

Dutt charts the growth of Hinduphobia beyond Indian territories to the West, particularly America and the United Kingdom, as well as offering guidance to those who like him were on the fence and unsure of their place in the modern world as an Indian and as a Hindu. He hopes Modi & Me: A Political Reawakening will “reawake their inner spirit and strength to help Hindus realise when they are under attack and why they must fight back against doctrinal hate.”

The fraud of Islamic conquest of Sindh

Muhammad Ali Jinnah and many other Islamists felt/feel proud by claiming that the seed of Islamic Pakistan in Indian subcontinent was sown in AD 712 with the conquest of Sindh by Muhammad bin Qasim, the Muslim Arab general of Umayyad Caliphate. Jinnah even said “Sindh is the gateway of Islam in India”. Qasim is said to have defeated Hindu Brahmin Raja Dahir of Sindh and killed him in the war.

But was that a real conquest of Sindh? Was Muhammad bin Qasim a Muslim? We don’t have any proof or record from early eighth century to answer these questions in positive way. Qasim being credited to convert many Hindus to Islam and his imposition of Zijiya on Hindus were gross lies. Islam, as we know it today, did not exist then. Qasim must have persecuted the local Hindus and collected extortion money from them.

The present standard narrative about ‘Sindh conquest of Qasim’ has come from a Persian book titled Chachnama written as late as in 13th century, that is, six centuries after Qasim, by one Ali Kufi from Persia who settled in Uch area of Sindh. Though Kufi claimed to have translated his book from some early Arabic book, no such Arabic book was found. It was but natural that Ali Kufi’s Chachnama would be heavily biased towards Qasim and Islam.

Five hundred years before Ali Kufi settled in Sindh in 13th century, Islam got formalized in the Arab Empire under Abbasid Caliphate that extended up to Afghanistan East-ward. Consequently, Afghan Muslim invaders Mohammad Ghaznavi and Muhammmad Ghori had invaded and devastated major parts of North-West Indian subcontinent during 11th and 12th centuries. Their invasions were directed towards plunder and spread of Islam. Many Hindu temples were destroyed; tens of thousands of Hindus were killed, converted to Islam and also taken to the market of Afghanistan and Central Asia as slaves/sex slaves.

It is found that some Arab, Persian, Afghan and Turkic Muslims had settled in present day Pakistan, Indian Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh of India by the 13th century. In all probability, Chachnama was a Persian book of imagination about Islamic conquest of Sindh to glorify Islam. It was written when Islam and Islamic culture had established its foothold in North-West part of Indian subcontinent.

Cleaning the cobweb of Islamic eulogies about Qasim and his ‘Islamic conquest’ of Sindh, it is seen that Arabs, under Muhammad bin Qasim, invaded and plundered some parts of Sindh in AD 712. The presence of Arabs as tormenters of Sindh was recorded up to AD 861. There after there was no mention of Arabs presence in Sindh. While Buddhist-Hindu Afghanistan was falling gradually to Arab onslaughts from AD 642, there was no further expansion of Arab territory in Sindh and to other parts of India Eastward after AD 712.

All efforts of Arab expansion from Sindh towards East were resisted successfully by the Hindu kings like Nagabhata-I, Bappa Rawal, Pulakesiraja, Lalitaditya, Vikramaditya-II and Yashovarman et al. Then between eleventh and twelfth century, two Afghan Muslim invaders attacked and devasted many areas of present-day Pakistan and North India. They were Mohammad Ghaznavi and Muhammad Ghori.

Thus, there was actually a virtual lull for about 500 years between Arab general Qasim’s attack on Sindh in AD 712 and establishment of Delhi Sultanate in AD 1206. Modern day making of hero out of Qasim or demon out of Raja Dahir are the works of imagination only. Qasim, in no way, made the first Islamic conquest of Sindh. It was a temporary Arab intrusion in Sindh only.

On the other hand, Muhammad bin Qasim was no Muslim. He was an Arab warrior. His Islamic identity was created six hundred years after him. There is no historical evidence that Umayyad Caliphate practiced Islam. We don’t have any historical proof of early eighth century which could tell about ‘Islam’, ‘Muhammad’ and ‘Muslim’.

Some people even claim that Umayyad were Christians. The five pillars of Islam were formalized in Sahih Hadeeth about 150 years after Qasim in mid-ninth century by the Persian Islamic scholar Muhammad al-Bukhari in modern day Uzbekistan. Islamic ideology, practices and laws were also formulated around that time. Actually Mohammad Ghaznavi, 300 years after Qasim, was the first ‘Muslim’ invader of India.

In the same way Persia (Iran) is falsely claimed to be conquered by Rashidun Islamic Caliphate in mid-seventh century. No authentic reference to Rashidun Caliphate and Islam of that time is available. As late as in AD 930, a rule was first enforced by the Abbasid Caliphate that demanded all bureaucrats of the empire were to be Muslim. During that period of Abbasid Caliphate, a shift was made in political context from that of ‘Arab Empire’ to one of ‘Muslim Empire’ (Muslim Ummah).

The historian Al-Masudi, a Baghdad-born Arab, who wrote a comprehensive treatise on history and geography of Persia in about AD 956, observed that after the Arab conquest, Zoroastrianism continued to exist in many parts of Persia. So, in all probability complete Islamization of Persia was done, at the earliest, in late 10th century. Similarly, complete Islamization of Afghanistan and Central Asian countries did not occur before 10th century.

From the above-mentioned facts it can be said that Indian subcontinent resisted Arab and the Islamic onslaughts for 300 years more than Persia and Afghanistan. Even after that also, unlike Persia and Afghanistan, Islam could never run-over Hindu India in next 700 years of its rule in the major part of the country. In AD 1757 British East India Company put an end to Islamic rule of India. The hype in Pakistan and among a section of Indian Muslims about first Islamic conquest of Sindh (India) in AD 712 by Muhammad bin Qasim is false, wishful and fraudulent.

The faceless and dangerous ‘deep state’

A ‘deep state’ is an informal cabal for influencing and manipulating the governance or society of a country. It is made up of unauthorised networks of influencers, operating independent of country’s political leadership, in pursuit of the fulfilment of the cabal’s own agenda and goals. The cabal of deep state includes members from bureaucracy, army, intelligence agencies, drug mafia, opposition political parties, industrialists, criminals, businessmen, judiciary, bankers, academia, media, activists, NGOs, religious bigots and many other entities.

The cabal is not organised like any corporate house. It is a loose conglomeration of common vested interests. The different entities of the ‘deep state’ do not come in the open unitedly, but they know each other’s responsibilities to achieve their common goal. They influence the working of ruling system of a country or its social dynamics and try to compel the country or society to act in a particular way. Immorality, sadism and greed of power and money are the main driving forces of a ‘deep state’.

In countries under dictatorship, nothing can be done without approval of the Dictator. Thus, deep state is the unwanted child of democracy. Democratic countries allow dissents, protests and oppositions of their workings and policy decisions or social activities by the citizens. Deep state uses those attributes of democratic countries to its advantage. Deep state can make certain group of citizens rebellious and violent against the country on some issues. Religious tolerance and relative freedom of media in democratic countries also allow the deep state with additional elbow room to manoeuvre.

A deep state of a country may not always be limited within that country. A country can have deep state at international level working against it. A deep state roughly has three parts, namely, resource providers, intellectual justifiers and foot soldiers. From the names, one can easily know what is the role of each part. There are some foot soldiers, who may incidentally be sucked into deep state.

In case of India, we have seen “Godhra carnage”, “26/11 Mumbai Jihadi attack”, “Tukde Tukde Gang”, “Award Wapsy Gang”, “anti-CAA agitation”, “Delhi riots”, “Farmers’ protest”, “Selective outrage”, “Selective silence”, “anti-Army discourse” and “anti-national activities of PFI” etc. We have some names also like, Soros, Ford Foundation, Twitter, ISI, CCCP, Amartya Sen, D-Company, Nivedita Menon, Kapil Sibal, Teesta Setalvad, Arundhati Roy, Harvard University, BBC, Rana Ayyub, NDTV, Audrey Truschke, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Pratik Sinha and Ravish Kumar et al. Rest is left to your interest to join the dots.

Besides major events, deep state is engaged in a daily way also. One recent example is BBC Hindi’s shaming of Hindus. As per ‘BBC Hindi’, pre-Diwali house-cleaning is a Brahminical patriarchal torture on Hindu women. And the latest one is Congress leader Shivraj Patil’s statement equating Dharm-yuddh of Mahabharat with Jihad. Many a times the deep state uses Social Engineering Toolkits to achieve its objective via cyber world. Deep state can go up to any impossible and un-imaginable extent to push its agendas.

Why India deserves a permanent UNSC seat

After the first World War, the League of Nations was established in January 1920 with the Treaty of Versailles. But the Second World War led to the death of the League. A second attempt to unite the world for peace was made with the United Nations. Formed on the 24th of October, 1945, the United Nations was a beacon of hope for the post world war geopolitics. Due to the burden of two great wars, the colonial empires of Great Britain and France were falling. Now was when the imagination of an egalitarian world could have been achieved. United Nations was presented as a pathway to that world.

According to article one of chapter one of the Charter of the United Nations –

“To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, and to take other appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace.”

Article two of the Charter states –

“The Organization is based on the principle of the sovereign equality of all its members.”

After seventy-seven years of adoption of this charter, we now need to question, is the UN that much egalitarian as it is supposed to be. The United Nations Security Council is a vital and imperative organ of the UN. Ensuring international peace and security, recommendations for the admission of new UN members in the General Assembly and approving changes to the UN Charter, peacekeeping operations, international sanctions, and military actions are under the jurisdiction of the UNSC. It will not be wrong to state that if the UN is a body, UNSC is its heart. But why a few nations have curbed the UN’s heart?

UN was instituted in the aftermath of the Second World War. The allied powers emerged victorious in the bloody war. The United States of America, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, France, and China bagged permanent seats in the UNSC on the merit of being the victors of WW2. After the dissolution of the USSR, its seat was taken by the Russian Federation in 1991. The equation at the helm of the international community remained static.

We need to ask ourselves and the world, why these countries deserve to be on the UNSC. Let us take them one by one. The United States of America is arguably the sole superpower of the post-cold war era. But what has been its contribution towards international peace? The USA invaded Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam killing millions and leaving even more homeless. Much of the instability of the middle east can be attributed to the so-called “Land of the free, home of the brave.”

Next are the great colonial powers of modern history, or maybe we can put it simply as “The band of seafarer burglars.” What is the contribution of the United Kingdom and France to the progress of the world? They spent centuries draining the Asian, African and Latin American countries of resources and wealth, and even their cultures in some cases. They do not represent humanity or international peace. They are the representative of the history of bloodshed, misery, loot, and persecution for the sake of filling the treasury and tummies of white landlords in Europe.

Russia and China are more or less of the same breed. China’s cryptic practices of economic traps to poor nations of Africa and Asia are not unknown to anybody. China is suppressing democracy, and freedom of speech and is persecuting Uyghur Muslims in their nation. Russia, on the other hand, has invaded Ukraine, and shown reckless behaviour despite being a permanent member of the UNSC. Russia’s actions have created a whole turmoil for the world, causing problems ranging from oil price rise, and scarcity of foodgrains to the possibility of a deadly nuclear war.

So, we can conclude that none of the current permanent members of the UNSC is there because of their record of human rights protection or their attempts of ensuring international peace. They are just there because they are rich and maintain a strong army. If money and guns are the basis of deciding who will lead, then how come we can say that we are living in a modern era and not a medieval one?

So, who deserves to be onboarded with the UNSC? Well, speaking truly, there are a lot of contenders. Germany, Brazil, Japan and even South Africa are pitching for a permanent seat at the Security Council. But one contender is obvious and most powerful. The Republic of India is the largest democracy on the face of the earth. More than sixty crore votes were cast during the general elections of 2019. In its 75 years of independent history, India always remained a democracy.

Democracy is not the only merit of India. India is the 2nd largest population in the world. 17.5% of the world’s population lives in India alone. India is also a major military power. Global Fire Power Index ranked India 4th out of 142 nations in 2022. India is among the largest contributors to the UN Peacekeeping forces. Recently, India became the 5th largest economy in the world surpassing Britain. India is the fastest-growing economy and fastest-emerging regional power in geopolitics.

India’s contribution to the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, whether in the face of vaccines or food grain supplies, is not unknown to the international community. India is the only large nation, which maintains close ties with both the United States and Russia and hence can be crucial for the maintenance of world peace. Also, India can be a safe bid for the West, to counter the rising Chinese dominance and aggression.

India, the oldest civilization, and the youngest nation on the face of the earth deserve the right spot and role in the international community. India needs to be given what is due for 75 years. If India is not given a permanent seat in the Security Council, yes, it is some loss to India, but it is a larger loss for the United Nations. If the UN wants to maintain its relevance in the 21st century, then it needs to be more inclusive and open. And only then it will reflect its name, getting the nations united.

Knowing Brahmanism

0

Brahmanism is an ideology and a way of life, originating from the history of the Vedas, often called a philosophy, practiced based on specific inferred beliefs. Brahmanism’s fundamental and principle belief defines Brahman and its attributeless element that was first captured by the Rishis who compiled the Vedas. “That which existed before creation, that which constitutes the existent whole, and that into which all creation dissolves are the all-pervading Brahman, and the cycle of creation, sustenance, and destruction of the universe is endless.” (Kena Upanishad)

Brahman, the Universal Intellect

The Vedic era thrived from 1500 BCE to 500 BCE on the northern sides of the Indian Sub-continent on both sides of the Indus river. The Indus valley was civilized by the Aryans – the ‘noble‘ ones – who worshipped nature. The Vedas originally believed in the concept of Sanatana Dharma (eternal order of life) where nature was worshipped with rituals and praise, which supposedly forms a significant part of the Vedas. The Vedas originated the ideology of Brahman, which became the central theme of those following the Vedas and its principles.

That which cannot be expressed by speech, but by which speech is expressed — That alone is known as Brahman and not that which people here worship.

That which cannot be apprehended by the mind, but by which, they say, the mind is apprehended — That alone is known as Brahman and not that which people here worship.

That which cannot be perceived by the eye, but by which the eye is perceived — That alone is known as Brahman and not that which people here worship.

That which cannot be heard by the ear, but by which the hearing is perceived — That alone is known as Brahman and not that which people here worship. (Kena Upanishad)

Brahman is the Ultimate Reality, the Universal Intellect that is endless, without beginning, middle, and end is a metaphysical concept that forms the basis of Brahmanism. Brahmanism is considered to be the predecessor of Hinduism. Brahmanism is the central theme and belief of Vedic followers, its thoughts and philosophical concept giving rise to the primary and socio-religious belief and conduct in Hinduism.

Since the inference and perception of Brahman were put forward by the Rishis, the ones who later became staunch followers of Brahmanism, they were considered, according to some, to be of the priestly caste and were called Brahmans. They duplicated the ideology through teachings and performance of rituals, and thus Brahmanism came to be practiced with vigor and unwavering determination. Brahmanism, as some researchers claim, is also said to have got its name from the Brahmans, who performed the Vedic rituals. Moreover, a Brahman priest is one who is always engrossed in the thoughts of the eternal Brahman. Brahmanism, nevertheless, remains the most sought-after ideology which baffles the interpretation abilities of the wisest preceptors and superior scholars and to this day remains an exhaustless mystery.

Core Concepts of Brahmanism

The core concepts of Brahmanism are significantly aligned with metaphysics, questioning what is actually real, the validity of time, of being, of consciousness, and the origin and basis of all existence. Many scholars, such as archaeologists, geologists, Indologists, and philologists, have taken refuge in the writings of the Vedas, especially in the concept of Brahman since it is directly related to humans and their origin.

Brahman as the all-pervading, all-eternal, and the prime cause of ‘all that moves and does not move’, forms a major acceptance in Brahmanism. It rests on the belief that everything that ever existed, that exists now, and that is going to exist is a minuscule event in the all eternal universal reality, called Brahman. The Atman – the soul – forms the second most important concept in Brahmanism. The Atman is considered to be the source of all vitality among humans. The soul of a living being is considered to be self-same as Brahman itself, thus leading to the belief that a human who embodies the soul is no other than Brahman and has all the attributes of Brahman. The soul, thus identified to be identical with the Supreme Soul which pervades everything, forms a significant belief in Brahmanism. The Supreme Soul, which is never born yet is the reason for the birth of all, forms the underlying principle in Brahmanism, which expanded following the inference of Brahman.

One soul is considered as self-same with the Supreme Soul, which is nothing but Brahman. This belief shows the influence of Brahmanism on Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism. Hinduism today is regarded as nothing less than the progeny or an offshoot of Brahmanism, since Hindus got their name from the Indus river, on the banks of which, the Aryans practiced the Vedas. Hence, Hindus following the Vedas and its Brahman belief were seen as the first propellers of Hinduism.

Influence & Interpretations

Brahmanism’s famous but most ingrained influence is seen on Hinduism, in the sense and to the extent that Hindus do not distinguish between Brahmanism and Hinduism. Brahmins, a priestly caste made to practice the Vedic rituals are the carriers of the performance-based implementation of the ideology. They perform rituals and sacrifices described in the Vedas, including worship and praise of the forces of nature. Brahmanism today is a belief system well-researched among cosmologists trying to decipher the complexity of the universe and its likely origin

BRAHMANISM IS CONNECTED TO & CONCERNED WITH THE FORCES OF NATURE, THE ORIGIN OF HUMANKIND & THE INHERENT MYSTERY ASSOCIATED WITH EVERY CREATURE.

Buddhism and Jainism have been considered to be offshoots of Brahmanism in terms of its ideology and principle beliefs, but they have fine-tuned it to their own interpretations. One following Brahmanism is most likely to believe unquestionably in the concept of rebirth of humans because the soul embodied by the human flesh would soon take refuge in a new body, a new avatar, to accomplish its unfulfilled desires.

Buddhism does not believe in the concept of rebirth but has interpreted Brahmanism to the comfort that everything else is a nullity in the universe except Brahman alone exists and is eternal. Buddhists also defy and reject the belief of a human soul, stating that there is one undeniable living soul, and humans do not embody a soul but are full of suffering, constituting their impermanence. Likewise, Jainism adopts another interpretation of Brahmanism and places its reliance on the existence of soul, matter, time, space, dharma, and Adharma.

In contrast, Brahmanism believes in the oneness of all beings and of all elements, forming the entity of Brahman, which is without any property or attributes. Thus, Buddhism and Jainism, though considered as offshoots, have deviated from the principle belief of Brahmanism and formulated their own understanding.

Brahmanism has a much more intellectual appeal than other ideologies/religions as it is connected to and concerned with the forces of nature, the origin of humankind, and the inherent mystery associated with every creature. Vedanta is one of the most influential traditions or ideological forces that emerged from Brahmanism. It places its belief in non-duality and shuns everything that proposes the duality of existence, thus called Advaita (non-dualism).

Dvaita (dualism) in Vedanta, has also been influenced by Brahmanism and has a sect of followers. In addition, Yoga, a large and growing spiritual practice and discipline, has also been influenced by the philosophy of Brahmanism. Samkhya’s philosophy, relying on the three elements of perception, inference, and testimony from reliable scriptures to gain knowledge, has gained significant influence from Brahmanism regarding how knowledge is acquired and conduct is regulated.
