I liked the article you wrote on the missing children, dated July 2, 2021. I just wanted to say when I was in outpatient treatment we did a lot of different things for awareness. I remember we did an annual awareness walk for the children that went missing in the residential schools, we wore orange shirts and walked and smudged and drummed. It was a beautiful day to do an event like that. This took place in Bemidji, Mn. I would love to continue to do more walks and spread awareness throughout the U.S because what they did was very wrong and they should be punished for what they did to those children.
What people are feeling is what I feel reading these articles: anger, pain, resentment, hatred…a lot of feelings. I just wish we could do more to help and bring back happiness to the families that lost their loved ones in the residential schools. What I don’t understand is that people say burning churches is a “hate crime” and a “violent crime against the Catholic community”. What about what they did to the kids? Where were you when they were getting sexual abused? What about being beaten when they spoke the native language? Or when they were starved?
All of that was wrong, and people want to say that the churches being burned down is a crime against Catholic communities? What about the crimes of killing the indigenous children, there is a lot of crime there but no one wants to say anything about it. That is what I don’t understand, over 3,200 to 6,000 kids died or went missing and there is nothing being done about it. All we find are just a whole lot more graves and it’s going to keep continuing to go up.
I am very disturbed to know that some of my ancestors were in those schools and I can’t even ask questions about it because my family says, “it is a very tragic thing to discuss at your age”. Some of the girls and boys in those schools were sexually abused and beaten and the girls got pregnant from it and were forced to give up their babies and the babies were killed and people wonder why I have hate for the Catholic community.
I don’t attend church for these reasons, they talk about things like “violence is a sin”, “lying is a sin”, “you get punished for the bad crimes you do”, okay? So why ain’t you in prison being punished for your sins, the violence? Everything they did is very sinful and wrong and yet they want to call themselves a “Christian” or a “child of God” and than they keep going to church not knowing or maybe even caring that there could be a whole cemetery of indigenous children under them and they don’t even know it until the church gets burned and they dig up the land.
A few days ago, I came across an article by the journalist par excellence, Ms. Barkha Dutt.
“I am writing today about how extraordinarily difficult it is to be an independent journalist today in India,” she begins the article in The Washington Post.
I felt sad that someone who has dedicated her life to bringing out and reporting the truth, unbiasedly, for everyone — irrespective of their religion, profession, or nationality — is being treated like this.
“Instead of a compassionate compact between the citizen and the state, draconian high-handedness has become the norm rather than the exception,” she further adds.
Tell me something I don’t know. Fascist Modi — I do not understand why people vote for him.
OMG!! The article was almost one year old!! Has Barkha Dutt been in jail this last year?
Ms. Dutt continues about how a climate activist was arrested and granted bail ten days later, the judge reminding India: disagreeing with the state’s policies doesn’t make you a traitor.
I was surprised a judge had the power to grant bail under fascist Modi’s regime — maybe things are not so bad after all, I thought. But I was wrong.
Things start getting serious in the article— Ms. Dutt talks about a hateful video in circulation that calls for her hanging.
She says she reported on the murder of two Dalit girls in UP, and in reaction, the state police filed a criminal case against her and her team.
My heart bled reading these lines:
The two sections of the law that were cited could mean up to three years in prison. Our lawyers warn that it could allow police to seize our phones and computers.
The aim of the police is clear: to create fear and drag us into a legal vortex so we think twice before being critical.
What might have seemed entirely implausible a few years ago is now completely plausible, a week later, the prospect of going to jail is no longer academic.
My blood was boiling now.
Is Barkha Dutt in jail? Has she been arrested? When did this happen?
But a week later I received a shocking response.
WTF?!
Scratching my head, I double-checked the senders’ email address: it was from the verified Prime Ministers Office email address.
I noticed the date on the article, published on Feb 24, 2021. OMG!! The article was almost one year old!! Has Barkha Dutt been in jail this last year?
My heart was racing as I googled Barkha Dutt. Her Twitter account showed up — I heaved a sigh of relief to see she tweeted only a few hours ago.
She has not been arrested, her computers have not been taken away, her Twitter account is still active, and she is still critical of fascist Modi.
I thanked God.
But I was still enraged at this treatment of her at the hands of the Modi government.
How could they do this to Barkha Dutt? To the Emmy Nominated BARKHA DUTT, who has spent her entire youth on the field reporting for the common man like you and me?
I further read how she spent days and nights outside cremation grounds, bringing us the truth about the Covid situation in India. The smoke, dust, smell of burning bodies, and wailing of grief-stricken relatives did not stop her from doing her duty. We needed to see that coverage, so be thankful to her.
Journalists from other countries should learn — simply reporting the death toll does not work; you need to set up cameras outside cemeteries and crematoriums for people to see.
Seeing is believing.
Anyway, furious, I contacted the Office of the draconian government.
No response for a week.
I thought so — what else would you expect from those Nazis? They believe they are answerable to no one.
But a week later I received a shocking response.
WTF?!
Scratching my head, I double-checked the senders’ email address: it was from the verified Prime Ministers Office email address.
I am still dumbfounded. You would be too when you read the PMO’s response. Quoting the relevant part here:
In 2008, a blogger named Chyetanya Kunte wrote a blog post titled “Shoddy Journalism.” The blog post was a critical narrative of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks media coverage. The blogger expressly pointed out Ms. Barkha Dutt and her then-employer(NDTV), accusing them of aiding and abetting the terrorists with their tell-all media coverage of the attacks. He lashed out at them for reporting sensitive information live on their channel.
Free speech advocates — Ms. Barkha Dutt and her employer — did not take this criticism lightly. They forced Mr. Kunte to delete his blog post and issue an unconditional apology.
The Honorable Modi Ji has been a big fan of Ms. Barkha Dutt ever since. Ms. Barkha inspired Modi Ji to deal with criticism the same way she did in 2008. Of course, the fearless Barkha would not surrender to a mere warning or threat, so Modi Ji, playfully, uses the police and laws to scare her now and then.
The Prime Ministers Office of India
Who would’ve thought. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I can literally hear the bhakts say, “Waah Modiji, waah.”
Democracy is one of the best ways to run any Nation. In India democracy has not been adopted, rather we have democratic nature since the time immemorial. We have developed democracy inside us since the time immemorial. Whereas different parts of this world have faced despotic rulers, Indian rulers of Indian origin were mostly democratic. They never behaved like a dictator and the nature of Indian people and Indian texts never allowed them to behave like so.
The fact of the matter is that they always worked like a guardian and made every effort to flourish this nation and in these efforts they never even hesitated to give up everything in their possession. There are many examples of Indian rulers who gave up their every possession for the prosperity of their public and themselves lived like a saint. We also have examples of Indian rulers who were Rajarshis.
After knowing all such facts it is natural that we should hope that India would develop in a very systematic way and the politicians of the present time would behave on the same path on which our Indian rulers of past time have behaved. But when we look at the present situation it looks totally different. Whatever the British did to us were totally against humanity but the question is about our politicians.
Yes, our politicians! Again and again it should be get reminded to us that are they really able to be called our politicians. Have they really such quality?
After independence India developed much. Today we are under top five economies. But are these developments due to politicians? No, India has developed due to the people of India. Another question which arises is what did the politicians do to bring all the people on the same pedestal.
Did they bring equal qualified and standard education and health facilities to all the people of this Nation? If they did, which might be claimed by them because they can claim anything, then where are these facilities?
Now come to peace. No doubt there would be peace in the homes and lives of politicians but what about the public. Are the public always bound to live an unpeaceful life? These politicians use the sentiments of the public from time to time for their own benefits and do not do anything to bring peace in the life of the public.
There are a lot of options left in the hands of politicians with the help of which they play peacefully to make the life of the public unpeaceful and the innocent public do not understand that these politicians are playing with them.
Now talk about prosperity. Who did get prosperity in the last 74 years with very little labour? Labour! Although, I have used the word labour but in truth this word should not be used. Why wasn’t such a word used? Because these politicians have always said and claimed that they are serving the Nation and the people of the Nation.
And in truth they are serving the Nation or ruling over the Nation is a matter of debate. I do not want to get indulged into that.
One thing is also important that these politicians think themself that they are above the Nation and Constitution. When the same Laws are applied over all the people of the Nation then how can politicians think themselves excluded from these.
There are always two positions of these politicians. Either they would be in power or they would be out of power. People can easily understand what would happen when they would be in power and when they would be out of power then they can make allegations that any legal action against them is retaliation. How would the system work properly? Are Laws only for the public? Not for politicians!

During the last 12 months, was there a time when, because of lack of money or other resources: You were worried you would not have enough food to eat? You ate less than you thought you should?
The Global Hunger Report 2022 released by Concern Worldwide and Welt Hunger Hilfe, Non-Government Organisations from Ireland and Germany respectively, rely on opinions to questions such as these as indicators of hunger. The indicators termed as Global Hunger Index (GHI), place India (107/121 countries) much behind its neighbouring countries — Pakistan (99), Bangladesh (84), Nepal (81) and Sri Lanka (64).
The Government of India, in an official statement, called the report “misinformation” and part of a “consistent effort’’ to “taint India’s image”. The index “suffers from serious methodological issues”. Calling the report “disconnected from reality”, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it chooses to “deliberately ignore efforts made by the government to ensure food security” during the pandemic.
Methodology:
The GHI looks at four main indicators:
1. Undernourishment: calculated by the share of the population whose caloric intake is less than 1800 Kcal/capita/day;
2. Child Wasting: calculated by the share of children under the age of five who have low weight for their height;
3. Child Stunting: calculated by the share of children under the age of five who have low height for their age;
4. Child Mortality: calculated by the mortality rate of children under the age of five.
Flawed Logic:
Three out of the four indicators used for the calculation of the index are related to health and not hunger. The indicators are restricted to children aged below 5 years of age. The fourth — Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU) is based on an opinion poll conducted on a very small sample size of 3000 (India’s population is 138 crores).
Three out of the four indicators constitute only 11.5% of the total population in India. Also, undernourished population is calculated as inclusive of undernutrition in children. With this calculation, GHI is clearly assigning 70.5% weightage to children who are below five — that constitutes less share, and then assigning 29.5% weightage to population who is above five, which holds 81.5% of the total population.
This methodology also ignores genetic factors, wherein international norms on stunting and wasting may not be applicable to India. In addition, there is hardly any evidence that the fourth indicator, namely, child mortality is an outcome of hunger.
Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU):
One of the components to derive PoU is sourced from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO). FAO assumes population having less than the FAO Minimum Dietary Energy Requirement (MDER) of 1800 Kcal/capita/day intake as undernourished. This criterion itself is problematic as energy requirements of individuals vary according to age, sex, physical activity and body size.
It is therefore incorrect to compare the dietary intake of an individual with an average dietary requirement. Moreover, as per the data from National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB) survey, a substantial proportion of the Indian population, who consume less than the FAO MDER, is ~39% overweight, while ~12% is obese. This is a direct contrast to the logic of calculating PoU.
Strangely, while the FAO relies on data provided by national governments for most countries, for India, it relies on data collated from an opinion poll whose sample size was 3000 in 2021 and 6350 in 2022.
This matter was taken up with the FAO, as the statistical output based on incorrect inferences was bound to be factually incorrect. An assurance from the FAO was forthcoming, however, Global Hunger Index report, irrespective of such factual considerations was nevertheless published. This is not only wrong and unethical, but it also reeks of obvious bias.
Ironically, the per capita dietary energy supply in India has been increasing year-on-year. Under such circumstances, there is absolutely no reason why the country’s undernourishment levels should increase.
Questionable Sources:
The Global Hunger Index needs to be challenged for many reasons including reliance on outdated data, flawed methodology and dubious sources. Primary example can be that of China, whose score was 13.3 in 2000, and has made a spectacular improvement since then — its score is now less than 5.
In 2020, senior officials of the World Bank had ensured that the data from China for Ease of Doing Business were fudged in order to improve its rating. They ordered manipulation of data to reverse China’s fall from 78 to 85 in the rankings. WHO’s involvement in giving a free pass to China on Covid-19 virus is well known.
GHI data comes from various UN and other multilateral agencies like the WHO, World Bank, UNICEF, FAO and from “authors’ estimates”. Considering the above given examples, how reliable is the data collected by the WHO and used by those who finalised the GHI rankings?
The GHI report, which seeks to run down India, is in line with some other global institutions like Press Freedom Index prepared by the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and the Democracy Report 2020 produced by the Swedish agency V-Dem. The RSF report had claimed that there was better press freedom in many countries, which are in reality devoid of the basic fundamentals of democracy, than in India.
Maldives, for example, where only Muslims can be citizens, and where the Sharia law is supreme, is supposedly a better “democracy”, and a nation with better press freedom than India. There are dozens of such examples in these reports, which clearly establish that they are agenda-driven.
Government’s Initiatives:
The Government of India is running the largest food security programme in the world. During the outbreak of COVID-19, the Modi Government in March 2020 announced the distribution of additional free-of-cost foodgrains (Rice/Wheat) to about 80 Crore National Food Security Act (NFSA) beneficiaries at the scale of 5 Kg per person per month under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY), over and above the regular monthly NFSA foodgrains i.e., regular entitlements of their ration cards.
Under Anganwadi Services, supplementary nutrition was provided to approximately 7.71 crore children up to the age of 6 years and to 1.78 crore pregnant women and lactating mothers. Under Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojna, more than 1.5 Crore registered women were provided Rs 5000/- on the birth of their first child for wage support and nutritious food during pregnancy and post-delivery period.
As per the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) report, Child Stunting in the country has decreased from 38.4 percent (NFHS-4, 2015-16) to 35.5 percent (NFHS-5, 2019-21) and Child Wasting has decreased from 21.0 percent (NFHS-4, 2015-16) to 19.3 percent (NFHS-5, 2019-21). Further, the percentage of underweight children has gone down from 35.8 percent (NFHS-4, 2015-16) to 32.1 percent (NFHS-5, 2019-21).
GHI 2022 also goes against the findings of a working paper of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that noted Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKAY), which provides free foodgrains to poor people, played a key role in keeping extreme poverty in India at the lowest level of 0.8 per cent during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Conclusion:
The GHI exaggerates the measure of hunger, lacks statistical vigour, and has a problem on multiple counts. Its assessment does not reflect the ground reality and is not worthy of consideration. It is, in fact, a hallmark of misinformation and false propaganda. The time has therefore come to call out the so-called “global” reports and scrutinize the work of world bodies.
Everything the Prophet did was an example for all Muslims to follow — including iconoclasm. From Somnath to Gyanvapi — all stories of temple destruction in India are reminiscent of what Mohammad did in Mecca.

Muslim politicians and scholars in present-day India resent any reference whatsoever to the destruction of Hindu temples in medieval times. They react as if it is a canard(rumour) being spread by those they stigmatise as Hindu communalists.
There was, however, a time, not so long ago, when their predecessors viewed the same performance as an act of piety and proclaimed it with considerable pride in inscriptions and literary compositions. Hindus of medieval India hardly wrote any history of what happened to their places of worship at the hands of Islamic iconoclasts. Whatever evidence the “Hindu communalists” cite in this context comes entirely from Islamic sources, epigraphic and literary.
— Sita Ram Goel in Hindu Temples: What Happened to Them Vol .1,1990.
The above was true in 1990, and it’s still true in 2022. There was a time when Muslim authors described the deeds of the Muslim rulers of their times with extreme pride. But times have changed, and so has their “public” stance.
From Maasir -i -Alamgiri(account of Emperor Aurangzeb’s reign by Saqi Mustad Khan):
Excerpt from Maasir -i -Alamgiri — Aurangzeb ordering destruction of Dehra of Keshav Rai in Mathura. Read till the end.
In these times of religious tolerance, fans of Aurangzeb defend him by saying that he paid for the renovation of temples, not destroy them. Shameless — refuting history that does not suit Muslims is one of the reasons why Hindu- Muslim tensions keep popping up in India.
So, why were temples — Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist — always a target throughout Islamic history in India by both Islamic invaders and rulers?
The Conquest of Mecca by the Prophet in 630 AD gives us the answer.
Conquest of Mecca
The Encyclopaedia of Islam says, “Muhammad, when he entered Mecca as a victor, is stated to have struck them in the eyes with the end of his bow before he had them dragged down and destroyed by fire.”
The Prophet made iconoclasm a pious performance for all Muslims for all time to come when he practised it himself on the very day he conquered Mecca. “When the Prophet,” writes Ibn Ishaq(the first biographer of the Prophet), “prayed the noon prayer on the day of the conquest, he ordered that all the idols which were round the Kaba should be collected and burnt with fire and broken up.”
The Encyclopaedia of Islam says, “Muhammad, when he entered Mecca as a victor, is stated to have struck them in the eyes with the end of his bow before he had them dragged down and destroyed by fire.”
Pictorial representations of Ali standing on the shoulders of the Prophet and tearing down the idol of Hubal from top of a Ka‘ba wall, have been published by Shias!
Soon after, expeditions were sent to other parts of Arabia for doing what had been done at Mecca. Idols were smashed and temples destroyed or converted into mosques everywhere.
Muslim poets vied with each other to record the events in rapturous verse.
Fazal bin al-Mulawwih sang:
“Had you seen Muhammad and his troops, The day the idols were smashed when he entered, You would have seen God’s light become manifest,
In darkness covering the face of idolatry”.
And Kab bin Malik:
“We forsook al-Lat, al-Uzza and Wudd* We stripped off their necklaces and earrings”.
And al-Mustaughir Bin Rabia who was a warrior as well as a poet:
“I smashed Ruda so completely that
I left it a black ruin in a hollow”.

Following the path of the Prophet
It is recorded history that the armies of Islam did everywhere what had been done in Arabia, as they advanced into Iran, Khorasan, Transoxiana, Seistan, Afghanistan and India.
“Growing Islam,” concludes the Encyclopaedia of Islam, “was from the very beginning intent upon the destruction of all traces of pagan idolatry and was so successful that the anti-quarians of the second and third century of the Hajira could glean only very scanty details.
Some of the idols were made use of for other purposes, as for example, the idol Dhul-Kalasa which was worshipped at Tabala, a place on the road from Mecca to Yaman in the time of Ibn al-Kalbi (about 200 A.D.), was used as a stepping stone under the door of the mosque at Tabala. Other stones which had been worshipped as idols were actually used as corner-stones of the Kaaba.
It is recorded history that the armies of Islam did everywhere what had been done in Arabia, as they advanced into Iran, Khorasan, Transoxiana, Seistan, Afghanistan and India.
Hundreds of thousands of Fire Temples of theZoroastrians, Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples disappeared or yielded place to mosques, ziarats and Dargahs.
Modern archaeology, has reconstructed what happened along the trail of Islamic invasion of all these ancient lands.

Refer to the excerpt from Maasir -i- Alamgiri above: the idols of Hindu Gods from the Dehra of Keshav Rai in Mathura were buried under the steps of the Mosque of Begam Sahib(Jahanara).
Temple destruction in India and their descriptions by Muslim Poets
“So the temple of Somnath”, he wrote, “was made to bow towards the Holy Mecca, and the temple lowered its head and jumped into the sea, so you may say that the building first said its prayers and then had a bath.”
Temples were attacked all along the way as the armies of Islam advanced; they were robbed of their sculptural wealth, pulled down, laid waste, burnt with naptha, trodden under horses hoofs, and destroyed from their very foundations, till not a trace of them remained.
Mahmud of Ghazni robbed and burnt down 1,000 temples at Mathura, and 10,000 in and around Kanauj.
One of his successors, Ibrahim, demolished 1,000 temples each in Hindustan (Ganga-Yamuna Doab) and Malwa.
Muhammad Ghuri destroyed another 1,000 at Varanasi.
Qutbud-Din Aibak employed elephants for pulling down 1,000 temples in Delhi.
Ali I Adil Shah of Bijapur destroyed 200 to 300 temples in Karnataka.
A sufi, Qayim Shah, destroyed 12 temples at Tiruchirapalli.
Such exact or approximate counts, however, are available only in a few cases.
Most of the time we are informed that many strong temples which would have remained unshaken even by the trumpets blown on the Day of Judgment, were leveled with the ground when swept by the wind of Islam.
We find the Muslim historians going into raptures as they describe scenes of desecration and destruction.
For Amir Khusru it was always an occasion to show off the power of his poetic imagination. When Jalalud-Din Khalji wrought havoc at Jhain, a cry rose from the temples as if a second Mahmud had taken birth.
The temples in the environs of Delhi were bent in prayers and made to do prostration, by Alaud-Din Khalji. When the temple of Somnath was destroyed and its debris thrown into the sea towards the west, the poet rose to his full height. “So the temple of Somnath”, he wrote, “was made to bow towards the Holy Mecca, and the temple lowered its head and jumped into the sea, so you may say that the building first said its prayers and then had a bath.”
— Sita Ram Goel in Hindu Temples: What Happened to Them Vol .1,1990.
Temples were destroyed only for their riches?
Some Muslim scholars who cannot unashamedly refute history try to twist it by explaining the destruction of temples in India in terms of loot & plunder purely for the riches they concealed.
Several instances are cited when the Hindus tried to ransom their idols, sometimes by expressing willingness to pay their weight in gold. All such offers were rejected with contempt because the hero concerned wanted to earn merit in the eyes of Allah rather than mere mammon( biblical term for riches). Those who want to explain away the destruction of Hindu temples in terms of economic motives, are called upon to explain these instances.
— Sita Ram Goel in Hindu Temples: What Happened to Them Vol .1,1990.
Conclusion
The Prophet is the role model of every Muslim on earth — all that happened to millions of temples in India was inspired by what he did in Mecca.
Looters and plunderers don’t make sure they deface the idols, chop off their limbs, and throw them in the sea. This was not loot and plunder. Everything else is either whataboutery, or a lie.
Collins dictionary
The very sight of four words “The bird is freed”, which Elon Musk posted in Twitter in the wake of his takeover of the ownership of the micro blogging social media platform and conversion of the same from public to private property ‘in vengeance’, made this author, a keen watcher of Fourth Pillar of Democracy, have a hearty laugh.
The hostile takeover was in fact a very dramatic one as the Forbes’s wealthiest topper carried in his own hands a heavy ceramic bathroom sink to bird’s nest and on his very arrival ordered chopping of bird’s wings, who were so far had been very instrumental for the bird’s flying around the world invading almost all countries, and allegedly ordered chopped wings’ escorted out from the nest in a manner unseen and unheard up in media/corporate history in the world; looked like he had enacted a replay of yesteryear Bollywood blockbuster ‘Nayak: The Real Hero’.
But, like Nayak, Elon Musk is not one day Chief of Twitter. Soon after his took over, he wasted no time to change his Twitter profile to “Chief Twit”; whereas after four days of alleged escorted out from bird’s headquarter, Ajmer-born Parag Agrawal intriguingly continued to retain his Twitter profile “ceo @twitter”, means there were two CEOs for four days, though news was in circulation that he was joining Meta in first week of 2023 after break of two months during which he would be visiting India where bird’s founder CEO Jack Dorsey and its legal cell head Hyderabad-born Vijaya Gadde –latter one is the first four top executives sacked by Elon Musk on the very first day of takeover- during their 2018 liberal and free speech pilgrimage to world’s largest democracy to promote “smash brahminical patriarchy”.
Along with the tweet of “The bird is freed”, the muscular looked Elon Musk posted a video with caption “Entering Twitter HQ – let that sink in!” Later, in a note, he said the acquisition is to ‘help humanity’ and not let Twitter become a ‘free-for-all, hellscape’.
In his note to Twitter advertisers, he further clarified, “The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner. The platform must be warm and welcoming to all.”
Elon Musk, a businessman/industrialist, is now a sole owner of this powerful social media platform where almost all top world political leaders, opinion leaders, powerful offices and institutions have their accounts. Here, nobody should forget that through this platform many significant national and international communications are made, means in the meanwhile the platform has been an inalienable part and parcel of human affairs throughout the length and breadth of the world within a short span of 16 years of its birth.
Along with the above, there are instances of this powerful platform has been misused by vested interests including influential public figures to create religious, ethnic, class, …. conflicts as we in India had seen on our pious 52nd Republic Day in the country’s national capital and in US Capitol Hill in 2021, a few days before the transition of power as per popular mandate in the just concluded country’s presidential election, among others.
Both India and America are the largest and oldest democracies respectively, and are virtually leading the democratic movements in the world. And many countries look at these two for democratic inspiration and leadership.
Apart from the above, the most unfortunate and alarming is the platform’s misuse by its new owner Elon Musk himself. He, within three days of announcing “The bird is freed”, posted a tweet promoting the baseless allegation that Paul Pelosi aged 82, the husband of the US Speaker of the House of Representatives, a Democratic Party member, who was assaulted on Friday at the couple’s home, ‘had been drunk and in a fight with a male prostitute’.
Later, Musk deleted the same in response to a tweet posted next day by Hillary Clinton, the former Secretary of State, attacking Republican Party for spreading ‘hate and deranged conspiracy theories’ that she said had emboldened the man who attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband.
Over this development, former US Secretary of Labour and at present Professor of Public Policy in University of California Robert Reich wrote in The Guardian “If Musk’s tweet doesn’t raise bright red warning signs all over the world about his judgment and character, just days after he took over one of the planet’s largest and most influential media machines, I don’t know what will” in his column titled “Elon Musk’s Paul Pelosi tweet proves he has no business running Twitter”.
This is not the only occasion Elon Musk had exhibited his contemptuous behavior using Twitter platform. In 2018, he posted a tweet claiming he had secured funding to take his business establishment Tesla private at $420 per share without specific back up to the claim. The issue sparked an investigation by the US Security and Exchange Commission which fined him $40 million. He allegedly was critical of ban of Donald Trump in Twitter platform after Capitol Hill riot.
Was Elon Musk forced to take over Twitter to save him from legal tangle he himself had spun? This is one the most exciting question in the whole affairs. After initially agreeing to buy his alleged ‘caged bird’ in April 2022, he spent months desperately attempting to get out of the deal alleging that the company failed to adequately disclose the number of spam and fake accounts on the service.
In July, when he officially announced to back out of the deal, Twitter sued the richest maverick alleging he ‘refuses to honour his obligations to Twitter and its stockholders because the deal he signed no longer serves his personal interests.’
The gist of the whole episode is neither Elon Musk nor the platform founder including Jack Dorsey has bought and founded the platform respectively to promote liberal democratic ethos through free speech. They are professional agenda driven hypocrats and opportunists.
Here, one should not forget that the entire drama started soon after founder CEO Jack Dorsey handed over the management to Parag Agrawal to bear the hidden agenda of unsavory transfer of the ownership of the platform for monetary benefit to share-holders using an employee from India which is at the receiving end of the dubious Western liberal democratic prophecy.
This is why perhaps Indian filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri posted a picture of Vijaya Gadde with Twitter’s ex-CEO Jack Dorsey, holding a placard saying “smash brahminical patriarchy”, and said, “They wanted to smash Brahminical Patriarchy but got smashed themselves.”
Thus, the slogan “The bird is freed” and Nayakism of Twitter new owner, unjustly designated by many as ‘free speech absolutist’, are the biggest jokes of the century as the bird is not going to be freed in any case. Yes, agree that the cage owner is changed, and the cage may get a new design or coat eventually. And that’s all for the Fourth Pillar of the Democracy.
Should the reader bear with my great eccentricity, it is possible, however unlikely, that he shall be met with a fresh perspective, though it be but an opinion prone to error.
Tribe, village, city, kingdom, empire — the journey of man, passing through these stages in that order, has spanned millennia. As the organization of people evolves into ever greater scales, the preservation of order grows ever the more precarious. That purpose is best served, it is understood as a matter of rudiment, with the victual of a unifying myth.
A congeries of nations forms our world, and until such time as this congeries is welded into an improbable homogeneity — à la Coruscant — every nation shall require the recurrent feeding of this victual to its ever rustic commons.
But to what avail the mere existence of such a myth, if it cannot fascinate the common mind? The chambers of academia may revel in dry language, deeming it so very formal, and so very erudite, but the significance of such a myth is best impressed upon the rank and file in eloquent and vivid prose. In order to secure as large a sum total of attention as possible, it must stir a range of sentiment — pride as our past attains to glory, woe as it falls like the setting sun, and solemnity as the age surveyed reflects a resigned monotony.
Spiritless prose cannot but erode away at the efficacy of such a myth; to say nothing of such countries as have the most unadventurous of myths. A few pages into reading “India’s Struggle for Independence” by Bipan Chandra et al, and I found no dearth of occasions on which I thought I was reading yet another insipid newspaper editorial.
This may be contrasted with the magisterial volumes of R.C. Majumdar, Sir Jadunath Sarkar, and, the historian who I think had the greatest facility with language, Edward Gibbon. But the contemporary example of Dr. Vikram Sampath also serves admirably; his prose may not be as elevated as that of these individuals, and this is meant in no elitist or disdainful sense but is mere fact, but to his narration there is a logical storytelling elegance that makes his biography of Savarkar eminently readable.
It must not be forgotten, however, that the historian must balance his art of eloquence, such as he possesses, with unswerving fidelity to truth, lest the joy of elegant writing swell into fond exaggeration.
The textbooks on Indian history, certainly at school, and certainly those adopted by CBSE into its curriculum, do not admit of eloquence, and on occasion admit of little accuracy. Too often they are a bland chronicle of the invasions of India by sundry forces, and they speak cursorily of the state of affairs of each era. It is as if bullet points from a power-point presentation were expanded into sentences, with all the accompaniments of grammar, and none of those of creativity. None of this could possibly seize the interest of young minds. This challenge lends itself to no easy resolution, for it is three-fold.
The first obstacle is that the books are written in English. That language is in India a status symbol, if only in a more diluted form than earlier, and given a chance Indians will readily advertise their knowledge of it, but not half of such enthusiasm is to be seen in attaining to proficiency in it. In part owing to the insistence of inept teachers, and in part owing to their own ineptitude, they cannot but write answers in examinations that scarce deviate from the text in their books.
Their oral responses to questions posed by parents during study sessions at home sound robotic, and devoid of human thought, which trait is not necessarily discarded as the student ages into an adult specimen; the trait is also true of many a professor.
Whether in writing or in the speech of the students, an assessor can never be certain that the bland words of the textbook mean aught to them, for theirs is not a passionate answer but a soulless regurgitation, and as they are not native speakers of English, their vocabularies are pitifully scant. In such circumstances, vivid and elegant prose may prove all the more difficult to read.
The second obstacle is that refined prose is most effective if it treats of the subject in ample detail. I recall the chapters consisting of paragraphs under a sub-heading, usually dedicated to a dynasty, that treated of the era with dazzling haste. So hastily surveyed an era cannot but be lacklustre, but a detailed treatment may result in longer chapters, and perhaps a weightier syllabus. This possibility must be viewed in context of the fact that a student also has obligations to other subjects.
The third obstacle does not form the cynosure of my article, and so I will write of it limitedly. But it is, doubtless, the gravest of them, and that is the absence altogether of a meaningful myth. The myth to which standard historiography subscribes is of a prosaically secularist bent. Such an interpretation of secularism, frail as its philosophy is, would deem even a mere mention of India as an ancient civilization a matter of scandal, to say nothing of expatiation.
Tales of indigenous victories are few and far between. Comfortable and vapid myths of communal fraternity are invented, and the wrong parties are deemed its principal violators. Constitutional agitation, as opposed to the ardour of revolutionaries, is insinuated to have won this country its freedom (it would seem to me that nothing won this country its freedom, but it is a topic that deserves a separate article). In summary, history does not narrate a rich tale; it is a timeline written in full and dull sentences.
In the way of resolution, it may be proposed that seniors, such as have the inclination, energy, and intellect to read beyond the artless books at school, actively help their juniors with much better historical perspective, should the juniors themselves repose interest in the subject.
