Why opposition might not replicate 2003 surprise in 2019

0

There have been just two non-congress governments in the last 70 years which have been able to complete their full term; erstwhile NDA govt with Vajpayee Ji as the PM and current NDA govt. with Narendra Modi as the PM. Many parallels are drawn between the two governments and comparisons are inevitable. Specially when the opposition is hoping to replicate the surprise of 2003 general elections.

It is, therefore, imperative to understand the strategy of the opposition then and now to understand whether a repeat is possible or not.

Opposition Strategy

Not much has changed in the opposition’s strategy while countering the respective governments. Then opposition, led by Sonia Gandhi and powerful regional leaders, constructed a counter narrative of Unemployment, manufactured Coffin Scam (which was lost soon after 2003 election victory), Farm loan waiver, agrarian distress, intolerance and security of the minorities after 2002 riots; to counter the “India Shining” campaign of the BJP.

Similarly, opposition has tried to corner the current govt. on similar issues like imaginative Rafale Scam, Lynchings, Farmer Suicides, Unemployment and Minorities Safety. Apart from these usual issues, this govt. has given more ammunition to the opposition with the amount of reforms and historic decisions it has undertaken in last 4.5 years whether it is GST, Demonitization, IBC and NPAs, Crackdown on corruption and institutional reforms.

Difference between 2003 and 2019

With opposition strategy remaining the same, is it possible for a repeat of 2003 election result where India Shining campaign completely backfired for the BJP and Vajpayee Ji?

Although anything is possible when it comes to the public mood, if we study the crucial differences between the working of the two governments, a similar result looks like a distant possibility.

There have been many similarities between the working of two govts, like the thrust on infrastructure, better governance, no corruption at highest level, more freedom to security forces, and major policy reforms; but we should focus more on the key differences in the operating styles of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi and their governance.

Pakistan Policy

Despite fighting the Kargil war with Pakistan in its last term, Vajpayee Ji opted for soft policy on Pakistan and its sponsored terrorism even after the Parliament attack. He did deploy a large army on the borders but it achieved little while costing the Indian taxpayer hugely.

On the other hand, after the initial peace attempts, Narendra Modi has adopted a muscular approach towards Pakistan since 2016 after the Uri attack. He has approved Surgical Strikes across LOC as well Air Strikes across IB in retaliation to the terrorist attacks on Indian soil. Contrast that to 1999 Kargil war, when Vajpayee Ji refused to give permission to the Indian Army to cross LOC despite being in a dominant position.

Speed and Efficiency of Social Schemes

Narendra Modi govt has been able to achieve some impressive and astounding milestones when it comes to delivery of social schemes through a re-energized bureaucracy. 7 crores LPG connections under Ujjawala with 82% returning users; opening of over 30 crore bank accounts and DBT to all beneficiaries under many of the schemes; income support to farmers upto Rs.6000 directly in their bank accounts; health insurance upto Rs. 5 Lakhs for poor; immunization of over 25 million kids and pregnant mothers in just 4 years; electricity connection to every village and every household; almost 100% coverage of toilets in rural and urban areas; and many other initiatives which reached to the actual beneficiaries rather than getting entangled in an inefficient and corrupt system as was the case before.

Difficult and Major Reforms – Changing the system

Narendra Modi govt has been able to bring some major reforms like GST, IBC, Make In India, Digital India, Banking reforms, rise in EODB rankings from 141 to 77 in 4 years, Benami Act, crucial defense procurement, NRC, Citizenship Bill, among many others. This is while ignoring the Lutyens and mainstream media and intellectual liberals, while cracking down on NGOs and other organizations with dubious funding, while closing the doors for brokers and lobbyists, and while cracking down on the privileged and beneficiaries of the old system cutting across sections of society.

This govt. has dismantled the old system to lay the foundation of a new transparent and responsive system rather than just trying to improve the defunct system as was the case with Vajpayee Ji’s govt.

Unapologetically Hindu

Although the approach of both the govts have been the same vis-a-vis Ram Mandir, Narendra Modi has been more open towards Hindutava ideology. Whether it is the appointment of a Mandir religious head to the post of CM of the most populous state of India, or grand celebration of Hindu festivals, or getting the resolution passed in UN for Yoga day with historic majority, or restoration of many dilapidated religious temples and buildings.

This has helped in hiding the misses when it comes to issues like Ram Mandir, Uniform Civil Code, changes in RTE act, relinquishing the control of govt. over Hindu temples and other religious places.

BJP has been so successful in its Hindutva ideology that even the opposition is being forced to practice Soft Hindutva, visit temples, celebrate Hindu festivals, show their Janeu and talk about cow protection.

Statesman vs Politician

Atal Ji was often termed as a Statesman even by the opposition leaders. Narendra Modi does not expect this kind of treatment either from opposition or from pliant media. He does not care about criticism by the armchair intellectual liberal lutyens class and does not seek their approval. That is one of the traits that has irked many who were part of the establishment. He came as an outsider in 2014, in contrast to Atal Ji, who was always a part of the Delhi power corridors.

He also has been very vocal while criticizing the opposition parties, particularly Congress and the Gandhi family. He is a hungry politician who does not sit on previous laurels and wants to advance his party’s political footprint to as much landmass as possible. He is more ferocious and direct than Atal Ji ever was.

Lack of credibility and strong leadership in the opposition camp

In 2003, Sonia Gandhi was able to rally together strong regional parties under the umbrella of UPA with Congress as the core of the alliance. All the opposition leaders had faith in Sonia Gandhi’s leadership.

Contrast that to today, where a record string of losses for Congress and its President Rahul Gandhi has led to complete loss of faith in his leadership within and outside the Congress party. He comes across as reluctant, superficial, uninspiring, weak leader who is fighting for his own survival. Plus the corruption charges against him and UPA-2 has damaged the credibility of the opposition in a big way.

None of the other regional leader seems powerful enough to match up to Narendra Modi’s appeal and charisma. Even if some of the regional leaders are able to give a good fight, it will unlikely be enough to unseat him from the PM post.

That’s why I feel, it would be difficult for the opposition to repeat 2003 election results and Narendra Modi should be able to come back to power after 2019 general elections.

Why BJP badly needs to increase its candidate familiarity index in Tamil Nadu first before any poll strategy

0

If BJP wants to make gains in Tamil Nadu, it needs to move beyond strategy and speeches and promote their faces within the constituencies first. The Westminister style campaigning of asking to vote for one leader at the center may click with the urban voters who realize that having a stable government is more important for the economy, but the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu have a voter base (the base which swings left and right to decide the winner) believes that they need a leader who could represent their interests at the center and bring in more development in their specific area. The south part of India is particularly known for this behavior where you cannot show a prime ministerial face and expect any person to win at the state levels. This was very apparent in the previous elections where despite the Modi wave, there could not be much disturbance to the existing voter patterns in the Southern states. With its current agreement of 5 seats sealed with AIADMK and PMK, it is important for BJP to at least convert its seats to have a future in Tamil Nadu and make headway into the mindshare of voters.

Looking closely at Sivaganga where the BJP is planning to contest this year with its star candidate H. Raja throws some light of why there is work to be done and every small effort to improve voter familiarity taken could turn out to be fruitful.

1 2014 Senthilnathan Pr 475,993 46.30% All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam
2 2014 Dhurai Raaj Subha 246,608 24.00% Dravida Munetra Kazhagam
3 2014 Raja H 133,763 13.00% Bharatiya Janta Party
4 2014 Karti P Chidambaram 104,678 10.20% Indian National Congress
1 2009 Chidambaram P 334,348 43.10% Indian National Congress
2 2009 Raja Kannappan R.S. 330,994 42.70% All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam
3 2009 Barwatha Regina Papa 60,054 7.70% Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam
1 2004 Chidambaram, P. 400,393 60.20% Indian National Congress
2 2004 Karuppiah. S P 237,668 35.80% All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam

Lok sabha 2004 saw Chidambaram winning from this home constituency by a huge margin of 60% with his next candidate falling short of his tally by more than 1.5 lakh votes, the next elections saw the AIADMK gain enough traction because of the strength of a candidate who was well known in the constituency because of playing diverse roles in AIADMK primarily in Sivaganga; Raja Kannappan was a known face in the constituency right from 1972 playing roles such as Student wing secretary, Union secretary and District secretary for the ADMK and got elected on a MLA seat as early as 1991.

Chidambaran still won in this elections but by a very small margin of less than 4000 votes. In 2014, it was no surprise that both DMK and congress was trounced by the AIADMK candidate because of the corruption charges in 2G, but it was interesting to note that H. Raja polled more votes than Karti Chidambaram from the Congress.

This year gets extremely interesting with AIADMK aligning with the NDA and Raja still contesting from the same constituency, but still there is a gap of around 1.1 Lakhs and 3.4 lakhs between his tally and the 2nd and 1st positions respectively. The analysis of this constituency shows that known faces tend to get more traction here and H. Raja is sitting with a huge disadvantage in this aspect (there was a time in 1999 where Raja had come a close second but it was under the alliance of DMK and not independently). In the days to come, H. Raja would need to seriously consider campaigning voraciously in Sivaganga since the DMK is going to most probably come up with a locally known face which the Sivaganga voter base always prefers.

BJP cannot be banking on the social media reach that H. Raja currently holds as mostly its only the negative things that flows down south from Chennai from social media channels, only the urban voters in Chennai actually appreciate the knowledge and education of this man. Sivaganga’s fort is going to be tough one to capture and not understanding the people’s issues or increasing familiarity is not going to help the lotus shadow the sun.

India-Pakistan: Surgical Strikes, Air Strikes and beyond

0

In the military circles, it is often said that if you cannot understand the intentions, strategy and mindset of your enemy, you will never be able to defeat it. For more than 3 decades, India has suffered hundreds of terrorists attacks perpetrated on her soil with the support of Pakistan Army. That’s why Indian military and defense experts from over the world have done extensive research on Pakistan Army – the real power center in Pakistan which installs the PM and Govt. of its choice to maintain the facade of Democracy.

Intentions

When Pakistan was carved out in 1947 to satisfy the egos and ambitions of the powerful politicians and needs and self-interests of big nations, the biggest injustice was done to the millions who were stripped off of their identity without allowing to utter a single word. They lost their culture, motherland, families, friends and their other multiple identities. They were told that being Muslims is all that matters. Forget your ancestors, forget your past and work together to build a new nation which now they are part of. But it is easier said than done. You cannot expect people with different cultures, values, background, identities, interests to suddenly rally together and be united under a new identity.

That is where India and specifically Kashmir came in handy. Pakistani people were told that India is their enemy that wants to break Pakistan and Kashmir, being the heaven of earth, when liberated from Indian rule would bring development and richness to their life. This thought process was mixed with heavy doses of religious indoctrination through thousands of Madrassas that have been operating on its soil since decades. With a strong population of over 200 million and a system that support extremism, fundamentalism, terrorism; it is not difficult to find a constant supply of few thousand young people who are ready to fight in the name of Allah or Kashmir or just out of their pure hatred for India or Hindus/Infidels.

Strategy

Every professional military in the world has its own doctrine which is used to prepare an army of young people who are ready to live and die on their superior’s orders. Pakistan Military doctrine is an extensive document focused solely on India and Islam. It mentions two important terms which spills out their strategy very clearly – “Ghazwa-e-Hind” and “bleed India with a thousand cuts”.

After 1971 war, India becoming Nuclear power and multi fold increase Indian Army capabilities, Pakistan Army understood that it cannot take India in a direct war so they devised the strategy “bleed India with a thousand cuts” which basically means to exploit fault lines that exist in Indian society like religion, caste, region, etc. while simultaneously perpetrating attacks on Indian soil through non state actors to keep India down and bruised. This explains the attacks in Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Patna, Ahmedabad, Varanasi, Punjab, and many other places all over India in last 3 decades. If Kashmir is the only contentious issue then why attacks all over India? Kashmir is just a facade to justify its animosity towards India to International community and give an escape route to terrorists when they carry out such heinous attacks.

“Ghazwa-e-Hind” is a manifestation of the idea whose seeds were planted in 1947 with the partition. Soldiers need inspiration and motivation while fighting the enemy specially when the enemy is 100 times more powerful. They are told that Allah has prophesied that an army will rise which will fight the “Idol worshipers” and defeat them to establish the rule of Islamic State. This last battle is called “Ghazwa-e-Hind”. They are told that Allah has chosen you to carry out its will and you all will be awarded by the Almighty in your afterlife for fighting this “Holy war or Jihad”. Pakistan Army paints the entire population of India as Hindus and its army as a Hindu Army despite the presence of all communities and religions from top to the bottom in Indian Army.

Mindset

Intentions and Strategy are in itself useless if not supplemented with the right mindset to execute the plans in reality. That is why Pakistan Army has controlled every state system and institution whether it is the Government, Judiciary, Media, religious or civil society to make sure people are informed and told what they deem fit.

They propagate to their soldiers and citizens that Hindus are weak and “1 Pakistani Muslim is equal to 10 Hindu soldiers” so their numbers is not something to be afraid of. They use the Indian non-action in last 20 years after any terrorist attack as the proof of their propaganda. They also spread the lie that once the war actually starts, the 180-200 million Muslims living in India would also rise against India in their support despite having seen otherwise in the 4 wars that they have fought with India.

They use the “Nuclear bogey” to threaten India against any action on its state and non-state actors. They blackmail the World leaders to pressure India in accepting its own fate and keep quiet despite barbaric terrorist attacks by parading their “Nuclear Bombs” and potential of a Nuclear War.

They allow operation of thousands of madrassas that produce thousands of Jihadis for hundreds of terrorist organizations operating from their soil. Pakistani footprints can be seen in terror attacks all over the world whether it is Iran, Afghanistan, India, UK, USA and many other countries. And the monster that has been created and nurtured by Pakistan seems to be biting its own hand as well. But all this is justified through religious indoctrination of Jihad and Allah’s will.

One can see a clear turn towards fundamental Islam in Pakistani Society in last 3-4 decades.

Change in India’s Policy post 2016

India being a noisy Democracy with varied interests and problems, could not follow any consistent policy towards terrorism for a long time. It tried talking to Pakistan, it tried soft approach in the Kashmir Valley against terrorists, it tried intimidating Pakistan by deploying huge army on its borders in response to attack on the Indian Parliament, it tried putting pressure through International forums and diplomatic channels but nothing worked and the attacks kept getting more heinous and gruesome than before.

Surgical Strikes in 2016

But post Uri attack in 2016 where terrorists bombed and burned sleeping soldiers in a military camp, India under a strong leader, who had by the time attempted multiple peace initiatives, decided to change its policy on terror. India changed its policy from defensive-offensive (some would say defensive-defensive) to offensive-defensive which basically means that India would not just wait for terrorist attacks to happen and retaliate (if any) afterwards but would go on a pre-emptive offensive stance and would eliminate terrorists before they can mount any attack.

This change was signaled by “Surgical Strikes” conducted deep inside POK on multiple terrorists launchpads and camps. More than 100 terrorists were eliminated before they could enter the Indian territory. DGMO, Indian Army, made it pretty clear that it was not a revenge mission but a preemptive one to prevent potential attacks on Indian soil. This was significant because India Govt had refused to give permission to Indian forces to cross LOC even during 1999 Kargil War. And here Indian Govt planned and executed a preemptive strike on terrorists residing across LOC through brave Indian forces.

Pakistan response of denial and silence proved to the Indian establishment that there is finally a way to tackle terror in the region.

Pulwama and Balakot Air Strikes

A lot of people ask what did Surgical Strikes achieve? It has not stopped terrorism. Well no one expected Pakistan to behave just after one strike. After all Pakistan is not a sensible nation but “a rouge army controlling the land and people”.

But the strikes surely raised the costs for Pakistan, create fear among terrorists groups, curb new recruitments, helped in maintaining relative peace in Kashmir for many months and no terrorist attacks being carried out in any other part of the country. For a country which had seen terrorist attack in some part of the country every few months for so many years, this was a welcome change.

However, there were attempts from Pakistan side like in Amarnath but were mostly thwarted by an alert intelligence apparatus. But as it happens in a game of dodgeball, no matter how many balls you avoid, one sneaks in to hit you hard and that’s what happened in Pulwama where first of its kind attack was perpetrated by JeM terrorists in which they conducted a suicide attack using a car full of explosives. This form of attack is common in Afghanistan where Taliban and JeM mostly operates. India lost more than 40 of its bravehearts in this cowardice attack. The attack was carried out by a local radicalized JeM terrorist who wanted to hurt “Cow Urine Drinkers”.

This was a big change in Kashmir situation as it signaled that the Kashmir Independence struggle is over and now it is all about waging Jihad against Infidels. This conjecture was also supported by the fact that armed forces have launched a successful “All Out Operation” against terrorists since 2016 which has resulted in many districts getting fully or partially free from terrorism.

But the nation was seething in anger. The question was not “If India would react” as that was settled in 2016, the question was “how would India react”. And India reacted 12 days after the attack with Air Strikes on 2 locations in POK and one location, Balakot, in Pakistan. Indian Air Force carried out a planned attack to destroy the major terrorist camps which had the capacity to harbor and train 600-700 terrorists. Multiple reports have cited casualties to be around 250-350. NTRO (National Telecom Research Organization) which is a covert organization has cited mobile tower data to say around 300 less mobiles were operating in the region immediately after the air strikes, or the satellite images submitted by IAF in its report to Indian Government.

Numbers and effectiveness apart, this was a major response from India as this was the first time India used Air Power against Pakistan since 1971 war and carried out the strikes not just across LOC but across International Border. This was huge and the response from Pakistan proved that when it sent as many as 20 F16s and other fighter aircrafts to attack Indian military establishments risking the violation of F-16 procurement agreement with USA. India successfully thwarted the Pakistan attempt and managed to bring one F-16 with its old retrograde Mig-21 fighter aircraft.

The Road Ahead

Having conducted the Air Strikes on Pakistan soil without a major reaction from Pakistan, India has finally called the “Nuclear Bluff” of Pakistan. It has proven to the world and its own people that there is a escalation ladder and a limited war can be fought against terrorism without risking a nuclear escalation. It has also rattled Pakistan to the extent that ministers are giving contradictory statements everyday and a hogwash attempt has already started in Pakistan where symbolic actions are being taken against terrorist organizations and their leaders.

However, this is not the end of the problem. Pakistan Army is incapable of understanding anything as their own survival and riches are dependent upon keeping the conflict against India alive so that they can justify their 60% control, directly or indirectly, of Pakistan’s GDP to their own public.

It is believed that every conflict has a ladder of escalation and limited war can be fought without ever reaching the “Nuclear threshold” and in India-Pakistan case covert studies list 18 ladders (some even higher) of escalation and response from India before conflict breaches the nuclear threshold.

And if only few responses and escalations from India has rattled Pakistan so much, there is hope that the problem might get solved before ever reaching the nuclear level. If that happens, the lip-service by world leaders for the “Fight against terrorism” would get a major boost as through different reports it is estimated that 70-80% terrorists attacks originate from Pakistan soil. However it seems that while the world would only do lip-service, India is tasked to fight this war against terrorism and its factory – Pakistan Army.

Is there a Kashmir Policy under Narendra Modi govt.?

0

One issue on which opposition has somewhat been able to corner government has been the issue of Kashmir. Opposition has been criticizing the govt. since last 4.5 years by accusing the govt. of having no Kashmir policy.

On the face of it, the charge seems legitimate with constant turmoil in Kashmir for some reason or the other and political developments in last 4 years which kept it in constant media reportage sometimes accentuated by the disproportionate media attention that the region receives due to the multi faceted and far reaching nature of any new development in Kashmir. BJP spokespersons seem to be on backfoot while debating over Kashmir and often resort to historical nature of the problem and asking how a 70 year old problem can be solved in 5 years. This does not cut the ice with the Indian citizens which elected this govt. to have a clear policy to achieve tangible results vis-a-vis Kashmir, Terrorism, and Pakistan as all three are interlinked to a certain degree.

No govt. can claim to have a consistent policy on Kashmir as it is a conflict zone and unexpected events can happen which need to be dealt with without thinking long term consequences whether it is the kidnapping of former CM, Mufti Syed’s daughter or fallout after the killing of HM Commander Burhan Wani, or actions of certain officers while dealing with hostile violent mobs. Still there is a larger framework and goals under which govt. formulates its approach in Kashmir. To understand Narendra Modi’s govt. policy towards Kashmir, we need to divide the policy in two parts – one, approach towards Kashmir and the other, approach towards Pakistan and terrorism.

Approach towards Pakistan and Terrorism

Narendra Modi got elected on the planks of zero tolerance towards terrorism and tough stance on Pakistan. The first thing Narendra Modi did after getting elected was to invite Pakistan PM, along with other SAARC heads, to the swearing-in ceremony. May be to give a message that he is not as hardliner as media and opposition portrayed him to be or to give a signal that he wants peace or to pacify the minority community of the nation by inviting the head of an Islamic State. Whatever be the reason, one thing was clear that he was ready to give peace a chance.

Narendra Modi, in the subsequent months, took multiple initiatives for peace whether to unexpectedly fly down to Lahore to attend Pakistan PM’s private function, or allowing Pakistani officials to visit Pathankot to collect evidence after terrorist attacks in January 2016, sometimes at the risk of personal political capital. The bonhomie between the two heads seemed to be working with Nawaz Sharif getting more vocal against the ISI and Pakistan Army activities in Kashmir and on the need for action against terrorist groups operating on its soil.

However, the cowardly attack in Uri by Pakistan supported terrorists changed things drastically. 19 brave soldiers were martyred while they were sleeping in their tents. It sounded the last nail on the patience of Narendra Modi for Nawaz Sharif to act. India retaliated with “pre-emptive” surgical strikes on terrorist posts and launchpads across LOC. This signaled a major shift in India’s policy towards Pakistan and terrorism.

This policy has continued since then where India has not only refused to talk to Pakistan but has also used every forum and medium to expose Pakistan. PM even went to the extent of raising Balochistan issue in his speech from the Red Fort during Independence Day. The stance has completely changed from Ultra Passive to Ultra Aggressive.

In the meantime, much has changed in Pakistan since then. Nawaz Sharif’s removal from PM post via court order and subsequent jail sentence. Election of a new PM who promised “Naya Pakistan”. Despite various efforts by Imran Khan to bring Narendra Modi to the table, India remained unmoved.

India was proven right in its stance when Pulwama attack happened barely 6 months after Imran Khan rose to power. This time India retaliated with “preemptive” Air Strikes deep into the Pakistani territory at Balakot to eliminate terrorist camps, thereby making it clear that India will now be consistent in its policy towards Pakistan and is ready to escalate its fight against terrorism. India refused to bow down and get ready for talks despite immense pressure from within and outside the country.

Govt. has decided to walk the talk on “Terrorism and Talks cannot go together”.

These ups and downs in last 4.5 years makes for one interesting observation. Narendra Modi, after coming to power, tried resetting the relations with Pakistan as he put a lot of effort for peace but once it was clear that nothing is going to change, he took a muscular approach and refused to entertain any suggestions of softening the stance whether from opposition parties or civil society.

Approach towards Kashmir

The same resetting can be seen in case of Kashmir as well. BJP formed an alliance with its ideological counterpart, PDP, based on common minimum program, which was reached at after 3 months of discussions and negotiations, despite various voices opposing this “unholy alliance”. Mufti Syed took oath as CM and there was relative peace and progress in J&K for the 9 months he was in power before his unfortunate death in January 2016.

After this unfortunate incident, again long discussions were held between BJP and PDP for 3 months before installing Mahbooba Mufti, daughter of Mufti Syed, as the first woman CM of the state.

Soon after Mahbooba Mufti took office, Burhan Wani, Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, was killed in an encounter with security forces. The govt. completely failed to control the aftermath and it spiraled quickly out of control to start a fresh resurgence of militancy in the valley. Pakistan, Separatists, Politicians, everyone added fuel to the fire to serve their selfish interests.

While the Central Govt. gave free hand to the security forces to deal with terrorism, the state govt’s soft stance and non-cooperation was making things difficult on the ground. After 2 long years of bickering and blame game with situation getting worse, BJP finally broke the alliance citing Mahbooba Mufti’s failure to work as per CMP.

Since then, security forces have been able to eliminate many of the terrorists and few districts have been declared terrorism free. The Central Govt. was also able to successfully conduct the local Panchayat and Municipal elections in the months of Oct-Nov last year. Although the mainstream local parties, NCP and PDP, boycotted the elections, it has resulted in a good atmosphere as the elections were fair and free from fear or any terrorist attack. Despite boycott calls from separatists and terrorist groups, the elections saw a decent turnout of between 30-50% in most of the places.

So if we analyse this series of events in Kashmir, two things become very clear – one, army has been given a free hand to deal with the terror groups, and second, the Central Govt. is committed towards a fair and fear-free political environment in the state. It has used the last few months to let army go all out against terrorists, work on the development needs of the region, and to crackdown on the separatists and frontal organizations of the terror groups, without facing much retaliation from the local populace.

With talks of assembly elections to be held along with general elections, if the new govt. does not stock the separatist feelings as has often happened in the past, given the terror free environment being created by the security forces where new local terrorist recruitments almost down to zero and political cleansing being undertaken through crackdown of separatists, there seems a possibility of lasting peace in Kashmir.

Narendra Modi’s govt. approach is very clear – it wants a lasting peace in Kashmir, and not a short term band-aid, for which army will have to be given a free hand while dealing with cross border terrorism and Pakistan; political space would have to be recreated within the state for the development and betterment of the citizens; feelings of alienation would have to be addressed among the local populace. The govt. seems to be working on all of these with scope for improvement in all. But it seems to be on right track.

So there it is, Narendra Modi’s govt policy for Kashmir. Next time, someone asks you the question, tell them this long term policy and how it seems to be working.

Agarkar is better batsman than Tendulkar: A liberal with his MDAPYC logic argues

0

Rajendra jee was very excited last Sunday when I met him, knowing him so well I was sure he would have got some krantikari narrative for me.

“Do you know, Agarkar is a better batsman than Tendulkar?”, he said after few minutes of our formal conversation.

“What?” I exclaimed “Kuch bhi? I know you like these weird theories but this is too much”.

Rajendra jee says he is empathetic and democracy lover yet he is critical of anything which the Indian mass loves, he lives in United states, the capital of Capitalism yet he criticizes Ambani & Adani , he says he hates corruption yet he supports Lalu and Gandhi family against Modi, he calls himself liberal yet he hates a set of people who love their thousand year old culture, he has good collection of books yet has narrow view point of everything, he hates Bollywood, says it is too over the top action/emotion yet loves it when Jack Bauer does super hero stuffs in 24. In short, the typical hypocrite which is loved by few big cities wanna be individuals.

Anyways, this theory was a bit too much even by his standards. I asked “Enlighten me sir about this Tendulkar/Agarkar thing.”

He counter questioned me, “Which ground is Mecca of Cricket?”

I replied, “Lords”.

He said “Correct! and do you know what is the average of Tendulkar at Lords? A meager 22 with no century.” After a pause he continued, “and Agarkar averages 111 at Lords with 1 century, this is the reason.”

I said, “It’s okay for one specific ground but this is not the only criteria to judge a batsman, I am sure on other several criteria Tendulkar would be much ahead.”

He said, “It’s my opinion that only this criteria supersedes all other parameter. This is my dream of Cricket.”

“Ok then do not put your opinion as fact. You have heavy followers on Social Media, who knows some Krantikari Yougsters would buy this theory”. I said

“And?” He asked.

“This will agitate Sachin Fans”, I said.

He laughed, “Ok , you mean the bhakts? ha ha ha. I hate them and I will definitely put it to irritate them.”

“Then couple of hot head will abuse and you will get good chance of playing victim. Right? Plus golden opportunity to brush all the Tendulkar fans with same brush.” I said sarcastically.

He was not prepared for this. He said, “Leave this, you will not get it. Anyways I have got couple of offers to write blogs from media houses.”

“Great. Which one sir?”

“Well NDTV and WIRE. I need to decide which one to write for”.

“I am sure you would do good in both. Chalo sir, bye for the day. Good Luck with your MDAPYC” I said moving ahead, he asked, “What does that mean”?

“Manipulating Data As Per Your Convenience but you know what? people are much smarter than what you think, bye see you next weekend”.

Ram Janmabhoomi beyond law and politics

0

The Ram Janmabhoomi movement has always been touted as a political phenomenon by the mainstream media and considered as merely a land dispute by the judiciary. Additionally we have the liberal intelligentsia in this country that will put forth frivolous and superficial proposals like building a hospital, school etc. at the disputed site instead of a place of worship. I believe there are two sorts of people who will suggest something like this: (a) those with ulterior motives; or (b) ignorant individuals pretending to be intellectual. These are the kind of people who will not give away even an inch of their own property/land for a good cause but they expect others to do so.

This issue only has two facets: (a) scientific; and (b) cultural. The scientific issue has been discussed in detail by the Archaeological Survey of India in its findings and only those with specific technical expertise should delve into this matter. As per my knowledge the findings of ASI are in favour of Hindu petitioners. But the real controversial issue out here is the cultural aspect which I believe is not given a serious consideration by the educated people of this country. Most of us parrot the line of the intellectual elites in demanding a hospital or a school on the disputed site.

It is imperative to realize and understand that the demolition of Ram Mandir by the barbaric invaders is a piece of culture and history that we have lost in the most brutal fashion and it is essential to regain it if we wish to progress as a nation. If we look into the matter from a proper perspective it will clearly show that the Hindu petitioners are not demanding to build a Ram Mandir but rather demanding to rebuild the Ram Mandir. It is my belief that if it were to happen we could see commencement of a Hindu renaissance in this country which is much needed at the present time. This issue cannot be seen from a trader mentality to simply calculate the profit and loss arising from it. This issue pertains to a cultural narrative and not a balance sheet.

I have no hesitation in stating that the demand of Sunni Waqf Board reeks of arrogance and intimidation. It is on similar lines to how the political parties and separatists in Kashmir deploy arm twisting tactics to get what they want. The Babri Masjid holds no religious importance to them but there certainly is a cultural aspect behind their demand. It is an extravagant display of exhibitionism and further an attempt to insult Hindus and Hindu culture.

During all the discussions that I have seen w.r.t Ram Janmabhoomi movement on television or internet I have come across another ridiculous proposition. This proposition is often put forth by those who our media would like to term as “right wing”. They state that Hindus should get the disputed land for rebuilding the Ram Mandir and in return Muslims should be given a piece of land somewhere else to build a large and lavish mosque with government assistance and funds. This is by far the most ridiculous proposition that I have heard.

Anyone proposing such an idea has no understanding of the issue and is willing to bend backwards just to “settle” the issue. It is like suggesting that in case my land is illegally grabbed by someone and if I want it back I will have to arrange a land somewhere else for the illegal occupant. Is this settlement or extortion? We should remember that in such a deal the illegal occupant will always come out as the winner. We are a democratic country where the rule of law should prevail and not the rule of compromise.

Lastly I would like to reiterate that rebuilding of Ram Mandir at the disputed site is extremely critical for a Hindu renaissance in this country. We should remember that the destruction of Ram Mandir was more than just material damage to a property. It was destruction of cultural heritage and a symbol of subjugation. I am by no means suggesting that Hindu renaissance should mean exclusion of other communities or faiths in India. But we need a cultural identity for Indians so that we can understand what it means to be an Indian and that cultural identity has to be Swadeshi.

Predicament of the Indian Pacifists

The morning of the 26th. The clock struck ten. The journalist of “The Liar” was still in his bed. He had spent the better part of his night writing an article on “Hindu terror”. At last, he had completed the arduous task, and essentially proved that the Hindu terror was a threat not only to India, but also to the world! Feeling accomplished, he had feasted on the beef curry and went to sleep at the dawn. He enjoyed his early morning siesta.

Suddenly, the phone rang. He fumbled for the receiver, and then answered with a vexed “Allo!”. “Comrade, Lol salaam”, the voice said, “Have you heard the news? The air strikes?”. It took the journalist a while to come to his faculties. Perplexed, he finally replied, “What strikes? Let me get back to you.” He replaced the receiver. “What has the Hindu nationalist govt. done now?”, he fancied. He turned on the TV, scrolled through the news channels, and finally switched to his favourite- DNTV. The news flashed- “Indian jets crossed the LOC and carried out an Air Strike in Pakistan”. Several thoughts raced all at once: “What is the proof?”, “They will win the elections now”, “We want peace!”.

Nervously, he paced up and down in his living room. He was enraged by this act of the extremist Hindu govt pouncing on the peaceful govt of Pakistan! “We are a nation of non-violence, we are Gandhi’s India!”, he murmured. He recalled a wise comment made by a brainy politician, not so long ago: “Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from Islam!” And to use violence on a benevolent nation that follows such a noble faith! Shame! He was infuriated. “I must protest this”, he said to himself. He picked up his MacBook, and started typing his new article. The caption read: “Violence is not the answer. Here’s why”.

Why do our politicians politicise even our armed forces?

Why are we like this? Will we ever change? Do we care for the morale of our armed forces at such a sensitive moment? After Uri, we had the cacophonous spectacle of the opposition which drummed up support with Lutyen’s Media eagerly joining, questioning the surgical strike claimed by Narendra Modi dispensation. Editorials were written and OPEds galore that it was a con job from Modi government, just to boost its sagging morale amidst the cracks in Modi juggernaut. There was little realisation that what was being challenged was the credibility and delivery competence of our priceless defence forces.

And then slowly ‘evidence’ started trickling out, after all there was a surgical strike and it was a brilliantly planned enterprise with our forces returning without a single casualty ‘or even a scratch’. So much so, even a film got made and the opposition started changing its tune. Oh! We never questioned the legitimacy of our devoted forces. We expressed ‘ our deep-rooted suspicion of the political masters who had their axes to grind’. And then the clincher from Congress. Come on, what is new about Surgical strikes! It is old hat. Manmohan’s government performed it several times but kept dignified silence as these are not meant to be shouted from rooftops. How well they pivoted with their media paratroopers.

And now after Pakistani Pulwama Perfidy, leaving behind 40 dead bodies of Central Reserve Police Force personnel, the questioning brigade has gone ballistic at the supposed surgical strike at Balakot. Initially, when the surgical strikes were quietly announced as ‘non military ore-emptive action’, the opposition too joined in congratulating the Indian Air Force for ‘its clinical efficiency’. Wow, it was surprising to see no evil in the intention of Modi government or hear no evil. Just for a few hours, until Pakistan responded with a foray beyond the Line of Actual Control with their F16 fighter jets and claimed to have hit ‘military targets and installations’, it was time for the opposition to pivot again.

They remembered that with 2019 elections round the bend, it was too close for them let Modi have his way and say. And, Boy O Boy, when Abdhinandan Varthaman chased down an F16, shot it down (with proof of Armam weapon system which F16 alone can carry) and he became a captive of the Pakistani army, the opposition got really jittery. And when Modi accomplished the return of Abhinandan, in 72 hours, citing Geneva Convention, the opposition had to do something fast. Their own variant of a surgical strike.

Well, they said that Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan was playing ‘a sagacious peacenik’. Release of Abhinandan was hailed as a gesture of goodwill and Pakistan was trumping India on the propaganda front internationally. Who told ‘them’ this? No one knows. No kudos for Modi’s men and diplomats who burnt the midnight oil.

Be that as it may, the battlelines have been drawn between Modis army and the Mahagatbhandan’s . Caught in between is the armed forces. Shameful. Posers have been raised Where is the proof of a surgical strike at Balakot? Not a crow died and even the one carcass found was too old to have been bombed out, they quoted Pakistani social media? How can you claim 300 terrorists were finished when not one body was found on site? ( no one claimed). Media access to select few has exposed the Balakot strike for what it was, a humongous drama to reap possible electoral dividends, the opposite chimed in unison.

The Government’s response, muted and when the military personnel said, “They select targets with design and go for it, and they never count the chickens”. Mr.P Chidamabaram loudly protests that the Modi government was exploiting the armed forces, which must be kept ‘above politics’. When Modi retorts that the opposition was being disloyal to the nation, they protested , “Come off your high horse. We only seek proof. Why get angry at us?”

It is singularly unfortunate that out selfish and self centred politicians are incapable of raising above politicking. Just compare the vile exchanges between our politicians with this motto of our Armed Forces, “The safety, honour and welfare of your counry comes first, always and every time. The honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command, come next. Your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and every time”.

Why cannot we simply trust the forces when they say what they say. Forget the political masters, do we need to doubt the legitimacy and credibility of the armed forces who sacrifice their lives and limbs so that we may live and thrive in peace. Should we drag down the one institution that has given its all, whenever called in, be it war or peace time? Shame.

Women-led development

Women is a full circle. Within her is power to create, nurture and transformer. Nari shakti is a concept that has existed in Indian culture since time immemorial. Women has always been portrayed as the epitome of Shakti, able to accomplish that which man cannot.

This, however, is only one side of the picture. The flip side is grim scenario of women having no voice in their own lives, live alone the decision of family. There aspirations were not considered important enough to be encouraged. There hardship were submerged in their responsibility as mother, wife and daughter.

This facet of Women’s life has goes major transformation in recent times.

The modern women is no longer confined to the four wall of the house. Women are realizing their worth in every way and demanding gender equality and justice both in home and workplace. They have broken the glass barrier in almost all field, be it technology, space science and armed forces. Almost every fifth women is an entrepreneur.

In recent years, government has played a significant role in bringing about the transition. Right from recognizing the need to protect the girl child in the womb to protecting career women in their work place, a number of initiative have been taken. Scheme like PM Matru Vandana Yojana given financial protection to women during their pregnancy and lactation period. Programmes like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and Sukanya Samridhi Yojana take care of girl child, also Ayushman Bharat, National Nutrition Mission, Ujjawala Yojana etc take care of health and nutritional requirements of Indian women.

These schemes definitely empower women- socially, educationally and financially.

Road of development cannot be traveled without the empowerment of women who form almost 50% of Indian population. A multi-directional organized approach to women empowerment is sure to take the country way beyond the path.
