74th year of Indian independence day

0

At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom,” said the first prime minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Yes, we were free and independent from the people who ruled us for 200 years. The freedom struggle was long and a difficult one. Our forefathers had sacrificed a lot of blood, aspirations, and lives for what we are today. I wish you all a very happy Independence day. This day is very special for every Indian irrespective of the community we belong to.

Talking about independence, it was an outcome of multiple stakeholders ranging from Mangal Pandey who lit the ignition of 1857 revolt; Rani Lakshmi Bai, Annie Besant; social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, Grand Old man of India Dadabhai Naoroji; the trio LAL-BAL-PAL; revolutionaries like Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose; the Gandhian Camp along with Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel and many more. The list is never-ending if one starts counting. It was the collective effort of all the freedom fighters which helped colonial India become Independent.

India was born as a start-up in which frankly, nobody was interested in providing an Angel Funding. With a huge population and diversity, the pioneers of the world said India would not be a successful country and will disintegrate into chunks of small nations soon. On the contrary, here we stand, a country with the longest constitution of the world which hasn’t failed even once; a country with the fastest growing and the 5th largest economy of the world. Once India was a huge finished good exporting country but the colonialists slowly converted us to a mere exporter of raw materials. All the finances and expenditures of the colonial government were paid from the Indian revenues. Dadabhai Naoroji coined this as a theory of the Drain of wealth

Few Achievements

India was an agricultural economy in the 1950s, from being pathetically dependent on the USA for food grains to the largest food supplier of the world, our agricultural economy has outgrown. A lot of this is credited to our former PM Lal Bahadur Shashtri for unleashing the path of the Green revolution. Even today, Indian is one of the few countries where most of the subsidies and government schemes are related to the development of farmers and agriculture. Politically, there have been numerous reforms ranging from empowering local bodies(Panchayati Raj Institutions/Urban Local bodies) towards more decentralized governance; inclusive development considering Civil society organizations as major stakeholders, and more. There have been numerous reforms for the socio-economic development of the socially and economically backward classes of SC/ST/OBCs establishing equality in the society. Judiciary has played a major role in giving equal status and opportunities to women and other sections of the society by landmark verdicts like decriminalization of section 377 of IPC(LGBTQ community), scrapping of section 497 of IPC(Adultery), women’s claim in parental property and more.

In the global world, India’s stature has risen from being a neglected one to a major pillar in international politics. Recently India was also elected for the non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council. Since the cold war era, India has followed a non-alignment policy(NAM) due to which it is called the voice of poor and developing countries. Countries look up to India for major reforms in the UNSC and global forums. From FATF’s grey list to protecting the borders from neighbors the world sees India as a major voice of Asia countering neo colonialistic policies.

In the field of technology, India has achieved a lot too. Major contributions of ISRO and DRDO like manufacturing indigenous weapons, being a nuclear power, major space missions like Mars Orbiter  Mission, and Chandrayaan, the technological industry has grown. India has developed a huge IT sector, which has helped in the development of new generation technologies like the Internet of things, Artificial Intelligence. Thanks to technology due to which we are actually able to survive during the pandemic.

India has also emerged as an important player in the management of COVID19. In spite of having a low expenditure on health, India has been able to keep the fatalities as low as 1.96% and a recovery rate of 70.76% until now. With a population of more than a billion and high population density, it is actually not easy to keep the numbers this low. India has helped other nations by providing essential medical equipment like PPEs, ventilators, and hydroxychloroquines.

Where do we lag and need reforms:

In spite of so many reforms in agriculture, we hear a lot about farmer suicides and poor ranking in the global hunger index(102/117). More reforms have to be done for promising a better socio-economic future for our farmers. The government should focus on Direct benefit transfers, elimination of intermediaries, promoting livestock farming, aquaculture, and other allied sectors for doubling the farmer’s income. With high levels of malnourishment, more has to be done towards food security. Talking about the weaker sections, “Most of the persons who are engaged in manual scavenging, unfortunately, more than 95% of them belong to the weaker sections“. Are those people the only ones who need to bear this responsibility? Think!

In the society we live which is still patriarchal, we hear frequently about critical issues like rape and domestic violence. Now is the time for gearing up from Women Development to Women-led Development. Gender equity has to be established in society by increasing the role of women in every aspect may it be technology, governance, or education. The New Education Policy has to focus on the holistic empowerment of the youth, the taboo about sex education has to be eliminated. If a parent wants her girl to be safe, strong and empowered, they also have to make sure they are imparting the same knowledge to their sons.

The political empowerment of India would be mature when voting behavior is changed. The vote base has to improve. That one vote matters a lot in our vibrant diverse democracy. Communal harmony has to be maintained by the development of scientific temperament(as said by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Dadabhai Naoroji). In Bhagavad Geeta, Lord Krishna says that religion guides an individual for better code and conduct of life and it has to be updated/modified with changing times. Secularism is one of the core philosophies of our constitution and it has to be sustained with peace and harmony.

In spite of the political tussles between the centre and state governments in our country, the fight towards the novel Corona Virus marks a hall of fame for Cooperative federalism, which the fathers of our constitution aspired for. May it be the wars, famines, communal riots, natural/manmade disasters or politicization of sensitive issues, we as a nation have outperformed every time. In the end, on this day of independence, we must promise to give our future generations a society which is empowered-socially, economically, politically and technologically, where we rank top in the gross happiness rankings, culturally diverse and last but not the least we are united and integrated as always.

Former PM late Atal Bihari Vajpayee once said, “SATTA KA KHEL TO CHALEGA, SARKAREIN AAYEGI … JAAYENGI… PARTIYAN BANEGI… BIGADEGI… MAGAR YE DESH CHALTA REHNA CHAHIYE, IS DESH KA LOKTANTRA AMAR RAHNA CHAHIYE”.

JAI HIND!!!

Work from home

0

According to Wikipedia, work from home can be defined as a work arrangement in which employees do not commute or travel to the central place of work. Not so common term for work from home is Telecommuting. Work from home is trending for the past 4 months, courtesy Coronavirus. IT industry already had the experience of it but other sectors like education, healthcare(Telemedicine) and more are getting equipped with it slowly.

Talking about the legality of the term, there is no legal provision for Work from home in our country i.e there are no set of rules and regulations that industries could follow as a template.

The following could be set out as the advantages/prospects of WFH during COVID times:

  1. Bridging the Technological Gap: Most of the government spending has been diverted to setting up Technological infrastructure in rural areas that lacked access to good internet(Bharatnet) and electronics.
  2. Reduced Travel time & Accidents: According to World Road Statistics(2018), India recorded the highest number of road accidental deaths. Thanks to WFH that its ratio has declined/paused and the time of travel is also saved.
  3. Less Carbon Emission and saving of Petroleum(whose prices are still rising): This would help India fulfill her Nationally Determined Contributions(NDCs) for climate change. Also, India imports more than 80% of its petroleum hence our Foreign Exchange could be saved.
  4. Sectors other than IT getting equipped with WFH: In case of any future pandemics, sectors would be ready to tackle economic consequences.
  5. New COVID allowances coming up: Caring about individual problems like lack of internet, light issues, etc, companies are provisioning employees to have a network without disruptions, inverters, and equipments(chairs, tables) that comfort the way of working.
  6. WFH, the only key to Education: Right to Education could have been at stake completely if WFH did not exist. Most schools and colleges have started online sessions either via video conferencing or Youtube.
  7. Few savings by Corporate companies: WFH has saved the light bill and other infrastructure maintenance bills for companies.
  8. Economic Benefits: Indian economy is floating on WFH. If it didn’t exist, we would have had major economical setbacks.

And the following are the possible negatives/cons of WFH during COVID times:

  1. Cybersecurity: Corporate companies need to have strong cybersecurity since most of the confidential data would be at stake if not taken care of.
  2. Home is not always a happy place for everyone: Unfortunately, many women in the country are facing a shadow pandemic. Some women actually prefer going to offices to avoid such situations. Hence WFH may not be sweet to them.
  3. Difficult for Few Employees back in rural areas: WFH requires few technological investments and for some employees that belong to rural areas, they might not be able to fulfill all these requirements(irrespective of money constraints) as it’s not that easy to acquire a wifi connection in villages.
  4. Educational Drawbacks: For some teachers teaching from home, especially those of Science which require experimental approach may face problems in explaining the concepts. Secondly, for so many years, teachers have been adapted to blackboard teaching. This sudden shift might be a cause of concern, especially for school teachers.
  5. Increased working hours: WFH which was meant to establish a proper work-life balance is not the same. Employees whose average working hours were supposed to be 8 is no less than 10 and in some cases, the count goes on increasing(which unfortunately has become new normal). A study found that working too much may lead to lower productivity of the employee.
  6. Mental Health: With more workload and an increased number of hours, its not easy for a person to give fair time to his/her personal life. Working too much can take a toll on your mental health. A study found that workers who logged 11 hours per day were more likely to battle depression than those who logged 7 to 8 hours.

The problems and prospects do exist in every situation. What’s important is what more can be done to convert the problems into opportunities and prospects into success:

  1. Meditation & Exercise: Fitness and mental calm is the most important thing that can help an individual maintain a proper balance in every aspect of life. Also, one thing that we should not forget in COVID times that it helps us build a good immune system. Junaid Ahmad(AIR 3 UPSC) once said “if you have a very good personal life, trust me you will have a very good professional life as well but vice versa may not always be true. “
  2. Legislative Backing for WFH: It’s important that the government should come up with a fixed set of rules and regulations like the number of working hours, remuneration for extra work, etc.
  3. Don’t Forget Children: For parents, it’ important that they do look after the studies of their children. It’s also important to engage in some activities(indoor games)/discussions with children.
  4. Sleep: Indeed it’s very important to take a good amount of sleep for better efficiency the other day and for a happy mood as well.

Women have been working from home for ages, no matter its corona or a national emergency. One should learn how they manage everything so well may it be work, household chores, or children. All we need to do is appreciate and contribute(help) a little. Also, all those working from home deserve applause since it’s they who are also contributing in continuing the cycle of our economy. So, Work for the nation, meditate for your mind, and exercise for your health because pandemics will come and go but WFH is always going to stay from now on. We the people of this country have to make sure we use Work From Home for greater inclusion and as a perfect opportunity to bridge BHARAT(Rural) & INDIA(Urban).

The history of hatred

The wealth of India attracts invaders since ancient times.

326 B.C: Alexander the Great is turned back from assaulting and conquering Indo-Gangetic plain by mutiny in his armies, scared stiff of battling another giant Indian army with war elephants. Chandragupta Maurya kicks out the Seleucids from Gandhar; Menander, Bactrian Greek king a.k.a Milinda discusses Buddhist philosophy at length with Panho. The next people to invade India are the Sakas; the great king Kanishka becomes an eager follower of Indian religious beliefs. The Huns invade and assimilate as ‘Chouhans’, succeed as fighting and ruling people, strengthening the fabric of Indian social structure. Islam changes all that.

644 A.D : India is the richest, most populous, industrious, productive, tolerant, scientific, spiritual, peaceful, stable, and successful confederation of proto-feudal nations on Earth. By standards of the savage times, it’s paradise on planet.

Savagely insisting on own superiority, blind to beauty of peaceful civilisations, a colonising people, urged by a ‘holy book’ which commands and commends slaughter, mass slavery, and institutional abuse of women bursts into India. Conversion at sword point, death, or tribute is what they offer, refusing to co-exist or assimilate into Indian society and culture. Never before or since is such tyranny, oppression, hunting children, kidnapping women, sanctified murder, ruthless exploitation and brutal ‘reprisals’ inflicted on any land at any time.

They believe mercy is a weakness and compassion is cowardice – Prithviraj Chouhan let Muhammad Ghory go free following first Battle of Tarrain according to rules of Dharma Yuddha; he comes back, defeats Prithviraj, blinds him, tries force-feeding him cow meat, and very likely sells Sanjukta and his daughters into slavery and rape. Every treaty breaks, every truce is defiled, every promise is worthless, every kind gesture meets with vicious violence. They call anything beyond Islam ‘Dar-ul-Harb’ – house of war, total war, war by any means, war to extinction, war of annihilation, war for death and slavery, war in extermination of culture, war unmatched in sheer relentless hate. They don’t just kill you, they try to erase any memory of you or your culture; they don’t just subjugate you, they humiliate, gloat, and deliberately rob you.

Indians keep on doing Dharma Yuddha, honourable to the last; dying is nothing to Hindus, they are born as sacrifice to the motherland, a debt of soil that turns to warrior blood seeking death before dishonour.

1757 A.D : Ahmad Shah Abdali declares “city of Mathura is the holy place of the Hindus, let it be put to the sword, up to Agra leave not a stone standing.” 10,000 Jats from Brij, their prince Jawahir Singh in lead, stand in their way and for 9 hours kill wave after wave of snarling Muslim hordes who break upon Jat steel like cyclone driven surf against granite mountain. They take 12,000 rabid dogs with them to the afterlife, and Muslims savagely sack Mathura. “Everywhere in lanes and bazaars lay the headless trunks of the slain. The whole city was in flames and the water of the Jumna was bright red with blood.” gloats a Muslim writer.

Bijapur Sultan Ali Adil Shah I visits Vijaynagara in early years of his reign, is greeted with great pomp and glory by Aliya Rama Raya. He offers great gifts, honeyed trade relations, and his diplomatic soft words lull Hindus into sense of complacency while he forms ‘Muslim Confederacy of the Deccan’.

1565 A.D : On 23 Jan, day Subhash Chanrda Bose is born, Ali Adil Shah I corrupts two Muslim commanders in Vijaynagara army at Battle of Talikota; reverting to true nature of Traitor, they attack and behead Aliya Rama Raya who treats them like ‘trusted allies, comrade in arms, friend, and brother’ to the second before Muslim swords chop and hack into him. It takes years of extreme effort to raze Vijaynagara, capital of last Hindu Empire. Robert Sewell laments “With fire and sword, with crowbars and axes, they carried on day after day their work of destruction. Never perhaps in the history of the world has such havoc been wrought, and wrought so suddenly, on so splendid a city; teeming with a wealthy and industrious population in the full plenitude of prosperity one day, and on the next seized, pillaged, and reduced to ruins, amid scenes of savage massacre and horrors beggaring description”.

1201 A.D : Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khilji attacks universities  Vikramshillah and Nalanda, thinking such great buildings must be forts. His men slaughter hundreds of saffron, yellow, or red clothed ‘soldiers’ with shaved heads, piling mountains of scrolls and parchments into giant bonfires, stating ‘if the books paid homage to Allah they are unwanted extras, if not about Allah they are kindling.’ Thousands of years of art, literature, science, architecture, philosophy, religion, culture, music, medicine, statecraft, and history burn brightly for days.

1000 A.D : Gandhara of Hindus, where every second big stone is a Buddha statue, Jain tirthankar, Hindu deity, Greek and Roman god, noble ruler, beautiful women, and Buddhas of Bamiyan is now Kandahar. The mountains blocking passage to Central Asia are called “Hindu Kush” from tens of millions of Hindu women, children, and skilled labourers perishing on way to jam-packed slave markets in Bukhara and Samarkand – so many they are sold cheap in job lots. Al Beruni is frustrated because Hindu science and technology retreats out of his grasp and fount of ancient knowledge – concept of zero, Indian numerals, algebra, spherical globe, sophisticated geometry, advanced chemistry, plastic surgery, decades-ahead metallurgy, astronomy, astrophysics, sexual technique, aphrodisiacs, even chess and moral fables – can no longer be tortured from captured and enslaved Brahmins.

1568 A.D : Chittorgarh commits “ Jauhar ” before Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar sets foot in citadel, stepping over corpses of every Hindu male in the fort fallen in battle facing front, for home, heart and honour.

Muslim slaveholders by Shariat law can rape any enslaved female in his possession regardless of age, buy or kidnap unlimited number of slave girls, sell enslaved children whenever he wants, beat women for refusing sex, share slave women with other men, and requires ritual washing after raping to ‘cleanse’ himself of ‘filth’ from an ‘infidel’ woman. They are legally encouraged to kill women by burying them to the waist in ground with a crowd of Muslim men stoning her for ‘blasphemy’, ‘lewdness’, or ‘adultery’. Free Hindu women prefer “ Jauhar ” to the ‘harem’, die by poison rather than submit to Muslim men, marry when children in hope of safety, keep under veil and seclusion, and to escape abduction and gang-rape gladly ascend to glorious “ Sati ” on funeral pyre of husband.

400 years Hindus defeat every Muslim army attacking India; some say Muslims in final desperation herd cattle before their army because Hindus won’t fire on holy cows and bulls and are then easily massacred, they desecrate temples with cow blood and throw rotting cow carcasses into sacred pools to damage Hindu morale, and pretend to surrender and submit before stabbing in back.

1947 A.D : Muslims and Hindus are roughly equal in weapons and fighting men, Hindus are finally angry, and for once British Raj is not intervening when Hindus are winning. Butthurt Begum Tassaduq Hussain wails about 90,000 Muslim women missing in Partition violence, Nehru government can only force about 200 Muslim women from Delhi to go back to Islamic Pakistan, and Jats in righteous vengeance send every Muslim they see on permanent peaceful journey to Allah. For a while, Pathans attacking Kashmir sell captured and enslaved Kashmiri Muslim women and children to Muslim men at Muslim slave markets in West Punjab, paying sales tax to Muslim Pakistani administration.

No arrangement, no accommodation, no business, no compromise, no covenant, no cultural exchange, no co-existence, no ‘live and let live’, no mutual friendship, no Memorandum Of Understanding, no peace, no reconciliation, no terms of agreement, and no word of dialogue is possible with Muslims when Islam is in power. Muslims are cancer – foul, bloated, corrupting, suffocating, insidiously creeping, and always lethal.

It is, as it has always been, a survival war since Rasul Muhammad declared ‘paradise is in shadow of swords’, between Muslims, or us Hindus. Only one will survive, and I’ll be damned and dead before I submit to circumcised pigs.

Nepotism in stream light with Sushant Singh Rajput but it must end now

0

Sushant Singh Rajput put Bollywood nepotisim in spotlight. But feudal sites with the power to break young careers have been the hallmark in the musical Gharanas. Bollywood is so obsessed with nepotism and it has been shrunk to a limited banners like Dharma, YRF, T-series, Balaji to name a few. If someone messes with any of them or with their dear ones he will get thrown out of the industry doesn’t matter how talented he is. So they are just like dictators in Bollywood. What makes Bollywood so unfair to the outsider so much isn’t just the dynasties and cliques. It is essentially the fact that it is brutally a competitive game with no umpires, adjudicators or whistle blowers. It has long been an open secret that the film industry establishment prefers to promote its own progeny and their family and friends.

One may rightly argue that it is a free country and a producer and director have every right to choose the talent he may like to work with. Gone are the days when actors are known to be artists their aura served as a light to many and their art was not only a source of entertainment but an inspiration to many. But now a days actors with pure talent are sidelined due to first priorities given to recommendations. And the worst part is that if an outsider tries to raise his voice he is slammed, crushed and denoted a wannabe seeking action. Bollywood has already set in with no good scripts less good actors and almost no experimentation,

It is not only fair to blame Bollywood for the nepotism we don’t focus on talented actors. We should support the self made stars who came into Bollywood after so much struggle go and watch their movies make it blockbuster. Boycott the movies of star kids whether it is good or bad. It is simple if we can give fame and stardom to nepotism product then we can bring them down too.

Sooner the Indian audience will realize that are no more interested in drama presented in the name of big directors and actors. They have now Amazon and Netflix which will replace the boring drama with interesting ones. The nepotism has been raised in Sushant Singh suicide case but it must end with Rhea Chakarborty penalty. Sushant came to this industry as a game changer a unique talent was destroyed because of silly nepotism games and business of movie mafias. We have lost a big talent and decency in this industry of arrogance.

महेंद्र सिंह धोनी: A natural leader

Thank you Dhoni.

Delayed today, disaster tomorrow

Global temperatures are on the rise. With the increase in levels of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, we are putting ourselves on the backfoot in the fight against climate change. Climate change is an existential crisis for human beings, and knowing the intricacies of climate change and acting to mitigate it is a civic responsibility expedient upon everyone.

But acting on a cause requires knowledge about the cause. People largely act according to the majoritarian sentiment prevailing at the time. The media is the largest creator of public sentiment. Unless amplified by the media, issues of great public importance stand the threat of being lost in the background noise. Early examples of global warming discussions and negotiations are a fair example of this.

The first warnings regarding climate change began emerging more than five decades ago in the 1960s when the first reports about the potential threat of fossil-fuel induced global warming started surfacing.[1] In 1965, the report on “Restoring the Quality of Our Environment” by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Science Advisory Committee warned of the harmful effects of fossil fuel emissions, stating that an increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide could act, much like the glass in a greenhouse, to raise the temperature of the lower air. A report in 1968 by the Stanford Research Institute warned of the negative impacts that warming earth could expose humans to.[2] The call for climate change grew stronger through the 1970s and 1980s, culminating finally in the formation of the IPCC and the bringing out of the decisive First Assessment Report that categorically warned of a growing greenhouse effect and laid out the potential threats of such warming. [3]

A conversation around climate change had clearly begun.

However, the salient feature of this climate change discourse was its relatively closeted nature. The discussions were taking place within a community of scientists and policymakers, largely belonging to the Western world. Moreover, communicating a threat that you cannot perceive is always a difficult proposition. Human psychology is such that it tends to prioritize the challenges that it can materially sense in the near-term. The media cover concerns that are of immediate interest to the public and those that are being discussed by the decision-makers. Climate science is also a complicated subject and as journalists point out, scientists do not communicate about climate change in a jargon-free language, which could make it difficult for them to cover the issue.

Media coverage on climate change in India was almost absent throughout the late 1900s and early 2000s. A backtracking analysis of the media coverage around climate change from 2000- 2015 shows that from 2000 to 2010, there was barely any coverage on climate issues in the national media. A couple of international media sites were carrying stories of how Indians are unaware of climate change which is most likely to affect them. Throughout 2010, India-related climate coverage was large to be seen in international media like BBC, The Economist, The New York Times, Financial Times, etc.

Over the first half of the next decade, climate coverage remained sporadic, picking up pace only after the UNFCCC discussions on climate change in 2015.[4] In May 2015, southern India was also hit by a deadly heatwave that took the lives of nearly 2000 people within a matter of days.[5] This occurrence jolted the national conscience and the media began talking about the impacts of climate change. Voices linking the heatwave to climate change were still tentative, but the idea had taken root. Post the 2015 Paris Agreement, coverage around climate change picked up phenomenally and there was no looking back.

The Coronavirus pandemic has shown us that we need to take action on pressing problems before they grow out of control. Climate change is a far larger problem, and once it truly hits home, reversing the situation will be far more difficult. We need to act continuously on climate change mitigation. But the pandemic has resulted in a lowering of the climate change reportage and as a result, driven the issue out of public minds.

Articles on climate change published in the last 4 years were scraped using the API offered by ‘The New York Times’ at https://developer.nytimes.com/. Following is the visual representation of the data scraped:

The visualisation shows that discourse on climate change has dropped substantially during this pandemic. If we look deeper, we find that the conversation from March to June for the year 2020 is significantly less than in 2019, far below the noise level.

Today the situation in India is akin to the global trend as can be seen in the figure demonstrating coverage on climate change in an important Indian daily below:

With each passing day, we are losing time on survival. It is not the survival of the planet that is at stake, the planet has seen far worse. It is the survival of the human civilization as we know it, which will not be able to absorb the shocks from the changes we are going to see by the end of the century.

Journalism can play a vital role in spurring greater action on climate mitigation. The media came out on the top during the pandemic; their 24*7 coverage kept citizens informed and played a vital role in moulding behaviours around hygiene and self-isolation. The media can positively impact action on climate change, both from governments and citizens. We need even more conversations on the impacts of clean energy and energy security on mitigating climate change. Going forward, the instances of extreme climate events will become the ‘new normal’. More awareness, discourse, and debate on climate change problems and more importantly, solutions, is the need of the hour and it is that which is ultimately our way out of this crisis.

How much do Indian Americans matter in the race to the white house?

0

At last, the United States has two wrestling teams (Democrats Biden +Harris and Republican Trump +Pence) in the ring with the political punches already flying high in the media. The political mudslinging will get into full steam in the weeks ahead with elections on November 3. The winner in the race to the White House will be decided by about 90% U.S. born electorate and the remaining 10% naturalized citizens. Of that, a very small percentage (`0.5%) of Indian Americans are eligible to vote in 2020. Admittedly, every vote matters but do Hindus in America need to be blindly passionate for either candidate and sacrifice Hindu unity, humility, and mutual respect?

To put things in perspective the immediate past Presidents included Clinton (1992-2000); Bush (2000-2008) and Obama (2008-2016) and Trump in 2016. The political relations between the U.S. and India have gone up and down in various administrations, sometimes like a tidal wave. The first major recognition of India’s talent came about during the Y2K bug when the U.S. feared that the world will come to an end at the turn of the century. The then-President Clinton sought help from India’s IT professionals and even visited India. That was the turning point that I saw unfolding firsthand while serving as a policy analyst in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. We survived the Y2K triumphantly and India’s talent came in the limelight with many entrepreneurs leading their startups. The rest is history with many CEOs of Indian origin heading large companies today. Ever since the Indian American community and India as a nation has been steadily rising and shinning.

With respect to U.S.-India relations, these are large “business” decisions-what when, and how the U.S. can increase its market share in India and how each country benefits politically/diplomatically. Mostly, India has been interested in satisfying her appetite for high-end warfare equipment and nuclear and space technology, etc. driven by, at least in part, the ongoing border conflict between India and Pakistan. I don’t believe that the U.S. has any likes or dislikes for India except what and how it serves the U.S. interests. That is in fact what every President, first and foremost, must do. I don’t expect it to change much in the foreseeable future with Trump or Biden in the White House.

Since Modi became Prime Minister, the U.S.-India relations have improved. It started with Obama and continued with Trump. Why? It is in part because of India’s strong geopolitical standing in the world community. In fact, India’s relations globally are very strong. Another reason for the U.S. leaning toward India is because the U.S. and China are at odds due to the ballooning export from China hurting the U.S. economy. The U.S. dependence on the manufactured goods from China got out of hands and China’s espionage activities for the U.S. intellectual property escalated many folds. The pandemic originating in Wuhan and China becoming the world’s supermarket for necessary PPE during the pandemic was a rude awakening globally. China’s expansionist policies in the South China sea and offering loans to the in developing and under-developed countries in exchange for gaining control of their markets are beginning to threaten countries far and near. This is a very important geopolitical global issue and India is a hedge to China’s expansionism and ballooning economy.

Suddenly, India became an important ally in the eyes of the U.S. with its huge consumer market, the potential for manufacturing with relatively low-cost labor, and the availability of skilled youth. The increasing prominence of Indian Americans in the last two decades for their talent, political outreach and ambitions, and personal financial prowess has also pushed India’s standing in the U.S.

Today, Hindus in America (Hindus is an all-encompassing term to include all believers in Sanatan Dharma) are as opinionated as ever but more divided in their political leanings. I perceive that Hindus belonging to Republican ideology are better organized with ongoing support from Indian leaders to turn the tide in favor of Trump. It is all for good reasons such as Trump clamping down on Pakistan, wanting to scuttle China’s influence globally, and the heightened chemistry between Modi and Trump. Modi’s extraordinary visit to Houston later reciprocated for Trump in Ahmedabad were exemplary events making their friendship far more visible. Yes, the current political climate suggests that Trump’s victory is in India’s interest. But, do we know how long that may last, and at what cost? How much can we trust Trump or Biden coming to rescue India, if needed, in the future? I say that Hindus should not go all out for either candidate in a hurry.

Biden’s announcement of Kamala Harris as his running mate, a half Indian, brought an interesting twist in the race to the White House. Trump and many of his supporters right away got into badmouthing her; not unusual in politics. A group of Hindus is going as far as calling Democratic-leaning Hindus “stupid.” Hindus not voting for Trump are being labeled anti-Modi and supporters of Jihadism, terrorism, and Islamization. Some misguided folks have resorted to mixing political ideology with Hindutva. One person on a chat group wrote, “ Not sure why some people I earlier thought were very pro-Hindu and pro-India and I had high respect for them suddenly fell in love with the traitor half-Indian half black lady who is anti-India?” Putting political ideologies aside, Kamala Harris came from very humble beginnings, rose through the ranks as a strong leader in her own right, and if elected, she will be the first half-Indian, half-black woman to occupy the second-highest office in the U.S. It calls into question and brings shame to our principles of Hindutva calling a person of her stature a “traitor.”

Obviously, there will be only one victor in the race influenced by a razor-thin margin due to Indian American votes. As educated as Hindus in America are, they should respect individuals for who they are and not swayed in name-calling to others with opposing political ideologies. It is unfathomable that the association of a Hindu with any political ideology makes her/him a lesser Hindu or defines the person being pro- or anti-Modi. An eligible American Hindu has the right to vote whomever s/he deems appropriate. Being a zealot Republican or Democrat is a sign of progress among Hindus; persuasion through arguments to change one’s ideology is fine but undue pressure is unwarranted, uncalled for, immoral, and unethical.

There is no reason to color the contentious election with the color of skin, ancestry, and gender of Kamala Harris. In fact, the election is between Biden and Trump; why drag her or Pence in it. Let the political process go on like the debates focusing on the U.S. economy, issues like immigration, plans for America to recover from the pandemic, and foreign policy, etc. When possible, let us ask the hard questions about their stance on the disputed Kashmir and the terrorism originating in India’s neighboring country. Let us focus on substance rather than judge any of them based on their gender, color, and/or political affiliations.

American Hindus have far bigger issues to fry and fight for which necessitate unity, not divisiveness. We must fight jihadism, terrorism, Hinduphobia, and anti-Indianness. The political rhetoric, name-calling, and mudslinging are part of electioneering between candidates which I don’t appreciate but have no control. The past performance is no guarantee for continued good behavior by any President, and the election promises and statements may not mean a whole lot after the election because of the fast-changing political environment globally. So why any Hindu should put all eggs in one basket now. Let us stay alert to both wrestling teams and their ideas and ideologies and cast vote wisely when the time comes. As a Hindu, I am a believer in Modi policies and stick to pro-India thinking but that does not mean that my decision to vote in 2020 can/will/should be swayed and influenced by any misguided person supporting a certain political ideology. Only arrogant people ask who you would vote for.

Let the wrestling continue; watch how politics shape up between now and November; use persuasion over pressure about your political ideology, respect each candidate for who they are but not promote divisiveness by labeling one group being lesser Hindus than the other, and any candidate being a traitor. Reinvent your humility and let the chips fall where they may. We are merely about 1.2 million voters of Indian origin including Hindus and Hindu haters. We should ask the question- should Hindus have strong unity against Hindu-haters rather than the hate politics dividing us?

How Bollywood actors are a bad example of population control in India

0

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s pregnancy announcement yesterday suddenly triggered some thoughts about population control in India all over again. Their announcement came a day before the eve of Indian Independence Day and so I was taken back to last year’s Independence Day speech by our Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mr. Modi had addressed the Nation and urged its people to actively participate in population control. While I wish the best for Kareena during her pregnancy, I can’t hide my dissent at the fact that it’s Saif Ali Khan’s 4th biological child!

Most Bollywood actors have wrongly been iconized by Indian youth. While some actors such as Sushmita Sen, Akshay Kumar, Lt. Sushant Singh Rajput, to name a few, are truly inspirational, others are mostly overrated. Sadly, it’s the overrated ones who are more idolized. This system of idolizing is even more worrisome because people (mostly uneducated ones) follow them, their style, their actions, their words, their toxic ideologies, and their bad habits.

Just like Voltaire had said, ‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ These Bollywood celebrities are always visible to the common man, all thanks to the useless paparazzi. That calls for these Bollywood people to be more responsible in whatever they do. But they have mostly chosen to do things which are inappropriate. Whether it is endorsing fairness products, or cigarettes, or gutka-khaini. Even if we ignore that, how in the name of humanity can we ignore illegal actions such as drunken driving and running over beggars sleeping on the footpath, or illegally owning guns. Why should we ignore the fact that ‘Star’ Shah Rukh Khan chooses Tony Ashai as an architect, who desecrates Indian sovereignty and the Indian Army? Were all other architects of the world dead?

Anyway, now with that background let’s now come to the issue of population. Some Bollywood celebrities are horrible examples when it comes to family planning. Saif Ali Khan is about to have his 4th biological child, Shak Rukh Khan has 3 biological children, Aamir Khan has 3 biological children, Anil Kapur has 3 biological children, Boney Kapur has 4 biological children. They must either be ignorant or arrogant as hell to actually have so many biological kids.

Raghunath Dhondo Karve, a mathematics professor and social reformer from Maharashtra, had started talking about population control way back in 1927 in the Marathi magazine Samaj Swasthya. Even after independence, India has been urging people to voluntarily participate in population control. But it is still a work in progress. While we blame lack of education in rural areas to still cause population increase, I’d say it is high time Bollywood celebs be blamed for the population increase in areas polluted by the influence of Bollywood. Such rich Bollywood celebs, who can easily afford contraception, choose to have one baby after another. I wonder why they do not feel any shame in doing so. Moreover, since they do not feel any shame in setting a bad example in society, it high time India tightens its fist and takes stricter action.

Measures like no government job are clearly not working. Bollywood celebs clearly don’t need government jobs. So more drastic actions are required to control the population. And in a democracy, what can be a better measure than permanently suspending the voting rights of couples, along with their children if they give birth to more than two children (triplets born should be exempt from this punishment). They can still get Aadhar card and be citizens of India. But such irresponsible people should not be given the responsibility of choosing something as important as a Government. Moreover, total fertility rates should not be used in India. Birth from each individual (ie. both man and woman) should be used. Because clearly we have proof that multiple marriages are another reason for the birth of more kids.

Saif Ali Khan, Aamir Khan, and Boney Kapur all have two kids from their first marriage and they are just the representatives of our society at large. So, a new rule should be brought in, wherein each individual should be allowed to have only two biological kids to retain their voting rights. If they already have two kids from a previous marriage, they have to choose between having more kids and retaining the voting rights of themselves and their existing two kids. Only by imposing such a harsh punishment can we control the population growth in India.

These people take the liberty at criticizing the Govt. of India even when it takes good decisions such as CAA and NRC, but when it comes to doing their part, they show a complete disregard of their responsibilities. Honestly, India has been plagued by overpopulation and these Bollywood celebs are not helping. India, now more than ever, urgently needs to take care of the economy, environment, education, and defense. Endorsing population control is something that prominent personalities should take up now. And they have to set an example with their life. Because it is better to take care of the population ourselves than let the Govt. take a harsh decision and take care of it for us.

Why handling success is more difficult than achieving success

0

Success is something everyone looks for when one starts any work or performs any duty. It’s the natural tendency. Generally, it happens so because of two reasons; (I) most of us don’t know how to accept failures and therefore fear of it. (II) while looking around, time and again we have felt that success means everything & if we don’t succeed in what we do,we would be let down by the society.

It’s obvious that getting success (of our satisfaction level)is hard but handling success is even harder & that’s the uncommon fact. One can understand it in many ways; most easily and practically by applying the reasons on oneself. In the 1st category,We find many individuals who even just find the way/path by which they can succeed, they become relaxed&feel as if they have achieved it.

2nd category is most important, which majority of youths belong to. This category consists of the people who succeed but as soon as they achieve success, they develop a kind of attitude and sense of pride in themselves. They start devaluing others more often than not. This is so common now a days but “not-so-commonly-felt”. If their one or two decisions prove right, they consider themselves as superior and as someone who can never go wrong with their decisions. And therefore, they reach at a saturation point only after succeeding once or twice. They may still maintain a higher position of which they would have thought to achieve, they may not downfall but most sadly and importantly, they seize to develop. In process they loose many trust worthies who contributed in achieving them success and they never find such kind of people again in their life. Hence this is also one of the major reasons they don’t get a success of higher level.

In 3rd category, there are very few people who know how to handle the success. These kind of people remain unaffected by the noise of their success. They just withdraw the positivity from their last success, add it and move on to achieve some bigger targets with the confidence of the added positivity of their various success.

/\.’;lIn the contemporary India, two of the great examples are our beloved PM Shri Narendra Modi ji and Sachin tendulkar ji. Even after achieving more than what their contemporaries achieved, they work harder to get more and more, unaffected by the noise. Hence, they became supreme in their respective fields.
