Delayed today, disaster tomorrow

Recent reports point out that India is set to witness a radical increase in tropical cyclones, thunderstorms, heat waves, floods and droughts in India unless climate change mitigation measures are adopted rapidly. But surveys in the past have suggested that Indians continue to be sparsely aware of climate change and its consequences. Any impactful change can only occur when there is consistent pressure from the bottom up, and raising further awareness around climate change is therefore an agenda of immense importance. As the coronavirus pandemic has lately proven, the media plays a vital role in shaping public opinion and modifying public behaviour. Our article, 'Delayed Today, Disaster Tomorrow', makes the case that the Indian media landscape as a whole can see the climate crisis as a window of opportunity and use its centrality to educate the population, eventually giving rise to a public movement in favour of greater climate mitigation actions.
