Stubble burning: A classical case where cure turned out to be worse than disease

0

Is making new law the only solution?

As winters approach each year, India awakes to the problem of stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana leading to pollution in Delhi and NCR. The intensity of noise gets compounded if political dispensation is different in the Centre viz a viz Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and UP. Neem Hakeem Khatra-e-Jaan is an old saying which explains the current situation which in fact is a result of governance myopia wherein long run consequences and resultant fallouts were ignored.

But the core issue is as to how stubble became a zero utility item. After all, not only rice but all crop residues were multi utility items for the farmers. For this we need to understand the changes that have taken place in agri scenario for last four decades or so.

Food Security

1970s saw the Govt encouraging the farmers for switching from their traditional crops to boost production of rice and wheat to ensure food security. The conditions in Punjab and Haryana were ideal, fertile land, adequate land holdings, hardworking farmers and water availability. No wonder the area turned out to be granary of India in no time. But we forgot that everything has cost attached to it especially if we lack proper planning and foresight.

Depletion of Water Table

Within first decade itself something very shocking occurred i.e. water table started going down. It was most ironical that land of five rivers was talking of deficient water; It is something like Ambani suffering malnutrition!

New system of paddy-wheat cycle caused unprecedented exploitation of groundwater for irrigation. First alarm was raised as early as 1979 when groundwater levels started falling in central Punjab and parts of Haryana. By early 2000s the situation assumed grave proportions and was flagged by Central Ground Water Board.

From Frying Pan into the Fire

With the alarming crisis of falling water table staring at their face, Punjab State Farmers Commission (PSFC) was established in 2005. PSFC prepared a draft legislation prohibiting rice cultivation before notified dates suggesting it as only measure to stop water depletion since delayed sowing of paddy will take it as close as possible to monsoon. Hence, Punjab enacted a law in 2009 banning the sowing of rice before a stipulated date. Haryana too followed suit.

Remedy Turned out to be Worse than the Disease

Delayed sowing resulted in the farmers getting a smaller period for harvesting. Prior to this law, farmers had enough time before planting wheat while now they were only getting window of 2 weeks. Since they did not have enough time to prepare the field between two crop cycles, they claim that farmers are forced to burn the stubble. Weeding the straw meant additional costs (just see the diesel price) and labour rates are very high.

Village Eco-System

Crop residues were an important and integral part of the village eco system. It had multi utility, used as fodder, heating/cooking, for dunnage/ bedding in sheds, making of ropes, thatched roofs, added to cow dung for manure etc. While rearing of 4-5 cows/buffalos was a common sight for each household in the village, however this is no more the case. Breaking of joint families, shrinking of landholdings, disappearance of common grazing lands and mechanization are few reasons for this shift. Changed cropping pattern due to new water laws accentuated the problems of continuous fodder for animals.

More Problems Follow

The delayed cropping pattern has reportedly resulted in various diseases in plants resulting in increased use of chemicals which have direct impact on health. Since the period before sowing of wheat crop is only 15 days, it does not give any recuperation time to soil hence farmers tend to use more chemical fertilizers. By and by the soil has started to lose its natural fertile content thus forcing farmers to be totally dependent on pesticides/ insecticides and hence further increasing their input costs.

Where do we go now?

Last week Govt announced that a new law will be enacted to tackle pollution in Delhi and NCR. But does the solution lie in this? Are we trapped at a point of no return? Or will it take us from a bad situation to an even worse situation? To my mind to overcome the problem we need to take few measures over a period of time.

Back to Basics

Perhaps ‘makke di roti aur sarson da saag’ is one of the most important answer i.e. going back to the basics. Encourage cultivation of alternate crops like, Maize, Millets, Pulses etc as these require less water. Cultivation of Basmati variety be preferred for the same reason. Crop diversification is must.

Govt should come up with assured procurement of alternate crops and ensure that farmers get equivalent profit as of rice.

Utilisation of River waters

We need to harness full potential of river waters of three eastern rivers (Ravi, Satluj and Beas). New canals needs to come up to ensure complete utilisation of river waters with aim to reduce dependence on underground water.

Have Ceiling Limits

Fix the ceiling of landholding where rice can be cultivated say 30% and on remaining 70% land sowing of only alternate crops be permitted. But Govt will have to put in procurement system in place first for this.

Limit Power Supply

Some regulations and costs on power supply should be planned and implemented.

Promote Horticulture, Agro Forestry

Horticulture and agro forestry needs to play major role in sustainability of resources. This will decrease water stress to a great extent.

Micro Irrigation and Rainwater Harvesting

Bambi culture’ has to go; let there be no doubt. Basic techniques of rain water harvesting should be adopted both at individual and village level.

Fodder to Gaushalas/Dairy Farms

Option of giving the fodder to various Gaushalas or to Dairy farms should be explored.

Political Willpower?

The biggest question is whether we have political willpower to resolve this self created mess or will there be lip service only?

Conclusion

Treating stubble burning as a case of pollution does not give us the holistic view of the issue. It also points out our ignorance of understanding resource sustainability and perils of not taking all stakeholders on board in policy formulations.

The Indian State of Left Bengal– Desensitized

“Delhi Police hai hai”, “Delhi Police Murdabad”, “We Want Justice”, “Doshiyon ko saza do”, “Amit Shah jawab do”, “Amit Shah murdabad”.

These were the slogans chanted during the protest march on 18th June of last year. This protest march was jointly organized by all the Sikh Gurdwara Committees and other prominent Sikh Welfare Societies in Kolkata to express their rage against the brutal assault by Delhi Police of a Sikh auto driver in the Nation’s capital Delhi. More than hundred 100 Sikhs participated in this march as they were furious. At the end of this march a Sikh can be heard giving a speech in Bengali and I quote, “Amra gorbo kori k amra poschim bangla a achi, ekhane police er kono julum nae, ekhane aaj obdi amra police k dekhi ni kono Panjabi k ae rokom bhabe rastae chure marte”. It means that we are proud to live in West Bengal and we have never seen the Bengal Police beating any Sikh like this on the streets, he continues to say that we will be giving in memorandum to the Governor and if we do not hear back then we will go to Delhi to protest. And here we are, after 18 months full circle, on 8th October a Sikh was assaulted by the Bengal Police during a BJP Yuva Morcha rally to the state secretariat. Surprising and sadly the same Sikh Community leaders was nowhere to be found and I wonder why?

Was the victim not a Sikh this time? Was he not assaulted by the Police? The answer is yes, but it didn’t happen in BJP led state one way or the other. Instead of giving the victim their benefit of doubt they started putting posts on social media justifying the police action. Surprisingly their speech started by thanking the state government for the donations and tax concession given to the local Gurdwaras and ended by condemning the BJP leader for politicizing the issue. I agree that Bengal Police did say that they allowed the arrested Sikh to tie his turban before he was taken to jail but that does not change the inhuman behavior of the Police.

Some people were very concerned as he was carrying a gun that could lead to injury or death or untold violence but the same group would not utter a single word when the tyrant party kills their opposition party workers.

How come the same Sikh Community leaders did not take out a protest march this time? let alone condemn the police assault and putting him behind bars on false charges. Finally a BJP leader from Delhi flew to Kolkata to the rescue (something that they claimed to do a year back) and they even had problem with that. Suddenly they started writing open letters to him cautioning him to not meddle with Sikh Community matters in Bengal.

He did not say “Kolkata Police hai hai” or “Kolkata Police Muradabad” or “Mamta Banerjee jawab do”, instead all he did was give a memorandum to the Governor, praise the land of Bengal and the Chief Minister and requested the Chief Minister to meet with him to clarify and resolve the matter. Bengal Police eventually dropped all the charges against the Sikh and he was released because the charges of him carrying an illegal on unlicensed arm were proven to be false and then a handful of Sikh Community members came out for the photoshoot to claim the credit. I mean if this is not be hypocrisy and the height of double standards then I don’t know what is.

But it isn’t just the Sikhs who turned their back on their people but almost everyone else in Bengal did except for a special minority community and again you know who they are, they are more known for something else but the one thing that everyone undermine is their Unity, but that is a discussion for some other time. Coming back to the issue at hand, we have been witnessing, hearing and reading about riots, political murders and many social injustices in Bengal for so long that it does not affect us anymore and trust me this is something that we should be very concerned about.

Riots are something very common in Bengal and the most recent one that I can recall are the Telinipara riots from May of this year. The only reason for those riots was that some Hindus put a barricade to stop those entering the area that tested positive for COVID because they refused to follow the lockdown instructions. As expected their homes and shops were looted and then torched, bombs were hurled by the mob and the only action taken by the police and the state government to stop these riots while still happening was somewhere between zero to none.

Go back one year and you can find something similar happened in May of 2019 in village Bagakhali under Bishnupur block of Diamond Harbour. “Hindu Families In West Bengal Flee Their Homes After Mosques Call For Non-Muslims To Be Killed” says a report from Swarajya.

In the year 2013 there are 106 instances of communal violence in Bengal as per Wikipedia. But the desensitization of Bengal is not just limited to assaults, murder and riots, it even extends to the festivals and culture of Bengal starting with Durga Puja.

I would not have been surprised if the state government would have prohibited the Pandal hopping completely citing COVID as the reason while some other community was allowed to celebrate their festival, now of course It didn’t happen because the election is just around the corner. The reason I can say this because they tried to do something similar in 2017 when the restriction was imposed on the immersion of Durga idols the day after Vijay Dashmi, of course the High Court ruled out against restriction stating “People have the right to practise their religious activities, whichever community they may be of” and the fact that majority of Bengali stayed silent when this restriction was imposed and some had to go to court just to celebrate their festivals as they should and not as per the order given by the state government is astonishing.

But that wasn’t the only attack on Hindu sentiments, before that a very known minister in Bengal was appointed as the chairman of Tarakeswar Development Board, he did step down from the position after the backlash from the opposition party, again not from the common people. I understand that we live in a secular country but why this secularism is pushed and promoted only one way is beyond my understanding.

Remember Basant Utsav in Rabindra Bharati University from this year? If you don’t know what I mean then just glance at the pictures below because I have nothing to say except how proud Rabindranath Tagore would be after watching.

All of the above mentioned is happening so often and frequently that we don’t get shocked or surprised or show any form of emotion to such incidents anymore and we simply move on to the next page on the newspaper. If there is anything that has affected Bengal residents more than COVID then it is short term memory loss, we forget and ignore things very quickly and as per the doctors it often happens due to brain injury, illness or due to the effects of drugs or alcohol but all we need is a season of IPL or Big Boss and BAM! Who cares if their neighbor died yesterday?

Legal aid is matter of “right” not “discretion of state”: Arnab’s right

0

Right to consult a Lawyer is a matter of right- it’s neither the states discretion nor it should be done at mercy of police. Whether its Arnab or anyone else. This is a matter of right which can be claimed by anyone and one is entitled to get.

Article- 22 (1) of the Indian Constitution provides that every arrested person has the right to choose and elect his own lawyer to defend him in the court of law for whatever crime he may/ may not have committed.
Section- 41D of CrPC allows prisoners to be able to consult with their lawyers even during their interrogation.
Section- 303 of CrPC allows every alleged convict/ criminal the right to be defended by a lawyer of his choice even if the criminal proceedings against him have already begun.

Nandini Satpathy vs Dani (P.L.) And Anr.1978 SCR (3) 608 which held that it is essential to the spirit of Art. 22(1) that an accused be allowed to consult a lawyer during interrogation. Laying down this principle, the Court made two critical observations. Firstly, it acknowledged that a fair trial is a crucial facet to the rule of law, and the ends of justice can only be secured when the accused is allowed a consultation with a lawyer. Secondly, the Court took cognizance of the fact that in the absence of a lawyer, an interrogating officer has the ability to use coercive measures to draw out a self-incriminating confession.

Rights that are given to the citizens of India casts duty upon the state to protect those right. Now state cannot anyone from exercising there right that is ultravires in nature. Similarly Mr. Arnab Goswami is given  right to consult his advocate and if he is refrain from exercising his right then it is against the ethos and very idea of Article 22 of Constitution of India. This act of state is also frustrating the very of insertion of Section 41 D of Code of Criminal Procedure.

Understanding issues around Fake News

0

News, the word ”NEWS” is generally used for the statement of facts or information about happening of events, the news can be global or local or universal but news have to be fact based, not just a piece of mortal’s imagination, but does “NEWS” in today’s times especially by the Indian media houses represent the facts as is?, in fact nowadays there is a trend to end the news item with question mark (?). Does a question mark at the end of news item make it fact based or does it make the news item a piece of reporter’s figment of imagination which the reporter tries to instill in the minds of the readers.

In the Indian context the news reporting in good ‘older days’ used to be of the gold standards where there were only few media outlets like Doordarshan, in those days news reporting was restricted to presenting the facts before the people, at this juncture we might evaluate what does fact means, as per the technical definition the facts means the things perceived by the senses however when we consider fact as the item to be reported by media then we more often then not consider the fact as ‘truth’, this consideration isn’t invalid or far-fetched as the people of this country rather the denizens of this planet deserve to know the truth.

The common man of this country consumes news as a daily routine because he/she wants to know what is happening around him/her and he/she totally deserve to know and the society too has obligation to inform him/her the truth about happenings in society, its media which does this job and keeps the common man updated with society and probably for this reason it is often said that the media is the 4th pillar of democratic state. This supposed 4th pillar did well uptil the advent of 24 hours news channel and these channels didn’t came in single numbers there are plethora of such channels, in fact on scrutiny of available channels on DTH platforms, one can easily see that there are probably more number news channel than the movie or sports channels. The problem is not with the news channels running round the clock 24×7 but the problem arise when these (or some of these) channels whether out of gaining edge over the competing channels or out of the ulterior motive (driven by funding or favours from the rich and powerful organizations) tries or rather manufacture the news to serve their motives.

There have been plenty of instances where the reportage by a media house turns out to be false or if the reportage is not false in its entirety but therein elements deliberately introduced to cater a narrative of the which media house try to propagate, the reporter reporting such news piece cannot be said to be a reporter rather can be said to as an opinion influencer. In very recent times Indians have came across various fake news items whether it relates to attack on shops or inter community disturbances, these are not just isolated or very rare incidents, there have been a plenty of such false reports being generated and floated to the public at large.

We often wonder why these incidents of fake news keep on happening again and again, people often like to believe that these are borne out of genuine mistake or at most the over zealousness of the reporters who try to gain edge over the other reporters, but there might be something more severe than what meets the eye or what we presume. On most of the occasions the media outlet withdraws the false news piece and issue a meticulously drafted apology very minutely worded and that too put up at the non prominent place where the viewer might not be able to read it on a casual glance.

To the contrary there have been also instances where despite publishing a fake news piece the channel or media houses don’t even publish an apology rather they make vague explanation trying to validate their fake news item. More research into the matter of fake news generation might reveal shocking numbers giving a fair bit of idea of the extent of this plague. In 2018, the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India had the highest number of fake news propagation incidents compared to the rest of the country, with approximately 30 cases registered with the authorities. The whole country recorded a total of around 100 such incidents that year[1]

The matter does not end with the publication of false or fake news, on close scrutiny over the period of time one can observe that the fake news do subscribe to a particular narrative and it would be utilized by the narrative ‘experts’ to further their agenda, these experts are mindful of potential of social media to expose their agenda so they wait so that the controversy around fake news is put to rest and after the cooling off period (which may run into months) that piece of fake news is utilized to build and peddle the narrative, unfortunately the peoples memory do fade away rather quickly so such fake narrative also pass through un-confronted.

The purveyors of fake news prey on the vulnerability or partisan potential of recipients whom they hope to enlist as amplifiers and multipliers. In this way, they seek to animate people into becoming conduits of their messages by exploiting our propensities to share information for a variety of reasons. A particular danger is that ‘fake news’ in this sense is usually free – meaning that people who cannot afford to pay for quality journalism, or who lack access to independent public service news media, are especially vulnerable to both disinformation and misinformation[2]

Responsible viewers have time and again raised the issue to review and amend the existing laws to meet the challenges of generation and spreading of the fake news, but efforts by both policymakers and civil societies have not been very encouraging to address this concern in the era of highly opinionated people having access to information on mobiles. Media (or part of it) can now be said to a web of propaganda which try to push through their narrative, same piece of news is represented to the viewers in totally different colours by news channels of different ideologies and of course the context changes (or rather made to change) accordingly to further the narrative, just by style of reporting viewers can easily make out which ideology does a particular news channel belongs to.

How to curb this plague of fake news have many answers but the most frequently mooted idea is to bring the legislation, however, freedom of expression advocates fear that legislation will hurt the very democratization of information and opinion that new technologies have enabled to great extent, in some sense it is true that regulating legislation could be used to silence critical media so this is a double edged sword which has to be tread through very cautiously.

At this juncture following words of wisdom are worth pondering on –

A functioning press and democracy require criticism, transparency, and consequences for journalistic mistakes. They also require that we’re able to collectively distinguish them from lies and deception. Otherwise…real information will be painted as fake, and manufactured (rubbish) gets presented as fact[3] – Craig Silverman
News today still has to be accurate and fair, but it is as important for the readers, listeners and viewers to see how the news is produced, where the information comes from, and how it works. The emergence of news is as important, as the delivering of the news itself[4]

The term ‘fake news’ has a straightforward or commonly understood meaning that any news which is not genuine news is a ‘fake news’. This is because ‘news’ means verifiable information in the public interest, and information that does not meet these standards does not deserve the label of news. In this context, ‘fake news’ is an oxymoron which lends itself to undermining the credibility of information which does indeed meet the threshold of verifiability and public interest – i.e. real news. In ideal situation there should not be any curb on the independent media which is supposedly as important a pillar of the democracy as the other three pillars are i.e legislature, executive and judiciary, however, in the real situation the society and its institutions cannot stick their head in the sand like an ostrich, they have to be mindful of the growing plague and its potential fatalistic impact on the public at large and bring in the necessary regulatory framework to tackle the same.

The problem is not with the news channels running round the clock 24×7, but the problem arise when these (or some of these) channels whether out of gaining edge over the competing channels or out of the ulterior motive (driven by funding or favours from the rich and powerful organizations) tries or rather manufacture the news to serve their motives.

Otherwise…real information will be painted as fake, and manufactured (rubbish) gets presented as fact[3] – Craig Silverman                                                                                     “News today still has to be accurate and fair, but it is as important for the readers, listeners and viewers to see how the news is produced, where the information comes from, and how it works.

Analysis of propaganda and disinformation against Hinduism in India

0

Propaganda is a deliberate and systematic attempt to change perceptions, thoughts, and behavior. The goal is to achieve a response that furthers the desired intent of the propagandist. Misinformation is false or inaccurate information regardless of an intention to deceive. Disinformation is inaccurate information intended to cause harm. A person, group, or entity coordinates to distribute disinformation in a campaign. They usually conceal the true objectives of the campaign.

Propaganda and disinformation have become a part of the modern world. Every day we wake up to see thousands of fake news, social media posts, and videos related to propaganda. Religious or political affiliation is an indicator of the majority of the propaganda. The Newspapers are a major source of disinformation as others can cite them as a source. After a few decades, it becomes history when there is no one left to contradict.

“If you don’t read the newspaper, you’re uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you’re misinformed.”

― Mark Twain

The goal of propaganda is not only to push an agenda but also to create a cognitive bias to gain followers. When someone repeats the same lie for years, we start to doubt if it’s true.

“The point of modern propaganda isn’t only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth.”

― Garry Kasparov

The propaganda is already successful in creating cognitive dissonance among the Hindus. They are apologetic towards minorities despite facing persecution for centuries. The media reveals religion and caste only for minorities or backward castes victims. This is a tactic to create guilt and shame among the Hindus. Although many ignore propaganda, it is an effective tool to manipulate the masses.

Identity of the propagandists

A strong, centralized, decision-making authority produces successful propaganda. It spreads a consistent message throughout its structure. It’s easy to trace the network by finding the consistency in their messages. The black propaganda appears as a casual opinion or regular News. The lack of consistency makes the identification difficult. The propaganda against Hinduism has the consistency to the extent that it became predictable. For example, the propagandists will come up with environmental concerns for this Diwali.

The major entities that have vested interest in India are China and Pakistan. China is land-locked and is trying to get access to the Ocean. The debt-trap diplomacy of China is a strategy to gain military advantages. Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Pakistan received loans from China. The communists in India are the biggest asset for China in pushing their propaganda. Pakistan wants to occupy the entire Kashmir. They have several Islamists including student leaders, journalists, and politicians spreading disinformation. The Congress party wants to keep power within their family and can go to any extent to achieve their goals. The Islamists, Communists, and Congress (ICC) teamed up for their individual goals. They have major players of Indian media within their network. They spread propaganda when there is an opportunity, or create opportunities through disinformation. We can trace almost all propagandists back to the ICC group. So, this group could be the central authority that creates and spreads the propaganda.

Goals of the propaganda

The purpose of propaganda is to achieve acceptance of the propagandist’s ideology. Joseph Goebbels worked as the Nazi propagandist. He said that propaganda has no fundamental method, only purpose—the conquest of the masses.

The major goal of the propaganda against India is to tarnish the country’s reputation. They portray India as a land of riots, caste discrimination, communal hate, rapes, mob lynching, and intolerance. The propagandists want to malign the image of Hinduism through their campaigns. They not only weaken the country from the inside but also spoil our foreign relations. It can help them to cut external support in issues like border disputes and terrorism.

Whitewashing campaign

A formal whitewashing campaign has run in favor of Islam and Pakistan for a few years. The primary message of the campaign is “Terrorism has no religion.” Almost a decade ago, they flooded social media with this message. They still bring it up while discussing Islamic terrorism. The Hindus supported it and promoted it themselves. Most of them considered it as a friendly gesture towards the moderate Muslims. The ICC group made several attempts to show Pakistan in a positive light. They supported Pakistani cricketers, singers, actors, and politicians. Social activists like Malala Yousafzai promoted Pakistan as a safe country.

They ran some campaigns to spread the message that the hijab is not oppressive. The feminist groups promote the hijab as a right of Muslim women and they enjoy wearing it. They demand a boycott of restaurants serving non-halal food. It was an organized attempt to threaten food outlets with a boycott if they don’t meet their demands. Some restaurants claimed that all their food is halal which resulted in a backlash. They encouraged people to disown Indian identity. It includes taking offense to the slogans like “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai.” They even replaced saffron color from the National flag with Blue color in movies like Kaala.

The Bollywood industry and OTT platforms like Netflix helped them push the propaganda. The following are some of the themes used in popular Bollywood films:

  • Terrorism has no religion – My Name is Khan
  • Pakistan is fighting against terrorism – Tiger Zinda Hai
  • Secular terrorist – Raees
  • Innocent Pakistanis – PK
  • Innocent thieves & drug peddlers – Gully Boy
  • Secular Pakistan – Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Netflix not only runs propaganda but also gives opportunities to support it. They never shy away from it and attack in retaliation if anyone questions the same.

They showcase Islamic terrorists as militants & rebels to social activists and misguided youth. The ICC media covers up their crimes starting from robberies to terrorism. They justify crimes based on the background of criminals. In some cases, they portray victims as the perpetrators and blame them for the crimes. One section of the Indian media is standing up against such propaganda. But, their journalists face abuses, threats, and harassment.

Objectives of the propaganda

As they whitewash the crimes of some people, they try to portray some others as criminals. The same is true on an international scale. As they whitewash the terrorist activities of Pakistan, they portray India in its place. This is because India has more respect when compared to Pakistan in foreign countries. They want to portray Hindus as evil as Islamic terrorists to make things even. They create similar entities for the symbolism and problems of Islam. The following are the most prominent issues:

Jihad – Hindutva

Jihad became a synonym for terrorism as the Islamic terrorists often use that word. Now, the ICC group has established extremism in the form of Hindutva. The earliest idea of Hindutva was to promote India as a uniform country. The major aspects are a single language (Hindi), ethnicity, tolerance, and security. The Muslims couldn’t consider themselves as the converted Hindus. They used to take pride in claiming themselves as the successors of invaders. Moreover, they can’t accept all other religions as equal to Islam. These 2 reasons made them reject the idea of Hindutva. After all these years, the ICC group brought it up in association with terrorism. They started spreading disinformation to popularize the word.

Anyone can brainwash the West to consider something as evil if they compare it with Nazis. This is exactly what has happened with Hindutva. The Pakistan PM, Imran Khan, often uses the words “Hindutva,” “Nazi,” “Hitler,” “Kashmir,” and “fascist.” The masses in the countries like USA and UK couldn’t think and process any information as soon as they read Hitler. So, they assume Hindutva as an extremist ideology. They wouldn’t form a good impression if we compare something to Jesus Christ. This is why negative propaganda spreads faster than the truth. The ICC group is successful with similar campaigns in several other countries. After a few years, the term “Hindutva” became popular around the world as Hindu extremism.

Allah Hu Akbar – Jai Shree Ram

The official war cry of most of the terrorists on the planet, Allah Hu Akbar, is popular around the world. If someone shouts it in a flight, airport, or a busy street, it’ll create panic among the surrounding people. It may result in a fine, arrest, or even violent reaction from the security forces. There is no such war cry among the Hindus as Hinduism is a polytheistic religion and there are many Gods. The national politics in India revolve around the Delhi-UP-Bihar zone. The Babri Masjid’s demolition was the focal point of the current political scenario. So, the ICC group picked the slogan “Jai Shree Ram” as the war cry of extremist Hindus. What followed next was the flood of disinformation and fake news. The narrative would be Hindus beating up Muslims while chanting Jai Shree Ram. But, they failed to spread it on an international scale due to the lack of intended response.

Islamic terrorist organizations – Sangh Parivar

Islamic terrorist organizations are notorious for their religious extremism. The terrorist organizations like Al Qaeda, ISIS, JeM & Hizbul Mujahideen are popular worldwide. The ICC group portrays Sangh Parivar as the Hindu equivalents of Islamic terrorists. The Sangh Parivar includes BJP, RSS, VHP, and several others. They tried to blame RSS for the 26/11 Mumbai attacks but failed. Later, they ran a campaign to paint Narendra Modi as a fascist. Nowadays, they are creating communal violence to blame it on Sangh Parivar. The BJP is fighting against them as it could tarnish their reputation. This is their most important campaign and everything else contributes to it. The American TV series, Quantico, tried to portray Hindu terror in one of the episodes (S03E05). The episode portrays a Hindu as a mastermind behind a terrorist attack, to blame Pakistan for it. ABC apologized after outrage against Priyanka Chopra.

Islamic State – Hindu Rashtra

The Caliphate or Islamic State is the dream of many hardcore Muslims. They want the country to follow Islamic standards and enforce Sharia. The ICC group created Hindu Rashtra as the Hindu version of the Islamic State. They promoted it as the oppressive Hindu rule where minorities have limited rights. The web series Leila shows their version of the Hindu Rashtra. But, it received backlash over the poor script and plagiarism. They tried to use the concept of Akhand Bharat for this campaign. But, they dropped it as they don’t want to popularize anything related to Hinduism even by mistake. So, they chose Hindu Rashtra for the campaign and is often associated with BJP/RSS.

Religious intolerance

Religious intolerance is the trademark of Islam. No other religion comes anywhere close to Islam in case of intolerance. The blasphemy laws, no minority rights, harassment & bullying are normal in Islamic countries. The destruction of religious places of others is normal for Muslims and no one would condemn it. The destruction of shops and houses of Hindus in protest to social media posts is common even in India. The threat, kidnap, and rape are common means of forced conversions. The marital rape of underage girls is a common sight in Pakistan and Bangladesh. The ICC groups started a campaign to paint India as intolerant. Aamir Khan made an intolerance remark as a part of the campaign. They sent a letter to PM Narendra Modi in 2019 about the growing intolerance in the country.

The villagers in many parts of India are aggressive to burglary. As they are afraid of losing their livelihood, they tie the thieves to trees or electric poles and beat them up. They generally do it to create fear among thieves or out of anger. In some cases, the villagers themselves get arrested for the violence. The ICC group started reporting all such incidents as religious intolerance. They reported some of these incidents as beef lynchings if the thieves try to steal cows. This is a successful campaign on an international scale. A lot of people believe that there is a growing religious intolerance in India.

Discrimination and systematic oppression of women

Another major issue with Islam is the systematic oppression of women. There are many issues as follows:

  • Women are not considered equal to men
  • Husbands can beat their wives
  • Polygamy allowed for men
  • Child marriages
  • Triple Talaq
  • Nikah Halala

These are only a few examples of the discrimination faced by Muslim women. A campaign is running to showcase Hinduism as the most oppressive religion for women. Hinduism also has social issues like dowry, child marriages, and domestic violence. But, they are illegal and have strict laws against them in India. They run campaigns to paint Hindu festivals and cultural practices as oppressive. The feminist groups that run these campaigns promote similar Islamic practices. Many women consider it their moral duty to follow these groups to support other women. But, the same groups abuse women’s rights to push their propaganda.

They equate the hijab with ghoonghat to portray Hinduism as oppressive. But, ghoonghat is a cultural practice restricted to Western India. You won’t find such a practice in South India as there is a huge cultural difference. Even the festivals like Karwa Chauth have cultural equivalents like Atla Taddi. The cultural practices in Hinduism differ from region to region.

Several celebrities take part in placard campaigns to push their propaganda. For example, the word ‘Devisthan’ is unknown to most people in India. The Kathua rape & murder case has a placard campaign with Devisthan written as “Devi”-sthan. We can understand if the word gains popularity through an individual, a group, or an incident. But, that’s not the case in this incident. This hints at a private network with a central authority. They informed everyone about the campaign and gave proper instructions to spread their propaganda. Moreover, this shows the fact that none of them have any sympathy or respect for the victim. They have participated in the campaign only for their purposes.

Divide and rule

Islam has several communities like Sunni, Shia, and Ahmadi. The dominating community, Sunni, discriminates against others like Shia and Ahmadi. The discrimination is worse in countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh. The legal framework of India protects Ahmadi Muslims from others. In Pakistan, they are not considered Muslims and are not allowed to follow the religion. The ICC media portrays Islam as a homogeneous religion. The Congress party took extreme measures in their vote bank politics. They promised a hike in reservations and first right over the national resources. This distanced them from the majority of Hindus. But, they can’t come out of the ICC group and give equal status to Hindus. So, they started a campaign to split Hindus based on the caste system. Their slogan, “Jai Bheem Jai Meem”, represents the coalition of Dalits and Muslims. They wanted to form a majority through this coalition without stopping their propaganda. Jinnah and Mabedkar formed a similar coalition in the past. Jinnah promised a country for Dalits if Ambedkar helps him in the formation of Pakistan. But, he abandoned Ambedkar after the formation of Pakistan. They are using the same strategy again like the old wine in a new bottle.

Not in my name campaign

This is another popular campaign which didn’t last long. Almost all the terrorist groups on the planet are Islamic. But, the Muslims never condemn or disown them. Some people criticize the terrorist attacks with ifs and buts. But, they never criticize them for maligning Islam and using it to murder innocents. The ICC group ran a “Not in my name” campaign to criticize BJP and RSS. They called BJP and RSS the extremists who use violence in the name of Hinduism. These organizations don’t even use Hinduism in their name. The people started questioning the propagandists to comment on the terrorist organizations. They immediately stopped the campaign to avoid further damage.

Religious preachers

The ICC media writes the names of Islamic preachers and occultists as babas and tantrics. Sometimes, they don’t even mention the names of the criminals. They don’t write anything against people like Zakir Naik who has radicalized youth to join ISIS. This is a deliberate attempt to malign Hinduism. They continue this practice even after an outrage. Some social media influencers are pointing it out to create awareness.

Aamir Khan’s film, PK, is about a God-man who claims to contact God and pass his message to the devotees. There is no such person in the history of Hinduism. This is nothing but a satire on Prophet Muhammad who claimed to be a prophet of God without any proof. His non-Muslim Arab contemporaries and the Jewish tribes of Arabia criticized him. They gave him the derogatory nickname ha-Meshuggah (the Madman or the Possessed). Some critics think that Satan tricked him into adulterating a pure divine revelation. This could’ve been an inspiration for the “wrong number” sequence in the film. The Muslims would’ve wreaked havoc if he makes the film as a direct satire. So, he concealed it under the disguise of Hinduism. The reaction of Hindus disappointed Rajkumar Hirani. He even wanted to write a book about the film to explain it. Many Muslims still support the film without understanding the central theme.

Counterpropaganda

The political analysts, neutral media, and educated people often counter the propaganda. They question the hypocrisy of the ICC group and asked them to comment on other issues. The ICC group generally avoids questions related to other religions and Islamic terrorism. If people insist, they react by name-calling, shaming, and ridiculing. They use words like Bhakts, Andhbhakts, BJP IT cell members, trolls, and anti-nationals. They also shame critics with Gaumutra jibes. The ICC group continues to support Kashmiri militants and Pakistani terrorists. They react to criticism claiming that we call them anti-nationals for criticizing BJP. But, none of them explain why supporting terrorists is the same as criticizing BJP. They abuse the Muslim celebrities who stand up for communal harmony. They couldn’t tolerate these celebrities participating in Hindu religious activities. The group criticizes the neutral media as supporters of criminals and fascists. Many people counter disinformation. But, the counterpropaganda alone isn’t enough in controlling the propaganda and disinformation.

Defaming festivals, culture, and traditions

This is the biggest campaign running against Hinduism in India. Creating a confirmation bias is an effective way to spread disinformation. It works based on the belief system of the subjects. For example, if a person likes dogs, then we can vilify another person by saying that he tortures the dogs. It can evoke an emotional response as the person already has beliefs and values. The usage of themes like sexual harassment and pollution creates a confirmation bias. The themes used in their campaigns are as follows:

Festival: Holi
Theme: Sexual harassment, water conservation
Target audience: Women, Feminists, Environmentalists
Campaign slogan: Bura mat mano Holi hai

They portray Holi as the sexist festival where men go across the streets harassing women. They made a fake theory of semen filled balloons thrown at the Delhi University campus. The ICC group spreads such fake theories and creates outrage. Their feminist groups call for a ban on the festival. Such campaigns not only create panic among women but also normalizes sexual harassment. They also request people not to celebrate the festival for water conservation.

Festival: Ganesh Chaturthi
Theme: Water pollution
Target audience: Youth, Environmentalists

The ICC group attacked Ganesh Chaturthi for polluting water. Many people advised Hindus to use clay idols and avoid artificial colors. The Hindus well-received it and several organizations came forward to promote clay idols.

Festival: Dussehra
Theme: Oppression of women & Dalits
Target audience: Women, Feminists, Tribals, Tamils, Dalits

Many campaigns are running to ridicule Dussehra. The usual festival shaming campaign uses it to tell Hindu men to stop oppressing women. The festival celebrates the feminine energy in nature and encourages gender balance. But, the campaign ridicules the festival as the only time when Hindu men respect women. This is a crude generalization that spoils the theme of the festival. Another campaign is to portray the Gods as foreign invaders and the demons as the native kings. The portrayal of Ravana as a Dravidian king killed by an Aryan prince Rama became popular. There are many fanboys of Ravana who think that he is their own. A new narrative promotes Mahishasura as the tribal king and the Goddess Durga as a killer. We will see the supporters of Mahishasura soon if this trend continues. Some feminists protest misogyny in movies. But, they follow the groups that spread all this filth.

Festival: Karwa Chauth
Theme: Oppression of women
Target audience: Women, Feminists

Karwa Chauth is a cultural practice in Western India than a religious one. There are equivalents of Karwa Chauth in other regions of the country. The pseudo-feminists may not even know it. They only see the festival as an opportunity to push their propaganda further.

Festival: Diwali/Deepawali
Theme: Air pollution and Noise pollution
Target audience: young adults, Environmentalists

Diwali is the festival of lights. Hindus celebrate the festival for the victory of good over evil. The entire country celebrates the festival and it has higher participation of kids. It’s seen as a great opportunity by the ICC group to vilify and shame Hindus. Nowadays, many Hindus are pointing out the selective outrage over Hindu festivals. Many Muslims ridicule Diwali. But, they react with murderous rage when someone criticizes Eid. The majority of the Hindus accept the positive changes as long as it’s not a part of the propaganda. There are some initiatives to help local manufacturers during Diwali.

Countering propaganda and disinformation

Many people are awakening to see the true colors of the propagandists. Some people still fall for it as it aligns with their belief system. The group brainwashed many others for decades that it became their worldview. We should identify and counter the propagandists to stop them from manipulating people. We should stop fake accounts and impersonating accounts that spread propaganda. An active inoculation is an effective option against disinformation. We should dismiss false accusations and seek proof if they make repeated accusations.

There are several effective ways to tackle disinformation. One way is to encourage people to think about the strategies used by those who create and spread them. We can also equip the individuals with our insights on such disinformation. This is also the purpose of this article as it exposes the campaigns ran against Hinduism and India. The strategies used by propagandists can help people identify disinformation. We should fight together against the propaganda and disinformation. As a first step towards countering propaganda, please share this article to spread awareness.

Referendum in Kashmir: Choice of Pakistan and China

0

In 1947, when Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir signed the Instrument of Accession, he stated that after the war is over and Jammu and Kashmir is fully secured, referendum will be held to know the opinion of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Later the Kashmir issue reached to the United Nations in 1948, it stated the Resolution 47 for the condition of referendum. These conditions need to be fulfilled sequentially.

  1. 1. Pakistan needs to remove its forces from whole Jammu and Kashmir, which will be monitored by United Nations.
  2. 2. India needs to do the same as Pakistan, removing their forces from Jammu and Kashmir, though India is allowed to deploy some minimum amount of forces for it’s security in whole Jammu and Kashmir (including POK).
  3. 3. Referendum needs to be held in the whole Jammu and Kashmir.

Even if the first two points are fulfilled, the third point won’t be fulfilled, as China is already occupying Aksai Chin and Pakistan too gifted some part of Gilgit and Baltistan to China in the 1960s.

Moreover, the original inhabitants of Kashmir, Kashmiri Pundits were forced to move out of the valley and state in the 1990s due to terrorism. They need to settle back in Kashmir before casting their vote.

This clearly shows, the option to conduct referendum lies in the hands of Pakistan and China, not India, as propagated by Pakistani and Chinese Media.

What do the Bihar elections 2020 exit polls say?

0

The exit polls are out and it looks pretty clear that Bihar is going to see Tejaswi Yadav become its youngest-ever chief minister at the age of 31. Looking at the way the NDA media representatives reacted to the poll is a clear indication that they knew the results long back. Unlike the left ecosystem, the people who oppose the politics of the Congress or the RJD will not go out crying that the EVMs were hacked or ‘the death of democracy’ because of this result. Everyone will accept the verdict and will actually work towards getting ahead of it and winning the next election. And that is how a democracy should work.

Coming to this election, I will never agree to the politics of RJD and anyone who has seen the Bihar of 90s would say the same. But that doesn’t stop me from acknowledging the fact that Tejaswi Yadav ran a very smart campaign. If you look at his entire campaign, you will not find Lalu’s face in any of the posters. He didn’t fell into the trap of the NDA, which the Congress has been doing regularly, and pushed his own agenda. Good or bad, that’s for another debate. He raised the issue of distress in the economy and promised jobs to the unemployed youth. Again, whether he can deliver on them or not is another debate altogether. Adding to that, he fought this election with an ‘Anti-Nitish’ campaign and not an ‘Anti-Modi’ campaign. Keeping Rahul Gandhi and congress leadership away for most of the parts also helped him out.

Talking about the NDA, unlike the MGB which showed a clear unity, they were clearly divided. Right from the ticket distribution to LJP walking out to fight against Nitish Kumar, there was clear infighting. Nitish Kumar was carrying a burden of an anti-incumbency of 15 years with him. It almost felt like BJP wanted Nitish Kumar to lose and LJP was given a go-ahead by the BJP as a part of a larger plan. Anyway, 15 years of anti-incumbency was bound to hurt. Their biggest hope was that the opposition messes up and starts playing the match in their territory. Tejaswi smartly avoided that and that’s where he gets a big credit.

From the electoral arithmetic perspective, had the LJP not gone against the JDU, it would have made a huge difference in the number of seats for the NDA. Had the BJP fought with LJP and gone against the JDU, they might have performed better. But all these are ifs and buts and looks great on the hindsight. Does this mean that the Gathbandhan and the Congress are going to repeat this in the LokSabha? No. They are not. One thing that has become clear in the recent elections is that people vote differently for state elections and central elections. Delhi, Rajasthan and Odisha are the prime examples for this. But does that mean Modi cannot be defeated?

Again, no. If there was any chance for the opposition to defeat Modi, it is in 2024. BJP has literally delivered on all the promises (except a few) for which it was voted to power. Whether it is CAA or NRC or Ram Mandir or 370, the core issues of a BJP voter has been fulfilled. If the opposition plays smart, gets done with RG at the centre stage and raises the correct issue of the economy, they might have a chance to overthrow the government. But that requires unity among the opposition and smart tactics. If they keep playing on BJP’s field, they are never going to win. Having said that, the election is still 4 years away and that is an advantage for the current regime. It gives them time to work on the economy. I will reserve this debate for late 2023- early 2024. But yes, its time the government starts focussing on the economy before its too late.

Where does that leave Nitish Kumar?
Nitish Kumar will go down in Bihar’s history as the man who freed Bihar from the Jungle Raj of Lalu Prasad Yadav. Yes, the Nitish of today is not even a shadow of what he was 10 years back but even then the people who have seen the 90s Bihar will stand behind Nitish without giving a second thought. The problem is that the young voters who haven’t seen the Bihar of 90s, the benchmark of performance wasn’t Lalu but Nitish himself. And that’s what is bringing his downfall.

This is the beauty of Indian democracy and the Indian electoral process. Even a stalwart like Nitish Kumar can lose and a dynast and son of the infamous Lalu Yadav can become a Chief Minister. If you don’t find so, you need to get out of the SM/BuzzFeed/Quint-Print kind of publications based on perception politics and try to understand the electoral part of it. Both are very different from each other

Radical Islam and terrorism

No religion has mandated killing others as a requirement for its sustenance or promotion.- Dr. Abdul Kalam.

This may appear to be an oversimplification, but recent killings in France, Vienna, there are six major questions we need to ask ourselves. Are terror killings acceptable? No, whatever be the cause. The second is the right to freedom of expression. A definite and loud yes. The right to criticise? Another definite yes as it follows from the right to free speech. The freedom to offend? The answer to this iffy and complex question is: perhaps. The fifth is freedom to practise one’s religion, adhere to one’s faith or practise no religion. The answer is yes. The right to get hurt by criticism? Yes. But the right to kill for that? A resounding no.

It is evident from the responses to the latest killings in Paris and Vienna in the name of Islam and its Prophet that even the “moderate Muslim” still “doesn’t get it”. After every fresh act of gruesome murder or terror attack by Muslims, the “moderate Muslim” does cursorily condemn the killing but quickly rushes to absolve Islam of any blame.

He culls out certain verses from the Qur’an and some handpicked ahadis (plural of hadis, the tradition of Prophet Mohammed) to emphatically affirm that “Islam means peace”. The problem with this argument is that the extremist Muslim perpetrators of, and the masterminds behind, all the violence in the name of faith also quote from the same Qur’an and hadis compilations. The Islam-means-peace chant offers no solution because it fails to address the recurring question: If Islam means peace, why is there so much violence across the globe in its name?

Is Islam a religion of peace or violence? It is neither a religion of peace nor of violence, argues Reza Aslan, an Iranian-American scholar of religious studies and author of several books on Islam and Christianity. “Islam, like every other religion”, says Aslan, “is what its followers make of it.”

“Whatever else Islam, as any other religion, may be, it is also that which is interpreted, lived out, aspired towards, ignored and debated among ordinary individuals and communities,” writes Farid Esack, a theologian and Imam from South Africa.

The moderate Muslim could begin to be taken seriously were he to honestly address the reality of the many lived Islam instead of obsessing with the myth of “true” or “real” Islam. Because he refuses to do so, the world ends up seeing him for what he really is — an Islam apologist seeking refuge in whataboutery, searching for “root causes” everywhere except in his religion (lived and textual), “exposing” Western hypocrisy and double standards and asking what he believes to be the mother of all questions, “Is there to be no limit to freedom of expression, what if someone insults your father?”

Whataboutery: What about violence by Buddhists…? A simple answer: Yes, far too many Buddhists in Sri Lanka and Myanmar have hate in their hearts and blood on their hands, but they don’t kill in the name of the Buddha.

The root cause: Look for the root cause in geopolitics, colonialism, neo-colonialism etc., look anywhere except religion. This is a line that moderate Muslims have borrowed from many left intellectuals about whom Ghassan Hage, a Lebanese academic based in Australia, has this to say on Facebook: “If your first reaction to the vile Islamo-fascist terrorist attacks in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine and Nice is to go through the violent and racist history of French colonialism and postcolonialism, etc, you are ethically bankrupt.”

Limits to freedom of expression line: Here the moderate Muslim is in his element, “exposing” the link between the contentious cartoons of Prophet Mohammed today and the historical hostility of the Christian West towards Islam and its Prophet. The cartoons, we are told, are part of a “sustained, insidious propaganda” to incite hatred for the Prophet and fuel Islamophobia in the guise of free speech. Also “exposed” is the hypocrisy and double standards of the West in the selective exercise of free speech only vis-a-vis Muslims. To this one is tempted to respond: Look, who is talking.

Perhaps, it will be news to the moderate Muslim that France, like much of Europe, has laws against “hate crimes” such as racism and xenophobia — which includes anti-religious hate crime. Surprise, surprise, France even has hate speech laws. Those laws protect individuals and groups from being defamed or insulted because they belong or do not belong, in fact or in fancy, to an ethnicity, a nation, a race, a religion, a sex, a sexual orientation, or a gender identity or because they have a handicap. The laws forbid any communication which is intended to incite discrimination against, hatred of, or harm to anyone because of his belonging or not belonging, in fact or in fancy, to an ethnicity, a nation, a race, a religion, a sex, a sexual orientation, or a gender identity, or because he or she has a handicap.

So, yes, even France sets limits to freedom of expression. But there, the basic principle is this: Ideas do not have rights, people do. As the French see it, you, your father and your mother are protected against hate speech because you fall under the definition of people. God, gods, goddesses, prophets fall under the definition of ideas, and ideas are not to be protected from “defamation”. This is so because, universally, the freedom of expression is believed to be meaningless without the “right to offend”. For the French, the right to offend includes not only the right to express doubt, question, criticise, ridicule, mock and provoke but also the right to insult and outrage. Did not Prophet Mohammed greatly offend people of his own clan/tribe by saying things which they considered to be highly blasphemous?

Not just you, moderate Muslim, many in the West also consider the Prophet cartoons as highly offensive, and in bad taste. But there are ways of saying and your total silence on the response of certain heads of Muslim-majority states points towards the sickness in lived Islam of which you seem to be a part. The problem is this. Not one of these “statesmen” has dared point out that the butchery in Paris and in Vienna is rooted in the widespread Muslim belief that Islam calls for the death penalty for blasphemy and apostasy. Remember, Salman Taseer, the governor of Punjab in Pakistan, who was assassinated by one of his bodyguards, Malik Mumtaz Qadri, in January 2011 for daring to suggest a review of his country’s infamous blasphemy law.

Like those heads of state, you too, moderate Muslim, dare not get to the root of the Muslim sickness, or publicly demand the end of blasphemy and apostasy laws anywhere and everywhere. Why then blame others, if to them you sound like nothing more than an Islam apologist?

Apparently anyone who wants to win the war against violent extremism and save the soul of Islam, not to mention transform a stagnant Middle East, should be in favour of this process. After all, Christianity had the Reformation, so goes the argument, which was followed by the Enlightenment; by secularism, liberalism and modern European democracy. So why can’t Islam do the same?

Reforms are of course needed across the crisis-ridden Muslim-majority world: political, socio-economic and, yes, religious too. Muslims need to rediscover their own heritage of pluralism, tolerance and mutual respect – embodied in, say, the Prophet’s letter to the monks of St Catherine’s monastery, or the “convivencia” (or co-existence) of medieval Muslim Spain.
