How Modi’s BJP became the dominant force in left-liberal Bengal

0

In the midst of deadly pandemic, the five state election results in India and in specific the Bengal result was stunning and interesting in every perspective. As we decode the results, the more intriguing aspects of the Bengal poll result emerged. The fiery battle between ruling Trinamool Congress Party and BJP took vicious turns and violent incidents but TMC’s decisive victory in Bengal was indeed astonishing to many political pundits considering the majority it got.

However, not everything is gloomy for BJP considering its stellar performance in the Triangular contested fight with Communists and its ally Congress party apart from ruling Trinamool Congress Party. From 3 seats in 2016 Assembly polls, to 78 Seats in 2021, BJP made a big presence in Bengal decimating Communists and Congress party who once ruled the state for 60 years since India’s Independence in 1947.

As we decode the Bengal result, BJP’s dominance is clear and visible to every household in Bengal. The party that had a nominal presence and doesn’t have any political infrastructure until 2016 have made a debut in 2012 securing one seat and then rose to 3 seats in 2016. However, the ruling Trinamool Congress never considered BJP as an opponent nor a force that could impact its political clout. However in 2019, Parliament elections, BJP have shown its stunning performance securing 18 Parliament seats with a vote share of over 40% in Bengal. BJP’s gradual growth from 2014 and in specific Prime Minister Modi charisma and capabilities leveraged the vote share in 2019. From an 8% vote share in 2016 to 40% vote share in 2019 have caused shivers in Trinamool Congress. The spike of BJP’s vote share in 2019, alerted the ruling party’s core organization to take some immediate steps to overcome the impending 2021 assembly elections.

However, despite securing the decisive mandate by Trinamool Congress in 2021, it could not stop the juggernaut of BJP’s dominance. In fact, BJP took the vote share of Communists and Congress Party and decimated both parties leaving them to score a big Fat Zero. If the decisive victory for Trinamool Congress brings the joy and fervor then BJP too can have the same fervor considering its dominance in Bengal securing the Principle Opposition Party Status. From no where to a dominant Opposition Party, BJP will surely make its presence in Bengal Legislature.

One can imagine how BJP with 3 seats in legislature highlighting the Muslim appeasement to State Government’s failure in every aspects brought immense presence in every house hold in Bengal is what BJP’s strategy and so, the result is quite evident. If we look at the vote share secured by BJP in 2021, there is hardly BJP have lost since 2019. It indeed have maintained the vote share which it got from Trinamool Congress and Communists. With almost 38% vote share BJP’s swing rate was over 28% compared to 2016 while the swing rate for Trinamool is 3% from 43 to 47% .

One interesting aspect of this Bengal election is that despite Trinamool Congress won a whopping 213 seats, the Party chief and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost to her former subordinate Suvindu Sarkar at Nandigram. The impact of Bengal elections will have national ramification and unification of Liberal forces across India. Her political ambition on national platform can be seen in coming months and its quite evident that her rapport with Prime Minister Modi is not good and so one can expect a turbulent future. However, there is a lot that can be done from BJP to blunt her ambition for 2024. The important thing is, BJP is now a formidable force in Bengal but the prime focus at this time for BJP and Prime Minister Modi for next 24 months will be on COVID-19 to inoculate millions of Indians and regain the trust from people is the top priority to continue Ashwamedha Yagna next year for Uttar Pradesh and Goa elections.

One step forward in “Congress Mukt Bharat”

As soon as the counting of 4 states and 1 Union territory assembly election begins it became clear that the voters of these places have also contributed in “Congress Mukt Abhiyan” mission. Whether it is Bengal, Assam, or Pondicherry, Congress is not also able to gain power in Kerala. Only in Tamil Nadu congress is in power only because it is in power with DMK. DMK alone has the majority, congress has not played any significant role here.

Kerala which is considered as a “Pendulum State” which changes it’s state government after every 5 years, voters has changed this decades old political myth and helped LEFT to regain its “only left state”. Kerala was the place where Rahul Gandhi has invested his all his energy doing rallies on loop, Congress has also used almost all of his machinery and power to regain Kerala but was failed by a huge margin.

INC had a golden opportunity to be the ruling party in Assam, but because of lack of leading capacity of both Central and state leaders of INC, congress was not able to grab it. INC tries their level best and toss the topic of CAA fully but cannot make the voters of Assam to be with them. It was because last ruling years of INC was like hell for Assamese, people are not able to forget those years till today. Also, the alliance partner of congress, AIUDF has a very disturbing image in the eyes of common people f Assam, which proves as a disaster for Congress.

Congress was not even close in the fight in West Bengal and Pondicherry. There seems to be a neck to neck fight between TMC and BJP in Bengal but TMC sweeps up Bengal with a unexpectedly huge margin. And BJP wins Pondicherry quite easily, it was not even a close fight between INC and BJP.

DMK led alliance in which congress was also a partner wins up in Tamil Nadu. But the matter of concern for INC is that, DMK alone has the number of majority so INC will not get proper place in this state government and not even have a strong say in state decisions.

Only reason for the collapse of INC going on in whole of the country is that party only believes in the person with surname Gandhi, there is no place of talent, many leader have left INC and made their own way because of this issue. The consistency of loosing state of Rahul Gandhi is unmatchable. The main problem which congress will face in the coming years is its existence as a national party. If INC wants to rise again, it has to come out of Nepotism as soon as possible otherwise INC will soon become only a state party.

Another malicious attempt at maligning our defense forces in the guise of fiction and creative freedom

Amit Sial as Samarth Kaushik
  • Release Date: 23/04/2021
  • Platform: Sony Liv
  • Cast: Amit Sial, Aksha Pardasany, Anshumaan Pushkar, Gopal Datt
  • Director: Sachin Pathak
  • Writer: Siddharth Mishra

There are some filmmakers whose hearts are filled with so much malice that they desperately try their best to blur the thin line between hateful propaganda and creative liberties. They create their films and series in such a way that it becomes hard to tell if they were inspired to tell a story or just wanted to malign the defense forces of the country and used the film as a pretext and medium. One such deplorable effort is Kathmandu Connection by director Sachin Pathak and writer Siddharth Mehta. I have to give it to them that they camouflaged their product very well. Any raised fingers about the series and its story can be justified by the pretense of creative liberties and telling a specific story. The makers would most definitely add that their series in no way generalizes its character s and finds identification with the defense forces of the country. But when you watch this series it serves you the same venom that has been peddled by Bollywood for years in a subtler and more potent way. This has a higher risk of penetrating your soul and making you despise the men and women who fight and die for you.

The protagonist of the story is DCP Samarth Kaushik (Amit Sial), a despicable, self-centered, conniving, and murderous police officer who starts by killing atleast one innocent Muslim and then goes on to brandish him as a terrorist of the dreaded Hizbul Mujaheddin. He then uses this killing as a ladder to quickly climb to the top of the departmental hierarchy. He is an equally deplorable character on the family front and is being divorced by his wife. She cannot stand their daughter being in his company and the makers take special care to ensure that her hatred finds its way to us and we are made aware of the fact that he must have done something terrible to deserve so much hate from his wife.

He doesn’t lose a single opportunity to take undue advantage of others. The ones at the receiving end of his selfishness are generally his colleagues. When all other options to arrest and bring back a dreaded terrorist fails, he manipulates and uses a TV Anchor, Shivani (Aksha Pardasany) who is head-over-heels in love with him to function as a bait to bring the terrorist down. He does so with clinical ease and it is this action that makes him an even more deplorable character. Finally, when he falls prey to his own vanity and his tarnished past catches up with him, he shows no signs of remorse or repentance. On the contrary, he is sure that he will make it out of the soup and will then bring down the wrath of the system on the ones who had wronged him. To cut a long story short, the series draws the worst possible picture of a police officer and tries to justify the bad guys who are shown to be forced into doing certain things because of circumstances.

Aksha Pardasany as Shivani

In stark contrast to the character of Samarth Kaushik, the antagonist Sunny (Anshumaan Pushkar) is painted with unbelievable softness and the moral upper hand. He is in love with the Shivani and was forced into a life of crime when he accidentally killed a fellow student who was bad-mouthing Shivani and then pulled a knife on him. He is soft-spoken and prides himself on being an Indian. He can do no wrong to the country and willfully surrenders to grant the wish of the woman that he loves. Samarth feels even more morally bankrupt and hateable in presence of this criminal with a heart of gold.

The character of Shivani was in love with the innocent and pristine Muslim fellow whom Samarth gunned down. She was brought up at the same orphanage that the guy’s mother ran and was slated to marry him before he was shot and brandished as a terrorist by Samarth. She joined the media and walked into Samarth’s attention with the sole purpose of bringing him down. We are shown how she gradually inches closer to her target and how the arrival of Sunny in the picture only makes the matter easier for her. All of this is stemmed from the first encounter that we see Samarth execute. The series documents the effects of it on the lives of the innocent who were left behind after the death of the boy. All this is done with the malicious intent of inciting hatred for a man who is seen to be the torchbearer of the police force.

The encounter that sets this entire game into motion is designed on the Batla House encounters and is yet another dastardly attempt to prove that the terrorists gunned down in that encounter were in fact innocent. Of course, this is only a fictional account of the incident, and all the names and elements are changed but it is executed in a way that brings back memories of the actual incident. The way, in which it is executed, the film tries to slowly poison us with its rendition of the events by infusing in us a hatred for the law machinery by making Samarth such a hateable character and depicting him as the face of law and his action garnering his promotions.

Gopal Datt in a still

What makes Kathmandu Connection even more dangerous is how well it is acted and how close the portrayal of the character is to how the actual police force is seen moving around. This makes the people draw a line between this and the real deal and makes the impact of what is shown here even more profound. I always keep my review of films and series objective but in this case, I couldn’t let this blatant effort at making demons out of the defense personnel pass through without even a question being raised at the intention of the men and women who made this series.

One must never forget that the only line of defense that we have against a diverse assemblage of enemies of the country are our defense forces. By painting a horrifying picture of them drawing by inspiration from real incidents that happened quite the other way around, we are only making the work of our enemies easier. These filmmakers are not only chopping away at the roots of the foundation of this country but are also poisoning the hearts and minds of the innocent people of this country with their malice. They should be held accountable for the hate that they are mongering and should be asked questions about what is making them do all this. Creative freedom should not always be against the sovereignty. It can also highlight the achievements and supreme sacrifices of the men and women of the armed forces. Unfortunately, that is not what Kathmandu Connection is all about.

Let’s talk communal politics

Taking a hit at government and politics is an alluring job, one just cannot resist expressing opinions of all latitudes. It is perfectly normal, and forms the very plinth of democracy. But one must have a valid reason.

On any given day, a discerning eye can find an ignorant herd of misled or apolitical people galore, raising their biased voice in the name of wrongs. If you get a chance to counter their arguments, you’ll uncover how terribly they perceive the logical facilities. “I speak against prejudice”- is what they behold. But rip their skin apart and these sheep in wolves’ guise merely exude an air of insecurity and naïve attitude. How do I know they’re apolitical? Their ignorance.

Save your “andh bhakt” criticism, it’s absolutely irrelevant here. We’re talking logic, not favours.

The other day, a person at the gym cried, “So what’s the biggest scam in the country today?”
My friend, somewhat recharged, screamed- “BJP”!
Just like that he expressed an opinion. But the base of it was ridiculously shocking.

The Hindu-Muslim politics of the government, according to him, was what prompted this comment. But my only concern was, which government’s politics, to be exact?

The Central Government has long been accused of communal politics. Elections in West Bengal witnessed massive boulders of dissatisfaction rolling down regards this stratagem. Any interview of the locals would highlight this issue, particularly when those people are among the ones supported by the so-far ruling party in the state.

Let’s say the right wing is embracing it’s beloved one section of the society more than the other. Cool. By that assumption, the Hindus have their privileged asses covered under the “favourites” policy of the government. But what good did any of this favouritism do to the people? Did this section get differential voting rights? Or do you think the Hindus get each a lucrative tax exemption, stipends for being Hindu, and an entourage to dig up stacks of riches for them? No, they don’t. No materialistic benefit has ever been derived from this deceit.

Mind you, I’m talking materialistic advantages only. Coming to the Citizenship Amendment Act, needless to say, the whole nation has deciphered this move of the government in the light of a communal approach.

And now comes the people’s face of equality, the one my friend from gym swears by, the Didi party – with the Chief Minister holding a master’s degree in “Islamic history”. How neutral the education, how unbiased the application!

No wonder where the “Muslim Appeasement” allegations had their roots running.

Unlike the BJP, this party quite literally had an “Imam Bhatta” policy which was designed specifically to provide stipends to thousands of Imams and Muezzins in the state. An election gimmick or otherwise, the choice of people group reflected the prejudice. This was eventually ruled as unconstitutional by the Calcutta High Court. In another controversy, durga idol immersion was “banned” almost a day prior to Muharram, in a bid to appease minorities. So much for the muslim vote bank!

So the next time you say “Hindu-Muslim politics of the government”, with all due respect, please bother to clarify which government you’re talking about. They’re all the same, aren’t they?

Cry, my mother, cry

Life is nothing but a relentless march towards death. That is the only certainty of life. Yet, life demands that we do not remind ourselves of our mortality. Life demands that we do not dwell on the transient nature of the existence of our loved ones. Life demands that we relegate death to the back of our consciousness. And at times of serious crisis, when it really is a matter of life and death, we try to keep afloat by not letting ourselves be reminded of it again and again, in all of death’s frightening details.

Though death is certain, it is never pretty. Though we must accompany our loved ones till the end of their mortal journey, till their mortal remains are consecrated to nature’s forces – we do that at a cost. We do it knowing that the heartbreaking images of those last minutes would come back to haunt us again and again, even when we try to console ourselves with the remembrance of moments that were spent in love and laughter. For that reason too, the moments of the final passage are personal, private. We must witness something that none of us ever want to.

Not surprising that we may even feel squeamish about it. When I learnt about my beloved uncle’s illness, after returning from the University, I was devastated. Elders in the family were whispering about how doctors had given him only a few months. As a callow youth, I was hesitant to visit him in the hospital. I could not imagine my beloved kaka, a giant of a man, who would pick up my book-filled heavy suitcase in one hand and me in the other when I returned from my boarding school – bedridden! I could not think of such to be my final memories of him. My father gently reminded me that it was my turn to be the strong one, to bring a few moment’s of happiness in my kaka’s time of pain. Till today, I have never stopped being ashamed of my squeamishness, and I have never stopped being eternally grateful to my father for showing me the way. [Though miraculously, my kaka recovered and we were spared a terrible heartbreak.]

Many years later, when my father passed, I knew it was time for me to confront those heartbreaking moments, moments that would be etched in stone. My cousin brothers offered to take my place. But I had to accompany my father – the man who had given me life, who had always stood like a rock for me – in his final journey. My father worked in the state Irrigation & Waterworks department, loved his work and always referred to himself as the ‘water engineer’. It was my duty to consecrate his ashes to one of his beloved rivers. I would give everything to erase those moments from my memory.

That is why I, or people like me, could never have imagined that there existed a section of people, who would make it their business to intrude upon such moments; people who deal in the macabre, who revel in the misery of others.

In an earlier era, families used to have framed imprints of a dear departed one’s feet. Not many families could afford a camera then, and rare occasions on which a person would have his/her photograph taken. When a loved one passed, his/her feet were smeared with alta (a red dye, typically women would paint their feet with it) and an imprint used to be taken on a piece of paper. Even though I understood the reasons, I never felt comfortable with the practice. It smelt too much of death. The reminder was of the passing, not of the living memory of departed. [Of course, with the proliferation of cameras (and now smart-phones)this particular practice has all but disappeared.] I had no idea there exist people who are immune to the ugliness of death.

No. I can’t bring myself to look at those funeral pictures that are flooding the social media. We all know the situation is grim. Every day someone at touching distance is contracting the disease and some (perhaps many) are losing the battle. How can anyone use such devastating images to score political points or to make money out them? The people selling the news are doing this because the numbers are not in their favour. After all is said and done, the percentage fraction (of people infected/died) is still far below many (so called) developed nations. But funeral visuals can very effectively make a point.

And then there are those. They do not even pretend to sell opinion or news. They walk from funeral pyre to funeral pyre, taking photographs. And they sell these photographs for Rs.20K (and upwards) apiece. Oh yes, these are not for domestic consumption but for the people for whom the misery of a former colony (who’s lately been trying to stand on its two feet) makes for great vicarious pleasure. Have we not seen these people before? The history of our freedom struggle is choc-a-block with stories of one brother betraying another for a few pennies thrown by the foreign master.

No, we should not call them vultures. Vultures are honorable animals, the sanitation workers of nature. These people are pathological criminals. Feeding off the misery of others. Selling their souls, defaming their own country and countrymen for pretty pennies. They are maggots in the gangrenous society of others.

And who are these people who put all the blame on the central government for the current situation? Have we not seen ‘corporate doctors’, consulting stinking rich clients online, ‘relaxing’ in private resorts in the middle of the first wave lock-down? Have we not watched ‘bindaas’ souls partying away the night to make things ‘bearable’, when they would not pay the school fees of their children (making the lives of teachers and other school employees difficult)? Do we not know of covid-infected families who hid their condition from everyone and even insisted on a ‘no-mask’ policy for their household helps? These are the people who are out with their sanctimonious rage. These are the people who find the most insulting, most derogatory words to describe our scientists, our administrators, our public servants who are working day and night to keep us safe, to make things work. Do you see a single one of these ‘outrager’s doing anything useful in this terrible pandemic? Are they serving the nation? Are they helping people? Have no doubt about it – these people are trying to pass their own guilt onto the administration and, in the process, trying to reap political mileage out of it.

Cry, our motherland – the land of our ancestors, the land of our ancient civilisation – cry. Cry, in the hope that your tears may cleanse the souls of your children. Cry, my Mother, cry.

India Shall RISE

This so-called ‘international’ opinion piece by an outsider Indian is just another sample of how we Indians may be held solely responsible for a downfall of the Rising Bharat in the world.

The conspiracy of the western world to arrest the growth of India is clear in many fronts, and this is one easy way to adopt. Hire a few selfish Indians whose own contributions to Indian growth may be negligible and who are open to the bait of easy money by ranting against their own country that they have ditched long back.

If you read through such pieces, you will find there would be more creativity than facts, more anger against the Indian government and less justification or acknowledgement even for the good work that has been done so far.

Especially when someone like Modi has taken the Indian Lutyens media by the horn and decimated them to their near death, their alliance in the international forum are joining them for taking revenge on Modi. A catastrophe like #Covid that has befallen the world has taken more lives, almost 4 times in US, despite having one of the best health care facilities as they claim.

And even today, when pictures from the Indian cremation grounds, strangely only Hindu rituals, have got space in the front pages of the international newspapers, the #worldmeter data shows the death in India hasn’t surpassed beyond the American numbers, not even one-third of it. You must not forget that these all, despite India having a very diverse population base and poor infrastructure in health facilities especially due to the 70-years long incapability of prior governments that only siphoned off funds for their own parties and families.

Since Modi came to power, almost all indices of development have done better, be it road connectivity, railways, digitalization, direct benefit transfer to common men, and most importantly, doing away with all scams that used to be so common in earlier governments. The media that earlier was a part of the governments in those selfish run have been kept out of the reach of the Modi government. The national awards that used to be bought or being given to incapable people just to appease them for shielding the government from all wrong things have now got to the real deserving people under Modi’s regime.

If you see the recent vaccine diplomacy, you may easily see how India has been quite careful in helping the world in this crisis by exporting effective vaccines to the world. This self-reliant India is something that some developed countries are unable to accept. How India can grow in stature is something that destabilizes the international watchers who scare if India one day rises above them all.

As for the allegations that elections and Kumbha Mela have contributed towards this COVID crisis, it may be partially true. The numbers from the states that hold these events do not establish the allegations yet, the coming days may tell us the truth.

One major issue is that despite health being a state matter and many states being so callous in their approach to tackle this menace, the Center under Modi’s guidance has been trying all means to arrest the death rates. Be it immediate increase in Oxygen production or vaccine production, an active government is working day in and day out to ensure things improve as soon as possible.

But as history is witness to many instances earlier, some coward, selfish and brute individuals can go to any extent to malign their own motherland, these international opinion pieces just serve the same purpose. At a time when they should come forward and join hands to help India deal better with this crisis, they prefer to write pieces to tarnish the good image of India. Let’s remember out worst enemies are those who do not fight with us face to face, rather sit, see and celebrate when our valiant soldiers get hurt in the battlefield.

Despite all these, everything around me now in this holy land of Bharat infuse in me a strong hope that THIS TOO SHALL PASS and India shall rise, rise above the rest! Jai Hind!

The travails of oped writers: How they react with recent election results

0

Yesterday evening must have been a busy night for your oped writers. Not all oped writers, but some oped writers who are fighting the good fight of rebellion from Modi so that they can hand over the throne to Sonia Gandhi at the soonest.

Here is a sneak peak at their notes

Keywords if BJP won:
Fascism under the garb of elections
BJP steamrolls TMC – EVMs hacked say opposition
West Bengal is now a covid hotspot
Democracy in Danger

Keyword if TMC wins:
Bengal rejects polarisation, votes unitedly
West Bengal shows it is unique
Mamatas policies have enabled her to win over Women

If BJP won Puducherry:
Puducherry is insignificant in any electoral calculus. BJP is confined to Karnataka and still has not made a dent in South India

If BJP did not in Puducherry:
Puducherry continues to be a torch bearer South Indias independence.

Kerala was never going to be in the BJP calculus, so the Kerala model notes were secure. Though, Educated Kerala rejects BJP yet again – was there in the drafts as a resounding kick. Assam was also a bit of a battle given up by the chatterati and anyway it is too far to matter (for them)

Thankfully for them it was a sweep with the results along expected lines, so how the South Kolkata analysis will sweep the headlines for Bengal and be automatically cleansed of all wrong doing. Kerala will be back with its Kerala model (no wave there). Pudhucherry and Assam are forgotten due to size and distance respectively. Tamil Nadu is safe from the BJP on expected lines, so for now, we settle with “India rejects Modi and Shah style electoral majoritarianism – voters show they prefer India as a Federal structure”

And go back to dreaming about their future sinecures…
