Complicit silence in the 1990s: How ‘The Kashmir Files’ exposed the sold-out media

0

When there was a small incident on a train in post-2014 India and in a scuffle between two individuals a Muslim boy got seriously injured, then when in a village due to misunderstanding that a missing cow-calf was stolen from the neighbourhood by a Muslim the villagers ended up killing the Muslim in a fight and very recently when in a village called Hatras a Dalit girl was allegedly raped and done to death – We witnessed the country‘s  Mainstream Print media as well as TV channels and the self-acclaimed liberals in social media and news columns making so much of ruckus over the atrocities meted out to minority and Dalit community. They were fervently vying for the attention of the outside world and the govt.

In the Dadri episode, the Mafia of celebrity intellectuals in order to get the attention of the world and the central govt (even though the state govt of  UP was under different party rule ) renounced their prestigious National awards to indict the Modi govt. In the case of Hathras, the entire who is who of TV channels made it to Hatras to report the plight of a hapless Dalit girl. Some discarded journalists from Mainstream media running their own rag-tag YouTube channels set up their news coverage centre in the nearby sugar cane fields, to draw the attention of the world. The media had gathered in Hatras in all readiness as if they had prescient knowledge about the event to unfold.

In the backdrop of the above event juxtaposed with the events of the Kashmir which everyone is shocked to learn from the Kashmir files movie – one wonders, what was the role of the media then? Who controlled the media? The very fact that the majority of the population who were adults then during the 1980-90 period but still were unaware of the gory human massacre till recently, points to this conclusion that more than the politicians and the political parties, the Media failed the Kashmiri Hindus. Was it the case of Indian prime Media having been bought over by Pak ISI which was printing Indian currency in Pakistan or was it the threat to life from the militants, perceived by the so-called brave journalists that they failed to bring out the truth about Kashmir genocide? In fact, on the contrary, they tried to establish an alternate narrative that Kashmir was boiling with the freedom movement of the locals. Freedom from Indian oppression and freedom to seek their own identity.

One wonders in what way, regular calls from Muslim mosques over loudspeakers to incite local Muslims to drive away Hindus or convert them to Islam or kill them on their refusal to convert can pass off as the Kashmir population’s will to seek independence. A religious radicalization was mischievously being labelled as Kashmir’s independence movement. The ultra anti-India authors from anti-Hindu syndicates write, “The case for Kashmir’s freedom“ book to push the agenda of their paymasters. This gang of fake narrative peddlers have convinced the outside world that the Indian security forces, which sacrificed so much to fight the insurgency in Kashmir, mercilessly engaged in rape and killing of Kashmiris and that the atrocities of Indian security forces have further consolidated the resolve of innocent rifle-wielding and grenade throwing Kashmiri youth to separate from India.

Today if you refer to Wikipedia on Kashmir militancy, you will find the mention of atrocities of Indian security forces. This traitorous and treacherous gang of crooks calling themselves Liberals presented an unreal picture of Kashmir to the outside world and the rest of India.  How can these crooks of media masquerading as Liberals and champions of human rights could be at peace with their conscience and snatch a good night’s sleep?  Many of us who have seen the movie are unable to get sleep and are guilt-ridden that we could do nothing to our hapless brothers who suffered so much at the hands of jihadists.

Now, these obnoxious media personalities are up in arms against Vivek Agnihotri and his team, because their bluff has been called off. Their fake narratives have begun to peel off. One good thing done by Vivek Agnihotri was that pending opening up of theatres in India they decided to take the screening to foreign soil. The crooked agenda drivers of the sold media were caught unaware. The western Nation’s politicians and diplomats who had been brainwashed with the fake narrative on Kashmir are realizing the entire folly behind the so-called Kashmir freedom movement trying to camouflage the religious radicalization.

Entire India remains in gratitude to this brave filmmaker, who has posed so many questions to this Media mafia and exposed their unscrupulous agenda. Even now these Media mercenaries are fighting tooth and nail to challenge the film and its authenticity with countercharges that it is propaganda material in the direction of wresting advantage for 2024 polls. Try as they may the Hindu consolidation juggernaut has started moving and it would become unstoppable. Even If they buy out movie theatres Nationalist OTT platforms like Zee5 and scores of other channels, however, would ensure that every Indian sees it and every westerner would set aside his prejudiced and preconceived ideas about the Indian government’s initiatives in Kashmir.

Fortunately, post-2014 few media channels with Nationalistic values have sprung up and are challenging and exposing the dubious narratives of this unscrupulous anti-Hindu media coterie, but for which the spine chilling and gruesome facets of atrocities perpetrated by the Islamic bigots could have been hushed up by them permanently.

Why the new anti-BJP front might meet the same fate as the old one

0

KCR starting the third front has made the news, meeting all the prominent political leaders from different states in recent days. But how triumphant is it? Does it make them a winning alliance or just strange bedfellows? Here is an opinion from D.Narsimha, a political analyst from Telangana.

“KCR aims at becoming the tallest opposition leader and the sure-shot way of being noticed as a feasible contender ahead of the next general election and easy way is by targeting PM Modi himself. KCR will contest elections from Telangana in 2023. When In 2018, he managed to increase his party score to 88 (out of 117), the Congress, was the main Opposition in Telangana, but the current situation shows the rise of the BJP which is aggressively trying to grow. And to keep the BJP in check, he sees no other option but to attack the BJP party and Prime Minister Modi. However, these might not be a very well-to-do attempt on his side.”

WHAT CAN GO WRONG WITH THE ALLIANCE:

“This is not the first time the opposition had tried to conjoin forces to take down the BJP party. Earlier in 2019 too, these leaders had come together (to take on the BJP) ahead of the Lok Sabha Polls. However, it was an utter failure. Such experiments had been done in the past in several states but there was no effect.

To defeat Modi, an idea or joint show of hands isn’t enough, A face is needed. Who can be the presumptive nominee that can stand as a front runner in the alliance, will be a million-dollar question. Each person thinks that they are the only worthy person to be in the spotlight running for the PM seat. who do you think will be selected? Didi? KCR? Thackrey? Who knows?.

Congress party in Telangana already started slamming KCR after his meet with NCP, saying he cannot be trusted. Mamata Banerjee says she doesn’t want congress in the alliance, among all the flip-flopping of different parties, It is very unlikely that an alliance like this is gonna win. But, for a second, let’s assume it wins. The question of who is gonna be the PM will create a conflict that leads to its dismantling before it even starts. This idea of an alliance is just out of the fear of losing in their turf, an attempt to divert the negativity of the people on their party. In this process, KCR has gone a little too far asking for proof of surgical strikes and saying that INC ex-Youth leader Rahul Gandhi did nothing wrong by asking for the proof.

Some say this is KCR’s vision for a new India, some say this is his plan to save his party in his state, whatever it may be, there are early signs that it might make him lose votes in the state. Whether BJP wins or not, the next elections in Telangana are going to be exciting,” Says the analyst.

Islam, secular democracy and India

As per Islam, sovereignty of the whole universe rests with Allah alone. Allah is the absolute ruler of the whole universe and he rules even arbitrarily (Quran 32:13) without any concern or compassion for human beings. However in this world and for practical purpose, sovereignty of Caliphate or country rests with Prophet or Caliph or Muslim King or Muslim leader, as the case may be. This basic theology does not change with circumstances.

A minority community of Muslims can live in a non-Muslim majority country. Muslims there may follow the rules and laws made by the non-Muslims government there. But they can’t accept the rules and laws of Kafir from the bottom of their heart. They remain in a disturbed state of mind. For them the rules and laws of Allah are enshrined in Sharia only and all man-made rules and laws need to be rejected.

For a Muslim, Quran is the only Constitution. Quran is prescriptive to him. When Quran mandates Muslims to engage in warfare with non-Muslims, till all non-Muslims are converted, killed or made Dhimmi; – expecting secularism, pluralism and tolerance from the Muslims is next to stupidity.

So, the Constitution-based modern secular democracy has been anti-thesis of Islam. When a Muslim in India cries for Secularism, Democracy or Constitutional values, he either does not follow some core Islamic teachings or he tells gross lie to deceive non-Muslims. Arif Mohammad Khan to Asaduddin Owaisi via Nasiruddin Shah and Rana Ayyub et al, the fact remains the same. Only evil Leftists and agenda-driven Liberandus of India refuse to see this.

When a non-Muslim comes out openly about the incompatibility of Islam with the modern secular democracy, Islamists take the oft-repeated, standard and monotonous path of calling the said non-Muslim a ‘hate monger’ and ‘Islamophobe’. Even UN may also come forward to call him an ‘Islamophobe’. But they don’t have any counter-argument, what so ever.

Turkey, a 99 percent Muslim majority country, started practicing secular democracy about a hundred years back under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who threw Islam completely out of the arena of state governance and social dynamics. But during past two decades, Turkey gradually has gone back to Islamic orthodoxy.

Islam has no scope for reformation and there is no escape for Muslims from Islam, except leaving it. ISIS, Boko Haram and Taliban practice unadulterated Islam. The movie “The Kashmir Files” has exposed the true face of Islam. Hence is so much of commotion and hue and cry about the movie by the Islamist-Left-Liberal cabal of India. With about 250 million of Muslims, their Quran, their Sharia and Sunnah of Muhammad; – secular and democratic India is really in a tight corner situation now.

How did US & NATO force Russia to war with Ukraine? Here are a few reasons

0

The aftermath of World War II allowed the US to become a global superpower from an intermediary global power. This led to the beginning of an ‘American era’ with its rapid industrialization and capitalism leading to significant economic benefits for America. With the U.S. dollar becoming the world’s official reserve currency in 1944, America enjoys lower exchange rate risks, reduced transactions costs, etc.

Nevertheless, it was not the only US that rose to power after World War II; the Soviet Union also experienced a similar rise to power, arguably less than America. Now, this rise was seen as a threat to America’s political ambitions to stay as a global superpower which further led to the cold war between the two, thereby, causing the disintegration of the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) in 1991. Since then, the US has been trying to keep Russia at its bay and seeking to thwart all attempts by Russia to become more powerful.

In 1949, the United States, Canada, and their western European allies formed North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to counter the Soviet Union in the name of collective security measures. The same organization has many times been used to confront Russia and challenge its sovereignty from time to time. America has not only used its military superiority, global superpower status, and alliance with western European countries to counter Russia but also to change the status quo in several nation-states and countries/regions as per its own definition of right and wrong.

The United States and NATO have installed thousands of troops in several countries (mostly baltic) across eastern Europe and many of them are bordering Russia. Some of them include Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, etc. One big nation that borders Russia is Ukraine and the west is trying to append Ukraine to NATO so that it can install its troops in Ukraine too. This induction of troops will not only help the US and the west empower Russia in world politics but also will always threaten the integrity and sovereignty of Russia altogether. Consider it like, your foe from a different part of the city starts living in your neighborhood. Unacceptable.

Furthermore, post-annexation of Crimea in 2014 by Russia, the United States has devoted more than $5.6B in total assistance to Ukraine comprising both security and non-security assistance. This commitment of American funds has further bolstered Ukraine’s desire to be a part of NATO and join the west and obviously no matter what intimidated the Russian Federation very frequently.

The United States has been using its global superpower status to sanction various countries as per its own volition in order to maintain its status quo in world politics. It uses several types of sanctions including but not limited to Diplomatic sanctions, Economic sanctions, Military sanctions, Sports sanctions, sanctions on individuals, etc. to gain political benefits and perpetuate its military superiority. Evidently, sundry of these sanctions have been used upon the Kremlin every now and then.

In addition, several claims and reports depicting the pentagon’s sponsorship and collaboration with the Ukrainian government for the creation of biological laboratories for the purpose of development of biological weapons is a matter of grave concern, and this further menaces the Moscow. The concealed aggression by the United States over the several decades has fueled the Kremlin to take such big actions foiling world peace.

UP Polls 2022- Results have sent tremors among naysayers

Yes, you have read the article’s ‘title’ right. At the end of a gruelling campaign by the naysayers prophesying about an imminent anti-Yogi verdict, the results of Uttar Pradesh elections were out on 10th March. They are visibly shocked and common men are celebrating!

Who are these ‘naysayers’? They constitute a strange spectrum starting from opposition parties, to media and sadly some forces within BJP who wanted the party to return but not Yogi to head the government.

Why tremors? Because the poll results present existential challenge to them – their interests, ideologies, and narratives. Out of the three mentioned above, the opposition parties are benumbed by the shock. It will take some time for them to regroup and respond. The others are in distress too.

Now, to understand why the poll verdict should be sending tremors, it is necessary to comprehend its implications in depth. Briefly speaking, the return of Yogi [2.0] indicates the herald of a ‘new India’ that militates against their world view. As for the media, it is facing a serious loss of credibility after having stuck its neck out in support of Akhilesh and his party with great conviction and punditry. Post result it is desperately trying to salvage its image by misinterpreting the import of the verdict. What are their explanation and how do these differ from the reality? Let us examine.

The success of Mod-Yogi led BJP’s performance is being downplayed on three grounds: first, the number of seats of the BJP &NDA  came down from 312 (NDA 325) in 2017 to 255 (NDA 273) in 2022; second, in several seats BJP managed to scrape through with a very narrow margin and the result could go either way (read, therefore the credit for these seats should not go to the party); third, the BJP won many seats due to the AIMIM factor, as Asaduddin’s party had divided Muslim votes at the cost of Samajwadi Party.

What is the truth?

BJP won a total of 7 seats (Baravat, Bilaspur, Dhampur, Kursi, Moradabad Nagar, Nakur and Nentaur) with a margin of less than 1000 votes, which included 3 seats where AIMIM made a difference by dividing Muslim votes. Besides, AIMIM [also] made some difference in only two more constituencies viz., Bijnor and Sultanpur, where its [BJP’s] victory margins were 2290 and 5251 respectively.  On the other hand, BJP lost 5 seats ( Chandpur, Dibiyapur, Domriyaganj, Isauli and Jasrana) with a margin of less than 1000 votes, which could as well be its, had there been a small swing in its favour. Thus these marginal seats, whether for or against BJP, are insignificant when the contest is for as big a number of 403.

On the other hand, the media is tight lipped about a much more important factor. BJP’s seat tally could have been at par with 2017 or even more if only it did not commit a blunder in candidate selection. If numerous media, particularly social media, reports are indications, the central leadership of the party erred in this matter in three big ways: (a) they overrode Yogi Adityanath’s views on the matter in several cases; (b) they repeated tickets to many candidates who were not acceptable to voters in their constituencies; and (c) they took into the party fold several defectors from other parties which antagonised the voters.

As regards mistakes in ‘candidate selection’ a quick glance into the ECI website shows that at least 42 of the candidates who won in 2017 (sitting MLAs) and were given tickets in this election too, lost the poll. Another 4 candidates who joined BJP on poll eve from BSP, RLD & SP)) and were given tickets also lost. The impact was most telling in Purvanchal area (Phase 5,6,7 elections) of the province. Considering the fact that these candidates lost when the whole state under Yogi government was achieving unprecedented heights in terms of development, law and order and welfare schemes suggest their individual inadequacies as well as voters’ lack of confidence in them.

It is very significant to mention that notwithstanding the reduction in the seat tally the party’s vote percentage went up from 39.67% in 2017 to 41.29 % in 2022. Such an increase of nearly 2%  signals rising support for it cutting across social divides. This in turn implies  in turn the emergence of a new aspirational India that wants to jettison the chain of caste factors from the election calculus and move ahead.  This following data gives insight.

BJP’s incremental gain coming in the backdrop of reduction in the vote share of BSP from 22.23 % in 2017 to 12.88% in 2022 suggests that the weaker sections of the society who were BSP’s traditional voters trusted BJP and voted in a caste-neutral way. Similarly, drastic reduction in Congress vote share (from 6.25% in 2017 to 2.33% in 2022) suggest shift in other social groups too in its favour. On the whole various media reports indicate votes for BJP have risen across caste divides in this election.

It is a matter of interest to examine how even theYadav (the mainstay of Samajwadi Party) as a community voted. Consider this. BJP won 18 of the 29 seats in the Yadav dominated 8 districts of Etah, Mainpuri, Etwah, Kasganj, Firozabad, Auriya, Kannauj, and Farrukhabad. Hindustan Times quoted a veteran journalist Subhas Tripathi saying that vote percentage in the state and the region (Yadav land) indicated that barring Muslims no caste or community group voted for the SP en bloc.

What about Muslim voters? From media reports there are reasons to believe that the community (accounting for nearly 20% of the electorate) turned up in large numbers to vote and most of them voted in favour of SP. The rise in SP’s vote share from  21.82 % in 2017 to  32.08 % in 2022 can probably be attributed to Muslim votes than Yadav votes per se. The community seemed to vote tactically in favour of one single party whom they considered as prime challenger to BJP. The unprecedented Muslim mobilisation in favour of SP can be comprehended by the fact that even a communally driven party like AIMIM managed to secure only  0.49 % votes in the entire state.

According to a CSDS-Lokniti survey, a very small section of Muslim voters voted for BJP. Considering the large quantum of benefits that reached poor Muslim voters under Yogi government, this probably was disappointing. However, as said already, on the positive side there were evidences of the influence of ‘caste’ consideration reducing amongst Hindu population in their voting behaviour. Yogi model has demonstrated its determination to work for the people of the state cutting across caste and religion. To be able to retain power and continue to lead the state on its high growth trajectory, the party need to work harder to lift voters’ consciousness from ‘caste’ to ‘development’, while it can hope to garner more votes from Muslim voters going forward. Such optimism is premised on the strength of the Yogi model of governance. What differentiates it from other state governments?

It is marked by a policy of zero tolerance for corruption and inefficiency, strict enforcement of law and order, commitment to poor and downtrodden, energetic and unbiased implementation of public welfare schemes, hard work, honesty, relentless development of the state, and all of them with no quarter being given to ‘appeasement’ of any community or group. If the poll results are any indicator, this model, by whatever name called, seems to be appealing to voters in general and helping them to transcend the caste stereotypes. It is precisely this positive transition that is causing great disquiet and angst across the ‘spectrum’ referred to in the introduction of this article.

Incidentally, a brief mention of the impact of the poll verdict on media and BJP is necessary. Barring a small section the media has been after Yogi Adityanath like a bull compulsively chasing the piece of red cloth. They never liked him-starting from his dress to his style of governance. They seemed to had been the main Yogi-adversary more than the opposition party over last five years. They repeatedly hyped events, built up false narratives, egged on opposition parties, created large scale unrest and blacked out the prompt actions taken by the government in every case.  These included cases like  Hathras (caste violence), Lakhimpur Kheri (farmers agitation), Covid-19 deaths, to name a few.

This poll has completely exposed the media. BJP secured impressive poll victory in Hathras, Lakhimpur Kheri and all across the state on the issue of Covid-19. As polls came near, the media had gone all out to wake  up the opposition from hibernation and tried to convert a situation of ‘no contest’ to one of ‘fierce contest’ between BJP & SP in public perception. As part of this endeavour the media propagated dubious opinion surveys and tried its utmost, often in very ugly way, to incite caste feelings in voters during the entire course of poll coverage. Narratives like  ‘Yogi is a Thakur’, ‘Brahmins are angry with Yogi’, ‘OBCs are deprived’, “Dalits are unhappy’ were dished out to the public at regular intervals. The poll results have made them stumble on their face and left them with much lesser credibility than they had before.

Finally, the poll results must serve as lesson for BJP. The central leadership of the party need to learn to draw the fine lines of distinctions between ‘central control’ and ‘delegation to state leadership’ with regards to various organisational and governance matters. Uttar Pradesh has been the ultimate testimony of the success of Modi’s vast range of welfare schemes and development programmes. It needed a Yogi model of governance to make that happen. Uttar Pradesh daring and dream journey into the centre stage of national life must not be impeded by any interference, whether organisationally or administratively. The steady rise of the province is the best guarantor of Modi’s return in 2024.

Meanwhile, UP poll results are also useful guide for strategy making in states due to face elections before the finale in 2024. For example, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh polls are due in Dec 2022, MP in January 2023, Tripura in March 2023 Karnataka in May 2023,

Too much of central intervention and the ‘suspect’ policy of taking defectors from other parties and errors in candidates selection were made in Bengal and repeated in UP. These have clearly worked counter to the party’s interest and reduced the number of seats in both the states.

It will make lot of sense not only not repeat mistakes done in Uttar Pradesh but encourage these states to replicate the Yogi model of governance without any further delay. That is the surest prescription for electoral success in them  and of course in the Lok Sabha election coming up in 2024.

Left to itself, UP poll verdicts must surely be viewed as an important milestone for both BJP and the country.

In my house there is a plant whose botanical name is Epipremnum Aureum also called Golden Pothos and normally referred to as ‘money-plant’.  This money-plant kept in a glass container had in its tiny branches just two or three leaves and for the last around two years, the indoor plant sustained itself, meaning to say, neither did it give up life by becoming rotten or getting dry nor emerged healthy in the sense that neither any new leaves came nor its branches grew and the tiny plant remained tiny for the two years and in fact the tiny plant stayed intact and ever waiting to grow or bring in new leaves in the water glass bottle it was planted in and kept inside drawing room. The tiny plant did not require anything for its sustenance except normal tap water that too I forgot to put and at no point of time the tiny plant showed its angriness by getting dried out for my not having changed water for long, no question of soil or manure.

Regarding the benefit of nurturing a money-plant, it is said one of the important benefits of money-plant is that it attracts wealth. We are all also familiar with the myth of money-plant being lucky for home. It is also believed that as per the text on the traditional Indian system of architecture called Vastu Shastra, the presence of money-plant wards off negative energy and instead bring-in positive energy in one’s home. Other than lucky bamboo, money plants are also well-known to bring wealth and abundance in one’s household. It suggests that keeping a money plant at one’s house helps in removing any financial obstacles and expects to bring in prosperity and more good luck. Since the time this tiny money-plant was kept near the marble statue of Sai Baba of Shirdi in one side and stucco statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, the happy / laughing Buddha, which is once again a symbol of happiness, contentment and prosperity and which helps accumulate positive vibes on the other side in the drawing room of my house, miraculously the tiny plant which never grew for around two years started getting new shiny green leaves and also started to grow in size.

I am an equal believer in both Sai Baba of Shirdi and laughing Buddha. Incidentally, the direction in which they were kept was also East-facing. Now again, I believe in the phenomenon of keeping one’s temple of worship to face the East direction. It is not that any amount of wealth piled up or prosperity entered but it is nice to see new little fresh green money plant leaves adorning the space around Sai Baba of Shirdi’s head. At least, the new leaves brought-in a sigh of relief in the sense that as per Vastu Shastra, if the money plant has a stunted growth, then it is considered inauspicious. It is once again not that owing to the onset of spring season new leaves have come.  This tiny money plant with just two or three leaves has been there for more than two years and has seen two complete sets of four seasons during these years and now suddenly new leaves emerging puts one at a thought for the reason behind the same and the power that energized it. Incidentally, a big wooden sculpture of Lord Ganesha is also placed in South-eastern direction in the drawing room of my house where this tiny money plant is also kept.  It is believed that Lord Ganesha is the God who abodes in this direction and is a symbol of well-being and prosperity.

So, I am totally perplexed as to who helped in bringing back new leaves in the tiny money plant after a span of around two years and complete passing over eight seasons, was it Lord Ganesha, Sai Baba of Shirdi or the Laughing Buddha! Some power definitely helped in getting the new leaves in the tiny money plant but to find out exactly which power was behind is just something like finding the answer to how the universe emerged at any point of time or how it is ever expanding for endless periods to come. All said and done, comparing Nature’s splendid work and the magnificent work done by various organs of human being’s body day and night, we hardly pay any heed or be grateful to the functioning of those internal organs until and unless one or any of the organs starts showing some indication of malfunctioning. How many of us are thankful for our own body organs be it heart or kidney which continuously functions even when a person is sleeping? Even, we the humans, forget to take full breath which is but a basic need for each and every cell in the body, unless the time one is doing a Yoga. Oxygen, the life-giving gas is the basic for even Yoga.

In normal routine during the course of day or night, one hardly breaths-in to one’s lung’s capacity and the millions of body cells remain starved of the freely available oxygen supply. It is said, the real partner of any being, is one’s own body which remains with one till one’s death. All other relations may come and go but one’s body is the true, real and reliable partner. Whatever be the busy-ness of mankind, which is all but temporary, one should never forget to be grateful for the functioning of one’s own organs and similarly be grateful for the new lives born be it amongst the flora or fauna and be ever grateful for the creator of those lives and spend at least some part of the time in a day and little thinking about the same in between one’s so-called busy life schedule. After all, remembering the creator, being grateful to Mother Nature, doing only good deeds and thinking about one’s immortal soul is what is permanent and the real richness dwells only on these understandings.

Why is The Kashmir Files such a hit?

0

The Kashmir files movie is making waves.

It is trending on social media. Cinema halls are full. Multiplexes have had to increase the number of shows. Box office collections have soared. People overseas have requested special screenings and added shows.

For a movie without big banners and minimal star-power, the film is doing pretty well. It has indeed struck a chord with millions.

The Pundits are coming out of the cinema halls inconsolable. Others with no links to Pandits or Kashmir are emotional. Many are stunned, some are angry, some others speechless, but with a steely determination in their eyes. Many people are spontaneously initiating chants of “Vande Mataram”, “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Jai Shri Ram”. Many famous people are expressing themselves quite strongly, some have crossed the line of political correctness which was hitherto unknown. And EVERYONE unfailingly exhorts others to watch the movie.

What exactly is provoking such a reaction?

Is it that the average Indian was totally unaware of the atrocities that were committed in the Kashmir valley at the time? The answer is NO. He* might have been uninformed about the exact details and the brutality and heinousness of the crimes but everyone is aware that the Kashmiri pandits were systematically and selectively vilified for being non- Muslim and forced to abandon their homes and get out of Kashmir, fearing their lives.

Is it that the vast Indian populace has a special place for Kashmiri Pandits in their hearts? A community with no family/social connections which lived miles away? The answer is NO. The average Indian for most times has least consideration for others. He doesn’t even bother to dip his high beam headlight which would help oncoming traffic and prevent accidents. That’s the amount of consideration and concern he has for some unknown person living in the same neighbourhood/city. So isn’t it surprising that there is so much concern, sympathy and emotion being displayed for a community so distant from him?

The real reason why so many people are able to relate to this movie, I believe, is a very personal one.

The average Hindu Indian is generally a docile accepting person. That has been the ethos of the Hindu religion and that is the life he and his past generations have been living.

The last few decades however have challenged his belief to accept what is going on around him . Things have come to such a state that the average Hindu feels threatened and has progressively felt more over the last few years. He has noticed the rise of the Muslim community and its transgressions into his life.

Take the case of the azaan. Many small towns in India wake up to the Muslim call for prayer (Azaans) blaring from loudspeakers. The Supreme Court who should have banned it but has allowed it with some limitations on the decibel levels. Even those limits are defied everyday multiple times. The Hindu person who let it pass initially when it was just once a day and one small mosque now sees that they have become louder, from multiple mosques around and multiple times a day. He sees no way to stop it and even when someone talks openly about it, he sees the backlash and the futility of raising a voice about it.

It is not just the azaan but several other aspects- the occupation of public places for Namaaz, the halalification of the meat industry, the fact that mosques are never disturbed during road widening although temples are compromised and destroyed very easily, the emergence of mosques in railway stations, the media giving 24 hr publicity for some random unverified tweets against a Muslim cricketer while at the same time completely ignoring the many Hindu murders by Muslims, the increasing numbers of burqa clad women, love jihad, the increasing number of mosques and several other factors – in every instance, there is a gradual but definite creeping up of Islam which is impacting his everyday life.

All these factors combined with the knowledge of history and what Islam has essentially been- a religion which keeps growing, binding its people irrevocably to its fold and its tenets, being on a perennial quest to increase numbers- by conversion- many a times violent and resorting to pillaging and murder and lack of family planning and having multiple kids ( when the rest of the world is having lesser kids) have made the average Hindu feel very threatened. The left liberal media has been quick to stamp down any such ideas as Islamophobia and any person expressing such views is victimised and ridiculed and made a pariah. The average Hindu ( and many commoners in the west as well ) slowly but surely over the years,  has realised that it is anything but a phobia ( phobia is an irrational fear). His fears are borne out of his experiences, history and the everyday events and he increasingly feels that the fear about the growing influence of Islam is real.

There haven’t been many ways for him to express the feeling of being threatened. The once in 5 years election is one avenue he has used and expressed. Any vocal and outward expression, however, has often led to disastrous consequences, for ex- Kamlesh Tiwari.

The average Hindu is anxious at times what his condition might be if the same trajectory continues. He worries the same events that happened in Kashmir might as well repeat in his neighbourhood and in other parts. The audience love the film because it gives a voice to those feelings and affirms that his fears might actually be valid. Until now in the books and the movies, there was an attempt to whitewash the crimes of the other side but this film has boldly shown the truth and facts. It was long overdue. Now that such an expression of his fears is there in the world as an art form, he feels he is able to communicate his insecurities and fears if more people watch it whilst at the same time, not take ownership of those thoughts and subject himself to criticism or ridicule. That’s why the exhortation for others to watch the movie.

And so for the reasons above, The Kashmir files will be a runaway success and it should be. If not, there will be many more The**********files in the future.

The Kashmir Files– Review

0

Every decade of my life till now (Yes I started with “Only 90s kids will get this”) has had an iconic Kashmir film. Mani Ratnam’s Roja (1992), first in his Indian conflict trilogy, is set in ‘Srinagar, Kashmir’ about a Savitri’s mission to bring back her Satyavan; Vidhu Chopra’s Mission Kashmir (2000) a better version of Diljale (1996); Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider (2014) the final chapter in his trilogy of Shakespearean inspirations, this one taking on Hamlet.

Each of these films is considered a career highlight of the respective director and have sparked debate about Kashmir’s place in the Indian nation-state project, as also the state of the project. Considering the ascendant Hindutva movement, it is only appropriate that Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files (2022) has knocked on (and some would argue knocked down) the doors of this hallowed genre.

TKF has a protagonist, Krishna Pandit (Darshan Kumar) but his main role is that of an audience stand-in. The film’s real lodestar is the “files”, the line-up of tragic figures, some meet violent and immediate end while others with deeper and slower erasures. They are stories one has heard whispered over the years like the fates of BK Ganjoo, Girija Tickoo and Jammu refugee camps; the brutalities of Bitta Karate and Yasin Malik, the gaslighting efforts of Arundhati Roy and Barkha Dutt. The film dares us to reflect upon these historical brutalities and continuing injustices wrought upon the Kashmiri Hindu community.

The film juggles between the fateful winter of 1990 and a post Article 370 abrogated Kashmir to show how things have changed & some remained the same. Brahma Dutt (Mithun Chakraborty) a retired IAS officer hosts a dinner party for his old friends Hari (Puneet Issar) a retired IPS officer, Vishnu (Atul Srivastava), a retired journo & Mahesh (Prakash Belawadi), doctor and our protagonist, Krishna a student in ANU (a fictionalized version of Mordor :).

The parties have arrived because of business about the recently deceased Pushkar Nath Pandit (Anupam Kher), Krishna’s grandfather and old pal of the retired folks. As the night progresses many a truths and guilt are exchanged in remembrance of their dear friend, who died recently but stopped living a long time ago.

The film’s opening sequence features children playing cricket in curfew with a live commentary from an India / Pakistan match. It is very efficient in transporting the audience into the fraught times. Its efficiency is reminiscent of the opening sequence in the directors earlier venture, Buddha in a Traffic Jam. This is a time in Kashmir before AFSPA, a time when “Azadi” seemed within grasp and believing in any god other than Allah, be it Mahadev or Tendulkar, was met with flurry of fists or bullets raining down.

The not so effective part of the film is when it leaves Kashmir for Delhi and follows a student president election (ughh) where our protagonist, Krishna is leading a “Tukde Tukde” party’s campaign, guided by Radhika Menon (Pallavi Joshi), a stand-in for Ms. Roy and others from the ‘Jholawala & disheveled look’ clique. It is mentioned that many around them have a sedition case against them. We all know who they are, what is less obvious is their incremental value to the drive the narrative forward.

The vibrant and soulful Kashmiri Hindu culture, its native tongue, foods, folksongs, lullabies and Bhakti is both showcased and adapted. The Mahashivratri preparations go on as they ignore the fires lit outside right till they engulf Lord Shiv’s poster or the Kashmiri hymn as the Hindus flee their homeland sound like a solemn promise to return or the requiem of a grandma in refugee camps for the unfulfilled promise of return for the generation that fled or the Kashmiri Hindu who doesn’t know Nadru Yakhni (Lotus Stem in Kashmiri Curry, I am sure some will consider even this subtle BJP agenda, lol). Also never far away is Faiz’s “Hum Dekhenge” which is given a new angle with a turn of phrase, “Ab woh dekho jo kabhi dekha nahin”.

It is supremely ironic the that principle criticism of TKF from the expected quarters have been that it has no value other than as a propaganda piece for the ruling political party, BJP. What purpose was served by the myriad films labelled by some as anti-Hindu/ Hindutva/ India films like Final Solution (2003), Firaaq (2008), Mulk (2018), Haider (2014)? They were made by people with very strong views; views which they then sharpened into a story (some with stronger foundation of facts / reality than others), stories which some agreed & others opposed as biased or atleast not properly contextualized.

The fact is we have had movies like Black Friday (2004) and the climax scene of Shaurya (2008) (the latter is a phenomenon with no parallel) which had incisive and bold opinions about political Islam and more specifically its realities in the sub-continent. The pitch has become rather shrill here for the simple reason that the film is even more affective and it does not toe the line on “misguided” youth and the good Muslim tropes, like the others did. On an unrelated note, I have always found it silly that, people who after having been born into a religion and willing to put their lives on the line for a belief would be considered less knowledgeable and hence misguided, by some secularist / atheist who has never even bother to read a synopsis of the book which inspired these beliefs.

Anupam Kher as Pushkar Nath Pandit is exemplary, a man who has suffered a million deaths, his most sacred beliefs shattered; his life’s work, his ancestral home and homeland stolen and its history brought to a sudden and ill-fated halt. Also commendable is Chinmay Mandlekar as Bitta Malik, quiet and menacing presence in his earlier terrorist phase and silver tongued snake charmer in his later politician phase.

The tragedy is shadowed by its ghost throughout the film, while scenes like feeding bloodlaced rice to the murdered person’s wife shocks and paralyses, later the lack of rice in refugee camps comes to haunt. I kept remembering a line from Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil (1958), about a faulty detective who has an outsized impression of himself, “All border towns bring the worst in a country”. What does a country do when all towns have their own border enclaves? These are the ghosts we are left with as we leave, when the horror on screen comes to a close.

To conclude, this film is the Handpump moment in Gadar (2001). The shock of being checkmated at their own game will wear off and some Ashraf Ali will scream “Tum logon ko sanp sung gaya hain kya” but never forget there are many more shocks till we get this train to the Bharat of our dreams. Om Namah Shivay!!
