The importance of mental health in the COVID-19 pandemic

0

There was a time when mental health was not a major concern to our society. As humans, we are taught to hide our emotions and appear as if an event in our lives is not severe enough to affect the well-being of our mental state, no matter how altering or traumatic. if we show our emotions and feelings to society we are seen as person with a weak personality.

People in our country can admit that mental health is not as discussed as it should be. The fear of not being able to achieve something due to problems that aren’t physical, like a cold, essentially means those problems do not exist.

Why is mental health important?

Mental health is important because it is a direct result of mood, anxiety, stress and mental trauma. However, mental health has detrimental and even deadly consequences when not as prioritized as it should be. COVID-19 caused the entire world to recognize the importance of how we think, feel and act upon situations.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, the idea of a deadly plague spreading across the planet was a shock to many. For those suffering from mental health prior to the pandemic, emotions heightened due to prolonged isolation. The ability to be in the company of anyone was seized, as schools across the nation were remote for the then-foreseeable future. Both children and adults who may have not suffered from mental health concerns prior to the pandemic became victims of the drastic changes, resulting in overwhelming amounts of stress, emotions and social welfare distress.

Recommendations of staying indoors were placed when COVID-19 began to become more widespread. This meant interactions between people were limited to phone use and online platforms. While many turned to social media platforms such as TikTok to pass time, others turned their time on the app into a brutal playground. More than half the percent of people between the ages of 15-25 increased their usage of TikTok during COVID-19, according to a study by Statista.

Social media apps have gained even more popularity due to the need for digital interaction. Trauma has been transformed into connection, and creativity and short videos were created to share trends, life hacks and relatable content.

How can you improve your emotional health day-to-day?

There are steps you can take to improve your mental health everyday. Small things like exercising, eating a balanced and healthy meals, opening up to other people in your life, taking a break when you need to, remembering something you are grateful for and getting a good night’s sleep, can be helpful in boosting your emotional health. When is a good time to reach out for help?

Nitish should resign: Writes a Nitish supporter

0

Magical three words that every opposition leaders in Bihar dream about, almost daily… ‘Nitish Should Resign’. Well, they might be right or wrong, with their own contexts and reasons. However, despite being a big-time Nitish supporter, I am too of the opinion that the time has come and our Honourable CM, Nitish Kumar should resign!

Those following Bihar’s politics since 90s, will agree that the current political field of Bihar is way too small for the calibre and persona of Nitish Kumar. On the verge of attaining the role of Bheesma Pitamah in Bihar’s electoral politics, Nitish Kumar at present almost like a Star International Cricketer playing for the Team full of Unknowns.

Is there even a match for Nitish Kumar?

Not long ago and nearly before 2020 Bihar Elections, we witnessed Nitish Kumar as a political fighter. From leaving NDA to allying with RJD and till getting back to NDA, before 2020, Nitish Kumar locked horns and shared stage with almost every stalwarts. At present, there are no such stalwarts left and those left are ally.

Lalu Yadav, the friend-turned-foe-turned- friend-turned-foe, is at the dawn of his health and political career. Lalu Yadav’s heir Tejaswi, though puts a strong fight before Nitish Kumar, but is still at the learning phase of his political journey unlike his mighty Uncle Nitish Kumar. Undoubtedly, Tejaswi Yadav is the face of present Opposition in Bihar, but Nitish Kumar responding and countering every charge of young Tejaswi doesn’t always give a good picture. Especially when compared to the persona that Nitish has built for himself over years with a strong Nitish-Lalu fights.

Late RamVilas Paswan is no more around to challenge or to heap praises on Nitish Kumar, like earlier times. Chirag Paswan, still a novice in Bihar’s politics, did everything possible to reduce the significance of Nitish in 2020 elections. Does it look good on part of an established Leader like Nitish to get blamed and weakened continuously by a ‘Youth Leader’ with no track record in state politics?

Sushil Modi, the long term cabinet colleague and deputy of Nitish Kumar, is no more involved with Bihar’s politics. BJP’s plan on Modi is still a mystery, but with all good guesses Sushil Modi doesn’t seem to be getting an entry in Bihar’s political field anytime soon. Certainly a loss of some extent for Nitish Kumar, especially in managing the cabinet.

Rest other stalwarts, prominently like Sharad Yadav, have either lost their masses or are  staying sidelined. Now with all these explanations and reasons, is there anyone left Bihar, who can match or put a fight of equals before Nitish Kumar? Isn’t Nitish Kumar fighting the battle of unequals?

Where is Nitish headed?

With chances of becoming a PM face almost over now, Nitish Kumar seems to be becoming a CM with only one agenda.. Ban Alcohol!! Literally, His recent efforts and policies have revolved around only banning the alcohol and making an attempt to save this policy. There are other developmental tasks being done, but somehow or other Nitish Kumar doesn’t seem to be involved. Either being a socialist He likes to stay away from limelight OR He has spent enough time in State to consider the relevance of credits. The burden of being the ‘unanimous leader’ in the house, where BJP is  in majority, might be the other reason, which is keeping Nitish Kumar away from credits and in-turn from staying relevant!

Its not like that after spending considerable time in state, leaders start losing relevance. Jyoti Basu, Narendra Modi, Naveen Patnaik, Manohar Parikar and others have served their respective States for long, but unlike Nitish Kumar they ensured to remain at the helm of affairs. They made the necessary changes in their strategy to stay relevant for longer term in politics, besides getting necessary credits at National level.

A leader of the caliber of Nitish Kumar, who has always prioritized honest and developmental politics, needs to be identified at a bigger stage and must not remain confined at State level. Here we have new batch of ‘leaders’ in India, who are sweeping states with developmental agenda and then we have Nitish Kumar, who recently has  been in news only for his anger (remember the angry argument with speaker). Shouldn’t Nitish Kumar upgrade his strategy for staying relevant?

What we hope from Nitish Kumar?

Countless Biharis, across the globe, always had a high hope on Nitish Kumar for development. His image as leader was always linked with development. However, with changing dynamics and the recent wins at UP and Uttrakhand, have shown that Nitish Kumar’s model is nowhere standing before other models of running the Government. Yogi model of improving law and order seems more significant to Nation than Nitish Kumar’s policy of Ban Alcohol. Hemanta’s  push for inclusive development is Assam gains more eyeballs than Nitish Kumar’s developmental policies. Digital Governance is gaining momentum in every model and Nitish Kumar seems to be left behind, even at this front. Even Big Brother BJP would now like and must be in a hurry to apply some new model in Bihar’s governance, to make it significant like others.

We Biharis will never want to witness the mass leader of caliber of Nitish Kumar to be left behind, to get irrelevant or to start getting into the dawn of his career. Time has come for Him to leave the legacy of Bihar  into some new hands and to move to the Centre. As a Cabinet Minister, the berth He can easily gain given the current equations, Nitish Kumar can contribute way bigger than in Bihar currently. With role at Center, we might also see the old Nitish Kumar locking horns and sharing stage with stalwarts.

Another option or hope could be the Vice Presidency for Nitish Kumar! Given the experience, wide acceptability and knowledge, Nitish Kumar could become the de facto choice for Vice Presidency. He not only will bring honour to the Office but will also assume the significance and relevance as leader. Option might work for Big Brother BJP as well, as it will keep Nitish Kumar away from Bihar!

The fight He has put over Years should be known to Generations, especially the current generation with a weak memory. Certainly Biharis will never like to see the Face of Bihar turning into a Manik Sarkar OR George Fenadese of Indian Politics anytime soon! Nitish Kumar is here to stay and hope he listens!

Let’s talk gender equality

0

No, oppression of women doesn’t have a religion. It occurs everywhere!

Women being the prime soul of the planet are suppressed. And everyone knows about it but no one cares to change. Feminists take their left narratives and have spoilt the name for it. Nobody cares about feminism now. But don’t forget, women are still suppressed.

You must have heard the new term on the rise- gender neutral/ gender equality. Bringing gender neutral uniforms in Kerala and gender neutral campus at Nalsar were a welcomed move.

I am a man and I’m fighting for equal gender rights. That’s nothing to be proud about. Just an ample common sense will dictate you to do that. I will be fighting till my mother, my sister and till every women gets equal rights that a man gets. Not an easy job but let’s try our best to make this world a better place for women.

So let’s see how we could tackle this problem. No you can’t end this plight in a week or month. It’ll be a steady process but the results will be fruitful. The prime solution is spreading the word of gender equality. Teach men to keep their masculinity within themselves. Change begins from within! The next solution will be making gender neutral laws. Government will take care of it only after the people have some light about it. Oppressing women is an irrationality that the society has and it can’t be removed as easily as my hair falling from its roots.

As said earlier for changing society, change yourself. That’s the beginning of an era. Women are not your maids and sex slaves, they are the one who gave birth to you. Worship Maa Parvati and lynch a woman?

Now I’ll give you some examples were women are oppressed and take care to not do the same.

  • Rape: not all men are rapists and not all rape accusations are true. So there lies issues with both the genders.
  • Physical assault: Assaulting women only because they are weak is not masculinity! Even if a woman has done something wrong, assaulting is still a crime. Mostly this scenario occurs within the families. So women have no option except to remain silent. Wife or daughter, they are humans. Right or wrong use your mouth only. That too in the right way.
  • Sexual assault: this worst case occurs in workplaces specially. Women have to remain silent or the society will keep her aside. Duh!? For once keep the assaulter aside!!!
  • Workplace discrimination: women are not given promotions if they deserve and they are given a lesser pay scale compared to men.
  • Sports: women lack entering into a few “masculine” sports like cricket, baseball and soccer for example. It’s not because the govt supports but only because the system doesn’t support. How many schools and colleges support women playing these games?
  • Boys have free will to go anywhere they want at any time. But girls do have a restriction for the places they want to go or the time they want to go. Some parents and husbands grant permission as if they own their wives and daughters!!
  • Property rights: many women are denied property rights. The son gets the acquisition of the whole property of his parents in most of the cases.
  • FGM: Female Genital organs are forcefully cut and stitched in their childhood to keep her virgin until her husband opens them. Who are you to decide when a woman should lose virginity? Where are human rights now?
  • Socially blocking a woman for a mistake she commits. At the same time support a man when he’s wrong. What’s the logic kiddo? Calling her slut won’t make you a sigma male.

Raise a son who wants to fight for the country,
But not a son who fights with women.

Who created the fault lines in independent India?

Readers can see the below-mentioned YouTube video in which author Vikram Sampath and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor spoke to Rajdeep Sardesai, in the ‘India Today Conclave 2021’, on the fundamental fault lines of contemporary Indian history writing and debate. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qswlt56eCro].

The Congress leader Sri Shashi Tharoor, born in 1956, opened the discussion on the wrong premise. He said that the issue, many of them grew up assuming had been long settled, has now reopened fundamentally in past few years. No wonder, Sri Tharoor grew up in Nehruvian time. He went on to say that the partition of India happened on one key question: was religion the determinant of our nationhood? Those (Muslims) who were in favor of religion based nationhood left and made Pakistan and India was made for all without any consideration to religion.

Such simplistic statement had no basis. Before partition, Muslim population of British India was about 24 percent. Following partition, India’s Muslim population in 1950 became about 10 percent. While most of that 10 percent Muslims fought for Islamic Pakistan, they stayed back in India. Post 1947, Maulana Azad was branded by Nehru and his gang as Nationalist Indian Muslim. But Azad was actually used by Nehru to bring the Muslim leaguers, who stayed back in India, to the fold of Congress. Those ex Muslim-Leaguers, who stayed back in India, also helped in the retention of the mindset of Islamic nationhood in independent India. One who has basic understanding of Islam knows that inclusiveness and secularism are antitheses of Islam. So, the Congress leadership of newly independent India force-fed the majority Indian Hindus that if Hindus remained inclusive and secular that would make Indian Muslims inclusive and secular. At this point we need to revisit what Rahmat Ali and Rabindranath Tagore told about Indian Muslims and Islam (and Christianity) respectively.

Rahmat Ali, the proponent of the word ‘Pakistan’ observed in 1933: “India, constituted as it is at the present moment, is not the name of one single country; or the home of one single nation…..…. In the five Northern Provinces of (British) India, out of a total population of about forty millions, we, the Muslims, contribute about 30 millions. Our religion, culture, history, tradition, economic system, laws of inheritance, succession and marriage are basically and fundamentally different from those of the people living in the rest of India.…….. We do not inter-dine; we do not inter-marry. Our national customs, calendars, even our diet and dress are different..…… Religion in the case of Muslims and Hindus is not a matter of private opinion as it is in the case of Christians; but on the other hand constitutes a Civic Church which lays down a code of conduct to be observed by their adherents from birth to death……”.

Tagore said: “There are two religions in the world, which have distinct enmity against all other religions. These two are Christianity and Islam. They are not just satisfied with observing their own religions, but are determined to destroy all other religions. That’s why the only way to make peace with them is to embrace their religions.” [Original works of Rabindranath Vol. 24 page 375, Vishwa Bharti; 1982].

Keeping the above two remarks in mind, let us visit the political equation before partition. In the Central Legislative Assembly election of British India during 1945-46, all 30 Muslim seats were won by Muslim League. In the Provincial Assembly election during the same time, Muslim League won 87 percent of Muslim seats. In 6 Provinces out of total 11, Muslim League got more than 90 percent of Muslim seats. At that time, Muslim League was fighting elections on the single demand of creation of Islamic Pakistan. The results explained, beyond any trace of doubt, the actual intent of Muslims of British India. They wanted their Islamic Pakistan. Be it Bombay, be it Madras, be it Bihar, United Province or Central Province, – the mandate of Muslims was loud and clear in favor of Islamic Pakistan. From 1930 (Iqbal’s demand for separate state for Muslims) to 1947 (independence), via 1933 (Rahmat Ali’s ‘Pakistan’), and 1940 (Lahore Resolution), 1945-46 (Elections) and Direct Action Day (1946), – there was no ambiguity in the minds of British Indian Muslims about creation of Islamic Pakistan. How these facts could be overlooked in new independent India while framing its Constitution?

Sri Shashi Tharoor, in the discussion, mocked the history books of Pakistan for being grossly biased. But while Pakistani history books glorified all the Muslim invaders of India as their heroes, Indian history books have diluted those cruel and plundering invasions by downplaying those. In some instances, brutal and Jihadi Muslim invasions were said to be due to economic reason. So, Indian history books were equally biased too. Sri Tharoor was of the opinion that in newly independent India, it was right to cover-up the bad memories of history for forging a new national identity. He, in other words, said that even the foundation of a new nation can be based on gross lies.

However, in-spite of persistent pampering during six decades of Congress rule, Indian Muslims, barring exceptions, maintained their ‘Muslim first’ identity. The Mughals instead of getting Indianized, Mughalized India. Similarly, Indian Muslims instead of integrating with India started to Islamize it. The current Hijab row (February-March 2022) in India is a case in point. Wearing Hijab is no Islamic obligation for Muslim women. Historically, Muslim women of Indian sub-continent never used Hijab. They used Ghunghat, Pallu or Do-Patta. In the portraits of Indian Muslim women of Muslim era, Hijab is not seen. But suddenly some Karnataka Muslim girl students of schools started putting on Hijab in the schools violating the dress code. Who were behind those girls? Interestingly Indian Left-Liberal-Islamist cabal stood by the side of Hijab wearing girls. Congress, not surprisingly, went into silent mode.

The intention of asserting Islam in India by the Indian Muslims can be better seen in their anti-CAA agitation of 2019 to 2020. In December 2019, Citizenship Amendment Act was enacted by BJP government. It contained an easy process of according Indian citizenship to religiously persecuted Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Jain, Parsi and Buddhist who had come to India before 31 December 2014 from Islamic countries of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. But Indian Muslims, in connivance with Congress, Communist and other regional secular parties, launched a massive agitation by resorting to lying that CAA would take away citizenship of Indian Muslims. The agitation was mixed with a large scale anti-Hindu riot in Delhi during February 2020.

Muslims of independent India started playing ‘Muslim victim card’ from the very beginning. In the Constituent Assembly the Muslim League members, who did not go to Pakistan, played the ‘Muslim victim card’ and got their Muslim Personal Law to continue. From then ‘Muslim victim card’ has been an effective tool in their hands to justify all anti-national and illegal activities. In recent time Rana Ayyub (known as ‘Muslim journalist’ of India) and Nawab Malik (Minister of Maharashtra governments) have started playing the same ‘Muslim Victim Card’. While Rana Ayyub was accused of money laundering, Nawab Malik was accused of Islamic terror funding.

India has second largest Muslim population in the world after Indonesia. Indian Muslims never had to migrate out of India due to religious persecution like Rohingyas Muslims of Myanmar and non-Muslim minorities of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. On the contrary unlike non-Muslims of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, proportion of Muslim population increased substantially in independent India. There has been visible demographic shift in favour of Muslims in the Indian states of Assam, West Bengal and Kerala in past seven decades.

Congress, Communists and all so-called regional secular parties of India fail to accept that Islamic terrorism has been an international phenomenon. This, in recent time, had started in 1972 Munich Summer Olympic Games and became grossly infamous in 9/11. There are more than 150 Islamic terrorist organizations active in different parts of the world. India has its share in the names of Indian Mujahidin (IM), Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), Popular Front of India (PFI) and many more cross-border and international terrorist groups. These groups did dozens of Islamic terrorist acts in India during past two decades. But like a broken record, Indian secular gang (Liberals, Congress, Communist and secular regional parties) has been blaming Hindutva, Savarkar, RSS and Bajrang Dal etc. for the causes of communal tension in the country. The gang can’t appreciate that Islamic terrorism in India is a part of larger international Islamic agenda. Majority of Indian Muslims overtly or tacitly support the Islamic terrorism in India.

What Sri Tharoor and likes of him do not want to know is that Islam is all about dominance, – religious, social and political. Islam divides the humans into Momin (believer) and Kafir (non-believer). Kafirs are seen as the sworn enemies of Islam and Muslims, and the world is divided into Dar al-Islam (territory of Islam) and Dar al-Harb (territory of war). Brotherhood in Islam is not universal; it is restricted among Muslims only. Sri Tharoor is a well read person. Has he not read Calcutta Quran Petition of 1985 to understand the core problems with Islam? Even in recent time, Waseem Rizvi has challenged 26 verses of Quran in the Supreme Court of India for deletion from the holy book. Those verses are grossly and violently against non-Muslims.

Muslim apologists and their supporters in India cannot hide behind Islamophobia and hate speech to cover-up the anti-human and violent teachings of Islam, which makes Islam fundamentally different from the benign Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism). Islamists may point out some violent verses from Hindu scripture to support the violent verses of Quran. But what they would deliberately cover-up is that, the teachings of Quran are ‘prescriptive’ to all Muslims for all times to come; whereas the violent verses of Hindu scripture are ‘descriptive’ to Hindus only. No Indian Muslim can ignore or oppose the core tenets of Islam on which Pakistan was created. So, it is foolish and self defeating on the part secular-liberal Hindu intellectuals of India to expect majority Indian Muslims to think and behave differently for the interest of a peaceful plural India. They are bound to make India Islamic sooner or later.

Since independence, Muslim proportion of population has increased in India from about 8 percent in 1947 to about 18 percent now. Congress, Communist and all other so-called regional secular political parties have been siding with Indian Muslims for vote bank politics, but kept on expecting, to the point of demanding, that Hindus should not take this otherwise. Senior Congress leaders had the audacity to claim that Pakistan sponsored 26/11 Mumbai Islamic terrorist attack was done by RSS. Indian nationalism and secularism have become burden of Hindus alone. Modi’s India has hit at the root of Islam leaning Indian identity and Muslim-centric power politics. The ‘reopening of the issue’, Sri Tharoor referred to in the beginning of the article, was done by the Indian Islamists only with support from Congress, Communist and so-called regional secular political parties in past seven decades.

Indian Muslims have been trying, since independence, to get more ‘Islamic pound of flesh’ from the nation of India. Modi’s India has started resisting that. The new India tells that if Indian Muslims care for Islam, Islamic identity and fellow Muslims only, then they are not any part of today’s Indian narrative. Sri Shashi Tharoor said somewhere that Hindutva and RSS/BJP would make India a “Hindu Pakistan”. Well Sri Tharoor, it is thousand times better to have “Hindu Pakistan” in Bharat than “Muslim India”. It is as simple as that. The article ends with another YouTube video to explain how deep Islamism has penetrated India [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWVR3yjGpvk]. Sri Tharoor is requested to please reflect pragmatically.

Pariksha Pe Charcha 5.O from student’s eye

If you want to understand the impact of the most dreadful word “Examination” on the psyche of students just read the two stories written during two different time periods and in two different time zones but with similar stream of thoughts. The first one written in 1903 by Helen Keller in her autobiography “the story of my life” where she says, “the examinations are the chief bugbears of my college life. Although I have faced them many times and cast them down and made them bite the dust, yet they rise again and menace me with pale looks”, her emotions before the examination days are even more deadly when she says, “The days before these ordeals take place are spent in cramming your mind with mystic formula and indigestible dates—unpalatable diets, until you wish that books and science and you were buried in the depths of the sea” she becomes even more savage expressing the dreaded hour inside the examination hall, “It is most perplexing and exasperating that just at the moment when you need your memory and a nice sense of discrimination, these faculties take to themselves wings and fly away.”

Now let us see what exact are the words of our chief protagonist in the story “Bade Bhai Sahab” written in 1910 by Munshi Premchand. “God alone save you from geometry. If you wrote ACB for ABC, you would lose all the marks. No one cares to ask these cruel examiners as to what is the difference between ACB and ABC, and why they torture students for these worthless things. How does it matter whether you eat dal-bhat-roti or bhat-dal-roti? But these examiners don’t care. They see only what is written in the books. They want students to cram everything word for word, and this cramming has been called education.”

Stories from two different continents yet with exactly similar emotions, describing exams as the Pandora Box with stress, anxiety, fear, tension, pressure and cause of many other disorders resulting in exam phobic behavior. And if you are skeptical about the views expressed in the story “Bade Bhai Sahab” or as expressed by Helen Keller in her autobiography, just give a free composition writing task on the topic “Day before examination” to your child or student and you will find reproduction of same thoughts as expressed by Keller or Bade Bhai Sahab in their stories, buttressing the idea that not much has changed for over a century about the examination system. Even at time you will think that using the time machine either Helen or Bade Bhai Sahab or your student has plagiarized each other’s thoughts on examination.

And here our story takes a turn. The scenario in Indian Schools post “Pariksha Pe Charcha” has changed radically. The altered views over examination has turned this dreadful event to festival with the aim to bring out the best, with the aim to go on a journey for three hours to acquire knowledge not marks, to compete with self not with others, with focus on creativity rather than mugging, cheating or plagiarism.

And this paradigm shift among the students, teachers and parents on outmoded examination system to a festive event to celebrate the unique potential of each child is the result of yet another book “Exam Warrior” written in 21st century by Prime Minister Sh. Narender Modi to do away the negative connotations associated with the term ‘Examination’ with the crystal clear message for students, “Be a Warrior not a Worrier.”

A tale of two India

0

There are some incidents that get forgotten as time goes by. However, the learnings from them shouldn’t. So let us talk about two very similar tales from India and how we reacted and moreover, no one  really compared these two.

Sometime back, India lost terribly to the rival Pakistan in a cricket match during T20 world cup of men. There was communal slur thrown by allegedly Indian fans post the match at Shami, who is one of India’s finest fast bowlers. First things first, if anyone brings communal angle or questions the integrity of sportsperson, such fans are to be abhorred. They do not deserve any justification whatsoever, period. Needless to say, such fans do not represent any significant size of Indian population. But wait, did any Indian actually said so? We don’t know. Was there any “proof” that such comment originated in India or who said so? It must be remembered that given the influence of social media, quite likely that someone with a motive to defame India could have easily have made that comment with or without a VPN. So we do not know if some Indian actually made that comment. Quite elementary, isn’t it?

But without getting into any deliberation of whether it was actually made by countrymen or the implications of raising such comments, our so called sporting legends started the rat race as to who “stands with” Shami in such a “terrible” time. Needless to say that there are several vultures out there who are always looking to defame India in name of secularism and minority protection and they took advantage of this desperate attempt with both hands. As several big shots tweeted, western fraternity, even some of the fence sitters would have felt like questioning India’s secularism.

In such a scenario, no one would have actually taken a step back and asked themselves that if India was so so communal why most of the India’s biggest superstars, scientists, sportsperson are from minority. Let us come to the tale of second India. An Indian female athlete, possibly one of the biggest sporting superstar India has ever produced, Saina Nehwal, said something which seemed to suggest something positive about India’s government. To one of India’s liberal “hero”, ironically it was not acceptable. The second grade hero said something on his verified twitter handle, which would bring shame to any parent for having given birth to such pathetic human.

Even the fact that the terrible double meaning sexually loaded comment was made by a man to a woman, did not matter to the feminists. The same sportsperson who were on bullet train to quickly comment on Shami case did not find it suitable to even call it unfortunate for a comment made to a fellow sportsperson. Compare an unverified comment to that of a tweet by a blue tick and guess which one garnered the attention of our sporting superstars, and that my friends, is the story of two Indias where just because you are on “right” side of spectrum, you do not deserve to be stood up with, no matter you are a woman, a champion or both. But guess what Saina, after this, you are bigger superstar than all of them put together.

१:- उत्तर प्रदेश के बड़े और खूंखार माफियाओ के द्वारा किये गए अवैध निर्माण कार्य को ध्वस्त करने के लिए;
२:- माफियाओ द्वारा सरकारी ज़मीन पर किये गए अवैध कब्जे को हटाने के लिए;
३:- दंगाईयो को उचित और समुचित सबक सिखाने के लिए;
४:- गुंडों और अन्य अपराधियों को सबक सिखाने के लिए;
५:- गरीबों के ज़मीन पर दबंगो द्वारा किये गए अवैध कब्जे को हटाने के लिए;

Russia-India-China: Strategic triangle

0

Russia, India, China, commonly referred to as R.I.C is a group of leading economically powerful nations currently positioned at 11th, 5th, and 2nd positions respectively. The strategic triangle of these nations has been the center of geopolitics in the past few years, more so with china’s rise and rhetoric of the ‘Asian century’. These nations have mostly followed a ‘zero-sum game’ form of diplomatic relations. While China and India hold the world’s largest populations, Russia comes at the top when it comes to territory. When it comes to the projection of power on the global stage, both Russia and China hold the UNSC permanent seat and India is a strong and prioritized contender for entry into it

Permutation of relations in the strategic triangle

Russia-China-India

India on ‘diplomatic tightrope’ with Russia

Historical friendship: Russia and India hold a historical and time-tested relationship that started even before the end of the cold war in 1991. Both nations have deep cultural linkages and share people-to-people relationships. For India, Russia acts as a counter to US hegemony which can be seen in India buying of S-400 missile system from Moscow despite threats of CAATSA sanctions from Washington while for Russia India is not only a crucial partner because of its strategic geographic presence and rising economic prowess but it is also the 2nd largest market for Moscow defense Industry.

Balancing between Washington & Moscow: Relations between Moscow and New Delhi seemed strained as India drifted toward the west to counter ‘china expansionist policy and rising power’. India’s relations with the US rose to new heights with the formation of the Quad which Russia regarded as ‘Asian Nato’.Coinage of the term ‘Indo-pacific’ and increased partnerships of India with western European nations do not go well with New Delhi’s old friend. However, India indirect support Russia in the Ukraine crisis by abstaining from the UN vote on Moscow, buying Russian oil, and rupee-ruble transactions aimed at bailout Moscow from western sanctions proving the age-old partnerships remain intact. India is currently walking a ‘diplomatic tightrope’ to reach both its objectives of maintaining the friendship with Moscow & also counter China’s rise by closeness with the US.

Enemy of the enemy is a friend: China-Russia friendship

United against the US: The relationship between Russia and China reached new heights with the identification of a similar enemy: the US. Both nations aimed to counter western influence in Central Asia and the USA’s vision of Indo-pacific. Further western sanctions on Russia as a result of the annexation of Crimea have further pushed it into ‘Beijing’s lap’. China’s support of Russia in the Ukraine crisis and its investment of $5bn in the backward Russian far east region further strengthen relations with Moscow.

China-Russia friendship

The bone of Contentions: However, China’s increased presence in the Central Asian region can give a sour throat to Russia which has declared the region as a ‘Privileged zone of influence’. Region’s nations trade with Beijing triggered to $41.7bn twice that with Russia, furthermore most of the nations like Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan are already trapped in china “debt-trap diplomacy“. China has begun to identify itself as a ‘Near arctic state’ and increased its engagement with countries in the region. It established research stations in Iceland & Norway for the exploration of oil in both countries. China’s Huawei in agreement with Telegreeland is set to lay a 100g network subsea cable in the arctic. With assistance from Finland, china built its 2nd icebreaker vessel. China’s growing presence, influence & commercial ties in the region can strain its ties with Russia which prefers the Arctic five format {Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia, and the US} over the Arctic Council to discuss the arctic.

China's growing presence in arctic region

Backward leap in relation: India-China

Confrontative situation: Relations between India and China have taken a giant downturn from the 1960s slogan of ‘Indians and Chinese are brothers’ to the banning of more than 50 Chinese apps by India in 2021-22. Relations further strained with border conflict starting with doklam standoff and recent Galwan clashes. India joining of the quad, its opposition to the nine-dash line through which china claims ownership of the South China sea, and Beijing’s encirclement of India through strong relations with new Delhi neighbors {acquisition of Hambantota port of Sri Lanka, granting 99% duty-free import to Bangladesh and CPEC with pakistan}further degraded relations between them.

Will relations survive: India’s dependence on China for 80-90% of API and constant bilateral talks have helped relations remain alive. However, India’s policy of ‘Self-dependency’ and adoption of hardline against china makes it tough for bilateral relations to survive going down the road.

Russia-India-China: Chaos or Equilibrium

India and China’s support of Russia in the Ukraine crisis and maintenance of strong relations are aimed at gaining ‘strategic leverage’ at the global level. While Russia supports India for a permanent seat in UNSC, it works as a united front with china against the US. Russia’s role in the strategic triangle is to maintain a ‘Balance of relations’ between India and China as it regards both as one of the top 5 friends. Diplomatic Balancing is necessary so that the strategic triangle does not devolve into strategic chaos and is not used by a third party like the US to further influence regional politics. While the alliance of these three elite powers seems impeccable it is nearly impossible given diverse interests in the heated geopolitical arena.

India – The big energy reset

0

The big energy dialogue is taking place across the world, against a difficult political, economic and security backdrop.

On the economic front, seemingly rock-solid truths – such as the eternal rise of oil prices – are beginning to cause enormous pain to economies and people, across the globe. I think now is the time for a global transition to sustainable energy sources. And now, is the first and foremost opportunity to get rid of subsidies in oil, coal and gas and their almost addictive effect on our society.

In India we are moving our economy onto a low carbon path and in this context, the Prime Minister of India has already made a firm commitment and a timeline associated with the necessary transition to this path. They include a promise for India to get 50% of its energy from renewable resources by 2030, and by the same year to reduce total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes. And a pledge for India to become a net-zero carbon emitter by 2070.

We realize that the shift towards renewables is no longer a luxury. On the contrary, due to rapid market growth the major hubs of renewable energy installations have become a common sight in various parts of India.

Generation costs for all renewable energy sources are now at the same level as for fossil fuels – without additional external risks such as air pollution and disposal. It is therefore not surprising that India`s capacity in renewables has increased multifold since the beginning of the millennium.

With cheap renewables there is a double dividend for India, because it opens doors to energy access in regions where millions of people have been living without electricity. The sun shines on every roof. And renewable energy can be generated in an extremely decentralized manner, without needing an extensive grid.

The emerging trend now in India is that climate change mitigation is now firmly founded on national action. The mindset has shifted from a “top down” one, to one with a strong “bottom up” component based on national undertakings.

It is now clear to most sections of Indian society that the era of fossil fuels is ending. And real transformation of the energy sector is the undertaken by the current government.

Over the past two years we have seen an exponential growth in climate action by cities, regions, businesses, and civil society, in addition to national actions. This reality is, I believe, inspired by the Prime Minister of India.

Another welcome trend in India today is that non-state actors are clearly becoming the engine of both mitigation and adaptation action. The scope and scale of initiatives and announcements, some at the highest level, are breathtaking. This is helping to define a “new normal”, especially when one looks at:

-Actions by large Indian corporate giants– a record $100 billion in new clean energy investments by the end of this decade;

–Plan to repurpose a $4-billion (about Rs 30,000 crore) gasification assets for clean energy. India’s biggest company by market value will use syngas—a product of coal gasification— to make blue hydrogen at a competitive cost of $1.2-1.5 a kilo – perhaps, the cheapest in the world!

–The rapidly declining price of renewable energy and the explosion of mega solar and wind power installations;

  • –Plans to build a giga factory in Jamnagar for the long-duration energy storage systems for intermittent energy and manufacture of solar energy panels.
  • –The government of India is actively formulating policies and promoting projects that are leveraging advanced IT and OT solutions to drive the country towards a circular economy system. Two such critical areas are electricity from recyclable resources and waste recycling & management.

In my view, India could emerge as one of the biggest winners of the clean energy transition.

The EU has been India`s natural partners. I see enormous and growing synergy between India and EU to work towards a strong alliance to make the most out of technological progress. By end of this decade, India will be in the “fast-lane” to make energy poverty history and to bring green jobs and green growth.

All this illustrates the great progress that we have made in the partnership between EU and India. But it is certainly no reason to relax our efforts!

I strongly believe that India will play a significant future role in the Fifth Industrial Revolution as we march forward to sustainable energy creation and the substitution of fossil fuel-based chemistry with renewable feedstock-based chemistry enabled by renewable energy, hydrogen and CO2 direct air capture. And, in this mission, Europe will play a defining role in the years to come.
