Demonetization- The irony of the morality

0

With high pulse rate and slight apprehension, I ventured into the bank. A calm front desk person issued the coupon and guided me towards counter no 3. After waiting about 5 minutes, the currency that I brought to the bank and which could not be used out on street, was converted into the ones which could be used to buy things. There was no chaos, bank was almost empty. The teller was a beautiful young woman and looking at the customer admiringly. Well at least, I thought so and like to retain the freedom of self-praise. So in about 10 minute’s time, here I was back again on the street with the objective clearly attained, currency exchanged and I was free to spend on my whims and fancies once again.

That the above happened in Shanghai and currency was exchanged from US dollars to local Yuan is a separate topic altogether. India and Indians will never be the same post 8th Nov 2016. PM flashed on screens and announced the earth quake if RG will allow me to borrow the phrase.

What happened next is the reflection of the typical Indian character so engrossing for the minds that like to review and reflect events from a distant point. Let me also try and reflect on the issue of demonetization as simply as I can
Mr. Manmohan Singh, the honorable Ex PM quoted eloquently in Rajya Sabha that “In the long run, we are all dead”. This made me wonder if similar statements were also made prior 2014 general election in the congress working committee and majority agreed to honorable PM of that time and decided to relinquish power as a sign of monkhood. It can be argued that extension of allegedly corrupt UPA for the third time would have been a longer run than expected, thus it is not sure if Modi won the election on his charisma or UPA lost the election as its expiry date was far exceeded.

Speaking of Mr Singh, engineers like me wonder what actually an Economist does that is so relevant or rather useful to the society. We have like 800 million economist in India post 8th Nov 2016 anyways. All professions ranging from doctors, engineers to barbers and cleaners bring some value to society in their own way. I always fail to understand how an economist helps the society in a whole other than dishing out some formulas which hardly are understandable to the common people. If saying Open markets and ease of doing business in a country will bring the economic up-liftment in the society and this statement could only come from a learned economist then all I can say is …well Duuuhhh. Of course a normal human being was incapable to arrive at that thought process without going to oxford and completing some 13 years of economic research.

Another milestone in the issue is Honorable Delhi CM (rather Delhi ke Malik) unruly but characteristic behavior. Mr Kejriwal being an IIT grad and IRS officer himself, failed to understand why replacing the currency is at all required when he is the one who is the sole authority on corruption and has not been consulted in advance by the Chaiwalla PM of the country. Not so long back, he had announced on public platforms that if at all CBI needs to raid any of the officers working under Mr Kejriwal, they should inform him in advance. You can hardly argue with the logic of the whole statement as the MAN considers himself a crusader in all forms. Is it not the Hindu philosophy to guide the evil to come to god’s ways before having to kill them in case they fail to realize the chosen path? That was the gist of Mr Kejriwal argument and we must follow this verbatim.

That he retweets highly objectionable tweets to his 10 Million followers is a matter which should not be even discussed here and probably requires a newspaper in its entirety. Saying this will suffice that second string leaders in Aam Admi Party are emboldened by this inexplicable behavior of their leader and dish out nasty stuff on tweeter regularly getting abused in return by the opposite spectrum.

Another young and energetic political maverick, Ms Mamata did not really know how to react actually with the notification and thus reacted in most common human trait of frustration and loosing composure. That the army was sent to dethrone the popular WB Govt and operation OPEN SECRET started from the highway toll booth will be remembered for a long time as the political faux pas during the country struggle with the demonetization. One can laugh as well as cry over the simplistic minds in Indian state politics that start feeling endangered, the moment a central controlled officer is around. CBI raids are classic example of never ending claims of misusing the central govt powers against state level politicians.

Coming to the elitist in society who for the first time came to know that they have servants, maids, drivers in the house without any bank account and platinum credit cards, it is a matter of great curiosity on the writer part how these elites will behave if maid was to actually ask them to deposit the salary in her account online. Many will definitely faint not because they never expected this to happen, but probably they may have to share their banks welcome chairs with their maid sitting next to them and poor bank trainee receptionist asking the maid – Dear Madam, would you mind waiting in the lobby while I process your request to our first available teller?

What also came as a surprise was the uprightness and political maturity of some of Non BJP leaders to come out in support and praising the PM for the bold move. If you analyze closely, only the shrewd and experienced politicians came out in support which can be attributed to their experience guiding their political response sensing the public appreciation of the move as a whole. WE ALL SUPPORT THE GOVT IN FIGHT AGAINST BLACK MONEY- pet came the response from all in the melee of the parliament winter session.

Till the time of writing this article, I was not sure if RG can be put in this category or not as man speaks in contrasting manner and difficult to really fathom his train of thoughts.

Lastly the morality of the people in general, how can one possibly plan a move to separate the Indians from the ill-gotten wealth? The word JUGAAD has found its way in the oxford dictionary for a reason and if it has not so far the it must starting 8th Nov 2016: 2100 hr IST.

The Jan Dhan accounts were opened by the GOI for the benefit of the poor. That the accounts are used to park the black money is probably the simplest idea requiring standing ovation at the least. There were people dying for the lack of cash and govt had failed in number of ways to stabilize the situation with all the machinery at their disposal. However the hoarders had already started the new currency stocks and hawala is slowly coming back is an eye opener to the resilience of the wrong kind of Indians and innovation at their disposal for dealing with the tough situations.

How the country can be reformed if you are dealing with such sharp minds on the other side? One options will be to make a team of highly corrupt officers to come up with the plan of ant-corruption but the plan in itself has the possibility of failure in the basic premise itself.

If one looks at the situation from academic point of view, there is hardly anything that can be done by any Govt for the uprooting of corruption unless the society itself wants to make itself an honest one.

To end the article, only one thing can be concluded that PM tried with surprising political boldness to end the status quo but failed as most of the members of the society are against the idea of reforms. All that can be achieved by the mammoth exercise is that banks, flushed with money, should transform the loan structure for house, car, study loans and in turn another generation and large section of the society could be benefited by cheaper interest rates.

Are all the courts of India completely unbaised?

0

It has been 69 years, 8 months and 7 days since the death of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, and we have an initiation of investigation as per our supreme court by appointing a senior advocate and the outcome may just be on papers similar to his photo on the paper bill (Rupees).

There’s another past issue now which needs an earnest attention:

The issue of Kashmiri Pandits

In this issue, we don’t have any leader/individual but a whole complete community (whatever left of them) of the geographical head of our country which literally was (sad to say in past tense) once Maha Shakti Peetha.

In this case, the same supreme court says “it is difficult to have any probe and collect evidence on the issue more than 27 years after the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits”

Isn’t it a duplicity of our own? They will defend it someway if asked a question over this hypocrisy! and I may be completely wrong for which I must apologize (but does anyone dare/care or have a right to ask them?)

Why are incompetent people put into places who cannot even try to appear a bit fair?

This is not the first time if someone ushers the past! The above question can be easily supported by:

There have been cases against an acting judge of supreme court Shri V. Ramaswami of the supreme court (who even gained support from the then acting government), Justice Soumitra Sen of Kolkata high court (his words: “who is above making mistakes, no human being is infallible”), or even a very recent case by a police officer against the Kerela high court justice Shri P D Rajan for partiality towards some of his relatives.

Such cases scream at us saying that the people in the shoe of the ‘Judge’ or ‘justice’ may not be always right! So, one must consider countries past history and again look into the matter of the Kashmiri Pandits to ensure that they still someway get back to their homes and live there with pride! This would be the least what anyone can do for them!

The pseudo-left, ultra-left, or centre or liberals would never care for this inhuman act which we have put into graves of past. This may be hounding minds of Non-Kashmiri Hindus, but can one imagine the condition of those kicked out Kashmiris even today?  I sincerely hope someone who has the capability and ability attempts to give justice to this horrific issue if not to undo the past!

If we have the Supreme court to be ‘SUPREME’ then why are many of the reforms adviced by them getting sidelined by the past or present Governments: May it be in the slaughterhouses, money laundering, reservation, Indian Citizens holding two passports and currently MP’s  or even banning loudspeakers in the country during a certain time of the day?

Moral of the story: We don’t care lives of human beings if they are Hindus! We do not have any alternative government for this cause! As one in opposition has a legacy of the same person in question (person on currency bill), while the one in power has not cared up to now or even issued any statement over this!

MSM Fake News Monitor: Indian Express on Aadhaar

0

If you believe that under the preceding UPA government:

(a) Lakhs of crores spent on subsidies and MGNREGA wages for the poor in this country were siphoned off;

(b) Tens of thousands of fake PAN cards were in circulation;

(c) These fake identities helped the monster of drug-trafficking and terrorism;

(d) That Aadhaar’s non-implementation during UPA’s rule of 2009-2014—itself best known for scams—could have aided it;

Then the Fake News of the Indian Express on Thursday, “Aadhaar officials part of private firms that use Aadhar services for profit” is just for you.

Indian Express cites the example of three persons who were earlier part of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and now are with Khosla Labs who are offering Aadhaar-related services to clients such as Hero Motors, Samsung, Ola, Hinduja Leyland Finance among others.

The premise of this 1000-word Front Page story–which incidentally has more words than those spoken by the Prime Minister of this country on Indian economy—isn’t clear. But by inference it’s seen as a “clash of interest” and that these three gentlemen, by virtue of their position, could have influenced the decision-making of UIDAI in their favour.

(i) Now, how could there be a “clash of interest” if these persons have either left or are on a sabbatical from UIDAI till 2018?

(ii) How could these gentlemen influence the UIDAI decision when the Information and Technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has already stated that the section 19(5) of the Aadhaar Act 2016 reads: “If any member, who is a director of a company and who as such director, has any direct or indirect pecuniary interest in any manner coming up for consideration at a meeting of the authority, he shall, as soon as possible after relevant circumstances have come to his knowledge, disclose the nature of his interest at such meeting and such disclosure shall be recorded in the proceedings of the authority, and the member shall not take part in any deliberation or decision of the authority with respect to the matter.”

The clarification by one of these three gentlemen to Indian Express that the Khosla Labs “went through the due process of applying for a licence with the UIDAI like all applicants” still didn’t deter the newspaper from going ahead with the news.

The linking of Aadhaar with PAN cards and with banks and Income Tax returns etc. has hugely upset the corrupt ecosystem of the past which thrived on sucking the country hollow of all its vitality. Now endangered because Modi’s government thrust on transparency, these louts are making a last-gasp stand to keep the gravy train rolling. The “presstitutes” are a willing ally for reasons which get you no prize from me for guessing.

(Facebook has set out 10 tools to check Fake News. A few give-aways are headlines, source, evidence and photos. Indian Express on Thursday’s edition has been found out in peddling a Fake News).

Simultaneous polls: This is how we should implement the idea, whose time has come

0

The Election Commission has said that it is ready for simultaneous Centre and State elections, so has the time now come for holding the national and the state elections simultaneously?

No doubt, it’s not a bad idea. Synchronisation of elections would result in removal of perpetual cycle of elections taking place in one or other part of the country all round the year hindering development and governance due to imposition of unending model code of conduct. The political parties in government would get time to focus on welfare/development policies rather than slog it out on election turfs with their opponents during election campaigns.

Continuing elections keep divisive issues like caste & religion burning in public domain causing social schisms which at times, threatens the internal security of the nation. Frequent elections disrupt normal public life as administrative machinery gears up for the polls abdicating its entire original work. The security forces have to be kept deployed for prolonged periods.

Election expenses are huge; in 2014 LS elections, around 4000 crores were spent and in Bihar Assembly Election 2015 alone, 300 crores were spent. Add to these official figures the amounts spent individually by the candidates & the parties; the figures will go up astronomically. The need of the hour is to curtail the expenses and by clubbing together state and national elections, the expenses may be brought down.

Moreover, from 1951 to the mid 60s, elections to the Lok Sabha and the State Assemblies took place simultaneously and there was hardly an issue with that. May be the Congress was in power at the centre and in most of the states and hence the friction factor was not there. The President, the PM, the Election Commission and the Niti Ayog have openly canvassed for simultaneous polls but the other end of the political spectrum has so far maintained a studied silence.

Now, let’s talk about the misgivings that many experts and political parties may have on this issue of synchronised elections. Will it weaken the federal structure of the country as many experts feel? Is it an extension of BJP’s, one nation–one culture–one tax–one election regime? It’s true that issues for national elections and issues for state elections are entirely different and apprehensions that national & regional issues might get blurred. There might also be goal displacement, a strong national leader with charisma by virtue of his rhetoric & emotive appeal may score over regional leaders.

Since 1989 elections have taken place in 31 legislative assemblies in conjugation with national polls and in 24 of them, the polling percentage is identical for the major political parties both at the national level and the state level. Voters are generally confused when it comes to choosing two candidates — one for LS and the other for state assembly – at the same time, at the same place.

Normally, they tend to go for the same candidate in both the cases. Multi party system is likely to suffer. But all said and done, there seems to be no logic in doubting the mindset of a typical Indian voter. The voter may possess a rustic lack lustre exterior but from deep inside, he is capable of making intelligent choices. In 2014, LS elections and the Orissa Assembly elections were held together but the voting preferences of the electorate were different. The advent of cable television, social media and internet has reduced the distinction between global, national and local. All regional news are now national news and all national news are now global news; the vice versa is also true. The politicians should not underestimate the power of masses and challenge their conventional wisdom.

Regional politics has changed a lot and in most of the states, there is a contest between a national party and a strong regional party. Till the mid eighties, the share of the regional parties in Parliament seats hovered around 10 percent but the advent of the coalition era in the early nineties saw the regional satraps increasing their clout at the central level. The strength of these parties has been between 25 percent to 30 percent in the House since the last two LS elections of 2009 and 2014.

The regional parties were in the thick and thin of things during government formations under VP Singh, Deve Gouda and Gujral. Strong regional parties and dominant social identities have given a new dimension to federal politics in India. Regional leaders are no longer content to play roles at the state level but they have ambitions which extend into national polity. Regional leaders have gained more visibility as compared to the decades when Congress had political hegemony. State elections have become interesting with the intermingling of regional and national issues and as a matter of fact, no state election is less colourful and significant.

Simultaneous elections might adversely affect the chances of regional parties and sound a death knell to political and social diversity. I refuse to buy the argument that federation will be weakened. Diversity and autonomy to state units are laudable goals but there needs to be a common thread and that thread is of common belonging and nationhood; for this, integration is desirable.

Somewhere down the line, you do need to find a common meeting point between regional aspirations and national aspirations. You need to assimilate diversities and forge a common unity of purpose. The constitution has given strong powers to the union govt to tide over situations which threaten the integrity and unity of the country when it comes to dealing with recalcitrant state governments. Simultaneous elections will be a good step for integration of polity. Questions on social/political diversity should be best left for the voters to decide because since ages, the Indians have dealt with social, cultural and religious diversity with aplomb and survived under diverse political regimes of varied ideologies.

Synchronisation might pose problems because some state governments from the opposition camp would not like to give up power before the expiry of their tenures. A consensus needs to be evolved between the Modi Govt and the opposition on the likely modus operandi of simultaneous polls. Some constitutional issues have to be settled before proceeding further on the matter. For this, amendments will have to be done; there is nothing wrong with the amendments because the constitution has to be organic evolving with the passage of time and the change in society.

Vote on No Confidence Motion against the government has to be accompanied by an alternative government formation proposal. This feature of the German constitution needs to be incorporated to tide over situations that may result in midterm polls after fall of government. Article 356 gives the power to the centre to dismiss state governments before expiry of their terms. This article has to be amended for simultaneous polls to make sense as there may be situations under which president’s rule will be prolonged.

Midterm polls which keep the political executive under check and impart vibrancy to democracy may be a thing of the past if all the governments at centre or states have fixed tenures. Intense deliberations need to be carried out between all stake holders on issues like what will happen when a government resigns in the midst of its term.

If the period of tenure left is less than 6 months, the political executive may be asked to continue as care taker till elections do take place but what will be the repercussion if period of tenure left is more than 2 years? Should there be elections to elect a new political executive? If a new political executive is elected, what will be the tenure of his term? Will it be the remaining 2 years or 5 years?

Of course, the synchronisation factor will always have to be weighed. Some constitution experts feel that state assemblies and Lok Sabha have fixed tenures and they can’t be dissolved earlier; however the assemblies can be dissolved even before expiry of fixed term of 5 years as state or central governments do to take advantage of emerging political situation.

Articles 83 (1) and 172 (2) make it explicit that the tenure of state assembly or Lok Sabha can’t be extended beyond 5 years. Extension in terms can only be given during emergency. If synchronisation demands extension, what will be the way out? All issues need to debated and discussed before embarking on the decision.

Coming back to the point, simultaneous holding of elections is an idea whose time has come. Democratic traditions do change. The BJP led Govt has shown the political will; it’s time for the opposition to do some constructive politics. The political unity was achieved after independence. Electoral unity after synchronisation of polls will make political unity stronger and the greatest beneficiary will be our democracy.

Pakistan: A journey from Jinnah to Jihad

0

Pakistan is a country with so many paradoxes. Today has become a centre of global terrorism. Terrorism has become so mainstream here, that us designated terrorist Hafiz Saeed has established a political party and fielded a proxy to contest by-polls against against ex-Prime Minister Nawaj Sharif’s wife.

The proxy surprisingly came third in the elections which is very disturbing fact. Today Pakistan is going downhill on way to jihad against everything its first prime-minister envisioned.

Incidentally there is precariously low information about Jinnah in the public sphere.

A moderate Muslim personally with a Parsi wife, he was fond of wine, cigar and pork, never liked a radical approach in his personal view of religion. Coincidentally because of his hunger for power, he used religion to gain a political agenda which caused years of political fragmentation of the Indian society and isolated Indian Muslim. Its well known that he used religion to gain power but it’s now also clear he was much less concerned about Muslims in general.

After Independence when he reached Karachi, he made a statement that, those who are left behind, stay there and live peacefully“ which clearly showed he less concerned about his fellow Muslims as a whole. Pakistan was not created for Muslims it was created for few landlords who want to keep control over few resources. It is still very unfortunate that only a few families are controlling the nation.

In Pakistan they start calling migrated Muslims a “Mujahirs” and discriminate against them. Now this has created new problems in Pakistan and it later led to an era of Islamifiaction of politics which wasn’t a clear intention of Jinnah. Jinnah is so forgotten that even to this day Pakistan has not official biography of their first prime minister .

His ideals have been long been forgotten in his own land which has slipped into chaos where jihad is killing children in schools and its also feared that feared its creeping into the military. If it continues then it will eat the country from inside and would be the reason for its collapse.

This is why I support Narendra Modi

0

Let me start with the word “communal“. This is the most repeated word for Modi (or, for that matter BJP). As of 2012 data, in terms of number of riots occurred per 100,000 people, Gujarat was ranked 23 out of the total 35 states and union territories, which is way lower than other sates. There have been countless riot incidents post independence, but Gujarat was the only state to setup a court to investigate the Godhra riot. Modi is not communal.

Now, let’s talk about some constructive things- Development on all fronts, decision making ability and intent of the government. Why have we become so blind to the facts and so biased in our arguments? Why have the intellectuals become so hypocritical? Why the liberals have become so selective? And, why the common people are not common these days?

Good work/intent by any leader irrespective of any party should be praised and at the same time as a citizen we have all the rights to question and debate any move by the government.

Both should go hand in hand, no doubt in that. But all my intellect stops and forces me to ponder on the selective amnesia of some people who continuously try to spread the falsehood and make totally fake interpretation of things.

Why they do so? We may have some alignment with a party, and the party workers are forced to take the side of their alignment, but what about those common people who are intentionally being biased towards a party or a person? Why are they doing so? It bothers me. It forces me to think, express and let the people know that the common people cannot and should not be biased. We have to open both eyes, widened and pointed towards every situation. This selective amnesia has to be cured.

  • How can I not support Jan dhan yojna through which more than 20 crore bank accounts have been opened till date?
  • How can I not support Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which created a widespread awareness among people of this country to make India a better place to live?
  • How can I not support Ujjawala scheme which helped millions of poor by providing Gas Cylinders?
  • How can I not support “Make in India” , “Digital India” , and “Skill India” initiative primarily focusing on job creation and creating better opportunities for the youth of this country?
  • How can I not support the efforts made to strengthen the foreign relations and bring in more opportunities?
  • How can I not support the settlement of the Indo-Bangladesh border issue?

Having said all this, let’s face the reality, let’s observe the developments of his regime. Let’s not forget we are judging him for just 3 years. He does not have any magic wind which can turn around things overnight. A country with a population of 1.25 billion people already has so many tangled rules, regulations and processes which cannot be untangled in such a short span.

There is a man called Modi who is trying to change the thinking of this country. Why we don’t have Facebook, Google, Apple like companies in our country? Why we only dream to work in such companies and not to create one? Why most of us prefer foreign countries for studies? There is a void within us, a void which has to be filled. It has to be filled with a purpose, a thinking to do something for this country, to break the stereotype and  Innovate our mentality. Above all- too work hard, and think big. There is no free lunch in life. We have to work hard for the collective betterment.

This man has sacrificed so much for this country and this man is trying hard to fill this void with blooming ideas. Whatever he had, his family, his home- he left it for this country.  He deserves support, not the biased views. He changed the political discourse of this country, and I am with him.
I will support Modi. I will support all the moves which are for the benefit of this nation. It would be so disingenuous to appear neutral and to portray my thoughts in a biased manner.

No, I am not a right wing fanatic. I am an Indian, I am a Hindu, I am a common man striving for development. Development for all.

Is the economic scenario in India as bad as some news reports suggest?

0

One is watching the news and getting worried over the state of economy. One gets to know that economy is in shambles, country is going to dogs and growth is turning into diminution if one believes the data being flashed on screen. One is also bombarded with the poor, worried businessmen, workers who are alarmed at the situations.

In wake of this, one decides to do some talking/walking together to get to know the reality. One is mesmerized with the data thus the search or research results are in data format. Let me share what I feel.

60 percent of the population belong to poor or below poor segment in the country. The meaning of economy is a cruel joke for them thus they are to be excluded from any experimentation. They will never be affected by the growth rate in the country, let it be anywhere from 1 to 20%.

35 percent is middle class consisting of serviced class and small business people. Let us not consider the unemployed person as they were anyways in deep trouble and economy slow down does not affect them any further than remote chances of getting a job anywhere

Remaining people in service – it is analyzed that no drastic salary reduction has occurred in any sector in India in last one year. Salaries have although increased to certain extent and percentage of increment differs widely for the sector and ranks. But it can be considered safe that salary have not been reduced. If you look at the inflation and availability of goods/services, it is reasonable to estimate that service class is able to manage their life much in the same way they were one year before. Their income and expenses are almost matching without getting overtly affected by the “economic slowdown”.

Small businessmen are one of the affected lot in the economy slow down. This is something which needs a deeper analysis. India is a vast country and it is safe to consider a country with at least 500 locations consisting of megacities, metropolitans, cities and towns.

On a very conservative average, it is being estimated that each locations had at least 200 people who were reasonably well off owning to the state of affairs and prevalent conditions of black money transactions, bribes, commissions, property sale/purchase etc etc. on a conservative side, it is being again estimated that each such individual was able to rotate INR 10,000 a day generated through such “deals”. Even though it is a very conservative estimate of locations and individuals, one must be astounded to arrive at a value of 500 X 200 X 10,000= INR 1,00,00,00,000 (one hundred crores) money changing hands every day. This money was the main source of small business customers as these people involve in reckless buying of watches, TV, cars, jeweler, apartments which give the momentum to small business.

It is obvious that present laws, GST, real estate bill, currency usage limitation has drastically reduced such deals and resulting in the slow sales in the market. This in turn slows the consumer products movement and further results in reduction in manufacturing sector slow down.

Overall trade is affected in the above manner and market needs to balance itself after getting the due price correction. One example is real estate price which has seen about 20 % price correction on its own.

Hope the Govt is able to provide more employment to people and settle the issue once and for all

PMGSY- Avg Road Leght Per Day
