The Kashmir Files फिल्म रिव्यु 2022

The Kashmir Files

The Kashmir File

FIFA 22 – A world without border

0

As we approach the penultimate round of 22nd edition of the most viewed and colorful world cup in history of sports, the most talked about match will be between France and Morocco. The exemplary performance of the North African side, nicknamed The Atlas Lions has to some extent overshadowed the other two more established semi-finalists. The whole world may for a change be more eager if not to be equally interested to witness the lions hunting in pack over one of the greatest football magicians of our time.

Morocco will have the support of the entire Arab world and as underdogs will also be cheered by most neutral fans. However their path to semis is like history being re-written. In their five matches in the tournament so far, Morocco has faced two of its former colonizers – Spain and Portugal. Spain colonized northern parts of the country along the Mediterranean coast, while the Portuguese largely took control of strategically-placed coastal towns in the 16th/17th century. In the group stages, Morocco also brushed aside Belgium, who never formally colonized the North African kingdom but were a former co-administrator of the Tangier International Zone, which served as a ‘neutral’ region under several European countries’ administration between 1924 and 1956.

France has deep rooted bitter sweet connection, having occupied large parts for more than four decades with Rabat gaining independence in 1956. French is spoken by more than one third of the Moroccan population with Spanish being the second and third language in the previously occupied regions.

For people from the subcontinent we may relate to the burning desire of the Moroccans and greater Arab world to succeed as we have felt in the early days of the cricketing encounter with our erstwhile rulers.

Football may have finally crossed political maps with the match being more of a contest of diaspora against players whose roots lie in the African content. A few notable examples from Moroccan side being Spain-born Achraf Hakimi, France-born Sofiane Boufal and Romain Saiss. Even their coach Walid Regragui was born and raised in France. As far as the French team is concerned, 13 players have strong connect to Africa– Mbapee to Cameroon & Algeria, Konate/Kante/Diaby to Mali, Tchoumanni to Cameroon among the notable ones.

It may not be very wrong to say in today’s globalized world, countries exist on maps but sports is between two playing elevens. Only time will tell which country progresses, but Africa is no longer behind Latin America in producing some of the best footballers. It may not be a surprise to see Morocco taking clue from their brother country Tunisia who caught France on the wrong foot in the group stage.

Himachal Pradesh election: A rumble in the Jungle

Himachal Election: The real box office stuff and the kind of succour that Congress badly needed after a prolonged dry spell of no show.

So Amidst all the glitz and glamour of Gujarat Election and while BJP walking over it with jaw dropping numbers flamboyantly, I feel the Himachal win by congress is nothing short of box-office stuff and needs all the grabbing of eyeballs.

Himachal being the home state of BJP president JP Nadda and its heavyweight minister Anurag Thakur and given the fact that in General election 2019, BJP won the hilly state hands down with almost cornering 60% vote share, so this election was considered to be cake walk for BJP which was not be true as they lost to congress which won a complete state election and snatched a victory under BJP’s nose after almost 18 losses and 4 years to be precise when nobody gave them an outside chance.

So what worked for congress? Really it was as a silent door to door campaign without any political heavyweights, no star campaigners except Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and CG CM Bhupesh Bhagal and largely local grassroot party leaders from state. No Rahul Gandhi no Mallikarjuna Kharge or any central leadership ever visited the state to keep it simple and that brought the x factor with them like a blessing in disguise.

There was no show of pomp, and grandeur with big election rallies by state units, no use of foul language against opposition also congress kept its internal rebellion and factionalism in check without coming to media glare.

The most important of all was for congress to be very precise in fighting anti-incumbency with identifying key areas and lapses by ruling party that could hurt BJP and it did in fact.

With the promise of old pension scheme (OPS) beforehand in a state where most employment opportunities come from Govt sector, tackling unemployment with one lakh job creation, managing price rise, providing financial assistance of rs 1500 to all women from 18-60 age group, and channelizing the perceived public resentment against Agniveer scheme as Himachal send lot of guys into defense forces every year the congress party built an issue based narrative that got traction and resonated among people.

This Himachal Election to me was like the famous battle ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ between Muhammed Ali Vs George Foreman which Muhammad Ali won in the 8th round knock out after strategically taking the body blows and exhausting the much powerfull ‘Geroge Foreman’ and wrestling a great win enroute billed as one of the greatest ever battle fought in the rings.

Gujarat proved yet again- Invincible forte of the BJP

0

In India elections always kaleidoscopic to viewers. It is obvious that in Gujarat the Congress Party accepted the defeat before contesting the elections.  Because they knew that they were not in touch/in communication with the electorate after 2017’s impressive performance of being a runner-up. The Congress party leaders at the top, like leaders of the western democracies, often take leave and go on holidays to relax in unknown destinations.

They resurface only when there are elections. They neither care about their electorate nor their cadre in between. To the big bosses of the Congress, they are all immaterial and their personal pleasures are paramount. Contrast this with that of the BJP’s relentless work.

Coming to Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra that emphasizes on the ideological perspective has no takers. It is a failed bid. Nowadays, old loyalties and ideologies are fading all over the world. New definitions and strategies are emerging. The Left-liberal ideology which Rahul Gandhi envisages is at peril in many countries. In India it has been overplayed for generations. Therefore, it has been worn out. When the Congress was in power, the party used the liberal ideology more in breach than in observance.

To the delight of keen observers of the electoral process, Gujarat once again proved as an invincible fort of the BJP. The BJP broke all records (even the earlier Congress’s C.M. Madhav Singh Solanki’s record margin of 149) in this 2022- election to gain maximum percentage of vote share (52.8%) and seats (156/182). When prime minister Modi started campaigns, many political pandits questioned—‘why is he doing so, if not the BJP is doubtful of winning Gujarat’?

Now, with this victory, it is proved that the prime minister campaigned only for winning at this magnitude! The Congress micro-level-campaign in Gujarat led to a Nano-level outcome. The only saving grace for the Congress is the Himachal Pradesh. Victory in that hill-state is in no way ideological. The Congress party in its desperation to win, promised voters of Himachal, the revocation of Compensatory Pension Scheme (CPS) and bringing the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).

Similarly, repeal of Agnipath for the recruitment of the army. These two promises coupled with dissidence in the state BJP unit helped the Congress win. Himachal Pradesh is a small hill state. Many people in the state are either working in state government departments or are in the army. Already (with the win of the congress) the state government employees have started celebrating and calculating their monetary benefits!

Let’s see what these pension schemes are. It is the Congress party that has brought-in (through an enactment in 2013) the great reform of the National Pension System. In the UPA-government, under the aegis of Sonia Gandhi, there was a National Advisory Committee (NAC) that proposed this change in pension. The advisory body stated that the retired employees’ pensions were a huge burden on the governments both in states and at the Centre. The Old Pension Scheme (OPS) was started in the British Era by the British ruling for the retired employees during that time. Now, in Britain, it is no longer followed.

At that time, when the British ruled, the average life-expectancy was less. If a person lived up to sixty-years, people used to celebrate his sixtieth-birthday with fanfare. Now sixty is a new-forty. With the medical advancement, with new life saving drugs in place, the life-span has increased tremendously. Since the retired employees get handsome pensions commensurate with their service, they are able to afford health-care properly and are able to live longer. The longer they live, the longer they get pension.

For instance, in the state of Telangana, there are two lakhs of state government employees and one-half lakh retired-employees. Put together, for three-half lakh employees, the state pays through its exchequer. Hence, the two-lakh productive employees (employees that are doing job/work) are generating money to pay the one-half lakh pensioners (of course, the government also gets money through direct and indirect taxes).

In the new Compensatory Pension Scheme (CPS)) the employee, while doing service, every year has to contribute some amount towards pension/provident fund, the matching amount is borne by the government and is linked to an insurance company or so. This way, the government need not waste what is generated by the young productive employees. Thus saved amounts could be utilized for state/nation-building measures. Recently, Greece (a country in the European Union) went into an economic recession. The reason being, it has many aged-people who needed to be given pensions and very few youngsters that could work and generate money.

In Europe the birth-rate is low, unlike in India. In India there is a young population. Thus we have demographic -dividend. So, the Compensatory Pension Scheme (CPS) lessens the burden of the government to move forward to progress. In fact CPS is enacted by the Congress. It applies to those employees that have joined service in 2004 and thereafter. The Congress party now wants to go back on pension scheme only for electoral-benefit.

Agnipath is also a progressive reform. But the opposition is opposing and misleading the youth. The BJP needs to educate people on these fronts. Especially the OPS that has a higher bearing across all states wherever elections are to be held. In the whole scenario of elections, AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) is a minor player that is punching above its weight. The party’s influence is mainly restricted to Delhi and the neighboring Punjab.

Apart from Arvind Kejriwal, the party has no known-face or leader in other states. Whether this tiny-puny party with no proper ideology continues or fizzles out in future no one knows. However, the Congress’s weakness, right now, is the AAP’s strength. Although the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) result is encouraging to the AAP— would an NGO-like party— could it become a pan- India-party— is a big question.  In any case, it seems right that the BJP and prime minister Modi are in an unassailable position right now and could easily win in the 2024 general election.

Analyzing the election mandate

0

After a long-drawn tussle between political parties, Results for all major Elections have been announced. There isn’t the dominance of a single party in these as AAP has won MCD, BJP has conquered Gujarat and Congress will rule Himachal Pradesh. Various regional parties have also won in the byelections. These results have huge implications which need to be discussed.

Let’s start with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Aam Aadmi Party has got the majority in MCD while BJP, which has been ruling the MCD for 15 years, has been evicted. AAP again claims to make MCD corruption-free but it has faced defeat in the constituencies of Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, two big ministers of Kejriwal’s Delhi government. This is indeed the victory of AAP but Arvind Kejriwal has lost on the issue of “corruption”.

Kejriwal’s publicity stunt of demanding Bharat Ratna for Sisodiya and Satyendra didn’t go well with the Public. BJP, despite facing 15 years anti-incumbency and lacking strong leadership, has won 100+ sets. This will also be the first time that Kejriwal’s Govt will face strong opposition from BJP as it has over 100 councillors. There lies a strong message for Kejriwal in this mandate that It must not take 2025 for granted. A Revamped & Strong BJP Unit can surely challenge him.

Coming to Himachal Pradesh, as it has come as a big setback for the BJP. It must be said that BJP was not defeated by Congress but by BJP itself in Himachal. Party’s one camp tried its best to sabotage the party from within and party failed to manage it within the campaigning period. Internal Revolt was evident in the byelections of last year as well but no coercive steps were taken in due time by the central leadership too. With the results out, It must be revealed that most of the rebels were contesting against BJP candidates because they were shocked by the behavior of Mr. Nadda. The way allegations were levied upon JP Nadda, I don’t remember it has been done against any previous BJP president ever. Strong decisions shall be taken to end the dynastism and factionalism in Himachal Pradesh BJP for better results in the next election.

Coming to the nightmare of opposition, Gujarat. Amit Shah not only ensured victory for BJP in Gujarat Elections this time but also made sure that it is large enough to outshine the 2017 mandate. BJP’s seriousness for Gujarat can be judged by the fact that PM Modi did a Road Shown in the state on 11 March, just a day after a historic victory in Uttar Pradesh.

This election will also be remembered for the coordination of RSS & BJP on the matter of ticket distribution. Ground feedback from RSS was given a priority in the candidate selection. Amit Shah not just worked backstage to oversee the electoral management but also handled the campaigning by doing 24 rallies in 108 constituencies of the state. PM Modi did 39 rallies which covered over 125 constituencies. His historic last road show was 50-Kilometeres long! This election was a WAVE election and will be remembered for a long.

This mandate has a lesson for every party. BJP needs to learn from its mistakes in Himachal while Congress needs a strong revamp in Gujarat before it gets too late for the 2024 Elections. AAP needs to re-establish its connections in the IB because they are limited to a few traces in HP as well as Gujarat.

Sad story of an evil Israeli Woke

Fifty-third edition of International Film Festival of India was held from 20 to 28 November, 2022 in Goa. At the closing ceremony of the festival, Head of Jury Nadav Lapid said that all Jury Members were disturbed and shocked by the Indian film The Kashmir Files which was a propaganda and vulgar movie. He felt totally comfortable to openly share these feelings. Lapid further added that in the spirit of the festival, such critical discussion was essential for art and life.

Navad Lapid made such uncouth comments on the said film without any critical discussion. He uttered the two words in a hollow manner. It was a stupid and subjective comment on the part of Navad Lapid. It was as if, anybody could call Navad Lapid a terrorist without objectivity.

Navad Lapid used his position of Head of Jury to launch a brutal political attack on BJP ruled India via the movie The Kashmir Files. It appeared as if, Navad lapid was invited to insult the government of India. He had the audacity to make his said vicious remark about the film in presence of the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Sri Anurag Thakur. He knew that the Minister would not cut him in to size for the Indian practice of Atithi Devo Bhava.

Ms Manidipa Mukherjee, the Managing Director of National Film Development Corporation, first proposed the name of Navad Lapid as Head of Jury for the festival officially. Navad Lapid, an Israeli Jew himself, was notorious for being a bitterly anti-Israel Woke. He was a proclaimed supporter of terrorist organization Hamas too. Navad’s name was later approved by Sri Apurva Chandra, Information and Broadcasting Secretary of India. Lack of initiative to check the background of Navad Lapid, before inviting him, was a major fault on the part of concerned Indian bureaucracy.

The Kashmir Files was an Indian movie based on the genocide and exodus of Hindus from Kashmir valley due to Jihadi attacks on them during 1990s. Navad Lapid initially thought that he could make such uncouth remark about the movie and get away easily. His Indian cohort also must have given him that assurance. But, severe backlash from Hindus of India, in the social media, made Navad Lapid very nervous.

While the Indian gang members of Navad Lapid like Saba Naqvi, Arfa Khanum Sherwani, Rana Ayyub and Swara Bhaskar et al were dancing at his immoral stupidity, Navad Lapid started giving half cooked and subjective clarifications from outside India. He could never explain on what criteria he had made such an uncivilised remark about the movie The Kashmir Files. On the contrary, he said that no one could specify such criteria. Lo and behold, there you have found your Woke Head of Jury.

It was clear that Navad Lapid had no understanding about the genocide and exodus of Hindus from Kashmir valley beyond the briefings he got from his Islamist-Woke friends. He never thought that his subjective and politically motivated remark would be challenged so severely by Hindu Indians.

First Navad Lapid said that the popular Hindu Indian reaction against him was cheap and politically motivated. Then he said that he would have made the film differently. Lastly, he cried against the phantom support for the film from the Indian Regime. By showing an absolute lack of empathy towards the hundreds of thousands of persecuted Hindus in the Kashmir valley, Navad Lapid has confirmed him to be a supporter of Islamic terrorism in India in general and Kashmir in particular.

Coming back to the basics, ‘vulgar’ meant something which was rude or likely to offend people and ‘propaganda’ meant information and ideas that may be false or exaggerated. But during the silly chatter of his last ten days, Navad Lapid has miserably failed to respond to the challenge of Vivek Agnihotri, the Director of The Kashmir Files, to show which scene of the movie was ‘vulgar propaganda’ and how?

The more subjective arguments Navad Lapid placed in support of his original remark, the more stupidly arrogant and hollow he looked. Lapid also could never explain with examples why The Kashmir Files was a ‘vulgar propaganda’ movie vis-à-vis Spielberg’s world-famous movie Schindler’s List. Following Lapid’s footsteps, anyone could say that Schindler’s List was a grade one ‘vulgar horror’ movie only. It is now up to the Indian Islamist-Woke gang to reject the fact of ethnic cleansing of Jews officially.

Do we really need to smash Brahminical-Baniya patriarchy?

0

WE ARE COMING FOR YOU“, was the clear psuo-moto for these slogans printed on the walls of Jawaharlal Nehru University for “International Studies”, seeking to revenge the patriarchal society, which the upper casts like Brahmins/Baniyas: have created into the Indian Society. The Everest confidence of “WE WILL AVENGE” was certain of the animosity for what the brahmins/baniyas has done to the society. And there are few great reasons to pen these benevolences.

These casts are really into the dismantaling of Indian Society, as the true escence of “India” was disturbed by their mere presence. The core of Indian spirituality, culture, ethics and values, which is smearly growing and devoured smackingly around the world, was spread by brahmins, impacted the idea of India wrongly.

The results are immensely flawed as India can not enjoy the thrill of some “peacefull” societies enjoy, such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and many more like that. Also the way brahmin warriors like peshwas defended the barbarian Mughals in Panipat (Sadashivrao Bhau Peshwa) and to some extend captured so called ‘Delhi-Sultanate’, Bajirao Peshwa’s trail to defend us from Turkish invaders, was a great dismay for India.

The very famous chola dynasty imparted our border to south-eastern asia was also impacting the India badly. The Indian freedom fighters like Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Chandrashekhar Azad, Lok Manya Tilak, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal, were brahmins indulged in reversal of Indian freedom movement. After freedom of India man named V.P. Menon was relently working for external forces to unite India along with Sardar Patel. (T.R. Krishnaswamy Iyyer was a Tamil Brahmin by birth in Palakkad.

He was a prominent freedom fighter and a champion of the upliftment of lower caste people in society.) The Baniya community who has prevailed in wealth creation of India are self centered to open their hearts on every un-promised events, whether it be with Haldighati Yudh by funding Maharana Pratap or funding Shivaji during their slow periods.

Apart from sarcasm if Indians resumed to mock their real heroes then it would really be a down turn for the whole society. Dividing us into casts is the policy of invaders, westerners and break India forces. Brahmins(5.78%), Baniyas (5.12%: 0.4% Jains included) though in small number, do not devour reservations or strong political voices, but there may be grudge for others too.

These may lead to further fusion in heat which India is not capable of. These words on wall are the trailing aromas from sweet venoms which gave their insights in Kashmir by painting on their walls “Ralic, Saliv, Galiv”. India should harshly warn these voices.

Vulgarity of pride: Being numb to fellow Indians’ sufferings

0

I have watched the movie, The Kashmir Files. I already knew about the 1990 exodus as it was termed then, to make it palatable to ordinary Indians and I don’t like watching movies with such sad endings and therefore would have skipped watching it entirely. But one day I was listening to J. Sai Deepak’s interview to a news channel urging Indians to watch the movie once and one should not be afraid to watch a movie just because they can’t take the truth. It had an impact on me and therefore I went and watched the movie.

I don’t need to go into the merits of the movie as there are many eminent people than me, who have talked about it. The impact of the movie, has seriously made this generation of Indians understand the true nature of the beast that we are up against and the repurcussions of brushing Islamic fundentalism under the carpet.

What I would like to focus on, is the glee in certain members of the community in our country, when an Israeli Jury member at a Goa Festival chose to term the movie vulgar and filled with propaganda. One of the posts that has, to put it mildly, irritated me was by my college mate from Chennai. He clearly stated that he did not watch the full movie and thought that the acting was terrible and then heckled the movie saying how funny it was that others found it the same way posting the speech of the aforementioned Israeli gentleman.

I won’t be naming the friend of mine but I still realized that there is a serious disconnect in the South especially Tamilnadu with the way things are perceived. Tamilnadu politics has always been based on Dravidian superiority considering that both the power sharing parties are named DMK and AIADMK.

But that disconnect has translated into something more worse, when as an individual you cannot empathise with the plight of fellow Indians, who were not only forced to flee their homes but also had to suffer targeted brutalities, which included gang rape, torture and murder of people based on their religious identity by Pakistan sponsored home grown terrorists.

I may be assuming but am sure these are the same people, who literally sing praises for a movie like Schindler’s List saying how it moved them to tears but are ready to ridicule a movie of the same genre on the plight of fellow Indians and are first to applaud those whose motives are dubious at best or vile at worst. I am not one for generalisation and it would be wrong of me to assume that the entire Tamilnadu is like that.

It is in fact, a land, which has been the hub of our cultural glory. There is certainly a pride that is visible in our Sanatan Dharma in most parts of Tamilnadu amongst the people. But there is definitely an artificially created divide by erstwhile politicians for their own gain and that has now manifested into a full blown hatred towards North Indians. The fact that even educated people are falling into this trap is what frightens me most. The friend I was talking about is well educated and is very kind. And if a person like him can fall into the trap of this artificially created chasm then it is indeed very scary to imagine the actual rot that might have already spread.

I am from Andhra Pradesh. I have travelled most of our country by road and have had many memorable experiences with people from many parts of the country. I have lived as a bachelor pursuing Graduation in Chennai. I will always cherish all the years I spent in Chennai. Not everyone are the same and there have been also many disagreements with various people in my life.

Never has it instilled hatred against anyone in me. My point is one can always disagree with another person’s view and still feel empathy for them, when a tragedy befalls them. Similarly, one can have differing opinions against a man, a party or it’s ideology but if that differing opinion turns into hatred for humanity itself, that is dangerous.

What happened in Kashmir was a blot in the history of our country. The brutality that was inflicted upon fellow Indians by home grown Islamic terrorists, who massacred lakhs and forced even more to run for their lives only due to their religious belief should send a chill down the spine of every Indian irrespective of their religious or political affiliation and should be a lesson/reminder to ensure that such acts are not ever repeated in our country.

Instead here we are, gloating that some Israeli nincompoop has called out the Kashmir Files. If anything that act is vulgar. I could have immediately replied to my friend’s post and started a war of words on Social media. But I didn’t, as I was too angry at that time and had to calm down and gather my thoughts. Secondly, the best way to call out such ignoramus beings is by telling them in detail what’s flawed in their process of thinking.

Fact 1: The Kashmir Files movie is not a BJP propaganda movie but a movie about the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits in the valley by home grown Pakistan sponsored Islamic fundamentalist terrorists given legitimacy by the successive governments of the past.

Fact 2 : Each of the scenes depicted in the movie are just miniscule part of the total brutality that was heaped on Kashmiri Pandits of the valley. The scale and nature of brutality is even more gruesome and heart wrenching than what was actually shown in the movie.

Fact 3 : All the cast and crew have done a tremendous job in showcasing the dark side of our history and the result of their hardwork was shown in the appreciation and critical acclaim it received from a vast majority of audience across the globe inspite of very less publicity and very few number of theatres it was released in.

Fact 4 : And finally, all the incidents shown in the movie can be easily verified and the director of the movie made painstaking research to present the facts.

I sincerely request my friend and anyone like him, to do their own research after watching the entire movie and then comment on what is propaganda in that movie. Don’t become so numb to the sufferings of fellow Indians to the point of ridiculing their pain. That is not only inhumane but speaks volumes about the hatred that has seeped in against one’s own countrymen. I have no problem with differing political ideologies or pride in superiority of one’s culture. But when these attributes turn into absolute disdain towards the plight of others, it needs to be called out for it’s stupidity.

I hope my friend reads this article and takes down that offending post but that is just as I said a hope. I don’t have any hatred towards him nor do I carry any ill will against him but his callousness in treating the Kashmiri Pandit genocide as propaganda influenced by his political ideology without actually watching the movie is vulgar to say the least.

I sincerely hope for a day when people like them can look beyond their political ideologies and treat all Indians as brothers and sisters instead of casually making fun of the worst human tragedy in Independent India. There cannot be a compromise with someone, who cannot empathise or sympathise with the sufferings of fellow Indians. It is absolutely vile and disgusting. Jai Hind.

On the archaic salutation that caught Rahul Gandhi on the wrong foot

Current affairs serve to remind us that it would be a tall order for many of our youth to be much clued in on “English as She is Spoke”, of centuries gone.

No wonder then, that a patriotic Indian’s “I beg to remain your most obedient servant” may genuinely cause a stir in a young Indian chancing upon that archaic closing phrase.

Valedictions in English writing used to be formal and ornate – much more than we see now. The inspiration seemingly came from across the Channel. In French, ornate valedictions haven’t atrophied as much as in other linguas. The French Revolution, it seems, was ahead of its time (or, got the neck but spared the tongue?).

In modern French, “Nous vous prions d’agréer, Madame, Monsieur, nos salutations distinguées” is par for the course, wherein the humble speaker expresses hope that the Sir or Madam would be agreeable to receiving distinguished salutations.

(Reference: Calliop)

Here are further illustrations of questionable servitude. Samuel Johnson closing a letter to Lord Chesterfield in 1755:

“My Lord, Your lordship’s most humble, most obedient servant”

George Washington ends his letter to the then Earl of Buchan on 1st May 1792, thus:

“With sentiments of the truest esteem & consideration

I remain,

Your Lordship’s Most Obedient Servan⟨t⟩”

And today? We sign off with a “Yours Sincerely”, “Yours Truly”, and such. We write “Yours” rather unconsciously, not knowing that it is but an abbreviation. “Yours” stands for “Your Servant”. It used to be written with a raised “s” and has come to be abbreviated today as “yours”.

(Explained at https://www.bauer.uh.edu/parks/genealogy/parks_washington_letters.htm)

You might now opine that the matter of servitude is all perfect if the sentiment is mutual. Right; who are we to complain if Washington and the Earl are feeling cosy? However, a counter-example is what we have: in which no love was lost between Alexander Hamilton and his killer.

The Broadway musical “Hamilton” (2015) is based on the life of Alexander Hamilton, an American Revolutionary and one of USA’s Founding Fathers. Hamilton died in 1804 in a duel with one Aaron Burr, a political opponent who arranged to duel Hamilton to settle disputes in matters of reputation. In written correspondence between the two opponents, the closing lines always used to be: “I have the honor to be Your Obedient Servant”. (Hamilton let go of his chance to shoot, and was killed by
Burr).

The song from the musical includes those lines, and can be heard at:

Yours, I beg to remain. (Or Do I not ?)
