My thoughts on the encounter of Hyderabad rape accused men

0

The rape accused Mohammad Ali alias Mohammad Arif, Jollu Shiva, Jollu Naveen Kumar and Chintakunta Chenna Keshavulu were taken early in the morning to the crime scene in Hyderabad, where they had allegedly raped and burnt veteran doctor Disha in a cruel and gut wrenching manner, to recreate the sequence of events after receiving a confession from them a few days earlier.

As per police reports, the accused tried to flee the spot after stealing a police pistol and shooting a round of bullets at the police officers, who shot them in self defense resulting in the accused succumbing to injuries while being rushed to the hospital. It does not take more than two brain cells to realize that this was a fake, pre-planned encounter of the accused rapists due to the filmy nature of the incident.

The encounter specialist who conducted this fake encounter has committed similar encounters in the past, making the probability rise that this was pre-planned.

Even though this encounter received mixed reactions on the internet, some questions have to be answered.

[1] Was justice served?

-Yes, justice was indeed served in this case. No constitutional punishment would have been brutal enough to punish these animals who raped and murdered one of India’s most prestigious doctors.

[2] Is this the right way to punish the guilty?

-No, it’s not. You need to have a fair trial in order to verify whether the person is truly guilty or not. Even Ajmal Kasab, who terrorised the country in the 26/11/2008 terror attacks was given a chance to prove his innocence in court. Democracy does not run on police officers who take law in their own hands.

[3] Why is this a scary trend?

-The people who are celebrating this encounter have a valid point, since it was fairly certain that the accused had indeed done the crime. However, encounters should not be encouraged by the public, since it goes against the principles of “fair trial for all”. Those celebrating should realise that at some point, some day, one of their loved ones might be killed in a similar encounter despite being innocent, with the police officers being hailed as heroes for committing fake encounters. Democracy, along with the Indian Judicial System, relies on the principle “Innocent until proven guilty”, no matter how heinous the crime may be.

[4] What are your thoughts on this episode?

-The investigation should continue on the rape case, and it should be ascertained whether the crime was indeed done by the accused four men. If it turns out that any one of them was innocent, their family should immediately be given a compensation for their loss and the encounter specialist should be sacked. If it turns out that they indeed were guilty, then all well and done. The guilty would anyway be dead, but the controversies that are rising would be put to rest.

Why our media, cops and lawmakers don’t deserve to celebrate the Hyderabad Encounter

0

Before posting my views let me first disclose that neither I’m against encounters nor against death penalty for rapists or terrorists. I’m not a human rights activist for these people because in my view they are not Humans.

With that out of the way, I am just amazed at the reaction people have showed across social media, the reporting done by some channels where they are hailing this encounter as a Surgical Strike and the general mood of the people. It’s as if this encounter has become a panacea for all the crimes against women in our country. What we’re forgetting is that this is the same police which didn’t help the parents of the doctor when they went to seek their help on that fateful day. How can the same police be expected to deliver justice when they themselves are a part of the problem in such cases.

Without going in the merits of whether this was a fake encounter or not, I’m wary of this type of justice being delivered by the police because more often than not they’ve been proven to be utter shoddy in their investigations and incompetent in getting convictions. For example, take the case of Arushi Talwar where Noida Police botched up the case. Take the case of a student killed in a Gurgaon School where the police falsely charged the bus conductor of murder, or take the case of Kathua where the police worked with a definite malafide intent to accuse and charge some people who were not even present on the crime scene. These are just the famous cases which are reported by Media. Just imagine what happens to everyday cases that are not even reported?

Secondly let’s deal with some sections of the media hailing this as the Surgical Strike. Nothing could be further away from the truth. A Surgical Strike is first sanctioned by the Topmost levels of the Government. Plans are made. Then the best options are chosen depending upon the circumstances and only then is the strike conducted. If even one small thing can go potentially wrong, the mission can be aborted even at the last second. Comparing such a meticulously planned operation with a spur of the moment encounter is not only disrespecting our Armed Forces but also shows the immaturity and lack of knowledge of our media.

Next are the lawmakers. I was astounded to see a lot of lawmakers actually celebrating this encounter. During the debate in Parliament, some of them had even supported the lynching of the rapusts by a mob. That lawmakers were talking about taking law into your hands, that too at the highest temple of democracy was the most ironical thing I’ve witnessed in my whole life. Especially since the same lawmakers were ferociously arguing how mob lynching can’t be allowed a few months back when lynching incidents were reported in the media. This should be a wake up call to our society that not only are our media and police sensationalists & incompetent but the worst are our lawmakers who instead of making new laws and removing the ones that are being misused by rapists to go scott free are advocating people to take law in their own hands. If they can’t solve the problems faced by our society then they should just resign.

Lastly I can understand the reactions of our society to this encounter. Remember that the conviction rates for rapes in our country are abysmally low. Majority of cases are never reported. Seldom do we see a rapist actually getting convicted. Just yesterday came the news of the accused burning the victim in Unnao after the accused was granted bail. It is against this backdrop that we will have to see the anger of people and the celebrations that followed. Our society as a whole has been let down by its media, police lawmakers & judiciary. They want a silver lining among all the dark clouds. The problem is that those who have failed us are also trying to hail encounter so that they are not blamed in the process.

What we should never forget is that how we reached here in the first place? If the Police is sensitive to rape victims and tries to do proper investigation, if the media actually tries to make a difference by highlighting each and every case and not just some cases where it has hopes of high TRPs, if the lawmakers make tough laws and remove the legal loopholes in archaic laws and finally the judiciary which gets more convictions in a time bound trial, do we need ever need such encounters to feel happy that justice has been done?

When we as a country can keep Ajmal Aamir Kasab in our jails for years and kept feeding him just to show the world that we are not a banana republic and are a country where law takes its own course, why do we need encounters & mob lynching to avenge something? Will our lawmakers next allow vigilantes to roam the streets because they have failed us? We’ve seen how the Delhi Government was interested in giving financial aid and a sewing machine to a convict in Nirbhaya case and was sitting on his mercy petition for so long, then why are we not asking them any questions.

If we have to develop and prosper as a country and if we really want to become a super power then we have to make sure that the Constitution and our Laws are supreme and are applied in the same way in all cases because such encounters and cases of mob justice can be misused to settle personal scores or worse to trap someone. So as a society we should take our police, media, lawmakers and judiciary to task instead of celebrating their failures as we did today.

How our media, activists and police can play a part in reducing rapes

0

After my previous opinion piece about how we as a society are not exactly known for our maturity, one of the readers asked me to specifically post about our media, police and activists too. So here it goes.

Media: Our media and news channels in particular are running behind TRPs. After any event, you can see a ticker at the bottom or a brand new ad declaring the said channel as ‘No. 1’ with leading the TRP percentage and leading in viewership. However when it comes to incidents of rapes not one channel leads in sensitivity. In there blind race for TRPs, at worst they reveal the name of the victim or at best try to sensationalize the incident. A particular Hindi news channel is not exactly covering itself in glory by performing dramatic reenactments of these incidents. It did during the Nirbhaya Case of Delhi and the recent Disha Case of Hyderabad, even though by different anchors. However the modus operandi was same, send the female anchor to retrace the different events of that fateful night by going to the different locations, riding the same transport as the victims and even showing the same number of the perpetrators. Then there’s another channel which does ‘sting operation’ by making their female reporters stand late at night on deserted roads to prove that women are not safe. A sting operation is done to bring to light something which is hiding in plain sight, but this is not  exactly some breaking news when we have rape incidents being reported daily and almost everybody agrees that women are not safe in public areas

Furthermore, our news channels start giving impetus to a particular type of story when they want to. For 15-20 days there will be a major push to similar stories but after that regular service is resumed. It is this trend which the media needs to be wary of. Why can’t they raise an issue as important and serious as rape 365 days 24×7? Why does a case like Nirbhaya or Disha wakes up the media from its slumber, only to report about crimes for a few days, make a campaign and then back to square one ? Why can’t every rape be reported on the same level? Why is the inequality in reporting standards and airtime allocation dependant on the potential to garner TRPs alone ? The quickly the news channels start fixing these issues the better it will be for them and their reputation.

Activists: If our Media is irresponsible in its reporting, our Activists are plain prejudiced in their reaction. An activist who first needs to know the religion, caste, ideology and political affiliation of victim and perpetrator or the location of incident and the party in power before giving the reaction or even protesting is not an activist but a paid propagandist who just furthers the cause of its masters. Sadly most of the professional and part-time activists in India belong to this category. If the public pressure towards a particular is too much to ignore then they will just pay lip service. If push comes to shove, they will organise the favourite activity of their; a candle march. How much a candle march has ever helped in any case in India can be a subject of a PhD which I’m sure nobody in JNU will be willing to persue.

A true activist instead of doing knee jerk reactions in form of a candle march should actually educate the society about how to tackle this evil. They can coordinate in organising self defence classes for females. They can also work with state education boards to try to educate the teen male adolescents about how to interact with the opposite sex and what to never do. Additionally they can organise camps among the poor uneducated people living in slums so that the males living there to make them know what will happen if they do something like this and to make females aware of what to do in the unfortunate event happens in their neighborhood. Lastly they should work with the media and investigation agencies in cases where the accused is a rich person to make sure he can’t misuse his influence to be acquitted.

Police: Let me take this opportunity to first thank the honest, dedicated police officers for their service to the nation. However not all of the police officers are doing their duty as they should, particularly in incidents of rape. We’ve seen cases where the disinterest of police officers coupled with shoddy investigation has resulted in accused being acquitted or the victim being harmed more. That’s not to say that the police doesn’t want to bring these perpetrators to book. But it’s also a fact that we have a shortage of cops and as a result they are over worked. Further, they have to deal with VIP Security, Internal Security, Murders, etc so rape cases are just another type of case for them. Adding the lack of modern forensic investigating tools completes the dismal picture.

Its for the government to tackle this problem. Not only should they increase the budget and appoint more personnel to the police force, they should also take care that the percentage of women officers particularly at the junior ranks is increased. The decision of government to have a women desk at every police station is a welcome step in that direction. I would even suggest to further have at least a woman officer in every patrolling vehicle. Additionally I think its time now to have a Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) which only deals with heinous crime like rapes, murders etc and leave the rest of the policing matters to regular police. Having a dedicated agency will not only help in honing the specialization of its officers but using modern technology to solve crimes with dedicated labs and personnel will also decrease the lead time in solving of cases. Special Courts can also be formed and special prosecutors can be appointed to prevent any interference from anyone in the government who can try to influence the case.

I’m personally against the encounters like the one done today by police in Hyderabad. The police should investigate, prosecute and convict the accused by the court to bring a sanctity to the whole process. If the police itself wouldn’t follow the law how will it make ordinary citizens follow it when the police itself has no trust left in it?

I hope these and many more steps which I’ve missed and you can suggest will help in if not eradicating but at least reducing the number of incidents of rapes spreading like a wildfire which if not tackled properly and in time can even burn our society.

Politics is The Art Of The Possible, now Impossible too

So, what’s new? Shiv Sena Supremo Uddhav Thackeray, son of Balasaheb Thackeray, who gave birth to SS, has assumed office as Chief Minister of the richest State in India viz. Maharashtra. It is a coalition Government – christened as Maha Vikas Aghadi , with National Congress Party and Indian National Congress, as alliance partners. And the first Thackeray from the family to occupy this office, while Aditya Thackeray, Balasaheb grandson, became the first scion to get into electoral politics as MLA.

It is all strange. Politics is the art of the possible. ‘They’ say a week is a long time in politics. Whoever ‘they’ is. We all saw it proved when Uddhav was slated to stake claim and become a Chief Minister, midnight events made mincemeat and mockery of headlines on print media Pan India. In a veritable coup, Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in by the Governor along with Ajit Pawar as his Deputy. Fadnavis had given a letter of support to Governor claiming NCP backing of all 54 MLAs.

Of course, what else. The top court was sucked into the vortex of political thicket, and called upon to perform its constitutional duty. Typically, the apex court directed a floor test on 28th, Nov, 2019, denying the 30th Nov, deadline, generously granted by the Governor. That set the cat among the pigeons in the BJP camp. Modi-Shah combine’s Chanakya intervention was scuppered. Their midnight rush was exposed as a thoughtless and hasty master stroke of political foolhardiness not wizardry. Excuses have been proffered for their Pawar embrace and least convinced were BJP leaders themselves.

For a week, Uddhav Thackeray was stunned into silence. Everyone doubted everyone else. Stories were circulated that Sharad Pawar had sent a Trojan horse in Ajit Pawar to lead BJP up the garden path and puncture any possible claim by them to occupy moral high ground in the political stakes. Media, both print and electronic, already taken for a ride for a week, was unwilling to take a firm call. They were floating conspiracy theories galore and believing the worst about every actor in the fast paced drama enacted for public consumption.

No one wanted to rule out anything or any combination. The permutations and combinations outnumbered what mathematicians Bhaskara or Ramanujan, could conceive of. The atmosphere was totally polluted and nothing could be seen or believed, beyond one’s own self, and there was self doubt too. The political actors in our financial capital were outperforming each other, in falling over backwards, downwards, upwards and any which way wards, shaming Olympian gymnasts in contortions, twists and turns. We were left gaping in wonder, who would land with whom, when the din and dust settled.

Even after the threesome have entered into matrimony, for now, it is inherently abhorrent, considering the visceral hatred SS has for the other two alliance partners and their leaders and they had for SS’ constant embrace with BJP and Hindutva. Truth is that the secularism bogey that got these ‘characters’ together to rhyme in symphony, on at least the lead theme against BJP is buried for good. And that is good and not jarring.

It was a contrived debate of convenience. It was trumpeted, for there was no other workable glue. Now that Art.370 and Ramjanmabhoomi may no longer be on the table as ‘agendas to be’, only Uniform Civil Code remains unaccomplished. And that too is no big hassle now, considering Triple Talaq has introduced harmony or marriage equality, among all communities.

The best result that has emerged from this churning in Maharashtra is that all the political parties, across the divide, stand exposed. There is no ideological divide left for them to be distinguished from one another. Opportunism is the sole and solitary presiding deity, for all of them.

We the People vote in, our candidates. The expectation is that they may show fidelity to the expressed franchise and mandate. And Anti defection Law was expected to forcibly turn them into moral beings. Alas, you can never legislate morality. The crevices in the statute and interstices are open for exploitation and law has done no catch up, with these cunning craftsmen, who outwit the draftsmen with ease.

There is therefore nothing left for us to be surprised, least of all to be shocked. We have seen it all. Recent happenings in Tamil Nadu, in the wake of Madam Jayalalitha’s demise: Karnataka, after the 2019 Assembly elections when B.S. Yeddyurappa fell short of majority: and now Maharashtra, have immuned us all lock, stock and barrel. And Supreme Court observed on 29th Nov 2019, in the context of Maharashtra elections, “Political morality is different from Constitutional morality. Don’t get confused. Any political party is free to join any other for Government formation or for any other common purpose”. Wonderful.

Now, we know it all dear reader. The oracle from the pulpit is – “Why look for Morality in Politics?” It is not there anymore. It is not meant to be there. Constitutional morality is a different ball game. Why mix up the metaphors and make a fool of ourselves. The message is simple. Politics is Politics. Politics is for Power. In the grab for power, let neither Constitution nor morality be hurdles. They are not. They can never be. We now know for sure.

Nanabhoy Ardeshir Palkhivala worried 30 years ago, “The quality of our public life has reached its nadir. Politics has become tattered and tainted with crime. India today is a living example of the fact that cynicism corrupts and absolute cynicism corrupts absolutely. The greatest shortage in India today is of that rare commodity-character. What distresses me the most in India is the total absence of character. What disturbs me is not the corruption, the misconduct, the degradation: what distresses me is the public apathy and acceptance of them as facts of life.”

Now, the larger question. If ‘they’ are all in it together, for the ‘same’- power, then why this pretence of differences in ideology or practices, between ‘them’. Why take us for a ride? We can look elsewhere for better entertainment. Let us get real. Now, tell me who has not allied with who, at one time or other. You would struggle to isolate any.

Why not then BJP tie up with Indian National Congress and trump the rest in one fell swoop? Why not AIADMK align with DMK and swallow the opposition for good? Why not? The benefits flowing out of such a dalliance would be humongous. Not only for the parties. But for us We The People too. The ideological food fights between them on the idiot box would miraculously end and our drawing rooms will breathe the silence, it desperately seeks.

Come on, don’t tell me, it is a crazy or a ludicrous balloon to float. Really? Wait, don’t jump to hasty conclusions. You have not seen the worst from our politicians yet, afflicted by the disease of power, pelf and indulgence in corruption. In Politics, anything goes. Politics is the Art of the Possible. Nothing is impossible. And for our professional politicians, the Impossible too is eminently Possible.

From work to climate change, these are the reasons millennials are stressed!

0

“Lazy, spoiled, unmotivated, and entitled,” this is how most people describe millennials (people born between 1981-1996). When thinking of millennials, people usually think of a spoiled 20-something, scrolling through their Instagram. But that’s not always the case. In fact, millennials are extremely hard working to the point it causes them burnout (yes, that’s a thing).

So…what is this burnout?

It’s a work-related stress that leads to physical and emotional exhaustion. People who experience burn out tend to think their life isn’t in order, and they aren’t achieving enough. Experts believe that stress and depression is the underlying cause for burnout.

And that’s not the only problem they face. Here are the five factors that contribute to stress in millennials and how to tackle them:

Work:

Unlike the previous generation, finding a steady job is hard for a millennial. And the cost of living has increased considerably compared to the last generation. This results in them overworking, and most of the time, it still won’t be enough.

How to deal with it?

  1. The best way to deal with work stress is by identifying your priorities and make plans accordingly. Start by making a to-do list for the next day’s work. And if you have a big project, break it down into smaller parts and work on the difficult task at first. You will feel more relaxed after that.
  2. Personalizing your workspace can have a positive impact on your mental health. Keep pictures of your family, loved ones, or your pet, and post your favorite quote or your goal to where you can see them.

Relationship:

Of course, relationships can heal us and help us grow. But it can sometimes contribute to our stress too. Especially if you are already stressed out due to work, even small arguments and misunderstandings can affect your mood.

How to deal with it?

  1. Communication is the key. Talk to your partner and be more open about your feelings. And if there is a misunderstanding, clear it up right away.
  2. Make time for each other, no matter how busy you are. It doesn’t mean you have to go on fancy dates. Even watching your favorite show or movie together can improve your relationship.
  3. Don’t be over-possessive, and at the same time, don’t pretend like you don’t care at all. Trust in your partner and show that you care.

Social Media:

Social media is like a double-edged sword. It can help you stay connected with your family and friends, but it can also cause unwanted stress. We compare our lives to people we see in social media and end up feeling underachieved. And sometimes, social media are just a big distraction.

How to deal with it?

  1. Stop stalking that person (you know who I am talking about) it could be your Ex or someone pretty and wealthy, and just watching them will make you think, “How are they so successful? What am I doing wrong?” Then it’s time you stop following them. Each of us are climbing a different hill, so there is no point in comparing yourself with others. Just trust in your journey and keep moving forward.
  2. If you think you are spending too much time on social media, then try limiting your screentime. Make a schedule and stick to it.

Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO):

Have you ever had to work on a Saturday night? And you can’t help but think about your friends who are out there partying or hanging out, and you stress yourself by thinking about all the fun you are missing? Yeah, that’s called Fear Of Missing Out or FOMO for short, and it’s common among adults. 97% of the adults have FOMO (and the remaining 3% are lying).

How to deal with it?

  1. Know your priority. Partying with your friends can be fun, but think about what is going to help you in the long run, and prioritize that.
  2. Focus on living here in the moment, instead of thinking about the things you cannot change.

Eco-Anxiety:

What is Eco-Anxiety, you ask? “Eco-Anxiety is not an illness, but an actual response to a threat,” says Dr. Ramasubramanian. He is one of the renowned psychiatrist of South India. He is awarded with the title of “Top-Rated Psychiatrist in Madurai” by an International ranking website called, Three Best Rated®.

“From an evolutionary perspective, all living things want to give a healthy and protective environment to the next generation. But since we have failed to do it, we are filled with guilt and anxiety,” the psychiatrist explains.

How to deal with it?

  1. Personally, I have eco-anxiety too. So, I try to do things in my power to contribute to the wellness of our planet.
  2. I don’t think eco-anxiety is a bad thing. It helps us realize what we are doing wrong and push us to take a step to fix it. So, do what you can to save our planet. Every small step counts.

Bottom line:

Millennials aren’t spoiled and lazy or depressed, they just have it rough because the world is not the same as it used to be twenty years ago.

“Remember, most of your stress comes from the way you respond, not the way life is. Adjust your attitude, and all the extra stress is gone.”

Unchanged Stance; RBI Fifth Bi Monthly MPC and Outlooks

In its Fifth Bi-monthly meet for the FY2019-20, The RBI monetary policy committee, MPC decided to keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 5.15 per cent.

Consequently, the reverse repo rate under the LAF remains unchanged at 4.90 per cent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate at 5.40 per cent.  The MPC also decided to continue with the accommodative stance as long as it is necessary to revive growth, while ensuring that inflation remains within the target.

The objective of achieving the medium-term target for consumer price index (CPI) inflation of 4 per cent within a band of +/- 2 per cent, while supporting growth.

The MPC cited its various rationale both global and domestic which we will further look into, lets first see what LAF means;

LAF or liquidity adjustment facility is a tool used in monetary policy, primarily by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), that allows banks to borrow money through repurchase agreements (repos) or for banks to make loans to the RBI through reverse repo agreements.

The RBI introduced a LAF as a result of the Narasimha Committee on Banking Sector Reforms (1998). LAF’s can manage inflation by increasing and reducing money supply. LAF can be used as a tool for aiding the banks in times of both slowdown and growth as such the banks can borrow from RBI at repo rate and lend it back the excess cash through reverse repo rate.

Among the global cues that the RBI MPC has looked out for are; US and Euro GDP growth rates and the manufacturing sectors performances, US GDP picked up growth rate, the UK GDP remained stable. Japan’s economy lost momentum. The manufacturing activities in US dropped for fourth consecutive month.

Among emerging market economies (EMEs), GDP growth in China decelerated further in Q3, reflecting weak industrial production and declining exports amidst trade tensions with the US.
Other cues included crude oil prices activities and global financial markets activities.

On Domestic frontier, gross domestic product (GDP) growth moderated to 4.5 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) in Q2:2019-20, extending a sequential deceleration to the sixth consecutive quarter. Sixth quarters consecutive seems worrying but is an admittance too, unlike media houses reporting least GDP growth in SIX years or 26 Quarters.

Retail inflation, measured by y-o-y changes in the CPI, increased sharply to 4.6 percent in October, propelled by a surge in food prices. Fuel group prices remained in deflation. Food inflation spiked to 6.9 per cent in October – a 39-month high – pushed up by a sharp increase in prices of vegetables due to heavy unseasonal rains. Inflation in CPI excluding food and fuel declined further from 4.2 per cent in September to 3.4 per cent in October.

Outlooks

Overall liquidity in the system remained in surplus in October and November 2019 despite an expansion of currency in circulation due to festival demand. Average daily net absorption under the LAF amounted to 1,98,566 crore in October. Monetary transmission has been full and reasonably swift across various money market segments and the private corporate bond market. As against the cumulative reduction in the policy repo rate by 135 bps during February-October 2019, transmission to various money and corporate debt market segments ranged from 137 bps (overnight call money market) to 218 bps (3-month CPs of non-banking finance companies).

In the fourth bi-monthly resolution of October 2019, CPI inflation was projected at 3.4 per cent for Q2:2019-20, 3.5-3.7 per cent for H2:2019-20 and 3.6 per cent for Q1:2020-21 with risks evenly balanced. The actual inflation outcome for Q2 evolved broadly in line with projections – averaging 3.5 per cent. CPI inflation projection is revised upwards to 5.1-4.7 per cent for H2:2019-20 and 4.0-3.8 per cent for H1:2020-21, (H1 and H2 refer to halves of the Financial Year.)

Real GDP growth for 2019-20 is revised downwards from 6.1 per cent in the October policy to 5.0 per cent–4.9-5.5 per cent in H2 and 5.9-6.3 per cent for H1:2020-21.

All members of the MPC – Dr. Chetan Ghate, Dr. Pami Dua, Dr. Ravindra H. Dholakia, Dr. Michael Debabrata Patra, Shri Bibhu Prasad Kanungo and Shri Shaktikanta Das – voted in favour of the decision.

Author’s Note: Citing RBI’s report may get a little bit technical but the report mainly deals with repo rates, inflation and economic growth and its different drivers, which I will try to explain in further articles, to more aware readers though, please find the report link here-under (pdf document):

Fifth Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement, 2019-20 Resolution of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Reserve Bank of India

6 months of Modi 2.0

0

When people believed in Narendra Modi and gave a bigger majority, Modi knew what was lying in front of him. After swearing in on 30 may 2019 with more support, he was fast into action. On July 30 2019, one month later age old discriminatory practice of Triple Talaq was made unconstitutional and punishable offence. One week later, on August 6, article 370 was abrogated and Jammu & Kashmir was reorganized with 2/3 majority in parliament.

Both the issues were long standing, discriminating women and needed a commitment from government. Rajiv Gandhi government has nullified supreme court judgement in favor of Muslim women against talaq. Even article 370 which was temporary was given almost a permanent status by congress. PM’s appeal of not to see Ayodhya Judgment from the prism of victory or defeat had an impact on every citizen. All above issues were accepted with calm. Previous governments added communal color to the issues, but people realized the facts and maintained peace.

When Modi became PM in 2014, Indian economy was in top 5 fragile economies, later India became the fastest growing & 5th largest economy. Amid global slowdown affecting India also in 2019, Modi in 2nd term has taken revolutionary steps like decreasing corporate tax to 22-25% on par with investment friendly countries like Singapore, merging banks, removing angel tax on startups, no surcharge on foreign portfolio investments (FPIs), less interest rates, disinvestment, etc.

Results are evident with FPIs at 22700 crores in November, Sensex &NIFTY reaching life time peaks. Hundred lakh crores to be spent on infra structure like highways by NHAI (National High Way Authority of India), rural roads by PM Grameen Sadakh Yojana (PM-GSY), municipal roads by Atal Mission for Rejuvenation & Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Railways, Power projects, etc. With goal of housing for all, 1.95 crore houses to be built by 2022.

Government allotted 24,375 crores for establishing 75 government medical colleges pan India. As per supreme court orders 42000 crores loans recovered from Essar steels using Insolvency & Bankruptcy code and recovery of many such bad loans will follow soon. RBI will auction DHFL assets to recover 83000 crores.

Present government has allocated 1.78 lakh crores for agriculture & farmers welfare through PM -KISAN for 14.5 crores farmers, PM Fasal Bhima Yojana crop insurance for 5.61 crores farmers, PM-Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PM-KSY), green revolution, mechanization of farming, E- National Agricultural Market (E-NAM). Minimum Support Price has been increased to 109% by Market Intervention Scheme -Price Support Scheme (MIS-PSS). To support farmers, dairy &small traders government has taken brave decision of not joining RCEP.PM Shram Yogi Mandhan scheme (PM-SYM) provides pension to informal labor & small traders.

ESI via Atal Bimit Vyakthi Kalyan Yojana (ABVKY) will provide pension for private employees in job loss or health problems for 2 years. Government launched Jal Jeevan Mission with 3.5 lakh crores to promote water conservation, treatment, micro irrigation. Nal se Jal scheme is launched with goal of piped water supply to all. Ajit Pawar – Has he received the hug of Dritrashtra or he going to be Shalya in the alliance?

0

The great theatre artist Ajit Pawar has summarized his acting and finally got the proud and affection filled hug from the NCP supremo Sharad Pawar.  The question is whether the hug he received from his uncle was exactly the same hug of blind Dridarastra that he offered to Bhima after war or Ajith Pawar going to be the new Shalya in the alliance is matter of time to prove.

Either the prodigal son may be placated and made deputy chief minister of the state so that he is kept at arms distance or may be isolated and marginalized.

From the reports that had appeared in various new media portals suggest that Ajit Pawar is much unhappy with Shiv Sena and INC than with NCP and wants NCP to ensure rotational chief minister-ship so that Ajit Pawer too can put in his bio-data someday the former chief minister of Maharashtra once.

If Ajit Pawar is made deputy chief minister, in all probability he may act like Shalya and sure would demoralize the alliance and would expose all its contradictions because he has to capture NCP as the senior Pawar is already 79, his daughter is no match to his stature in Maharashtra.  The game is still on or not yet over.

Like how Duryodhana made Karna king, then made him the commander in chief during Mahabharat war, tricked to Shalya to be his charioteer, Sharad pawar too has made Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray the chief minister of the state, barred Ajit Pawar from demanding for rotational chief minister-ship.

Shalya was a king and brother of Pandu’s wife. Similarly Ajit Pawar is the next heir to the throne both in party as well as in government whenever NCP alliance could form government.  But when a golden opportunity that came to the lap of NCP, senior Pawar does not want Ajit Pawar to extract more juice not because Sharad Pawar does not want more juice but does not want Ajit Pawar grow big in the party and master over Sharad Pawar in deal making.

The curious part of the game is not yet over or known.

If Ajit Pawar is made as deputy chief minister to avoid some unnecessary un-rest in NCP and factionalism, certainly such an arrangement may save NCP but not the alliance. In all probability, Ajit Pawar may play the role of Shalya. If Sharad Pawar decides to protect the alliance dharma and Shiv Sena and marginalize Ajit Pawar, NCP factionalism leading to breakage of the party cannot be ruled out.  Therefore the forgiveness given to Ajit Pawar by Sharad Pawar and subsequent hug of Supriya Sule of Ajit Pawar must be also looked at from a different perspective.

Was the hug indirectly meant like that of Dritrashtra over Bhima after war?  The anger of Dritrashtra crushed a rocky status of Bhima but thanks to Lord Krishna, Bhima did not get crushed by Dritrashtra but the can Ajit Pawar escape unhurt by the politics of his uncle?

Anyway the people of Maharashtra are the one going to pay for the above experiment and people of the state must accept they were the cause for the above instability. India needs a stable, single party government and only then the decisions can be bold and development centric. If people elect coalition government, naturally such government is likely to sink in corruption and dynastic politics.

Anatomy of Shiv Sena, NCP, INC alliance – Sharad Pawar dug the graveyard of Congress party

0

From the beginning ,Sharad Pawar had repeated that he would take a stand on supporting Shiv Sena led government after due consultation with its alliance partner the congress party. Later, Sharad Pawar instead of taking action against Ajit Pawar, accused the Congress party for the decision of Ajit Pawar to split the party because the Congress party was making unreasonable demands in cabinet allocation in Maharashtra government.

In a sense, Sharad Pawar has revealed to the public something that was supposed to have been kept as secret, leaving everything to the imagination of public. But the attempt of Sharad Pawar to dry the undergarment in open nothing but a vicious act of weakening the Congress party and expose how it was in breaking its ideology for power.

The statement of Sharad Pawar clearly suggest that Congress party was not only motivated to stop BJP from coming to power but was eyeing plum portfolios in Maharashtra government. So it was not just breach of ideology but also greed and lust for power. In a sense, Pawar hyped his stature that even when an open invitation was given to him, he did not accept, but both Congress party and Shiv Sena were after power and hence breached both political ideology and mandate of people.

Although from the political per se the NCP cannot expand beyond Maharashtra which Sharad Pawar also knows, but he is trying to offer himself as a leader of change for all those lutyens and so called self-certified intellectuals. Certainly Congress party is extremely demoralized politically, more due to its ex-president-dynast Rahul Gandhi than due to any other reason.

In 2014 several allegations of corruption hit the congress party the worst and it could not face the people and hence sank politically to a bottomless pit of defeat.  In 2019 everyone hoped a better performance from the Congress party but thanks to its dynast leader and his bundle of lies and comedy show, Congress got further demoralized and marginalized politically. But Congress party hasn’t learned its lessons even from its repeated defeats. Still the party want to circle around one pariwar, sing songs and prostrate before the pariwar and wants to resurrect the party.

India is so ashamed of the Congress party for wasting nearly a whole day on the debate over SPG protection to one family. For the Congress party, not the nation but only one family matters but for BJP and Modi government, Indian and Indians are more important than any one particular family or its selfish interests.

Instead of re-building the party, Congress party has chosen a self-defeating and auto-degenerating path by joining with Shiv Sena + NCP game plan. NCP supremo has cleverly exposed both the greed and ideological breach of the congress party and how it had bargained for its support in return.

Congress party must start working against regional forces, must reinvent its ideology and must work to regain the trust of people. But what Congress party is doing today is not going to give any dividend to the congress party politically. In the name of fighting BJP, Congress party is buttressing the growth and further expansion of regional forces at own expense. Such politics can only further shrink the party and will reduce the identity of Congress party as ‘NATIONAL LEVEL REGIONAL PARTY’ where it had to beg at the door steps of several regional parties to protect its identity as regional party at the national level.

The Perils Of Multiculturalism

“Unless we learn to know ourselves, we run the danger of destroying ourselves.”

                                                                                                                            ~Ja A. Jahannes

We live in a time where the Utopian-ness of a society is measured in the scale of multiculturalism. More the multiculturalism in a society, the closer it is to the absolute Egalitarian set up. This fact has been drilled into our minds, especially in the Indian minds, that a society’s greatest jewel is its diversity, the variety of multitude living together, as one people. Nevertheless, the recent happenings around the globe are pushing us to question whether this notion of cinematic and literary grandeur holds true beyond the screens and books.

In India, this debate is not new. While some Indians always questioned the assumption, Indians were of the idea that without its diversity India is nothing. Let me also remind you, that when such people peddle this belief, diversity often equals to religious diversity, cause that makes way more political sense. The west, however, has never had such monstrous diversity of its own, so the idea of immigration was appealing to them, and so that’s how the West has become an advocate of multiculturalism itself. The recent London Bridge Attacks have left Londoners questioning whether this liberal philosophy has indeed changed the fabric of their society or not. The answer is, YES, it has, just like in any other place in this world where multiculturalism as we know today has existed. Yet, this argument has its own nuances.

My central problem with multiculturalism, though is something else. It is the way, it is projected. In India, no social science textbook is complete without mentioning India’s diversity, just so that, Indians never feel that a diverse society is a threat, rather believe that it is a boon that our country has, and is something to be proud of. According to multiculturalism, differences amongst the diverse groups should not only be recognised but also is something that should be seen as an achievement. As a result, dissenting ideas and not recognizing a certain groups’ belief system leads to famous, “Bigot Tag” being conferred upon the dissenter.

Take the example of Kamlesh Tiwari. All he dared to, was, to speak against a particular “minority community’s” belief and not only was a labelled a bigot, just for exercising his Right To Expression, but was also shot dead in daylight. Surprisingly, most people who swear by India’s diversity, did not even condemn this gruesome act. This one among the million examples, since centuries, which keeps the very strong point, that if in order to assert one’s right to expression, if he/she speaks against one group, the extremely severe cracks in the foundation of a multicultural society begin to appear. In such a society, criticism is often limited to criticising your beliefs, that too, if your ideology permits you to do that.

A multicultural society, with cultures that have nothing in common, is but a volatile poison, which may erode the very society the moment the ideal parameters are disturbed. In most cases, multicultural societies are a union of contrasting beliefs encapsulated together with intolerance for any criticism of any cult. And no doubt, such a society needs protection from intolerance since that can aggravate the loosely held societal foundations. This implicitly proves that a multicultural society may actually be very far from being Egalitarian. Such a society can never be at peace.

India’s cold past is a testimony to the above-stated arguments. In India, the Dharmic and Abrahamic belief systems are always in conflict with one another, which exposes India’s fragile society that can collapse any moment, if there is any internal or external rebellion. This problem arises because people who do not think similarly, do not believe similarly, do not live, pray, eat, dress, talk, and behave similarly are forced to do so, without any right to dissent. Dissent in most cases is reserved for a special class of people called the “Minorities”.

I do not, however, mean to imply that in generality, multiculturalism is bad, owing to the diverse meaning the word itself has. Pre Muslim India, i.e. Bharat, itself was a den of multiculturalism. Though not the way multiculturalism is deemed today, ancient Bharat was a melting point of cultures, howsoever distinct, invisibly bound together with a very strong civilizational bond. Though the people had varying specific beliefs and interests, the general picture was more or less the same. They were all adherents of Dharma. That attributed to their general identity of being a Bharatiya. The same, cannot be said for today’s India.

All in all, multiculturalism is something societies should adopt not before reading its “CAUTION” note, ticking all the boxes in the prerequisites’ checklist and ensuring cultural compatibility.

A society’s multiculturalism should not be purchased at the cost of a silent genocide or curtailment of basic human rights. Multicultural societies may sound appealing, but these are the greatest threats to persecuted societies, which should never adopt this system until the above criteria are met. It should not be applied to societies which house remnants of any ideology, as that may be the final nail in the coffin of the ailing community.

“Multicultural societies are multi conflict societies.”

~Marine Le Pen

P.S: There is nothing wrong with Indic multiculturalism, which rather than being called as a multicultural society should be called a syncretic society.
