England announce their potential squad for the West Indies series; Moeen Ali returns after a break

0

The England cricket team is now fully ready to return to the field after a long break. The England team had to return from Sri Lanka without playing due to an outbreak of the coronavirus. They are now set to host a three-match Test series against the West Indies in July. The England Cricket Board has announced a 30-man squad with the return of Moeen Ali.

A potential England squad has been announced for the three-match Test series to be played against the West Indies from 8 July. England all-rounder Moeen Ali has been included in the 30-man squad. The team will start preparations for the upcoming series against the West Indies from June 23. The first Test between the two teams will be played from July 8.

Moeen, 32, announced an indefinite break from Test cricket in September. He was not included in the central contract for the year 2019–20. Moeen played the last Test in the first Test of the Ashes series last year. The team selected for the practice camp also includes eight budding players. A practice match will be played from July 1, based on which the team will be announced for the series.

The West Indies team is in England and at the moment all the players are spending time in quarantine. 3 big players from the West Indies withdrew their names for the tour. Shimron Hetmyer, Darren Bravo and Keemo Paul refused to go on tour because of corona infection.

‘Boycott Chinese’ movement: Impulsive or justified?

0

The recent stand off between two Asian giants at the Indo China lac has left entire Asia watch with concern and at the same time wonder as to what will follow next. The incident began with a not so unusual Chinese practice of pac troops willfully entering into the Indian side of the border, invoking sharp opposition and pushback from its Indian counterparts. What ensued was a meeting between army chief of both the countries followed by a resolution that Chinese would restore the status quo prior to this incident.

However, not to anyone’s surprise Chinese reneged on their promise yet again, much to the disappointment of the Indian side. Indian troops, unaware of the premeditated plan of Chinese to attack them when they were most vulnerable, approached closer to the disputed area to see if Chinese had indeed returned to their earlier position as promised and were brutally attacked with bats embedded with iron nails. The heinous, cowardly and unpardonable ambush killed 3 soldiers on the spot while 17 others succumbed to death later due to harsh mountainous weather and lack of timely treatment.

The incident justifiably caused outrage of unprecedented scale among indian citizens resulting in an immediate response of push for a complete boycott of anything chinese. While that would be a natural response of any Indian who is aware of china’s tactics of bullying its neighbours into toeing their line and killing thousands of indian soldiers since 1962, there are a few fringe venomous groups who are ridiculing and mocking this idea of boycotting chinese products.

The apparent rationale they are putting forward is that boycotting Chinese goods is highly impractical as Chinese are dominating world trade with their cost effective and competitively priced products causing them to be in high demand across the globe and India cannot afford to exclude itself from that ecosystem.

However, the point that they absolutely miss is that China has not been an inherently strong economy. Just like India they also went through stringent economic reforms, aligning them with the global economy which kickstarted their economic dominance worldwide that still continues. Unlike India however, Chinese had started those reforms two decades prior to India which gave them a clear headstart. Also, to their credit, China marched ahead with their aggressive push to making their products highly competitive by offering steep tax benefits and other attractive freebies to the companies setting up their plants in China. In contrast, India hardly cared to bring foreign investments into its soil as it was never on top of their priority list.

Analysts and experts do believe however that all India needs to replicate the China model,
today, is a strong political leadership that can think beyond electoral benefits and start pushing initiatives like “Make in India” aggressively and persistently till it gains sufficient momentum on its own. The timing for this push has never been more favourable as big global corporations are looking for excuses to exit china and settle in other favourite destinations in light of the Covid 19 pandemic that is perceived to have been exported by China. India , fortunately and surely, happens to be one of those favourite destinations.

With India’ bilateral ties at its best with almost all the countries in the world due to continued efforts from the government in that direction in the recent years, it is reasonably certain that global community will not only appreciate India’s attempt to become a superior Asian economic superpower but will also support it in all possible ways to secure a strong future strategic relationship with it.

Hence, Indian leadership should indeed adopt and support “boycott Chinese” movement wholeheartedly and shrug off undue concerns raised by the naysayers as they are shortsighted and not well thought.

With almost all the countries looking away from China and unwilling to make any ties with it of any kind, India is best positioned to take a big leap forward and exploit the situation to turn itself from an Asian underdog to a clear frontrunner. India must grab this rare opportunity and turn this possibility into a reality. The overwhelming positive support from the public will only help the government race toward the finishing line faster than ever before.

Let us give the TN state its due where it deserves

The late People’s President, the venerable Abdul Kalam, often lamented that there were too many ‘negative stories’ on our Main Stream Media. He alluded to his visit to Tel Aviv, Israel and compared our experience, to the stories splashed across there. Kalam noted a fad for positive stories as – ‘discoveries, inventions, good Samaritan deeds and even stories that talked of State’s welfare measures to the populace’. Abdul Kalam was deeply disappointed that We The People never sought the positive.

These thoughts crossed one’s mind as one spoke to a friend who was a survivor from the ‘Covid-19 positive’ result. It was a heart warming story about him and his brother- being ‘laid out the red carpet welcome at a Quarantine Centre set up by the State of Tamil Nadu, in a College Campus and being treated like royal guests for all of 10 days.’ The survivors, who shall remain nameless, were effusive in praise for the ‘logistics and arrangements rolled out, with precise timelines for the services, and the extremely caring manner in which they were literally entertained’. The brothers felt that the very environment was so conducive that not one of the ‘128 patients’ parked in the B block, along with them, suffered any adversity and all of them walked out safe, sound and healthy.

On hearing this, one felt an obligation to share it. Open the newspaper or the social media forwards- it appears that there are no positive stories to report. All the fault lines were highlighted, commented and administrations taken to the cleaners, as if there was nothing good happening around us and it was a literal doomsday prediction.

Yes, the migrant or guest worker (to be politically correct) was a sad and sob story, which needed to be reported, as they deserved all the support. But then to black out on the good, honest, sincere work rendered by the silent Covid-19 warriors, is unfair and unjust. The warriors are not only those on the frontlines as Doctors, Nurses, paramedics, police, security forces, but includes a whole host of government officials and volunteers, who are selflessly sacrificing their personal interest, so that we may stay safe and come out of this mess. They deserve a look in too, nameless they may be.

Most importantly, to let the world know that despite the spike in numbers in Tamil Nadu and Chennai, Thiruvallur and Chingleput Districts, as the epicentre, in the face of a compulsory Lockdown for a further 12 days, the State administration was not sitting back or thrown its hands up and left it to the forces at play. No, they are on the job. Taking care of us and doing whatever they can in the difficult environment faced by us all. The least we owe is a sense of gratitude.

Ram & Shyam, as they shall be called, lost their mother in the midst of this Pandemic for reasons unrelated to the virus. It was a body blow to them both. They felt uneasy and went to Stanley Medical College Hospital, Chennai to be treated for their uneasiness. The hospital administration insisted on a Covid-19 test and found them both turning positive but totally asymptomatic. Their entire family was put on the scanner and found negative.

They were told that they may need to self quarantine themselves and a sticker was affixed outside their residence in George Town area of Chennai, a crowded area. Finding that they were a large family with no separate room available for quarantine- were offered alternatives, as available in Loyola College, Nungambakkam or D G Vaishnava College, Arumbakkam or Vellammal College of Engineering, Surapet, Chennai and several other options. They chose the last one.

They were driven down in a Mini Bus duly observing social distancing norms. They were provided a few masks and a pocket sanitiser bottle. They were checked into B Block of the Velammal College premises in a room, after temperature routine, with three beds laid down, far apart from each other. They shared the room with another inmate. As they entered the room, they each were given a new plastic bucket containing a mug, sanitiser bottle, bathing soap, toothpaste and a new toothbrush, and a fresh new hand towel (all sanitised they were told). Their identities were verified and entries made. They were told to get ready by 07.30 a.m., after a bath, in a neatly and crisply maintained facility, one for every ten inmates, with scheduled time lines. The facility was maintained in a spick and span manner and even the rooms were disinfected, twice a day and beds dusted and done every day for use.

Come 07.30 a.m. hot vegetarian tiffin with idli, dosa and idiappam with a cup of coffee were served in separate disposal cups in their rooms. They were told that service had been arranged from a prominent vegetarian hotel and it was ensured that cooking was hygienic conditions and service made to fit their ‘patient’ status. They were given homeopathic pills, by choice, and a paracetamol, just in case. Their temperatures were checked frequently, and they were requested to report any abnormality in their physical condition, whatever the time of the day- to the desks functioning 24X7.

The rooms were very airy and had electricity and well laid out ceiling fans. They were advised, “to consider themselves as guests of the State and that all they had to do was to quietly enjoy their time and be inside and not physically get close to any other inmate or outsiders. All they wanted the patients to do was to follow the discipline and they would be discharged upon lapse of 10 days and dropped where they were picked up from- safe, sound and healthy”.

Come 11.30 a.m., hot lunch with rice, sambar, rasam and a vegetable and curd were served on disposable plates, attractively packed. The food was tasty and edible, my friends said and it was as if they started to ‘enjoy the hospitality’. Come evening time- it was an English cuppa tea with a few harmless biscuits thrown in. The inmates were advised to take a walk around the compound, duly observing the social distancing protocol.

And when they were back in the room, after a stroll, they were given the option to have a bath again, and be ready by 19.30. It was again hot dinner that was served, vegetarian stuff of the healthy kind. They were tastefully made and variety was even offered, for every day of their stay there. For those who were addicted to the mobile with internet connectivity, most inmates were getting ‘too comfortable for their own liking’.

Time to leave. Quietly, my friends enquired how much they have to pay for the board and lodging and the visits by the nurses and Doctors, on a daily basis to make enquiries. They were told, “You were all guests of the State and you do not have to pay a pie”. My friends with moist eyes absentmindedly put their hands out to those officials in charge, to thank them, as they were being ushered out. They were told, “Do not forget the social distancing norms, even when you are back home. Please maintain it for a longer time and hopefully we may all, together Overcome”.

My friends were overcome with emotions and they reported that each of the 128 patients who were being driven back, in mini buses sported moist eyes at the warm hospitality, they were offered for free, by the State. Amidst all the complaints, grievances and negative stories on the States’ falling short and failing to match up, here is a positive story that Abdul Kalam would have been happy to have read.

Three Cheers to the Tamil Nadu State Government led by its Chief Minister Edapadi Palanisami, with appropriate support from the Narendra Modi administration, for standing by its People in this hour of crisis. Let us warmly applaud the Covid-19 warriors, be it at the front end or the backend, wherever they are. We Shall Surely Together Overcome.

Detailed report on Indo-China Clash on June 15th 2020

Overview: What’s going on?

India and China share a border of more than 3000 KMs. On the 5th of May, Chinese troops violated the status quo by intruding into three locations Pangong Tso Lake, Hot Springs and Galwan valley. Since then, a series of talks and tussles have taken place at the LAC.

The Chinese troops were opposed to India’s attempt to build the Darbuk Shyok- DBO road connecting Leh to Daulat Beg Oldie, where IAF operates a strategic airfield. It has been under construction for more than a decade and is close to completion and needless to say, a very important road from strategic point of view. In case, the DBO road is stopped, the IAF air-field may be isolated and vulnerable to various invasions ultimately harming the Indian soldiers stationed in Siachen, which is the tri-junction between India, China and Pakistan. The Chinese troops started building up on their side of LAC in large numbers. Indian Army initiated mirror formation (Building up in the same way as the Chinese).

Due to it’s unique location, it becomes extremely important from strategic point of view.

A series of talks: walking the talk

To ease up the tension, both countries decided to hold a series of military meetings to resolve the issue in a peaceful and civilized manner. On 2nd June, 2020 the first Major General level talks were held which ended with no conclusions. 6th of June saw the Lt. Gen Harinder Singh, GOC of 14 Corps meeting with Major General Liu Lin which too didn’t have any clear conclusions however Chinese troops did fall back into their territory in some points, they continued the buildup.

Till then, 13 meetings were held and Chinese troops were rapidly building up in Galwan valley. There were also increased Chinese airspace activites on the other side. However there was no bloodshed till 15th June,2020.

Bloody clash at Galwan: Changing a decades long paradigm

On 15th June, 2020 in a commander level talk, both Indian and Chinese sides agreed to light up the build-up. According to the understanding, China would vacate the valley first, followed by Indian troops falling back. On the eve of 15th June, a patrol party under Colonel Santosh Babu, CO 16 Bihar went to verify whether the Chinese have vacated the area. However, on finding them there the patrol party asked them to go back. However, that was the Chinese plan all along. According to the LAC protocol, the patrol parties are not permitted by any side to carry firearms to prevent fire in heat of moment. The Chinese were prepared with sharpened stones, sticks, nails and boulders. The moment, Indian troops were well within reach, they started their attack.

The patrol party quickly called for reinforcement, seeing the CO succumbing to the injury, the rest of unit leaped at the attacking Chinese. Hours of fistfight took place in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed in action. According to the sources, 43 Chinese soldiers were either injured or killed. However, China as always hides its casualties to keep its image of a strong country in the Chinese people.

Aftermath of the clashes: A wake up call to India’s China policy

The clashes are the bloodiest confrontation in Ladakh after the 1962 war, till now most violence took place in the western front but the recent incidents indicate that the Eastern front could also open up for India. India continues its stand and the road development. Also, this gives India at the same time, the freedom to operate and respond to China in ways suited to its policy not only in the LAC but also in pressure points of South China Sea and may even boost up the QUAD project. Unless a major power intervenes, we may see more such clashes at not only the LAC but also at various global platforms.

Come what may, but the message from the Indian elephant is clear that no matter what happens, India will do what suits it and not what dragon expects from it.

The nysteries of elephant-dragon dance

From past few days, the Chinese betrayal and recurring mishaps at the Galwan Valley have infuriated the entire nation. Vast multitude of people are now increasingly boycotting Chinese goods, protests are being held across the country and blood is being demanded in return for the martyrdom of our brave soldiers, which will definitely worry Beijing. I am not a defence expert, I have no experience or on-ground information, my analysis is purely based on theoretical and logical presentation of existing facts, but my focus will be on those aspects where people don’t seem to have thrown light on. It is obvious that we cannot deal with China like with Pakistan, and it’s not because I am comparing our military capabilities but because it is the last thing that we should compare, that is in case of a conventional war, which is not a possibility. However, it is important to note that over the past six decades, our objective has been to avoid conventional war or conflicts only. Unfortunately, our concern has only been border issue and maintenance of so called ‘status quo’. The fact is that, yes, India was and is at an incessant war with People’s Republic of China since 1950s and prominently since 1962.

To understand your enemy, you must have knowledge about its roots. The backbone of China’s politics is Mao Zedong’s ideology, their ‘great’ rulers, and their unfulfilled dreams. President Xi Jinping is vehemently pursuing this Chinese Superpower Dream, and his expansionist policies are his heritage. In Khundan Mullick’s meeting with the supreme leader, Mao had told him categorically that in the scenario that they form the government in India, there would be no borders between India and China. And nevertheless, it is exigent to miss his ‘Five Fingers of Tibet strategy’: “Tibet is the palm which we must occupy, then we will go after the five fingers. The first finger is Ladakh. The other four are Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim and NEFA.” Any nation that does not fall in line with its communism, is not its benefactor, and India, to them, is a slave of Western imperialist ideologies and Pakistan, is merely a Chinese pawn. Islamabad’s aggressively hostile outlook towards us, has come very handy to Beijing, to the extent that all these years, they have successfully contained our prime strategic focus within Pakistan. New Delhi has been blatantly ignoring the immense threat China poses to us.

I must not forget to mention the Chinese Bhagwad Gita, “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu, viewed as one of the greatest military strategists of all time. His book says, “Hostile armies may face each other for years, striving for victory which is decided in a single day. This being so, to remain in ignorance of the enemy’s condition simply because one grudges the outlay of a hundred ounces of silver in honours and emoluments, is the height of inhumanity”. It is he who said that all warfare is based on deception, and all wise men reading this article very well understand that war is not just about battlefields, firing of bullets and artillery. It is a combination of military, diplomacy and economics.

Conditions at Ladakh are said to be emulating those at Kargil in 1999. This year, there have been record attempts of infiltrations by terrorists ,thus keeping us engaged at the LOC. This combined with the epidemic might have allowed the Chinese to gain ground at Galwan valley. They were already irked by the revoking of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

Besides committing historical blunders for the country during the 60’s, the Nehru family continued its fallacious legacy in the 21st Century too. An MoU was signed between the Congress Party and Communist Party of China in August 2008, for exchanging high-level information and for ‘cooperation’ between them. It also provided the two parties with the ‘opportunity to consult each other on important bilateral, regional and international developments’. A similar MoU was signed between the Nepal Communist Party and CPC in 2019. These events set the tone for dragon’s entry deep into the elephant’s jungle. Albert Einstein had rightly said, “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.” Thus many times our indecisions have hit us very hard.

India’s policy towards China has been that of pure appeasement with hopes of setting right our bilateral relationship. Year by year, our bilateral trade grows, trade deficits deepen, dependency on Chinese goods increases and what do we get in return, the same amount of hostility. In February 2020, our trade deficit with China stood at $9.8 billion, annually its trade surplus is $60 billion. 18 out of 30 Indian unicorns are backed by Chinese investors. In December last year, we held a joint military exercise with the Tibet Military Command of the People’s Liberation Army. The exercise aimed at enriching both contingents from each other’s experiences in ‘counter-terrorism operations’. But, on 17th June 2020, Global Times released a video showing the Tibetan Military Command conducting military drills in wake of the ‘border issue’ with India. These are definitely not signs of growing partnership, as it had been projected. We purportedly did not allow truth to come to the table.

To counter long-term strategies of Beijing, short-term policies will not suffice. If we must truly assimilate ‘Atmanirbharta’ as a movement, Indian businesses, startups and manufacturers must be given unconditional support from the government to make them competitive at the global level and at the same time reduce data vulnerability to foreign powers, thus strengthening ourselves at the economic front. We can have investors, but at least we need a strong domestic foothold. Over the next decade, it will be essential to heavily invest in defence to bolster our military technologies and espionage systems to an indomitable level.

Also, it is extremely necessary to gather wide international media support, which hardly favours India. It is very crucial that they speak in our language. George Floyd’s death led to massive outrage and anti-racial protests across the globe. This wouldn’t have been possible without the powerful international media. If they lend their voices to not only the vile intrusion and killings in Ladakh, but also the issue of Uighur Muslims and human rights situations in China, democracy in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the global outcry against our formidable enemy would do wonders and there is no better time than this coupled with the Coronavirus outbreak.

We could provoke anti-China sentiments in Balochis, Sindhis and our people in PoK, so that they protest violently against Chinese investments and establishments in Pakistan. This would divert both the all-weather allies and engage them domestically. We could effectively use Chanakya’s policies in answer to those of Sun Tzu, by entangling hostile leaders in power play. Along with the points mentioned above, if we can destabilize the CPEC, democratize Chinese youth, or along with friendly nations, bring together countries against the BRI we could win this undeclared war.

We must now stand tall, strong, brave and confident. The People’s Republic of China only respects strength, and if we must cross the lines, without being weighed down by principles of ‘morality’, we should do it, because after all our objectives are only to sustain and protect ourselves, not to harm others.

We cannot keep politely adhering to norms if they harm our interests as this has become our greatest weakness. It’s time to act fast before they metal their unmetalled vulnerabilities, and the roads that can take us forward are covered with ineluctable snow.

The story of Lord Jagannath and Krishna’s heart

0

I have been living in Odisha for 22 years and have been a witness to Great Rath Yatra. As the supreme court cancelled the Rath Yatra 2020, the Jagannath devotee in me is sad, but I also understand that it is important for the people, looking at the prevailing situation created by the pandemic which is also reflected in the Supreme Court’s decision. While taking the decision, the apex court also said, “Lord Jagannath will not forgive us if we allow the Rath Yatra this year. Such gatherings can’t take place at the time of a pandemic”

Rath Yatra celebration takes place not just in Puri but also in every nook and corner of Odisha where even small children make tiny Raths and drag them around. Every locality in Odisha has a Jagannath Mandir and they carry out their own respective Rath Yatra.

Today, devotees around the globe are saddened by the news. But do we really know the significance of this temple and the story behind the incomplete idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Maa Shubhadra?

As the story goes, in Mahabharat, the queen Gandhari cursed Yaduvansh that they will fight amongst themselves and end up killing each other, and in the due course of time this actually happened. The grief stricken lord Krishna was sitting on a river bank when a hunter named Jara attacked him, thinking him to be a deer, and killed him.

Realising his mistake, Jara performed the last rite of Lord Krishna as per the Hindu traditions. His whole body turned into ashes except for his heart. Not knowing what to do with it, Jara threw the heart in the river. That heart is said to have reached Puri.

One night, the ruler of Puri, the King Indradyumna, saw a dream that he was walking down the beach of Puri and saw something inexplicable. He woke up from his dream and went to the beach where he found a log of wood.

When he came back to his palace, he met an 80 year old artisan, who was none other than lord Vishwakarma disguised as the artisan.

He asked the King that he wanted to make idols from that log of wood and also asked the king to provide him a chamber where he would stay and make the idols for 21 days, without food and water.
The king provided everything that artisan had asked for.

Two men guarded the door of the chamber so that the artisan was not disturbed. On 14th day, the guards informed the king that sound of hammer that used to come from the chamber had stopped. The worried queen forced the king to open the door, fearing that the artisan might have died without food and water.

Once the door was opened, the artisan got infuriated and he vanished, leaving the three idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Maa Subhadra incomplete.

The King, however, placed the statues in the temple.

It is sad that our History books don’t teach us much about Jagannath temple and how it survived wrath of Mughal rulers, multiple times.

In one such instance, Feroz shah Tuglaq Flung the idols in sea, but there are no accounts of what had happened. There are many more fascinating stories of Jagannath temple and I am hoping to write a few more articles about the temple.

Also, if you know anything about how Puri survived the attacks of Mughals, you can add it in the comments section.

A Rashtriya Panchasheel for India

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes. Those who do not read history are doomed to repeat it. Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors are destined to repeat them. – George Santayana

India’s recent history with China has been filled with the treacherous and duplicitous behavior of a country led by a homicidal blood lust addicted communist party of China bolstered by pusillanimous and fifth columnist approach of the elites in the Indian government starting from Independent India’s first government. A country decimated by the murderous Mao designed man made famine and actively stuck in the Korean peninsula ruckus – a country with hardly any air force to speak of- delivered a bloody nose to India thanks to Nehru and Krishna Menon. China’s policy towards India has never been in doubt – dispute everything – obstruct everything – and rejoice in India’s pain. India’s policy has always been to take the hits, appease the bully and lie to its own citizens. China will never let India live in peace or pursue progress. Their’s is a zero sum game designed towards obliterating India.

Now is the most propitious time to throw the old useless panchasheel into the dust bin of history and draft a new one – representing the core aspirations of Indian citizens. This panchasheel should include

  • Recognize Taiwan as an independent country and back its entry into ALL UN organizations
  • Provide Head of State protocol to his Holiness the Dalailama and full diplomatic status to his tibetan government in exile
  • Officially communicate to China that all Indian territories occupied by it from 1962 onwards in addition to the POK area it got from its islamic terrorist buddy pakistan is disputed
  • Stop servicing and repayment on all Chinese origin loans and announce them as interim financial adjustments pending presentation of final bill for damages – wuhan virus and everything else – for China inflicted pain
  • Treat china as a rogue state and an existential threat to india in word and deed

This is a defining moment for Modi’s government which has been successful in destroying decades old pakistani nuclear bluff. Time has come to invalidate chinese bluster and pompousness and this opportunity of course correction should be fully utilized. Can Mr modi rise to the occasion and knee cap the dragon and bring its to its knees?

  2. CPEC (China Pakistan Economic Corridor)
  3. Eight finger

Eight finger
