Lockdown and the plight of bonded labours

0

India by its legislation named “Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976” abolished the system bonded labour which is also known as forced labour or debt bondage way back in 1976 but it seems that the act is just a substantial piece of legislation without any ground-level implementation, which is problematic. It is 2020 now and because of COVID-19, the issue was once again in limelight. The country saw migrant workers back on roads walking miles and miles to reach their homes, while some of them were not even allowed to go back to their natives.

In Karnataka, the labours were not being allowed to go back to their home, it soon became a controversy that sparked the allegations of bonded labour which forced the government to take a U-turn. Even after the abolition of the bonded labour, According to the Ministry of Labour and Employment of the Government of India, there are over 300,000 bonded labourers in India, with a majority of them in states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Odisha and as per the current situation, the number is expected to rise further.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the true working and living conditions of the workers. This crisis does make me stop and wonder, how can this be the situation of most of the Indian workers that too even after 70 years after independence?

As most of India is still under lockdown and are seeking for a consistent supply of essential goods in the ongoing lockdown to fight COVID-19, the main question that catches importance is – what will be the conditions under which the labour force will be meeting the demand of mass production and delivery at low costs?

The national lockdown was implemented as a necessary step for slowing the rapid spread of the coronavirus. There are, however, high chances of the contagion that will surely go beyond these health-related challenges, and will raise, long-term humanitarian concerns.

There is approximately 39 crore of unorganized and migrant workers on the border or outside the socio-economic security umbrella, are they are the most vulnerable section. This makes those labours the easiest target for the well organised crime network of human trafficking. Poverty and hunger await them when they reach their villages across states. They will be forced into debt and exploitative interest rates even for their daily survival. This will prompt several decades of generational bondage and wage-less labour. Thousands and thousands of children will be enslaved. What is missing from those labourers life is a well-dignified life, which is the right of every citizen in a democratic country like ours.

Once the lockdown will be lifted and the manufacturing activity will be resumed, factory owners will start looking for different means to cover their losses by ways employing cheap labor. Rapidly Increasing, desperate and the vulnerable populations of unorganized labors, who will be in no position to negotiate their wages or their rights, will be their catch for cheap labour.

A large number of these labourers have the responsibility of children who all will be forced out of school, with the burden of sustaining their families. Thousands of children will be likely to be trafficked across the country to work in manufacturing units where they will be paid little to no wages and will possibly face physical, mental, and sexual violence. Underage girls will be married at very young and will be bought and sold into prostitution. According to government data of 2007, there are almost 30 lakh women, which includes 12 lakh girls below the age of 18 years, involved in sex work.

With COVID-19 as an excuse, several states are reducing the little security that was available to workers by eliminating and altering various laws to favor businesses. In Uttar Pradesh, 14 labour laws like the Minimum Wages Act and Industrial Disputes Act are being suspended for three years for making an effort to attract capital. The same has been done by MP and Gujarat too. The plea made by these states is that this is needed to be done for reviving economic activity. Due to these decisions, the poor working conditions of the labour will deteriorate further.

What Should Be The Preparation For Countering Bonded Labour And Trafficking:
The central and state governments are struggling to contain the health crisis and economic challenges, therefore a great amount of planning must be done in dealing with the approaching impact of the crisis, mainly in terms of providing safety to the most vulnerable groups.

  1. Continuous Assessment and review of legal framework: The government should assess the various existing criminal laws on trafficking and its potentiality to oppose the crime and meet the needs of the sufferer.
  2. Inspections of manufacturing units: The Small and medium businesses will now try and work through unregulated manufacturing units to disrupt inspection and they must be contained within the policy of accountability. The regular enforcement, implementation, and compliance of various child labour and bonded labour laws will require much-increased focus, which includes extensive search exercises of factories and other production units, for at least some years, so the use of child labourers can be prevented.
  3. Spreading awareness at source areas of trafficking: Schools, religious authorities, communities, and the local administration should recognize and control trafficking and bonded labour in villages. Regular campaigns should educate communities about the threat and methods of trafficking agents, mainly in areas such as West Bengal, Assam, Jharkhand, Bihar.
The government should immediately start registration of unorganized workers and start creating opportunities for them, so that they won’t indulge again in the activities they have been rescued from. Financial protection must be extended for the next few year, in order to keep the wolf away from their doors.
  4. Increasing budget allocation for law enforcement and rehabilitation of Bonded Labours: There is undersupply in the budget allocation to counter bonded labour and trafficking. Up to 2016, 3.13 lakh bonded labourers were rescued across the country. The rehabilitation framework for bonded labourers who were rescued was strengthened in 2016, when, central government scheme provided for compensation up to Rs 3 lakh to rehabilitated bonded labours.
From the date of the notification of the said scheme till December 2019, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, founded by Kailash Satyarthi, has rescued almost 1,550 child bonded labourers and 2,823 victims of trafficking who were children. The rehabilitation of these children required a budget minimum of Rs 100.2 crore. But, the total allocation for this scheme in the national budget is only Rs 100 crore annually. Hence, an immediate hike must happen, especially focusing on the rehabilitation of rescued bonded labourers and trafficked victims by providing them the means to restart their life again with dignity.
  5. Regulating loan and moneylending systems: The rapid increase in the power of local moneylenders in rural areas of the country to exploit the people affected by the lockdown needs to be regulated, including licensing to lend, setting lending rates, government banks providing long-term soft loans without collateral, and simple recovery processes. State governments should also actively participate in issuing immediate orders to end bonded labour.

The ongoing humanitarian crisis in the repercussions of the current global health crisis is real. Our planning and preparation in the middle of the current lockdown can save the lives of women, men, and children and can help to build a strong economic foundation for the economy of our country. The true value of human life and the effort to protect it goes way beyond this temporary period of the lockdown.

Certain traumas are beyond our imagination: Islamic practice of female genital mutilation is one of them!

2013
It was a time of distortion and disruption, it was a time of revolution and revision and it was a time of transition and transformation. The Arab Spring was at its zenith and it was a period of churn. People were still trying to make sense of what was happening, citing its reasons and causes, rationalising its aftermath, predicting future movements and extrapolating its essence.

The Arab Spring triggered the largest transformation in the Middle East and North Africa since decolonisation. It was a reaction against totalitarianism as it was against recession. It was a rebellion against social injustice as it was against human rights violations. It was a revolt against poverty and unemployment as it was against inequality and corruption. It led to the purge of dictators, oligarchs and juntas, regime changes in multiple countries and civil wars that are persevering till today.

Contemporarily, the Arab Spring is viewed with disappointment, as a false dawn that accomplished much in its short term but influenced societal collapse in the long term.

The Arab Spring was the first time, I read about Female Genital Mutilation. The naïve idealist in me was appalled by women being sexually harassed, going through virginity tests and being genitally mutilated in Egypt, a country that had displaced its dictator in the name of equality and freedom. Female Genital Mutilation affects 200 million women worldwide (30 countries) according to the UNICEF. It is a practice that has no mention in the Quran but continues to be practiced as tradition. It involves cutting off the clitoris of a woman before puberty to control her libido and inhibit the potential for promiscuity. It’s an unscientific assumption that has more to do with misoginy than fact.

2018
The #metoo movement has begun to devour India’s elites from diverse professions, but it’s also encountering an unexpected backlash. One of the primary reasons for this is while in the US, it was buttressed by evidence from intrepid investigative journalists; in India, some of the cases are classic, ‘he said-she saids’, without a shred of proof. After the first set of accusations ravaged careers, people are beginning to call out false accusations, defying the ‘believe the woman’ premise and confronting women who implicate without evidence.

After an initially ruthless impetus that dissolved organisations, disintegrated careers and annihilated businesses, the #metoo movement in India has reached a toxic stasis that is birthing a different kind of antipathy towards women. Theories are being promulgated as we speak: lack of internal criticism, illiberalism, domination by the left, hypocrisy, lack of comprehension of what constitutes harassment and what constitutes flirtation, trial by media, mob mentality and many other intriguing rationales. Regardless of the resistance, #metoo has firmly established political correctness as a value in Indian society.

The #metoo movement was the first time, I heard about Female Genital Mutilation in India. It was serendipitous, through a conversation with a Muslim friend about how patriarchal, society really is. It left me deeply disturbed. The pathos of her story left an indelible mark, emboldening me to read, research and awaken from apathy. Until then, I was comfortable in assuming, Female Genital Mutilation occurred in a world far away from mine, where society was violently patriarchal and fanatically chauvinistic. Women there were fighting to be treated as human beings, not equals.

2020
Sushant Singh Rajput’s tragic and premature death commenced a conversation about mental illness among many other motifs. Beneath the vitriol, the trolling and the blaming; parents were finally having conversations with their children about their mental health, friends were checking up on each other, siblings were being kind and looking after one another and people were raising awareness about clinical depression and dismissing the many myths related to it.

This was the first time, I heard another friend of mine talk about her anxiety and how it was partly related to female genital mutilation. She spoke about sleepless nights, nightmares and her abject failure at forgetting ‘the incident’, as she liked to call it. I couldn’t imagine her sorrow, agony or pain; I could just hear her and hope that it doesn’t happen to someone I love or cherish.

The Bohras
The Dawoodi Bohra community is a sect of Shia Islam that numbers 1 million worldwide, majority of whom reside in India. Considered to be liberal, modern, undogmatic and sophisticated, most of them practice diverse professions, a bulk of which is entrepreneurship. The Prime Minister in 2018, called them the backbone of Indian society, for their proficiency in trade. The Bohras trace their heritage to the Fatimid Caliphate (Fatima: daughter of the Prophet Muhammad) which ruled over Medina until the 11th century. The community is devoted to the office of Da’I al-Mutlaq, created by their 20th Imam as a substitute to the rank of the Imam. Today, the position is the highest authority of faith among the Bohras, an authority that is wielded with autocracy, ruthlessness and tyranny.

Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin has been the spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community since wading through a succession crisis in 2014. Following the annexation, he has delivered addresses seethed in regression, parochialism, orthodoxy and sexism. In 2016, he came out in support of continuing Female Genital Mutilation within his community and upheld the practice as something that is beneficial for the body and soul.

Questions & Answers

For the longest time, I believed Female Genital Mutilation was a practice alien to India’s culture or tradition. All of that changed after being confronted by two heartbreaking stories which unveiled Female Genital Mutilation’s abhorrent existence and the pervasive perpetuation of it in the Bohra community. (Sidenote: Female Genital Mutilation is also practiced by Suleimani Bohras, Alawi Bohras, as well as Sunni communities in Kerala).

I fail to understand how or why it still goes on in an Indian community that is proud of its sophistication, education, standard of living and financial status. In a study published in 2018, over 75% of Bohra women were subject to the cruel practice, 50% of women feel lifelong vaginal irritation and 30% have either lost vaginal sensitivity or feel discomfort while urinating. The study also mentions the risk of infection, bleeding, sexually transmitted diseases and childbirth complications. A Senegalese study showed undeniable evidence of the association of Female Genital Mutilation with mental illnesses like PTSD, anxiety and clinical depression. The UN, WHO and various transnational organisations have called the practice as inhuman and beseeched countries to ban it. It amazes me that while a famously gender unequal country like Sudan has banned it, India hasn’t yet. In fact, criminalisation in countries like Australia and America, is transforming India into a hub of ‘khatna’/ ‘khafz’, as it is called in the Bohra community.

This isn’t about faith, spirituality or religion. This is about basic human decency. This is about not physically harming a little girl. This is about not leaving her with physical and psychological trauma that is eternal. But this isn’t about all those things. This is about control. This is about domination. This is about intimidation. Anybody associated with science will tell you, it accomplishes nothing. Anybody associated with humanity will tell you, it is reprehensible. It shouldn’t be banned for being unhealthy and unscientific; it should be banned because it is sexist, evil and immoral.

While I write this, a movement is simmering inside the Bohra community. A movement driven by victims who are hopeful of having this abonimable practice banned and criminalised. Organisations like ‘WeSpeakOut’ & ‘Saahiyo’ have raised petitions in the United Nations, the Ministry of Women & Child Development as well as the Supreme Court. However, all of this has provoked a counter movement in the form of ‘Dawoodi Bohra Women for Religious Freedom’ who’ve not just justified Female Genital Mutilation but gone to battle with them in the courts.

Where Are You?
Why hasn’t an issue of this proportion garnered more attention? Why haven’t the liberal feminists deplored such an absolutely vile practice? Where are the women and where is your solidarity? Where are the people who clamoured against Sabarimala? Where are the people who post #blacklivesmatter? Where are the placards and the celebrities and the intellectuals? Where is the liberal intelligentsia that bleeds for Kashmir? Where is the dynast who spoke of women empowerment? Why hasn’t the Grand Old Party halted Mr Abhishek Manu Singhvi in defending this ugly practice at the Supreme Court?
It’s about convenience you see. Not a single word will be uttered against priests in Kerala who sexually harass, against MPs who blatantly misbehave in Parliament, against Maulas who preach dressing traditionally and against organisations that support Triple Talaaq. Women’s rights don’t exist for minorities. Misoginy is invisible when it comes from liberals. Mr Vinod Dua is still working, Mr Anu Malik is still judging and Mr Salman Khan is still making films. Don’t worry, it’s not just domestic. Do you ever wonder why there is no examination of Joe Biden, accused of sexual harassment, but unanimous disgust over Trump’s disgraceful remarks? Parity does not exist. Equal treatment is a myth.

In 2020, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya was criticised, trolled and castigated for retweeting radical Islamic-skpetic, Tareq Fateh’s tweet on Female Genital Mutilation. I guess Surya naively believed standing up against absolutely immoral acts regardless of which religion it stems from was the right thing to do. Not one single liberal feminist organisation stood up in support of him. Not one liberal media house championed his cause. Not one single intellectual wrote about it.

Imagine
Imagine a five year old girl, imagine her being taken out by her mother with the promise of ice cream, imagine her being taken to a dingy apartment where an old woman asks her mother to hold you down while she removes her underwear. Imagine the pain of a molten hot blade cutting a part of her vagina, imagine the cries for help and the Stops and the Nos, imagine begging and pleading and weeping to end it. Imagine the blood, the shame, the anguish and the mental trauma. Now imagine if that five year old girl was your daughter or your sister or your girlfriend or your wife or your mother. Imagine.

Rahul Gandhi – A rising YouTuber

There is a golden rule in marketing, ”Advertisement won’t work for a bad product.” Many a time it goes wrong, because every Salman Khan Movie is just about marketing strategy. But the golden rule seems working in case of  Rahul Gandhi. His advertiser has done too many experiment with him without desired result, still his advertiser is continuing. Yesterday, they made another experiment and people loved…. video editing. Even Camera Angle was fine but when every angle of Rahul Gandhi is so acute that any Camera-Angle will hardly work.

But by now, his advertiser should understand that any ‘packaging’ is not going to work. They tried ‘jenau-dhari’ version of him, but failed. They tried ‘Arvind-Kejriwal’ version of him, when Rahul Ji made sweeping false remark about Rafael-deal but after a point it didn’t work, especially when the Supreme Court gave verdict on it, as they say, ”once the fraud becomes work, but not always.”

They tried ‘journalist’ version on him, people found ‘comedy’ out of that. And this time, they gone on another level that some online working teacher went on crying. Dr. Mahipal Singh Rathore is a famous YouTuber who makes video on many subjects including History, Current Affairs, International Relation. So when Rahul Ji made an announcement about making video on same subjects he went on crying of the fear of losing his job.

Image may contain: text

As per his promise, Rahul Jee released a video of 3.39 minutes and in such a short video he managed to talk on multiple subjects, from China Border Conflict to Economy, to Un-Employment, to India’s relation with US, Russia, Japan and with neighboring country. Hardly anyone caver so many topic in a such a short video.

More than this, Rahul Jee’s analysis is completely different from any other analyst of the world. Pick up any analyst, he/she will told that China is doing this to manage it’s internal problem and to deflect the world from the debate that Covid-19 is a conspiracy of China, the pandemic originated there and China spread it to all over the world.

No analyst has suggested that it is downing economy and increasing unemployment in India which compelled China for igniting border dispute. Only Rahul Jee can do that, instead of this many analyst suggest that India’s building roads on border angst the China. Hope…. Analyst and International Relation expert can think from new angle after Rahul Jee released this video.

Advertiser has done a new experiment with Rahul Gnadhi. And this time, it’s about looking like a middle class angry man, who had been a victim of Indian National Congress.

If any sensible person would be advertiser of Rahul Jee, he/she would never portray him anything other than a ‘jaalidar-topi-dhari (skullcap)’. Because, he is not even Arvind Kejriwal level politician, who lead a national movement against corruption and later formed a political party and who can have various portrayal from ‘angry man’ to ‘hungry-man’ to ‘muffler-man’ to ‘jaalidaar-topidhari’ to ‘hanuman-bhakt’.

Other than this, Arvind Kejriwal has been an IIT-Student and IRS-Officer, which suggests that Arvind was fairly a good student. But Rahul Jee has evidently poor academic record.

Cambridge University confirms that Rahul Gandhi did his M.Phil ...
Rahul Gandhi’s legendary marksheet

Although he can take liberty of saying that he was a Children by then and his mother had not decided the certificate name of him, so academic performance should not matter for a children. As Cambridge University vice-chancellor had confirmed in a letter that Rahul was indeed awarded an M Phil in Development Studies in 1995 under the name of Raul Vinci.

New experiment by Raul Vinci Advertiser

Looks like Angry Young Man, who is ‘victim’ of Indian National Congress.

Why do I say him ‘victim’?

Born in fairly prosperous family, has un-intention-ed talent of stand-up comedy, was ‘forced to study’, just like every other middle class child. He can be an nonsensical comedian but situation is such that he has to become politician, again just like every other child.

Why did I say ‘forced to study’?

He got into Trinity’s, only on someone’s recommendation.. that’s fine. But after getting into, he didn’t cleared even minimum required marks in academic paper. Why would an ordinary Trinity fellow will fail in exam, if he/she really want to study.

His Intellect and His YouTube Channel

Check out his hair size just 8 days ago.

Rahul Gandhi Before 8 days.

Hair growth in 8 days

He started his YouTube Channel about 2 years ago and have 315K subscriber, but out of that only 50K viewed his last video, after 1 day of it’s release. And the most popular recent video is of condolence given to Indian Army. If he still chooses to walk other way, then it is nothing but his intellect is inversely proportional to his hair growth rate.

Perhaps doing stand-up comedy ‘intentionally’ would one of the next experiment by Raul Vinci Advertisers.

The seeds of Democracy!

0

When one tries reading and understanding an epic like Ramayana, one can easily misinterpret whether with wanton hatred towards the hero of the epic or due to sheer ineptitude. But for those, who look to gain knowledge, Ramayana is an ocean of such knowledge. One such grain of knowledge involves the incident of Lord Sri Rama sending his pregnant wife to the forest due to the charges leveled by a citizen of his Rajya. For those who choose to see the evil in it, it is their choice. But for those, who want to understand the intent behind it, this is my interpretation after much reading.

Lord Rama was a rock of Dharma and he abides by those principles till his last. But what is more inspiring is the fact that he takes into account the accusation of a common citizen’s own version of Dharma, thus sending Sita to the forests. This is where I suppose the first seeds of Democracy were sown. It is not enough that the King abides by the principles of Dharma if the citizens are unscrupulous. It takes the citizens to follow the path of Dharma to establish a just and equitable society. So in essence even Rama knew, that it takes the citizens of a nation to run it and no one man can be given the entire power.

Heir or successors may be or may not be good. But when the citizenry takes a vow to follow the path of Dharma, the establishment has no choice but to follow the same path and thus were leaders born from the citizens of a nation. This was in essence the true tenet of a Democracy and in these times there are still most of the things that I said that can be compared to whats happening today.

After 1000 years of tyranny and oppression, we fought a brutal war to secure independence and truly enter the era of democracy but old habits dont die a natural death. In essence, we entered a world of democracy from Monarchy, but the mindset took 70 years to change. The various corruption scandals, the constant communal exploitation by vested interests and the era of free schemes all resulted in the citizenry realising the need for course correction and elected not once but twice a government riding on the plank of development with convincing majority.

This is where one other part of Democracy needed to stand up and take up the mantel of a responsible opposition so that the government is held accountable. Unfortunately, we have leaders, whose sole achievement is their surname, and are now leading the opposition and trying to create chaos rather than tackle the situation in a responsible manner befitting the citizens of this great nation. Again we can learn from the Ramayana, the essence of a true democracy is critisicm but the critisicm should be balanced and logical rather than bluster and rhetoric.

I believe in our inherent nature of being democratic, the seeds of which were sown in our rendition of history. Let’s not look outside when what needs to be done can be found within our own culture. Let’s prove that we can grow as a nation with unique and diverse cultures with polar opposite opinions but with the responsibility of a mature and sane voice. Let’s make this a lesson to learn the true vibrant nature of a democracy and proceed on the path of Dharma, which believes in respecting others and their opinions without any prejudice no matter their color, caste, religion or gender.

Let me conclude by saying, for a country with such rich history and heritage it is the duty of the citizens of this country to ensure the survival of such a beautiful culture. It is time to unite in the name of that rich and vibrant culture which envisioned the essence of democracy even before the world had any idea about it. Remember when it came to voting rights after India became a free nation, all above the age of 18 were allowed to vote without any discrimination. Many foreign democracies around the world did not give the women of their country the right to vote until many years after they declared themselves democratic nations. That in essence speaks volumes about the richness of our culture. It’s time to remove the glasses of hatred and understand our history better to move forward with a clear and purposeful vision. Jai Hind.

Why Tiktok ban is much more than just an app ban

Some days back India banned 59 Chinese apps, TikTok being one of them for the reasons of national security. This had an expected effect on the public discourse as Indian mainstream and social media went berserk. Almost all political sides became bombastic about the app ban. Some calling it a masterstroke while some calling it trivial. Some cried for the ‘unemployed’ youth in India’s ‘small towns’ while some called the government out for not acting in a more stringent manner. But what is more important is that it caught the dragon’s attention.

The Chinese foreign department’s response to India’s Chinese app ban is evidence enough of the fact as it pushed back by saying that they are ‘strongly concerned by India’s actions’. Not only that but the Chinese global mouthpiece The Global Times yet again went bombastic about how India needs China in the larger scheme of things. This begs the question, why was China irked by this move? It is important to see this move in a certain context. I believe this move is a cog in the larger retaliatory strategy that India is using and probably will be using to send a very strong message to our northern neighbour.

CHINA AND THE WORLD

We have been scratching our heads to understand why is China doing this. Why is it picking fights with its neighbors all at the same time? To add my two cents to this thought I believe that barring certain short term political compulsions, this Chinese behaviour is more to do with how China looks at the world.

Most of us are familiar with China’s Middle Kingdom complex wherein it feels that it is the most superior and rightful ruler of the world. As Howard French mentions in his book, the Chinese followed a policy called as ‘barbarian management’. This was the cornerstone of ancient Chinese foreign policy. To control the barbarians, the Sage emperor punished those who came to invade and protected themselves when they left. If attracted by China’s civilization, they would be treated with courtesy.

The Chinese followed something called a tribute system where the ‘lesser people’ used to send embassies regularly to pay ritual submissions before the Chinese emperor. In return the emperor would grant trade rights and would include them in the larger civilizational fold. The sagacious Son of Heaven, the Chinese emperor was willing to intervene anywhere in the world where the Chinese hegemony was challenged.

This all came to a grinding halt when the Chinese empires started to corrode from within. The British and the French assaults proved to be the final nail in the coffin. The Chinese have been crawling their way back to dominance after the ‘century of humiliation’.

It is evident from the fact that the Chinese have always felt a moral, intellectual and civilizational superiority over the rest of the world and the thought is ingrained deep inside the minds of the Chinese people. They are are not willing to back down from thrusting this superiority down others’ throats if and when it is possible.

CHINA AND WORLD TRADE

Modern day China though is led by the axiom that was laid down by the late Deng Xiaoping- ‘Observe calmly, secure our position, cope with affairs calmly, hide our capabilities, bide our time, maintain a low profile and never claim leadership’. This motto has propelled China to become a powerhouse it is today. The world watched in awe as China became the ‘world’s factory’. It was able to achieve this by applying the Asian miracle model to the scale at which China operates. A combination of suppression of wages, high savings, massive investments in infrastructure, a weak currency and a solid industrial policy catapulted China to become the second largest economy in the world. But this is where the good things end.

The Chinese growth model essentially depends on China exporting excess production out of its country due to the massive industrial capacity it has built. Which means that relative to China the rest of the world will have to absorb all the Chinese goods increasing their trade deficits and making it depend on Chinese goods. This is precisely what happened in India when we slashed all duties on electronics imports rendering the market open for anybody who wants to sell in India. This resulted in a deluge of cheap Chinese electronics in India effectively pushing India’s trade deficit deeper into the red. China has also artificially suppressed its internal consumption of foreign goods by not opening up its markets for outside companies making trade with China a one way street.

Many experts claim that China is the future engine of growth based on the fact that it did provide a substantial help to the Asian economies post the 1997 Asian crisis. Though economic growth is achieved by creating new demand so that more and more goods and services are consumed thus providing economic opportunities to the the people who provide them. Surplus countries like China whose economy is heavily dependent on exports absorb the new demand, thus benefiting only itself.

This effectively makes the Chinese richer at the expense of the rest of the world. China engages in this blatant trade malpractice because it believes that the nations it trades with are mere vassals of the great Middle Kingdom.

TRADE AS A WEAPON

As we have seen, the Chinese growth model is dependent on other countries absorbing the cheap Chinese imports. It also implies that China in its current form is heavily dependent on external demand for it to pass on its excess capacity onto. But this model has run its course now as the US and EU the two main deficit markets which used to buy most of the Chinese exports, are starting to look inwards as the deep trade deficits are starting to hurt their respective economies. China has been using trade and industrial policy as a weapon against the whole world. Use of currency manipulation, debt trap diplomacy, dumping Chinese exports to drive the local industries down are not new to China. Of course the Chinese have not invented these techniques but they have definitely taken them to a different level. India is waking up to the fact just in time. Some of the policy decisions taken have shown a resolve that was absent during the previous administrations. Some of the decisions include,

  1. Chinese app ban
  2. Review and scrutiny of Chinese investments in India
  3. Loss of infrastructure projects for Chinese companies
  4. Reducing dependence on Chinese imports
  5. Encouraging manufacturers to set up shop in India
  6. A nation wide anti China sentiment
  7. Re-thinking of our 5G policy

And much more to come. This may not mean a lot in absolute terms but the symbolic importance is immense. It shows that India can cut off the Chinese from accessing Indian consumer markets.

WHY BAN TIKTOK?

China as a country is a two legged table. Which means that the national fabric of China is dependent on two main factors viz. A strong growing economy and nationalism. As China enters an era of long term structural adjustments, involving a long delayed departure from dependence on exports to a more sustainable approach of consumption, it is going to enter a phase of a much slower growth. Which means acts of blatant nationalism are only going to increase.

All of the above creates a context for India’s response to the naked aggression that China is making towards it. The app ban has to be seen as a step in a multi-pronged non military deterrence against China. As the world runs out of demand, India remains the only country large enough to absorb global exports. The Chinese app ban sends a message that India can easily close off potentially the future biggest consumer market to Chinese companies hurting not only their economy, but also their social fabric.

We as a country need to make exceptions like these for our own national security. We also have to observe calmly, understand the adversary, bide our time and build our capacities while we continue to do some ‘barbarian management’ for ourselves.

Violence awaits silence

Women are the queen of society. She has a bejeweled throne alongside the king. She dons as exquisite clothes as the king. She puts on as elegant crown as the king. Deep down, she feels her crown piercing her head. Her hands and legs are shackled to the throne. How would I describe this Captive, masqueraded as the Queen?

If I were a poet, I would describe women as a verse that holds the foremost purpose throughout the poetry. If I were a composer, I would describe women as a symphony that brings life to a vast emptiness. If I were a painter, I would describe women as a blend of beautiful autumnal colors that brings color to fade leaves.

If I were a patriarchal endorser, How I would describe a woman?
I would describe a woman as the embodiment of lusciousness and debt, who never billed to speak up, never stretches her hand to grab her identity, created only for her master.

Many masters across the world mastered violence successfully. They decided not to waste the time and indulged themselves in honing their violent skills. If she does decide to speak up and raise to grab her identity, master quietly ties her hand with the umbilical cord and muzzles her voice with society’s perspectives.

In this patriarchal society, domestic violence word itself never existed. They romanticize their acts against women as protecting the sanctity of society. Feminism and pro-feminism are the satanic words for a patriarchal society. They think profane talks such as women empowerment, gender equality are the main reason for global warming, melting of arctic glaciers.

Domestic violence is an insidious intricacy. We cannot discern with our senses. Though it is happening around us, We can not notice it unless what we want to do contradicts what we supposed to do. Society decides the itinerary for women. Whenever she takes a lead, society drifts their judgmental eyes over her. Society itself forms from women. Women happily split their bodies and spill blood to fuel for the humankind cycle.

Domestic violence not only indicates physical abuse, bruises, and wounds but mental scars, battering opinions, the crucifixion of freedom, and shredding identity as well. Domestic violence bolsters depriving of what she is supposed to have in her possession. She silently stands behind the door of change and fantasizes about crossing it one-day. If she tries to cross the door, the pile of egoistic patriarchal slams and society snide remarks impede her from crossing the door. Her fatigued soul collapses before doing anything for herself. Nothing hurts more than losing identity. Amidst rising patriarchy, losing identity is a trivial thing. As the master has outstripped every limit, so slaves who have already lost their identity braced themselves for losing their lives. When her eyes are filled with a flood of tears, she silently stops the flood by closing her eyes forever. She puts her love, patience, and compassion on the table in this sorcery world.she renders the world endlessly yet remains unaccompanied. Every time she hopes she will get something in return. Her weary soul feels used. A woman wakes up to hope and ends her day in distress.she has had enough in this life. The thought of reincarnation scares her. Nevertheless, what is the purpose of living a life with shackles? She would rather burn her soul in the abyss than living in the darkest dungeons of society.

Masters are neither born in a barbarian civilization nor with master genes. Masters emerged from willing slaves. Master creates rules if slave abides, Master instructs if slave obeys, Master creates a path if the slave follows. A master has never existed without a slave. Willing slaves gives form to hidden masters in every person. Never unveil your slave, once it is unveiled, many concealed masters form a new life and start pouncing on it.master-slave duo never existed in a material form. We are allowing ourselves to fill in the master-slave places.

Women are blindfolded with patriarchy and abandoned in the dark forests of society. Until unless she unveils herself and sees things with her own eyes, she will not be able to find the way out.

To the youth – Please understand the mind of an average Hindu

I have, as a convention, written articles and essays that appertain to current affairs and exhortations of ushering in an enlightenment to the Hindus. By means of this article, however, I endeavour to address those more or less my age. My insignificant written work may lead a reader to the mistaken conclusion that I was ever interested in such subjects. With the supposition that you have grown up with cricket, parties, movies and studies being the only subjects of conversation with friends and elders alike until you almost became an adult, you and I could not be different.

Do recall your school days? The most enthralling subject the likes of us dealt with in school was Science, with its lab experiments and theoretical concepts providing one with answers to many observable phenomena. To some rare prodigies in class, mathematics would have been enthralling in addition to Science, including yours truly who certainly was never a prodigy. Finally, language (English in particular) must have engendered interest only on occasion. The 2014-15 CBSE batch would well recollect excellent plays in English literature, one about Julius Caesar authored by none other than William Shakespeare.

Politics and history were to us very esoteric subjects, to be treated with contempt at school, and one can truly not blame the students for not resonating with the monotonous description of events in the textbooks. One would commit them to memory in order to metaphorically regurgitate them on the answer sheet and achieve the highest score possible.

The aforementioned status quo remains effective until one becomes an adult. The elders at home may then persuade their children to get voter identity cards and other exotic identity documents. Eventually, one is introduced to the world of politics. If by fortune one happens to be aware of that word, one would know that it pertains to governance and improving the lives of the people; or is supposed to at any rate. As and when the political landscape becomes familiar, one realizes that economic growth and policies do not resonate so much as do the primordial identities of caste and religion. It is, as a consequence, perfectly normal to feel stung; at being lied to.

Throughout childhood, you have not known of such divisions. You may have known about religions but not paid attention to them. Naturally so, for why should primordial identities bar a child from fraternizing with fellow children? A child perhaps feels the elusive notion of humanity much better than adults do. He sees not the faith to which his friends belong but the element of goodness in them to which they naturally adhere. The bedazzling smile on an innocent child’s countenance does not care for such identities as may have been bestowed upon him by society. Such having been your childhood, you now face the hideous reality of deep-rooted religious differences in the Indian society and their exploitation in the Indian political sphere.

Should such bitter reality engender a sentiment of contempt within you, it would truly be understandable. Indeed, why must religion cause differences? Are not all of us citizens of this nation? Are not all of us rightful and equal sharers of India’s millennia-old heritage? Is it not of the essence to labour for eradicating poverty and ensuring employment for all? Is it not expedient upon us to collectively endeavour to bolster India and make our ancestors proud, who once created the strongest standing nation on the planet?

These questions are natural and truly must. A patriot at heart must ponder upon such questions and pose them to politicians and society at large. It is certainly detrimental to engage in religious, ethnic, linguistic or regional altercations when so much remains to be achieved economically. Indeed, what does a penurious man care of philosophy and religion when his chief concern is sustenance at a fundamental level?

However, there is a momentous question upon which a young patriot driven by ideals fails to ponder. I use the word “young” purposefully, for a relatively older person is expected to be sagacious enough to know the answer to, as I have described it, the momentous question. That question is, “Why are today’s Hindus so angry and insistent on Hindu pride?” Is the answer so simple as the desire to establish hegemony? In the Indian context, the answer is not that simple. And in order to categorically answer the above question, an examination of history is of utmost necessity.

In my previous article, I had described the misfortunes that had historically afflicted the Hindu society, some of which continue to date albeit in a different form such as casteism. I had described the collective trauma the Hindus feel as a community much-maligned, mistreated and persecuted community. I had also described the possible steps at reconciliation that could unite the Hindu and Muslim communities.

In the contemporary era, it is common for the younger generation of Indians to be enamoured of the western lifestyle. Courtesy of globalization, the western culture is more or less familiar to many Indian youngsters. As a psychologist, or even as a general parent, one would be aware of a common complaint registered by teenagers: the absence of privacy. They then contrast it with developed nations of the west where children are given greater privacy by their parents. These notions of privacy stem from individualism, an integral component of liberalism, upon the foundations of which western society was built. Identifying with individualism, it may be difficult for the average youngster to appreciate the fact that Indian society, in contrast with the west, has historically been a community-oriented and collectivist society.

Consequently, it may also be difficult for such a youngster to appreciate that Indians in general and Hindus in particular have traditionally had a national consciousness. The nation existed not in the sense of a political nation-state but in the sense of a culturally united nation, as said by the erudite Dr. Ambedkar himself. The Hindus have been aware of their distinct identity, their heritage and their duty to protect it. Their scriptures are replete with poetic verses venerating this Land of the Seven Rivers.

Unfortunately, the average Hindu finds little presence in the academia and intelligentsia, which has ever trivialized the sufferings of the Hindus. The world knows of the injustices perpetrated upon the Jews and rightfully acknowledges them, but it knows not of the injustices perpetrated upon the Hindus. Armed with a complete lack of intellectual means to narrate the story of his civilization and experience a catharsis, a Hindu responds in the only way that remains: the way of anger. It is a reaction to the trauma of the devastation inflicted upon the Hindus for centuries. Decades of contempt from the intelligentsia and ignorance by the government has served as a propellant for suppressed emotions. This receives expression in two ways: physical violence and online harassment.

With what other rationale could the contemporary popularity and almost mainstream nature of hitherto fringe groups such as Bajrang Dal, VHP, Durga Vahini etc. be explained? To what could this popularity be attributed but to the infantine yet rising consciousness of the Hindus as a whole? The rise of the BJP and its espousal of Hindutva has only consolidated the Hindus more than ever. Nascent though the consolidation be, it has had the Hindus charged. Unfortunately, the anger concomitant with this rising consciousness may mistakenly be directed against fellow citizens who identify with Islam and Christianity. Ideally, a Hindu would like nothing better than living harmoniously with his Muslim and Christian fraternity. However, the Hindus are disillusioned when they realize that the Islamic religious clerics hold significant influence over the Muslim community, and some of them who are quite vocal tend to harbour positive sentiments for Pakistan and consider tyrants like Aurangzeb and Muhammad bin Qasim their heroes.

Such acts of anger are not to be condoned. As citizens, we must be unequivocal proponents of law and order. But I trust that the readers shall be so gracious as to consider my contention if not be ad idem with it. For after an examination of history, my contention would certainly be less preposterous than that of those who plead for mercy for avowed enemies of the State, as well as that of those who plead that the circumstances, which must have forced them to adopt the path of terrorism, be understood.

Bear that the Hindus have, notwithstanding such injustices, never demanded a separate homeland. They struggle for a more respectable position in the land that has, since the dawn of civilization, been their own. Very naturally, they do not see Hindutva any different from national pride. The solution is not to treat the Hindus with contempt and adopt a hostile disposition against them. The solution is to concur with the sentiment behind that anger. It is the expression of that anger and not the anger itself that is occasionally injudicious. Should it be channeled in the appropriate direction, it would be a very positive sentiment — a propellant providing them with energy enough to collectively march ahead on the path of prosperity.

I term this rise in consciousness a Hindu RenaissanceShould you be led to call it as such on account of reading this text, know that I cannot claim credit for it. The term, however, encases a profound meaning. It need be undertaken.

The story of the Jews is known to the world. It is of the essence that it knows the story of the Hindus as well.

India’s unruly and pompous neighbours: China & Pakistan

0

Baloch rebels warn Chinese workers to leave the CPEC project asap, else get ready for consequences meanwhile 1 engineer is already killed on project site today by Baloch rebels in an attempt to express a clear message: ‘Balochistan is not Pakistan’.

Whereas Pakistan is willingly giving up land in Balochistan area to China for CPEC which will soon turn out to be China’s strategic location and will be militarized like other zones/ports/access points; fearing suppression of Baloch movement, this warning has been issued so far by Baloch rebels.

Recent developments in the Balochistan & Af-Pak region (Durand line) adds up to the increased pressure on Pakistan’s decade long tactic of using non-state actors with jihad as a weapon to fight for the cause of Pakistan which considers itself as Riasat-E-Madina, safeguarding Islamic terrorists since decades.

China will definitely go to any stretch to crush Balochistan freedom movement in proximity with Pakistan in order to complete it’s CPEC project and get short route access to Central Asia which will also lessen China’s fear of India’s strategic control over Malacca Strait which if choked can asphyxiate China from Indo-Pacific route.

As of today, more than 10 Pakistani soldiers have been captured and killed by Afghanistan force while retaliating to the CFV by Pakistani side whereas more than 30 rangers and FC soldiers were killed by Baloch rebels this week to assert their independence which Pakistan has been suppressing since 1948.

Western border is heated for India as well because of daily CFV by Pakistan and unsuccessful attempts of infiltration. India will play a pivot role in spin-axis of Pashtun, Afghan and Baloch rebel movement against Pakistan which will mark the further fragmentation of Pakistan in many more countries like it happened in 1971.

Xi’s unsuccessful manoeuvre in Himalyan region is a lesson for Pakistan which is not taking seriously. Any attempt by Pakistan to disturb border tranquility will be thwarted with resilience and much greater resistance. After US’ press brief yesterday, a new quad – alliance is on the way to counter the expansionist ideology of Xi’s China.

Even India for the first time under the BJP government openly proclaimed that SCS is global commons and any country cannot by itself using a map of 4 centuries back can claim their individual right over it meanwhile Taiwan is on the adrenaline mode to push back Xi’s over-ambitious Dragon. Other Chinese activities include building military bases and HQs all over the world, militarizing international borders, corrupting dispute redressal mechanism, provoking and sponsoring Civil wars and proxy wars, cyberattacks, suppressing freedom voices in Hong Kong by imposing draconian National security law and disrupting peace and tranquility in other countries through backstage associative-alliance means. Corona crisis has given China the greatest possible access globally through all possible hacks.

Meanwhile entire world is at a halt, China is on a nitro booster mode taking it’s infrastructural advancement and strategic program to the next level. Nepal’s PM KP Oli unapologetically has submitted himself wholeheartedly to the China, giving away/surrendering Humla and Rusuwa district of Nepal to the Chinese trap of capturing territories by calling it disputed land and a part of early Chinese Qing dynasty.

This is an imitation of Hitler’s fascist ideology which Xi is now venturing into after coming into power in 2013. Surely, Xi is misleading himself and is living in a dream fantasy world (Mungeri Lal ke haseen sapne) where he thinks he will be able to become global dictator by extending his version of ‘great leap forward’ motto and making 21st century as Chinese century.

On the same track is Pakistan which under the garb of China thinks it will be able to bring India over the table in regards to the Kashmir issue. Both neighbouring countries, however, underestimate the power of New ‘Atmanirbhar’ Bharat, least do they know about India’s new global strategy and lest about the increased and flexible muscle power which at any given instance can fight a 2 front war and give a knee jerk to the unruly and pompous neighbors.
