“Power over People”: A tale of two democratically elected leaders

0

Should political leaders choose people’s will or power? It truly depends on their motives and how badly they want to stay in power against the will of the people. We talk about some parallels between two world leaders from the oldest and the largest democracies who chose power over people and had a very unfortunate and sad ending. One suffered a sudden “political death” in a matter of days and the other an “unnatural death,” brewing for about a decade. While the events occurred decades and oceans apart in time and distance, both are of historic proportions and unprecedented toward shunning the will of their people and damaging the respective democracies.

We first talk about the United States in 2021 with its origin when Trump was elected President in 2016. In many cultures and countries, Friday, the 13th is dreaded and considered an unlucky combination. But, going forward, Wednesday, the 13th may assume a distinction of being a sad and unprecedented day for the United States. On this day, the sitting President Trump was impeached for the second time by the House of Representatives which never happened before. A week ago, on January 6, the country had the worst nightmare- an incitement of insurrection, allegedly prompted by President Trump who chose power over accepting the people’s will. Trump refused to accept the loss of the election to Biden even after many dozens of lawsuits in various courts rejected his claim of voter fraud and rigged elections.

Trump’s four years have been uncharacteristically different than any of his predecessors his free fall occurred in a matter of hours on January 6 and ended in impeachment just a week later. While many disagreed with his policies and politics, he was everyone’s President. On the fateful January 6, he lost that stature because of his words and deeds. His political fortune ended as it had begun without any prior experience in politics and he became a name-sake President without power for the next several days. In recent history, Nixon’s Presidency may come close to being as disgraceful, but he had the wisdom to resign and move on and thus avoiding the embarrassment for himself and the country. Trump has no such wisdom or remorse for what he brought upon the country. He cares less about the deepening crisis every day he is around the White House.

India’s Indira Gandhi also became intoxicated with power over people’s will with its origin in 1971 when she was elected a Member of Parliament and later as Prime Minister. The fateful day, however, was June 12, 1975, when Allahabad High Court convicted her of electoral malpractices and debarred her from holding an elected post for six years. However, the Supreme Court on June 24, 1975, granted a conditional stay, allowed her to continue as Prime Minister but debarred from taking part in parliamentary proceedings. That did not satisfy Gandhi’s ego for political power. What transpired overnight was the most disgraceful act of persuading or twisting arms of the then President of India in having nationwide State of Emergency imposed on June 25. The political leaders and many others were rounded up nationwide and the prisons filled. India woke up under the dark and dictatorial morning of emergency which lasted for about 22 months with personal freedom curtailed for everyone.

One distinct difference between Gandhi and Trump is that the former reemerged as the Prime Minister a few years later while Trump has probably no chance of being the leader of the free world again. The speculations were ripe that Trump will be a candidate in 2024 which is now highly improbable because of the impeachment charges. It is anticipated that even if the U.S. Senate does not convict him for his high crimes outlined in the impeachment documents, the Senate may pass a bill barring Trump from holding a future Federal office. Thus, his dream for another term as President may be short-lived. On the contrary, Gandhi, the Iron Lady of India, met an extremely sad and fateful end of life when her own bodyguards assassinated her on October 31, 1984, followed by violent rioting and anarchy on India’s streets for days.

The United States is now under an extreme degree of internal threats by homegrown anarchists not only in the nation’s Capital but in all 50 States. The Capitol grounds, where the insurrection, act of domestic terrorism, violent riots, and destruction occurred on January 6, are heavily fortified, unlike ever before, for the upcoming Presidential inauguration. The mayor of Washington D.C. has promogulated a state of emergency and every State capital is on the highest state of alert. India in 1975 faced a literal shut down with streets heavily guarded by law enforcement during the state of emergency. The U.S. is facing something similar in the next several days. We hope that the days leading to the inauguration are peaceful because of the heavy presence of law enforcement everywhere but we can’t let our guards down about the potential for the violent rioters creating anarchy and unrest like India’s streets

In summary, the toxic quest for power over people by Indira Gandhi lasted from 1975 until her death in 1984 but for Trump, it barely lasted a week or so from January 6 to 13. India has already forgotten the dark days of emergency but for the United States, it will be weeks and months even after President Biden is sworn in on January 20. The U.S. is in a transition and under real threat which we have not seen since the days of civil unrest. Let us live with the hope for peaceful weeks and months ahead and all future leaders choosing the will of the “People over Power.”

2% land transport tax for crumbling road infrastructure is an outright loot

Bangalore city which is India’s fifth-largest city hosts approximately 93,000 roads in Bengaluru spanning 14,000 km. Nearly 32% of the roads i.e. 30,240 roads spanning 4,571.9km are pockmarked with craters making the daily commute a nightmare. As per a survey conducted by a civic body, there are still 15,000 potholes in Bengaluru. Bengaluru’s fame as an IT capital, garden city, pensioner’s paradise is now being overshadowed by the overwhelming number of killer potholes. Both the 1.3 crore city dwellers and the visitors now seem to have accepted this nightmarish civic apathy as the inevitable price of development.

According to BBMP, 1344.8 km of arterial and non-arterial roads covering 480 major roads come under its jurisdiction. According to one of the studies conducted by Bengaluru Traffic Police, Cubbon Park, Ulsoor, High Grounds, Ashoknagar, Wilson Garden, Shivajinagar, Kadugondana Halli, Corporation Circle, Jeevan Bhima Nagar, Adugodi, Electronic City, HSR Layout, Old Airport Road, Hulimavu, Hebbal, RT Nagar, Yelahanka, Chikkajala, Malleshwaram, RMV extension, Malleswaram, Rajajinagar, Yeshwanthpur, Peenya, Jalahalli, Upparpet, Chikpet, Vijaynagar, Magadi Road, Kamakshipalya, Byatarayanapura, City Market, Kengeri, VV Puram, Basavanagudi and Kumara Swamy Layout are some of the prominent areas with perilous potholes.

This proliferation of potholes wrecks havoc on 8.25 million vehicles plying on these roads. On top of the existing city’s poor infrastructure are inordinately dug up roads for laying cables, pipelines, etc by bodies like BWSSB, KPTCL, BESCOM, GAIL, METRO, etc which add to significant traffic woes. Bangaluru Metro which currently covers only 42 km has lacerated high-density prime roads such as Magadi Road, Tumakuru Road, Uttarahalli Main Road, Banaswadi Main Road, Old Madras Road, Varthur Main Road, Outer Ring Road, Sarjapura Road, and parts of Bannerghatta Road, Mysuru Road, Kanakapura Road, and Graphite India Road. While these major roads are crying for immediate attention, the smaller non-arterial roads are also in wretched conditions that are in dire need of restoration.

Bangalore roads are pockmarked with 15,000 wheel-crunching, spine-snapping, bowl-shaped dips, and depressions, and if you drive over them, you hear your axels grumping. For most people, potholes are banal, but for a few, they turn out to be catastrophic. Commuting daily on these deplorable roads is a daunting task. Commuters have become extremely anguished since they have noticed the roads going from bad to worse in no time and there is no one to hear their woes. The roads are cratered to such an extent that even the latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which has magic body control (a system that adjusts the suspension to give a fantastic ride quality with minimal bumps) would get confused.

Bad roads contribute significantly to slower traffic and hit the economy badly. There is a cost associated with slow-moving traffic that leads to the loss of productive hours. Bangalore has the unique distinction of being the world’s most congested city with commuters spending an average of 71 percent extra travel time due to horrendous traffic and bad roads. Nearly 5.73 million two-wheelers, 1.84 million light motor vehicles, 2 lakh autorickshaws, 1.24 lakh heavy transport vehicles adding to a total of staggering 8.25 million vehicles ride on these cratered roads, guzzling more fuel. According to the Bangalore Traffic Police, there is one vehicle for every two people on the roads of the city. This colossal increase in vehicular traffic within the limited periphery of the city adds to the heavy burden on roads. Roads are not getting widened and robust with the increase in vehicular density. According to the data by Karnataka’s directorate of census operations, the population density in Bangalore has risen 47 percent in the past decade. Bangalore has witnessed a growth of more than 6% year-over-year during the last 2 decades and is still growing at an even faster rate but its road infrastructure has failed to take that proportionate load.

Government gleans a colossal amount per year from road tax but does not ring-fence the same for road repair. Potholes, though are a scourge for all road users but for contractors they are essentially cash cows waiting to be milked. The apathetic public takes only a passing interest without bothering to slay this urban bugbear for good. Road contractors compromise on the quality of roads in search of the holy grail of ever more profitability and affordability. Their relationship with elected representatives ensures impunity while they continue to work on a constant stream of temporary fixes. This make-do-and-mend approach of contractors endangers cyclists and motorists as they risk serious injuries, face financial loss, and be blighted by traffic jams and accidents.

One wonders why the repairs can’t be carried out with materials that are at least as strong as steel. Obviously cutting corners is an issue here, but it’s a false economy all around. Even before you consider the immeasurable cost of a life that could be lost/saved. While considering potholes, we are ignoring severe “fretting” of the road surface. Meaning that the uppermost layer of the road has simply been eroded away by traffic. The local governments have bid to give contracts to construction companies, who underbid heavily to win the contract. Contractors constructing the road indulge in heavy cost-cutting. They use low-quality materials which lead to roads cracking up in quick time.

Let us assume that an average commuter encounters a minimum of 10 potholes each day, and each pothole adds a delay of 1 second. Let’s assume that 2 million (1/4th of vehicle population in Bangalore)vehicles are on road each day, and each vehicle carries two people. A quick back of the envelope calculation tells us that roughly 11000 productive person-hours are lost each day. Even with the minimum wage of Rs. 178 per day, this amounts to a loss of Rs. 19 lakh every day. According to a conservative estimate, Bangalore is home to about 15,000 unattended potholes with varying degrees of hazard associated with them. Let’s assume the cost to repair 1 pothole is Rs. 2000. The cost to repair 15,000 potholes is 3 crores which is not much compared to the money spent towards extra petrol for slow-moving traffic, or of wear and tear of vehicles, loss of productive hours, and above all of the accidents which these potholes inevitably cause. Citizens should relentlessly question the lackluster attitude of the people’s representatives in this matter.

Honorable Karnataka High Court had ruled that bad conditions of roads violate the fundamental rights of citizens. It also ordered that said that if citizens suffer any injury or loss of life, they can seek compensation from the BBMP. According to Section 58 of the Karnataka Municipality Act, maintenance of public streets, stormwater drains, etc, is the statutory and constitutional duty of the civic body. Citizens have the right to file a complaint against the BBMP authorities under Section 304 of IPC for having left the road in a bad condition and causing injury or death. Section 304A says that whoever causes the death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both. In spite of all these legal empowerments, the question is – Who will bell the cat?

This pothole issue will be resolved when it is elevated from petty gripe to general-election battleground issue.

Only vaccine is not enough

0

Yesterday, India launched the countrywide COVID-19 vaccination drive.

How long will the immunity conferred by the COVID-19 vaccine last? Will the immune response be strong in all persons who receive it? These are frequently asked questions, as vaccines are rolled out in India. The answers provided, be they six months or two years, assume that the strength and duration of the vaccine response are entirely dependent on the vaccine, without taking into account the age, nutritional status or pre-existing health conditions in the person receiving the vaccine.

Ignoring nutrition as an important influencer of both natural or innate immunity and acquired or adaptive immunity developed in response to infection or a vaccine, has consequences. It does not usually influence the decision to immunise but ignoring this aspect leads to neglect of nutrition in both public health policy and clinical practice.

A vaccine only provides the antigenic stimulus for the body to react. How capably the body reacts is considerably influenced by the nutritional status and will vary among individuals. Different facets of nutrition influence this response. The diet may be deficient in vital nutrients needed for a robust immune response. It may have elements that stoke high levels of inflammation in the body, consuming the building blocks of immunity which could be better utilised for the adaptive response to the vaccine. These effects are very likely if the diet has a high content of ultra-processed foods. The diet may also adversely affect the composition of our gut microbiome which, with its trillions of bacteria, is turning out to be an important influencer of our immunity. The healthy microbiome thrives on plant sourced soluble fibre in the diet and is destabilised by excessive sugar, trans fats, red and processed meats, alcohol and tobacco.

Studies on the immune response to several vaccines, ranging from polio and cholera to rotavirus, have revealed that deficiencies of several key nutrients adversely affect the strength of the immune response. Dietary protein deficiency is an obvious culprit, as antibodies are proteins too. Zinc and selenium are important minerals that have been shown to potentiate vaccine efficacy, apart from enhancing natural (innate) immunity. Vitamin E, too, has been proposed as a nutrient that enhances the immune response to a vaccine.

It is not just the antibody levels that are influenced by nutrition. The more durable component of the body’s immune response, cellular immunity, is affected by nutrition. In 2006, Japanese researchers reported that mice fed a diet with 5 per cent casein (milk protein) had lower T cell counts than mice fed 20 per cent milk protein. Production of interleukin-2, an important component of the chemical ammunition in the body’s response, was lower among the CD4+ T cells in the low protein diet group. The researchers concluded that “in addition to development of an effective DNA vaccine, the management of the nutritional state is important for the prevention of infectious disease by DNA vaccination.”

A double blind, placebo controlled clinical trial in France revealed that elderly persons living in a care home developed more antibodies and fewer respiratory infections, when compared to a similar group that did not receive these supplements. The immune system needs these two minerals for a strong response against viral infections. That is true for both natural immunity and for the immune response to an administered vaccine.

It is not necessary to supplement these nutrients along with the administration of the vaccine. That would not be possible in a mass immunisation programme, though nutrition counselling may be provided along with the vaccination during the post-injection observation period. What is needed is a reconsideration of policies that influence our agricultural priorities and shape our food systems. Enabling people to consume healthy diets will boost natural immunity that can fight off microbial infection and also to build a robust immune response when stimulated by a vaccine.

Are our agriculture and food systems presently configured to do that? Sadly not. We are presently offering cereals stripped of fibre and ultra-processed foods without adequate and affordable supply of pulses, millets, fruit, vegetables, nuts and fish which can provide us much needed proteins, vitamins, minerals and fibre. Even eggs are being removed from school mid-day meal menus in some states, despite their being power packed with the nutrients needed for immunity.

The impact of climate change also needs to be considered as we examine the future of food systems and nutrition in our country. A study from Columbia University (Data Science Institute, 2018) estimates the impact that climate change would have on India, by 2050. The nutrient quality of staples would decrease, according to the study. It projects that global warming would result in 49.6 million new zinc deficient persons, 38.2 million new protein deficient persons, apart from 106.1 million children and 396 million women who would be iron deficient. It concludes that diversifying crop production, replacing some part of rice cultivation with millets and sorghum, would make India’s food supply more nutritious, while reducing irrigation demand, energy use and greenhouse gas emission. “Such diversification of crops would also enhance India’s climate resilience without reducing calorie production or requiring more land”, the study concludes.

Even as we prepare to immunise our many millions, the big challenge of public health nutrition remains the production of easily available and affordable food sources which enable people to consume balanced diets which are physiologically suited to growth and good health across a long life course. These diets should also be predominantly plant-based, making them both nutritionally appropriate and ecologically sustainable. Ultra-processed foods should be regulated and taxed to decrease their production, promotion and consumption. These steps are not only good for human nutrition but also for reducing the risk of zoonotic infections by maintaining an ecological balance. The bonus is a benefit in slowing down climate change. Our protection does not lie only at the tip of a needle that injects the vaccine but even more so in the policies that determine what fills our plate when we eat.

From green revolution to operation blue star to Udta Punjab to operation green star: An intriguing destiny of Punjab

0

First of all, whatever is going on at the Delhi border, let us not call that charade as Farmer’s protest. The majority of farmers in India and are not protesting. Only a handful of sponsored farmers, misguided by vested interest farmer unions, mainly from Punjab and surrounding areas, are protesting for no genuine reason, with a hidden agenda, and are disrupting and threatening our peaceful way of life.

Genuine farmers are happy and blessed with the recent farm laws, for they usher in long-awaited choice and empowerment in farmers’ lives. I come from a farming family, have spent adequate time on farm fields, sell agricultural produce in Mandis. I have a better first-hand understanding of farmers’ current fate and have had in-depth discussions with various real fellow farmers and other stakeholders. I can say with certainty that the new Farm laws are worth trying, and the current ongoing charade around Delhi in the name of Farmers and Farmer Protests is diabolical. It is a mere waste of our nation’s time and resources and must be put an end to it immediately.

Surprisingly, Media folks could not coin a new and apt word for these protesting goons instead of calling them Farmers and their obstructionism as Farmer’s Protest. Those protesting folks do not represent all Farmers or at least the majority of Farmers in India, and in fact, they are anti-farmers. We have seen similar violent protests and illegal blockades, causing inconvenience to the surrounding residents after passing the CAA bill, which only promises to give the oppressed a decent life. But still, protests and loss of life happened.

We must never allow our country to be held hostage for ransom by such goons at gunpoint with a single demand to repeal the farm laws. The protesting fake farmers and goons are intolerant and are envious that the new farm laws bring better prospects and prosperity to the real farmers. It is dreadful as to how our nation has become so undemocratic while tolerating the fraud these intolerant gangs have been perpetrating on the Indian public and our democratic institutions.

The state of Punjab has once championed India’s Green Revolution and has earned a unique distinction of becoming the “Breadbasket of India”. Punjabi farmers have embraced the change proposed to adopt modern methods and technology by leveraging agricultural research and technology to increase agricultural productivity. The Panjab state has eventually become prosperous and our nation’s pride with its impressive per-capita agricultural production, tractors, and other machinery. Punjabis have further gone on to contribute greatly to other nation-building activities like serving the armed forces in great numbers.

But Sadly, the Punjab, which was once innovative and open to change, has become adamant and misguided at times. In Punjab, we all have seen how our nation had to endure the pain of Operation Blue Star and the despair from indiscriminate abuse of alcohol, opioid, cannabis, etc in recent times.  Such unfortunate events have happened, especially when imposters and pseudo leaders are given the main say and undue platform for misguiding people.

Such pseudo leaders and imposters wearing farmer’s masks have infiltrated Farmer Unions and are now misguiding the minority of Punjab farmers to protest. The opposition has also become complicit in the grander scheme of vested interest groups for derailing India from growth and prosperity tracks. The Parliament passed the Farm laws, and it is the law of the land, and the Parliament alone can legislate laws that reflect the will of the majority of people. No other power can usurp this legislative power from the Parliament. Judiciary can also only weigh in if the laws are unconstitutional.

But for those peaceful majority of us who believe in a government of laws, not of the mob, the minority’s my way or the highway kind of approach to farm laws passed by the Parliament is deeply disturbing and disheartening. The radical fringe from the minority and fake farmers posing as real farmers and a handful of vested interest farmers unions have been monopolizing the democratic right to protest. They are intimidating to close the debate by enacting their own vision of farmers’ welfare and democratic rights. They are stealing the prosperous future from those real and vulnerable farmers from all over the country. Their unchecked monopoly to protest will indeed cast a dark cloud not only over the Indian agricultural economy but also on Indian democracy as well.

It is good that Judiciary had played a pivotal role in settling a very long-standing real dispute and resolving deadlocks like it is the case of the Ayodhya dispute through a committee. There were many parties to that dispute, and the government was also one of the parties with the primary concern of maintaining law and order and upholding religious liberties. Hence constituting a negotiating & consultative committee was valid and justified. But the Supreme Court’s recent proclivities to mechanically form the consultative committee and to brazenly stay the current farm laws without any intermediate prima facie evidence of constitutional invalidity, or a rational basis, or scrutiny of violation of fundamental rights is just naked and gratuitous appeasement of the mob.

As for the due process is concerned, in the absence of a constitutional restriction or perceivable constitutional violation, the executive is free to implement whatever policy that may reasonably be deemed to promote public welfare, and the government has the right and responsibility to enforce that policy by legislation passed to its purpose. The Farm Laws are in black and white, and there is no question of constitutional invalidity or violation of fundamental rights. It is an open and shut case that the fringe protesters are not in a mood to adhere to our democratic and constitutional norms. The fringe group is purely driving protests and unrest based on the sentiments and fancies of the few miscreants and are preying on the innocence of ill-informed famers.

Leaving aside the constitution of a committee, the indiscriminate staying of laws to appease the mob without a legitimate basis would violate the principle of parliamentary supremacy and is blatant adulteration of the legislature and the executive by the Judiciary. In the recent past, the Supreme Court had already been concerned about some judges’ widespread tendency not to exercise restraint and instead make laws and exercise functions belonging to the executive. Of all the three organs of the state, it was only the Judiciary which can define the limits of all three. This great power must therefore be exercised by the Judiciary with the utmost humility and self-restraint.

The agitating mob that cannot properly list or represent their demands and concerns with consistency to either the government or to the Supreme Court has won the day with the stay. The Supreme Court has set a dicey precedent that parliamentary supremacy can be challenged and an unruly mob can stall democratic processes. So going forward, the passage of all new laws by the Parliament will automatically follow protests, constitution of consultative committees after laws are passed, policy discussion in courts and the laws can be stayed. The questions on policy matters can now be discussed and shaped as a prerogative of the Judiciary and unruly mob outside the Parliament.

If a fringe of farmers from Punjab or any other state does not like the Farm laws, they cannot disrupt the peaceful and lawful pursuit of the prosperity of the majority. The fringe cannot hold the whole of India and the future of millions of farmers to ransom. If the fringe is unhappy with the laws, they need to convince the rest of India with peaceful protests without causing an inconvenience and obstructionism, win hearts of fellow Indians, contest elections on their agenda, come to the power and then only can they have all the liberty to change the laws or completely repeal the laws as per their wishes and mandate. But in no case, under no circumstance, can they take the whole of India as a hostage to their skewed worldview. Their illicit mockery of our pursuit of prosperity, democratic values, and institutions must be crushed with an iron fist with another Operation Green Star if so warranted.

Whatever may be the costs, the long standing national tragedy of Indian farmers must be overturned and Indian government must be unwavering in fully implementing the new Farm laws and the Supreme Court must look into the mirror before staying the legitimate laws for appeasement. If so required, the Supreme Court and the government must provide an option to the protesting farmers to stick to old farming/ agricultural regime if they so wish to dwell in the caves and bondages of Dalaals and commission agents, but should never stay the laws and break the backbone and hopes of the real Farmers who wish to prosper with the new Farm laws. The educated from Punjab must instill some sense and hope to the stirring farmers. The Supreme Court Stay is unacceptable, must be lifted immediately and the government must proceed to full implementation of the new Farm Laws.

Short-sighted cheap politics, Mr. Joe Biden

What have been going on in world’s oldest as well as in largest but successful democracies which are looked upon by young and small democracies for ideological mentoring and moral supports? The two are also considered role models for many. They two are providing democratic structural designs as one of them has successful Presidential form of government with system of direct election while other one follows Parliamentary form through the-first-past-the-post election. And while economically former is a developed country, later one is developing after long spell of under-developed struggle.

On December 09, 2006, the London School of Economics alumni and so far considered the most educated politician India’s former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh while addressing 52nd National Development Council, made a statement, and I quote, “The plans for minorities, particularly Muslims, must have the ‘first claim’ on resources so that benefits of development reach them equitably”. While elaborating further, he added, “We will have to devise innovative plans to ensure that minorities, particularly the Muslim minority, are empowered to share equitably the fruits of development. These must have the first claim on resources.” He said this as if there was/is equitable distribution of national resources among all religious communities in India.

Similarly, on January 11, 2021, the US President-elect, Mr. Joe Biden made a statement, and I quote, “Our priority will be Black, Latino, Asian, and Native American owned small businesses, women-owned businesses, and finally having equal access to resources needed to reopen and rebuild.” This is in contrast to what he said on October 15, 2020 while campaigning to occupy world’s most powerful mansion The White House, and I quote, “If I am elected President, you will not hear me race-baiting, you will not hear me dividing – you will hear me trying to unify.”

Instead, I humbly suggest both could have said, “My government’s economic development resource allocation priorities are for poor, and so far socio-eco-educationally deprived.” This covers minorities and those who are poor and deprived among majority, may be they are less in percentage to their community’s population in compare to minorities in India, and in case of the US’s Black, Latino, Asian, and Native American. This kind of statement only a statesman could think, could design and could say, surely not a short-sighted politician engaged in coming to power and retain the same comes what way.

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s questionable administrative statement or omission and commission were not surprise in view of his political background and circumstances in which he was delivering his so-called PM assignments for full two long-terms that is for ten years. Many alleged that he was just delivering what were asked to him to do. He wasn’t a politician, wasn’t elected ever, and mostly importantly, he wasn’t capable of getting votes for his party. Literally, he was an accidental PM, a step-gap arrangement till the dynasty owned Congress party crown prince is ready to take over the nation’s fate. But, yes, his leading the government was not constitutional blasphemy in India though democratically blasphemous in the realm of democracy. In the age of institutionalization of dynasty rule, who does care for democratic blasphemy?

Dr. Singh was a master in remaining in power despite criticism from none other than his peer Professor Dr. I G Patel, formerly Director in LSE, who did not hesitate to say, “Dr. M. M. Singh is politically shrewd,” and suggested to all, who politically concerned with him, “And do not underestimate his savviness on the political front.” And despite his ordinance to protect convicted lawmakers -ostensively Congress ally and fodder scam convict Lalu Prasad Yadav- was tore and thrown to dustbin by Congress crown prince Rahul Gandhi saying, and I quote, “I tell you what my opinion on the Ordinance is: That it is complete nonsense. It should be torn up and thrown away. That’s my opinion,” and that too when PM Dr. Singh was meeting foreign head of government in the US.

Also Donald Trump was not a politician, a business man who exploited the US’s constitutional weakness to enter politics with strength of money, and got him elected in 2016 harnessing votes of economically weaker section in the majority community and fueling racial divide. His whimsical and unpredictable style of governance and later adoring the hat of Don’s on January 06, 2021, ended in spoiling the image of the US as a purveyor democratic decency and governance.

President-elect Joe Biden does not have the kind of dubious legacies neither that of Dr. M. M. Singh or that of Mr. Donald Trump. Biden is a career politician of over five decades as he hold the credit of the US’s one of the youngest Senator when he elected to US’s Congress upper house that is Senate in 1972 at the age of 29, and one of the oldest President-elect, and that too with highest ever votes that any presidential candidate ever won. Prior to this he had been two terms Vice-President of the US. When Donald Trump wore the hat of Don for a constitutional coup to remain in The White House for second term despite being the loser in the election on November 03, 2020, the America’s entire corps of opinion-makers and law-makers including Republicans, Trump’s cabinet colleagues and Vice-President Mike Pence rallied behind him and his running mate (Joe Biden-Kamala Harris).

In view of the above, Joe Biden picking a leap from Dr. Singh’s legacy, that contributed social and voters polarization in India, and announcing post election, and I quote, “Our priority will be Black ……. to reopen and rebuild”, is certainly uncalled for and unfortunate. This is no doubt will further fuel the already polarized American society and politics which is not a healthy sign. This kind of statements have potentials to taint not only democracy but also social harmony and national integrity in long-term though the same benefits politicians in short-term.
