Perseverance of Mewar

0

The history of Rajasthan is as fascinating and romantic as its forts, Aravalli and chivalry. Among all the nobles and kings, there the niche in which Rana Pratap stands has become the holiest of holy. If courage was a distinguish badge of Rajasthan, Pratap had most share on it. If unflinching resolution and indomitable will ever made a hero of man, Pratap was one. If ever man a man fought against fearful odds and pulled through them, it was Pratap. Comfort and luxury was hugged by thousands of world’s hero, Pratap rejected them when they have to be bought at cost of independence and sovereignty. All of the Persia, England, Arabia felt honoured in sending costly embassies to Mughal Court, but Pratap sent word of defiance. What was the result of this? There was not a single pass in Aravalli which hasn’t witnessed the blood of brilliant victories and glorious defeats.

Mewar before Maharana Pratap:

Under the present dynasty, history of Mewar began in 728 AD, when Kalbhoj Bappa Rawal claimed the throne of Chittaur. He is reputed to have been defeated the Muslim force under Mohammad bin Qasim and threw them on other side of Indus. Bappa Rawal was succeeded by race of warriors. In the first Battle of Terain, Sumer Singh proved to be staunch ally of Prithviraj Chauhan and defeated Mohammad Ghori. After the sack of Chittaurgarh and Jauhar of Rani Padmavati in 1295, Mewar came under Muslim rule. This began more eventful period of strife, never deciding yet never ending resistance between Delhi and Mewar, which dyed history of Rajasthan in the blood of its heroic defenders. Then rose Rana Hammir, he expelled the Muslim governor from Mewar and waged a successful war against Muhammad Tughlaq. Tughlaq was defeated and made prisoner, he was released after surrendering Ajmer, Nagaur and Ranthambore. Rana Hammir was considered as lord of all the Princes in Rajasthan.

Then came Rana Kumbha, he defeated Mahmud, King of Malwa and captured it, there is a Vijay Stambh in Chittaur Fort. Kumbha built Kumbhalgarh fort and heavily fortified it. The most famous ancestor of Pratap was his grandfather Rana Sanga. Rana Sanga consolidated whole Rajputana, Central India and Malwa by defeating Sultan Mahmud, made him prisoner. Princes felt honoured in following Rana Sanga to every battle field, he lost his one hand, one leg and an eye in battles, yet lived a courageous life to inspire his followers. Rana Sanga defeated  Ibrahim Lodhi at Khatali in 1517 and again in 1518 and captured Chanderi. Sanga moved toward Delhi in order to establish Hindu dominion on Delhi after 350 years. After seizing Bayana, Rana Sanga was defeated at Battle of Khanwa on March 17, 1527 and Delhi was lost to Turks. Linked guns were used first time in this battle and Shiladi of Raisen switched side in midst of war, joined Turk camp under Babur. Rana Sanga left no successor worthy of his name.

Mewar during Maharana Pratap

Pratap was born in 1540, considered to be rightful heir of his courageous grandfather Rana Sanga. Against decision of Rana Udai Singh, Pratap was coronated at Gogunda by all other chiefs and commanders in decided ‘coup de main’. Pratap was now proclaimed Rana, custodian of Mewar and began to rule in the name of Ekling Nath ji. Jagmal, his brother left Mewar and joined Turk(Mughal) camp against Rana Pratap. Rana Pratap left for Kumbhalgarh, where he was received by Rao Chandrasen of Jodhpur, who had vowed eternal enmity against Turks. Accession of throne of Mewar was not bed of roses but it was the only seat of resistance against foreign Islamic imperialism.

Akbar in order to consolidate his rule started Mansabdari system and included large number of Hindus, who were not ready to fight for freedom. This include Todar Mal, Maan Singh, Bhagwan Das , Rao Raj of Bikanaear. Their ancestors were once fighting along with the army of Rana Sanga and now they were subjugated in the service of Turk Akbar. Rao Chandrasen of Jodhpur, Rao Kalyan of Bikanaear, Rao Udai Rathore didn’t submitted and started resistance in exile. Thus, when Pratap assumed the position of Rana, almost whole of Northern India acknowledged Turks as their sovereign and master. Mewar, Bundi and Sarohi didn’t surrendered or, entered any alliances. The rulers who surrendered eventually get their rule back but in the form of Jagir by Akbar.

At the time of Pratap’s accession to throne, half of the Mewar was under Turk but they never received revenue from that area because Pratap vowed farmers to not grow a single crop and defy the foreign, farmers did same. Whole tract of land has no crop whatsoever, Turk outpost has to be supplied food grains from Ajmer. Even Turks were not able to measure the part of land (7 districts) they control in Mewar. These are self evident fact that they control part of Mewar only on paper. Mewar was in the way between Gujarat ports and Agra, hence Akbar was desperate to see Rana Pratap submitting sovereignty of Mewar in Mugal (Turk) court.

Akbar sent 6 diplomatic missions to persuade Rana Pratap, but he defied every mission. Maan Singh, Bhagwan Das and Todar Mal were the main ones to carry these missions to Mewar. Maan Singh was invited to dinner when he arrived to meet Rana Pratap. After Maan Singh’s departure, Pratap gave order for purification of the site. Holy water of Ganges were poured to remove every stain of place having defiled by presence of Rajput who had preferred luxury over motherland and hard independence. Every proud son who has been invited to occasion bathed and changed clothes to remove the unholy touch of Maan Singh. Such were the Rana Pratap’s dislike for the Turks and their allies (whosoever they are). The empire of India was not worthwhile for Akbar if it had two sovereign heads in India with Hindupat in Mewar.

Akbar knew that, Mewar, holy land of Hindupat can not be invaded so easily. He was hesitant in going himself to battlefield. He doesn’t even fully trust his other Hindu commanders, he probably knew that in every Hindu heart whether sovereign or submitte, Mewar is inherently loved. For them, Pratap was not just a rebel but a Sovereign Hindu King because Mewar in its history of 800 years of existence never submitted to any invader. In the time of Rana Sanga, they were very close of even capturing Delhi. Mewar had subdued Malwa, Gujarat and Central India under its sword, Vijay Stambh in Chittaur signifies the glory of Mewar. Pratap himself rejected every offers of a place in Imperial court and decided to hug the independence of his motherland and defend it as long as he can.

Haldighati

Turk army invaded Mewar and battle was fought in Haldighati. The ground was uneven and it abounded in prickly shrubs. Mewar’s forward attack was so hard that Turk forward fell back upon its centre. The left wing of Turk army was defeated in no time, the central command under Pratap swept Ghazi Khan and central command of Turk army was broken, Turk army started running away. Badayuni described that “in 20 years this is the first time Mughal Army (Turk) is fleeing away from battle field”. Abul Fazal and Badayuni both praised Mewar army whose valour pushed back the large imperial army. Most of the Turk soldier fled upto 12 miles away from Haldi Ghati (Akbarnama, Vol.3 Page 174-175). The presence of Rana gave great encouragement to his followers, the left centre and forward army of Turks was broken, fled and killed (Jagdhish Temple inscription verse 40-42).

The battle was finished and Bhil archers were kiling every Turk by bow and arrows from hills and bushes. The Mewar line of Elephant penetrated into the core of Turk battle formation. Maan Singh mounted on his elephant was faced by Rana Pratap on his horse ‘Chetak’. Rana Pratap was busy whole day sword and made a glorious day, but there was one thing he had so much in heart – engagement with Maan Singh. Rana was at last on his prey & balancing his spear spurred, he delivered a full blow. Spear pierced through the body of Mahawat and cracked steeled Howdah. Maan Singh was saved but swords mounted on trunk of elephant pierced Chetak’s one leg (Amar Kavya, Page 85).

Jhala Man saved Rana by sacrificing his own life and Rana Pratap rode Chetak out of battle field. Battle was called of by Maan Singh due to heavy casualties on Turk side and he’s asked for more reinforcements from Ajmer. (Akbarnama, Badayuni, Sanskrit Inscriptions and Raj Prashasti have opposing views on casualties)

Marxist historians claimed that Mughal has decisive victory on that day in Haldighati. But it should be noticed that even after the Battle of Haldighati, all the lands donated or assigned to farmers were given in the name of Shri Ekling ji, undersigned by Dewan Rana Pratap. Akbar banished Maan Singh and Muslim commanders from imperial court for one year. Do Kings banish their victorious commanders or facilitate them ?

After Haldighati

Rana Pratap was left with limited resources around 3000 soldiers and few Bhil soldiers. Rana Pratap changed his way of battle from Open field to new technique of Guerrilla warfare which was later mastered by his great grandson Rana Raj Singh and in Deccan by Chhatrapati Raje Shivaji. (The guerrilla technique was so effective that once Raje Shivaji sent letter to Aurangzeb taunting him that if he has guts than collect Jaziya from Hindupat Rana Raj of Mewar). Rana Pratap decisively defeated Mughals in Battle of Dewair, 1582 around 30 Mughal posts were captured and 36000 Turks surrendered. Rana continued the Guerrilla war for 11 years, Bhil, Lohar and Traders everyone left their home and went to live in jungle to support their ‘Hindupat’ Rana. Rana’s attack were now more frequent, surprising and even more slaughtering. Marxist historians when talk about Haldighati take only next 2-3 months in consideration, when large number of Turks were poured from Ajmer and Agra is order to capture Gogunda. They don’t take Battle of Dewair or 11 years of prolonged war into consideration.

Either they should talk about only Haldighati day or talk about whole 11 years of war. Even Akbar stationed himself in Malwa sending more army in Mewar for completely capturing Rana, but he failed, he never went to Mewar himself leading forces. Rana Pratap then defeated Mughals and captured back all the Mewar including Kumbhalgarh and Gogunda, he only couldn’t capture back Chittaur fort. To wipe off ancient scores with Maan Singh, Rana led an expedition to Jaipur and captured all the revenue collected in Malpur, brought it back to Mewar. His life was so happening in jungle that, Rana used to have 3 meals on 2-3 different places in those 11 years from 1576 to 1587. He died in 1597, rather peacefully establishing Mewar to older glory except Chittaur Fort.

Maharana Pratap occupies very high place in the galaxy of the Hindu leaders who inaugurated the war against the Muslim domination in India. When whole northern plain submitted there was a line of warrior from Rana Hammir, Rana Kumbha, Rana Sanga and Maharana Pratap who kept hold on the sovereignty of Hindupat. They were later joined by illustrious Chatrapati Raje Shivaji, Maharaja Chhatrasaal and Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Punjab. Rana Pratap believed in forming coalitions against Turks, he united Deoras, Rathores, Hadas and Chauhans. As soon as one coalition died Rana would build another one. According to him, no coalition is permanent only goal of independence of motherland is permanent. Rana’s followers that include 1 Raja, 3 Raos and 7 Rawats never deserted him even after 11 years of fight and innumerable invasions, they bought their freedom by courage and blood. Rana has nothing to offer to Bhil tribals but they choose motherland over wealth and Swadharma over Turks. Rana Pratap hated Turks so immensely and think of them as violated of Swadharma and Swantantrata. Pratap taught that their is no harm in delaying battles till the appropriate force is acquired, and no problem in sudden attack without announcing to enemy.

A great General, a brave warrior, a successful organiser, a Prince among men, a generous foe. Maharana Pratap’s name is sure to be honoured where these virtue is respected.

Right to protest of few privileged ones vs. Rights of the unorganized masses

0

Yesterday (4th Jan), on the occasion of the birthday of legendary Punjabi Singer Gurdas Maan Ji, one of my friends who know that I am big fan of him forwarded the Youtube video link of his song “Punjab”. The message conveyed by the lyrics of that song in the soulful voice of Gurdas Maan Ji is really heart wrenching. The theme and script of the video song is even more moving and lachrymose where the singer makes Shaheed Bhagat Singh of childhood age to time travel in the future to the Punjab of 2017. There, after seeing the deterioration of the cultural, social and moral values in Punjab, Bhagat Singh is shocked, agonized and wonder for what kind of future he had sacrificed his life. In the penultimate scene of the video, a crowd of protestors are fully blocking a main road by sitting on it near the statue of Saheed Bhagat Singh. They do not allow even an ambulance with a critical patient inside it to pass. The poor old wife of the patient folds her hands and begs the protestors for passage for the ambulance but she is mercilessly pushed and thrown on road. This very intense and heart piercing scene of the video song got stuck to my mind and lingered there for hours.

It made me think though it as a scene from a scripted video to make people realize the degradation in values but it depicts sad reality which is happening daily on the roads in today’s India. In the name of protest, roads are blocked for weeks and even National Highways are not spared. Today when Delhi –Jaipur Highway (NH-48) was blocked at many points including Shajanpur Border, thousands including ladies and small kids got stranded in traffic for longs hours and then traffic was diverted to the other inner narrow road where it crawled whole day.

Be it on the name of Anti CAA protest, or on the name of farmer’s protest or protest for demanding reservation for Gurjars or Jats, traffic is brought to halt, trains are stopped with impunity and the daily life of the commuters is put in upheaval. The right of patient to get treatment, right of an accident victim to reach the nearest trauma center, right of a daily wager to earn living and to travel to his workplace in order to avoid sleeping empty stomach, right of a shopkeeper to open his store , right of student to go to school; in short, the constitutional right to life and personal liberty of the common and voiceless citizens is sacrificed for the right of protest of politically motivated elements who have vested interest and who are capable of gathering and stage-managing crowd on roads owing to money power.

The natural question which arises about road blocking protests especially now ongoing so called farmers protest are – Whether the demands made by protesting groups are justified or not? Who are participating in the protest? Are they really farmers? Who are the organizers?

When this protest at Singhu Border of Delhi started, it was the sowing time for Rabi crop and the farmers did not have even a spare single hour to be away from their fields. If farmers would have come on roads leaving the fields, Rabi crop sowing would have decreased not increased by 4% as recorded by Agriculture Ministry. Regarding the demands to roll back the bills, farmers of India already waited long enough for much needed comprehensive Agriculture reform Bills. To reduce the distress in Agriculture sector and to pull out the farmers from the perennial cycle of misery, Agriculture Scientists, Economists, farmer leaders, political leaders cutting across party lines have been recommending these reform bills since last four decades.

National commission for farmers headed by Professor M.S Swaminathan (Father of Green Revolution in India) and umpteen number of other committees and commissions made at both state and central level, to study the causes and solutions for agrarian distress, unequivocally batted for need of Agricultural reforms. But no previous governments had political will and resolve to go ahead for the welfare of politically unorganized and voiceless farmers at the cost of annoying the traders and intermediaries who form a strong and consolidated pressure group in electoral politics. The ongoing protest is handy work of politically dwindling congress and the left parties to get traction. With the protestor’s attempts of capturing the toll tax booths on various roads of Haryana and the demand to take back the cases registered against Shaheen Bagh protestors, it is quite evident that the ulterior motive is to spread anarchic mayhem.

A pattern can be observed in recent democracy disrupting protests where first congress starts opposing a constitutionally passed bill on the roads not inside parliament. Congress Party fund is thrown to gather the crowd and then to stage- manage the crowd to block the roads. Then blockades acts as a nucleation point for urban Naxals, sponsored media, Pseudo seculars, leftists, fissiparous forces, intellectuals and academicians who have been beneficiaries of congress largesse. Career protestors like Yogender Yadav and celebrities like Swara Bhaskar also join to add to the mass appeal. The leftists, who have network and allegiance beyond national border, signal to their international masters who start maligning the image of India at global arena by giving biased and agenda based coverage of protest in left leaning international media. These protests grow inorganically in size and nuisance, and as per plan it slowly turns into organized blackmailing exercise. Control rooms are made to event-manage the protest. Rumor mills are activated to churn out vicious lies and dangerous rumors.

The way some unscrupulous rumor mongers could feed on the fear psychosis of innocent and gullible people and spread the rumor of monkey-man attacks and Choti-Katua (Baird cutter) cutting hairs of ladies, Similarly Congress and left parties have also spread the rumor that farmers will lose their land to corporate houses in contract farming. Congress is expert in knitting web of lies as done during Shaheen Bagh protest also, it had spread the rumor that all Muslims will lose Indian citizenship post CAA and would be forcibly sent to Pakistan. Such wild rumors come very handy for rabble-rousers.

The visuals of the tractors pushing and crushing police barricades from Singhu border show that the danger of protest turning violent is looming large. Though, in most of the cases the organizers and managers of protest themselves plan violence as the climax of protest, but sometimes it may lead to violence impromptu at the drop of a hat. In that case who should be held responsible for the loss of lives and property, the organizers of the protest cannot escape the accountability. When we enter a factory, the name of factory owner is displayed on reception for the purpose of legal responsibility and liability under factories act 1948. Similarly, A Heavy commercial vehicle may be owned by a company, driven by professional truck driver, still the name of the concerned head of company is written on it in order to fix legal liabilities under Motor Vehicle Act, in case of any mishap. The point I want to make is that organizer should be answerable for the acts of participating persons and responsibility of any violent activity should be fixed on the organizer from the day one. If any damage to any property or any injury to individual or loss of life happens, doctrine of Respondeat Superior should be applied and the organizers should be brought to books.

The steadfastness and earnestness with which Modi led BJP government has passed GST Bill, Triple Talaq Bill, CAA Bill and Agricultural reforms bills, it leave no room for doubt that government is resolute enough to take whatever hard steps necessary for the national interest and welfare of its citizens. It implies that many more revolutionary bills and decisions are going to come and the opposition parties, which are opposing even nation’s progress itself, will take recourse to blackmailing by organizing protests. In the light of above mentioned facts, I think, Honorable supreme court should step in to safeguard the rights of common citizens of India.

In the past also, Honorable Supreme Court has done exemplary work by issuing laws and policy through the means of its various judgments. Such laws and policy acted as a tool for action for government and have been beneficial for reducing the misery of common men, protecting his/her rights and for holding up the ethos and values of democracy. Example of such law is “Vikhaka guidelines” as stipulated by Honorable Supreme Court (Vishaka and others Vs State of Rajasthan, 1997) in a land mark decision. Vishakha guidelines were set of procedural guidelines to be followed in case of sexual harassment at work place. In the year 2010, a two judge bench of supreme ordered government to distribute free food grains to poor and paved the path for right to food (PUCL vs Union of India, 2011). In another landmark decision, Supreme Court got the model code of conduct implemented by Election commission of India. To save the citizens of Delhi from the perils of pollution, hearing on a PIL, in 1996 apex court ordered to convert all the public transport to CNG fuel in Delhi.

During Shaheen Bagh protest, in response to a PIL, a three judge bench of honorable supreme court has stated that it cannot make universal policy on right to protest as situation might vary case to case. But in the light of recent protests, whatever may vary from case to case but the fundamental right to life and personal liberty of common citizen is violated unapologetically by the protestors for sure in every case. It is time for honorable Supreme Court to revisit this earlier decision by referring the matter to larger bench. The variation which exists from case to case should not prevent formulation of universal guidelines or a model code which will help in defining what is allowed during protest and what is not.

Now, it is high time that Honorable Supreme Court lay down the directives for organizing protest. In my opinion following guidelines should be included:-

(1) First of all, one or two open and big ground should be earmarked as allowed protest sites in every city instead of roads or railway track. Apart from these designated places, nowhere else protests should be allowed.

(2) Before kick starting the protest, it should be mandatory for the organizers to submit the details about the organizing team, purpose of protest, charter of demands, proposed duration and justification for demands.

(3) The number of participants in protest with copy of their aadhar card should be submitted to the local administration. It will help in avoiding unscrupulous persons joining the protest.

(4) The amount of funds arranged for the protest and the source of funding should be declared.

(5) Identification of the lead organizer or lead group of organizer for the purpose of legal liabilities if protest turns violent or any untoward incident happen.

(6) If the organizers strictly follow all of the above guidelines, government may give permission for protest and arrange for toilet facility and basic health facility at the open ground chosen for protest.

Now if the Honorable Supreme Court formulates guidelines and code of conduct for protests, it will strengthen the real democracy which was envisaged in our constitution and which is being trampled upon by blackmailocracy of blockades and protests. Blackmailocracy has now become a tool in the hands of the political parties which earlier thrived on divisive and appeasement politics. Such political parties are now diabolically desperate as they have become irrelevant and struggling to survive in the era of developmental Politics initiated in India by Modi led BJP govt.

I hope, Modi government will not relent to the theatrics of stage-managed protest. I hope, it will not retract this big step taken in the direction of doubling the farmer’s income, It will stand for the poor farmer who is going to get benefit from these reforms but not coming on road as he is the real farmer and busy in his hard work at field, It will stand for the poor farmer who sweats for months to grow the vegetables but plough through fresh and standing crop due to fallen price which will not fetch him even the cost of transportation.

I hope, it will definitely stand for the teenage children of the horticulture farmers of various districts of Haryana who wake up 3 AM in the morning in winters not to prepare for board or competitive examinations but to go and sell their crop of flowers at the Ghazipur Flower Mandi of Delhi. They sacrifice their precious time and take the pain of transporting the flowers to Delhi to get better selling rate which will fetch them a few hundred rupees extra. I pray, it should stand for farmers of remote villages of rural India who have to pay the commission of the Aaddati and pay for transportation of their crop to the nearest Mandi which might be at least 30 to 40 Kms away from his farm. I hope, our government will bring the buyers of farm produce directly at the farm gate who will arrange for transportation themselves.

In last, I really hope, come what may, these three agriculture reform acts will continue as it is not only about getting more rates of crops but it is about empowering our farmers, it is about ameliorating the plight of rural women and households, it is about breaking the vicious circle of farmer distress, it is about giving more time to the daughters and sons of farmers to study, to participate in sports, to dream big for their future, who are now overly consumed in the semi efficient and semi productive agrarian activities.

India’s tour of Australia 2020-21

0

The Victory at Brisbane reveals dauntless courage and speaks volume of the character Indian boys have exhibited over last few months in Australia. The away tours had always been tough nut to crack for any cricketing side of the world and so was it for Indians. The corona virus pandemic had its mental toll on the players due to stringent protocol of bio bubble. The team was adherent to the rules, breach of which could have put lives on line. The players went Physically fragile too, playing IPL, which was spread over a month. The team had to face Australia in their backyard after a week. The Australian media, former players along with cricket experts was back to work as twelfth man of the team. They began praising heaps and bounds about the strength of the side after inclusion of Steve Smith and David Warner who were unavailable in last series between the two arch rivals of modern day cricket.

The predictions were adversary to India signifying Australians as favourite on their turf. The advent of Marnus was another factor adding to their robust rationale.India, on the other side, was to miss the likes of Rohit Sharma who has been sharpest arsenal in limited over format of the game and his fitness issue came surrounded with huge controversy and rumors of rift between senior players arose. The exclusion of Surya Kumar Yadav who had loads of runs raised questions on the management of the side. They initiated one day Internationals with lot of expectations behind them because of talents players have showcased in biggest league of the Cricket. India began series with several individual contributions by middle order. Those, however, overshadowed by the authoritative hundreds of Australian top order and India kept on lossing its hold onto series in subsequent matches with sole victory coming in the last game. They moved to shortest format in no time and played to their potential, turning around the table with emphatic series win though it didn’t hold much importance in context of the tour.

The whole eye and gossip in cricket fraternity was centered around purest format which was long awaited and due to define the series and success on the trip. To begin in oval was most apt and felicitous for Indians and achievement in past were encouraging. In spite of the favourable facts, the test resulted into a nightmare as batsman crumbled down in a bizarre fashion and failed miserably after taking lead in first part of the game. The aussies continued its winning streak with the Pink ball. The failure of India under Kohli raised many eyebrows and anticipation seemed to be turning into reality. The team was on its knee and best batsman of the lot was to leave the dressing room. The Paternity leave of Skipper after Adelaide test became talk of the town and chances of India winning series was minimal in his absence. The downtrodden team was handed over to Rahane who has been underperforming and playing to cement his position.

Moreover, there were lot of conundrum to address after pitiable performance with bat for Indians. The captain calmly rose to the occasion and grabbed the opportunity with both hands and led India to a historic win at Melbourne in Boxing day Test. The comeback left Australians gobsmaked and infused new vigour in Visitors. The injuries, instead, remained a cause of concern in the dugout with Umesh Yadav being latest addition. The SCG became testimony of several forced inclusion in order to park a more balanced unit. The fresh blood in the person of Subhman Gill and Siraj who had been consistent performer in domestic circuit and first class cricket was given a run. The bowling, however, became rookie and Bumrah was only frontline pace bowler left in squad. Despite all the odds, the team fought bravely and put an exemplary performance. The display of resilience and Perseverance on the last day when team was on the brink of loss brought out the beauty of the Game and India registered a victorious draw sending in a strong message for the Coach Langer and Captain Paine. The press conference followed by match introduced softer side of the Tim, apologizing to Ashwin and others for sledging, looked quite non- Australians in nature as they are conceived to play hard. It was unprecedented and seemed to be another brain fade moment for them.

The racial abuse inflicted on Indian players garnered criticism on the part of local crowd. Meanwhile; India, booming with confidence after saving the test where defeat was almost inevitable, succumbed to more injuries and their match winners were back for rehabilitation. It necessitated insertion of T Natrajan and W sundar who were serving as Net bowlers for the team. The fact that Australian remained unbeaten at Brisbane in last three decade compelled management to mull over possible permutations and Combination for series decider. India went in with four fast bowlers on traditionally pace friendly track with experience of four test matches in their piggyback. The eviction of Kuldeep Yadav caught everyone by surprise unless debutant proclaimed his arrival by sending back centurion of the last test. India was lagging behind after they found themselves trailing by more than one fifty runs when two of their Youngest player with negligible experience hanged in and took India closer to first inning total. Their innings embodied the mindset and skill set of Younger Generation as they barely looked uncomfortable by the pace of speedsters.

In fact, They established a belief that they can compete and made India smell a series victory on foreign soil. The 320 plus target in fourth inning at Gabba was never easy on a drizzle affected day where a team couldn’t plan the chase. The wicket of Rohit in early hours of the last day looked to exclude successful chase out of the equation. The partnership between intrepid subhman Gill and resolute Pujara kept hopes alive, though. The wicket of latter came as blessing in disguise for India as it brought ravaging Rishabh pant to bat who could change the course of the Game in hours and he kept composure to Put final nail in the coffin. They left aussies frustrated and world cricket awestruck after bashing them at their bastion in a fascinating and Unbelievable manner.

Maratha expedition in the land of five rivers

0

The Maratha- Afghan clash stemmed back to the Battle of Delhi (1757) when Najib Khan assisted Ahmed Shah Abdali on his 4th invasion. Raghunath Rao captured Delhi, appointed Antaji Mankeshwar as Governor of Delhi province while Alamgir II was retained as titular head with no actual power. Najib was spared on a tribute of 5 lakhs. This prompted Najib to invite Abdali on his 5th invasion commonly known as Third Battle of Panipat.

1758: Combined Maratha-Sikh marched against the Afghans. After defeating Afghans first at Sirhind & then Lahore, Marathas established dominance from Sind upto the foothills of the Hindu-Kush ranges with the forts at Attock, Peshawar and Multan bordering the outposts. Afghans were mercilessly killed and the Sikhs captured the Afghan soldiers and took them back to Amritsar to clean the Sarovar where earlier the Afghans had dumped dead cow carcasses.

Raghunathrao’s letter to the Peshwa, 4 May 1758:

1759: On hearing the news that his son Timur Shah was chased by Marathas, Abdali mobilized an army and decided to march on North-West India.

14 March 1760: Peshwa dispatched an army of 40000 under the command of Sadashiv Rao Bhau which was accompanied by roughly 200,000 non-combatants.

13 Jan. 1761: Amidst shortage of provisions after Maratha peace envoys were dismissed by Abdali due to gullible intervention of Najib, Maratha chiefs decided to perish in the battle rather than starving.

Battle: Maratha opted traditional circle formation in which camp followers & non-combatants were kept in inner circle. Ibrahin Gardi put his effective yet heavy & static canons in the middle. Abdali moved further back to watch the battle from a distance on his horse. The heir of Peshwa, Vishvas Rao (18) mounted on his elephant to battlefield. The Maratha carawan moved towards Delhi at slow pace while fighting and defending simultaneously. Bhau didn’t kept any reserves and Abdali launched his ferocious attack after seeing the dwindling Maratha lines. They were no match for numerical & qualitative Afghan troops. The death of Vishvas Rao by a headshot bullet served as catalyst and soon Maratha fell one by one to Afghans. Malhar Rao was successful in rescuing Bhau’s wife & other non-combatants.

Battle Formation at #ThirdBattleofPanipat #Panipat

Reasons of failure:

  • 1. Inclusion of large number of camp followers who were on pilgrimage to Hindu holy sites proved burden on provisions.
  • 2. Bhau’s diplomatic failure:- Bhau was successful in Deccan but he was completely unaware of the realpolitik of North. He left Poona in hope of finding North Indian allies. Meddling in internal affairs of Rajputs made them unable to struck a deal with Jaipur. Rejection of Surajmal Jat’s proposal to make him governor of Delhi made Bhau angry. Surajmal, who had marched with Maratha upto Delhi, left the camp. Appointment of Adina Beg as governor of Lahore made Sikhs suspicious and they watched the battle from a distance.
  • On the other hand Abdali was supported by allies like Najib & Shuja at each & every turn.
  • 3. On hearing the news of Abdali’s arrival, Maratha garrisons in Punjab & Lahore province left without giving any fight.
  • It was like the armies are running in ground without any leader. Had they put up the resistance like Bhimpal or Leonidas the result would have been different. Also Sikhs may have supported them against Afghan plunderers.
  • 4. Capture of Delhi:- Seeing Hindu ruler on Delhi throne made distrust among Muslims. Shuja of Awadh whose father was helped by Marathas sided with Abdali against the advice of his mother. Abdali exploited this opportunity and termed his campaigne as Jihaad . Maratha were unable to give this fight colors of Hindu vs Muslim. The garrison left at Delhi was isolated and easily slaughtered by Afghans.
  • 5. Politics at Poona and the denial of help to Raghunath Rao who was supposed to go North & reinforce the Bhau’s forces was another reason for failure.
  • 6. Maratha opted for open ground strategy over their traditional Guerrilla warfare system against the numerical superior heavy Afghan cavalry.

Nevertheless Maratha succeded in both their primary objectives:

  1. 1. Narmada river was not the upper line of Maratha Empire.
  2. 2. Heavy losses at Panipat made Abdali never to plunder Hindu holy sites in Gangatic Doab.
  3. Despite victorious, Abdali was unable to hold Delhi and after knowing the Maratha contingent is on its way to revenge Bhau, he decided to leave for Kabul & wrote a letter to Peshwa (10 Fab. 1761):
  1. In fact the high Afghan casualties at Panipat made them very weak and Sikhs easily drove the Afghans back easily. Sind & Lahore were completely subdued in 1770s 10 years after when Marathas were fully recovered under Peshwa Madhav Rao.
  2. Afghans and other Rohillas who were sided with Abdali in 1761 were punished. Najib was defeated by Mahadji Shinde who served as the Kingmaker of Delhi for next 30 years.
Peshwa Madhav Rao

The Britishers in Bengal studied this battle closely and emerged as new power in the subcontinent. Today, Indians have to get over with their linguistic, religious, regional and caste divides as soon as possible. All these fault lines are waiting to be exploited by the outsiders. Basically the Battle of Panipat teach us how NOT to fight a battle.

Impeachment: American democracy on trial

0

The violence of Capitol Hill on 6th January gave birth to a demand solely advocated by Democrats that we should impeach Donald Trump for his speech. The Democrats accused him of instigating the violence, abusing his presidential power, and misdemeanor. To understand The constitutional legality of his impeachment, we need to understand the Constitution of America; Under First Amendment of the United States Constitution, it stated that prevents the government from making laws that regulate an establishment of religion or that would prohibit the free exercise of religion, or abridge the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the freedom of assembly, or the right to petition the government for redress of grievances.

IN Schenck vs. United States Case 1919 Supreme Court of United States ruled that any speech intended to result in a crime and created a clear and present danger to the US not protected under the First Amendment, but this case result was overruled in 1969 Brandenburg vs. Ohio The Court held that the government could not punish inflammatory speech unless that speech is “directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action.” During the Black life matters protest, Nancy Pelosi, representative of the Democrat Party and speaker of the house, said, “I just don’t know why there aren’t uprisings all over the country. Maybe there will be.” Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, that “protesters should not let up,” if this instigation of Violence and civil unrest speeches protected under First Amendment then what’s wrong with Trump Speech “Trump On 6th January 2021 speech “Now it is up to Congress to confront this egregious assault on our democracy.

After this, we’re going to walk down, and I’ll be there with you. We’re going to walk down. We’re going to walk down, anyone you want, but I think right here. We’re going walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women. We’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.” If we look at this transcript we can find this was not am provocative speech neither it instigates violence. One comedian named Kathy Griffin says Trump should inject deadly syringe ‘with nothing but air inside”.

This Impeachment becomes a political tool used by Democrats to suppress the voices which don’t align with their ideology. Recently Twitter suspended Trump account with the allegation that his tweets can instigate violence. Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat party representative, said, “We take an oath to uphold our Constitution, to support and defend it, which includes supporting the freedom of speech of every single person in this country, It is really disheartening to see how people are so inward-looking at only supporting of voices of those who agree with them, rather than recognizing the country that our founders envisioned for all of us,” – Gabbard.

The Trump supporters went to Parler, which proclaim itself free from censorship. Alas, it’s servers de-platformed by AWS Amazon. Google delisted from Google play later Apple Store also delisted them. This is a great threat not only to the American Constitution but it also the people across the globe how these Big Tech Giants can become the enemy of free speech. Regardless of what party or ideology, someone held this censorship is a great threat to liberty.

What’s new in WhatsApp’s privacy policy update 2021? Is it concerned about the privacy of the users?

0

We will explore why WhatsApp has rolled out payments in India and other countries. It is not shocking to discern this part of the WhatsApp privacy policy getting promoted further.

Before this week, WhatsApp initiated rolling out in-app warnings to Android and iOS users disclosing a Whatsapp privacy policy change in its Terms of Service and privacy policy. The notification notified users of an update in the manner user data is addressed by the platform, how businesses can utilize Facebook employed services to store and manage, and the company members with Facebook to propose integrations across the Facebook Company Product. Then, Whatsapp Privacy Policy update 2021 informed the entire users that they need to accept the new terms and policy till the 8th of February 2021 if they want to go on with using the application.

WhatsApp’s new privacy policy update 2021 speaks of that when users attain and accept “third-party benefits or other Facebook Company Products that are incorporated with our services, those third-party services may accumulate data about what you or others are communicating with them.”

WhatsApp Privacy Policy has updated its privacy strategy, and users have given a deadline until February 8 to adopt the new terms and conditions. The new Whatsapp Privacy Policy change asserts how user data is affected when there are dealings with a business on the platform and delivers more details on incorporation with Facebook, WhatsApp’s parent company.

Does WhatsApp Privacy Policy update 2021 share your messages with Facebook?

Of course, not. The Whatsapp privacy policy does not change the strategy WhatsApp delights personal chats. WhatsApp continues end-to-end encrypted — no third party can look over them. In a declaration, WhatsApp stated: “The Whatsapp privacy policy update 2021 does not change WhatsApp’s information sharing processes with Facebook and does not affect the ways so many people convey their concerns privately with friends or family WhatsApp remains deeply dedicated to ensuring people’s privacy.”

What information does WhatsApp Privacy Policy update 2021 share with Facebook?

Data conversation with Facebook is in reality, already holding its place. While users in the European Union can select out of data-sharing with Facebook, the remaining part of the world does not have the same choice.

WhatsApp conveys the following information to Facebook and its different companies:

  • account signup information (phone number),
  • transaction data (WhatsApp now has payment options in India),
  • service-related news,
  • information on how you reach others (including businesses), mobile gadget data, and IP address.

It is also accumulating more information at a device hardware-level now.

Why does this Whatsapp data sharing with Facebook matter?

The policy provides reasons for the data-exchange with Facebook: from confirming better security and disputing spam to enhance the user experience, which was there in the earlier Whatsapp privacy policy as well.

But the new WhatsApp privacy policy change is a further indication of WhatsApp’s deeper incorporation with the Facebook group of companies. CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 2019 discussed his cross-platform perception across Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp — he named it “interoperability”.

Instagram’s Direct Messages and Facebook Messenger have already been incorporated. Facebook wishes to bring more services to WhatsApp and has developed a feature called Rooms. The integration has been holding its place for a while now.

Does it signify WhatsApp will utilize your data for ads?

WhatsApp Privacy Policy doesn’t exhibit ads like Google Search yet, and the documented proposals appear to have been postponed. If you are uncomfortable that personal messages will be utilized to target ads on WhatsApp, that won’t go on because they are end to end encrypted.

But the enhanced data exchange with Facebook will be utilized to promote ad experience across other outputs of the company.

Is WhatsApp storing messages?

Of course, Not, says WhatsApp. As per the statement of the Whatsapp privacy policy update 2021, once a message is sent, it is “deleted” from the corporation’s servers. WhatsApp stocks a message only when it “cannot be sent immediately” — the message can then remain on its servers “for up to 30 days” in an encrypted order as WhatsApp resumes to strive to send it again. If the message is unsent even after 30 days, the message then gets deleted.

What does the Whatsapp privacy policy update 2021 say about data exchanged with businesses?

The new Whatsapp privacy policy update 2021 illustrates how businesses obtain data when a user reaches with them on the platform: content exchanged with a business on WhatsApp will be noticeable to all the people who are incorporated with the business. This is noteworthy because WhatsApp currently has more than 50 million business accounts. For WhatsApp, this is a conceivable monetization model.

The Whatsapp Privacy policy update 2021 explains that some “businesses might be functioning with third-party service providers (which may incorporate Facebook) to work for managing their information with their customers”. If you want to know how the business is dealing with the information you exchange with them, WhatsApp suggests that users browse the “business’ privacy policy or reach the business directly”.

Before the Whatsapp Privacy Policy update 2021, there has been a lot of chitchat on the internet about WhatsApp exchange user data with other social media applications like Facebook. Most users on Twitter have been attracting one another into leaving WhatsApp and propelling a change to other encrypted messengers like Signal and Telegram.

But there is nothing to worry about the user’s privacy with their information. WhatsApp Privacy Policy update 2021 asserts how user data is affected when there are dealings with a business on the platform and delivers more details on incorporation with Facebook, WhatsApp’s parent company.

However, WhatsApp is very concerned about the user’s data exchange with any other platform. It has explained everything in the terms and conditions of the Privacy Policy. WhatsApp’s information sharing processes with Facebook and it also doesn’t affect the ways so many people convey their concerns privately with friends or family WhatsApp remains deeply dedicated to ensuring people’s privacy.

Opposition politics and world’s largest Corona vaccination program

0

Finally, in India, the world’s largest COVID vaccination program has started. As soon as the vaccination has been started various statements from political party leaders started flowing in media. The statement which made me write this article is from Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav’s latest Statement as ‘When will the COVID vaccine reach the poor people?’

Earlier, the statement from the same leader stated that “This is BJP’s Vaccine! I will not get vaccinated by it!” I mean this is ridiculous. Not too behind in the timeline in the year 2020 opposition leaders continuously kept asking the Indian Government about the research and manufacturing of the vaccine. Opposition leaders are still busy misleading the common people of India.

Recently, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi asked Prime Minister Narendra Modiji about vaccination programs quoting, “When is India’s turn Modi Ji?” When finally vaccine made publicly and the world’s largest Vaccination program started then they started misleading people of India that ‘Vaccine is not free!’, ‘Vaccine dose brings Impotence!’ and so on.

A baseless and ridiculous statement came from another Samajwadi Party leader and spokesperson I.P. Singh stated that, ‘COVID vaccine will kill poor!’ This is the lowest standard of politics. How can one make poor people fear before the vaccination? Now, in the latest statement, Akhilesh Yadav is asking the central government, ‘When the poor people will get vaccinated?’ Nothing can be as ridiculous as this. Same party but two contradictory statements within 2 days is well. As the government of India has already given the protocol for vaccination. The protocol says first of all the Corona Vaccine will be given to CORONA warriors (Doctors and Health Workers). Then the turn comes for the old age senior citizens of India then younger age people will get vaccinated.

Despite giving a clear guideline for the vaccination, opposition parties are misleading people by throwing baseless and useless statements in media and social media.

In all this chaos one more question is continuously hammering in my head that India has lost the responsible and strong opposition. India desperately missing constructive opposition. In India, nowadays the opposition’s job is just to opposite government initiatives. Creating problems in front of the government by misleading innocent Indian people. I must say Indian opposition has lost not only its sensitivity but also credibility! India needs an opposition that can debate and be a part of the solution in co-operation with the government.

Jai Hind!

NDTV’s unethical practices and questionable integrity

0

The recent Nidhi Razdan Harvard fiasco has once again brought NDTV’s appalling work culture, questionable integrity and unethical practices to the surface. She alleges that she had been a victim of a sophisticated phishing attack. As of now there is only her version of the story available, her tweets, here blog and her words, and that’s it, nothing more. There is absolutely nothing concrete about the act. For now, we don’t have any option other than believing in what she says. However, if indeed she was a victim of a sophisticated phishing attack it was a very unique kind of attack. Probably the only one of its kind. The “victim” of the attack not only reaped financial benefits because of the scam but also added stars in her approval ratings.

She covered the US election as an Associate professor, not just once but several times. You must have already seen tons of her tweets where she proudly stated her “Associate Professor at Harvard” designation to add weight to her statements. You could have a look at one of the videos here, you could easily hear her new introduction by Prannoy: “Professor Nidhi at Harvard, You will make them proud, Mark my words” albeit sounds a little laughable at this point. A snapshot from that debate:

This does raise a big question for NDTV’s credibility. How do I know that the other panelists that NDTV invites in its debates and discussions on a regular basis are not fake or so to say twitter professors? Every other day, some anchor claims that xyz professor says that xyz policy implemented by the Indian Govt is not good for the people of India. Is anybody verifying the credentials? It is clear that since, NDTV is not doing any kind of verification before inviting the panelists how am I suppose to know who is authentic and who is not?

NDTV encashed this opportunity quite handsomely on twitter as well:

Associate Professor, Harvard just adds a lot of weight to a statement. Doesn’t it? Not only this, she had been using this new designation of hers for her personal gains as well.

The so called certified news verification trainer did not ask for any documents, if they would have, they would have known. Wouldn’t they? How are these people verifying news? By looking at twitter? Or did they already know about this and were playing alongside her? After all they were also making money. Weren’t they?

Moreover using a logo and designation like this isn’t just unethical, it is illegal, at least in Europe. I mentioned EU specifically because I know about it. A few years ago, after I made my final masters thesis presentation, I walked up to my professor to ask when will the final grades be available, he stated “As of today, you have passed your exams and can collect a letter stating the same from the international students office, using which you can apply for different jobs. You will receive your final grades in a few weeks time. And remember, you can not use Master of Science as a designation in front of your name until the time final grades are approved and you get a certificate with the university stamp on it.” I guess, the law does not apply to me alone, it applies to everyone including her. Since, she was going there as a professor, she would have needed University’s Contract and official business card to be able to use the logo and designation.

As if all this was not embarrassing for her, she wrote a blog explaining how she was tricked into believing that she got a job from Harvard, exposing her already questionable and dubious integrity even more. She says there is a Journalism course at Harvard “Harvard Extension School.” For a moment let us agree to her, okay there is a degree. The thing is Harvard Extension School is not Harvard University and it definitely is not Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

They are entirely different, the issued degrees are different, the logos are different. You could see the difference in the logos yourself, I tried to see what logo comes up if I add education on Linkedin, the exact same options would appear if you fill up the work related info, have a look:

She is using the first logo instead of the second one, simply to misguide people. May be she would not have got 92.2k likes and almost 15k “congrats” on her twitter profile if she had mentioned HES instead of a school like Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. And mind it, I am not saying this, you could have a look at the Harvard blog for this, a few lines from the blog:

“A lot of people do not make it clear that they attended the Extension School, and instead list “Harvard University” on their resumes, either in a misguided justification to hide the Extension School affiliation, or an outright misleading attempt to make it seem as if they graduated from Harvard College, the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS)”

Turns out she is not the only one who lies and has questionable integrity. But others are not posing as the torch bearers of truth in the country.

She wrote a complete blog without investigating about HES, what kind of investigative journalist is she? I wonder how she managed to win International Press Institute award for excellence in journalism for Kathua rape and murder case expose. I guess the worth and significance of the journalism awards is not any more than that of the film fare awards in India. Or perhaps the sole purpose of these awards is to be used as a means to express dissent by returning them when there is a policy you don’t like. Phishing attacks are serious and should not be taken lightly, any body can fall victim of these attacks. However, it is not expected out of an experienced journalist with over two decades of experience to just have no clue as to what is happening. I guess its the work culture that clouded her judgement i.e. she is the smartest person in the room and the way she sees a situation is the only possible way to look at it and is now a universal truth, rest every thing else is just a propaganda. Is it not weird that she not even once cared to see if there is another side of her own story?

Not surprisingly other reporters in NDTV are not any different. Their integrity and ethics are as dubious and questionable as hers. Just a few days ago, another star performer of NDTV’s Prime Time, Mr. Ravish Kumar was slammed for spreading fake news.

He has already apologized for this and accepted his mistake. Its easy, promote your own agenda, run propaganda, spread fake news and when caught, say “Sorry, it was an honest mistake”. To err is human, he might or rather will do it again, what can anybody do. As soon as the government comes up with some regulation, freedom of press would be in danger. Wouldn’t it be?

The problem with people like them is that they think they are the only smart, literate, intellectual people in India, whatever they say is the ultimate truth and anyone who questions their perspective or tries to look at the other aspects, is a dismissed as a Bhakt, an andbhakt, a Sanghi or a graduate from WhatsApp university. You can literally see Ravish Kumar calling out these names literally in each of his interactions; not just calling names for other channels and reporters but also for the audience.

I think it is the culture at NDTV to be dismissive and arrogant. Prime Time has literally become a parody show and is no more a mainstream news show. You should compare Zee News’ DNA by Sudhir Chaudhary and NDTV’s Prime Time by Ravish Kumar. You can easily see the difference. I am not at all talking about the content of the shows (I know different people would have different opinions, which is absolutely fine), I am talking only about things like professionalism, attitude, tone, body language, facial expressions, choice of words etc. A lot of you tube journalists are more professional, sincere and serious than the ones at NDTV. It is no wonder that the New Delhi Television Limited (NDTV) is posting losses quarter after quarter and its stock prices are constantly falling.

Yeah, of course the channel wants every one to believe that its not their fault. But in reality it is their and only their fault. They were the champions only when the competition was minimal. There stock prices started falling since 2007-08, just for those who might be thinking that their stocks are falling only during this government. They are infact sailing in the same boat that Indian National Congress is sailing; the existential crisis boat. If both INC and NDTV have to survive, they need to change the people they currently have with them.

In looking for people to hire, look for three qualities : Integrity, intelligence and energy. And if they don’t have the first, the other two will kill you.
