Indians are dancing to China’s propaganda songs

0

Indian media is closely following China just like “Winnie the Pooh” chases honey. Although Pooh is now banned in China as it resembles China’s Supreme leader and communist party head Xi-Jinping, another absurd reason to ban something in China. Jokes apart, now it’s time for some serious stuff on India-China relationship and future of the relationship.

Let’s start with a bitter truth. If China starts a full-fledged war with India, India may lose or  defeat the giant. It’s a gamble for the communist party to play. The Chinese army is technologically superior to the Indian Army, their budget is more than 3 times that of India. But one thing is certain, if a war broke out, it will certainly destroy both the economies. China’s economy is 5 times that of India that means China will lose more than what India has. India is a “Young Country” whereas China is “not so young” these days, the average age of a Chinese is around 37 years. It would be easy for India to rebuild a war torn country as compared to China when the west will take India’s side.

Well, assume India-China don’t use nuclear stuff. That’s the problem with war, nothing is certain, we don’t know what kind of stand will China’s friend Pakistan will take, we don’t know how will America react, how will Japan, South-Korea will react. That’s why it is said, “Who knows what happens tomorrow, it’s a mystery”. War is not a child’s play that Chinese state run media is babbling continuously, Indians can only hope that people in power won’t be as stupid as the state run media journalists are. If they have a doubt over effects of a nuclear bomb on a country, they can ask Japan. India-China War is not a computer game, but real human lives at stake, Chinese leadership should act like an adult and not randomly call for a military conflict, over 2.5 billion lives at stakes here.

India-China ties turning sour due to Chinese Aggression over the disputed territory of Dhoklam.

Why is China so aggressive on Dhoklam issue? Is the Dhoklam area, which is covered in snow for almost 8 months in a year is important from the Chinese perspective to fight a war with India? Why Chinese Communist party and Chinese media is threatening India for a war? These are some important issues. There are several reasons for these:

  • The way India stand-up to Bhutan and supported Bhutan to face the Chinese aggression is making China more anxious in South-China sea dispute; India has been almost silent on the illegal Chinese man-made islands and its claim on SCS. It will encourage countries like Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, and South-Korea to raise a stand against China.
  •  America has been wary of China and its role in providing nuclear technology to its little brother “North-Korea” thus increasing instability in Korean Peninsula. America is trying to strengthen India to stand against China in Asia.
  • India has boycotted OBOR conference because of India’s sovereignty issue on CPEC.
  • Even a non-claimant Southeast Asian state such as Thailand is happy with India standing up to Chinese Hegemony, causing more trouble to China.
Hawkish  Chinese State-run Global Times calling for a War between India-China.

Indian media is dancing to the Communist Party Propaganda songs, want to know why? Because they either don’t know the Chinese propaganda tactics or they just ignore some basic facts.

  •  The People’s Republic of China had always believed in propaganda and they try to hide everything from the Chinese citizens, hide the truth about Tiananmen Square massacre by PLA. So you cannot blindly follow their propaganda, have a narrative.
  • PLA’s recently held 90th anniversary showcased its war machines in the parade. Every country was looking at China because of Dhoklam issue, why would communist party let the chance slip away to spread its so called military might and they were quite successful. Indian media took the bait and covered, analyzed it again and again. They deliberately made it a huge circus so that it can put psychological pressure on India and her people including Indian forces. Though PLA was looking very creepy.
  • China doesn’t have a military, as PLA place their loyalty to serve Communist party and not to the nation. Whereas Indian Army has loyalty to the Constitution and the country, unlike PLA.
  • Chinese military or PLA hasn’t fought a major war in few decades.
  • About 80% of the Chinese trade passes through Malacca Strait, India can choke it anytime it wants.

In the light of the above facts, what should India do? Should India be relaxed then? The obvious answer is NO because we must learn history’s bitter lessons of 1962 when Jawahar Laal Nehru was so drowned in India-China friendship that India faced with a humiliating defeat due to the surprise attack by Chinese Army and India lost Aksai Chin to the People’s Republic of China. India can do following things, though they must be critically analyzed.

  1. First of all, India needs to shrug off fear and stand firm to PLA, Indian citizens and government should boost the morale of the forces facing PLA at Dhoklam and other places.
  2. China proposed mediation in Kashmir conflict between India-Pakistan, India should raise the issue of Chinese human right abuses in Tibet and call for freedom of Tibet from Chinese oppression at various forums.
  3. India should scrap “One China Policy” as there are two China for the time being, i.e. The People’s Republic of China (Mainland China) and The Republic of China (Taiwan).
  4. Conduct naval exercises with USA- Japan, while maintaining a balance with Russia.
  5. Support Japan, South-Korea, and Vietnam on South-China Sea.
  6. Put pressure on North-Korea, it will further increase pressure on China.
  7. India should steadily increase its economic power as well as the military power to fight in future.
  8. Focus on ties with India’s neighborhood.

Looking at Chinese media and the articles written by State-run media and Indian media following them blindly, it’s unfortunate and childish.

China’s oppression of Muslims- The real threat to Islam

0

America, Europe, India. If rabble-rousers in the Muslim world are to be believed, these are the biggest enemies of Islam. Extremists in Muslim countries, ranging from Iran to Pakistan to Egypt, often portray this triumvirate as oppressors of Muslims. They do this in order to whip up hysteria, build mass support for their own divisive agendas, and justify acts of terrorism.

Of course history and the current political situational provide a convenient context for this narrative of distrust and hatred, and that gets exploited to fullest. What is often overlooked is the fact that these are multicultural and pluralistic democracies where Muslims enjoy full freedom to practice their faith and express themselves. Yes there are social conflicts, but there is no existential threat to Islam and its way of life in these countries.

Under the Trump presidency, the US is going through a bit of a crisis with its multicultural identity. But this has made a lot of minorities feel insecure and not just Muslims. That still does not take away that the US has been a great host to Muslims for many years.

Across the US, Europe, and India, mosques and institutes of Islamic learning operate without restriction. In India, Muslim festivals are observed in all their spirit and many of them are public holidays. Muslim sensitivities are given due consideration, and some would argue, more than what is required. Ramzan is observed with all due respect and regard. Mosques are free to broadcast their daily prayers over loudspeakers. The government clears out major public spaces to make room for Eid prayers.

Madrassas are free to teach and universities like Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University are bastions of Islamic intellectual thought. Muslims in all these countries are productive members of society, contributing to it and enriching it in many ways, across all walks of life.

The fundamentalist rabble-rouser chooses to ignore these ground realities and paints a grim picture of Islam being under siege, exploiting the social divisions in these multicultural societies and using the sporadic instances of conflict to exhort the faithful to rise in jihad against these countries and restore Muslim pride.

And who are the Muslim countries, especially Pakistan, allying with in this quest to restore Muslim pride? On the face of it, China the emerging giant in geopolitics is precisely the kind of power the Muslim world needs on its side. It has something to offer to everyone. Weapons with no strings attached, cheap mobile phones, massive investment in infrastructure, and a UN Security Council veto are all the perks that can be had from a close relationship with China.

History is replete with instances of nations with diametrically opposing values and viewpoints allying against a common enemy. Capitalist America and Communist Soviet Union fought alongside in the war against Nazi Germany, only to fall out to become the bitterest rivals once the common enemy was defeated.

Unlike the US with its deep involvement in the conflicts of the Middle East and India’s close historical links to Islam, China comes with little baggage. The common people of countries like Pakistan therefore have little direct exposure to the Chinese way of life.

Of all the major countries in the world, China is the most repressive towards Islam. Unbeknownst to many, China quietly and silently works towards suppressing the voice of its small Muslim minority. Because it is a totalitarian society, unlike the US and India, it is able to keep this oppression under the radar with no human rights groups and liberal intellectuals rising in protest and highlighting the atrocities. In addition, the world community is also inexplicably silent on the matter. Islamic fundamentalists who rail against perceived injustices against Muslims in democratic countries are completely silent when it comes to China.

What China is doing to the Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang province, pales in comparison to anything Israel might be doing to the Palestinians. For example, China has banned beards and veils in the province. They have put in place laws that actively discriminate against the Uighurs. In fact, the Uighur population growth has been controlled through various policies and incentives offered to the Hans. Contrast this with India’s firm adherence to Article 370 that forbids non-Kashmiris from purchasing property in Kashmir.

In yet another act of selective violation of civil liberties, Muslims are now required to install surveillance apps on their phones. This allows authorities to monitor their online activity and watch out for any signs of dangerous behavior.

China has also banned Islamic names and instituted measures that make fasting virtually impossible during Ramadan. All these actions are pointers to China’s deep discomfort with Islam.

Pakistan is not merely looking the other way in the face of this oppression of Muslims. It is actively in bed with China. It is sad that enmity and mistrust of India, a country with which Pakistan shares deep cultural affinity and shared roots, drives Pakistan to maintain very close ties with China, a country that abhors Islam, a pillar of its foundation.

This is a grave injustice to its founding principles of Pakistan. After all, it is a nation that was created in the name of Islam. Islamic values are central to the country’s existence. It often regards itself as the defender of Islam, the owner of the largest army in the Muslim world and the sole Islamic nuclear power.

The whole world, especially the leading Muslim countries must take note of this systemic oppression. If they don’t raise their voice against it, a time will come when China will bring this oppression to their doorsteps. China is making deep inroads into Pakistan. It is already demanding special privileges and protections for its investments and citizens. The mistrust and “otherness” is amply evident. If its past conduct is an indication, as it strengthens its hold on Pakistan, it will inevitably start pushing back against Islamic ways and start enforcing its own values. That may bring some much-needed modernity to Pakistani society and economy, but at the very steep cost of the destruction of its centuries old culture and traditions.

An enemy’s enemy is a friend no doubt, but Pakistan would do well to determine where its real longer-term existential threat emanates from.

Mr Prime Minister needs to focus on Agriculture, Job creation and Women Safety and he will be 10/10

I am not a political analyst. I don’t look at politics the way these so called analysts look. But I have a very simple criteria to judge the performance of a government like the most of other Indians. It’s very simple. How much work they have done for the betterment of this country. It’s the same way my boss looks at my performance in a specific year when it comes to appraisal. So, I guess it’s the universal way to judge the performance of anybody whether it’s an individual or a government. Mr. Narendra Modi took charge as India’s PM on May, 2014. He came to power with so many expectations. Under UPA India had seen very bad days. If I am not exaggerating it, India had seen her worst days under Dr Manmohan Singh. Indians had lost hope and its very dangerous for any nation. Without hope there is no point of existing.

Recent victory in Uttar Pradesh is enough to tell us, that Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains India’s most popular political leader. Many controversies took place in the last 3 years but they were bound to happen. The ideology of BJP makes them vulnerable. Saffron gangs, cow vigilantes, and many other small groups are creating problems for this government. Next elections are in 2019 and we don’t have anyone else who can stand against the juggernaut of Mr. Modi. And I do think he deserves a second term. This government has done so many great under his leadership and that’s why 73% Indians showed faith in this government (according to a recent survey by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the global polling giant Gallup). India topped the global list of citizens’ confidence in governments based on a Forbes Report. Lets talk about the positive and negative of this government.

Transportation on almost every channel (road, train, air) has improved. But NDA couldn’t control the rail accidents.

Power sector is doing good so far. UDAY scheme is just doing fantastic. I didn’t know before that this many villages were not electrified. Congress had screwed India in the last 6 decades.

Swachh Bharat has been the best initiative by this government according to me. NDA is trying hard to eliminate the open defecation and its very commendable.

Foreign policy has been great so far. Trip to Israel was a bold step. Not just with Europe or USA, but Modi has been really wonderful with our small neighbours like Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh too. One thing which has gone bad is the relationship with China and Pakistan despite Modi’s trip to both countries. The relationship with one of our oldest friends Russia, is also in doldrums.

Agriculture is the most important and close to my heart sector, as I belongs to Haryana. Conditions of farmers haven’t improved in last 3 years or so. Decline in wholesale prices of vegetables and pulses has dented farm incomes. I am not a huge fan of waiving loans, which looks like a trend in India. A loan waiver in Uttar Pradesh led to a moral hazard problem and delay in repayment of loans in other states. Acute drought in southern states led to a spike in farm suicides. I work as a data scientist but I know one thing, no point of talking about big technology firms and space missions if we can’t solve the basic problems of our food provider, the farmers. Anybody in India can tell why farmers commit suicide but still no-one has done anything to stop this curse. That’s the one sector I am very disappointed in with this government.

NDA has neglected the forest and wildlife sectors. Decisions are pending on a national forest policy, definition of forests, inviolate forest areas and a national wildlife action plan. And Ganga clean-up (Namami Gange) is yet to gather momentum.

Demonetization has been revolutionary reform for our country but nothing done so far when it comes to black money stashed abroad. The deficit has been trimmed, subsidies have been rationalized and better directed which have helped to make money work better. Tax reforms are epitomized by the GST. Great step.

Job creation is one area where the Narendra Modi government has not fared according to expectations. Against the Modi government’s promise to create 1 crore jobs every year, labour bureau records presents a dismal picture. In the last three years about 5 lakh jobs were created, which is a cause of worry. But, the Narendra Modi government may sit satisfied especially when the opposition is reeling under sustained political pressure from the BJP, which is functioning like an election winning machine. This is a worry because growth without employment is not good for a country which prides itself on a demographic dividend.

The external environment has been favourable in terms of oil prices which have led to a comfortable current account deficit. This has helped to stabilize the rupee with the Indian currency becoming one of the best performing ones. With foreign investment flows being very active, notwithstanding moderation in FPI, the forex reserves have crossed the $ 375 billion mark.

There are problems within the NDA: the Peoples Democratic Party (Jammu and Kashmir), Shiv Sena (Maharashtra) are not good people to work with. They haven’t contribute anything to NDA other than few MLAs and negative publicity. Shiv Sena is nothing more than a group of hooligans and PDP, they just want to be in power and nothing else. They don’t care about Kashmir at all.

In the end, I want to say that Mr. Modi need to focus more on Agriculture, Job creation and Women safety. If he can improve these three things, trust me even his worst enemies will appreciate and will vouch for him in upcoming elections. Otherwise winning 2019 doesn’t look like a big issue because  there is no body in opposition.

Why row Vande Mataram now when no Muslim had any objection when it was accepted as national song?

0

Vande Mataram, written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya was unanimously accepted as the national song on 24th January 1950 by the Constituent Assembly. There was not an iota of protest from any corner of constituent assembly against it’s acceptance as a national song.

The Muslim and Hindu leaders of that time, who were actually secular; not by profile but by character had no problem with this song. The song has a special resemblance to the Indian Freedom Fight as when the infamous viceroy Lord Curzon divided Bengal in 1905 ostensibly to wedge a communal gap, Vande Mataram had become an epitome of unity and was sung by Hindus and Muslims alike to prove the extent of their cohesiveness. There was nothing communal in the song then, there is nothing communal in the song now.

Some people, who say that Vande Mataram goes against the tenants of Islam are the ignorant species of the highest order. Vande Matram exemplifies the spirit of patriotism towards one’s country and Islam also teaches the same; to love the land and soil where you live. Vande Mataram, as a part of morning assembly is sung in many schools. I have done my entire studies from D.A.V Public School, where the national song is sung in morning assembly and everybody, including Muslim teachers and students sing the song with full enthusiasm. Does the issuance of fatwa by some people saying that chanting of “Vande Mataram” is un-Islamic therefore invalidates the religion of my friends and schoolmates who sung the national song?

These people boast about the freedom of religion guaranteed to them under Fundamental Rights. But, as Indians, don’t they have equal responsibility towards their fundamental duties too? Article 51-A (b) of the Fundamental duty, as inserted in the 42nd amendment of the Constitution (apparently the same amendment when the word secular was added to the preamble) says, “It shall be the duty of every citizen to cherish and follow the noble ideas that inspired our national struggle for freedom”. Vande Mataram was one of the songs that inspired our struggle for freedom as I quoted above when it became a revolutionary song during the Swadeshi movement during Bengal partition. The people who issue Fatwa denigrate the status of a “National Song” by giving it a religious colour. They also virtually intimidate the normal people who have no issues in chanting Vande Mataram by issuing threats of “social boycott”against them.

There are some issues that should be kept above religion, caste, creed, costume, custom, culture. Religion is a private affair between a person’s conscience and his god. Praising the nation won’t invite any ire from the god. God is not intolerant like us, he is sacrosanct and receptive. Religious leaders, rather than dictating their preferences on the followers should take steps for social harmony and cohesion.

Fatwas- The voice of intolerance

0

Issuing fatwas has become fashionable nowadays. If a Mufti wants to gain some popularity, all he has to do is issue a fatwa against a popular celebrity like A.R Rahman. The TRP-hungry media news channels immediately go on a rampage of inviting political party spokespersons, journalists, religious leaders and commentators to debate on the fatwas. The media is good at making a mountain out of a molehill in such matters. In this way, the media is only fuelling the Muftis to attain exaggerated heights of popularity, instead of ignoring their fatwas, like how the individuals concerned also do.

According to a recent news article, a Mufti from an influential Muslim body in Bihar called Imarat-e-Shariya, issued a fatwa against the State Minority Affairs minister Khurshid Alam. This time the reason was that Khurshid Alam shouted “Jai Shri Ram” in the state assembly on 28 July 2017, the same day when the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, won the trust vote. The fatwa says that Khurshid Alam has no place in the Muslim community and that his Nikah (marriage) has become null or void. While the minister has avoided and largely ignored the fatwa, the Mufti later on issued a statement saying that the fatwa was pronounced in a personal capacity. Why then, at all, issue a fatwa in the first place, if it is of no use at all to the public?

In Islam, a ‘fatwa’ is a non-binding statement or pronouncement by a qualified Islamic scholar (i.e. a Mufti) that is offered as an “expert’s opinion”. It need not be acted upon, however, it is usually taken as an expert’s opinion, resulting in it having more weight than a random opinion from any ordinary follower of Islam. Hence, in an ideal situation, the Mufti has an important responsibility of issuing meaningful fatwas that help the Muslim society to reform and change according to time and place. For example, in Indonesia, Islamic clerics issued a fatwa banning illegal hunting and wildlife trafficking. Such a fatwa, even though it is not legally binding, is progressive and has the possibility of enacting real change in a country with a majority of population being Muslims.

In a secular and democratic country like India, however, we have only witnessed a slew of silly fatwas issued by questionable Muftis, which have been of no help in bringing about reformation in Islam. While today we have many leftist liberals questioning the intolerance of Hindutva supporters, where are these liberals when such ridiculous fatwas are being issued? Why are they not questioning the intolerance of the Muftis in India? While many of these Muftis are clearly against secularism and democracy, why is there still appeasement politics being played by the politicians and the paid-media? What difference does it make in letting your religious opinion to be known to the public?

Issuing fatwas does not only indicate the height of intolerance amongst the Muslim clerics, it also exposes their blatant disregard for a person’s freedom of speech and expression. Fatwas restrict a person’s freedom of speech and expression and to a certain extent, it is even a violation of human rights. Najima Bibi, who was the first Muslim woman to contest the Manipur elections, has been issued many fatwas in her 15 years of working as an activist. She has been denied the use of a local village pond for drawing water and most recently, she has been denied a burial space. People associating with her and communicating with her have also been warned that they will face the same fatwa. Such non-binding “opinions” issued by the Maulvis can have potentially devastating consequences for Najima if she were not a strong-willed woman who largely ignored the fatwas issued against her.

Fatwas are not to be misconstrued and allowed to be continued as part of the “freedom to practice one’s religion” clause. What the fatwas are doing is that they are dividing this nation into believers and non-believers, just like how their Quran does. In June 2017, a congregation of Muslims in Tamil Nadu issued a fatwa against a woman’s father for approaching the High Court to obtain an interim stay on the Triple Talaq pronounced by her husband, citing that the father should not have approached the Kafirs (i.e. the High Court Judges) for matters relating to the Sharia. This fatwa blatantly denigrated the judiciary and the sanctity of the law. The divisive attitude, the “them-versus-us” mentality and the intolerance of the Muslim clerics, who dictate the Sharia, are largely the reasons why fatwas are unwelcome and not needed. The media should not be giving any publicity and unwanted attention to such Muftis.

To safeguard democracy; India needs a credible Opposition

0

“Doomed are the kingdoms who are ruled by ruthless benevolent dictators”. This phrase signifies the exact situation of democracy in India today. One side are the benevolent modern-day Chanakyas of the BJP stitching merciless plots and undermining every mandate of democracy to satisfy their greed for power. Other side is the crumbled grand old Indian National Congress which for long has harboured mini-dynasties and now looked upon as the flag-bearers of nepotism; lacking of proper courage and advice; struggling for its existence. What happened in Bihar is the worst murder of democracy so far and this can go on if the opposition is not brought to its senses and it crumbles more and more as is being witnessed now.

The megalomaniacs and 24×7 politicians of BJP-RSS  duo are giving sleepless nights to the opposition causing its slow and steady death. But it is really wrong and unworthy to blame the ruling party for the death of opposition. Darwin’s rule “Survival of the fittest” applies in each and every walk of life. Those who are fit will always survive. Those who cant protect themselves are bound to get extinct. Opposition of India; I think is more responsible for its own decline than any other thing. Since 2014; the issues which the opposition has raised are suicidal and with its stupidity and insecurities if it ceases to exist; opposition will be sole responsible to throw India at power hungry pack of wolves who know no boundaries.

India needs a credible opposition to counter all the ills and bads of the government and safeguard each and every voice of India so that democracy exists. Today’s Opposition is merely a pack of some insecure, stupid persons going on with their personal attacks at the centre and thus loosing their remaining mandate. Opposition needs to introspect itself; give up personal difference; and come together not for themselves but for the sake of democracy of India.

Nitish Kumar accession to throne: Opportunism or prudence

On 26th July, 2017, the Bihar Chief Minister resigned from his post or in his words he listened to the “call of his conscience”. He broke the grand alliance that comprised RJD, JD(U) and Congress. It seems that it had been difficult for Nitish Kumar ji to decide between Dharma to do honest politics and Karma to keep the alliance intact. Even though the clear signals were given to RJD yet it was bent upon saving the Deputy Chief Minister post of Tejaswi Yadav. I think resigning from the post of Chief Minister was the right decision taken by him. It was also prudent of him joining the hands with his erstwhile partner, BJP, as he has not faced this sort of trouble with that alliance. Today Nitish Kumar proved the majority with 131 MLAs on his side whereas RJD plus got the support of 108 MLAs.

The relationship within grand alliance got bitter as the raids on the companies associated with Lalu Prasad Yadav were started. The raids were conducted, first by Income Tax Department and then CBI, for the allegation of Benami land deals during Lalu ji’s tenure as the Central Railway Minister. The alleged Benami property was worth Rs 1,000/- crore and the raids were carried out in Delhi and Gurgaon, in this connection. Also, the son of Lalu Prasad Yadav and the Deputy CM of Bihar was under the scanner of CBI. In one of the articles published in Indian Express it was mentioned that Hema Yadav, another daughter of Lalu Prasad, had the Benami land plot in Patna, which worth Rs 62 Lakh. This plot was gifted by one Lalan Chaudhary, who was the resident of Siwan and also a BPL cardholder.

Apart from this, the Enforcement Directorate also conducted raids on three Delhi farmed houses, which were owned by Lalu’s daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Misa Bharti and her husband, in a money laundering case, worth 8,000 crore. Now, the ED has registered a case against the Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family members in money laundering case. The only shield that RJD is using is making hue and cry about the political vendetta, by the right wing RSS and BJP, to silence the voice of Lalu Prasad, in which Congress has also joined him. Though I do feel that it might have been so but such tactics have been played by every political party against the other.

Also, there must have been some truth in it that allowed the law enforcement agencies to close it on RJD Chief and his family. But this event has also brought to the forth the most unfortunate part that the law enforcement agencies are not empowered or dare to take action against the incumbent government. This helplessness of theirs is quite visible in many cases and only such political vendetta, quote unquote, disclose the corruption that has been done during the tenure of the politicians in power.

The second issue that has been doing the round again is about the BJP and RSS saffronisation agenda. I feel all the other political party wanted to show up that they here to save the nation’s secular fabric. They are even showing people that their coalition is largely forged to desist the communal forces, which is largely the BJP and RSS, in the country. But it is important to mention here that though there are a good number of regional parties like SP, BSP, RJD, TMC etc. and national party like Congress, who have been using religion and caste to get the votes in their favour yet their secularist credentials are unquestionable.

Therefore, I believe that all the political parties are having their hidden agendas and creating differences between the communities would not be a problem for them, if it serves their purpose. I also feel that people are now voting for two reasons- first, they have lost confidence in an old political party like congress, who has still been depending on one dynasty and the second is that they have had shown trust in the incumbent Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi. People have been voting the parties to the power in clear majority and if any party is unable to perform, its doomsday is near. I do believe that the present government would meet the same fate, if it doesn’t deliver on its promises.

Coming back to the political turmoil in Bihar I must say that the decision of Nitish Kumar has sent ripples in the political circles across the country but I believe that going with BJP was the right step taken by the CM of Bihar. The grand alliance was formed to counter the increasing strength of the BJP, or in more precise sense the rise of Shri Narender Modi, as one of the biggest political parties that is experiencing the winning streak in most of the elections across the country, since 2014.

Though alliance was forged for stopping BJP yet it was aptly clear that the governance should run on the basis of freedom from corruption and nepotism. It was surprising how two heavyweights, Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav, of Bihar politics, who are very different from each in their political approach, have come to the common table. Going along with RJD was a bold step for JD(U). It seems that the alliance was forged due to personal disliking of Nitish Kumar towards the Prime Minister yet continuing with RJD had definitely been a bitter experience for him. The present break in the alliance is the direct consequence of the accommodative politics adopted in Bihar.

Now, Nitish Kumar ji has once again been coronated to the throne of the Bihar CM in less than 24 hours. Though some dissenting voices came from his own party, in Bihar as well as the Kerala unit of JD (U), for his decision to forge an alliance with BJP yet he has comfortably sailed through it. He has faced the litmus test and shown the majority in the Bihar Assembly. Although many people, in political circles, are calling him an opportunist but I consider him a man with integrity and the one who thinks for people first. I consider him one of the most respectable CMs and man of words. He has shown his political maturity and prudence by joining the hands with BJP for the development of Bihar. I believe that his new allying partner will toe the same lines on which he is going ahead. Also, he will definitely take a stand, if such corrupt practices come to his notice in future.

In defense of the Military Tank display at JNU

0

JNU is back in the news again, this time for a positive reason though. The JNU VC M. Jagadesh Kumar has made a request to the Centre for a static display of a military tank in the campus, which he believes “will remind thousands of students about the great sacrifices and valour of our Indian Army”.

Of course, there has been cheers, with many pointing out various static display of aircraft and tanks dotting the country, be it at universities such the Jamia Millia or even schools such as the Lawrence School, Lovedale.

But as expected, there has been opposition from some quarters, with one article making a comparison of this proposed display to the usage of tanks in China’s Tianamen Square. Some have expressed a fear that the static display may lead to jingoism, and such a display also symbolically tramples free speech and dissent.

Is the exhibition of a tank or any military equipment the harbinger of a military, jingoistic state? Is it a weapon of intimidation of young minds? The following arguments debunk that military symbols and civil society values are incompatible, especially in India.

Our Defense Services, be it the Army, the Air Force or the Navy are volunteer based, unlike at China, where military service is compulsory by law, or at North Korea where there is no escape from conscription. Our Services have a perennial shortage of officers and personnel in the other ranks. The latest figures show a shortage of 9000 officers and 45,000 personnel in other ranks. The national security scenario is not exactly rosy, and the nature of warfare is changing. The Services need the best talent to secure our borders and national interest. An exhibition of a tank, a submarine or an aircraft in a university will drive that zeal to volunteer.

Military has historically driven innovation, research and development. While it can be argued that the offshoot has been weapons for destruction, the other side of the coin is collateral benefits of such research. The German V2 rockets which rained over London during the WW2 also laid the foundations of future space programs. The ARPANET, which was a US Department of Defense project flowered into the Internet. Military armament and equipment therefore are a product of the best technologies at the time of their design. Exhibiting such equipment gives a glimpse of the technology of the present or past, and inspires young minds to drive it further. Even an exhibition of the 1960s vintage HF-24 Marut, India’s first indigenously developed fighter aircraft will inspire young students to build something better.

Training in the services is tough, and pushes young men and women to their physical and emotional limits. Successfully completing this training, arms a young person with remarkable confidence, which will stand with him or her, in peace and in war. Piloting an aircraft, navigating a submarine, or handling a tank require skill, courage, equanimity and above all discipline. The armament displays symbolize these finest qualities of a soldier, and are apt displays to enthuse young minds to take up the challenge to inculcate those qualities.

If the premise is that anything related to the military is bad, and if there is a contemptuous allusion to bullying free speech and civil society, then the argument holds no weight. For long, from 1948, we have the National Cadet Corps (NCC), again a purely voluntary corps, at schools and colleges. Generations of cadets of have been trained in small firearms, drill, gliding, basic seamanship etc. More importantly, they have been imbibed with leadership skills, and the spirit of national integration. There is absolutely no evidence of any detrimental effect on free speech, dissent and all the nice sounding things being fought for by the left at institutions such as the JNU, due to the NCC. Clearly the NCC has contributed to creating a set of disciplined and adventurous youth with the spirit of patriotism, rather than creating a set of society misfits masquerading as radical student leaders.

Display of military armament reminds us of all those who to use the cliché “who gave their today, for our today”. Woe betide a nation that does not remember its heroes and their sacrifice. As much as we remember our freedom fighters, we ought to remember the sentinels of our borders and their deeds. It is not statistics, it is not dry news reports which convey the message, it is their stories retold a countless time and their symbols which will remain etched in the collective national memory. That is the least we can do. And having these symbols at institutions of learning is the apt thing we can do, to teach our next generation.
