Fake patriotism: Lessons from Jinnah’s life

0

In March 1936, Muhammad Ali Jinnah declared in Lahore: “I assure you that India’s interest is and will be sacred to me and nothing will make me budge an inch from that position.” He asked Muslims to “prove that their patriotism is unsullied and that their love of India and her progress is no less than that of any other community in the country.” In 1946, on 18 August, during the Direct Action unleashed by Muslim League, he was declaring that “the caste Hindu Fascist Congress,” wanted to “dominate and rule over Mussalmans and other minor communities of India.”

We see stark parallels of Jinnah in today’s India. From the leaders of rabidly communal AIMIM to many Muslim leaders of other parties, from the firebrand Maulanas to the Jihadi army in social media, from certain ‘journalists’ to unrepentant Jamatis one can see the same pattern repeat again. They claim to be patriotic, to abide by the constitution and to be paragons of secularism. Look a bit deeper and all that talk of patriotism, flag waving, constitutionalism and secularism is revealed to be just another tactic to fool the onlookers and build sympathy for their unjust cause in minds of confused Indians. The narrative of “Caste Hindu Fascist BJP” who wants to dominate over “minorities of India” is reemerging. Only this time, it is taking less time than it took last time. The only logical next step is : “As we cannot safely live in India, we need another country”. This is indeed seen in a few statements of such activists already.

The Congress in 1930s and 1940s committed a grave mistake. It showed weakness in face of fanaticism and impossible demands. It appeased Muslim League first by accepting separate electorates in 1916 and then continued till the 1940s when Gandhi and Congress accepted negotiation with Muslim League. They should have shown strength and even if it meant a Civil War, it would have cost less in lives than the tragic partition. They had the muscle power and British were anyways in a hurry to leave.

The BJP has a historic role to play today. It can either appease the fanatics and doom the country again or show the strength and deal with the issue with an iron hand. As of now it has not backed down on its steps to reform Muslim society{Triple Talaq} or on pro Hindu issues. Let us hope it continues and the government also deals strictly with lockdown violators and other lumpen elements.

Forgotten scriptures – The Vedas

0

There is no culture or civilization in the world history which has not practiced any religion. When we study the ancient history of the oldest and the earliest civilizations or culture of the world, we do not find exact dates or the traces of the events with accuracy. But with the help of preserved manuscripts, stone inscriptions, artifacts, objects, and archaeological findings, we can find high-level traces of the civilization and its religion. Few of such examples of the very oldest religions of the world are like Taoism in Chinese, Sumerian religion, Zoroastrianism of Iran, etc. Similarly for most of the religions, we find a lot of information about the founders of religion, beginning period, whereabouts, background, etc. And all this has a major role in the religious beliefs, prophecies, transcendental or spiritual elements,  practice, its core values, etc.

Taking all this into consideration, if we check the oldest records of Hinduism, it is very different to equate it with all other religions.

In the Indian subcontinent the oldest scriptures, sacred texts of Hinduism were not found in any written form or carved on stones. The scriptures of Hinduism was not recorded in any papyrus material. In Hinduism, we do not find any founder or any beginning dates unlike Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism. We do not find any whereabouts of beginning of Hinduism.

What we find about Hinduism is a vast amount of scriptures and texts that were preserved by great seers for many-many centuries and millenniums. These seers/Rishis safeguarded the sacred heritage and vast amount of knowledge from century to century in their memory and heart. It was passed through many generations by the Gurus (teachers) to their pupils without even writing them. Which is almost impossible if we think in the present day, keeping in a notice about the amount of text and the complexity of the language. And it was passed from generation to generation without any slightest alteration and modification in it. This knowledge was later organized by the great seers and scholars and known as Vedas (वेद).

The Vedas are the oldest sacred text available not only in Hinduism but to mankind, as far as known till date. That can be a reason, it is said

‘Anantha vai Vedaah’ (अनंता वै वेदा:)

Means, Vedas are infinite. Vedas are endless and Infinite. The knowledge in Vedas has neither the beginning nor the ending. As this sacred knowledge was deep-rooted thousands of years back. There are no great scriptures than Vedas. There could more interpretations varying on the degree of the scholarly person who must be translating or interpreting it but it is the text of divine knowledge. All other scriptures are derived from the Vedas. Vedas are also called as Anādi (अनादि). Anadi means the thing which always existed even before the time started and will remain forever. Which means it is having no beginning or end. It is eternal.

‘Veda apaurusheya’  (वेद अपौरुषेय)

The Vedas are ultimate truths and not created or composed by a person. They are created by Brahman (Supreme Being). So the origin of Vedas cannot be traced. Since there are some Mantras that are associated with the names of sages, we may inference that they may have been composed of them. But it is not so as a matter of fact. “apaurusheya” means not the work of any man.

Vedas are the most authoritative of all the text in Hinduism. In all other Hinduism texts like Puranas, Bhagwat Gita and epics like Mahabharata, Ramayana also talks about the greatness and essence of Vedas. Bhagwat Gita is one of the most popular texts in Hinduism and also most translated, published scripture in Hinduism. Bhagwat Gita is composed in Sanskrit and it means Song of God. In Bhagwat Geta, Lord Krishna himself says

that:

वेदानां सामवेदोऽस्मि देवानामस्मि वासव: |

इन्द्रियाणां मनश्चास्मि भूतानामस्मि चेतना ||

Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10, Verse 22

I am the Sāma Veda amongst all the Vedas available, I am Indra amongst all the celestial gods.

What really sad is, we are not much aware of our Vedas. How many among us know Vedas? Most of us do not know anything more than- names of the four Vedas; what else…. it is the oldest scriptures known to mankind; it is written around 1500 BC by Aryans; it is written in Vedic Sanskrit. We know about Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Mahabharata thanks to all the available sources like- our daily soap televisions, mythology books, stories from our grandparents.

There are some Myths around why people not studying Vedas, few common answers are:

1.) Vedas and Upanishads are difficult to understand and the only great guru, teacher, Sanskrit scholars can only understand it.

2.) Vedas and Upanishads are boring. Mostly it talks about how to praise God, nature or answer of questions like who am I, what is the purpose of my life, etc.

But the question comes, have we ever tried to understand the essence of Vedas/Upanishads, the most important fundamental and the authoritative scriptures/element of Hinduism?

Covid-19 Outbreak exposes prevailing Hinduphobia

The world has come to a staggering halt, countries have sealed their borders, factories are shut, events are cancelled and much more. Not only has the Coronavirus Pandemic exposed how fragile we have become, but also our arrogance. We still think the lifestyle we so proudly  boast about has no role to play in these kind of outbreaks. Covid-19 is not just one outbreak, even if we look at just the twenty years of this millennium, we would right away see that every other year there was a new virus identified and every two years WHO announced a virus outbreak to be a pandemic and a threat to the mankind.

Don’t believe me?

SARS-COV that caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome was  first isolated in 2003 and was right away called as a global threat. In the years following, two new Coronaviruses were isolated and were called out for causing deaths NL63 in 2004 and HKU1 in 2005. In 2006, the H5N1 virus was regarded to be the world’s largest pandemic threat and it continued causing its menace for the next two years.

In June 2009, the (WHO) declared the new strain of swine-origin H1N1 as a pandemic. This novel virus spread worldwide and had caused 18,500 laboratory-confirmed deaths with an estimated 151,700 to 575,400 deaths total by August of 2010. It is estimated that in the 2009 flu pandemic 11–21% of the then global population (of about 6.8 billion), or around 700 million to 1.4 billion people, contracted the illness—more in absolute terms than the Spanish flu pandemic. Actual fatalities ranged between 12,000 to 18,000. However, 9 members of the CDC estimated 150,000–575,000 possible fatalities worldwide. In August 2010, the WHO declared the swine flu pandemic officially over.

In 2013 MERS-COV or Middle East Respiratory Syndrom was called as causing the menace. During the same time another variant named H7N9 was isolated by the researcher and was called to have a potential to cause another pandemic.  The year 2014 was dedicated to Ebola and continued posing the threat to the existence of mankind for the next few years. In 2015 Zika virus was called out and posed a threat to the mankind for the next two years. In 2018 another virus from the Coronavirus family SADS-COV was isolated in China, it killed more than a quarter of pigs across the world.

And in 2019/20 SARS-COV-2 was isolated, which is now called as the global pandemic. And there are many many more viruses and other pathogens that are different than the flu virus, behave differently and transmit differently that were identified before 2000s but kept causing havoc, like HIV-AIDS etc.

Quite interestingly, every other pandemic was supposed to kill millions and was compared to the Spanish Flue of 1918 or Black Death or some other deadly pandemics in the past. And I am pretty sure it will continue like this in the future as well. Because there is no dearth of viruses around us. There are more than 200 coronaviruses that have been identified in Bats so far, and when and how these viruses spill over to the humans is not known.

The measures that we see in place now are reactive measures and are done after the crisis has stuck. How long can the world survive with these kind of lock-downs? How long can you keep up with this kind of social distancing?

Can there be a better, more lenient, proactive way of living so as to avoid these kind of predicaments?

In fact there is! There already is a feasible solution, and it is not at all required to re-invent the wheel. However, there are ego issues while following them.

[Disclaimer: The author has no intentions whatsoever to convince anyone to follow or not follow, believe or not believe in Sanatan Dharma popularly referred to as Hinduism. As such, the article should not be read by anyone who does follow, practice or believe in Sanatan Dharma. The article is written keeping in mind the readers who are like me and frequently come up with a question : “Where did we go wrong?” We as in the people who practice Hinduism.]

When China banned funerals for the infected bodies and asks for quick cremation. The world appreciates it. However, when Hindus cremate the dead, it has no science attached to it and this is just a ritual that causes air pollution. We have been cremating dead for ages. Moreover, it also explains the rituals like shaving the head, taking a shower, disinfecting the house once the men return from cremation “shamshan-ghat”. Why shaving head? Coronovirus is not the only virus that lives longer on hair as compared to skin. Maybe next time a feminist sees a discrimination in why women don’t get to cremate, you should ask them if they are ready to get rid of the long silky hair that they are so proud of. The funny part is, if the system was such that women had to go for cremation and get the head shaved, the very same feminists would have argued that Hinduism treats women as less, makes them cremate the dead and get their heads shaved, why can’t men do it? Maybe the evil energies and impurities associated with the shamshaan-ghat are these dangerous pathogens. But some saw the word “purity” in a sense that helped their agenda.

When the International community says Sun is a natural disinfectant, it makes all the sense. But when Hindus practice Surya-Namaskar in the morning it is religious and has no scientific value. Why in the morning? Because in the afternoon you get the side effects of the sun too, the strong UV rays etc. And by the way, have you heard of an exercise called Burpies? It is Surya-Namaskar the gym/modern way.

When the international community says wash hands regularly, it is hygiene. But when Hindus used to wash hands and feet before entering their homes, keeping slippers and shoes outside the house it was meaningless activity and had no scientific means. In fact the west does not even like to wash their asses, it is supposedly more hygienic.

When the international community talks about nutritious diet in order to improve the Immunity, food is important. But when Hindu households have proper cooked vegetarian food, it becomes primitive and waste of time. Have you seen some of the traditional Hindu meals? For ex – Salad, Roti, Sabzi, Daal, Chawal, plus lemon – a perfectly balanced meal. You don’t need to drown in Lemonade to improve your immunity, you just need some lemon drops but every day. That’s it. Have you been trying Ginger-Tulsi tea? Ginger helps in improving immunity. You must be tempted to say the Brits got us tea, if that is the case please google it more you will find the truth. If you think non-veg food is the best choice, good for you, but I would like to keep my distance, because the pathogens your body hosts, I am not immune to them and I would not like them those pathogens to take shelter in my body. As simple as that. I would write in detail about what all bacteria and virus non-veg eating people or people who work with live stock or people who even visit such a market carry with them. But some other time. Corona Virus is not the only virus that spilled over from an species other than human, there is a long list of zoonotic diseases.

When WHO explicitly mentions healthcare workers and people who work with livestock or animals are the groups of people that are at a higher risk of getting Corona Virus because of their professions, it is not discrimination and is absolutely fine. But when Hindus have their own social hierarchies based on different professions, it is discrimination. When WHO recommends Social distancing, (i.e. a set of non-pharmaceutical interventions or measures taken to prevent the spread of a contagious disease by maintaining a physical distance between people and reducing the number of times people come into close contact with each other. In short, reducing the probability that a given uninfected person will come into physical contact with an infected person, the disease transmission can be suppressed, resulting in fewer deaths), it is absolutely fine. But when Hindus say keep distance from people who come from different professional backgrounds, it is outright discrimination.

If you work in the meat market, the person who does not work with animals should maintain the necessary distance. If you work in a mortuary, the person who does not work with bodies should maintain some distance. If you work with the running drains, the ones who don’t should maintain some distance. It is not if something is above or beneath or good or bad, it is about the different lifestyles, different occupational hazards, different exposure to different pathogens and different immune systems. This social system in Hinduism is intentionally distorted and portrayed as inherently discriminatory as “caste system”. You might like it or dislike it but it works, works for all, works for long.

Varnas in Hinduism were based on the profession rather than the birth, castes are politically motivated concept that came into existence during British rule. There has to be a reason why, Hinduism, even though confined to India, never tried to expand forcefully, has been surviving for the longest number of years. Its not just luck.

We went wrong when we started discarding the rituals as meaningless activities. We went wrong when we started comparing Hinduism with other religions, because it is a way of life and not a religion.

Two years ago, I learnt an important lesson during my masters thesis: “never change a working system; unless you know the change you are making covers all the corner cases covered before“. How do you know that you covered all the corner cases? by regression testing during simulation. The problem is, life does not provide a simulation set up. So, if you don’t know what you are doing, either do what your grandparents and parents would have done and not what an Indian-liberal cum intellectual says or sit and research each and every aspect by yourself and then make the change.

The increasing number of such outbreaks is because people are changing a lot of things without thinking them through. A proactive system is better than a reactive one. Just before the lock-downs were in place, I did see some of my friends who used to call Hindus racists and caste-ists, washing hands by a soap after shaking hands with random guys. Should it be called as promoting untouchability? If you think Hindus were mean, racist, discriminatory and the system they successfully followed for millenniums was wrong, you are going to do the exact same thing if you want to survive. I bet you can’t just go and hug someone in an overcrowded hospital without a mask today. Can you? Are you discriminating? or are you a racist? No, and you shouldn’t do that.

Pathogens do not care if you are politically correct or liberal or broad-minded or if it is done with consent or anything, they just need a conducive way to transmit.

Although not relevant to corona virus outbreak, but do you know how many pathogens can crossover in one kiss (smooch)? There is a reason why pre-marital sex and extra-marital sex is considered bad in Hinduism. Just imagine the severity of the viruses that transmit when body fluids are exchanged. Are you able to imagine or should I give more details? Hint: there are 27 different types of virus (almost all more deadly than SARS-COV-2) that can transmit during the act. Can you name a few? Stick with one partner, and you might just live a happy, healthy, long and a meaningful life. Unless it is the only goal of your life.

By the way, that Wuhan-Shake (instead of hand-shake), the one that some are doing with their feet is a joke, you get the virus ten minutes later when you tie your laces, chapter closed. Instead say-
“Namaste”.

Thanks for reading, stay healthy!!

Janta Jagran: A way to illuminate 3Ds: Depression, Darkness and Downfall

As concern over the spread of COVID 19 is sweeping rapidly across the globe, it is injecting a considerable degree of stress, pain, fear and worry in the population at larger scale. In March 2020, the guidelines were released by WHO’s mental health department to address the issue related to public health. Through their guidelines, WHO advised people to avoid consuming news that made them anxious and should only pay attention to facts than rumors. Being the most effective way to contain the spread of the virus till now, Lockdown and quarantine has some psychological impact too, which elevates the rate of anxiety and stress. It is affecting many people’s usual activities and hence the case of self-harm and suicidal behavior is expected to rise.

Interestingly, on one side the world is struggling with hailed impact of virus and well-being of front line workers. Other side, existing mental health stress condition is a major concern for all the nations. Amid growing concern, PM Narendra Modi’s video appeal on 3rd April 2020 reflects this proactive approach towards the upcoming problem which is tremendously applauded by the Indian Citizen. In this appeal, he once again called for the unity by asking people of India to show solidarity for 9 minutes at 9 pm on 5th April 2020 by lighting Diyas, candles or holding up a mobile light. The request is taken well and as a result of it, we proved the world that we will win definitely as nationwide effort never loose but always win. The statistics is also exhibiting towards our manageable position to combat the virus.

Country like Italy which is only one tenth of our size, having one-twentieth population of ours, has more than 1.25 lacks cases. Whereas, in India, the total no of cases is 6000, out of which more than 40% cases came in last 6 days which is directly from Tablighi Jammat Markaj event. Even in Bhilwara (Rajasthan), where the no. of infected cases were high, there is not even a single case reported after 30th march, indicating, if we left apart the Tablighi Jammat case, the number of cases is very nominal and we Indian already winning in terms of flattening the curve.

However the move of Prime Minister of India was heavily criticized by the so called liberals and opposition parties. In response to PM request, Shashi Tharoor, a Congress M.P. said “listened to the Pradhan showman. Nothing about how to ease people’s pain, their burdens and their financial anxieties”. Similarly, reacting to Modi’s video, former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said “what we expect from you today was FAP II, a generous livelihood support packages for the poor”. The contrary opinions by the some senior politicians not only question their sensibility but invoke the need to unveil the other dimension of “DEEP JALAO” movement.

Firstly the Prime Minister of India does not operate in silos. He is not only continuously trying to resolve the issue through execution of economic packages & financial reforms but also come up as a leader who believes in motivating & inspiring his nation and give equal importance to their mental health (stress) also. The step becomes important if we see suicides linked to COVID 19 crisis which is showing no sign of abating. The relationship between isolation and suffering is perfectly illustrated in the book titled “The Plague” written by Albert Camus. In this novel, he aptly compares the plight of habitants with imprisonment which further affecting their mental health.

The result of American Psychiatric Association poll also pointing that 36% Americans have believed that pandemic has a severe impact on their health. Research by University of Sheffield and Ulster University also somewhat reflecting same result, observed a spike in the cases of depression and anxiety after the announcement of lockdown. The statement of Brightside co-founder Mimi Weinberg aggravated the concern. In his interview to Bloomberg he told “All of us that are struggling with the adjustment to new circumstances, some percentage will actually manifest into clinical anxiety or depression”. Undoubtedly, Pandemic have been associated with severe psychological consequences.

The death of K Balakrishan, a 50-year- old Indian and father of three children is the first suicide victim due to coronavirus epidemic. As the virus riddle with the fear, anxiety and chaos, Balakrishan after watching many videos became convinced that he had the virus. Resultantly he decided to commit suicide to save his family from the infection. Similarly, the suicide case of Emily Owen, 19 year old British who had neither diagnosed nor had a symptom with the virus indicates towards the distress in public. The list also includes Thomas Schaefer, the Finance Minister of Germany, has committed suicide after becoming deeply worried “how to cope up with the economic downfall from the virus”.

Sadly, the cases of suicide is not only limited to urban areas but it consist of a man from the village in Himachal Pradesh and migrant labor from UP who committed suicide even after tested negative for coronavirus. A recent death of 42 year old man from Gujarat in a quarantine periods spike towards the urgency to deal with the issue. Given the upcoming threat, the recent step of Narendra Modi seems as blessing in disguise. His several addresses are not only effective to bring solidarity among us but indicate his assurance that we are not alone in this battle.

In addition, the answer of a question to use a light to infuse positivity are well explained in all the religion and does not need any introductory remarks. Light has been always equated with positivity and motivation whereas darkness is also associated with evil. Either is a Veda’s, Bible or Quran in all the holy books, light recognized as first and foremost appearance of God. In Indian culture, light is a symbol of “TEJ” invoked as “Tamsoma Jyotirgamaya” which leads us towards light and give message of peace and positivity. There are reference of light in “Brahmarahasya Upanishad” also. It cited “Brahma is the light of lights. He is self-luminous. He is supreme light. He is infinite light. By this light all will shine”. Light is also equated as ATMA in Hindu scriptures where heart and mind can find peace by harmonized themselves with supreme light.

The Divine symbolized by light is not exception to Quran also. In Islam, Light referred as “Ayat-al-nur” which is one of the names for Allah out of the ninety nine such names. According to Al-Ghazali, “Allah alone is real, true light and beside then there is no light at all”. Similarly, Titus Burckhardt writes, “There is no more perfect symbol of divine unity than light”. Within Sufism also there is concept of Prophetic light called “Muhammadan Light”. In Buddhism, it is regarded as SUN and avenger of evil forces. The traditional chants of Buddhism also mentioned light as symbol to eradicate darkness: “with the lamp lit with camphor that dispels all darkness, I worship the perfectly enlightened one who is the lamp unto three worlds and is dispeller of darkness.  In catholic tradition also the light has a distinct status and symbolized Christ who said “I am the light of the world; the one who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have light and life”.

To conclude, the use of light to unite the nation which is known for its equal treatment to all citizens irrespective of their religion is highly appreciable and clearly indicates PM’s commitment to his vision “Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat” & “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vishwas”. Janta Jagran is not only an appeal to show solidarity but a call to introspect and strengthen our inner soul to fight with the conviction that we will win. From Janta Curfew to Janta Jagran, it’s crucial to note, they are some attempt by the government to assure we are not alone in the battle and seeks our support to break COVID 19 chain. It’s a time to come together for try collectively hard to win against the invisible enemy.

The need of hour is to keep petty politics aside and priorities the interest of nation first. Lighting of Diya and candle does not imply defeat of coronavirus but surely the positive vibes of 1.3 billion peoples are going to help us lot to regain the energy to fight back with Coronavirus without holding our mental health (stress) in stake.

Let us be

0

Having withstood the plunderers from the far north to resisting the wily from the west, perched on the threshold of continual existence, we wonder where we go from here. We have none as our custodian in a sinuous robe or with a flowing beard, nor do we have protectors with guns or philanthropists with bundles of green. We have no country for us or a government that speaks for us. The President of a super power can proclaim his faith to his august audience boldly, a Prime Minister from our neighbouring country can swear by his faith, but our Prime Minister and our leaders have to be discrete about it. The knowledge of our inception is unknown, but the threat of extinction looms ahead.

We are fewer than our trillion gods; perhaps that’s what saved us thus far. When some of our friends and relatives donned different identities, some for a more resourceful god, some for just the lure, all we did was shrug. There are also these atheists from our midst who always lurked around the corner and threw potshots only at us and our gods. The intelligentsia mocked our faith, scoffed at our belief and laughed at our rituals.  Some among them believed in selective atheism. They kept redefining our faith. They invented source from our countless literature and interpreted it to their convenience. Our trillion gods in different forms, countless rituals and centuries old practices provided them enough fodder to chew, yet we ignored them.

Our own rose in defense for them, tolerance was understood as submission. We were never taught ours was the only “ONE”,  for we were the only one, and when we traveled to their holy places we never felt threatened whey they said I am the only “One’.  We did not have anyone point at the sky and say “There lives our God” nor did we have a messiah who traveled to preach the existence of a “HIM” or read from the book of God. Evangelism did not occur to us nor did we promote our faith in different countries and we let others differentiate us. We let others canvas for their gods out in the open and we just walked past them, while some of us merged into their crowd. Our country was halved in the name of God and still we let them be. Not anymore, now they want it transformed. Our identity is at stake, our culture at peril and a civilization waiting to have done time.

Our customs are curbed beneath different garbs under the pretext of the new social order. A bull fight once in a year is stopped citing cruelty to the animal and we are ridiculed when we ask the same for the cow. We cannot espouse our faith or our customs for we are shouted down in the name of plurality and secularism. Our fringe elements are touted as our leaders and corporate honchos, historians, scientists, politicians, writers all from the “Intelligentsia” come together to teach us how to practice our faith. Nothing shakes them collectively as much as a mild assertion of our faith, a faith followed by people who for centuries have accepted other faiths in their main stream.

Every incident involving others is given a “saffron” colour and these incidents shake the collective faith of the “Intelligentsia” who spring from everywhere with their bytes. Nothing so far has frightened them. Nothing to them has created a blot on the fabric of our secularism, integrity or security. A motley crowd of around 30 who follow some barbaric methods to protect their faith become the 80% of the population for the so called “Thinkers”. They create a fear psychosis in the minds of the population about their existence while the 80 crore live with the other crore 20 harmoniously.  It is these “Assortments” from the different spheres who are a real threat to not just our harmony but also our existence. If the “Extremes” from our faith give us the wrong fame it is the “others” who try to destroy it by clamouring for their importance in public through their “Fear” quotes.

We have a right to follow our faith in the place of its birth. We deserve our space for our faith our respect for our beliefs. We don’t ask for any exclusivity. What we ask for is what is practiced elsewhere. We are much more moderate and tolerant than the others. The ones who preach to us “plurality” enjoy the “singularity” when they go abroad. They speak little or nothing against it. They have learnt to accept it. We don’t ask for importance, we don’t ask for priority. We just ask for respect for our faith. We request to let us be. Appeal to be sensitive to our customs and beliefs. We request not to overwhelm us with “Strength” or the “Wisdom”. We don’t want to compare gods or faith. We don’t want to debate who is for real, who is the better. Leave us alone.

Practice whatever but don’t tread on our toes. We will outlive their linear forecast for we belong to the cycle. We don’t know our birth and we believe there is no end. We are part of a process, we are “Time”. It is time we got our due, time we reclaimed our faith, our history and its glory. It is time we are proud being who we are and what we were.

To take pride in our heritage that still stands. We don’t want these at the expense of others. We have nothing against anything for we believe we encompass everything. Nothing is new to us. We have seen it all, achieved it all. We see it now in different forms. It’s a cycle we are part of it for we know no beginning or end.

Osama Bin Laden, Tablighi Jamaat and India’s fight against Covid-19

India today is looking at potential Corona Pandemic, which at one moment, it thought it had escaped. Like most of the countries, India had its first infection on 30th January. In next 60 days, the number reached around 2000. And in just next 7 days of April, the number more than doubled. And as you read this, it has crossed 5500. If there is one reason, to which this rise can be attributed to, it’s the Tablighi Jamaat event held on 21st March in a Markaaz in Nizamuddin, Delhi. Close to 2000 devout Muslims coming all over from India, along with preachers from Indonesia attended the event. These foreign clerics were infected with Covid-19, which was passed onto Indian Muslims. Who after the event have now travelled all over and have infected Indians in 17 different states.  As things stand, every one out of three Corona patients is connected to Tabligh. And every one out two new infections are related to the Tabligh Event.

Now the question is, why this event was allowed to go through? On its part Government can say, it had issued a prohibitory order on 13th March against holding this event. Notwithstanding which, Mohammad Saad, chief of Tablighi Jamaat, decided to conduct the event. There is little doubt that this is defiance of Law. And just like Shaheen Bagh Protest it did challenge the writ of the Indian state. But then as an ordinary citizen whom should we blame? Saad & his law defying Tablighis or Indian Government? For me in both cases, Shaheen Bagh and Tablighi Jamaat congregation, Indian state has blinked.

But then this is not the first time, neither this will be last. Starting right from Nehru, to Atal Bihari Vajpayee there are enough instances that Indian state has not been able to stand up to challenge thrown by Islamists. However what’s mind boggling is the fact that Osama Bin Laden did explain this strategy to bring modern Liberal Democratic states to their knees in detail. Back then in 2002, none paid any attention to it is a different matter. He used to say, I know Americans (specifically) and west in general cannot stand loss of human lives. But what he said further is profound. He said, we will use the weight of your administration system to destroy you.

What does Osama meant by “Weight of your Administration System”? To understand this let us look at a live example. Americans defeated the Taliban in Afghanistan. But even, 15 years on, they have been not able to establish modern democracy there. Why? Because basically the system of rule of law, prevailing in modern democracies is something which most of Afghans themselves don’t want it!

Consider these facts. After a long drawn bloody war which lasted for many decades and killed hundreds of thousands, Hamid Karzai was elected first President in 2004. Even then there is no peace as such in Afghanistan. As per one report by Brown University, close to 150 thousand people have been killed between 2001 to 2014, and 160 thousand have been injured. Most of these are Afghan civilians, soldiers, Pakistani terrorists, Afghan Tribesmen and American Soldiers too. But you see, after so many years and bloodletting massive proportions the killing season just does not seem to end. And even after killing Osama and replacing Afghani tribesman with a proper elected Head of State, America doesn’t seem to be winning! Because in this case Afghanis and Islamists generally don’t play as per your rules. They have their own set of beliefs and a different game altogether. To defeat them you will have to play as per their rules. Believers of Sharia cannot be defeated by modern world with modern law. Fidayeens cannot be stopped by Lawyers and Courts.

Tablighi Jamaatis are the Fidayeens of trying times such as these. They are doing to India, what Jihadis in the airplane, which took down twin towers, did to America. Let me explain. In India you would have seen many instances of law being broken by people attending Friday prayers etc when there are orders to stay home. Just ask yourself why no instances of Namaaz on roads or in any of the Mosques during lockdown in Saudi Arabia? You will never witness this Nizamuddin type defiance of law in any of the Middle East state. Because the law over there is made by taking into understanding the Islamist Psyche. The public knows, if law is broken consequences will follow. This kind of buffoonery is only seen countries where there is Liberal democracy, such as India.

So when Tablighi Jamaat event was held, by defying the order, Mohammad Saad and his followers knew ‘Kuch Nahi Hota’! (Nothing will happen). And they were right. There has been FIR after FIR. Saad is absconding. Mighty Indian state is requesting him to surrender. Tablighis are not reporting to police or hospitals. If taken to hospitals they are seen roaming naked and misbehaving with nurses. And because of this contemptuous behaviour towards everything which is Indian…The Laws, traditions, people, today we have a situation where the Corona crisis is threatening the whole nation now. And this, when we had the pandemic under control.

So when Osama said “The weight of your Administration System”, he knows the weakness of modern democracies and law. Just remember how much time was lost in punishing someone like Ajmal Kasab. He was seen live on TV killing scores of people in 2008. It was as open and shut case, it could have been. Yet took us 4 long years to hang him. In spite of top of the line weaponry, best intelligence and unmatched military power, America could not stop Fidayeens from taking town Empire states building. India may have the best doctors, all the required medicines and hospitals, but if it blinks again while going after Tablighis the Pandemic will take its toll. If the state lacks the courage to arrest Maulana Mohmmad Saad and his followers, Covid-19 will not spare us.

Battling cabin fever- Why is it worth the wait

0

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. While humans have a genuine talent for ignoring inconvenient facts, they are equally vulnerable to chewing the bitter cud of insight. Having said that, it cannot be denied that opportunities knock our doors when we least expect them to.

Amidst the hue and cry on the outbreak of COVID-19 and measures being taken across the globe to flatten the curve, one resource that nature seems to have bestowed upon us in abundance in these times of uncertainty, is time itself. On the one hand, where medical fraternity is burning the midnight oil to develop a vaccine against the novel Corona virus, the production house at bureaucracy has successfully completed 11 episodes of its show entitled “rendezvous with lock-down”.

As citizens-turned-netizens continue to raise their brows and fall prey to the vagaries of this viral disaster, many of them are flicking off COVID-19 related updates like flakes of dandruff and ramping up their internal systems to fight bigger battles that lie ahead.

With ample time at their disposal, spinning creativity and contentment from the thread of free will is certainly not an uphill task for those who believe in the power of time. Be it philanthropic deeds or exercising a hobby or upgrading skills, reports from across the nation are rife in the print media. What started off as a recipe to keep the dragon at bay seems to have become the new normal.

However, to call it a norm would not be appropriate at this juncture considering the fact that we live in a society where norms go for a toss every now and then. But, insofar as making the best out of present situation is concerned, Indians are definitely doing a good job at all fronts, making it “worth the wait”.

Can one virus inspire dozens?

0

By now, all of us know that one virus can infect dozens. But, is it also true that it can inspire dozens? Let’s find out.

As the nation-wide lock-down to halt the contagion enters into its 17th day today, some truly inspirational stories have started shaping the narrative of Indian economy. Having gone crazy with boredom, youngsters have come up with multiple ways of making bucks and dealing with the cabin fever. Some have joined hands with e-learning portals to provide assistance to school-goers and those preparing for competitive exams, while others are simply busy in philanthropic deeds like feeding the poor and the needy ones. On one hand where textile firms have pitched in to help the healthcare professionals cope up with the shortage of PPE, dominant players in the brewery industry are doing their bit by maintaining the supply of much-needed hand-sanitizers. By all means, the above examples prove that businesses have anticipated the threat of insolvency and therefore preparing to adjust themselves to the inescapable vicissitudes of the economy, which, as of now, shows no signs of restoration to normalcy.

I know this wasn’t inspiring enough as we human beings always yearn for more. So, the best is yet to come.

The vacuum created after imposition of industrial shut-down has provided opportunities for operations in the underground market to flourish. In an attempt to make fast bucks, local firms are resorting to black-marketing of hand-sanitizers. Reports of incidents related to cyber-crime have also started pouring in. If sources are to be trusted, hackers are keeping an eye on the systems of hospitals and health care centers. In the worst case scenario, an email containing a link to access COVID-19 related information could be received and clicking on that link (unknowingly or out of curiosity) would transfer the control of these systems to the hackers, who would then demand a huge ransom. This is truly ‘inspiring’, isn’t it?

However, as this wave of inspiration continues to send ripples across the economy, it is heartening to see that Corona warriors have not just secured the front doors, but have also been successful in containing the consequences through the backdoor. After all, nobody wants to cut a sorry figure at the end of the day.

Corona alone cannot kill India but economy can, do not continue lock down beyond April 14

0

Lock down of India beyond April 14 2020 may be more dangerous to our economy and livelihood of millions and millions of Indians than the danger likely to pose by Corona.

Today we are shivering with fear and tension over increasing number of Corona positivists as a result of increased number of tests. More tests done therefore more positives are getting recorded and we should not limit our interpretation and hype our anxiety over just increased positive cases of Corona.

The test positivity comes only because the people are carrying the virus. That means they have got the virus much before the test was conducted. How long before they got the virus or for how many days they have been harbouring the virus should be our question although we may not able to get the answer accurately.

All those positive cases would have transmitted the virus to many others so on and so forth. We also must ask the question of whether all those positive cases exhibit the classic signs and symptoms of corona prior to test or only after knowing their PCR results to be positive. Then we have to tread carefully the role of psychology in worsening the disease than corona virus. Another question is also very relevant that is about death that happened exclusively due to corona.

By harping corona too much we should not land up later in a situation like dandruff, a disease or physiological disorder and Pityrosporum ovale is whether the actual cause?

Abundant scalp scales increases the population of the commensal scalp and skin flora Pityrosporum ovale population or increased population of Pityrosporum ovale increases abundant scalp scaling in the scalp? Till date the medical science does not have any clear answer and if anyone dares establish experimentally to prove the Koch’s postulate with Pityrosporum ovale in double blind, randomized, statistically significant human population of different age group including equal sex ratio that would be a path breaking outcome. No one would, because, the truth is different and the only point of difference some stand on the other side of the science and hence both group does not want to prove the truth.  Truth is bound to shake their scientific belief system and hence they do not want the factual science to emerge.  Further dandruff is not such a medically important disease.

The point of debate is that even to simple dandruff, science offers nothing but confusion, imagine about corona!

States may be asking for lock down beyond April 14 not with any logic but mostly due to political reasons.

The lock down may cause acute unemployment problem, lethargy in people to seek employment if lock down continues for long period time, closure of many MSME start-ups become inevitable, sick units just getting revived with the government loan will go back to death chamber, unorganized traders are likely to go dry fry, the supply chain that supports the unorganized trade, small farmers, milk producers, home-made eatable sellers, all would vanish,  employees working in various private sectors like IT, education, manufacturing, marketing, all of them may die due to loss of job and livelihood. Poverty and penury will unite India and not the spirit of Indians as one.

People will certainly recall the pain of demonetization and GST and the continuation of lock down if it exceeds beyond April 14, India will go hopeless. State governments can afford to demand for continuation of lock down, but the central government should not be party to such an exercise and should let the states to use its prerogative to go ahead with lock down.

If the lock down continues for another 14 days or more or one or two months, after revocation lock down, the second wave of corona if emerges vigorously, what the government would do to deal such situation. As of now, Corona is present in India only with reference to PCR positivity and not in terms of number of deaths. Indians may survive corona but not the loss of livelihood.

Restrictions must continue, hotspots must be contained, people’s movement must be restricted but at the same time, manufacturing activity especially the MSME sector, un-organized sector etc., must be allowed to function and so shall be movements of goods across states.

The possible people congregation spots such as schools, colleges, recreations centres, beaches, cinema theatre, worship places etc., must be closedown till the state is reasonably free of corona. However government must ensure all private schools, colleges and other organizations pay salary to the employees during the closure period.

The choice before the nation is not vote bank politics but safety of people and safety of our economy.  Economy and human life are inseparable in a country like India and hence the government cannot offer any safety to people by not protecting their livelihood. India is highly a materialistic county, poor at large, ignorant and illiterate and our economy is highly un-organized.

Just to prove the chastity of mother Sita, Lord Ram asked her to enter into fire and such an act although shows how open Ram was to heed to the views of even the last man in the street, but still the blemish remains with Ram.

Death of the nation will be imminent if lock down continues in the same fashion. The proposal worked out by the state of Kerala for revocation of lock down is quite impressive and the central government must borrow the wisdom of Kerala government to deal the revocation of lock down. Save humanity pledge should not be unidirectional by caricaturing and accusing corona alone, we need to save the economy also to save people.
