Is Rahul Gandhi laying a foundation for Congress Mukt Bharat?

The early trends for the Indian general elections in 2024 came out as soon as Mr. Gandhi completed his 64-65 minutes AICC Virtual Media Briefing on Coronavirus Pandemic. At the time when Indian National Congress, India’s oldest party is still busy grooming up its youth icon, the Gandhi-scion; BJP is looking forward for a 350+ seats in its third consecutive victory.

I am in no mood to joke, and it is damn serious.

Even before I move on the contents of the address, I want to ask a very simple yet very complicated question. Mr. Gandhi addressed the press, but in what capacity? Why didn’t a party worker with an official designation (who can be held accountable) address the congress’ press conference? Mr. Gandhi had already resigned from the Party as president. He is not a part of the All India Congress Committee. No one knows if he is still a part of Congress Working Committee or not, his own party members wanted this clarification a month ago. If the press conference was limited to Kerala and Waynad, it was fine. But it was not limited to his constituency. Did he speak as a party spokesperson? Or has the party invented a new position for him that we don’t know of? This is not new for the party. If we look at Mr. Gandhi’s political career, there have been several positions that were tailor made for him. He started his political career as a Chairperson for National Students’ Union of India and Indian Youth Congress. Who was the chairperson before him and after him? No one! the position was established especially for him. Who is the vice president of Indian National Congress today? Who was the vice-president before him? No one! the position was especially established for him. So, once again, in what capacity is he addressing the press?  What does his words mean?

Moving on to the actual contents of his press conference. His statement: “We stand in solidarity with the government today but will raise questions once Pandemic settles down” reflects a serious issue with grave consequences for the country. I believe one of the major roles of Opposition is to highlight the lapses in the ruling government’s approach. Isn’t it? What is the use of the opposition if they are too afraid to raise questions beforehand? Does it help if they raise question only when something bad happens? Moreover, in this case they are standing in solidarity with the government and not raising questions because they haven’t researched properly. Uttering “strategic” more than 67 times in less than 60 minutes does not mean that he has a strategy or anything close to what resembles like a strategy.  His press conference reminded me of one of his interviews in 2014 with Arnab Gowswami, Frankly speaking with Rahul Gandhi, that had gone viral for obvious reasons. No matter what the host asked he replied with two phrases: “Women Empowerment” and “Open the system”. This time no matter what a journalist asked, he replied with two words “Strategic” and “Testing”.  A parrot can do better than this.

I assume he spoke on behalf of INC, because as soon as his comments and intentions are questioned, the party might come up with the statement “He spoke in his personal capacity and it has nothing to do with the Party”. The party has done it a million times in the past and won’t hesitate this time especially when Rahul Gandhi tried to promote Chinese business agenda.

How? Two points:

  • Out of several international companies that provide video conferencing services, he chose Zoom video conference, the company that has most of its research and product developed in China and is owned by a Chinese native Eric Yuan. Mr. Rahul Gandhi promoted an app that has sever security and encryption lapses, compromising cyber security of Indians as well as a national party.
  • Rahul Gandhi claims in the conference that lock-down cannot defeat the virus but aggressive testing can. He goes on and explains how testing will help to isolate. However, home isolation imposed in the form of lock-downs does the very same thing. Testing does not stop the virus from spreading, it only confirms a positive case. Lock-down stops the virus from spreading. Gradual releasing on the lock-down is the most efficient way of utilizing the existing resources.  Rahul Gandhi furthered Chinese narrative of aggressive testing. In fact he himself mentioned in his conference that the test kits have to be imported from China.

Let me explain with a small example as to how lock-down is more effective and efficient way in handling the pandemic than simply importing. Lets say there are 10,000 people, and only 10 testing kits. If there is no lock-down all these 10,000 people get the virus, to test them the existing 10 kits are not at all sufficient and a lot more would be required. This is what happened with Italy. They did exactly what Mr. Gandhi recommends, aggressive testing and isolating the areas where tests were positive. At the end, a developed country like Italy surrendered and said we don’t have enough healthcare staff and facilities for our patients. The hospitals in Italy stopped taking in old patients. Italy is 60 million people, compare it with India’s more than 1.3 billion i.e. 1300 million i.e. approx 200X more.

However, if Italy would have followed Modi’s model. They would have not embarrassed themselves like the way they did. From the same example. When we have a strict lock-down, all those 10,000 people would not come in contact with anyone who is already infected. The only people who have the risk of getting infected are doctors, healthcare staff, police department, essential service providers. Plus the lock down is not 100%, there are people still coming out. The point is, the healthcare system will not be overwhelmed by sudden rush. Lock-down makes sure that the number of people that would need the test remains manageable and there would be sufficient time to reuse the test kits. When on 20th April, some more services are relaxed, there would be a new set of people who would come in contact with the virus, and even with the small number of kits would be sufficient. Then the next set of services would be relaxed, and so on. It is as simple as seat utilization in the service industry. Flatten the curve as shown in the picture below:

flatten_curve

Modi government’s idea behind lock-down is two fold, first not to overwhelm the healthcare system by a sudden rush in the number of patients and second not wasting tax payers money by importing more than required number of test kits from China. No, wonder Indian National Congress don’t get the second part, because they have always been eager to import. I am very glad that Congress is not the ruling party, if it was the ruling party, we would have either seen many many deaths or would have had accrued humongous debt to repay to China like Pakistan has today. And they would still come out clean saying, it was a natural calamity, we did our best.

The problem with Indian National Congress is that Rahul Gandhi or any other Gandhi for that matter runs a one man show.  He/she is always surrounded with boot-lickers, yes ma’ams and yes sirs. It does not matter what Rahul Gandhi’s current designation is, whatever he says is the word from the bible for the party karyakartas. Sometimes I envy him, he says stupid stuff and goes back to enjoying his life, his party people happily  spend their life time cleaning up the mess he creates in less than an hour.

It is not that the government is doing everything that can be done and there is nothing that can be highlighted. There are more than enough questions that the opposition parties should have asked Modi Government by now, if only they had a good intent. Some of the issues that should be raised are:

  • Indian Railways suspended its operations for the first time in over 150 years. It was a very good opportunity for maintenance work, which was never done because it was not possible to stop the operation. The opposition should have asked the government the rate at which the railways have replaced the rail lines. Why didn’t they ask? Or rather why didn’t they push the government.
  • Same goes with the roads. There were literally no cars on the streets, roads could have easily been repaired. How many roads were repaired? or How many new roads were built? Why didn’t the opposition raised this issue?
  • Sewer-lines; Since traffic was not a problem, I suppose the  sewer-line laying work has been done. Why didn’t Rahul Gandhi ask this? Drainage cleanups; come a little rain and there will be floods.
  • What is Indian government doing to get local video conferencing apps? Why is India not manufacturing test kits locally in India instead of importing them from China? The USA already started manufacturing them in house. If they can why can’t we?
  • What is the status of Indian research on Coronavirus?
  • The air quality and the water quality improved after the lock-down was imposed. What is the government doing to keep it the same state after lock-down is lifted? Are factories that are shut for the time being asked to set up waste recycle systems?
  • Why is government not taking strict actions against the people from a specific peaceful and afraid community, who are spitting and pissing on healthcare staff? Why are they still allowed to roam outside? Why aren’t they put behind bars?

Congress is not raising these issues because doing that will hurt Congress’ chance if at all any, of coming back to power. Congress knows, it does not matter who Indian Muslims vote in state elections, they will vote for them come a general elections. That’s, why no comment on Tablighi Jamaat by Mr. Gandhi. Congress knows raising questions regarding manufacturing and local product development in India  will make them talk about Modi’s flagship projects like Make In India and Startup India. And likewise.

These are some of the questions which I could think of, I am pretty sure there would be many more. Indian Opposition in not behaving like an opposition should, they are behaving like an outsider who is waiting for Modi Government to make a mistake and then snatch the power to rule the nation from Modi. But the thing is, there are always a lot of people like me who would always be there to raise questions and try that the BJP does not miss something important. So, people who are waiting for the government to make mistake, can keep waiting. Mr. Gandhi is still young, just 49, there are many many more general elections he is going to witness as unofficial party president.

The reason why Muslims choose ‘stone pelting’ to protest is associated with Islamic custom called- Rami al-Jamarat or Stoning the Devil

For a very long time we have been reading about Kashmiri Muslims pelting stones on Indian Security Forces deployed in Kashmir. After Citizenship Act was amended vide Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), we saw stone pelting by students of Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University. This later took larger proportions during Delhi Riots when Muslims used slings to throw multiple truckloads of stones on Hindus. Now we are reading about Muslims throwing stones on Police Officials and Doctors who visit Muslim dominated or exclusive areas to test suspected COVID-19 positive people including Muslims who participated in Tablighi Jamaat Markaz. This has not been a stray incident here or there. We have seen stone pelting on police officials approaching a mosque in Madhubani, Bihar and very recently in Moradabad, UP where medical team was badly injured in stone pelting in Muslim area, when they went there to test people.

Stone pelting by Muslims in India is not merely a form of protest against the Indian State, Government, and its functionaries and officials, including law and order enforcement officials i.e. Police, and healthcare professionals like Doctors and Nurses. For this we need to understand the religious ritual called the Rami al-Jamarat or Stoning the Devil. The ritual of Rami al-Jamarat is the integral part of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. In this ritual, Muslim pilgrims throw pebbles at three walls called the Jamarat. These three walls are located in the city of Mina, which is situated in the east of Mecca.

This ritual of Rami al-Jamarat is a reenactment of Abraham’s Hajj, wherein he stoned three pillars representing the temptation to disobey God and preserve Ishmael. According to the ritual, on the 10th day of the month of Dhu-al-HIjjah, the pilgrims undertaking Hajj must strike one of the larger pillars with seven pebbles. After this is done, the pilgrims have to shave their hair. Later on following two days, the pilgrim must hit each of the three walls with seven pebbles. Total of 49 pebbles are required for this ritual.

The religious connection of this stone pelting done by Muslims in India on Indian security forces and medical teams is deep. The man who conceptualised this form of protest took inspiration from this religious ritual of Rami al-Jamarat performed during Hajj. Muslims in India view the Indian State, Government, and its functionaries and officials, including law and order enforcement officials i.e. Police, and healthcare professionals like Doctors and Nurses as the Devil. In all probabilities, this is the reason why Muslims in India replicate the Rami-al-Jamarat by pelting stones on Indian security forces, police officials, doctors, etc to ward these devils off.

This raises following questions in mind of every right minded and thinking Indian who believes in absolute and real secularism, non violence, liberalism, and inclusive society were rule of law and the constitution of India is upheld and is above any religion:

  1. Is this the reason so called self proclaimed secular liberal progressive reformist humanist cultural Muslims in India never speak against stone pelting on Indian Government Officials by Muslims in India?
  2. Is this the reason why they try to silence us when we speak against this act of their brethren and fellow believers, by calling us Islamophobes and accusing us of spreading hate, when all we are doing is speak the truth and ask difficult questions – like why attack police officials, doctors, etc – which they dont want to answer?
  3. Is this the reason why they want to defend their fellow believers and brethren by silencing us, instead of condemning this act of violence?

Muslims in India need to answer this and come out clean on this issue.

The airport bookshop: A victim of the new normal in a post Corona world

0

Among my fondest memories, growing up, is flying into Jaipur from Calcutta, with my family, to spend summer vacation at dadajis house. There weren’t too many flights back then and we’d saunter into the airport with our bags, go through the relaxed security screenings and browse the airport bookstore as we waited to board. The airport in Jaipur was small. We’d walk from the tarmac to the terminal and instantly see my grandfather or uncle who’d come to receive us. I remember dadaji leaning on the railing, a few feet away from the conveyor belt happily waving and smiling at me. I’d climb on the first railing from the other side while he hugged me, oblivious to my parents struggling with the bags and my baby sister. And then 9/11 happened.

One fine day we were told that planes had been hijacked and rammed into 2 tall buildings in New York. As a child I watched the news with morbid fascination. It was thousands of miles away and I didn’t think it would affect my life in any direct way and for a long time it didn’t. Until I took my next flight, a short one from Jaipur to Delhi, where my parents had since relocated to. The relaxed, exciting vibe was replaced by terse faces, the security screening took much longer than usual and I was still in queue when boarding was announced. That was perhaps the first time in memory that I hadn’t visited the airport bookshop. When I arrived at Delhi airport I had to collect my luggage, make the long lonely walk to outside the terminal and search for my father who’d come to receive me. I had outgrown the arrival railing but I instinctively glanced towards it expecting to see scores of people waiting for loved ones, but it was empty. They were all outside.

In the larger scheme of things, these are minor almost insignificant changes in our daily lives. The ‘normal’ in the post 9/11 world was different from what was ‘normal’ before it. Likewise, after the Mumbai terror attacks, a meal at a fancy hotel, suddenly meant a round of checks when the car pulled in, followed by depositing your belongings for an X-ray screening, and then being screened yourself by a guard with a metal detector. We do this now like we’ve always done it, it’s become a part of muscle memory, dropping bags for checks, getting patted down at places like the mall or a hotel is so normal that we don’t think twice about it.

Every time the world faces a calamity, man-made or natural, new protocol is put in place, minor changes that you quickly adapt to and embrace as the ‘new normal’. Which brings me to the calamity we are now facing. A global pandemic has swept through the world facilitated by our connectivity and mobility. Scientists are scrambling to find a vaccine, leaders are locking down entire countries and people are struggling to deal with the restrictions as they try to adapt to this new way of living. One day we will find a cure, we will go back to the world but will it be like we left it?

Will airport security include a temperature screening round, an additional queue to stand in and clear before you board a flight. Will a medical certificate become as mandatory as a visa. Will we ever be able to go to a concert, a cricket match, a food festival without a sliver of doubt creeping into our minds. Will stockpiling groceries to be stored away for another possible lockdown become normal. Will companies realize that most work can be done from home and make it acceptable to do so. How many parents will willingly send their kids for those fancy exchange programs and trips to NASA. When we finally do travel to Italy or the USA will a pandemic museum or memorial become a part of our itineraries like Ground Zero is for tourists in New York. Will families of doctors and nurses live in as much fear as those of soldiers. Will company off-sites and conferences be struck of organization budgets. Will slipping on a mask to head out be as common as slipping into shoes.

My guess is as good as yours. We will find out eventually but knowing me, I think I’m going to reach airports an hour or so earlier so I can still browse the airport bookshop.

Role of the WHO is under the scanner

0

WHO is an international body which is responsible for coordination and cooperation among its members through ministry of health and other bodies to deal with global health challenges. Unlike COVID-19 other recent pandemics didn’t come with this much catastrophe. Global economy is standstill right now. Nations are bound to use only savings for their consumption purpose. EDCs are facing dramatic problem as their supply chain got a knee jerk. Fear of death from starvation is a something that worrying most to their leader. Pakistan’s premier is leading the drum on that front which seems understandable. Now every country is facing an acute dilemma to chooses between Scylla and Charybdis.

Even though China and South Korea have been able to provide a way to deal with current dilemma, it is a something which is not feasible in every geographical boundary. So how should we respond to the situation at national level? Developing world is continuously iterating, they are not capable of handling the situation in case of any sudden broke out. These are the countries looking for some guidance from international community. This brings us down into important roles and responsibilities that institutions like WHO can play. Not surprisingly, WHO is the latest victim of Trump administration. USA stopped funding to the WHO while questioning its credibility and role in dealing with contagion Corona. We can trifurcate the whole story into initial response of China, followed by WHO and USA.

Giving the WHO’s role, responsibility and its functioning style, it is obligated to get a single information from its signatories even if single case of epidemics has come into the notice like India does in Nipah virus eruption. Indirectly, China should inform the WHO way earlier than Jan 2020. Instead of this, China tried to hide the case and any reports related to the same. These actions are the part of Chinese foreign policy which staunchly support the opacity and selective revelation of reports. Initial subjugation of a doctor in Wuhan city by its state machinery is enough to argue it. This short-sightedness of communist state resulted in the unparallel human and economic loss.

Clearly, China didn’t make it public and seek for any help from international community as it doesn’t want to show itself a weak country. Somehow, China is responsible for its irresponsible behaviour and world has right to ask for its accountability once we will be back on the track.n responsibility came into the WHO. Did it handle the case in a proper manner? Answer is a big no! Since the inception of COVID-19, it was behaving like an amused creature. There were lack of clear strategies, guidelines and credible information. Questions related to range of contagious zone of an infected person, mask protocol, causation between temperature and virus, global supply chain of PPEs, masks and kits will be ask. Unavailability of prompt responses for these questions and simultanously availability of social media platforms provided a perfect environment where false news and claims can float. It is very natural to expect certain help and guidelines from a institutions like world health organization.

Then defiance of Trump administration to the joint report of China and WHO is the result of its distrust on both. WHO has not been performing up to its potential. Countries like Indonesia and India has been continuously battling for proper flow of research outcomes and information in case of contagious diseases. Sadly, it could not contribute more on the same. So, questioning efficiency and efficacy of WHO is not a new. The route shown by China to deal with ongoing menace seems only path to WHO so it was continuously praising China. This inherent bias towards China would be questioned. WHO should have taken everyone on the same table before giving thumps up to a nation’s strategy. Given the prevalence of COVID-19, accountability and transparency of the WHO must be ensured. Credibility of WHO’s premier is also in the quarantine as he is allegedly responsible for hiding Cholera eruption in Ethiopia thrice while he was a then health minister.

Last resort is the role of USA itself in handling the epidemic. It is reporting more than 0.6 millions of active cases as of now. So, what were the blunders that USA itself made? Its reactive response to the virus, stubborn nature of president, over confidence on its health infrastructure and underestimating virus all played an important role to the current situation. Emergence of epicentre in the western world is saying something extra that is “accessibility and affordability of good health facilities which are primarily facilitated through health insurance do not guarantee health for all at a mass level“.

Downplaying its opponents has been the perpetuating strategy of Trump administration since it came into the White House office. This applies to all other its western ally from Britain to some of the the Europian union countries. In conclusion, USA itself is majorly responsible for its condition. Having said that other responsible bodies can not get a green signal.

Despite all these happenings, US should not be jumping on the gun by blocking WHO’s funding. It will only create a havoc where international healthy community will be working without any leaders. As a result, fear of death will be growing across the poor world. All these measures should be come once fear of virus passed on. Then why WHO only? World seeks structural transformation in every global institutions like UN, UNSC, and WTO.

Yogi takes his own path

0

Yogi Adiyanath on March 20th became the first BJP Chief Minister of UP to complete 3 years in office. When he first took oath people felt that Modi has appointed one more of his version but with saffron robes. While the BJP/RW supporters felt it was a great choice the other side announced that UP will be finished due to the supposedly communal appointment. They prophesized that there will be communal riots, law and order break down, no development etc.

3 years on Yogi has turned to be a man of his own. While still under the shadow of PM Modi he is creating his own brand/image. His welfare and development policies, honest actions (does what he says), excellent communication skills and agility (swiftness in thinking) is definitely positioning him for the top leadership position in the future. He has made himself acceptable to the country with his all-round performance. Every decision of his has an element of surprise.

Uttar Pradesh which has the highest density of population in the country poses a serious challenge in tackling Corona. With about 970 cases as of April 18th seems to be in control of the situation. Yogi’s actions since lock down are commendable for he took care of people welfare, creating jobs through MNREG in agriculture sector and at the same time empowering police to drive law and order.

His decision yesterday of moving 7000 students from Kota, Rajasthan to their home state took every one by surprise. Apparently there was online activity by these students asking for help and here comes the help. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar comments looked sheepish. He should have kept quiet if he could not take his state students back. Of course there is an element of risk in Yogi’s action but he is clear in his mind that risk taken is better under the circumstances. There is as much risk of contracting the virus in a cramped hostel room.

His action of moving migrant UP labor from Anand Vihar was timely and shows his quick thinking. AAP govt in Delhi could not provide food and shelter to these labor who were left to fend for themselves. Though there was blame game it was clear APP govt did not get points for the poor handling of this issue.

His promise of delivering vegetables, milk and essentials to 23cr people at their door steps shows his ability to scale and at the same time taking stringent actions against violators shows his determination to be in control of the situation. The Moradabad incident on April 16th where there was stone pelting on health workers, 17 were arrested including Seven Women on the same day after a 3 am hearing. Don’t mess with this man. If India needs clean up it should start from UP and we have the right man there.

Dear Hindu! Stop giving justification to everyone

We offer Arghya to Sun because it causes skin nourishment and removal of viruses and bacteria from our body surface. Gayatri Mantra is very good for our nervous system. We Hindus don’t eat onion because it causes burning sensation and excess hotness. Many Hindus can be seen justifying our Sanatan practices. There is a tendency to cite examples of science and technology while addressing the Sanatan and Hindu culture. But why the compulsion to justify and who we are trying to convince?

Let us first examine the former question. It comes from our history. We are confused with our historical identity. Actually we have to follow our traditions and also remain in the race of globalization and modernity. This confusion was created with the help of current education system. Hindus have an inferiority complex which prevents them from accepting their Dharm universally. We want our identity to remain as a modern caste. For this, we keep our traditions and customs under the shadow of science. We compare. Sometimes from our relatives, sometimes from neighbors and as a nation from the western world. It is completely wrong to do this because there is nothing in the west that they can be proud of. We should be proud of us where knowledge, science, Dharm and philosophy originated and flourished from time immemorial. In such a situation, who can we compare ourselves to? But we do. Every one of us wishes that the Hindu Dharm of Bharatvarsh be immortal and long lived like the light of sun but no one wants to start it from ourselves. Sanskrit is loved but nobody wants to know it after studying it. This is the problem because we are lazy and our fear, our inhibitions have become our laziness. Even after trying, we are not able to be strong towards our traditions. This brings out the lack of self pride.

Now come to second part of our question. Who we are trying to convince?

To whom we want to give justification by expressing disbelief in our Dharm? They are the leftists who have spent their life in tarnishing our history. We are trying to convince such intellectuals and ideological enemies for whom our eternal history has no existence. These are the people who deny the existence of Shri Ram and call our Puran and texts false. We Hindus make such people great. These are the people who do not want us to be proud of our traditions and religious affluence. But we remain a part of their conspiracy. Which west are we smearing our pride to follow? The same west where acceptance of life has no fundamental values, where life has no real meaning or the west where capitalism has came to dominate in such a way that all social structures have become non-existent. In order to follow the west, we try to hide our Hindu Pride which we ourselves taught knowledge and science to them.

Stop all this. Accept your identity and declare your existence. There is no need to hide our folklore, traditions and Sanatan under the cover of science. Say that we perform Yajna for the observance of our vedic tradition and not for the destruction of germs. Say that we chant the Gayatri Mantra because Maa Gayatri is our Adishakti  and not to keep our nervous system healthy. Say that we keep nine day fast to worship Maa Durga and not to strengthen our immune system.

Until you will not accept your Vedic Pride, your enemies will continue to run their agenda by taking advantage of your helplessness. If you want to teach the world about science then do research on your ancient science. There are also many type of scientific Yajna. The entire Ayurved is full of medical research, work on it. The exact interpretation of astronomy in Hindu texts is probably best in any corner of the world. Bharatvarsh has tremendous reserves of knowledge and science, explore them and prove your superiority.

It is not that people are not aware of the above things. In many areas around the world, there are Hindus  in important positions who publicly acknowledge their Hindu identity with pride. After Narendra Modi came to power, the cultural identity of Hindus is expanding wonderfully around the world. Many organizations like ISKCON are firmly establishing Sanatan on the global stage but it is necessary to collectively awaken the Hindus  to establish Bharatvarsh  as the VishvaGuru where the largest population of Hindu resides.

So all my Hindus, wherever you live in the world and the position you hold, do not leave your pride that Sanatan has given us. The history of our Dharm makes us the best. Our Ved, Puran snd Texts makes us the best. We are residents of the land of Ram & Krishna. We are residents of a land where civilization has been practicing devotion, dharm, knowledge, science and philosophy since time immemorial. In such a situation, we are the greatest among all, so why do we need to prove this to anyone? There is a need to awaken that pride of greatness within ourself.

Can “mmunity Passports” help our society get back to normal?

0

As the Covid-19 pandemic brought the world to a halt, everyone is eager to know when and how things will turn to normal. Amidst this conundrum, the concept of “immunity passports” opens a window of hope to avoid a long-term lock down.

The immunity passport or certificate would be given to patients who have fully recovered and hence are immune to Covid-19- enabling them to return to normal life and work. Efforts are underway in the U.K., Australia, and Germany to test and learn about this approach. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), has also suggested the possibility of introducing an immunity document.

While governments around the world are exploring the idea to implement such initiatives, some health experts have raised a few concerns about this plan.

A lot still needs to be explored about this novel coronavirus. The duration of immunity for Covid-19 after someone has recovered from this deadly illness is still largely unknown. Typically, SARS patients – a disease caused by another form of coronavirus – don’t have a long-term immunity for the illness. Some coronaviruses that cause common colds can render a patient immune for only up to a few months.

Some experts also suggest a possibility of reinfection in recovered cases. However, they also add that reinfections would be mild and the acquired immunity would play a role to ensure protection.

Thus, immunity passports seem like a useful approach to help people get back to their jobs and keep the economy on an even keel. Meanwhile, it would also be important to keep a close watch on people who have been issued with immunity certificates to ensure they do not get reinfected.

Concerns have also been raised on the quality and efficacy of the antibody tests and whether the governments can implement these tests on a wider population. The health care systems around the world are already overwhelmed and conducting additional tests in the present scenario seems like a difficult task.

It is also unclear how the world will react to the concept of incentivising a certain group of population. The growing desperation caused by debt and lack of work can cause people to take extreme measures to get this immunity certificate.

Hence, until this concept gains much clarity, it is best to adhere to the current guidelines of social distancing and stay at home to arrest the spread of Covid-19.
