“I don’t believe in caste”

A phrase parroted by the millions of self-designated woke is one I, very much so, am bemused by. A parroting that I myself am a veteran of. Often echoed by those who see no purpose for introspection into the terms they are stating, as they are convinced this is but a stamp of the ancient that deserves no place in today’s world of material modernity. I would have argued the same, once.

I now beg to differ. As I delve into the topics of identity and read the narratives of post-modern literature, which beseech us to scream the pangs of decolonisation, I cannot but help to wonder what my grandmothers think.

How do they define their individuality? What do they call their ethnicity? Do they ever ponder the depths of identity politics and wonder where their place lies in all of this? Their answer is simply put: they do as they were told. Their family and cultural traditions subsisted on what others of their, dare I say it, caste do.

A blasphemous truth. A truth that the elite have spent gnawing away at, as they write their papers on returning to native ways while ignoring the realities of our elders. With the advent of the Europeans, an inorganic classification on the basis of region and language began in the Indian Subcontinent as well as the introduction of machinery in its agricultural societies.

Amidst the wide diversity present in India, there is a rather underrated diversity of community. Communities not formed on the basis of a shared tongue, rather a shared occupation. Communities existing not only in a single village but spread across various villages over various regions, speaking as much of a variety of dialects — yet still calling themselves one.

The integrality of the Jati Vyavastha (erroneously referred to as the ‘Caste System’) to Indian civilisation is oftentimes too overlooked. Dealing with it solely as an unforgivable inheritance from the ancients, the Indian youth and diaspora so actively shy away from discussing its intricacies and implications that they refuse to accept the Jati Vyavastha as the once all-encompassing socio-economic framework of society.

What does it mean to “believe” in caste?

The original phrase carries as much weight as claiming to disbelieve in capitalism. The question of belief does not arise at all. As the duality of rich and poor exists, so does caste. And it will stay. Such a statement can arise only from a pedestal of privilege. It is deluded, at best; for the one who has never been trampled by the oppression the system has brought and has never had to hide his community name out of embarrassment, of course, he on his high horse will not “believe” in it.

Just because his social entitlement lets him not associate with his caste, who is he to stop others. Others who have been deemed ‘lower’ by the system and will, without hesitating, associate themselves with their caste. For caste is community.

It has taken many years for me to finally understand what my Gurudev, Swami Chinmayananda, once said: “caste is not the problem, it is casteism.”

The ‘upper’ castes have progressed so far that they no longer need the association with their community and demand us all to work together to dismantle every aspect of the Jati Vyavastha, that the generation-long traditions and customs of the castes are to be thrown away to satisfy their academic discourses. But if we are to work for decolonisation, surely these traditions and customs are the purest relics of our native social diversity.

There must be a way of preserving our rites that have been handed down from the times of yore, and being able to identify with those communities of our past without there being a hierarchy of bigotry between us.

Caste has served as community for our ancestors. This is the nuance that is missed. The reason why our grandparents nag us of this term when finding a partner for marriage.

In a new world reaping the fruits of the industrial revolution, this stratification of society on the basis of wealth has given a new, more apparent divide to Indian society. With people now finding identity in the dialect artificially standardised as the language of their region, and with diaspora youth, for whom their racial minority status adds an extra dimension of confusion, the identity that caste brings seems entirely arbitrary.

Rightfully so. When race and language can bind communities, what role should occupation play? Why heed to our grandmother then?

My thoughts are everywhere on this topic and if there is one thing I have concluded, it is this: the caste diversity of India is something we can not even begin to fathom.

The interconnections of these communities and the similarity of traditions/rites being upheld by them, regardless of the thousands of miles that spanned between them, is remarkable to say the least. We must become comfortable calling caste a community. It is our duty to find out the practices and customs we once all upheld and I urge you all reading to take a moment and ask your grandparents what they did differently.

If we want to continue these traditions and associate with that same community then who is to stop us? But if we don’t have anything we deem worthy of preserving in today’s age and we wish to form community with our equals in this new socio-economic order, then that too is fine.

What we require though, is nuance. A thought.

Rajinikanth warns ruling AIADMK against reopening liquor outlets

Chennai: Superstar Rajinikant warns the ruling party AIADMK FOR OPENING THE liquor shops in Tamil Nadu. He says if it was done, it should not harbour “dreams” of coming to power again, apparently in next year’s Assembly elections. In a tweet, he also asked the government to work out alternate modes of revenue generation.

The AIADMK cannot have “dreams of coming to power again if the government re-opens TASMAC shops at this juncture,” the veteran said in the tweet. “Please #Look out for better ways of filling the coffers,” he added.

His remarks came a day after Tamil Nadu moved the Supreme Court, seeking a stay against a Madras High Court order directing closure of liquor shops in the state.

on May 8, the Madras High Court ordered the closure of state-run Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor outlets across Tamil Nadu after violations of social distancing norms amid the COVID-19 lockdown were reported. On Wednesday, the high court had refused to stay the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to re-open the TASMAC  liquor outlets on Thursday, across the state, barring Chennai City Police limits.

Tamil Nadu has so far reported 6535 cases of COVID-19, with 1824 recoveries, and 44 deaths

If novel coronavirus evolved to kill man, man may soon grow trunk/proboscis like Elephant or Tapir

0

It may sound funny, bizarre and unimaginable that humans may soon develop proboscis or long trunk like our elephant god or Tapir to fight novel coronavirus.

Evolution is never a prejudiced stepmother but instead an equal opportunity employer.

When evolution favours novel coronavirus to be omniscient in infecting everyone on earth, it is dumb to fear that man will not evolve to combat the virus.  This is all about evolution.  Evolutionary changes don’t occur as fast as viral communicability in our population.  That is science and the rest is fun.

We are debating too much about novel coronavirus and COVID 19 and made a strong perception among lay population that if the virus contract them, they are sure to develop COVID 19 and then what would happen to them………is left open to the imagination.

Two strong possibilities for the evolution of novel coronavirus we cannot discount or dismiss. The first possibility is parallel evolution. Due to a signal that man could not comprehend until now, the coronavirus would have received and then evolved to infect man in all most every geographical region.

The second possibility being, the virus would have evolved in one particular area taking advantage over the movement of people across the globe to travel and infect people everywhere.

The second possibility is to be accepted then should we not also accept the possibility of novel coronavirus may be evolving in some geography as Darwin’s Finches of Galapagos……?

Every species evolve and adapt only to enhance its survival and not to kill others in the ecosystem. Exploitation of the weaker and weakness is part and parcel of the game of kill and get killed in nature.

Our politicians too use such principle effectively… imagine had there be no poor people, none of our political parties would have survived today.  Imagine if there is no fear and ignorance, the lockdown would not have been imposed and then called it as Maha Yagna to save humanity in India.

The lockdown has killed our economy, life and livelihood of millions.

Darwin’s Finches are passerine birds distributed all over the world but in Galapagos Island, the bird has evolved with a peculiar character called vampire-ism, sucking blood from other animals to quench its thrust and such behaviour is uncommon among finches around the world.

Recent studies done by British scientists have shown the existence of three separate strains of novel coronaviruses such as A, B, C. https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/did-coronavirus-outbreak-begin-in-september-not-december-as-china-says-1676044-2020-05-09

Interestingly the strain A was reported to be dominant in US and the said strain was not so dominant in Wuhan, China. Then should we assume that the strain A could not infect Chinese population that well but could infect western population easily and hence it spreads well to US.

Or all these strains would have traveled together and then survived based on their fitness.  Or may be only one strain would have emerged, traveled to different parts of the world and then diversified genetically for its survival? Or else, is all these strains may be competing with each other to prove who is the fittest to survive?

If we look at the above confusion of novel coronavirus, one thing that popups up clearly is that the virus has not yet identified its final host and is still under natural selection process.

The genetic pleomorphism exhibited by the virus suggests its struggle alongside the struggle of Homo sapiens.

Another possibility of viral spread could be through various goods (extra-human sources) such as manufactured items; sea foods; semi-processed foods etc., and that have been moving across all countries in the world. The virus would have infected man from such sources, got mutated and the struggle of man-virus continues?

The big question is whether the virus or man remained calm during the pandemic?  Certainly, the virus is calm and the man had only made so much of noise about.  If the virus has travelled though ‘goods’, then what is the locus standee of the gospel instruction; use of mask, frequent hand wash, social distancing, lockdown etc.,?

From the evolutionary perspective, if novel coronavirus is the only pathogen that had emerged with such a strong infectivity and virulence in the recent times, then should we not assume soon that man may grow or develop proboscis or trunk like an elephant or tapir to prevent the spread of the virus?

India has not studied the virus even a little but did too much to prevent the spread of the virus by imposing nationwide lockdown for two months; killed the economy, life and livelihood of millions.

Before we press the panic button, should we not understand the ‘killer’, his or her idiosyncrasies?  But we weighed only the medical problem due to the supposedly believed killer called novel coronavirus.

ICMR, NITI Aayog and other organizations must be asked to explain what effort, resources and time they had allocated to understand the virus during the lockdown other than they have been travelling across in air-conditioned cars, enjoying all paraphernalia at the expense of Government of India.

When we quote USA, we should realize certain facts about USA. On January 20, 2020, the first case of COVID (atypical pneumonia) was reported in USA and before January 28, 2020, complete bio-data of the virus, USA has studied, analysed, nomenclature, documented, deposited the strain in the referral centre…….

Even the WHO had to learn a lot about novel coronavirus only from USA.

What Modi government has done to deal the pandemic other than the draconian measure called nationwide lockdown?

We allowed the medical professionals and bureaucracy to dominate the scene and gave least space for science to do its bit of job.

Indian doctors in general are good only in diagnosis of diseases, prescribe medicine or conduct surgery. They are oriented more towards practice….to treat patients and earn from patients.

Whereas most of the medical practitioners in US, UK etc., are hard core scientists, engaged in intense medical and drug research, chair several research institutions, write research proposals for grants and publish research articles in several leading journals like PNAS, EMBO etc.

But the research of most of the Indian physicians is limited to case reporting and publishing such case reports in respective association’s journals.

Science and our research quest should have been made as champion to deal the pandemic but we missed.  Our government may love to grant Ganga water for COVID 19 treatment project or clinical trial of some herbs with great pride.

How India will proper if we inculcate such regressive research engagements and allow the white collared bureaucrats and administrative agencies like ICMR, NITI Aayog to rule the roost?

We have to hope on evolution to save us and not by our government. Government knows at best only to lockdown the country and extent the lockdown; kill our economy, life and livelihood.

Lockdown has killed India the worst and not the novel coronavirus.

Informal Indo-Pakistan rivalry: Is South Asian University going into shoes of SAARC?

0

An added example in the series of the propaganda effort by Pakistan can be seen in an effort to defame India by putting spurious allegations against the later regarding the affairs of South Asian University.

Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (retd) has rightly opined in an article, published on South Asia Monitor, titled “India needs to hit Pakistan economically, carry out limited military operations” that Pakistan is indulging in fake news campaign to vilify the image of India. This desperation can be better understood in the light of the grand and ensuing success of ‘Operation All-Out’ in Kashmir which has brought down, profusely, the number of foreign terrorists operating in Kashmir. To compensate the loss, according to Lt Gen Hasnain, “Pakistan has chosen to up the ante with a combination of activities…where fake news, doctored videos and messages on social media have all been combined to create greater alienation among the people against India and paint India red in the eyes of the international community…” He cited an example of this in the fact of serious effort being made “towards creating a wedge against the Indian expatriate community in the Gulf region of West Asia.”

In furtherance of this, an added example can be found in a case of the baseless allegations made against India regarding affairs of South Asian University (SAU). SAU is an international University, in the nature of International Organisation relishing diplomatic privileges and immunities under the canons of International law and also through an act of Indian Parliament – the South Asian University Act, 2008. It is jointly established and run by 8 member-states of SAARC regional grouping. A report has been published in a Pakistani Media agency www.thenews.com.pk titled “India using SAARC-approved varsity for nefarious designs” which contains factitious and defamatory claims against India backed by no data & evidence and smell of this can be sensed by just having a glance over it!

Firstly, it is alleged that despite a million dollars funding by Pakistan, the number of its students, faculty & non-faculty members are very low. The actual reason for this anomaly is that there is a provision for reservation of students from each country and Pakistan has been allotted 10% of the pie. Notwithstanding the unfortunate fact of denial of visas, in few academic sessions, due to perennial border tension or otherwise charged atmosphere, many selected Pakistanis have been unable to come here due to their own preconceived notion and stereotype about India or reasons best known to them. For instance, out of 3 selected candidates from Pakistan in the merit list, only 2 joined the LLM programme this year! Blaming one country for this anomaly does not seem to be in tandem with a logical analysis of prevailing facts and circumstances in which SAU runs its affairs. Taking into cognizance the fact of a low level of advertisement of SAU in SAARC member states, how can one expect a greater number of students joining the varsity when the total number of applicants for the course is lesser or approximately equal to the seats allotted to a particular country?

A pertinent mention may be made of zero presence of Maldivians in SAU. Yet, Maldives is making its contribution to SAU operational expenditure in tune with its obligations under the international agreement it has entered into. Therefore, an argument that because a country is not getting its reserved portion in the total pie, it is incurring unnecessary expenditure and, therefore may not do so, is not a legally tenable one. The performance of a state’s obligation under international law, voluntarily undertaken in this case under the gamut of SAU agreements, that is the payment of agreed share, is not conditional upon fulfilment of any other condition.

Contrary to the Maldives, countries like Pakistan have been serving as an impediment in taking SAU to the pinnacle of glory and success. Illustratively, as reported in Indian Express in news piece dated 19th April 2010 titled ‘Faculty salaries for South Asian University set to be slashed’, the Maldives along with India were only two countries which were in favour of higher salary packages for faculties to attract talents having international repute! This proposal met with counterblast due to opposition by other six member states. To quote the same report, “Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan were the most vociferous in their opposition” arguing the salaries to be fine in the light of the cost of living in India and exemption of the same from income taxes.

Secondly, a spurious allegation has been made that ABVP (Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad) is “causing severe hardship to Muslim Students, especially Pakistani students, and sometimes preventing them from praying.” This news is taking the falsity to the apex level as ABVP has no official member or office bearer working in SAU. There is just a page name “ABVP South Asian University” that has been created to help prospective students of SAU in admission related matters. Some people at the university openly termed this ‘apolitical’ act of SAU as ‘unfortunate’, some even declaring it as an ‘illegal step’ in view of International stature of the university. These critics, mainly affiliating themselves to left ideology, are of the opinion that notwithstanding the presence of SFI (Student Federation of India) office bearers and activists in SAU under the banner of so-called ‘indigenous student bodies’, ABVP cannot continue its Facebook page in the current form.

Basically, they are advocating that ‘you can do indirectly a work that you cannot do directly’. This advocacy goes against a much-celebrated legal doctrine of the prohibition of ‘colourable exercise of power’, i.e., ‘You cannot do indirectly what you cannot do directly’. The prevailing argument opposing ABVP is nothing but putting ‘form’ above ‘substance’ which is a hilarious claim shorn of any sense of logic. Acceptance and justification of physical presence and working of SFI in strictly political affairs and opposition to ABVP’s social media presence and its apolitical work are making the argument of these critics fallacious, incoherent and unsustainable.

The genuine reason for opposition is strong ‘dislike’ by the critics for ABVP’s political ideology – an ideology which is still considered politically untouchable by left-oriented academics and intellectuals. Having discussed the nature of the presence of ABVP, one can gauge the level of merit in the claim of the report that ABVP is preventing Muslims from doing prayers!

Third, it has been asserted that “the university administration has been forcing them (non-Indians) to return to their home countries”. No data or documentary evidence has been forwarded supporting this contention. Nevertheless, this is another fake claim as the university has, in its notices, ‘encouraged’ or ‘advised’ students to go home and there is a substantial difference between encouragement and forced exodus. I, myself, want to stay here and am against any sort of forced exodus. But it is not the call of fairness to raise hue & cry over a non-existent issue.

When it comes to corruption claim by varsity officials, although no solid evidence has been made available, nevertheless, one can sense some degree of financial impropriety & abuse of power. But in these circumstances, it is the internal working structure of SAU that has to be blamed. Legally speaking, SAU is an international organisation and its functioning is independent of interference of the host country. An Indian, when appointed to a post in SAU, becomes immune from the control of the government of India due to university’s privileges and immunities.

Hence, the fact of an Indian official working in SAU and misappropriating the funds cannot give rise to any sort of obligation, legal or political, of GOI. Once imputed in SAU, the concerned Indian comes under the sole jurisdiction of SAU which has been endowed with full legal personality and is legally competent enough to pursue any cause relating to corruption or other matters. In this regard, SAU act, 2008 and HQ agreement provides for ‘Tribunal for Arbitration’ or ‘SAARC Arbitration Council’, respectively, for resolving these type of disputes. SAARC member states, through their representatives in Governing body, can press for the same. So the logic of blaming India for malfunctioning of the varsity is fallacious at root and defamatory in the face. Also, no country has lodged any formal complaint till this date over any of the allegations that have been made in the report.

At last, the learned author of the report gullibly suggests that “it would be better to relocate this Saarc university to Sri Lanka…because Sri Lanka has no political ambitions.” This nonsensical suggestion is dehors the cluster of international agreements relating to SAU, Viz. agreement establishing SAU and SAU HQs agreement between GOI & SAU. More importantly, construction of the permanent campus of SAU is in full swing and the university is likely to be shifted there in one or two years. Government of India is solely funding the construction cost which amounts to 2,500 crore INR and has also provided land admeasuring 100 Acres. India does not oppose constructive cooperation, a fact which is evident from recent COVID-19 cooperation, spearheaded under her leadership. Pakistan, right from the start, was trying to stall it arguing that help should be done only through SAARC secretariat. As usual, it did not find a single supporter among other SAARC member and had to leave its stubbornness. The bilateral rivalry which has made SAARC ineffectual is, it seems, on an adventure to take SAU to the same destination.

So these allegations are nothing, but another desperate attempt to gain some limelight in media and defame SAU and government of India. This mendacious effort goes against the very idea of South Asian spirit, which is the basic premise upon which SAU is based. I am of the firm belief that, we as South Asians are fortunate to witness a ray of hope in otherwise fractured SAARC system in the form of SAU. It is a burning but sole & spectacular example of the success of cooperation among members of SAARC regional grouping. Indo-Pakistan rivalry or mutual bickering or chop logic among SAARC member states will not be beneficial for the healthy life of varsity. If malicious propaganda like this continues, then I am sure SAU is going into the shoes of SAARC. We must strive to stretch the effectiveness of SAU to further strengthen the working of SAARC, and not conspire or act to make SAU a defunct body only to kill every prospect of a revival of SAARC. As a proud student of SAU, I hope we are not heading to that direction!

NPA- The truth

We are witnessing lot of information being spread in social media about loan written off for big industrialists or people shown close to PM Modi by main stream media. The ultimate purpose is to show PM Modi is corrupt and dancing to the tunes of these biggies.

First, Let’s understand the difference between written off and waive off in simple terms.

If someone has borrowed Rs 100 from you this month but unable to pay you back during the financial year as promised, you will write off this amount from your balance sheet as per standard accounting practice followed for long (not discovered by PM Modi) but you will still chase him to get back your money and you can use legal options against him if he is not following the agreement/contract.

In case of waive off, you are completely letting him go to pay a particular amount and there shall be no legal consequences against debtor. Loan waive off for farmers is the right example.

Let’s go back before 2014 when PM Modi was not in power, many social media experts and politicians were not aware how these NPA’s generated. (Non-Performing Assets), as per RBI report and information given by FM Nirmala Sitharaman, Gross advances of the state owned bank increased from Rs 18.19 lakh crore in FY 2008 to Rs 52.16 lakh crore as on FY 2014 (before PM Modi). She also informed that this aggressive lending practices, wilful default, corruption in some cases and economic slowdown led to spurt in stressed assets.

It was easier for PM Modi after elected in May 2014 to come forward and release a white paper with facts and figures how economy is handed over to him and mention that he can’t do much for next 5 years. PM Modi is known for working in adversities and a man of action. He has decided to take this as challenge and started working with then FM Late Shri Arun Jaitely. It was right on his part that he didn’t hide about NPA but brought it to the forefront for actions. Mentioning few steps to know the actions taken;

  1. The IBC (Insolvency and Bankruptcy code), SARFAESI (Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest) act and stressed asset management verticals…
  2. The government has taken comprehensive steps under it’s 4R’s strategy,
  3. Recognising NPA’s transparently
  4. Resolving and Recovering value from stressed accounts
  5. Recapitalising PSB’s
  6. Reforms in banks and financial ecosystem to ensure a responsible and clean system.

These various initiatives helped government with PSB’s to recover Rs 3.59 lakh crore till April 2019. These were written off but still recovered. Hence, do not mix waive off with written off. The process is going on and nobody shall be spared by PM Modi within the boundaries of the law of land, that’s why fear mongering and creating a fake news with distorted data is circulated on different platform to malign his image. Ultimately, this helps social media warriors to study deeply about these allegations against PM Modi to dig out real information about corruption or malpractices followed in the past by the bosses of fake news creators.

First is recovery of the stressed assets and most important is to obstruct creation of such assets in future. The technological advancements in banking sector and laws made by government, making it full proof mechanism. If you talk to senior officials of any bank, they are feeling relieved due to systems being implemented with new laws enforced. No politician, minister or bureaucrat can call and order them to sanction loan for their near and dear ones. So, we are gradually moving towards an honest and clean system.

I would like to request social media friends, refrain yourselves from these 5 points against PM Modi, you will be wasting your time and energy;

  1. Corruption charges
  2. Family first
  3. Sexual allegations
  4. Holidaying
  5. His hardwork and love for our lovely nation.

Why we need RSS

0

Amid lockdown, economic activities are decelerated, affecting neo middle class and poor families. Many organisations, businessmen and government agencies are offering aid. In every crisis, you will notice one organization always at the forefront is RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) without any selfish motive, religious discrimination, photo-op, just work relentlessly for the benefit of society out of belongingness.

RSS as an organization cope with unwarranted criticism from a particular section of politicians, media and people. The reason for hatred is their commitment towards society and country to enrich with deep rooted culture and knowledge which our ancient sages has given us to better our life and to strengthen society and build up patriotism and bring hope. Hopefully critics have realized during this tough period that whole world is appreciating Indian culture and its way of leading life.

There are thousands of SHAKHAS around the world, what they teach in Shakha and different courses is, discipline in life, enhance Leadership qualities, learn team work, mental toughness, develop attitude of belongingness towards society, develop and work on ground for Humanitarian causes and during natural calamities, create awareness about different issues of national importance among people and cultural activities. My sincere request to all youngsters to join RSS to enhance your life skills to become a better citizen and be successful in your endeavor.

When the pandemic is creating havoc in the lives of people, RSS volunteers are working fearlessly on the ground to help needy ones with food, masks, medicine, creating awareness, helping medical team and police force across country. More than 4.42 lakh volunteers risking their lives distributing few lakh foods packets every day without any religious discrimination. Creating an atmosphere of trust in masses.  This is not on paper but happening actually on the ground.  Cynical minds need to change their mindset even though it is difficult for them to come out of their narrow and vicious mindset.

Everyone can see the work of RSS during natural calamities whether it is Gujrat 2001 earthquake, Tsunami, Southern floods, Mumbai floods, Jammu and Kashmir floods, Uttarakhand floods and list goes on…. without discriminating on race, gender, caste and religion.

RSS runs more than 25000 schools with 45 million students across India including underprivileged children and tribal areas. Request youngsters and media to be a part of RSS for few days to get a feel of work and activities carried out to strengthen society and country.
