AAP & Congress created migrant crisis to win Bihar Elections

Two three months back some politicians, journalists were complaining that Indian government was not doing enough. Something like this:

They started keeping a tab on deaths because of Coronavirus. Kerala being the very first state. 3 Dead, 4 dead, ….. 100 infected. A constant reminder, news sites maintained a scorecard at the corner of the screen as if an election trends were shown. The very same people, when the Indian government imposed a lock-down started complaining that it is going to hit the poor, the economy and what not. But some how, the Indians did not pay much attention to what certain politicians and journalists were saying; and religiously followed the lock-down. They followed it so nicely that the fatality rate is among the lowest in the world. With such high population density, it is a commendable feat.

Not, only has the BJP handled the crisis brilliantly so far, but made a mark on the globe. Countries started looking upto India, be for the concerned drug or vaccine or for anything else. India did score a brownie point by the way it handled the crisis. This is not a good news for some politicians and journalists. I mention so far because the crisis is far from over.

Recently, Arvind Kejriwal came out and said that we have to live with Coronavirus and we should not hide from this fact. I agree with this. I have been saying this all along, you should read two of my articles on Coronavirus: The unwarranted fear of Coronavirus! and All in the name of Coronavirus, which were unfortunately removed from a lot of platforms where I share my content. Different people have exploited Covid-19 pandemic for different uses and I wanted to highlight that.

But why is he saying this now? Why so late? Did Coronavirus change? It is not like that his state government has created some exceptional healthcare infrastructure in the state in last 40 days. In fact his flagship healthcare reform, “Mohalla Clinics” have been shut all these days. They are good for nothing. Then what changed? Why did he not say the same thing a month ago? Because like Mr. Gandhi and some others he was also looking at Covid-19 pandemic as an opportunity. They wanted to see how BJP handles this crisis and pin it on the government when it fails. They knew that the population density of India is way too high to contain a highly contagious virus like SARS-COV-2 that spreads by cough and sneeze. They started counting number of deaths at the very beginning because they were sure that government would be able to control it.

So what changed? Two things. First, since the BJP government controlled the fatalities other political parties need to find other ways to unsettle the government. And second, once a revenue surplus state is now on the verge of bankruptcy. Delhi  and Mr. Kejriwal have joined the likes of Kerala and Sashi Tharoor, who you can find with a begging bowl every other year. Just a year ago Sashi Tharoor went to the UN begging for the funds. I understand it for Kerala, because their “Kerala Development Model” is such. But Delhi was a surplus state, what happened? Let me start with the second change.

If you remember a month or two ago, just before Delhi Assembly elections, Mr. Kejriwal had put Delhi on sale. The Delhi government allocated a whooping Rs 1790 crores for the free electricity scheme up to 200 units. Free water costed Rs 400 crore for one year, the number of subscribers for this would only increase with every year. Why? Because the population increases every year. The Delhi government sanctioned Rs 150 crore and Rs 140 crore for free bus rides and free metro rides i.e. a total of Rs 290 crores. Moreover, this is the case when Delhi Jal Board and Delhi Transport corporation have outstanding loans of more than Rs 26,000 crores and Rs 11,000 crores respectively as of March, 2018. You should not be surprised to see DJB and DTC needing a humongous bailout package like BSNL and Air India do that.

Must read: Is BSNL Crisis a product of 2G Scam?

The Supreme Court also criticized free fare scheme and warned the government about spending the tax money on freebies. When some people questioned the freebies, he confidently said: our government is not corrupt and so there is a lot of money; Delhi is a surplus state. What he cleverly hid from the people was that Delhi’s surplus has been reducing at a great rate, at its peak, this was Rs 10,642 crore in 2010-11. This has come down to Rs 4,465 crore in 2018-19. Further, he also hid from the public that his government has been decreasing the share of capital expenditure. The capital expenditure indicates allocation of resources for asset creation. It was Rs 11,685 crore in 2013-14 and is reduced to Rs 7,173 crore in 2017-18. Good luck to those who have been expecting new infrastructure in the state. Be it healthcare or otherwise. You can go through the CAG report on state finances for Delhi to verify what I am saying is correct or not, the report is available on internet.

Moreover the saddest part is that if a state like Delhi that has a per capita income three times the national average, starts like this what happens to the poor states? What happens if there is a war with Pakistan? Because politicians like Kejriwal and Tharoor instead of contributing towards the cause would be found complaining about the lack of funds; and say we are dying. Instead of strengthening India they would be pulling it back.

But he is an ex revenue officer, he knows all this. Still he does not give a damn about these things. Why? Because he is more interested in expanding and becoming a national party  rather than focus on Delhi. Delhi is just a rung of a ladder, that would become useless for Mr. Kejriwal once his goals are achieved. You should read my articles: Delhi: Collateral Damage for nation building!!! and Delhi’s Bermuda Triangle.

If you were paying attention to the tiny details in his speeches for the past two or three months you should have seen the migrant crisis in Delhi coming beforehand. Before I move on to the specifics of his speeches, let me ask you some questions. Did you see Arvind Kejriwal and his MLAs coming on TV every other day and claiming that the government is feeding lakhs of poor people? They would come and say hundreds of schools have been turned into shelters, lakhs and lakhs of people are being fed every day. Correct me if I am wrong here. Did they not? Did Kejriwal not say: “We feed around 10 lakh persons every day and have provided free ration to 75 lakh persons

If this was the case why are migrants leaving?

Now either they were lying the state authorities ate up all the funds and donations that were to be used to feed these people or the migrants are going for some other reason.

I would like to believe it to be the latter. The migrants are/were subtly asked to leave. I have been noticing since early January this year that Arvind Kejriwal in his speeches has been referring to the “outsiders from Bihar and UP” and “leave Delhi” in the same sentence. The first instance that I noticed was the NPR resolution speech given by him. He clearly mentioned: there are 20 to 40 lakhs people from Bihar and East UP living in Delhi, should I ask them to leave and get papers? Will they have to leave Delhi?  I even wrote an article at the significance of that resolution. There is no legal significance of anti-CAA resolution passed by any state, but it has only one significance: political. Have look at my article: AAP’s no-NRC resolution & a new narrative.

Even the recent speech where he said we have to live with Coronavirus and there is no revenue. He did not fail to mention that the people will leave, there is no work.

Why does he want the people to leave Delhi and go back to Bihar and neighboring areas? What is in for him?

He is eyeing Bihar Elections that are due in October this year. This why he is pushing people back to Bihar and neighboring areas and insinuating that it is BJP that is the reason they have to go back to Bihar, be in the case of CAA-NPR-NRC or be it the extended lock-down. AAP is going to contest in Bihar for the very first time. Shatrughan Sinha, who has been jumping parties like one hops in a hopscotch (you know the game right?), is the Bihar state chief for AAP. The party aims to capitalize on anti-BJP sentiment.

You might even argue as to how this small number of migrants can possibly influence the politics of a state with a population of more than 12 crores and more than 7 crore voters. You are correct, these small number of migrants won’t affect, but the people these migrants are going to, will make a huge difference. For instance, if your brother comes from a different place all broken and says xyz party is a bad party, I am unemployed because of the party, would you vote for xyz? Would your neighbors vote for xyz when they come to know about your brother? They don’t want the same thing happening to them. In rural areas the entire village is closely linked to each other and would not vote for xyz party. Now, they would make a difference won’t they?

Arvind Kejriwal invented this scheme of mass exodus in the name of coronavirus and the other parties are taking a cue from Delhi. The First few Shramik special trains planned were — Nasik (Maharashtra) to Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Aluva (Kerala) to Bhubaneswar (Odisha), Nasik (Maharashtra) to Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Jaipur (Rajasthan) to Patna (Bihar) and Kota (Rajasthan) to Hatia (Jharkhand). More trains could be run depending on requests from the State governments. Did you notice the “From” state ? It is Maharashtra and Rajasthan, Congress ruled. Sonia Gandhi claims to be paying the fare for the migrants when there is no fare being charged from the migrants. Why? Because Congress also has stake in the Bihar Elections and is highly interested in unsettling BJP ruled government at the center. These migrant workers have become the latest vote bank.

They started it and now there is a complete chaos. It is very difficult to see a pattern now. We might like Kejriwal or might not like him, but the fact is that he did not inherit political empire built by his forefathers. Whatever he did (good or bad is another topic), he did it by himself. Arvind Kejriwal is the most dangerous politician in today’s India because of his selfish goals that are taking precedence over the state that he rules. He does not give a damn about anything. He is way ahead of his contemporaries like Rahul Gandhi or Uddhav Thackery. He can literally dissolve them in water and drink them like a shake whenever he feels like.

This migrant crisis is nothing but a way to create anger against the central government, an attempt to unsettle the ruling coalition. If you agree to what I said, please do share the content, talk about the various points that highlighted with other people. It is imperative that more and more people are made aware of the dirty politics played in the name of coronavirus.  The more you share the article, the more people read it and the more people are able to see the underlying truth.

Thanks for reading!!!

Painted red

In the recent train mishap in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, 16 people were killed which is far more than deaths due to COVID-19 in twenty one states and union territories. After an argument with their contractor, the migrant workers decided to go back home on foot. Following the railway tracks amidst the nationwide lockdown, restricting the movement without a pass, they would have never imagined that the city of Ajanta caves will be painted red with their blood. Exhausted, tired and misinformed that no trains were running in the lockdown period, they slept on railway tracks. They slept for the last time, not on the bed but the stones, their heads not on the pillow but iron rails. How should we categorize these deaths; COVID, accident, workers own mistakes, authorities’ apathy or an act of god.

According to the Global Migration Report 2020, published by International Organization for Migration, India has 17.5 million people living outside the country and remitting 78.6 billion dollars. On the other hand, as per the Economic Survey 2017, the movement within national boundaries is far greater than movement beyond the shores. The 2011 census puts a figure of 139 million for the internal migrants. With such a huge number of migrants, lack of infrastructure and unpreparedness for such a crisis, the situation is bound to worsen if the loopholes are not plugged soon.

Role of Government
Article 19 of the Indian constitution protects the rights of its citizens to move freely throughout the country. With this assurance, people keep migrating within the territory for the search of better opportunities which the government of their respective states fail to provide. Although migrants add value to the economy through their work, they are treated as a burden by the host states and it has been evident from the inhuman treatment they have received in various states in the past. Kerala is the only state in India which considers migrant welfare as a duty of the state. The nation is in a suddenly announced lockdown for more than 40 days now; running out of food, money, support and no end in sight to their plight, they desperately want to go back home. Policy announcements and government support have just made the headlines but not reached the needy ones.

PM Garib Kalyan Yojana has been envisaged to provide free ration, center-state coordination for the utilization of existing funds. Yet we have seen the cover up done by Railways over the issue of collecting ticket fares from the poor migrant workers. Transferring mere Rs. 500 in the their bank accounts will not take away their hunger and mental torture. Alas! This Rs. 500 is not enough to buy them the ticket to utopia, the so called ‘Achhe Din’. When it comes to food security and feeding the people, it is high time for implementing One nation one ration card efficiently. However, the 17 states which already part of the integrated management of PDS, Maharashtra being one among them, are suffering from implementational paralysis. The soul of politics would have rested in peace, if despite suspending MPLADS it would have been diverted to ensure food for the daily workers and labourers in the constituency. Also, PM CARES so much that CAG officials were not allowed to audit the funds as it is based on donations of individuals and organisations.

Government tried to take the concern of labourers in the account through consolidating labour laws through 4 codes but now it seems to relieve the pain of economic miscarriage and to attract the investors coming out of China, it will be relaxed in the favour of companies.

Role of Media
It should be noted that the people Killed in Maharashtra were unaware that goods and special trains are running even during the 3rd phase of lockdown. If it’s just their unawareness to be blamed no wonder why still India keeps ranking out of 100 in World press freedom index (rank 142 in 2020). There is a need for serious renovation in this 4th pillar of democracy when reporters are finding communal angles even in the spread of pandemic instead of echoing the timetable and ways to get e-Pass for safe passage from one place to another.

Role of Bureaucracy
Any policy formulation and implementation needs efficient bureaucracy and the efficiency of bird’s(bureaucrats) flight comes only when it is not iron caged. It took more than 40 days to break the traditional approach and to come up with the innovative idea of a roaster system of opening shops in UP and a token system for liquor in Delhi. Many would not have lost their job if these decisions were taken earlier boosted with many more new ideas from public consultation. In the words of Karl Marx, the bureaucrat has the world as a mere object of his action.{Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right (1843)}

Role of Society
Civic societies and NGOs have started running out of money so it comes on the shoulder of private individuals to take care of the migrants as their duty without smelling the essence of beneficence because these migrants and workers have made these metro cities where we enjoy the liberty and luxury of life, no matter if they can’t afford it. So it’s the duty of the privileged ones to pool their resources and not only help them but to treat them as an integral part of their ecosystem and behave decently that would give them moral support in this grave situation.

Technical assistance through creating a nationwide digital database of migrants to identify the beneficiaries along with Cumulative efforts has to be taken and the responsibility has to be shared among all the stakeholders whether it is government, companies, media or the individuals through grass-root implementation of policies, broadcasting the relevant information, corporate social responsibility and fundraising by the individuals to feed them properly and provide temporary shelters at the same place where they currently are and stop their migration ensuring the pandemic is contained soon.

Monsoon session of Indian Parliament- May our MPs be allowed to work from home!

The monsoon session of Indian Parliament usually begins in the month of July. The importance of the upcoming session will be extraordinary as it comes in the shadow of the great pandemic. Tackling of the pandemic is still a ‘work in process’. Unfortunately, however, some political parties in the opposition space have started politicizing the disaster. That dangerous tendency must stop and the nation meet the challenge as one solid body. The coming session holds key for that.

Six Lessons of Covid-19

By now the pandemic has exposed few serious shortcomings in the manner the country countered the corona challenge. We mention six of them.

First, the inadequacy of the public health infrastructure.

Second, chinks in the rationing system. This reveals from the fact that despite the Centre assuring free food grains to 80 crore poor Indians for 3 months, there have been countless reports of agencies and parties providing ‘reliefs’ to lakhs. In few states ruling parties are reportedly using ration as political tools against their opposition. These suggest sections of poor yet remain excluded from the system.

Third, the handling of the issue of migratory workers was poor. Lack of coordination between the Centre and the States was conspicuous.

Fourth, this pandemic has exposed how the sheer size of population made the country vulnerable. Not only it placed an unsustainable pressure on the public health facilities, but also left none in doubt that enforcing measures such as ‘social distancing norm’ is an impossibility in several high population density areas like Dharavi in Mumbai, slums in Kolkata, etc.

Fifth, it also transpired that while vast majority underwent intense sufferings due to lockdown, some groups of people driven by religious fanaticism wantonly violated the norms thereby spreading the corona infections across the country. But the governments seemed lacking in will to make these violators behave.

Sixth, this pandemic made the country view with horror as to how helplessly it depends on a very few countries, especially China, for its bulk drug needs and how, should the latter stop export, its famed pharmaceutical industry may crash posing grave health risks for crores of its people!

Only SOP can save India from complete Lockdown regime

As indicated already, the present pandemic has not yet run its full course. To add to it, one must reckon that the episode of pandemic will not likely end with Covid-19. The experience of first two decades of the present century says that several pandemics like Ebola, H5N1, SAARS, Mers-Cov, A(H7N9), Nipah and Zika to name some,  have already hit the world- on average once in every two years. The lesson is we must prepare for more challenges. Can we yet again declare countrywide lock down when the next pandemic knocks at the door? The answer is an emphatic ‘No’. India must, on the basis of the experience of Covid-19, formulate a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to put into use in future.

The nearly three months of lockdown has made most people exasperated. The nation is desperate to get relief now and avoid similar predicament in future. The key to their emancipation is in the hands of parliament. Not only must the mistakes done during Covid-19 be addressed, a template by way of SOP to deal with future challenges is equally necessary. It is in this context the country will watch with avid interest to the upcoming parliament session.

Two categories of challenges

The tasks on hand for the coming session can be grouped under two categories in terms of complexities. The first category will be easier to accomplish. For example, introduction of ‘one nation, one ration card system’ to bring every Indian within the rationing system, building up additional hospitals across the country, start diversifying sources of import of bulk drugs. The second category is political in nature but calls for urgent action. For example, population policy. This pandemic has demonstrated that it is simply impossible to tackle grave contagious pandemic with the present level of population density. Second, the nation has realized that how measures such as NPR could have helped in giving food, shelter and financial assistance to the needy in a well targeted manner. Third, the unreasonable behavior of some population groups driven by misplaced religious fundamentalism has brought the focus back on the imperative of a Uniform Civil Code, so that people across caste and creed can stand together shoulder to shoulder to meet national challenges such as the pandemic.

Clearly political consensus is need of the hour.  The political parties must rise above party politics and work together to build national consensus. The people of India will watch with keenest interest like never before the proceedings of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to understand how parties and individual members contribute to address the challenges- immediate and long term, apparent and deep.

Can parliament embrace technology?

There is no communication as yet in the public domain about how the two houses will sit in Delhi. The capital city is in the tight grip of the pandemic. In the last session, there were murmur by some members about the risk of corona infection. Clearly, the health of nearly 800 MPsof both houses are matters of high priority and cannot be compromised. At the same time, it is of supreme importance that they meet and chalk out a road map for the nation in times of such grave crisis.

Benefits of video conferencing

The solution is straightforward. The upcoming session may be held through video- conference extensively supported by technology. Though the usual heat and light that arise due to physical assembly of the members will be missed, this new mode of participation has numerous benefits. To start with, it removes the health concerns of members and reaches them the convenience of taking part in the deliberations from their convenient locations.

The other significant benefits will be: a) every member of parliament will have the benefit of expressing before the house and the nation his or her full views on a given issue to complete satisfaction without the fear of being obstructed and heckled; b) the entire proceedings will be free from disturbances such as slogan shouting, rushing to well, walkout, tearing papers, and even scuffling at times; c) the constituency of a member can make an objective assessment about the quality of participation of its representative; d) huge cost cutting which is bound to be welcome in the crisis situation.

Need for good homework

Should the government decide in favour of the proposition, it must think in advance in terms of legalities and constitutional provisions. For example, if such an arrangement requires approvals of both houses, the latter can be summoned for a day or two for that purpose and then the new system can take over enabling members to return.

There may be some challenges as well to put forth the entire course of proceedings on this technology backbone. To get a satisfactory outcome the parliamentary staff, deputy speakers and speakers may have to spend some time with the technology company. Most importantly the technology provision with regard to mode of passing of bills in a fool proof manner must be above reproach. Doing all these will take some time. If the government is serious the preparations must begin immediately.

Can technology break shackles and emancipate the nation?

The whole country wants the two houses decisively address the key issues so that India can come out of the present pandemic, convert the crisis as an opportunity to build strong infrastructure for public health and rejuvenate the economy.

In the event the government decides in favour of using the technology of video conferencing, the chances of a fruitful, constructive, and healthy deliberations on a whole range of critically important issues which were repeatedly getting obstructed in the precincts of parliament houses can be expected. From long range perspectives, this may be a very substantial gain.

It remains to be seen if the ruling regime gives a serious thought to it!

Hindu Shahi Maharaja Anandpal: The battle of Chhuchh

In a previous post titled “Hindu Shahi Maharaja Jaipal and the Islamic Invasion” we learnt about the resistance offered by the guardians of the north-west of our civilization, how a myth has been created that it was an easy path for the barbaric Islamic hordes into this ancient landmass. This post carries the events from there and describes the strong resistance put up by son and successor of Maharaja Jaipal – Anandpal.

After the self-immolation by Maharaja Jaipal, Anandpal ascended the throne in 1002 C.E. Just like his father, the king was well aware of the dangers that lurked his kingdom. Mehmud of Ghazni had been busy in subjugating the fort of Bhatiya and Multan and had even appointed a man named Nawasa Shah to oversee his conquered territories in India. Nawasa was a new convert to Islam, earlier named Sukhpal, he was a maternal grandson of Jaipal and had been “taken prisoner at the battle of Peshawar in 1001-02 C.E.” Although, later he had tried to renounce Islam and rule as an independent ruler, however he remained unsuccessful. But, discussion of these events are for another day.

Bottomline is Mehmud knew that the Hindu Shahis were “the most formidable stumbling block” if he wanted to invade further inside India and Anandpal was aware of the situation. In 1008-09 C.E., Mahmud invaded the kingdom with all his might. Maharaja had demanded help from other rulers of India. Rulers of Gwalior, Kannauj, Kalinjar didn’t dissappoint and provided some help, some aid to the Maharaja. Effort was quite comprehensive to face the invader.

Mehmud had made his own preparations. “With back to the Khyber Pass firmly secured and made safe for retreat in case of defeat, he entrenched his main army in the plain of Chhachh near Hazru on the east of the Indus.” But, there was a long wait. Both the armies weren’t ready to make the first move. For nearly forty days, no one moved and the armies remai

Unforutnately, the victory that was firmly under the hands of Hindu Shahis was taken away. The wounded elephant of Maharaja Anandpal lost his control and fled the battlefield, taking the Maharaja with himself. A panic ran through the forces and affected their morale. The thought of their leader leaving the battlefield created chaos in the army and the engegement broke. Many of these soldiers were killed in the retreat. Waihand, the seat of the Hindu Shahis was captured and the entire upper valley of Indus was brought under the invading armies of the barbarians. Anandpal lost a lot of territory and after a few years was succeeded by his son Trilochanpal.

While resisting the Islamic onslaught there were various kinds of reactions by our rulers. They certainly made it very hard for the invaders to succeed, even completely foiling their earlier attempts in seventh and eighth centuries. There was never a time during or after the Islamic invasions when one or the other attempts were not being made by our rulers or even the general public to free themselves of the barbarians. Many were successful and the result was that the Islamic armies could make a solid seat for their conquered landmass only in late 12th century and we should never forget the glorious empire of Vijaynagar, indefatigable resistance by Rajputs, the Maratha empire, the Sikh empire, the Oriya Kingdom, the Ahoms and many others about whom I hope to write in near future. Some compromised but such bad apples are found everywhere and in every civilization. Some did blunders but many of them provided heroic resistance even though loosing in the end like the Hindu Shahis.

What we as a country need is to learn about these attempts, every resistance which was successful so that we learn what our ancestors were capable of, every unsuccessful attempt so that we learn from those mistakes. By not acknowledging our mistakes, we our destined to repeat them but by not acknowledging our glorious resistance and our victories we our destined to become pale shadows of our ancestors, suffering from the inferiority complex about our capabilities. Unfortunately, even after 1947, we neither accepted our mistakes nor our victories when what we desperately needed was to avoid both these scenarios. But, a new dawn is upon us and by the grace of devas, we still have time to learn and correct. After all, we still are fighting similar enemies, outside our boundaries and inside.

More than that meets the eye: Weeding out fake news

In wake of the current global crisis, governments across the federal structure have an up-hill task in getting the Covid-19 situation under control. But now having said that, the situation of ‘fake news’ making rounds on the media, social networking sites and cross-platform messaging applications has left the governments with their hands-full.

Addressing the issue of migrant labourers, the division bench of the Supreme Court categorically mentions in its Order dated 31.03.2020 about the foul hand fake news is playing amidst the crisis. The Apex Court pinned the mass hysteria created amongst the labour class to look for greener pastures, on circulation of fake news on the media and online portals for circulating preposterous news about an extended lock-down (“up-to 90 days”). The turn of events has prompted the Supreme Court to advise the media houses against publishing fake news but to rely on information and guidelines published by the Government on the situation from time to time.

It was widely reported after that the migrant labourers’ situation at the borders of Delhi could be traced back to misinformation which was circulated by certain bigots undermining and disdaining the efforts of the Government in dealing with this unprecedented situation. In woke of such an unimaginable and untenable situation, it is imperative that the Government leaves no stones unturned in providing assistance to the helpless migrants. Even the apex institute for medical research, Indian Council for Medical Research (“ICMR”), was not spared from fake news making rounds against it. From being accused of overpaying for the test kits to failure in its part to co-ordinate with the Centre.

The prevalence of fake news related to the Covid-19 situation is used by countries to justify new misinformation legislation, which could be true with India as well. The Government is mulling to bring changes to the current legal framework by proposing an amendment to the Information Technology Intermediary Guidelines Rules, 2011. The proposal to enact the Information Technology Intermediary Guidelines (Amendment) Rules, 2018 is in the pipeline, vehemently in pursuit to take down fake news. The proposed amendment calls for steeper penalty on web portals and phone application which fail to comply with the   proposed framework. The Government has been pursuing specific provisions under the Information Technology Act, 2000, which in the long run could be a better solution, considering that provisions under Disaster Management Act, 2005 and the Indian Penal Code have proved to be inadequate to deal with the propagandas and misinformation being circulated on electronic medium.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (“MoEIT”) is making a sincere effort by issuing an advisory to bring in line all the social media platforms from unfurling false information, and putting the onus on the intermediaries to remove any fake news/ misinformation which are likely to cause panic among the public. Temporary efforts such as introducing “Saathi Chatbot”, keeping the citizens updated with the latest news and myth-busters relating to Covid-19 might not be enough in the long run to keep the citizens away from misinformation.

Moving beyond the realms of understanding fake news from the perspectives of the pandemic, we must bear in mind its ability to polarise opinions amongst the population, on issues such as policy making, elections, genocide tailored to benefit certain malignant influencers in the society. The Government of India, must take cues from Singapore in enacting a specific piece of legislation to regulate the freedom of press from spurring fake news and false alarms and while doing so it is cardinal to not overlook the rights concerning speech and expression, and to carry on the business, which are pedestal to democracy.

Is novel coronavirus a ‘Dodo hunter’ or boosts immunity, cause ‘organ suicide’ and death?

0

Are we not hunting the ‘shadow of a ghost’ in the name of chasing novel coronavirus?

Should we not ask the above fundamental question, at least now? Is the poor novel coronavirus the real killer of man or else it simply boosts our immunity (cytokine storm) and that results the death?

The above question has already been asked by British scientists if not ICMR, Niti Aayog etc., and also has been answered by then with reasonable scientific evidence. The details were captured under the title “New coronavirus not the real killer: it’s the patient’s immune system damaging vital organs”  https://www.euronews.com/2020/04/09/understanding-covid-19-the-unknown-disease-with-multiple-faces

Today, May 11, 2020, Times of India has reported the conversation of Honourable Health Secretary of Tamil Nadu Dr Beela Rajesh, IAS with Union Health Minister Shri. Dr Harhwardhan that the state do not believe that all those who died in the state were due to COVID 19 but possibly due to severe or acute co-morbidity conditions. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/govt-doesnt-believe-covid-killed-all-victims/articleshow/75665224.cms

The above statement made by Dr Beela Rajesh should be seen also from the premise of scientific understanding of the state of Tamil Nadu because the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Shri Eddapadi Palaniswami (EPS) has appointed Dr Beela Rajesh as Health Secretary may be due to her in-depth knowledge in medicine.  She is a medical graduate as well.

The disease supposedly caused by novel coronavirus- called COVID 19 shows several clinical faces or manifestations. The big question is how a pathogen can trigger all such diverse clinical problems and at the same time also can remain silent in large proportion of the population?

Only if we ask such questions, the scientist Sherlock Holmes in each one of us would emerge to detect the real killer.

If we refuse to ask such questions, we will continue to chase the virus, impose lockdown, destroy economy, life and livelihood, hunt people who may carry the RNA of the virus, quarantine them, declare containment zones…. etc.

The accepted medical norms is that all those asymptomatic carriers of either RNA of the virus or the live virus can be a vector of contagion; harmful to the society like the virus.

What a bizarre notion we have cultivated so far. If we are going to identify and quarantine all such individuals in our large population means, that would be a big joke and nothing else. When the virus has already reached the community level, the task to accomplish for our government is humongous and if our government ever adventure such endeavour and then continue the lockdown that would be the biggest tragedy any elected government can commit to its country.

There are three distinct phases has been recognized among people who contract the virus

  1. Viral phase: where the virus multiplies rapidly in the respiratory system and may or may not produce symptoms of common flue and then the problem would disappear in 6-10 days.  Almost 80-98% people are likely to fall in the above group
  2. The pulmonary phase: where some patients might develop a specific type of pneumonia involving both lungs resulting in respiratory distress
  3. Severe phase:  where some patients would develop ‘cytokine storm’, an uncontrolled inflammatory response of immune system, resulting in death

Interestingly the severe cases of COVID 19 do not seem to show high viral load then who is the real killer becomes the real question. It is the immune reaction that makes many organs commit suicide; fails to function and the patient dies. The reason is cytokine storm and that is what has been documented until now.

What the scientists have documented so far is “The inflammatory response is a natural immune system reaction. It’s necessary to repair cell damage. With normal pneumonia, germs damage the pulmonary tissue and the immune system generates an inflammatory response to stop it. The immune system ‘kills’ some cells to repair the damaged tissue”.

“What is happening now with coronavirus is that instead of sending a few cells it’s sending tonnes of cells that generate an uncontrolled inflammatory response, not only in lungs but can be widespread in the body”.

Does that mean, novel coronavirus boost the immunity? Then what is the logic and science of Modi advocating immune boosters from grandma’s kitchen healing practice to combat the pandamic?

Now the question is how we can mercilessly crucify the poor novel coronavirus as the killer and chase such a rapidly spreading virus? How wise are we to impose nationwide lockdown to prevent the virus spread? What effort ICMR has taken to understand the virus in India?

Should we not think the novel coronavirus may be a mere ‘Dodo hunter’?

Dodo was a flightless bird once roamed in Mauritius Island. The Dutch sailors easily hunted the bird because the bird was unaware of human beings as a threat to its life and the bird was also unaware of any predators. Does that mean the Dutch sailors were great hunters of Dodo bird?

Similarly lots of people have died of COVID 19 but more due to violent immune reaction than due to virus. The virus might have abated the immune reaction but the virus does not seem to have acted as murderer in strict legal sense based on the scientific details available so far.

The question is whom are we trying to save from novel coronavirus?  Who are those susceptible people who might develop cytokine storm due to the entry of the virus is difficult to predict. Age, various co-morbidity conditions etc., are considered to favour the virus to boost the ‘self’ immune response that ultimately causes the death. Then should we not focus to protect the susceptible than lockdown the entire country, kill the life and livelihood of millions?

Certainly we are fighting the shadow of a ghost. Ghost itself is not real. Imagine the shadow of such unreal ghost that we are chasing.

The price that we pay for such an exercise is horrible and decaying.

Are we not butchering our economy, life and livelihood by locking down our country?

Novel coronavirus wants to escape from Homo sapiens but we are trapping the virus from escape. Let us open the door, let each one of us be the humble exist door for the virus so that the virus would go to its world.

Generation-gap and the Buddhism

It is a fact that Buddhism emerged to solve the practical problems of human life as Siddharth was moved after watching the pain and suffering of an ill, old, a corpus and behind it lamenting, weeping people in deep sorrow. He considered it a perennial problem and set out for seeking the reason and remedy of it. His analysis to it and remedy for it is universal in character. Though with the change of time, place, climate and culture the problems change, but a living philosophy tackles all these, solve them and sublimates the human conditions. It makes an individual a better individual and transforms the society in a harmonious whole.

Since I am a student of Buddhism I feel that Buddhism has the potentiality to tackle even the contemporary problems of the complex life as well as varied human situations in a better way. The present paper is based on my existential experience that hinges towards a situation of Generation- gap and the feeling of alienation amongst the old generation. We know several such instances through the newspapers TV. and very many other social media. The owner of Redmond Company is living alone with his wife in a rented house as his only son has ousted him after he handed over his property and his business to his son. An old women’s skeleton was found when his lonely son came from America and opened his flat’s door. And very many such incidents are seen in the society. My paper starts with an incident of my life that made me to ponder over the problem of generation gap and the feeling of being alienated in the family as well as its reason and remedy as found in the Buddha’s teaching and preaching..

I woke up very early in the morning, started for a walk and was welcomed by the fresh, fragrant and soothing mild breeze of the east. The chirping of the birds, Koo-Koo melodious sound of the cuckoo, moo of the cow and morning sounds of very many animals and birds were presenting the music of divine orchestra and their movement on the earth and sky were like a divine painting or colas on the canvas of the nature. The cumulative effects of all these made me light and fresh from within. After coming back to my house I found a missed call of my mother. I called her back. I heard her very feeble voice, saturated with pain of loneliness. She talked to me for a good length of time. She was concerned for her loneliness and her offspring’s negligent behaviour towards her, as all the time she rings her son, daughter and grandsons and granddaughters but most of the time her call remains unattended and if received a brief talk takes place. Even at Kolkata she feels lonely as both her daughter and son-in-law do not stay in the house in the day time because of their job. In the evening they come exhausted. After a brief talk they retire on the bed. Next day again very early in the morning the same routine is repeated. My brother is in army and posted in Kashmir, very disturbed and sensitive place from security point of view, and he has hardly any time to talk to her, though he is very caring and sensitive towards maintaining the relations and he loves her mother too.

However, consoling her I replied very sympathetically, “Our children too have grown adults, earning and are standing on their own feet, engrossed in their own job and their children, rendering us alone and isolated. This is the way of the world, which has become the ethos of the global society today.” Though I said it instantly and spontaneously but it is the bruit fact of the modern mechanical society. People are in huff and hurry amidst the hue and cry of the world. No one has time and patience to listen to the others because of our busy schedule and self-centered nature. But my talk with my mother reminded me an article in Chantudui.com, a digital journal of Pure Mind Buddhism of Vietnam, entitled “ANSWERS TO DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY OF A FILIPINOCATHOLIC” wherein Mr. Boying Baguio, a character, complained regarding the ill treatment of his children against him. This compelled me to ponder over this modern problem and search the reason remedy of this global tragedy through the Buddhist way of life. Since, the Buddha has propounded the Four Noble Truths of The Suffering, There is cause of suffering, The Suffering can be eliminated and there is a path leading to the cessation of sufferings. I shall like to analyze and interpret this modern problem in the Buddhist fashion.

  1. There is suffering: In this context the so called ill treatment of the younger generation towards their elders and parent, is the suffering in hand. :- This is the basic fact that the good number of younger generation today are ignoring their parent and the older generation (if not insulted), and the old people in the family feel ignored, isolated and alienated in their own family. They feel it an ill treatment and callousness for them. On the contrary children feel forlorn and thrown away in this world even after parental backup as their expectations are not being achieved even after a tough struggle. And whatever they achieve they give the credit to their own hard labour, acumen, strength, and struggle not to the parental grooming and support. And thus, the difference in their attitude and behaviour is creating a chasm in their thought of the two generations culminating into a gap that is technically known as generation gap in the modern terminology. Since the so called, expectations of the both are frustrated and thus they suffer. This is the greatest suffering of the modern global society, as suffering is nothing but impended volition.

I too happen to meet a young boy in a foreign land who came to attend a socio-religious and academic conclave from America to his motherland. While talking to him I came to learn that his grandparents are still alive and living in another city alone, which is not too far from the place he was staying. On asking whether he will go to meet his grandparent with whom he has not met for very many years, to my great amazement, he emotionlessly replied, ‘No’. He further explained he had paucity of time and money both. I was wonder struck. Morals, customs, family norms and traditions as well as socio-religious institutions that are older than human memory are melting under our eyes like superficial organs of our society.

The family that nursed and cherished the basis of social order has broken into pieces. Homes that were built for sacrifices to shelter the sons and daughters are silent and desolate. The children’s loyalty is scattered to the wondering task. Oh, the father and mother are left alone in their black houses with vacant chairs and every room is echoing with the absence of the family sound. Value, virtue and human sentiments have evaporated like the water droplets on the red hot iron. To me this is one one of the greatest tragedy of the modern man, which comprises the First Noble Truth in Buddhist terminology.

II. There is cause of suffering:-  Now let us consider how the great transition through which we are passing through, that has been entrapped in a drastic change in our our morals, ways of thinking and acting, as well as normative concepts and precepts. As the matter of fact, the change of morals in a global society is an endless change of single personalities stung on one the other. It consists in the intra-working of the groups grasping in such a manner that young and old react differently on a single stimuli, morally opposed to each other. Now the million Dollar question is, what is that sufficient cause of this unceasing becoming in which we find ourselves involved in the ethical dilemma? And the answer is the rapid industrialization and globalization along with some other economic conditions. Let us examine it.

When we caste our glance over the history of human civilization we come across two profound transitions that caused moral changes. One was passage from hunting to agriculture and other was passage from agriculture to industry. And in each case the moral codes, which served the older society’s welfare were transformed chaotically under new regime.  Man’s transformation from hunting to tillage created a demand for new virtues and moral codes of conducts. Industriousness, thrift and peace were considered more vital than bravery, violence and war of hunting age. Men women and children worked together in a farm hence cooperation kindness and respect for elders, love, compassion and discipline emerged as new values. Status of women changed. Now she became the pivot of the family. Children became the helping hand of their parent and the grandparents, the day their adolescence was complete. Thus our moral codes of conduct are rooted in the rural milieu. Man matured on the farm at the very early age- both in mind and self-support. At the age of twenty he understood all the tasks of his life, and his life’s struggle started.

This agricultural normative continued for about two thousand years. Then suddenly factories appeared. Men women and children began to leave home and family authority and unity, to work as individual and individually paid. Children attain their maturity very late. They are groomed in crèche, Received basic training in the school and technical education in the colleges. By the time they become able to earn an income they have to leave their parental authority to the freedom of irresponsible individual life. Even if they did not go off of their own accord the call of job and wage, the migration markets and factories and trade tear them from home and the normative reign. And thus the old agricultural moral has fallen to pieces, and the urban world ceases to be judged by it any more.

Now the basic cause of the moral change is the industrial revolution. It is instrumental in almost every modern moral flux. It weakened the moral influence of the family and led the replacement of puritan asceticism and restrain on every pleasure and perversion. The rise of science and technology along with Darwinian fever attacked over religious belief. When the youth found that religion and the elders are denouncing their modern pleasure they found thousands reasons in science for denouncing religion.

The fetal factor in the change of ethics and social norm is the First World War. It broke down our habit of cooperation and peace, which had been framed under the reign of industry and trade. It accustomed men to brutality and promiscuity. It returned thousands of men to their countries as Centres of moral infection. It cheapened the value of life by its wholesale killing and prepared the psychology of gangs and crimes. Vietnam was a worst hit state of this world war.

Last but not the least the invention of TV mobile and others I. T. instruments have made the human relations strained. While watching T. V. serials or news; surfing internet, Facebook, or chatting on Messenger youths ignore their family members and friend as unwanted hindrance. Mobile disturbs our moral sense organs too. In our brain system there is an Insula which generates compassion, love, affection and sympathy in us. The regular use of mobile affects it adversely. Those who use it extensively start losing the moral feelings and often become immune of it. This is the reason that youths, all over the world are becoming indifferent of moral reasoning and human sentiments.

III. The Annihilation of Suffering: Finally it can be said that there may be very many causes of our moral change in the rapid transit from farm and house to factories and city streets, but we must try to understand the young and the coming generation, which have and are replacing us very rapidly. Their lives and problems are very different as they are in the grip of industrial revolution. It has transformed their custom, their garb, their work, and their conduct. Hence it will be unfair to judge them through the majoring rod of our old moral codes of conduct derived from the age of yore.

On the contrary the hard fact is that the moods of most of our elders have not changed. Their senility finds it hard to forgive the youths. However, it seems desirable for the elders to find some time to contemplate upon the variability of Good and try to understand the fluid relativity of morals. Otherwise it will be gross unfair to them. The words ‘Morality’ and ‘Immorality’ are in flux between mooring and the new ones yet to be found. We do not know what they should mean and how they may be redefined to help us understand the human conduct in an industrial and urban era.

It is apparent from the above discussion that today most of the people live their life as carelessly as they do, without caring others. They do not rightly know the conditions in which they find themselves. Rather they persuade themselves that they have emerged out of absolute nothingness of their own. At the time of death they will again disappear without leaving any trace. This ignorance born egotism has made them not to care others specially the older generation. These hurt the elders and make them prejudice for the Youngers and they reciprocate accordingly. This continuity of a chain of reactions is the basic cause of suffering between the two generations.

Today we are standing between two worlds, one is dead and the other is hardly born. Our fate is a chaos for a generation. We are conscious like Confucius that moralities of restraint and fear have lost their hold upon the modern man. There is a need of new natural moral code that is based on intelligence and be able to convince both, the older and the younger generation. The time has come to scrutinize our assumptions and our habits in order to build for ourselves a system of life and thought which may be consistent with the experience and the demand of the day. It is again very difficult rather impossible to slash down our all ethical codes of conducts declaring them obsolete and reconstruct a new one. It is again very unwise and impossible to roll back the entire industrial developments and to arrive at the agriculture age or rural milieu. Now it is a million Dollar question how to arrive at the solution to reconcile the problem of the modern man and their generation gap.

IV. Path leading to annihilation of suffering: For solving this basic modern problem one will have to look into their real position and thereby recognize with sufficient clearness that they are aimlessly and without plain wandering through the world in all its heights and depth under the perpetual self-delusion. Now the time has come to make them recognize the possibility of escaping forever from this circle of suffering. This is the Fourth Noble Truth which constitutes the cap and crown of the mighty structure of the Buddhism. But in this newly emerged situation, Buddha’s Eightfold Path, though universally accepted a perfect path for eradication of sufferings, become austere and difficult for a modern man to follow in a normal way. The mind is considered basically responsibly for all sorts of problems.

Today most of the persons are having stress and strain. The Buddha was in know of this fact that it is very difficult to control and purify it. Secondly, it is again very tough to undergo the meditational practices. But the Buddha gave a clue when he says that a wise man should guard the mind as guarded mind is conducive to happiness. The Tibetan yoga and our revered Guru have developed this idea and provided some easy steps for skipping away from mental stress and strain and keeping the mind in the congenial atmosphere.

As we know that mind is fickle and makes a man restless. It hardly remains in the present. It roams either in past or in future. Even if it is in the present it roams in the different directions, now here now there, now on fictitious and adventitious ideas. And the basic need for the happy life is to live consciously in the present. For that our Guru has advised to walk on the Mani Mantra. If it is followed honestly the mind will not wonder here and there as well inauspicious thoughts will not erupt. Even if it crops up it will be driven out slowly and stealthily. With the absence of evil thoughts the stress and strain will be release and mind will become calm and cozy. With this mind set one will never irritate other as well get irritated. This will make one’s attitude mild and positive, instead of pessimistic. Our Guru always say to come out of the pessimistic bent of mind as it take a person in a perilous condition.

Secondly, Tibetan Yoga provides a unique method for generating compassion for all the things and the beings of the world. Since the secret of one’s future is hidden in one’s daily routine, Guru has suggested certain change in our everyday life. He has asked us that before doing anything you must pray for the wellbeing of others whether it is man or any other creature of the universe. For instance we are asked to think or speak before eating, “May all sentient beings have the Buddha food.” While drinking, “May all the sentient beings may have the Buddha Amrit” and so on.

The regular practice of all these radically transforms ones personality. Unbounded compassion is generated in him. It also creates sympathy and empathy for other. If both the generation is full of compassion, sympathy and empathy both will understand each other and there will not a problem of generation gap. Their sympathetic ray will unite all the sentient beings in one organic whole.  This practice, on the one hand, unites the entire members of the biotic community and feel their pain and pleasure on the other, it relieves them from their past ignorance based Karmic fruition.

Once our Holy Guru Sri Dalai Lama Jee has said, “In order to create a positive action we must develop a positive vision.” Accordingly  the founder of Pure mind Buddhism suggests the proper and regular study of the Buddhist text, Buddha’s teaching and preaching besides observing Samath and Vipassana. These will drive out negativity from our mind and create a proper and positive vision wherein there is no scope of discrepancy in our thought and action as well our mild behaviour will create a congenial atmosphere in the house and outside. One will be incapable of doing any wrong. His mind will be saturated with pious thinking.

To conclude with I would like to quote one verse of the Dhammapada; “Refrain from committing any sin, do good and auspicious work. Purify one’s mind. May all sentient being be at peace and happiness.

How media and vested interest group destroyed our Army’s perfectly working, very effective Covert Intel Unit: Part-2

0

[Disclaimer: Each of the information provided in this article is in Public Domain and none is prohibited or restricted by law. It’s just that they are scattered at 1000 places, I tried my best to pin it all together in one article]

This is Part 2 (Sad Part ) of Two Part article on how an effective Army Intel Unit was destroyed by Media and Vested interest group. Please read Part 1 of the article here – Part 1

MEDIA as a Fourth State

Media and Journalist are said to serve the role of a “fourth estate”, acting as a watchdog on the various social, political and economic activities around us. It is also a very noble profession and is a great way to do public service, to have an impact on the community. Or is it really, in today’s context?

Well! There were days when great men in this profession like Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, compelled the President of most powerful country in the planet to resign. Their work can be considered the finest piece of investigative journalism ever.

Journalism was also very effectively used as a tool during our freedom struggle, by our very own greats like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Subramania Iyer, Motilal Ghosh, Sisir Kumar Ghosh to name a few.

Lot has changed since then, media instead of being the fourth pillar of democracy has been used by establishment and vested interest groups to peddle their agenda and try to change public perception.

A whole country has been invaded and pulled towards war just because of a fake news piece, like in case of Judith Miller. That story of her in NYT later turned out to be based on fake inputs. Unlike our journalists here in India, that news story virtually ended Judith Miller’s career as respectable media personality, career that started in mid 1977. Here we have had media personalities caught indulging in political lobbying for cabinet formation. A separate book can be written on the treachery they did during the time of crisis and war.

Now the penetration of internet and subsequently the social media has been a big roadblock to these big Media Houses who solely hold the public discourses once. Also there is a certain rift among Media and journalist based on ideology and bias which is a good thing for common people. Competition always helps, right?

THE FALL of TSD- Betrayal

There is an old saying…
When the sea clashes with the rocks, it is the clams that suffer!

While TSD men were doing what they do best, diligently working, putting their own life at risks for the country, but all was not calm on the Delhi Front.

General V.K. Singh and the Defence Ministry were already in an ugly public scuffle regarding his age row (1951 instead of 50). If his date of birth was corrected, he would get to serve till March 31, 2013 instead of 2012 which would have implications for the succession plan in the Army as many top brass from whom the next Chief is to be selected would retire by then. It was perceived that General wanted to scuttle the chances of General Bikram Singh and the incumbent General Dalbir Singh Suhag succeeding him, for reasons best known to his conscience.

Now, General VK Singh was a clean man with impeccable record who during his tenure had made a mission to rid army of any sort of corruptions. He complained to AK Anthony, then Defense Minister, that he had been offered 14 crore bribe to push the deal to buy 600+ TATRA Trucks by one retired Lt Gen Tejinder Singh, who was working as an arms dealer now. Army already owned 7000 TATRA trucks purchased over the years.

Now many claimed in their article that Trucks are of substandard quality. As a petrol-head I know for sure that TATRA, are the best trucks there is for Off-highway job as well as highways. These are the only trucks that have been designed for Offroad capabilities right from its drawing boards, and On-road version are modified-light version of actual factory model. Usually its the other way round for other manufacturers. It has very low maintenance due to its unique design. Discussion of which can span a whole article (need a separate auto-tech article on this so layman can understand, maybe later).

BEML assembled Tatra 816 proving its mettle during Flood rescue work.

But TATRA doesn’t come cheap and they are used for specific purpose. Majority of ARMY jobs can be entrusted to our home built cheap and robust TATA713 or Stallion. In layman’s term why buy an Innova when job can be done with a Swift.

However it can be labelled as a scam because of the price we bought it for and the funny route taken to procure it. (Needs a separate dedicated article on this also)

General VK Singh refused to sanction the deal and stalled the procurement order approved by his predecessor. Being an ex-army man himself Lt. Gen (retired) Tejinder Singh, the said arms dealer used his connections to dig deep for any muck against the General that he may had. So the TSD, the brain child of The General and Lt.Gen Loomba was the first victim. He bribed a clerk named Shyam Das to get vital information about TSD and to make VK Singh fall in line. It’s said that the arms dealer tried to blackmail him that he will leak the information to press about TSD and its workings.

When General V.K. Singh didn’t budged an inch, then came the role of Media Crooks. Best example how a sacred profession being used as a tool. Now you would be a blithering idiot of highest order to believe these services comes for free or there is no quid pro quo.

Running smear campaign against General VK Singh just started. He was accused by AK Anthony that he, himself didn’t want to pursue the 14 crore bribery issue. Ironically it was defense minister that revealed the name of retired General Tejinder Singh as the said arms dealer in the parliament itself.

Military was accused of using state of the art listening device to tap phone conversations around South Block. Media also revealed the project under which such state of the art Electronic Warfare Equipment were procured in 2010. Which country in their right mind reveals such crucial information to press?

By this time General VK Singh was retired and Bikram Singh had taken over as CoAS. The whole brunt of the tussle was about to fall on fine men of TSD. And few men were happy obviously with the change in guards.

When General Bikram Singh took office he disbanded the TSD and also ordered an investigation into its workings. The Army HQ also wanted an inquiry into the TSD by the CBI. Funny, that Army Intel Unit being investigated by a civilian agency. Antony rejected the demand, Good thought at least for once!

But washing the dirty linen was already in front of the glaring eyes of public. Obviously Media played a major role in this muck slinging.

TSD was blamed for misusing funds, using those funds to bribe one minister of J&K to topple the Omar Abdullah govt. History has it, we have the most disciplined and moral Army in the planet. Never in the dreams, can anyone think of Indian Army meddling in political affairs.

Previously a certain PIL was filed in court by an NGO known as JKHSO (Jammu and Kashmir Humanitarian Service Organisation) for an encounter in Jangalat Mandi involving General Bikram Singh in which he was awarded a gallantry medal in 2001. The general was injured in the said firefight. The Army’s version was that a Pakistani militant was killed in the encounter, while his family claimed that he was Kashmiri laborer. In April 2012, the Supreme Court dismissed the PIL which cleared his path for promotions for the post of Army Chief. The blame for this PIL was put on TSD shoulders that they funded that NGO in tune of 2.38 Crores. Funny that this news was flared in headings as soon as the retired General shared stage with our PM Modi during and ex-servicemen rally in Haryana. Obviously, some vested interest was trying to create a rift in Army top Brass, using media as a tool.

Now Lt.Gen (retd) Tejinder Singh along with a reporter from a leading newspaper, tried to barge into the premises of TSD for reason best known to him. Still murky that who leaked them the location of the otherwise discreet office. Surprisingly the great reporter failed to mention that it was the same man who is embroiled in TATRA scam. Large headline mentions ‘Retired Lt Gen’. It doesn’t mentions anywhere the Tatra truck connection. Fine piece of Journalism, Eh?

And surprisingly Army was in no mood to press any legal action for this intrusion. Instead they went full throttle against Lt. Col. Vinay Birdie, who present at the office and was in charge as an acting CO of the Unit. A court of inquiry was set to investigate Birdie alleging him leaking a “sensitive document”. The document was a questionnaire prepared and sent by a TV Media to the Army’s public relations wing, seeking information about the TSD. Why would they not? TSD, a very secretive covert UNIT’s cover was blown out of proportions!

Intelligence gathering and covert ops are dirty business. You never know what is caught in elaborate net that you have laid to catch the fish. If you remember the Radia Tapes, Barkha Dutt and her lot was not the intended target. It’s just that they were caught revealing certain things with the intended Target- corporate lobbyist- Nira Radia. Hope you got my drift!

Now when the actual nature of the job of TSD and its capabilities were revealed. Obviously many higher ups got uneasy. पता नहीं क्या क्या सुन लिया होगा? J

“A guilty conscience needs no accuser”

Its no secret that India has always been plagued with a parallel economy as stated by the, then Home Secretary, N.N.Vohra in his report of 1993, His report clearly mentions the nexus among politicians, bureaucrats and criminals. Now to move large sums of money of such economy one cannot use usual banking system which has easy tracking mechanism.

Enter: The Hawala System! Now hawala system is extensively used by Pakistan ISI to move their cash to leave no or very little paper trail. BJP RS MP Subramanian Swamy has in his numerous public interactions stated that Pakistan ISI virtually controls this Hawala channels of laundering money. 9/11 Hijackers were quickly identified due to their money trail they left in the banking system. They even return the unused cash in tune of $26000, a day before the attack. Away from the usual banking system. Hawala is hard to track unless you do HUMINT tracking on known suspects.

Imagine somebody with guilty conscience suddenly knowing through leaked report that our Army has a covert Intel unit which is equipped with state of the art snooping device. People higher up is bound to get spooked. Such equipment did existed but was deployed in J&K with 15 corps. Ironically such the equipment’s were purchased but not by Army but by Defence Intelligence Agency, coincidently Lt Gen Tejinder Singh was director general of DIA previously.

More coincidence! When Tejinder Singh was jailed for 14 crore Tatra truck bribery case to then CoAS VK Singh, guess the lawyer who appeared for this bail? (Google it, I will leave it to you)

TSD was accused of snooping into Defence Ministers office and J&K CM Omar Abdullah phone. This cooked up story was used as an excuse to bring TSD down. A court of enquiry was set up under then DGMO, Lt Gen Bhatia to investigate TSD and its men. The equipment was destroyed and all the materials burned. The panel instead of investigating the structure of TSD and its workings went ahead and started investigating, in great details the various covert missions it had conducted. Mission which was supposed to be covert in nature against the enemy, meaning it comes with complete plausible deniability factor. Information of which was leaked to press (mention on Part 1).

Names of those covert officer were made public, cover were blown. These great men of valour were sent to non-descript postings. Imagine what a huge waste of talent and courage. Only deranged mind can do such injustice to men who had put their neck deep at harm’s way to serve The Nation.

These Officers mainly the C.O. of The TSD, had to fight a long legal battle, and in the end nothing concrete was found against any of the officers. GCM was dropped. Family subjected to great ordeal one cannot put this in words.

I am surprised why current Modi Govt which is touted to be Pro-People and Pro –Army took so long to clear the case, when ex-army guy Gen VK Singh and Col Rajyavardhan Rathore themselves are part of the government later. Maybe they had other priorities, but in my opinion as coming from a fauji family, Army men has long been ignored, though there is a visible change lately. Like equipment that our army guys are getting now is state of the art by any standard.

Final humiliation was yet to come, and the most absurd one! Finally, Indian Express came out with a big front page headline “The January night Raisina Hill was spooked: Two key Army units moved towards Delhi without notifying Govt”. Written by reporter Ritu Sarin under the then Editor Shekhar Gupta, first time in history Indian Army was accused of an attempt of coup d’état.

Majority of the junta laughed at the report, as in India, Army guys comes with more trust quotient than any other establishment. Not only they are at borders keeping us safe, but are at the forefront of any tragedy, man-made or natural, to help people in need. As Maj (retd.) Gaurav Arya always says, Indian army is not just a well-equipped powerful army but also a Moral Army.

This was the lowest that anybody can go in the field of journalism. Many of their own fraternity joked about it.

Pakistani Media had a field day on this. Name of our officer and their deeds were flashed all over Pakistan media. Imagine the security risk on our men. For what? Just to peddle your vested agenda.?

Now people like Shekhar Gupta, Karan Thapar, etc, of the left liberal cabal has always toed Pakistani Line, for whatever reason best known to them. Which is a shame, considering the fact that they have been living a lavish life, earning in India.

Now Shekhar Gupta was also named in a leaked Wikileaks report, implying the fact that he is the the point man in India for Startfor. Now what is Startfor? It’s a US based intelligence think tank, It publishes its security report which are subscribed for a fee by varied organization, from private companies, corporations to Govt agency.

According to WikiLeaks, Stratfor has history of recruiting a network of informants, many of which includes government employees, embassy staff and journalists around the world. These informant were paid via Swiss banks accounts and pre-paid credit cards.

Some of its work in India involved spying on behalf of Dow Chemicals on Bhopal Gas activists. And in nowhere Couptaji has ever mentioned he had work for Startfor, if not for email that leaked, we can assume him being a covert informant then. (we can write a whole article on his kind of journalism, maybe some day)

He was also one of the three journalists name in Augusta Westland Helicopter scam, by Christian Michael to influence public opinion. Some great public service for the ‘Fourth Pillar’ eh!?

A man with such credentials writes an article accusing Army for Coup. People will bound to be enraged. Hence Twitterati coined the name ‘Couptaji’ for him. There is a series of video by him on his new rag The Print YouTube channel advising what Pakistan should do. Funny eh? Man living in India advising Pakistan. देखो और खुब कोषों , Maybe someone’s curse gets better off him someday.

All in all they did great disservice to this Nation. TSD was killed for no reason. Its utility is still felt today when encounter like Handwara happens, where people misinformed our men. Such incident can be easily avoided when you have a forever working dedicated covert HUMINT Unit. We civvies doesn’t need to know the details about.
