Shekhar Gupta loses the Burqa of neutrality: Ends up peddling Congress agenda

0

Vikas Dubey was killed on 11th July, in an encounter with UP police. He was a much dreaded Mafia and brutal killer. There were 62 cases, including 5 murder cases against him. Just a few days back he killed 8 policemen in cold blood. Coincidentally he was a Brahmin. Brahmins have a sizable population in UP and even larger disproportionate influence in politics. And this, Liberal-Left Media thinks gives it an opening to take away some votes from BJP in 2022 assembly elections.

Since he has taken over in 2017, CM Yogi Adityanath has gone after Mafiosis and Criminals in a focussed manner. Resulting in more than 100 dreaded criminals deaths till now. On this background, the 11th July encounter looks suspect. But then this is not the first questionable encounter, nor it will be the last. One can argue it was KPS Gill first who used the encounters to deal with Khalistani Terrorists in late eighties and nineties. And with much success. Then in1990, and well into 2000 Mumbai police used encounters to clean Mumbai of Mafia Raj and Gang Wars. So there exists a precedent to suggest that, given the kind of Judicial mechanism we have, encounters is one of the effective ways to deal with organised crime.

Media, which hated Yogi Adityanath anyway, has erupted in a rage with Vikas Dubey encounter. And many pretentious and nasty responses followed. But one which really goes over the top comes from the lynchpin of  Left-Liberal Media, Shekhar Gupta. Who otherwise goes around with the garb of unbiased and impartial journalism. His ‘Cut the clutter’ released on 11th July, has so many inaccuracies and innuendos that it’s clear that he has lost it.

Gupta slips first Googly, within the first 20 Seconds. He says “Vikas Dubey, who was alleged to have killed 8 policemen, was killed in a quote-unquote ‘Encounter’.” Alleged? Yes, you read that correctly. Even after this being a well-known fact that Vikas Dubey and his gang brutally killed 8 policemen, which included a Superintendent of Police, the Senior Editor can’t utter the fact.

Once off to a brilliant start there is no looking back. For the next few minutes, it seems Gupta is sitting in a Mosque, enlisting Brahmins to be targeted. He reads out names of dozen Brahmin accomplices of Vikas Dubey. As if there were Brahmins and Brahmins only in his gang. And, the Yogi government is out to get all the Brahmins in UP. He ends first spell as eloquently as the start.Uses his Guru, Kejriwal’s line “UP me sab miley huey hai’ (Everybody’s involved).

The highlight of the video, to me, comes after a few minutes from this counting Brahmin gangsters bit. Gupta stays true to the Liberal tradition of using every opportunity to wash Islamic crimes. Coming round the wicket, quotes a scene from the movie, ‘Ishqiya’. Two small-time Muslim crooks, converse amongst themselves. Babban Hussain “Khalu, humaare me to sirf Shiya-Sunni hotey hai. Yanha to Yadav, Thakur, Pandey, Jaat sab ne apna apna fauj bana ke rakha hai. Apna pichwada uthao aur sarpat ho lo yanha se” (Uncle, we have only Shiya and Sunni. But here every Hindu caste has its own gang. Let us get out of here). In one fell swoop, Gupta paints every Hindu as a potential Gangster and every caste capable of producing criminals! But Muslims as faint-hearted, timid people, who are fearful of these Hindu Mafias. And who chose to run from Yogi Adityanath’s hometown, Gorakhpur.

Such is Shekhar Gupta’s hatred for Yogi, that after a little respite he trains his guns on the CM again. Per him, because Yogi is a Rajput by birth, Brahmins are feeling let down and hence they have their own gangs! Which helps them get them justice in case of crime against their own. Now, there can not be a bigger lie than this. Dubey was a gangster for the last 3 decades. He was wanted for BJP leader’s murder since 2001. UP’s abysmal law enforcement record is a very old thing. For many decades the Crime rate in UP has been high.  Contrary, it’s the Yogi Government who’s going after criminals. Some of them can be Brahmins. But to use that to paint Yogi as anti-Brahmin is a murder of Journalism.

Next prognosis by Gupta is equally crazy. Per him, in UP those castes who don’t have their own CM, become gangsters to get justice. But he is such a good journalist, that he himself destroys his own arguments in a jiffy. He gives an example of the notorious gangster/politician from Kunda – Raja Bhaiyya, a Thakur by caste. Now there have been many Thakur Chief Ministers, including VP Singh and Rajnath Singh. So why do Thakurs have their own Gang? Ditto applicable to Yadav, Jatts and all other castes. This is clearly a new low for journalism.

Most importantly, this is not only below-par stuff, but this is a plain distortion of facts. A testimony of which is the number of Brahmin ministers in UP cabinet. Around 20% of ministers are Brahmins! This is the fact which Gupta hides beautifully throughout. Now, why does Shekhar Gupta, who otherwise takes such pride in being a neutral journalist, make a video full of falsehoods? Not very difficult, you see. He is pushing Congress agenda for assembly elections in 2022. Even for 2017 elections, Congress had a Brahmin – Shiela Dixit, as CM face. She then had clearly spelt out her casteist agenda in an interview.

So, the doyen of Left-Liberal cabal is back to what he and his rent-a-cause ilk are best at! Peddling Leftist casteist agendas for favours. Before BJP advent, elections were won by diving Hindus along caste lines in UP. With Congress trying to make a comeback in UP, more and more attempts will be made to pitch castes against castes.

The plight of education system in India

To start with, he does not have an accent, may not sound “polished” to many and is not conversing in English but can make a meaningful argument here, how he critically analyzes the situation and can articulate it well with such brevity in his thoughts is what our education system needs to focus upon.

For years, our education system has emphasized on producing “wrote learners.” Our policy still sticks to the “one size fits all” approach, which has failed to cater to the individual needs of intellect and creativity that humans are born with. Eh! Sounds very humanistic, but wait, don’t you agree with me? Do we not celebrate the diversity we possess as a part of this larger humankind, and by diversity, I mean the unique qualities and skillset we have. However, to develop and nurture these skills, we need a conducive environment that will support our growth, which, unfortunately, our country’s system still lacks. Although, we have aced the concept of “mugging things up,” we have forgotten how we would practically apply the crammed up information to our real lives.

I have always been an Arts student, and according to the standards of our education system, I scored pretty decently. At an early age, I realized that my personality, aptitude, and interest lie in being with and around people, studying different societies, cultures, and history, languages, the functioning of the human mind, etc.  I chose to do things differently and wanted to see the world from a different lens, does it make me any less of a “smart person,” I don’t think so. But I feel the need to share that many of us (especially, folks from Arts fraternity) have always been subjected to the academic hierarchy existing in this country, and mind you, this hierarchy is based on merit.

A little confused, let me help you out here, topping the list is Science, meant only for prodigies, they are most respected in the Indian society because they always (and this is assumed) scored high and their intelligence is beyond comprehension, then comes Commerce-not prodigies but yes, may have scored well in exams, they are smart and know their figures well. Also, most of them end up running the finances of this country. At the bottom is Arts-last on the ladder and good for nothing, that’s it! It is assumed that they are least brainy, mostly described as “weak students,” those who are left without any other choice and have to be “dumped” in Arts because they need to get their primary education.

With the cut-throat competition that exists out there, it’s unfortunate that we discriminate our beautiful minds based on what we wish to study or how much we score. Be it Science, Commerce or Arts, whatever I choose to study should help me create standing for myself and make a decent living. My choice of subjects does not make my contribution to this society lesser than any of my counterparts. We have to understand that it is YOU who needs to tap into YOUR interests and understand where YOUR passion lies. Do not let yourself get trapped into “Log kya kahenge mentality” (what will people think)?

And to support this, we need an education system that does not define us based on our marks or subject choices.  We need a system that shapes our intellect, helps us form opinions, enhance our critical thinking, it should help us better identify our emotions, and make us emotionally intelligent people. Education should be a tool for us to broaden our horizons and develop our mental capacities, make us socially aware and responsible, help us be intellectually smart, and make us what we call “street smart.”

With that archaic format that we have been following so far, this idea may seem a bit “utopian,” but it is not impossible. I hope someday there can be a significant shift in the trajectory that will help us reap the benefits of an education that makes us self-actualized and fulfilled and guarantee us a happy and productive life.

I would like to believe that my education will not enslave me; instead, it would make me wise, empowered, and liberated!

Why should we demonise privatisation?

0

Nehruvian socialism is so ingrained in our brain that the word privatisation elicits choleric responses from large number of people in India. Something similar is happening right now. The decision by the current government to allow private players to run trains on select routes are being criticised. We can hear people quipping that for the BJP government ‘Vikas’ means privatisation.

If people such as these had their way we would have probably never seen Indian sky being opened for private airlines. We would probably still be flying with Indian Airlines and Air India and complaining about pathetic services and non-adherence to time like we do today for Air India.

It is amazing how we continue to demonise private industries and industrialists despite the fact that the Nehruvian socialism and nationalisation led us to the precarious economic situation in 1991.

In this article I will try to answer why it is wrong to question government’s decision to allow private players to run trains and give examples of inefficiencies from other industries owned and operated by the government. The headline of Asian Times on Indian government’s decision to allow private players to run trains read like this “India’s decrepit 167-year-old train network is about to embark on a new era of transportation under a $4 billion plan to privatize most of its passenger routes.” And this is exactly the problem. Despite being the second largest rail network in the world and running for so long Indian Railways still reeks of past. Apart from Train-18 we don’t have anything significant to showcase which can associate Indian Railways with modern times.

People who are criticising the move probably don’t understand how Indian railways is planning to proceed with this decision. When we go into the plan of the move we come to know that the private entity willing to run trains shall pay to Indian Railways:

> fixed haulage charges,

> energy charges as per actual consumption and,

>share in Gross Revenue determined through a transparent bidding process.

Moreover, the operation of the trains by the private entity shall conform to the key performance indicators like punctuality, reliability, upkeep of trains etc. The aim of the Indian Railways and in extension of the current government is clear; to introduce modern technology, provide enhanced safety, and cater world class travel experience to passengers.

We keep hearing about worsening operational cost of Indian Railways but India’s first private train Tejas posted a profit of 70 lakh in the first month itself. Allowing these private players to run trains will help the Indian Railways transform its image. And people who worry about the train fare going through the roof is unfounded. First, in market driven economy prices are fixed basis supply and demand and chances of fare going out of hand is minimal. Second, India is still a welfare state. Fare will be regulated by the government in public interest. Take for example when Airlines were given permission to re-start the operation post lockdown, government fixed the fares for different routes. So assuming private players will make the train travel very costly is grossly misplaced.

I believe government has no business to be in the business. It should focus on governance and enable people and entity to do business. Monopoly of an industry by the government comes with its own pitfalls.

Take for example defense industry. The project of Tejas fighter jet started in 80’s and we still don’t have a modern fighter jet of our own. The current crop of Tejas fighter jets are decades behind in technology. India still doesn’t have its own Jet engine, again the project for which started in 70’s. There is crying need to allow private players in the defense industry if at all India wants to be ‘aatma nirbhar’ in defense technology.

I still remember when BSNL was the only service provider for mobile phones, it was either very difficult to get the sim or you buy the sim through an agent costing as high as Rs 800. It was Reliance CDMA that put the phones in people’s hand, and cost came down further when other private players entered Indian market. Now India boasts of lowest cost per gb data. We are replete with several examples where private players made things better and cheaper. We Indians need to get out of this mentality of demonising privatisation and see the bright side it brings.

KP Community status needs a reset

0

Kashmiri Pandit’s today are struggling on various fronts. As always, they are trying to bring an acceptable level of normalcy in their community but with disparate voices. A strong community leadership historically has never emerged in their midst, even in adversity, which have visited them often.

Their political stand has always been vague and generally overpowered by individual ambitions of their so called leaders. The problem of “weak followership” adds immensely to their plight of looking rudderless as a community. Their inherent disdain for developing community traits and their belief that they can manage their life  individually creates a lot of social problems for them.

They have a unique experience of having managed fairly well in the past as a Hindu minority in a Muslim majority state (now UT). Migration was a popular trait to seek greener pastures to feed their career ambitions. The forced one in 1990 has destabilized them with no help from expected quarters. Their Brahminic legacy could also be adding to their woes on account of misplaced superiority complex.

Historical adversities too ,have contributed to their problems. While a great number of them seemingly have always overcome them as Individuals, there are certain groups who would avoid migrating for good reason. They  would eventually become a symbol of furthering their cause of retaining their identity in J&K. This aspect is also coming under cloud today. While one can easily pin this on separatist agendas and apathy by so called mainstream political parties in Kashmir, we have always avoided tougher choices as a community.

The most vulnerable groups today are the ones in “camps in Jammu and Delhi “and the one’s who have taken the “leap of faith to return to their motherland “.There plight is worsened both by their inability to strongly voice their concerns in the right political quarters and meddling by selfish so called KP leaders.

As explained above, the non existence of a sincere leadership and poor followership has stood out as the main issues. We were less or openly committed to any particular political party in the past as we were aware of their availability was not ensured when we needed them.

We were happily committed to Kashmiriyat as it provided a broad cover to our minority status.

1990 crisis has changed all that .When the crisis started abating , new generation started revisiting their traditional positions in the political space. Come 2014, while we still were nursing our wounds, new hopes started taking root amongst our community. Sadly, the opportunities were pilfered by our leaders individual approach to a community issue. No common stand as a community emerged in all these painful years.

The advent of BJP with a strong Hindutva traits came to stay. It perhaps cashed on our newly acquired bias against our Muslim brothers and sisters. They could not understand that this was not a change of heart but a desire for revenge and identity crisis on account of the adversity visiting us in 1990. Many in our scant leadership started finding solace in handing over the plight of our community to them for a fair resolution. This symbolized in change of our nomenclature, which changed from Kashmiri Pandit to Kashmiri Hindu. We were always Hindus by default. We adopted Kashmiri Pandit as our identity, a name given by Akbar as the legend goes. It fitted very well with our secular credentials and need to make our nestles in a safe social environment of Kashmiriyat back then.

It might surprise some people not familiar with J&K, and there are plenty in this country, that as far as our political credentials go, KP’s were part of struggle of Muslims when they were wanting to throw the yoke of Dogra rulership, some of them were also looking at seriously on the notion of Independent Kashmir in 1947 if not earlier. On the Social and Cultural front, they were driving the Kashmiri identity which was getting into shape after independence. Historically, as a major literate section of the society, they were part of the administration in good measure.

As the Muslims, who formed the majority, came on the scene with equally competing credentials, KP’s were deeply enmeshed in post Independence reconstruction of J&K. It was only after the 1990 (30 years) crisis that we have physically parted with the Muslims but retain all the social and Cultural links with Muslims (evolved for 43 years). We were keeping ourselves equidistant from mainstream political parties INC, NC, PDP, etc., in all these years till our exodus as a tradition.

Looking back now, we are a case of people, with no conviction on account of perpetual adversity of one kind or the other. Today the crisis persists especially for the two groups mentioned above. There has been no improvement on the relief initiated by the then government in power- INC (except forinflationary additions). The estimate of numbers falling in these two groups cannot exceed a lac. The tragic circumstance of our dispersion, driving us into political irrelevance adds to our discomfiture.

There is now green shoots emerging of a strong urge in the Community to return back and has started to review their position. These new activists are wary of the existing leadership. These activists are laden with  leadership qualities, with a sincere and pragmatic outlook. These are the ones who want to return to motherland on their terms by engaging in the life proper with all stakeholders of J&K. It surly has jolted the listless leaders of the past. They too have been forced to review their positions in this changed circumstance.

National and Local parties too are eyeing the vocal ones from our community. This is perhaps the opportunity, coming our way, a  last time to reset our options if we want to assert as a community. Missteps by BJP (covertly) by picking up some self professed leaders representing our community can also be seen. As a recent media debate has thrown up. Very intemperate and down right rude towards their own community was in display by a so-called intellectual from Panun Kashmir group calling two Jagati Camp activists as “gutter ke kide” etc., when questioned about, what BJP has done or is planning to set right the lives of these groups. BJP should be wary of such people who cannot be loyal and fair to their own community fellas, how can they represent BJP agenda or for that matter a national cause?

This is an appeal to other community members especially the people who think they have acquired the tag of “First floor Kashmiri Pandits” even after late 1980’s to review their position with regard to their fellow citizens from the community.

There cannot be anything as apt for this situation in her community as on date, what Lalded said in one of her VAAKHS…

Kyaah kara paantsan dahan ta kaahan,
Vakhshun yath leyji yim karith gay;
Saoriy samahan yeythi razi lamahan,
Ada kyaazi raavhe kaahan gaav

Snapping TikTok, signalling Twitter: Ban and beyond

0

The violent scuffle between Indian and Chinese armed forces in the Galwan valley has put bilateral relations on a different hostile path. Indian forces not only retaliated by killing at least 40 of PLA personal but also India hit back to china on the economic front, though in pieces. The most visible among economic reactions was a sudden ban on 59 Chinese Apps.

At first sight, it appears that the ban was a retaliatory measure and only related to the current heat prevailing at icy tops of Himalaya but if you go by government’s rationale behind ban it appears much more.

Government of India cited the issue of ‘safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace‘ as the reason behind the ban on these apps. The reason given by India opens a sky-full scope to deal similarly with other social media platforms which are going rogue.

Twitter is the most notorious irritant of them. Almost all patriotic twitter handles- big or small- are suffering from twitter’s anti-India and anti-Hindu behaviour over the years. Shadowbanning, non-appearance of tweets on follower’s timeline, lowering the retweets and likes count, blocking tweets and accounts, putting in the tweet restricted category, hiding images as sensitive etc. have been multiple biases of twitter against pro-India voices. All these incidents have been done in an arbitrary and bizarre manner.

If I name a few, handles like True Indology, Rangoli Chandel has been forcefully deleted without citing sound reasons. Even account of Indian Army’s Chinar Corps was once suspended. And, these are just a few examples of the large anti-India approach of Twitter India. Interestingly, video mocking Hindus, slogan against India, open abusive tweets on ancient Indian culture, ridiculing Hindu gods and goddess- all flourish at the same time. If you report, twitter would reply that they are against twitter policy but twitter would never take any action against them.

Recently, Twitter flagged the content of US President Donald Trump as abusive and even deleted one of his posted videos. This action created controversy worldwide on how far a digital platform can go. These platforms have the capacity to make an influence on the public at large cutting across national governments and geographical boundaries. They have been used politically many times. The USA can have its own solutions because servers, administrative set-up and global head office of twitter lies in their home territory. They fall under the jurisdiction of laws and courts of the USA. Same is not true for India.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey even once conceded that most of the Silicon Valley start-ups are left-leaning.

Wikipedia is again a major anti-India platform. Their information is highly communist and Islamist leaning. A plethora of misinformation has been put against India. Information about India’s history, wars India fought, its approach towards foreign policy, internal issues of India, faith, ethnicity, name of places… and what not!- all have been highly distorted. This is serious as Wikipedia is the first hand source of information for many internet users across the globe. Most of them do not re-check the available information and blindly believe in it. Defacing information pages of pro-India setups, people and organization appear to be a regular phenomenon on Wikipedia. Opindia-the platform at which I am writing this piece- has been at the receiving end of venomous conducts of Wikipedia. Manipulation of Indian map and showing Indian Territory as foreign land has also been a trademark element of the anti-India tirade of Wikipedia.

Facebook, though I know very little, has been accused time and again by nationalist voices for its anti-India policy sugar-coated with some fancy morals. Every now and then, Nationalist pages have been deleted by Facebook. In recent anti-Hindu Delhi riots, Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg falsely accused BJP’s popular leader and former MLA of Delhi assembly Mr Kapil Mishra as a hatemonger.

Deletion of an anti-TikTok roast video of famous YouTube video blogger and gamer CarryMinati showed YouTube also falls in this league. Information and research videos of sane voices like Neeraj Atri, Satya Sanatan, Upword and OpIndia and many more have been demonetized because they found their research-based videos against the arbitrary policies of YouTube.

These platforms influence Indian mindset, use digital policing, make their own rules and create hegemony over the user’s data.  And all these so-called rules and policy are nowhere aligned to Indian legal and constitutional set-up. They flaunt each and every norms and snatch freedom of expression bestowed upon Indian citizen by the constitution of India under Article 19. Apparently, they try to become a sovereign entity parallel to the Indian State. They are creating their own empire within India, against India.

When Japan hosted the G-20 summit in 2019, Shinzo Abe and Donald Trump, both good friends of our PM Narendra Modi, have proposed ‘Osaka Declaration’. This was an overreaching framework promoting cross-border free-flow of data. Modi, as always, stood rock solid and resolutely refused to sign the document defying every pressure created by Japan, Europe and the USA. India clearly stated that our domestic industry has yet to evolve to match the competence of global players and allowing free-flow of data would let them an advantage of India’s digital wealth.

Safety of our citizen’s Data is also the government’s top priority when the game is being played in the global digital arena. Data Localization-physical storage of data within the territory of India- is being pushed by the government as we are one of the largest generators of internet data. To start the process, RBI had issued guidelines in 2018 to digital payment operators like PayTM to compulsorily store user’s data in India.

Now, the Indian Government for the first time invoked the principle of digital sovereignty against a foreign-based digital service provider. By providing explicit reasons on TikTok ban, the signal transmitted by the government seems clear- fall in line and follow the Indian law. Eardrums of Twitter, Facebook and Wikipedia must have felt the sensation of govt’s slap on the cheeks of TikTok-plus-58.

‘Data is the new oil’, ‘Data is the new form of wealth’, ‘who will control the data, will control the world’- all these phrases have been heard many times by all of us. Not to forget Data will also be the most potent weapon to destabilize a hostile country. In this sense, Data can be called ‘new nuclear weapon’.

Kicking Chinese Apps out on the data sovereignty ground is a firm step towards preparing ourselves against the efforts of modern digital colonization. And, if we connect the next dot of Osaka Declaration denial, we can say New India also has new aggression when it comes to protecting its sovereignty- be it territorial or digital.

Open letter to liberals

0

Dear Liberals,

I have observed that many of you while writing about black lives matter have juxtaposed that Muslim lives too matter. Let me start with the preamble that all lives matter. However comparing Muslim lives in India to black lives is like comparing apples and oranges.

Since most of you are from prestigious schools you would have read Uncle Tom’s cabin. The immigrant whites in United States brought the slaves in inhuman condition in ships from Africa. They were made to work in inhuman conditions in the cotton farms. Let us get historical facts correct. Muslims came to India as conquerors and invaders. They destroyed Hindu temples and architecture and there were mass conversions. They were the ruling classes for centuries till the British arrived. British were masters of divide and rule policy and governed us till independence.

Unfortunately at the time of independence the country was partitioned on grounds of religion. In spite of the partition being a bloody one our leaders ensured that India is a secular country and the constitution guarantees equality to all irrespective of religion or caste. While even in early sixties segregation was being practiced in southern states of USA. Hence comparing erstwhile ruling class with those who were slaves is blatant disinformation.

I regret to point out that I find it difficult to have a civilised discussion with you my friends. If my opinion differs from you I am branded as a bhakt which has become a derogatory word in your vocabulary.

I am appalled by the double standards of the liberals. Many think that statues of Columbus and even Winston Churchill should be brought down; but in Karnataka Tipu Jayanti should be celebrated. It is a fact that Tipu Sultan went on a rampage against the Coorgis & Melkote Iyengars. Liberals are up in arms against the renaming of some roads. I agree that renaming of roads does not serve any purpose.  However not to accept that some of the rulers were cruel and vicious is an ostrich attitude.

Even after independence our history books glorify only the Mughal Empire & architecture. Most students are unaware about the Hoysala and Chola architecture. In India major temples are managed by Government trusts. Have any mosques been taken over by the Government?

I think the problem with liberals is that they think Muslims were fine till Congress/UPA governed the country and it has been downhill for the community since the present government took charge. There is no denying that there are some hot heads promoting aggressive Hindutva agenda. Hot heads are there in every community. When I ask for evidence about ill treatment of Muslims in India the discussion goes back to Gujarat riots. It was not the first riot in India, but since you hate one man the narrative does not change. Liberals have not even shed crocodile tears for the Kashmir Pandits who became refugees in their own country.

What is worrisome for the liberals is not that Muslims are in danger; but they have lost their power and sense of entitlement in the present scenario. For decades they had decided what lesser mortals should read and think. Most of us grew up unaware of our Hindu heritage as the history taught in schools was wishy washy about the Hindu civilisation.

Hindus today are more proud of their old civilisation and have found a voice without being apologetic to talk about it. That does not mean that the majority has started ill -treating the minority; barring a few hot heads. I sincerely hope this disinformation campaign is stopped and we ordinary Indians live in peace.

Yours sincerely,
Ordinary Indian

Sky is the limit for Indian Air Force

After a two-month long standoff, Chinese PLA has retreated but has awakened India and Indian policy makers about who is going to be a real threat for them in near future. As India is planning a big leap on modernization of her defense forces, a subsequent debate has started as why India is still lagging behind in her aerial capabilities? From political unwillingness to bureaucratic anomalies, a series of reasons are being cited. Previous governments right from the era of Indira Gandhi are being blamed for delays and unwillingness to procure critical aerial machines.

Old school boys in IAF

Around 40% of IAF’s fighters are way too old to handle modern warfare. We are the only nation using Jaguar bombers, though an upgraded version, while it has been retired by France & UK in 2005 & 2007 respectively. Oman was the last to retire them from service in 2014. There also happens to be an old homie “MIG 21”, which is often termed as “flying coffin” due to a huge number of crashes in last two decades. Currently IAF is using an upgraded version called “MIG 21 Bison”, whose retirement has been postponed various times between 1995 to 2019. Now it has been further postponed to retire in 2025.

A Mig 21 Bison

On par with enemy?

Struggling with older machines has become a compulsion for IAF since it needs at least 42 squadrons to handle a “Two-front war” but presently it maintains only 33 Squadrons. If India retires Mig 21 Bison, then it will reduce to 26 Squadrons, whereas our western neighbor has 24 Squadrons with much advance technologies like “F-16” and “JF-17 Thunder”. A bigger threat comes from eastern front. China’s PLAF (Peoples Liberation Air Force) is far superior than IAF in terms of squadrons. Presently it has 40 squadrons and they’re aiming to raise it to 50 squadrons of fourth generation aircrafts by 2025.

China’s Chengdu – J20 in action

Path of Modernization

Modern warfare requires sharpening the edge of the spear rather than throwing a heavy spear with rusty edge. Militaries around the globe are making a cut in their manpower and investing in advance technologies. With the limited budget in hand, India has decided to reduce her manpower and purchase critical “war machines” from that money but the road to modernization doesn’t seem soft. Presently a huge chunk of the defense budget (Around 52%) goes in salaries and pensions, with very little amount left to be spent on modernization. While CDS Bipin Rawat had earlier indicated to reduce army by 1.5 lakh soldiers, the defense ministry is yet to propose a blueprint of the same. At a moment when Chinese PLA had started its modernization drive in 2015 and reduced its strength almost by half and doubling the strength of its air force by 2020, we need to look back at our modernization plans and start it on a faster pace.

Plans & hindrances ahead

While Modi government looks serious for modernization of our forces after the Galwan episode, the question remains the same as “How efficiently” and “How effectively”. The government is planning to spend 130 Billion USD on defense modernization in next 6-7 years. Indian Navy has announced to procure a number of patrol vessels, submarines, destroyers etc. but the modernization plan of Indian Air force is not finalized yet. Looking at the present plans of IAF, it has purchased high-end machines like Rafale, AH-64 Apache, Chinook etc. which can be considered first step on the path of modernization. Further it has shown interest in USA’s “Lockheed Martin F-35” which is presently the only 5th generation stealth fighter in the world, but it’s heavy price & maintenance cost remains a critical issue. Our own HAL is developing a prototype of AMCA (Advance Multirole Combat Aircraft) and is expected to be developed by 2029. Moreover, with the decision of Modi government to let the private players enter in defense manufacturing will definitely bear fruits but not anytime soon. Thus, looking at the present scenario, IAF has no option but to purchase machines from foreign arm suppliers at a higher cost, which will leave a significant dent on domestic aircraft development programs due to budgetary constraints.

Way forward

Again, we must leave the tendency to delay the critical purchases for our armed forces via bureaucratic tantrums. We must develop a mechanism which is in sync with the arising needs of armed forces and keeps the government well informed about it and certainly help in fast track procurement. Interestingly, Indigenous technologies like LCA Tejas have been a success, keeping in mind the program cost which is quite low comparing to foreign manufacturers. The only thing that pulls our legs back is the time taken to complete the program. It was started in 1980’s and became a reality only in 2015. In technology, time is the key. If we can’t produce advance technologies at a given pace, then it will be outdated and won’t be of any use. Thus, producing indigenous technologies shall be our priority. Funds and clearances should be available on time, then only we’ll be able to compete with global players at a low cost. It’s high time that we should promote and focus on developing high-end defense technologies that will be fruitful in coming 20 years. It will definitely give us “Hawk wings” in the sky.

Young generation have to come in joining hands with these craftmens to preserve our culture

India is known for its rich culture because of its many art forms. The handicraft industry has a history of several centuries. The artisans of India were known worldwide for their skill and craftsmanship. This sector constitutes a major part of the rich cultural heritage of the country. It showcases the traditional skill of artisans in various crafts such as wooden products, metal ware, textile weaving & printing, marble & stone crafts, leather works, jewellery etc… This skill is handed down from generation to generation in the form of family tradition. True to its name, the “Handicraft” (crafts made by hands) industry uses manual methods instead of advanced technology for making various items. Eventhough the Indian Government, since independence has implemented various plans and policies to secure this sector, the industrialization and exploiters have destabilized the artisans. Technological advancement is also a major reason behind the reduction of handcrafted products into machine made products, which cost a little less as compared. This resulted in the decline of  Indian handicrafts industry

The average earning of a craftsmen when compared to that of other fields is very low. Hence, the younger generation is moving to other fields with only the elder craftsmen being left behind. The country needs younger generation of craftsmen to carry on the tradition of handicrafts, and this is only possible by ensuring the assistance of craftsmen to improve their techniques, availability of quality raw materials, direct marketing channels, credit and better wages and providing them with socio-economic benefits.

Young generation have new ideas which will definetly help in the expansion of handicraft industry. They are technically good and knew the usage of other promoting platforms. They are the future of our nation since they have to preserve our culture. Digital tools allow the local artisans to connect with the global audience and to create awareness about their businesses and bring lost recognition to the handicraft industry. The intiative called Uthhan is working for the betterment of the handicraft industry. This is an online platform where artisan can sell their products at their prices. In uthhan younger generation has the opportunity to work as a volunteer for the betterment of these artisans. Volunteers will be provided by certificates and other beneficial offers which will enhance their skills. Uthhan is currently feeding more than 10000 artisan families with almost 500+ volunteers helping the cause..

Now, a sitting MLA loses life: Does the Centre owe any duty to common men of West Bengal?

Following the endless stream of political violence, the death (suspected murder) of Debendranath Ray, a sitting BJP member of Bengal legislature is finally threatening to burst the dam of patience of people of the state.

Only a fair investigation will unearth the truth about the cause of the MLA’s death. However, the opposition parties and also large chunk of the population have doubts that the state investigation agencies would be able to do that for more than one reason.

According to many political observers the tragic incident sends thunder signal as they foresee violence set to accelerate in days to come if it is viewed in the overall context of the political strategy of Trinamool Congress -the ruling party in the state.

To discerning political observers, it is clear that the party at the helm in West Bengal has been facing toughest challenges since it came to power in 2011 under the combined onslaught of Covid-19 and Amphan. The capacity to face the dual challenge has become emaciated due to corruption in several layers of the party. Challenges are so daunting that the party seems to have gone into a resignation mode. On more than one occasion the desperation showed up in the soundbites given by the party supremo.

Quite contrary to what many think it is plausible that the party may welcome president rule in the state hoping that will give an immediate relief from facing the present challenges, simultaneously lending it a martyr image which it can encash in 2021 poll. If that is indeed the strategy, it is likely that it will itch for a showdown with the centre. In consequence political violence may accelerate going forward, rather than ebbing.

Now if one looks at BJP’s West Bengal strategy, it seems to be following a policy of endless patience, hoping that the voters will be so disgusted with the TMC by 2021 election time that they would direly seek a change of regime and it will be the natural beneficiary. Thus, it had for a long-time, addressed issues of political violence through ‘Kadi Ninda’. Now it seems to be resorting to ‘We condemn’ kind of statements. The words are only getting harsher!

If that is indeed the BJP’s strategy there is serious moral objection to it. Being the party ruling at the centre, it owes duty to the people of the state to protect them if the law and order collapses. There can be no virtue in not imposing Art 356 under any circumstances. It is not without any rhyme or reason that the framers of the Constitution had incorporated it.

It will be a moral as well as ethical guilt on the part of the Centre not to come forward and protect the common people of West Bengal at the time of grave crisis as seems to be the case presently. They cannot simply sit idle calculating their own political gains and losses.

The BJP must also factor in the possibility that the scale of violence is more likely to go up as the state approaches 2021 poll. Eventually it may not be able to avoid intervention. But if that happens at the last hour, the loss in human lives will be greater. Even electorally, Trinamool can leverage the martyrdom sentiment more effectively. Nor would the governor get enough time to set things in order to be able to create a favorable image in favour of the ruling party at the centre.

Interestingly, the BJP at the state level does not seem to be adequately aware of the challenges it will face if it is voted to power. West Bengal is the third most populated state with multi-faceted problems including infiltration from Bangladesh, presence of terror modules, making of country bombs and fire arms across vast rural belts, syndicate raj, cut money and corruption, lack of industries and employment, declining standard of education, dwindling health infrastructure, to mention some.

BJP must realize that it has so far benefitted electorally due to anti-incumbency factor. It has not been able to present before the people of the state any convincing road map of what it would be able to accomplish if voted to power. Though Modi government at the centre has a wide range of achievements to its credit, the people of the state will like to be assured of what his party will be able to do as ruling dispensation at the state level.

If the centre takes over the reins without procrastination, it can use both Covid-19 and Amphan rehabilitation as opportunities to give people a demonstration of good governance. That will convince people of the state about the qualitative difference between the governance by the two regimes. A drastic improvement in law and order situation can be another key factor in building a favorable public perception in a remarkably short time. There is abundant opportunity to do a host of good work by making right use of the bureaucracy, which seems to have been kept under shackles. It goes without saying that the BJP as a party will be the beneficiary of any positive public perception that may arise under president’s rule.

This is however not to say that imposition of president rule will not face opposition. It is bound to arise. The present ruling party will cry hoarse with the hope that the fiercer is its protest, the greater will be electoral benefits. Even opposition parties like Congress and the left may oppose president rule by launching tirade against both TMC and BJP. However, if management of Covid 19 and AMPHAN rehabilitation begin to improve rapidly, these protests may ebb quickly, fearing that common men may not approve such action.

Finally, it remains to be seen how BJP looks at the issues relating to its moral duty and electoral prospects. History has thrown at the party the challenge of making a right decision at a very important juncture of time. It needs to accept it with courage, and confidence.
