The reality of Bihar Election Results analysis

0

While I was watching the expert analysis of Bihar Elections Results on television an old memory came to my mind.

When I was a kid, every Raksha Bandhan, we used to go to our cousins’ place. Once Rakhi and other rituals were done, all the kids in the house would go to the roof and fly kites. This particular episode occurred when I was nine, my younger brother was seven and the cousin brother was six, the cousin sisters were a little too young that time. After a few hours of kite flying, all three of us were leaning on the railing, all tired and just looking around. A few hundred meters on a different roof we noticed a man and a woman standing. The man was lean, and the lady was a little heavy, she looked big and strong and especially when compared to the man. The lady walked towards the door and went inside. The man followed her, although he was walking fine, but all of a sudden started limping. He limped for a while and sat down. And then it started-

My brother said, it looks like Aunty beat the shit out of Uncle and that’s why he is unable to walk. The youngest one added to the story, yes that’s quite possible, Aunty is quite strong. If they both fight, Aunty would definitely win, no doubt about that. Poor Uncle! I added, what can he do, Aunty eats all his food, that’s why he is so weak and when he complains, he receives an flying bowl on his head. Then we added some more spicy facts to the story, and continued for some time. The interesting point is that we did not know any thing about that man or the woman, we just saw them an hour ago, they might not even be a couple. It was more likely that the man just stepped on a pebble and limped for a few steps or twisted his ankle. But that’s just one line, ten seconds, that’s not an interesting story at all. Our interpretation of the incident was entertaining, at least for us, six – seven year old kids tired after flying kites, killing some free time. We were having fun, just laughing at the stories we were inventing at the moment and making the best of the time we had got together.

That’s exactly how the expert analysis of Bihar elections on mainstream news channels looked like on the tenth of November.

The Krishna Avtar Tejashwi Yadav has stepped out of his father’s shadows and has carved a niche for himself. He started his election at a very good note, he did not talk about caste or religion politics, breaking the caste barrier. He tried to change the election agendas to unemployment and issues that matter. After BJP witnessed a setback in the Phase I of the election, they pulled up their socks. Modi and his other star campaigners started bringing polarizing issues like NPR and NRC in the campaign. Further, Modi tried his best to remind people of the “Jungle Raj” after the phase I set back. If it were not for Indian National Congress’ poor strike rate Grand Alliance would have registered a clear majority. In addition to this, BJP used LJP to keep an upper hand in the alliance by cutting JD(U)’s seats. Also, Owaisi’s AIMIM played a role of vote-cutter (vote-katua) for the grand alliance. However, at the same time, the left has reincarnated in this election.

It sure is an interesting narration. The analysis ran through out the day and kept its audience glued to the news channels. But is any of it true? It sure is possible, it looks like it from the numbers, but is the interpretation presented to the viewers actually the reason behind what happened? Or is it just a whimsical imagination like a five or a nine year old kid, inventing a story behind the limping man?

Let me provide you with some aspects of the election which might explain the reason behind what happened and why. But they won’t be as interesting and captivating as the version you saw on tv channels.

Lets start with the difference in the different phases of the election. The following figures show the number of seats won by the different alliances in different phases.

Its quite clear that NDA did approximately the same in Phase 2 & 3 but not in Phase 1. Why? What is one major difference between phase one and the rest of the phases that mainstream media did not even care to mention. In the figure below, blue region is phase 1, yellow is phase 2 and pink is phase 3.

As of February 2019, 16 districts (out of Bihar’s total 38 districts) were/are affected by Naxal extremists. Eleven out of the total sixteen Naxal hit districts form the part of the blue region i.e. phase I of the election; four districts form the part of the yellow region i.e. phase II and one in the pink i.e. phase III. Even in this election, explosives were found in some of these districts like Gaya and Aurangabad. Naxalite insurgency is the reason for the difference between the phase 1 and the other two phases. Now look at the following figures keeping Naxalism in mind:

Phase one had 11 naxal hit districts, second had 4 and third had only one and it is proportional to the extreme left wing parties in the above figure CPI(ML). People affiliated to Communist Party of India have undergone so many separations and mergers that it is very difficult that who is running what agenda. Left did not rise in Bihar, Nitish Kumar’s government failed in controlling Naxalism and that’s why they lost the Phase I. The saddest thing is Grand Alliance giving left parties space in their alliance. This indicate that we are heading towards a disaster sometime in the near future and we are clueless about it. It is true that left contested officially only on 30 or less seats, but no one knows how many seats did RJD win with the left support.

I was extremely surprised when the news channels did not mention it for a noticeable time in their day long analysis. It looks like there are many forces supporting the Naxalites in India. #UrbanNaxal is real! Forget acknowledging Urban Naxals, media is now not ready to acknowledge even the idea of Naxalites.

Do you need to evoke the feelings of a Jungle Raj, when you are already living in a Jungle? Are Naxal hit areas any less then a jungle raj?

As a matter of fact, election campaigns are region specific, issues specific, unfortunately caste/religion specific but not phase specific. If in case the pink region had gone for election in the beginning and the blue region at last, Modi and his star campaigners would have brought up the Jungle Raj and NRC/370 in the beginning right away. And then once they would have got 22 seats in the last phase, the so called experts would have said “People rejected BJPs polarizing politics of NRC and accepted Tejashwi’s new approach”.

It was a time for a debate on this issue. Wasn’t it? Instead, the point of discussion were insane; Nitish Kumar is old, he is tired, Tejashwi is young, blah blah and blah blah, but not a single meaningful argument.

Tejashwi Yadav has left Lalu’s legacy behind and is coming out as a formidable leader even for the national politics. What has he done to corroborate this statement? Has he done anything, I literally mean anything, in politics or otherwise, even in his personal life that proves the above statement made by some analysts sitting in the studios?

He can’t leave Lalu’s legacy behind because he is the legacy. His entire life is Lalu’s legacy. After playing two one-day and four twenty twenty games with the highest score of 19 in his first class cricket career, he ended up becoming a part of Delhi Daredevils for four seasons. He earned Rs 30-40 Lakhs every year in the first four season of IPL without playing a single delivery; not because he is Tejashwi but only because is Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Tejashwi. I feel so very sorry for that one person who would have made it to the sixteen if it were not for Tejashvi. What has he done in his life on his own? He couldn’t even finish high school.

He is a chief minister candidate only because he is Lalu’s Tejashwi and not because he is an individual with an individual identity. He does not need to explicitly mention Muslim-Yadav alliance in his campaign. His father built the entire infrastructure on that ground. Moreover, even when we go with the numbers, he is failing in the state, let alone becoming a national politician. In 2015, RJD contested on 101 seats and won 80 seats i.e. a strike rate reaching almost 80% (79.2% to be precise). However, even after NDA’s internal differences where LJP tried its level best to crush JD(U) and succeeded to a great extent, Tejashwi’s RJD performed worse than its 2015 performance. RJD contested on 140 seats and won only 75 i.e. a strike rate of only 53.5%. It is just an assumption that Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) was pulled down by Indian National Congress, it is equally likely possible that if RJD would have contested on those 70 seats, it would have won exactly the same number of seats.

All this new Tejashwi Yadav is a whimsical imagination of a few people sitting in a news studio exactly like five six years old kids imagining an aunty beating a shit out of an uncle. For that matter, not only Tejashwi but all other political sons like Akhilesh Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray, Rahul Gandhi so on and so forth are incompetent and are destined to be doomed(politically). They are the reason why Amit Shah can confidently claim that BJP will remain in power at least till 2050. They have egos of their own but no identity of their own.

Having said all this, I was still a little surprised with the results. I was expecting BJP to get around 100 seats (BJP alone, not NDA) even when BJP contested only on 110 seats. If you liked this article, please stay tuned for the next one where I share some more number and graphs indicating why the results are the way we saw them, why I thought BJP would win 100 seats and why it didn’t and more importantly how media and some politicians are abusing the democratic freedom.

Thank you all for reading it. Please do share the article if you liked it.

What is the base of my thought process?politics

0

We all read articles. They are motivated towards a root cause. We can not identify that root cause as a normal reader. Even I have a cause and I will never mention it here. You are going to read this essay and your thought process will include my opinions in some corner of your brain. But it is possible that you keep yourself objective when you have to make a choice and you don’t let the things feed inside you interfere with your choice. But remember, your choice, what ever be, will also have some root cause deep inside. That root cause is same for everyone. Expressions of that root cause take different shapes and it is the expression which gets affected by what is fed inside you and you cant do anything with that until and unless you renounce your power of making choices.

The one who writes an article should question himself, what is basis of his assumptions? Books? peopl?  or some far fetched idea which he wants to hide behind the network of complex and useless words? Or he is confused? Or he just wants to remain in his comfort zone which he achieved by devoting his time in earning some degree and learning some languages? And when that comfort zone gets challenged, he presumes many facts and presents his whole analysis of the situation on the basis of those presumptions. he never tries to explain how those presumptions are true. He just presumes that reader is either stupid or reader also presumes same thing or reader cant see the fine and subtle  presumptions being made and conclusion been drawn on them. these writers are well versed in their subjects which have been developed over time by theoretical understanding of people. the practical and ground work been done is not fully incorporated objectively in order to either create a new theory itself or fit into the existing ones. If the practicality had some role in knowledge gaining and dissemination , we would never have seen such violence.

The violence happens. Don’t count heads. You hurt 1000 ants but killed 1 lion. both are equal in sense that both are lives. But the purpose of earth and universe at large is far beyond this petty understanding. Until we teach everyone about that, its futile to expect anything positive from current dispensation of universities which are filled up with cocky professors and revolutionary individuals who stick to one ideology and will go to any extent to satisfy their ego. They are definitely not gurus or shishya. They are fringe elements of society who are equally if not more responsible for violence all around the world. Second batch responsible for these are the ‘self’ declared leaders sent by god.

Om shanti Om.

Titumir, the unmerited hero of West Bengal

Syed Mir Nisar, better known as Titumir, from present day North 24 Parghana district of West Bengal near Kolkata, was a radical Wahhabi Jihadi who desecrated temples, killed Brahmin priests and attacked Hindus in that area of Bengal during 1831. He, along with his followers, also organized Muslim peasants against Hindu landlords, and this brought him in direct confrontation with the British East India Company, who proved to be his nemesis. He was killed by the Company’s army on 19 November 1831 in a battle.

But strangely in West Bengal, under both Communist and TMC rule, Titumir has been promoted as the first freedom fighter of India against British. Titumir never fought against British and Hindu landlords for independence of India. He rather launched Jihad against infidels to establish Islamic hegemony in that part of the then Bengal.

A section of self-loathing Hindu Bengali left leaning secular intellectuals is all praiseful about Titumir for his fight against Hindu landlords to alleviate the suffering of poor Muslim peasants. What these intellectuals selectively forget is that, Bengal was under Muslim rule from AD1204 to AD 1757 before British East India Company defeated the last Nawab of Bengal in Plassey on 23 June 1757.

This section of Bengali Hindu intellectuals also gives an impression that Hindu landlords were subjugating poor Muslim peasants for centuries. But Landlords of Bengal were created after “Permanent Settlement” during 1793 by British East India Company. So it was a story of about 30 years. Besides, there were poor Hindu peasants too. These intellectuals fail to explain as to why there were poor Muslim peasants in Bengal after its Muslim rule during previous 550 years.

The actual story of Titumir has no connection with Freedom Fighting or Peasant Revolt in Bengal. His current left leaning secular narrative is falsification and distortion of history. It is also a dishonor for a radical Wahhabi Jihadi of early nineteenth century Bengal to be labeled as freedom fighter of India.

Titumir and his followers fought and died for Islam. They fought and died for recapturing of political power by Muslims in Bengal. Titumir hated both Hindus and British equally. That is why Titumir is a hero in Bangladesh. But his hero worship in West Bengal is not understood.

Deriving virtue out of vice has been the specialty of left leaning secular Hindu Bengali intellectuals. State government funded libraries in West Bengal are given financial aid of Rs 1000 each year to celebrate the birthday of Titumir on 27 January.

What a joke!

How Obama has Trumped our Bihar Poll Pundits

So Bihar elections are now done and dusted. Nitish Kumar is set to assume office for possibly the nth time, after being in office for 15 continuous years. And courtesy. Someone called Mr. Narendra Damordas Modi, who happens to be Prime Minister of India. To the utter dismay and disillusionment of the now wobbly ‘liberals’ and the failing/flailing Lutyens’ media, the Exit Poll predictions have turned a dud as a wet Diwali cracker. It was amusing and enjoyable to watch some anchors ‘dancing’ while hosting the Exit poll projections and then bravely eating crow when the results were beamed across the nation.

These pollsters were rudely shaken and shown their place in the US 2016 elections. They were contrite and promised to return with a ‘better model which would stand the test of the hurly burly of heated hustings’ as the big daddy of them all, Nate Silver promised. The only thing they learned during US 2020 POTUS elections was to be cautious, careful, safe by caveating every projection they made. The overwhelming consensus was that Joe Biden and his Democratic party would blow out Donald J Trump and his Republicans.

Alas, while Biden squeaked through (which too peevishly Trump is not willing to concede) the Republicans held more than the projections in the Senate and House of Representatives’ elections. Biden is slated to be buffeted by lack of mobility in the US Congress, not a healthy prospect, however ‘willing and co operative and unifying’ Joe may offer to be, in a polarized/divided US of A.

It is now not a ‘more perfect union’ as the Founders envisaged in 1776/1789 in the Constitutional Congress. But, seemingly slipping back to becoming a Confederation it was, before it was unified as United States of America. As someone beautifully put it, USA now is “United……States of America” and not ‘ United States……of America”. Brilliant.

What of their pollsters? They took a hiding this time too. But they escaped a repeat by the skin of their teeth. Back home, our Exit Poll Pundits were not so lucky. The Bihar junta comprising the ‘silent voters’ as they called them or ‘Nari Shakthi’ as Modi euphemized, made mincemeat of the exit poll predictions. The pundits have not egg on their faces but omelettes and more.

The ‘liberals’ are more disturbed and disappointed than the opposition. They grudgingly admit that Rahul Gandhi and the Congress may have again played spoilsport pulling down the Maha Gat Bandhan (MGB) from trumping the Modi juggernaut. Excuse me, from distant US of A, an insightful visionary called Barack Obama who used to be POTUS during 2008-2016, has the answer that the ‘liberals’ may do well to accept. The answer is wrapped in rather convoluted language for Obama appears to have been sensitive to the Gandhi family and its hordes of minions. “Rahul Gandhi has ‘a nervous, unformed quality about him, as if he were a student who’d done the coursework and was eager to impress the teacher but deep down lacked either the aptitude or the passion to master the subject”, ‘Paraphrasing it- Obama was suggesting that Rahul Gandhi was ‘inept and ineffective’.

Come on, be a sport. Did we need Obama to tell us this. We The People in India always knew it. Ask the victors- NDA or BJP- in 2014 and 2019 general elections and in the many State elections. BJP had safe harbour in the leadership qualities of Rahul Gandhi. Be he the President or Vice President or just a Gandhi scion to whom his lackeys kowtowed, just his appearances to solicit votes and berate Narendra Modi from public platforms, enthused the ‘silent voters’ to respond in the polling booths. BJP’s strength lies in Rahul Gandhi continuing at the helm of Congress.

M/s. Jairam Ramesh and P Chidambaram have added to Tariq Anwar’s comment, “Yes, we admit, Congress pulled down the MGB”, by promising to ‘deliberate in the Congress Working Committee on their repeated failures and the recent one in Bihar and give out a detailed statement’”.

Sorry CWC. One politician pundit, from the inside, who once was the leading light as leader of the free world, has already told us why Rahul Gandhi was yet again unsuccessful. He is ‘inept and ineffective’. He simply lived up to his skillset and reputation. CWC has been spared time and effort in engaging in any empty and/or futile deliberations. Look for better work, if CWC has any, beyond being Yes Men to the Gandhi family. That would suit BJP like no other.

Amit Shah came and conquered. J P Nadda has come and did the same. Tomorrow, it could be Kuppusamy or Ramasamy or any other Tom, Dick or Harry, so long as CWC endorses and pledges the Congress party to the Gandhi family and Rahul Gandhi leads the political charge as their star campaigner.

While Barack Obama had two words to describe Rahul- as paraphrased by me, I admit, from the few sentences in his, to be released memoir, My Promised Land- I have just one word to describe why I feel Narendra Modi keeps being the darling of the voters. SINCERE.

Yes, Modi is a politician. Clever, manipulative, scheming to bring down his opponents. Be it as Chief Minister of Gujarat or as Prime Minister of India, he has been sincere in his efforts. He may not have delivered. He may have promised the moon and not reached even the tree top on occasions. He may have tripped as on DeMon.

Yet, he was trying it with sincerity. He sincerely felt that it may expose the parallel economy and suck up the black currency. He did not realise that We The People were cleverer, ingenious and cunning in our ways.

Bihar election results have shown up the Indian Pollsters for what they are. Speculators and Gamblers. No different from their US cousins. Revealed that Barack Obama’s euphemistic portrayal of Rahul as ‘inept and ineffective’ fitted him to a tee. And my two penny analysis and conclusion- We The People voted Narendra Damordas Modi again and again and again and again because we find him to be SINCERE, more than what we can say about most politicians of our time.

Republic’s democracy gets vanquished in inequity

0

As the age old adage goes, ”Democracy dies in darkness”, its congruity in present times cannot be shunned, ignored nor obliviated. And the most humongous pillar in upholding the very essence of the statement is Media which has been attributed as a fourth pillar of democracy only and only because of its credibility in delivering, entangling and unravelling the truth before the people in its unembellished form ultimately speaking truth to power. However, when the same media who dares to speak truth to power is coerced, brow-beaten, hijacked, smothered, stifled and given a vengeful heads up by those at the helm of power in spite of being scrupulously, meticulously, impeccably and speckless clean then either the latter, i.e. the media is forced by unfortunate circumstances to cow down or be vanquished with mortars.

And here the mortar is nothing but political pressure, unjustifiable, dizzying, falsifying FIR’s, baffling, perplexing arrests and bewildering, unimpeded and unabated intrusions into newsrooms which is absolutely bizarre in the 21rst century by some wretched stooges who pathetically and miserably ague Press freedom for vested interests. Untowardly and unfortunately all hell has broken loose in a particular part of my country, India where an honest, true, magnanimous and ass tongue journalist is being maligned and vilified by a certain political tiller and festering hegemony. All of this began when the shocking, fratricide Palghar lynching case was brought to light wherein two vicars were led by the Police to their untimely doom and reporting of the subject nettled and crabbed some pseudo harbingers who carried out a desperate, cowardly attack on a journalist at 12:15 a.m. in the night after which the Police even refused to take Suo moto cognizance of the situation and rather the journalist faced 200 FIR’s against him.

The rabbling mayhem is furiously glaring back at us right in the pupil of our eyes. The caucus seems to have lost all ground when an ex-Navy veteran who should have been revered for his selfless service to the nation was black-eyed just for sharing a joke on a social media platform.

It consterns and perturbs me to say that while some pseudo journalists might have even refused to broadcast the deeply dejecting and mystifying death of Sushant Singh Rajput, a top Bollywood actor, the various botch-ups and drug racket exposures we had our only Mr. Goswami stick his head out for the truth. It pricks my conscience to see over a 1000 journalists face reckless and frivolous hob nailing FIR’s against them most of whom form a part of the background team. The evil, malice aim is crystal clear. Force a hitherto middle class man, now a top journalist to shut his network. However, they fail to realize that in Democracy it is the people who decide despite being strait jacked and not a particular group of opinionated people.

The fact that many accuse Mr. Arnab Goswami of conducting a media trial is nothing but a pure fallacy. I would like to ask a fundamental, elementary and rudimentary question to them. When a particular scam was brought to light some ‘accused’ journalists brought in their own selected, jury members on their channel just for the purpose of acquitting themselves. Wasn’t that vindicating and cynical tactic too an exemplary example of media trial ? How outlandish was that? Just because a women is a key accused in a particular crime based on incriminating evidences it can’t be called patriarchy or misogyny. Moreover, are those at the cusp of societal and administrative power allowed to give Press conferences accusing people if they don’t sing Doxology’s in their favour?

The TRP scam and suicide case (under which Mr. Goswami had been incarcerated and apprehended) accusing Mr. Goswami, one of India’s most seasoned journalist is nothing but a concocted case filed by base motives. The fact is that Mr. Arnab has been no. 1 not since the past 3-4 years but since the past 25 years. Rather the channel named and mentioned in the FIR must be investigated. Being a 17 year old youth I strongly oppose muzzling of rightful, justified, prudent and lucid dissent. No matter how many times one may try to smother truth, mar it, straggle it, frazzle it, cut it by flints, sting it with nettles, tear it with briers and lame it with stones, time will play its imperceptible game and truth will stick out impregnable, formidable, unfettered, unaltered, untouched and unbounded. Thus, I would like to conclude, “Republic’s Democracy Gets Vanquished In Inequity.”

Diwali isn’t a platform for debate

0

The biggest Hindu festival of Deepavali has been under constant attack from woke intellectuals, Islamists, and pseudo-environmentalists for the past few years. It saddens and hurts that being in India, we now have to defend our festivals and plead to administrations, courts, and NGOs for ‘permissions’ to celebrate. It’s shameful that the so-called celebrities and influencers who are worshiped by millions, especially youngsters, have resorted to ‘evaluating’ Deepavali on merits of their own design.

Diwali greetings now begin with sermons on saving the environment as if a single festival is the cause of all evil on the Earth. No science, logic, or statistics have proved that our celebrations cause any harm to the environment any more than any other festivities. However, it is regrettable that we have to now ‘prove’ and ‘beg’ for the mercy of those who have no business lecturing others. Political propagandists, paid social media influencers, religious bigots, foreign funded NGOs, and sold out journalists earn their bread and butter by exaggerating non- issues to mock and derail the culture of the majority community in the country.

How Economic Times vilifies Diwali (Source: https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/festival-of-fats-from-diyas-to-deep-fried-delicacies-diwali-is-a-celebration-of-oil/articleshow/79108689.cms)

While the ‘bloody’ Bakra Eid is greeted with a gracious ‘Eid Mubarak’ and Christmas a mere ‘Merry Christmas’, Diwali has to be preceded with advisory on making it safe, green, and healthy. The terror unleashed on roads during Muharram goes unseen like how the actual bombs and human bombs are easily forgotten. But educated modern liberals find it very easy to preach about the ghastly and fatal effects of sutli bombs and phuljhadi.

Compare and contrast how ThePrint publishes the greetings for two different festivals (Source: https://theprint.in/in-pictures/delhi-markets-abuzz-with-diwali-shoppers-as-covid-fails-to-dampen-festive-spirit/543418/ and https://theprint.in/opinion/pov/eid-2020-comes-after-a-ramzan-that-tested-not-just-indian-muslims-faith-but-also-patience/427854/)

Slowly and steadily narratives are spread to create a social stigma around Diwali and fill the minds of children and youngsters against their own culture. So-called progressive and inclusive media outlets like TheWire, ThePrint, and others of the like suddenly start publishing articles about the ‘unhealthy effects of Diwali sweets’, the ‘absurdity of spending on Dhanteras’, ‘the plight of Maa Sita’ – all in the months of October and November. Years ago I read a disgusting  piece of writing criticizing lighting up thousands of diyas when millions sleep hungry every day. Now, the thought is a noble one, but then, carefully planting it in the context of a single festival makes it sinister. If millions dying of hunger is the only benchmark for allowing any celebration, then not even a single birthday party can ever be celebrated around the world. There is no conclusive proof that two hours of crackers add so much to pollution that blaming Diwali is the only resolve and banning firecrackers is the only solution to the persistent 365 days an year pollution problem of Delhi. ThePrint chose to curse the Diwali shopping crowds during the pandemic but was absolutely delighted to see the herds of people occupying roads during Eid. Just compare and contrast the headlines in the pictures to spot the cheapest form of hypocrisy.

TheWire’s interpretation of the pious Diwali celebrations (Source: https://thewire.in/communalism/yogis-sarkari-deepawali-made-ayodhya-feel-alone-abandoned-sita)

Let us not forget that any festival – be it of any community or religion – is about celebrations. The ways might differ, the history or context may be different, but at the end people do celebrate. People celebrate a purpose, their shared history, some cause, their happiness, wealth, families – anything and everything. And celebrations mean extravagance. That is why we make weddings, birthdays, election victories, monument inaugurations, global sports tournaments openings, Olympics, etc. larger than life – spending and indulging on those activities which we won’t do otherwise. Resource over-utilization, over eating, noise, some degree of pollution does come with every such lavish event. Diwali firecrackers aren’t any different from the crackers most so-called secular political parties burst around the cities after winning elections. Pawns of propaganda – the pet dogs of Bollywood stars who get scared and terrified with Diwali noise, I believe, are equally distraught with the deafening and unwanted cacophony that comes out of the loudspeakers other times of the day. I don’t think the environment goes greener when trees are cut for Christmas. But, I never noticed other communities, festivals, or events being targeted and banned the way Diwali is. And Diwali is just one example, I have seen numerous such distasteful taunts on the festivals of Holi, Dussehra, and Karwa Chauth as well.

Isn’t all this a carefully designed act of cultural subversion? Doesn’t this come out of decades of minority appeasement politics being played in India? Is this how tolerance and inclusiveness of the natives of a country repaid for? Why are foreign missionaries and fatwa-issuing organizations so much interested in what happens in India on a single night of the year?

State imposed harassment during festivals (Source: https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/on-diwali-delhi-police-arrest-10-people-register-12-cases-for-sale-of-firecrackers/articleshow/79225241.cms)

I am all in for environmental conservation, ethics, morals, larger good, etc., etc. But, I find it pathetic when these dialogues are used as tools just to humiliate one community. Our beloved cricket team captain whose cricket tournaments lead to far more wastage of water and electricity, which could in practice suffice for entire villages, conveniently chose Diwali to turn into a nature lover.

We should ponder, what happened over the years that it has come to this – when we have to write articles to defend our festivals and convince our easily brainwashed contemporaries about being proud of our culture and tradition. I hope the Instagram crazy generation and Antifa-loving ‘cool’ NRIs do someday realize the hypocrisy that goes around before it’s too late – before our festivals become a distant memory and before there is no ‘India’ left to return to.

I say burst crackers under the nose of every moron who tells you not to.

The unchecked decline of West Bengal

0

That West Bengal has turned a labour exporting state is not in doubt. In the absence of any record, both by the centre as well as in states, one relies mostly on guesstimate to arrive at a number of migrants to or from a state. Based on the census 2011 data a recent report of the Reserve Bank of India on finances of states identified West Bengal as a major in-migration state. But an anecdotal look at movement of workers across the nations reveal a different picture. Most urban conglomerates of India and even construction sites or industrial bases have seen migrants from West Bengal working. Even distant Kerala had seen during the Covid times reverse migration to West Bengal. The West Bengal chief minister had mentioned different number of migrants coming back to the state at different times – it ranged from 600,000 to 1,200,000 while labour unions in the state claimed that at least 4,200,000 migrant workers from West Bengal go to other states in search of livelihood. In an age of ease of movement and global trade such migrations need not be viewed disparagingly. Strangely West Bengal and its administration seem to be keen to gloss over this fact.

The important reason for such interstate migration is the huge regional disparities in the context of labour requirements, available opportunities and labour supply across India, mentioned a recent report of the Observer Research Foundation. Industrial regions of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka as also regions witnessing construction boom Delhi NCR for example, are a magnet for migrants. And states which had failed to create employment opportunities for its people, West Bengal is a case in point, has ended up as a major provider of surplus labour. The flexibility and ease of migrations offered by the Indian economy and encouraged such migrations.

What is more such migrant work force has ended up as a backbone of sorts for the Indian economy. Labour short regions offer higher remuneration to the workers from labour surplus regions. Thus people from West Bengal leave their home and seek livelihood in other often enough distant states. Some migrations are seasonal where workers move lured by higher wages and come back once the seasonal demand comes down to move again when opportunity beckons. Some seek round the year engagements and stay back. They move with family and perhaps some time later accept their adopted home as a permanent one. Spread of Durga Puja in distant places illustrate such migration of both skilled and unskilled workers away from West Bengal.

People leave the safety and comfort of home only when livelihood is at stake. West Bengal as various studies have seen is characterised by large scale ‘informalisation’ of the economy. A study by IIM Kolkata in December 2017 had identified this large scale use of informal sector as a reason for West Bengal’s failure to increase its tax revenue. Not only the state remained deindustrialised its refusal to mend the problems contributed to it remaining outside the radar of any investment. The state remained a continued story of slide – for instance the IIM study pointed out that in 2014-15 West Bengal had 9,112 out of 2,30,435 factories in India, while Maharashtra had 28,601 factories, Gujarat had 23,433 factories and Tamil Nadu had 37,878 factories. West Bengal’s share of total Gross Value Added (GVA) in the organized sector remained even lower than the share of number of factories in the organized sector and had declined from 4.10 per cent in 2004-05 to 2.14 per cent in 2014-15. In 2014-15, West Bengals’ share in total GVA is much lower than states like Maharashtra (20.53 per cent), Gujarat (16.87 per cent), Tamil Nadu (9.44 per cent), Karnataka (6.17 per cent) and Andhra Pradesh (5.92 per cent).

Similarly, West Bengal’s share in total number of workers employed in the organized sector in India has secularly declined over the same period—from 9.69 per cent in 1990-91 to 4.69 per cent in 2014-15. The decline is visible in absolute numbers as well. In 1990-91, there were 5,78,651 workers in the organized sector in West Bengal, out of a total of 63,07,143 workers in organized sector in India. In 2014-15, there were 5,04,148 workers in the organized sector in West Bengal, out of 1,05,55,288 workers in the organized sector in the whole of India. Clearly the RBI study of state finances by using the 2011 census data was generous in categorising West Bengal as an in-migration state. A state where industrial workforce has been shrinking there is little reason for workers from other states to move in unless they are suicidal. West Bengal indeed is a labour exporting state in India.

The abysmal economic condition has created an informal economy to accommodate the huge surplus workforce. This could be seen in the appointment of temporary persons even in the state police force – civic volunteers who are paid a measly sum, much less than even a maid in large metropolitan city earns just by working in just one or two households, a much less onerous task. The other way of keeping people engaged is giving them unchecked opportunity of extorting money. This has now been made well known as cut-money economy – that is living by taking a cut (share) from whatever the other person earns or receives. Even the state chief minister Mamata Banerjee was heard in admonishing her party men for taking a ‘cut’ from the grant her government pays to the poor – around Rs 2000 – for cremating their dead.

The failure to create gainful employment – either by attracting new investment in industry or services or by spending from the state exchequer in creating infrastructure and engaging its surplus labour force – remained largely outside the discourse of the state’s mainstream media or thought leaders. This is yet another curious slide of the state which had ushered in Western education to India. The sorry state of intellect, a decline initiated and aided by 34 yearlong Left Front rule, also illustrates brain drain from the state. It has been seen for at least the last three decades that migration starts from the student days itself. First the young students moved to Bengaluru or Pune for studying engineering or management and thereafter they remained outside since West Bengal could offer them no employment suitable to their skill. The massive IT and ITeS growth that had propelled India in the global stage had escaped the state, though its children could benefit by migrating.

When the mediocre remain stuck in a sliding economy, the society and therefore politics, turn rent seeker.  The sorry state of West Bengal administration is an unavoidable outcome of this slide over nearly five decades. Almost two generations of West Bengal are stuck in the rut so deeply today that the leftover intellectuals there cannot even introspect. The entire growth story that Indian economy created – even though it is less than what China could manage – has completely escaped West Bengal. In the absence of any study some anecdotal fact checks can bring to light how much West Bengal has lost. Just check rent in say Guwahati for a two room apartment – the same is less in Kolkata.

Among the four erstwhile metropolitan cities Kolkata is the least in the list for any new product launch in India. Registration of four wheelers is an example. As per the CSO Infrastructure Statistics 2014, there were 43 registered vehicles per 1000 people in West Bengal against a national average of 132. West Bengal is left with people who are compelled to stay there. The report of the technical group on population projection of the Government estimated in 2019 the growth of population at 60 year plus age group in West Bengal – from 8.6 per cent in 2011 to 11.3 per cent in 2021 and 15.7 per cent by 2031. By 2021 West Bengal will surpass the national average in 60+ population group. This illustrates migration of younger people from the state.

The sorry state of West Bengal and the mismanagement of once a leading state over the last five decades is a cancer that the rest of the nation cannot afford to carry nonchalantly any longer. Cancer in one geography is certain to impact the growth and stability of India as a nation. The forthcoming state election in 2021 will test if the democratic system in West Bengal is robust enough to come out of the morass of degradation or the system is twisted deeply with the abuse of more than fifty years to never ever recover. This is a test not only for West Bengal but Indian democracy as well.
