CHAURI CHAURA- A century of non-cooperation movement and the ‘Caliphate’ movement

0

It has been a century since Mahatma Gandhi rose into prominence in Indian Political movement for freedom. It was his opposition of Rowlatt Act – 1919, by using Satyagraha and the promise of winning Swaraj within six months if Hindu-Muslim unity is achieved and some other conditions were fulfilled. Gandhiji always said that there is no Swaraj without Hindu-Muslim unity.

The infamous ‘Butcher of Amritsar’ Brigadier General Reginald Dyer, in a murderous rage killed thousands of peaceful Indians protesting against Rowlatt Act at Jalliawala Bagh on 13th April 1919. He had told his son before he rushed to Amritsar to militarily control the civil disobedience movement of Satyagraha, “Mussulman and Hindus have united. I have been expecting this, there is a big show coming.”

Jallianwala Bagh massacre resulted in violence in Punjab, Gujarat and Bengal that deeply hurt Gandhiji who called off the campaign of Satyagraha against Rowlatt Act on 18th April 1919. However, Gandhiji’s appeal for Satyagraha and Hartals had began to unite and connect the Indian masses towards freedom movement and made him a very popular leader of mass populace across India.

Under guidance of Gandhiji, Indian National Congress held joint conferences with leaders of Khilafat and accepted the Khilafat Committee’s call of non-cooperation against the british. Dr. B R Ambedkar in his Book, Pakistan or the Partition of India wrote that “Swaraj was not its primary object, It was Khilafat and that Swaraj was added as a secondary object, to induce the Hindus to join.”

In 1919, the supporters of ‘Khilafat’ or ‘Caliphate’ or the ‘Islamic State’ movement went to the length of inviting the Amir of Afghanistan to invade India.

On 05th September, 1920 non-cooperation movement against the British Raj with demand of full independence and self-governance was launched by Gandhiji. He was able to successfully unite Hindu and Muslim communities in civil disobedience against the British by supporting the Khilafat movement of Indian Muslims.

On the other hand, the objective of Islamic movement of ‘Caliphate’ was two-fold: to preserve the ‘Caliphate’ / Khilafat and to maintain the integrity of the Turkish Empire. During those years, the word ‘Islamic extremism’ was yet to be mainstreamed, it still existed, though.

The Brotherhood between Khilafat ‘Caliphate and Non-Cooperation& the Cost of ‘Coming Together with Extremists’.
Gandhiji visited Calicut, Malabar on 18th August 1920 to gather support for non-cooperation and shore up the Khilafat base through meetings and fundraising.

A secret abstract of the Bombay Presidency police mentions about Gandhiji’s meeting in Calicut as, “There was little sympathy with the non-cooperation movement at Calicut barring for a few fanatical Mappilla youths.” Gandhiji has said in his speech at Calicut, “If the Mussalmans of India offer non-cooperation to Government in order to secure justice on the Khilafat, it is the duty of every Hindu to co-operate with their Moslem brethren.”

A 12 year old young Sikh boy, namely ‘Sardar Bhagat Singh’ who was witness to the british’s macabre acts of Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the martial law atrocities, saw a messiah in Gandhiji and joined the non-cooperation movement.

However, the Mopla youths whom Gandhiji visited in August 1920 had some other plans. They responded to the clarion call for non-cooperation; as their leaders Variyankunnath Kuhuharned Haji and Karat Moideen Kutty Haji, spearheaded the Malabar Hindu genocide of 1921 that led to mass execution of thousands of Hindus, forcible conversions, rapes of Hindu women and children and destruction of Hindu properties and places of worship.
In his Article in Young India on 20th October 1921 Gandhiji said, “I claim that with us both the Khilafat is the central fact, with Maulana Mahomed Ali because it is his religion, with me because, in laying down my life for the Khilafat, I ensure safely of the cow, that is my religion, from the Musalman knife.”

The Six month long genocide came to an end in January 1922 as british captured the last of the Mopla terrorists. The Congress working committee downplayed murders, dacoities, forced conversions and outrages on Hindu women by labeling the Mopla’s extremist ideology as ‘instances of so-called forcible conversion by some fanatics among Moplas”.

Mrs. Anni Besent, Theosophist, and founder Home Rule League wrote in her book, ‘The Future of Indian Politics’ (Theosophical Publishing House, 1922, pg. 252) :“The fourfold programme was begun formally on August 1, 1920; Swaraj was to be attained in a year, and on August 1, 1921, the first step was taken in the Malabar Rebellion; the Musalmans (Moplas) of that district after three weeks of preparing weapons, rose over a definite area in revolt, believing, as they had been told, that British Rule had ceased, and they were free.”

“The musalmans (Moplas) of that district after three weeks of preparing weapons rose over a definite area in revolt. They established the Khilafat Raj, crowned a King, murdered and plundered abundantly, and killed or drove away all Hindus who would not apostatise. Somewhere about a lakh (100,000) of people were driven from their homes with nothing but the clothes they had on, stripped of everything,” she added further.

Annie Besant’s scathingremarksabout the Islamic character of Mopla outrage are worth an evoke: “Malabar has taught us what Islamic rule still means , and we do not want to see another specimen of the Khilafat Raj in India . How sympathy with the Moplas is felt by the Muslims outside Malabar has been proved by the defence raised by them for.”

She further added that “Malabar has taught us what Islamic rule still means, and we do not want to see another specimen of the Khilafat Raj in India.”

The severity of Mopla genocide was spine chilling still, Gandhijidid not call off the non-cooperation movement nordid he withdraw support to the Khilafat.

Instead in his appeal to the liberals on 07th November 1920 Gandhiji said, “Forcible conversions are terrible but Moplah bravery must command admiration. These Malabaris are not fighting for the love of it. They are fighting for what they consider as religion and in a manner they consider themselves religious.”

Chauri Chaura Incident: 04-02-1922
It was February 1922, roused by Gandhiji and the Khilafat movement;countless volunteers had joined in Chauri Chauraprotests, as the non-cooperation movement had reached its pinnacle.

On 04th February 1922, Police fired on to a large group of Chauri Chaura protesters killing three and injuring several others. The mob got furious and burnt down the police station, with 23 policemen trapped inside. Gandhiji withdrew the Non-Cooperation movement in the wake of the Chauri Chaura incident on 12thFebruary 1922.

Even the Chauri Chaura incident had a extremist angle as according to one version as given in book ‘Event, Metaphor, Memory: Chauri Chaura’, by Shahid Amin, “The real agents (asli log) involved in the riot are, again, other people altogether in the narrative from Madanpur, a Pathan-trader dominated market village twenty miles south-east of Chauri Chaura.”

Like the young teenaged Sardar Bhagat Singh, thousands of youth across India suddenly felt disillusioned from Satyagraha and other Gandhian philosophies due to his abrupt cancellation of the Non-Cooperation movement.

And, I quote Dr. B R Ambedkar, “Mr. Gandhi was anxious to preserve Hindu-Moslem unity and did not mind the murders of a few Hindus, if it could be achieved by sacrificing their lives. This attitude to excuse the Muslims any wrong, lest it should injure the cause of unity, is well illustrated by what Mr. Gandhi had to say in the matter of the Mopla riots.”

Mrs. Annie Besant and Dr. Ambedkar’s apprehensions about the Khilafat being the extremist version of Islam were not misplaced. As we stand in the twenty first century, a hundred years after the ‘Caliphate’ and non-cooperation movement, we are able to witness some of the most catastrophic the events of the previous century through the hourglass, which have proven beyond doubt that corroboration with Islamic extremists has time and again proven to be detrimental.

Gandhiji is long gone, his ideology has been revered world over but in his motherland, his Satyagraha and Khadi have turned into political symbols as Khadi has lost its relevance.

On the other hand, the extremist ideology of Islamic State ‘Caliphate’ is here to stay. A cleric wants to turn Kerala into an Islamic State within the next 10 years. The Islamic State had found one of its initial Indian recruits from Kerala. A recent UN report has stated that there are “significant numbers of ISIL operatives in Kerala and Karnataka states.”

The Malabar massacre will remain a black day in Indian history. There can be no end to Islamic extremism as long we keep mum and remain politically correct. The only way to end the extremism is to fight against it. One has to be really honest and call spade a spade. This not just extremism, it is radical Islamic terrorism.

Maharashtra govt vs Indian celebrities

0

It is really weird and shocking to see Maharashtra’s MVA Govt uneasiness towards the tweets of Bharat Ratnas and the Legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar. I can’t understand that what is the fuss in tweeting the Nation when the foreign invaders like Mia Khalifa, Rihanna who don’t even have have a basic knowledge of the Farm Bills but are supporting the Farmers Protest. Then, Great Thunberg’s small mistake of exposing the global conspiracy and even supporting the Farmers Protests. At a time when the foreigners are interfering into the internal issues of India, we expect Indians to raise there voices in the support of the nation and that is what they along with some Bollywood People did. They tweeted in support of the nation.

People like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Lata Mangeshkar, Saina Nehwal etc are the people who represent India in different walks of life. We expect these people to stand by the nation in its tough times and that is what they did. Neither they supported the govt nor did they supported those protests. Now, does tweeting in favor of the nation also require a probe? Is it a crime? If yes, it exposes the mindset of the MVA Govt. It is a shameful thing if a probe or an enquiry happens for these things. What image will it set towards the people of India? What is this govt up to?

“I would suggest to Sachin (Tendulkar) that he should be careful while speaking on the issues related to other fields,” says sharad pawar

Sachin Tendulkar neither supported the protestors nor he supported the govt on this issue. Why such kind of statement then? Did Sharad Pawar went through Sachin’s tweets? Moreover, what would Sharad Pawar advise to Hollywood people, interfering in the internal matters of India? Won’t he speak on them?

The word given by our PM yesterday in Rajya Sabha “andolanjivis,” is the Maharashtra govt’s personality. The current govt in Maharashtra instead of focusing on the development of Maharashtra, focuses on probing of the tweets by the celebrities who supported the nation when it was the need of the hour, how to put Arnab Goswami behind the bars, bury the truth of SSR Death, Palghar Lynching case, beat those people who speak foul of the CM of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray. It will be better if they focus on the development rather than these issues as it will be better for both the govt and the people.

Busting the myths and fake news regarding Contract Farming

0

An old friend of mine shared this video (use the hyperlink to navigate to the video) on Facebook, where a man explains why the bills are evil.

I listened to the complete video, and pointed out a number of infeasible and impractical assumptions along with fake news circulated by the video. This video is a classic case of fearmongering. Here are some of the points:

Assumption 1: Each and every farmer gets into contract farming.

He uses this assumption to reach to the conclusion that since all the farmer are involved in contract farming and all the farm produce goes to the private traders, the government will not have any grains and will stop feeding the poor as is supposed to according to the National Food Security Act.

Fact: 23 out of 28 states in India already allow Contract Farming by modifying Model APMC Act 2003, do you see each and every farmer in these states with contracts? Contract farming is an option made available to the farmers and is not a mandatory provision. This contract farming law brings uniformity to the contract farming rules across the country; one nation one market. In fact, National Food Security act as he rightly mentioned, makes sure that APMC Mandis stay relevant even when parallel private markets come into existence. They are the cheapest way any government can procure grain to provide subsidized ration. There is no empirical data to back this assumption. He used an infeasible assumption to create panic in people by establishing that the government will abolish public distribution scheme and kill all the ration shops. The bare fact is that the government cannot get rid of APMC Mandis, even if it wanted to.

Fake News 1. With contract farming, the farmer will have to take farming inputs like seeds, fertilizers, pesticides etc. from the trader itself. He would not have the liberty to buy them from other places like he does now.

Fact: With contract framing, the quality and the grade of these farming inputs are decided in the beginning. It no where said in the law that the farmer will have to buy these inputs from the trader itself. Below is the screenshot for the part of the bill that talks about the quality and standards. Where does it say that the farmer has to buy it from the trader? It only says that the trader as well as the farmer should mutually agree to a particular quality, grade and standard.

Let me ask you a very simple question to make it clear. When you were in the school and the teacher asked you to use only A4 size paper for the class project, did it mean that you have to buy it from the school? No, right? You bought it from the stationary nearest to your house. It is exactly the same here, the farmer will have to use a particular grade seed/fertilizer as decided in the beginning with the trader, but he is free to to buy it from where ever he wants. It would be his and only choice where to buy these things.

Fake News 2: The farmers will end up losing their lands to the traders

Fact: The bill explicitly mention that any form of land transfer can not be included in the farming agreement. Moreover, even when a permanent structure is built on the farmers land for whatever purpose, the trader will have to remove the structure at his cost when the contract ends. In case the the structure is not removed the ownership of the structure will be transferred to the farmer once the contract ends.

Assumption 2: No bank will approve any loans for the farmer and the farmer will have to take loans or financial support from the traders.

Fact: As a matter of fact, the bill explicitly mentions that if a farmer needs financial assistance, he can even get it linked to the contract itself. He is free to use any state government or central government scheme.

In fact this is one of the best things. Financial debt has been the biggest reasons why the farmers have been committing suicides. Now with the possibility of linking contracts to the lenders, the farmers will be able to enjoy 3-4% interest rates that the central government provides instead of exorbitant (20-30%) interests charged by the private money lenders including arhtiyas. Of course, the mean money landers are unhappy.

Now, when a farmer is using low interest central government scheme or a state government scheme and a trader cannot add any such clause in the contract, how is the farmer going to lose his land?

Please find a copy of The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill for reference. I don’t know who the man in the video is, he has a lot of other vides on that channel, and all filled with fake news and impractical assumptions.

The truth is that this man is well aware of the bills and is intentionally spreading paranoia amongst the masses. People like him are the reason why there is a chaos. This man is blatantly lying and spreading fake news incessantly.

One another truth is that the old friend of mine that shared this video, after reading my comments did understand that I was making sense. How do I know that? He deleted the share. But not surprisingly, he still continues to promote other similar videos on Facebook.

The fact is that people like these know exactly what they are doing and what the different farm bills mean. There is nothing in the bills that need changing (exception: adding the clause to allow farmers to go to the court for dispute settlement, although, I agree that SDM route is more convenient for the farmers. But since the farmer union asked for it, and the government acknowledged it on Dec 4, it should be appended). The only thing people like these want is a change in a government. They want a spineless government and the old system where the corrupt, cheater, criminal, strongman flourishes and the honest, hardworking suffers. These people had the very same stand for every other major decision the government undertook in the last six or so years. They were against demonetization, against GST, against revoking 370, against CAA, against banning Triple Talaq, so on and so forth.

You should have a look at my article: He turned from being a die hard Modi fan to a Modi hater!!!, you will get a hint as to what is happening.

It is quite straightforward, there are two sides. On one side are the people like these who do not want any kind of reforms and want to keep the “policy paralysis” state as is, on the other side are the people like me, my readers and many others, who want reforms and were fad up of the “policy paralysis” state and don’t what it any more. They are doing to their best to achieve what they want, we also need to give our best to keep what we have. I am doing my part by busting these myths, please help me in spreading the awareness.

Thanks for reading!!! If you agree with me, please do share the article with your friends and family.

Greed for greater notoriety by foreign celebrities from the farmer’s protests

0

The largest democracy is once again under attack by anti-national elements in the name of “peaceful” protests under the guise of farmers which is allowed under Bharat’s constitution. The irony is that many protestors are not the farmers who plow the fields. They are the commission agents and traders/hoarders of agriculture products. They oppose the new Bills because their monopoly is threatened which allows the farmers (a) to sell their product anywhere to anyone, (b) to store inventory, and (c) make contracts and transfer risk to any businessmen even before a crop is harvested.

Put it differently, the new Bills empower the farmers to determine their own destiny and not be constrained. But the protesting “imposter farmers” backed by the opposition political parties do not want to free the farmers from the shackles of their monopoly. In fact, the farmer need not accept these provisions and continue to be marginalized by these middlemen if they wish.

As late as February 5, the Agriculture Minister asked in Rajya Sabha about the objectionable items in the Bills. But neither the elected representatives nor the so-called leaders protesting in the name of farmers have offered a list because there is not much to object about. Reportedly, the paid protestors and spectators are feeding the frenzy in mass protests. The unfortunate attacks on January 26 were, at least in part, carried out by non-farmer anti-national elements who are opposed to one-India. What a tragedy?

Adding insult to the injury, the protests are now being exploited by celebrities like Greta Thunberg of Sweden, Rihanna of the United States, and Justin Trudeau of Canada backed by pro-Khalistan Sikhs. What do they know about farming and the plight of farmers in rural India leading a comfortable life with most Western amenities? Let us review who they are and why they are meddling in India’s affairs?

Greta Thunberg earned fame as a young environmentalist raising her voice about why we as individuals and the nations are not doing enough to protect our environment. Her assertions are justifiable. But her support for the farmer’s protests has no validity except short-term notoriety in social media. If anything, she should discourage such protests because the large crowds needing food, shelter, and amenities come at the cost of increased air pollution and carbon emission. To the best of my knowledge, she does not belong to a farming family and Sweden allows farmers to decide their destiny with a free market economy i.e. allowing farmers to sell their products to anyone, anywhere, any time.

A rich and famous entertainer and businesswoman, Rihanna, got notoriety being politically connected with Mai Lassiter on her Board who fundraised for Obama. She herself campaigned for Hillary Clinton and thus networked with George Soros who lists Modi as one of the dictators. A highly serendipitous way for Rihanna to jump in the fray of protests in India. I surmise it is happening at the behest of Soros who is determined to cause political upheaval in India. Rihanna perhaps knows nothing about farming, including how food gets from the farm to her kitchen table. Who knows if she is in cahoots with Soros for money and/or also aided by the Islamist group(s) who cannot stomach Modi succeeding in moving Bharat’s thriving democracy and development forward? The Islamic organizations like CAIR have poisoned the minds of numerous City Councils in having passed ill-gotten resolutions condemning legitimate laws like abrogation of Article 370 and freeing Kashmir from the crutches of corrupt politicians and family dynasties.

Canada’s Prime Minister Trudeau opposes the Farmer’s Bill to lick the feet of pro-Khalistan Sikhs who are his vote bank and a few in his cabinet. I characterize Trudeau as a misguided leader with little standing among the world leaders and not popular at home. As Prime Minister, he should know better and behave more responsibly; what moral authority he holds to meddle in the laws passed by the Parliament? Does he realize that India’s global standing under the leadership of Modi is not to be reckoned with? I surmise that a large percentage of Indians settled in Canada including Sikhs are Modi supporters and thus his vote bank politics may come to haunt him in the future.

I mentioned only three foreign elements who, I believe, may have not read the Bills but are opposing to satisfy their greed for additional social media exposure, financial rewards, and/or political gains. I wish, they had rather embraced India’s longstanding yoga and meditation to calm their human greed. Let it be a strong reminder to anyone outside or inside that the united Bharat is on the move and determined to raise farmers’ income and free them from the shackles of middlemen. Bharat wholeheartedly welcomes foreign direct investments (FDI) but not the foreign destructive ideology in her internal matters as clearly spelled out by Modi. I am confident that it is just a matter of time before the current protests will meet the same fate as did the Shaheen Bagh protests a year ago.

Group commander NCC, Rajkot– the man on mission- 26 January 2021– special interview

0

For 2021 Republic Day exclusive interview, I was slated to meet the Group Commander of NCC Group Headquarters, Rajkot. I waited in the porch of his office anticipating the familiar arrival of a red beacon staff car of the senior military officer and a hoard of Army men ready to Salute and receive their boss.

It was Ten o’clock in the morning and, I could sense a cyclist speeding towards me as if he was para-dropping with the force of an entire Parachute Brigade of the Indian Army. For this Rajkotian, it was indeed an unbelievable sight. One had never expected to meet a Brigadier Rank officer of Indian Army’s elite Para Special forces cycling on the winding streets of our own colourful city of Rajkot.

As he came nearer, one could read the name tab of the officer’s highly decorated olive green uniform having shiny badges and ribbons; it read ‘S N Tiwari.’

The senior officer from Special Forces Regiment of the Indian Army is Brigadier S N Tiwari, the Group Commander of Rajkot NCC Group HQ. He tells me that a nature lover he is, he prefers to cycle his way to his office rather than ride his staff car decorated with a Brigadier’s pennant and Star Plate.

Brigadier Tiwari is responsible for the training of NCC cadets in entire Saurashtra region. The officers and men under his command impart training to approximately 13,000 cadets from 73 colleges and 113 schools under its Army, Navy and Air Force NCC units. He was commissioned into Sixth Battalion of Parachute Regiment, which he commanded and is an Airborne and Heliborne Warfare Expert.

The Brigadier hails from a very small and remote village of Keshkal in Bastar District, Chhattisgarh. He tells me that formerly, he had been an NCC Air Wing Cadet of Sainik School, Rewa where he was a keen Cross-Country Runner and an excellent Hockey player. The staff at Group HQ has tremendous amount of admiration for the Senior Officer as an upright, proficient, competent and humane person. It is his humble village background has kept the officer close to the men under his command.

The Brigadier feels that the NCC’s job is not only to prepare the young blood to become the country’s second line of defence, in case the need arises but also to train the Indian Youth to become better human beings, citizen soldiers for the rest of their lives. He has been an instructor at Elite Commando Wing, Belgaum and wishes to reign in the same spirit of brotherhood and nationalism besides physical fitness and mental toughness into his NCC cadets.

NCC Group Head Quarters, Rajkot

Rajkot Group HQ looks after the entire Saurashtra region. The region has eight units of NCC that include; 4 Mixed Units, 2 Girls Units, 1 Naval Unit NCC and 1 Air Unit NCC.

Top Class equipment and Systems
The NCC has in its ranks, Virus training aircraft, Enterprise class sailing boats, rowing stimulator and rowing boats. Besides the NCC’s military training regime that includes physical fitness, parade skills, Arms training etc., the cadets are given exposure to basic aviation courses also provided with Service Selection board training.

Adventure Camps and Training
Parachuting and paragliding training is provided to selected cadets at Agra. The cadets are also given exposure to various adventure activities that includes; Little Rann of Kutchh expedition, Para Jumping, Whaler Sailing, Boat Pulling and White water rafting.

Republic Day Camp
Drill is considered as bedrock of discipline. Republic day parade is the test of a cadet’s endurance and his parading skills. Participation in the annual Republic Day Parade is considered as a very honorable feat for any NCC cadet. Therefore, Republic Day camp training is given to the selected cadets who are very good with their drill.

‘Ek Bharat Sheshth Bharat Camp’
‘Ek Bharat Sheshth Bharat Camp’ is a yearly NCC camp, where NCC cadets of two or three states get together for the camp. This enables the cadets to learn and respect the culture and other aspects of the fellow cadets who have come from other states and different cultural background. This promotes unity and diversity amongst the Cadets besides reduces the gender gap as boys and girls are trained together and given the same challenges and tasks.
Lt. Dharavi an associate officer of the NCC is a national gold medal winner in shooting. She is training six NCC cadets in sports shooting. The NCC has imported the best air rifles from Germany for them.

In Combined Defence Services examination, a total of 32 seats are set aside for cadets who hold NCC C certificate provided they have scored 50% in graduation with a minimum of B grade in C level examination. If all this suffices, then they are eligible for appearing in SSB interview for Short Service Commission, even without appearing for CDS written exam.

SSC special entry scheme normally has 100 vacancies reserved for the NCC cadets. NCC training focuses on to become the main feeding ground for the officer cadets for the three services.

For cadets identified for military specific approach, the officers provide them with focused training on SSB. Previous year, Rajkot NCC Group HQ’s 18 cadets joined defence services also 04 cadets cleared the Service Selection Board and were selected as officers.

A Path Breaking Initiative
Brigadier Tiwari took over the Command of Rajkot Group HQs in the month of September 2020 and has since brought in some really positive additions and the training curriculum has also been revamped for better.
For the first time in India, Rajkot Group HQ will test all its cadets to assess their abilities, career leanings and skills through:
1. Counseling,
2. Aptitude testing
3. Psychometric testing.

Under the initiative, Saurashtra University’s psychology department has designed an exclusive testing capsule for the Cadets of NCC. This is going to be a huge project that would definitely require support from the corporate through their CSR funds.

Based on the result of these tests, the cadets will be given career counseling. The young cadets of Saurashtra will be given special focus to enable them to improve their written and oral communication skills in Hindi as well as English as the latter has been found to be a bit of weakness in the youth of this region. The youth will be encouraged to prepare for various entrance exams for the armed forces that includes; CDS, AFCAT and AVNAT. Every year, five top cadets will be identified for special SSB training.

“We are trying to make them into self-reliant, committed citizens of this country who could contribute positively toward nation building. We are in this quest to not only training and create soldiers but to give Saurashtra her citizen soldiers whose character grit and determination would make the entire country take notice and feel proud”. Brigadier Tiwari concludes with remarks.

Jai Hind.

Sharad Pawar’s failed legacy – Part 1

0

Sharad Pawar is 80 years old. He should have been retired long time ago. As they say power is a kind of ‘nasha’ that no one wants to give away easily. Especially, when power comes without the sense of responsibility then it’s probably even more difficult to step down. But there is another reason why Pawar is still sticking around in the political arena. He doesn’t seem to have any confidence in his own colleagues. In other words, he failed to create leaders in the party founded by himself (and probably that’s why there were rumors of merging NCP with Congress). No organization can afford to have such failure if it wants to sustain for longer duration. In fact, many organizations nowadays have appraisal parameter that deals with identifying and mentoring future leaders. Consistently, year after year, Sharadrao failed in doing that. This conclusion is not biased. It can be easily verified by looking at the top leaders that are associated with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Leaders during initial days

Amongst the founders, PA Sangama unfortunately died in 2016 while, Tariq Anwar went back to his previous party (Indian National Congress) in 2018. So, Sharad Pawar is the only active founder of NCP. In their heydays, Praful Patel was also touted as a strong leader from Maharashtra. But then his career had a rough landing due to disastrous merging of Air India and Indian Airlines when he was the Civil Aviation Minister. Since then, his career has not taken off to be the torchbearer for NCP. Around same time, another leader was gaining prominence, albeit at state level. R. R. Patil i.e., Raosaheb Ramrao Patil or more commonly known as Aba Patil was respected across political spectrum for his straight talk and honesty. Traditionally, NCP is not known for honesty and keeping its promises. That’s why he was an exception. Unfortunately, he died in 2015.

Another name worthy of mention here is Chhagan Bhujbal. He was an old ‘Shivsainik’, but later changed party to join Congress and eventually landed in NCP by following his master Sharad Pawar. Corruption charges took him to jail and marred his political image once and for all.

Next generation

Supriya Sule is hardly a politician, leave alone a political leader. She began her political career from Rajya Sabha and later won 3 consecutive parliamentary elections from Baramati, the safest place on earth for NCP candidate to win an election. I can’t think of even a single impactful speech/action of hers in so many years of her political career. The sum total of her and Sharad Pawar is nothing more than Sharad Pawar himself. Being the lone child, she will inherit all the assets and properties amassed by Sharad Pawar in his lifetime. But that the would be her second biggest achievement. The first being, her owning of over 140cr assets (and just ~55L liabilities in 2017-18 Link) as a professional agriculturist cum social/political worker. Amazing ability! She should be a case study for anyone who wants to grow big. But Supriya Sule’s biggest obstacle in controlling NCP post Sharad Pawar is none other than her own cousin brother and Sharad rao’s nephew Ajit Pawar. It was rumored that the rift between the cousins was the reason behind Ajit Pawar’s government formation trick with Devendra Fadanvis in 2019. Be it his ‘Peeing’ remark while talking about people’s frustration on water shortage or his constant disagreement with the then CM Prithviraj Chauhan, Ajit dada knows how to remain in news but like Supriya Sule, he is also not a mass leader. He is not followed and respected as much as one can expect for the person with his level and years of experience in government and administration. May be Sharad Pawar doesn’t want Ajit dada to grow for his own political reason, who knows?

Offbeat characters

As if the rivalry between 2 senior Pawar cousins was not enough, next generation Pawars are preparing to stake their claim on the throne. Parth Pawar (lost MP election in 2019) who is son of Ajit Pawar, and Rohit Pawar (sitting MLA)who is grandnephew of Sharad Pawar, have hardly anything to mention about them. They both lack experience, skills and public presence to be called as leaders after Sharad Pawar steps down. Another wild entry to this offbeat character list is Anil Deshmukh, the sitting home minister of Maharashtra state. He is currently packing punches way above his waist. He was a low-key minister and there was hardly anything to talk about him until he took oath as the state Home Minister last year. He is singularly responsible for tarnishing image of Mumbai Police. His grandkids and future generations will know him as the one who let Palghar Sadhu lynching happen under his watch. He will be known to have failed in solving the sensational double death mystery of Sushant Singh – Disha Salian. People will long remember how he hounded Arnab Goswami, Republic TV, Sameet Thakkar, Sunayana Holey and anyone else who raised voice against MVA govt and especially against the Thackeray family. Times are changing. He must not forget that he is 70 years old and towards the twilight of his career. His future generation and relatives from Katol and Nagpur should not suffer the bad name he earned for them.

Other NCP representatives include Jitendra Awhad, who is widely known for beating common men. He allegedly kidnapped a civil engineer and beat the hell out of him for merely posting something against Mr. Awhad (Link) . Surely NCP cannot go to that level and make him their leader after Sharad Pawar steps down. People like Rajesh Tope, Jayant Patil, Dhannanjay Mundhe, Sunil Tatkare may be leaders in their own constituencies but none of them have public outreach and wide acceptance among NCP supporter across regions. What does this failed legacy mean to Sharad Pawar himself? And probably more importantly how does this leadership crisis going to impact NCP? Let’s discuss that in next part.

The reasons behind Rahul Gandhi’s obsession with Ambani, Adani!

0

If we follow Mr. Rahul Gandhi, it looks like whatever is happening in India or has happened in India in the last six years is Ambani’s and Adani’s doing. You don’t have to go by my words, you could have look at his twitter timeline or his speeches or his official statements, or whichever way he interacts and I am sure you will reach the same conclusion.

Irrespective of the issue the country faces, as per him it is always Ambani-Adani’s doing. He sees them in Demonetization, in GST; he feels their presence in the parliament when the laws are enacted, when the annual Budget is announced; he sees them during elections, in state elections as well as in general elections; he sees them as the cause of the protests. For him they are the everything and the only thing that exist; the reality of everything. It looks like Ambani and Adani are the only two industrialists, billionaires in India who are growing and are the only beneficiaries of Modi’s new India.

Is it really the case? Are they the only people people who are getting richer in Modi’s new India?

When I look at the reports from several institutions like Credit Suisse, Forbes etc. there is an entirely different picture. As per Hurun Global Rich List, 2020 India added three billionaires every month in 2019 to take the total tally to 138 billionaires in India. Not only the number of billionaires, the number of millionaires is increasing in India at a rate fastest than ever. As per a report by Credit Suisse, India added a whooping 7,300 millionaires during the 12-month period leading to mid-2018, taking the total number of millionaires in India to more than 3 lac millionaires. From 2016 to 2017 there was a 20% growth in the number of millionaires. At the same rate, with the same “ease of doing business” practices taken up by the Modi Government, this number is going to be slightly higher than five lac millionaires by 2023 and more than one million millionaires by 2027. One million millionaires! The numbers I have quoted are based on wealth calculation in US dollars and not in Indian Rupees.

Are these numbers good enough for India? You be the judge, I can provide you with a few numbers from other countries so as to give a proper perspective. China had a total of 799 billionaires in 2018 followed by the USA with 626 billionaires. Overall, the world added 480 billionaires during that year when India added just 34 billionaires. As of today, India stands at the fourth place after the US, China and Germany. When we move on to the number of millionaires, we are at eleventh position. USA as of today already has more than 18 million millionaires, we will touch a million mark in 2027, and that too if this government stays. Germany with a total population of 82 million has 2 million millionaires.

For me personally, I really hate it when people like Shashi Tharoor run to the UN begging for funds “Ohh, we had a flood in Kerala and we need funds, help us!“. Maybe some might like that, but I really don’t, that’s why I hate Kerala’s “poor but still happy” tagline. The simple fact is the number of millionaires and billionaires are simply too less for a huge country like India. In 21st century the entire world including the communist countries like China is going along with its industrialists. And here we are in India where certain people are targeting and haunting large business houses and industrialists for their own individual agendas. Not every industrialist is a thief and not every business succeeds on illegitimate income.

As I said, you be the judge if the numbers are good or bad, but these numbers do suggest one thing, that Ambani and Adani are not the only ones who are doing good in their businesses. They are not the only ones who are getting richer. There are lacs and lacs of others who are increasing their wealth every year and every quarter.

So, why is it that every time only Ambani and Adani are targeted? I have asked this question “Why does Rahul Gandhi targets Ambani, Adani and not others?” to myself a lot of times. So far, I have zeroed on four possible reasons, I would like my readers to mention in the comments, which is most likely.

A) Political Funding:

Contesting an election is costly and winning it even costlier. The way political parties have been raising funds has been changing regularly since independence. Gandhi Family excluding Gandhi Ji (the original one Mr. MK Gandhi) have/had a very shady way of raising political funds. While Gandhi Ji was a staunch supporter of corporate funding and considered it absolutely legal and important for democracy to function, Mrs. Indira Gandhi made it illegal in the sixties, to cut the Swatantra Party’s funding. She invented the concept of “Briefcase Politics” where in, if a businessmen needs a license for something or needs government support, he/she would have to come up with a briefcase full of ___ (fill in the blanks). This continued even after her demise, the economic liberalization made it even worse. This way, the ruling party was having all the fun and the opposition parties were all dry.

Please do read my old article: The Cash Nexus: Criminals and Politics to get more details about “Briefcase Politics.”

Congress in the current times is undergoing one of the worst financial crises, they have made it public time and again. And the ruling party is not making it any easier for them. Mr. Gandhi and his party are trying to do the same thing that Mrs. Indira Gandhi accomplished in her time. Now while the party is in opposition, they are trying to build pressure on the business houses by threating and creating hurdles. They are sending a straightforward signal, “if you don’t start funding us, we will destroy you“. As soon as the biggest fish (Ambani and Adani) succumbs to the pressure, the small fish would surrender in no time and moreover when you get the biggest fish, who needs the smaller ones? This is also one of the biggest reasons why they are against electoral bonds. When Companies use these bonds to fund a political party, Congress cannot know which company is funding which party. They can only know that no body is funding them.

B) Populist Politics:

If you read Pt. Nehru’s discovery of India, you will find him explaining how he was winning elections and why he was called the “vote getter”. He described Indian population in the form of a pyramid, something as shown in the figure on the right (the figure is not from the book, I used it just to explain). The highly intellectual, learned, industrialists, rich form the top of the pyramid i.e. their numbers are very less. However, as you move down, richness decreases so do other things like education level etc. “At the bottom of the pyramid are the people who are the poorest and have nothing; the peasants; they don’t ask questions like the middle class does, the peasants would listen to you with the twinkling eyes“. Not my words, Pt. Nehru’s words.

This is why targeting Ambani make sense, he can be quite wonderfully be used to invoke feelings like jealousy, hatred, envy, injustice. “Look he lives in a 27 stories, state of the art, Antilia. What do you have? Nothing? You are poor only because of him. He is Modi’s friend. Modi is giving everything to him that you deserved. Vote us we will take care of crony capitalists” And as Nehru Ji mentioned, these people won’t ask questions; how? Antilia was not built after 2014, it was built in 2010, the construction started in 2006, Ambani did not become a billionaire after 2014, he has been the richest man in India for consecutively 13 years now. If any of Mr. Gandhi’s allegations were real, he would have gone to the courts and slammed Ambani-Adani right then, but he didn’t and instead he was asked by the Court to apologize for his statements. But again as Nehru Ji mentioned, some people will just believe in his rhetoric with twinkling eyes.

C) Hinduphobic Vote Bank politics:

Why is it that the billionaires like Azim Premji (Wipro) and Yusuf Khwaja Hamied (chairmen of Cipla) are never targeted? They are billionaires too, their wealth is also increasing like Adani and Ambani, but whenever their names appear in media it is about the good causes like charity, donations.

As a matter of fact, India has a mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility (section 135 of Companies Act) according to which (excerpt from the act):

Every company having net worth of rupees five hundred crore or more, or turnover of rupees one thousand crore or more or a net profit of rupees five crore or more during any financial year shall ensure that the company spends, in every financial year, at least two per cent. of the average net profits of the company made during the three immediately preceding financial years, in pursuance of its Corporate Social Responsibility Policy“.

So, it is obvious that the mandatory charity done by the company owned by Ambani that posts four times the profit posted by the company owned by Premji, is way more (approx. four times) as per the law. Than why do we hear only good things about Premji and bad things about Ambani? Why is no body willing to acknowledge Ambani’s social contribution? His company has been doing it for years.

Cyrus Poonawalla, another billionaire, founder of Serum Institute of India is a very good example. His wealth increased by a whooping, unbelievable 85% this year, only because of Covid. Just imagine if instead of him, it was Ambani or Adani producing the vaccines and increased their wealth by 85% due to Convid-19 pandemic, what would have Rahul Gandhi and his followers been doing and saying? I guess they would have made you believe that Modi introduced Covid to help his friend and I am pretty sure a lot of Indians would have believed it and would have happily participated in the propaganda. Thank god Covid-19 is international and not just limited to India.

I am not at all insinuating that these people also be haunted, I am simply trying to understand the criteria as to how Ambani and Adani are chosen and not others? I guess this has to do with them being upper caste Hindus (Baniyas). As you might already know, it is a fashion to target upper caste Hindus these days. Thank god, Sundar Pichai (Google) and Satya Nadella (Microsoft) are outside India. If they were in India they would have been the cause of even bigger problems (a Tamil Brahmin and a Telugu Brahmin). By the way Bill Gates and Melinda Gates have become the largest farm land owners (approximately 242,000 acres) in the US. I didn’t see a farmers protest there. Might be possible that the farmers there aren’t as well read as the ones here in India.

D) All of the above. Ambani and Adani checks all the three options I mentioned above.

Thank you for reading! If you liked the article please do share it with your friends and family and ask them the same question:

Why does Rahul Gandhi targets Ambani, Adani and not others? And your options are:

A. To win Political funding
B. Populist Politics
C. Catering to Hindu-phobic vote banks
D. All of the above

Please do mention your opinion/answer in comments. Thanks! Your opinion matters.

Recurring protests: A double-edged sword for the opposition

0

(co-authored by Aditya Rallan and Rajnish Tuli)

India has witnessed a series of protests against the Central Government ever since the NDA came to power. Most of these have been knee-jerk reactions, opposing almost everything that the Central Government enacted, which as we shall see, have not only diluted the nature of the protests by making the opposition look like the boy who cried wolf but has also sent across a message that the protests have been ill-informed and politically motivated. Perhaps the aim was to replicate an IAC (India against Corruption) like movement, as that seems to be a thorn in the erstwhile government’s side. Notably, the disrupting nature of protests has ended up strengthening BJP by consolidating its core vote bank and even getting them new voters. Modi, who is something of an anti-fragile, to borrow from Taleb’s lexicon, has not lost ground despite these recurring demonstrations but has instead let the opposition self-destruct just by forcing them to act impulsively.

For this article, I am focusing on two recent protests – anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and anti-Farm Bills. First, I will focus on how farmers’ protests pushing silent voters and even BJP detractors towards Modi. Then I will proceed to last year’s protest against CAA.

On the farm protests, my observation is based on multiple calls with my two cousins based in Punjab. One of them is well-educated, aged 36 years, and is a first-generation entrepreneur running an industrial unit. He has been thoroughly apolitical, and during my long association, I have never seen him express any political views. I was therefore surprised when he himself had a fairly long discussion about the protests. I will summarise some of the points that he raised, without commenting on their validity –

  1. Why are farmers from Punjab protesting, when Punjab assembly has passed a bill to suspend the farm law passed by Centre?
  2. Many people who are protesting in his circle are wealthy, third-generation farmers who mostly lease the land and earn rent. Many among the active protestors are those who have a major stake in APMC. He does not see any real farmers who are tilling on the ground talking about this. They are mostly from UP and Bihar and now prefer to work in industry rather than in farms.
  3. Why are protests targeting Reliance and Adani? More importantly, why not a single word being uttered against Unilever, Coke, Nestle and Pepsi, especially because they are quite well entrenched in contract farming?
  4. Finally, when political parties all these years have been harping on how farmers are marginalised, and therefore desperately in need of reforms, why such disrupting protests when reforms have been initiated? These reforms have been on the agenda of almost every party. Why the strong opposition now?

He even dug out relevant material and passionately quoted duplicity of AAP, Akali and Congress on the topic. To him, BJP came across as a party willing to negotiate with farmers and even risking their vote bank for trying to uplift small farmers. He also felt the protest is spoiling Punjab’s prospects as a business hub.

The second cousin of mine is 48 years old, based in Punjab, and not a fan of Modi. She belongs to a business family and has borne a grudge on account of GST and Demonetisation. Economically, she belongs to the upper-middle class. Unlike the cousin mentioned above, she is extremely active on political and social issues.

My initial discussion with her happened when farmers were protesting in Punjab immediately after passing of the bill. At that time, she was quite convinced that the government intended to sell farmers’ land, bring in big conglomerates to grab the agriculture sector. Her key point was that why were these reforms required when farmers themselves were not asking for them? In her opinion, this was akin to the manner Modi has bulldozed other reforms on people.

Two weeks back, when we connected again, we had all witnessed the fury of protests at the Delhi–Singhu border. By now, to my surprise, she was showing signs of dissonance towards protests and blamed politicians for fomenting trouble.

What led to this change of heart? It was principally driven by the “means” adopted by protestors. While she still has sympathy for the issue at hand, she was visibly perturbed by the blockage of the highways. The concern is emanating not just from altruistic grounds as common people are getting inconvenienced, but also because supplies of their family business are being impacted. From her perspective, the protest has now converted into a celebratory mela, with DJs and dancing. Such activities indicate protestors are adequately funded by politicians, NRIs and Arthiyas to settle their own agenda rather of poor farmers.

She was also disturbed with acts of vandalisation in Punjab. She mentioned the destruction of mobile towers, disrupting Reliance stores and Petrol Pumps, which she believes will plunge Punjab into a state of lawlessness and harm her business too. Her support to the farmers also seems to have waned, as she mentioned how farmers added stubble burning, electricity reforms and diesel issues to their agenda. To her, the involvement of film actors and singers dilutes the seriousness of issues.

Notably, the deliberately manufactured Hindu-Sikh differences worried her extremely, as she as a kid has witnessed terrorism and its debilitating effect closely. She was shocked at anti-Hindu rant from the protest site and glorifying Bhindranwale. To add to that, the prudish interventions from foreign leaders infuriated her and is cementing her belief that these protests are politically motivated to embarrass the government.

My overall conclusion was that while these people were anti-Modi and sympathetic to the protestors, the manner of the protests has gradually diluted their support. Specifically, the acts of vandalising, the Hindu-Sikh angle, the involvement of actors/singers, the uncompromising stand of the farmers, and bringing in Ambani-Adani have made the protests look unreasonable and maliciously motivated.

Now coming to CAA protest, I would like to highlight my conversations with two people – one of them my friend’s son (20 years old) and another one my aunt (68 years old), both staying in Uttar Pradesh. Both are associated with opposition parties, AAP and Congress respectively. While they occasionally appreciate Modi for his integrity, they consider BJP as anti-minorities, riots instigator and using religion for political gains.

My friend’s son is pursuing graduation and working part-time. He was a fan of Arvind Kejriwal and a great proponent of his governance in Delhi, especially education, utilities and health. He perceives BJP as communal, working for a few industrial houses and exploit national security.

What turned him in favour of Modi was the Shaheen Bagh protest against the amendment to the Citizenship Act 1955. He stated that for him, this law was just normal administrative action to extend much due relief to battered minorities in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

What shocked him was how opposition parties under the umbrella of Left started misinformation campaign that CAA will take away citizenship rights of Indian Muslims. He stated his own experience where educated Muslims in his college and locality started believing this insidious plot run by politicians.

He was quite categorical in his observations – Why India should not help minorities in other countries when we have shared history and we know that they are treated badly? Why India should close its doors to victims of Islamic fundamentalism? Why is the entire political class comfortable with Rohingya and Bangladeshi Muslims but not with Hindus? He found some evidence of citizenship amendments carried under Congress rule during the Sri Lanka crisis and questioned the duplicity of opposition parties.

A key factor was the disruption theme that is being witnessed in farmers’ protest as well – he said the protest had derailed life of thousands of people in the NCR region, as medical aid and access to school became a challenge for local people and people struggled to reach Noida and Ghaziabad. None of the opposition leaders made an effort to educate protestors about CAA but used the platform to defame India at large. Another common theme was the involvement of Bollywood celebrities who had no knowledge of the subject (referring to Farhan Akhtar). He remarked that the CAA protest made him question the superficial and anti-Hindu character of secularism practised in India, which has been propagated by Congress and Left all these years. Similar to the farmers’ protest, the inflammatory speeches and slogans raised against India and Hindus from the protest site made him rethink his support to AAP.

I had few calls with him during the CAA protest period and observed how the opposition, by supporting meaningless and manufactured protests, is helping Modi and BJP to attract new sympathisers. Notably, the opposition has been often accused of appeasing certain sections of the society, a factor that played a role in their defeat in 2014/2019. Through lending their support to anti-CAA protest, they are just cementing people’s opinion about their minority-appeasing stance and duplicity on critical issues.

My Aunty, on the other hand, is a true-blue Congress woman – till date she reveres leaders like Nehru and Indira and supports the party for their contribution to the freedom struggle. She used to vociferously defend Sonia’s foreign origin whenever anyone raised that issue.

On CAA, we had a short discussion in December 2019, where she said Modi government has done the right thing by extending citizenship rights to minorities from Islamic countries, as we are aware of their plight. When I asked her what she thinks of opposition criticism of CAA and Shaheen Bagh, she stated that this is characteristic of any opposition, even BJP would have done all this for a few days.

We reconnected in late February post-Delhi riots. She was quite livid with loss of life and property due to the Delhi riots. What surprised me were her observations about the role of the opposition, which she ignored in our first conversation. She stated why are opposition parties getting so unruffled because more Hindus will be getting citizenship. Where should Hindu go when atrocities are being committed on them in Pakistan, their daughters being taken away? Congress should introspect why they have ignored this issue for so long. She recalled some news program where Dr Manmohan Singh requested for such rights for Pakistan minorities. She said whenever she visits Noida and Delhi hundreds of Bangladeshis are working there and no political party objects, but the citizenship of a few Hindus getting fast-tracked has brought the national capital to a halt.

She said it hurts to see Congress leaders making speeches from the same platform in Shaheen Bagh, from where people are abusing India and making calls to break Assam. In her eyes, Congress always placed nation above anything else (she recalls 1971 and Operation Blue Star as instances), and this came as a rude shock. Why are they abusing Hindus and India? They should keep their anger restricted to BJP. She said why are all opposition leaders disturbing communal harmony by running a misinformation campaign around Indian Muslims. They are protesting considering a hypothetical scenario where Muslims’ citizenship will be in danger, but no one protested when Kashmiri Pandits were displaced.

As I observed in the case of farmers protest, the wanton destruction of property and road blockage reduced her sympathy for the protestors. According to her, when the option of going to court is available, why are the protestors destroying the democratic structures established by Congress itself.

She was pained how Shaheen Bagh was used to defame India during the US President’s trip. She gave an example of how we brush aside our differences when guests are at home, but in a new disturbing trend, the opposition will go all out to get an audience from the guest for India’s internal issues. Especially when Congress has been against internationalising issues such as Kashmir.

When the political class tries to glorify foreign interventions on internal issues, it is generally not taken well by the public. It just shows the opposition has lost faith in their own credibility and is trying to get some confirmation from external bodies.

After collating my thoughts and observations covering two protests in the recent past, I strongly feel that the opposition is inadvertently helping BJP and Modi. By protesting on nearly everything, with every protest ultimately aimed at defaming India at the international stage, disrupting the life of commoners, destruction of property, and a tirade against Hindus, the sympathy of the fence-sitters gradually shifts to Modi. As someone put it succinctly, the protests start from opposing Modi and end up talking against India. By focusing on matters where their duplicity can easily be exposed, opposition parties are showcasing their intellectual deceit and moral incompetence on critical national issues.
