COVAX: Be the voice that matters and not noise

0

The second wave of the pandemic has bought India on her knees as the pandemic razes through the country bringing in death and devastation, we are witnessing one of the gravest problems of 21st century engulfing our nations. I wonder if this has been a humbling experience to entire nation or is it going to be another business as usual for us (Imp note: I am not using words like state government, central govt, officials, religious events/figures etc.., I am using word US and WE because the ONUS is on US as a nation to wake up and realize).

I have sequenced this article in three sections 1) Myths to be burst 2) Facts to digest 3) Way forward. It is important to read it in that sequence as if we don’t burst the Myths that everyone of us believe in, we will never accept the facts and continue to live in denial and never move forward.

Myths to be burst

India has unlimited resources and we are in a rich state: This is an important myth that needs to be burst, many of us have psychologically assumed that India, as a country has access to unlimited wealth (Akshaya Patra) and somehow the corrupt and rich have kept it away from poor through devious means. While some of it might be true but the fact remains the percentage of corrupt and rich across the world is no different from India. Over the years output from India has been limited. Our overall capabilities in wealth creation barring service industry have been limited over the past few decades. Any attempts at wealth creation have been dealt with severe mistrust and agitations over the years.

Covid is the only priority:  Handling of Covid should and must remain the top priority but it should not blind-side us. We should not live under the assumption that rest of the aspects of life like business, daily needs and development can come to standstill. These aspects   need to move on side by side along with Covid handling, lack of opportunities and Joblessness can cause anarchy and that is a rabbit hole we cannot dig for ourselves. Also remember Covid has not deterred our enemies prime example been the last year Chinese aggression and even right now the conflict in middle east proves that the world will continue in its own way and there will be no philosophical outcome of Covid for humanity (Indians have tendency to search for these outcomes) .

Population growth is a huge plus: Agreed, a decade and half ago working young population was a huge plus for the country. But it has reached a tipping point where this population growth is no longer sustainable for the country with the geographical size of India. Potential reverse Globalization (due to Covid) and increased automation means future job market is going continue to shrink. And we should collectively consider population control measures to sustain in the new world.

Facts to digest

No one Predicated such a huge surge in second wave: Let us be honest and sincere about accepting the fact that no one predicted such a huge jump in cases in second wave. In fact, some surveys were hinting at large sections of population developing anti bodies for Corona, data in hand and even mathematical models were predicting a peak of 1 or 1.5L per day and not this monster surge. All of us were certainly caught off guard and this is nothing to be ashamed of and there no point in indulging in a slug fest over it. There is no point in spending energy in debating whether elections in one part of country caused surge in another part or point that protests with huge gathering in December and January didn’t have any such surge, remember US elections were conducted at the peak of Covid pandemic without even access to vaccine. Basic human behavior is always to start and move towards normalcy, human race has never been dictated by fear but by survival instinct and this behavior is exhibited even today at the peak of pandemic. It is but natural for every leader to push towards new normal way of life rather than create fear and panic. If we don’t accept this fact, we will continue to go in circles of blaming each other.

Vaccine hesitancy:  Vaccination or lack of it has been blamed for the current situation and numerous questions being raised over the lack of planning or pre ordering of vaccines by the governments. While some of it is genuine and deserving, it is also important to note that the initial hesitancy of people to take the vaccine and lukewarm response from people on the ground towards vaccination. There were genuine concerns on part of government in going all out and investing in one vaccine (read myth 1). Vaccine Efficacy results coupled with the blood clot reports from Europe did put doubts in minds of decision makers. It is one thing to handle a pandemic and completely different thing to handle a man-made disaster. What If vaccine created side effects?  No one in his right mind will be willing to take that risk. Hence blaming decision makers on vaccine policy is not entirely correct. Also, age profile of the second wave infections and deaths should provide some insights into how much this hesitancy costed us

Vaccine Diplomacy: Export of vaccine to other countries is not just a largesse from Indian government but it is also a legal requirement that SII had with AstraZenca and it is an important fact to consider as no country/company can violate legal and IP related requirements (read more on COVAX).

Be wary of Seasonal Experts:  One of the challenges all of us face in this modern era of over communication is the flurry of “seasonal experts”, these are people who want to be on TV or newspaper article and are willing to cater to the mood of the season. They either predict something to increase the mood (in this case fear) or criticize something as everyone wants to hear that line of thought. It satiates our ego to indulge these experts as it goes with our mood even though it is not based on facts; it is imperative that we move away from these “seasonal experts” and start believing in opinions based on data on the ground and focus on bringing the real analytical and research experts to the fore rather than publicity seeking one (I predict economic experts coming in next season after second wave)

Way Forward

Vaccine policy: One of the biggest blunders that the current dispensation made is announcements of free vaccination, there might be a political dividend to be reaped out of this but it will spell disaster in long term. This will stretch the state’s budget more towards temporary relief measures rather than on future investment of disease study which is critical. It is equally imperative on part of people to stop expecting these freebies from government. There is bigger cost we as a nation have been paying by accepting these freebies. If we have to learn anything from this Covid experience it is that temporary relief measures are always temporary and they satiate the temporary needs while bring in more pain long term

Research and Development: Healthcare infra needs drastic improvements in India but no infrastructure can handle pandemics.  Covid is fourth such virus related disease that has impacted the world in last decade others being SARS,Ebola and Nipah. It will be naïve on our part to think that ending covid will solve all future problem, we should anticipate more such new virulent diseases impacting us in the coming years. And this is where as a country we need to focus more on disease study and invest in R&D by collaborating with private Indian Pharma companies. We should make our investments in collecting more data and building technology and research that can help us to rapidly respond and handle such pandemics from spreading fast in future, early detection and local containments are future solutions.

Be the Voice that matters and not Noise:  India is a thriving democracy with limitless and never-ending debates, this is a great virtue and we must never lose this virtue irrespective of our ideological differences. However irrespective of our ideological differences we should never lose sight of Indian interest, we as a thriving democratic nation and we need to be “Voice that matters” and not just noise that everyone ignores. COVAX was a Global initiative that India was part of and it was an important initiative for all developing nations to fight together against the western leaders and its media hypocrisy. The west which thrived on the burning bodies in crematorium has absolutely no answers to sharing of vaccines IP even in such devastating times for the world, profit making continues to be primary objective. It is this context our experts and media house completely failed us instead of becoming the voice and pushing the COVAX agenda we just became noise that continues to fall and focus on our internal fault lines.

It is high time now we take up COVAX and start pushing the west to share the vaccine making IP to rest of the world. Finally, wellness initiative through Yoga and nutritious eating are the key to future well-being of human race and we need inculcate this in our future generations

Compliments, criticism or just complaints by Lutyens media and opposition party leaders about Corona virus in India

Agree or not, let me call it China’s coronavirus, cleverly dubbed COVID-19, which has caused havoc worldwide with millions already dead and counting. Unfortunately, India has experienced an unexpected surge in deaths, despair, and infections (second wave) while things seem under control in the United States and other countries. The U.S. has about 60% of its population at least partially vaccinated leading to the relaxation of the masking and social distancing expectations, a poor policy decision in my informed opinion. How can we be sure and complacent that the second wave caused by a variant like India is less likely in the U.S.? India had a relatively lower death and infection rate in late 2020 compared with the United States which appears to be turning tides in 2021.

Is India’s war against the deadly pandemic as bad as the “fake” media and/or political leaders of the non-BJP parties make of it? While, every death of a loved one means 100% for a family, the statistics as a country deserve to be reported accurately and respected. Reportedly, there are 87 nations with as many Prime Ministers or Presidents in Europe and North America combined with a cumulative population of about 1.34 billion. India with nearly the same population has just one Prime Minister Modi. However, the pandemic has resulted in nearly 82.7 million infections and 1,9 million deaths in 87 countries in comparison to 22.7 and 0.25 million, respectively in India. The readers may do the math in the rates of death and infections and decide whether India deserves to be complimented for overall good management by the leadership or be continuously bombarded with complaints by dubious minds. I must repeat that the statistic is not comforting for grieving families, but India deserves due recognition for her all-out efforts on a war footing.

What the sensational media likes to portray in the headlines is multiple bodies of the dead on the sacred funeral pyre as if all of India is on fire. Many elite and powerful belonging to the Lutyens media for decades, once favorite of the ruling party, now sit around to gossip, sway opinions and create sensational news. The combination of politically corrupt minds and Lutyens media are the deadliest. They are unwittingly incapable of differentiating what deserves compliments and/or criticism and where it is appropriate to condemn and complain rationally. For example, they are squarely complaining why did Modi not impose a complete lockdown which was criticized in 2020 for the socio-economic hardships for everyone. Even a nationalist and populist leader like Modi who has dedicated himself to further the development, dignity, democracy, and diplomacy on behalf of her country can’t win the crooked minds who refuse to rationalize and analyze the facts.

Everyone is asking why there are not enough hospital beds, respirators, and oxygen supply to meet the growing needs of the patients? The questions are justified but why point fingers only at the central government and Modi’s leadership without mentioning that healthcare is truly the State issue per India’s constitution. It is very unfortunate and in fact inexcusable, that the Chief Ministers of Delhi, West Bengal, Kerala, and Madhya Pradesh among others have done little to nothing to improve health infrastructure since the first wave and with funding and/or equipment made available through PM CARES fund.

The hue and cry for oxygen surprised me the most. I had never heard of this kind of crisis due in part because many States failed to install oxygen generation plants after 2020 coronavirus. India’s biggest challenge was not the overall oxygen generation capacity but the logistical nightmare in transporting oxygen to the cities across the country. Where is the credit for dozens of oxygen trains, air force planes, and navy ships transporting tankers from wherever they were available? It seems that Lutyens’s media has a very short-lived memory. How can they forget what was happening in New York in the most advanced economy just last year- not enough hospital beds, respirators, and PPEs when the coronavirus was raging unabatedly? The point is that the tsunami-like second wave in India emerged too fast without warning that even the most advanced healthcare systems could not be sufficiently ready. India’s leadership, health professionals, and people on the frontline worked 24×7 to save lives as best as possible risking their own. Those who died must be saluted for their heroic efforts and deserve our highest compliments and accolades.

Looking back, India managed to ward off the pandemic well in 2020. Then people became unduly relaxed and complacent about masking and social distancing. The country assumed premature “victory” over the vicious COVID-19 to find it raging havoc in April 2021. India unveiled indigenous vaccines, the first such scientific innovation encouraged and fueled by the leadership and started vaccination in mid-January. However, the dubious politicians willfully characterized it Modi-vaccine to spreading rumors that it will make individuals impotent. Even the vaccine was politicized to create a wedge based on religion. Such misinformation campaign led to hesitancy for vaccination which was offered to all at no cost in the government facilities. While vaccine production was in full swing with limited usage in India, there was a stockpile of this highly sought-after commodity which the Modi team rightfully used to save lives and earn global goodwill through diplomacy.

When the pandemic returned with vengeance creating fear, the demand for vaccination increased which could not be met with the manufacturing capacity. In part, the U.S. had placed an embargo on the export of raw material to manufacture vaccines and thus affecting the production capacity. It was only Modi’s global leadership and diplomacy which led the U.S. to lift the embargo. Then came a hurried policy decision to vaccinate everyone above the age of 18 which was well-intended but poorly timed to exacerbate the demand with an already limited vaccine supply. What the media and politicians are questioning now is why Modi help hundreds of countries earlier and thus created the shortage of vaccine in India as if Modi had a lens to see the future. Perhaps, few people know that the vaccines need to be preserved at very low temperatures which limits India’s capacity to hold vaccines in storage for too long. The vaccines transported to the field for vaccination in secondary and tertiary sites severely limit the storage capacity. In my view, the Modi team must accept criticism but not the blame for miscalculation and the poor timing of policy decision to lower the age to 18.

India’s most recent decision to give a second vaccine nearly 3 months after the first dose is fully backed by scientific facts but the media and politicians refuse to accept it. The fact is that many other countries are doing the same to have a larger population with at least one vaccine as a hedge against infections. People with crooked minds to defame and blame Modi are once again blowing it out of proportion and the media is being irresponsible in not educating the public at large.

The last point about the large political rallies for Parliamentary elections in several States, the Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh, and the congregation of Kumbh, an event every 12 years. In my view, all political parties and the Election Commission should have worked together to scale back the large rallies sooner than they did at last. However, there is no justification for blaming only Modi and his party. The Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh should have been postponed rather than letting the fatalities build up in the rural areas due to campaign gatherings and celebrating victory. Allegedly, over 700 schoolteachers lost their lives because of their duty as election officers, a loss not only to their families but to the education force which is already stressed. Likewise, Kumbh should have been scaled back to allow only the religious leaders to do their rituals in a more controlled environment. With all that criticism, let me confess that hindsight is always 20/20. I am not the decision-maker, nor I know what was at stake in not letting the elections and Kumbh happen? It is important to mention the misguided farmer’s agitation going on for months. It is likely a hotbed for rising cases of infections and possible deaths but the select politicians backed by the Khalistan movement are not willing to let it go. Why Lutyens media do not give them the wisdom to go home and return, if they must, only after the raging coronavirus?

The most concerning is that even the educated and well-informed argumentative Indians lose objectivity and succumb to politics for the wrong reasons and personal gains. Lately, the opposition parties appear to have the sole objective of “opposing” Modi because they don’t know how to win elections against the policy of development and raising hopes and inspirations for the young minds of India. What politicians of ill-will do instead is to spread rumors and misinformation and promote nepotism and corruption. Some members of Lutyens media having lost credibility in India are now working for the Western outlets. They are occupied in crafting blame, creating fear and anxiety, develop false and fake narratives about India, and condemn what Modi says and does? Most unfortunate is that they are engaged in such practices at the peril of India which offered them wit, wisdom, and wealth through education and made them the elitists. The other unfortunate part is that many Indians still believe the fake narrative of the West more than the nationalist viewpoint of emerging Indian media.

BJP’s Bengal defeat: How Mamata did a Modi on Modi

0
Modi’s Development + Hindutva Vs Mamata’s Development + Secularism

By the time you read this, it’s almost 2 weeks, since the election results in 5 states. Also, I am fully aware that you have watched many programs on Bengal results and must have read many articles on the same subject. Hence, I was not sure as to why should I do this video.

But then, till now I have not come across one analysis which discuss the two reasons, which I think are the main reasons behind BJP’s defeat in Bengal. Also on May 14, Prime Minister Modi transferred Rs 19,000 crore to the 95 million bank accounts belonging to farmers, and I thought I must do this. Now if you are baffled about Bengal elections and the Rs 19,000 crore handout, please hold it. It is coming.

So, with that settled, let us come down to why BJP lost Bengal. The, two reasons are :

1) Tactical voting by minority community. 2) Mamata turning the tables on Modi by using his own development model.

1) Tactical voting by minority community.

To explain this, we need to look at the percentage of votes and seats won by the 4 major parties in the 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections.

Party20162021Gain/Loss
Vote ShareNo of seats wonVote ShareNo of seats wonVote ShareSeats
TMC44.9121147.92132.992
BJP10.2338.17727.974
CPM19.75444.60-15.15-44
Cong10.162630-7.16-26
Total85.0228493.62908.586

In 2016, these 4 parties together got 85% of the votes and 285 out of 294 seats. In 2021, the percentage of votes increased to 94% and 290 seats. But this time almost all the CPM and Congress vote went to BJP or TMC. But that is not all. In 2016, AIFB, RSP, CPI, and independent candidates together had 15% of the vote. It decreased to only 6% in 2021. And 15% of CPM, 7% of Congress and 9% of these smaller parties went to BJP or TMC.

As a result, the BJP’s vote share jumped from 10 to 38, which is an incredible performance in itself. But for me, that’s not what is the highlight of Bengal elections. The 3% incremental votes, which TMC added to its 45% is something that startles me. In 2016, TMC got 44. 91% votes. Which was a stupendous performance anyway. By 2021, Mamata had ruled for 10 years. A sense of fatigue or anti-incumbency had crept in. There were also complaints against Amphan Relief Funds and anger against cut money. Yet, not only Mamata came back for the third time, but TMC’s vote share increased by 3% and seats by 2.

How did this happen? The miracle was made possible only by the tactical voting by the minorities. To understand the magnitude of Muslim consolidation behind Mamata, some more data may be useful. In 2016 TMC had secured 51% of Muslim votes. In 2019 General Elections it had risen to 70%.

And is 2021, 75% of Muslim voters chose TMC. This is mother of all consolidations.

So what? Liberal press argues. Since Modi, even Hindus have been aping Muslim voting behavior. Right? But, in no elections, you will see this kind of consolidation behind BJP. And voting in Bengal too supports this argument. Only 50% of Hindus voted BJP in the 2021 Assembly elections and 39%, TMC.

And what for? Only to stop pro-Hindu BJP! This is called social consciousness! Otherwise, there are people in Delhi who overthrew a government on the price of onions and are voting anti-nationals and closet Jihadis for free water and cheap electricity.

2) Mamata doing a Modi on Modi

My second point is, that after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Mamata started implementing the same model of development that was championed by Narendra Modi. Even before, there were 250 schemes in Bengal, especially for women. But from August 2019, she started re-emphasizing schemes like Kanyashree, Rupashree and Sabuj Saathi. And on December 1, 2020, she announced a program called ‘Duare Sarkar’, meaning ‘Government at your Doorsteps’.

Kanyashree: Cash transfer for school going girls

Khadya Saathi: FSB by Bengal Govt.

Shiksha Shri: One-time financial assistance to SC-ST students of V-VIII.

Rupashri: 25000 help for marriage to girls from poor families.

Akhyashree: Scholarships for Minority Students

TMC government launched a special effort to reach out to the people, focusing on the 11 most important schemes. Apart from the 3 schemes mentioned above, there were schemes like Khadyasathi, Shikshashree, Jai Johar, Taposili Bandhu, Akhyashree. All these schemes are similar to Modi’s PM – Kisan or Ujwala. We will look at some of these schemes in one line.

From these 5 schemes, you can understand that they are targeted either at Women, SC-ST or Minorites. In tone, tenor and target, they are similar to the schemes by Prime Minister Modi. Like schemes by central Government, these also cater to the specific financial needs of a small group (Cohort).

Financial Gerrymandering:

Dividing voters into geographical areas to suit you is called Gerrymandering in American English. After victory in 2014, Modi engineered a kind of socio-economic Gerrymandering for the first time by opening Jan Dhan accounts and identifying the most needy groups.

Mamata imitated him in 2020, or in fact he went one step further. She ensured that the benefits are diverted to women and minorities. And that worked in 2021.

Although the BJP has gained a lot from the May 2 results, the results in Bengal are worrisome. Today, although the BJP is the only national party and Modi’s popularity is undiminished, the BJP has not had much success in the 2018 Assembly elections. In 23 elections held in these 4 years, BJP has won only 9 on its own.

In two states (Nagaland and Bihar), the Chief Minister is from the Alliance partner. In Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, about a year and a half after the elections, the incumbent Congress government was overthrown and the BJP reinstalled its Chief Minister. Even if these two states are combined, there are BJP governments in 11 out of 23 states and non-BJP governments in the remaining 12 states.

Amongst these 12, only one state of Rajasthan has a Congress CM. Elsewhere, there are non-Congress, non-BJP chief ministers. And the BJP has not been able to defeat these non-Congress leaders. So be it Kejriwal in 2015 and 2020, Nitish Kumar in 2017, or Naveen Patnaik , or Mamata in 2021. Hemant Soren of Jharkhand, or Chandrashakhar Rao of Telangana can also be added. After 2014, BJP, non-Congress (except Akhilesh Yadav) could not defeat the leader in the state.

What is the common denominator in all these CMs? They all like Mamata are keen disciples of development + secularism. For example, Kejriwal, like Mamata, pays salaries to Muezzin. Don’t be confused, the Maulavi of course is paid. Hemant Soren says tribals were never Hindus. Chandrasekhar Rao has also spent Rs 6,000 crore on minorities in the last six years.

The funny thing is, that through this development + secularism model, Congress has ruled for decades. The comparison my anger BJP supporters. But, if all the glory is captured by NREGA, PM-Kisan, or Ujwala and economic reforms, are forgotten, then where is the difference. The only difference is that BJP works on development + Hindutva and Congress on development + secularism. Mamata, Kejriwal, Chandrashekhar Rao do the same. And they have defeated the BJP using the Congress formula.

Earlier I had, given an account of 23 assembly elections since 2018. The point to ponder is,why did the BJP lose the states it won in 2014 (Rajasthan, Jharkhand), or why can’t the BJP defeat leaders like Naveen Patnaik or Chandrasekhar Rao and Mamata? This is because, if the people do not see any difference in economic and administrative delivery in 5 years, then they go back either to their old party or the local leader.

At times it worries me to the death that has BJP forgotten its middle class, taxpayer voters? The focus sometimes seems to be only on schemes like PM-Kisan or Ujwala.  Even this middle class expects economic progress from this government. How many elections BJP thinks Hindutva can win them? The second Corona wave is of course not helping. Now what if infections continue to rise and unemployment skyrockets, like it did last year? Which scheme will please the middle class? Free two-wheelers for free education? Or free houses?

Now, if anybody is capable of getting rid of this Welfarism, disguised as Development, it’s none other than PM Narendra Modi. But just out of statism, if he refuses to do so, then be rest assured, Development+ Secularism gang will be ready to challenge BJP in 2024.

A tale of Jewish spirit: The most intimidating defense

A common belief says it’s the power of the Iron Dome that protects Israel from the rain of Rockets from Hamas right now in the ongoing conflict. Of course, Israel is the world’s finest when it comes to military advancement capabilities and equipped enough to protect its people from any advancing enemy. But is it just Military Power that saves Israel, or is there something else? One might answer that it’s the support of America and all other Western allies that confident Israel to be such a formidable force, that’s true too, Israel is getting support from powerful allies, but still, there is something else that empowers Israel, that something is the vigour of the “Jewish Spirit”.

This Jewish Spirit, which many might call “Zionism”, keeps Israel and Jews alive and making them visible on the world map, otherwise without this Israel would have been wiped out when it was first attacked in 1948 itself by the forces of Arabs. This Jewish Spirit comes from the sense of Civilization Wound, the trauma of an exodus, the plight of being pushed into concentration camps, and the agony of centuries of injustice perpetrated on Jews for just being Jews. Jewish Spirit is about unbreakable unity and strong intentions to protect their community and promised homeland from further invasions.

Israel and the Palestinian issue is not a struggle for an occupied territory, but it’s a Civilizational Struggle and always contested as a holy war by Islamist’s based on the fundamentals of Islamic religious order. For radical Palestinian Jews are dhimmis and infidels who occupying the Palestinian land which is a home of Allah, and this conflict is all about freeing the home of Allah from the infidels and turning this region back into Darl al-Islam (Abode of Islam) from Dar al-Harb (Abode of War)”. This kind of Islamic Supremacy makes peaceful coexisting with Infidels Jews a fallacy, and “Death of Israel and Annihilation of Jews” is only a final desired goal of the Palestinian “resistance” or intifada”.

Muslim fanaticism since the birth of Israel in 1948 played it all part in breaking the Jewish fortitude, from the plight of 8 wars imposed by Arabs on Israel, 2 intifada war waged by Palestinians, and all kinds form daily terrorist attacks: like car bombing, suicide attacks, knife stone-pelting, and hatred antisemitic propaganda against Israel all combined but failed to break the Jewish Spirit.

The cause of Palestine is used by Islamist’s to breed more Islamic Fundamentalism. That’s why every other Jihad organization tries to be a participant in this Palestinian resistance against Israel starting from Hamas, al Qaeda, Muslim Brotherhood, ISIS. PFLB to Hezbollah led by Iran all rallies and tires to champion the Palestine cause of resistance based on sheer hatred for Israel and Jews. Many common Palestinian probably seek peaceful coexistence with Israel, but Islamists never let those voices be out.

There is a need for Palestinian resistance not against Israel but the current leadership of Palestine. The common Palestinian who seek peace with Israel must rise against their leadership who incites them to be part of this useless religious war against Jews, and Islamist cult-like Hamas needs to disown by Palestinian people because Hamas believe in making Palestinian suicide bombers rather than educated professionals,

The Palestinian needs democracy and a model of governance which can meet the standard of democracy that exists in the west of Jerusalem. With the thought of Islamic fanaticism and supremacy, it’s quite impossible to break the Jewish Spirit. If Palestinian continue to fight it as a religious war, then they should not complain about why Israel is so ruthless towards them. The power of the Jewish Spirit along with the Iron Dome will keep on making Israel a conqueror in every conflict.

Mahua Moitra, You only know how to win election by making false promises

The words of Walter Lippmann beautifully captures the essence of democracy. It  goes as the following, “In a democracy, the opposition is not only tolerated as constitutional but must be maintained because it is indispensable.” Being a learned member of the parliament of the largest democracy in the world, I am sure you are very well aware of it. But your recent article in New York Times “I know what it takes to defeat Narendra Modi” was a litany of lies promoting sycophancy over talent. As an Indian student in University of Alberta, I would like to take this opportunity to make you realize that being a member of Indian Parliament, you should be more responsible before writing such lies in a global media like New York Times.

As per your article the second wave was rising up in India on February 26th when Election Commission of India declared an 8 phased election in West Bengal. You tacitly tried to put the blame of corona mismanagement by the state Government to Election Commission but the data available from Government of India website says in between 07th to 14th April active percentage of Corona cases in West Bengal and other state where election was going on was around 5%  in comparison to around 14% in other badly affected states like Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chandigarh and Punjab; surprisingly, no election was going on in those states.

During this pandemic, on several occasions we have seen Prime Minister Modi hold virtual meetings with all chief ministers to make strategies to save people. Could you please say on how many occasions WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attended those meetings? During the second wave of Corona, we have seen the painful situation of oxygen scarcity in India. As per official information from GOI, we came to know that almost Rs. 200 crores were given to all states to make Oxygen producing plants in January. Unfortunately, WB made no such plants. The 7th Schedule of the Constitution of India speaks about three lists. Union list, state list, and concurrent list. There are 61 items currently on the state list. As per entry 6 of the state list public health sanitation hospitals and dispensaries are under state list. As per entry 1& 2 Public order and police is under state list. I am utterly surprised that how did you put the blame to the PM for monumental mismanagement in handling covid-19 situation in our state?

Not surprisingly you pointed out at a Hindu festival “Kumbh Mela” as the super spreader of the second wave. Although the arrangements were done when there was no lockdown or a raging wave of the covid. This is nothing but an example of selectively targeting one community by violating the Constitutional right of Freedom of Religion. We have seen that Kolkata police personnel were literally kicked out from certain areas when they went to implement lockdown during the first wave. Every Friday, minorities gather for their religious rituals. They have been performing their religious rituals regularly even amidst the lockdown yet predictably you fail to mention them. The Kumbh mela dissolved months before schedule as soon as the Prime Minister appealed to them while the first super spreader in India, the Tablighi Jamaat had refused to end their programme where the National Security Advisor had to intervene. In the ongoing farmer’s protest, a woman has died of the disease, Oxygen supplies delayed to Delhi and yet they are never criticized.

In the recent past we have seen horrible violence in West Bengal and nearly 140 workers of opposition parties in the state were brutally killed as per Media reports. In 2019, people in the state witnessed horrible riots in many places.  As a ruling party in the state, the TMC did not initiate any action against such violence. To ensure people’s safety and peaceful election, the Election Commission rightly decided to conduct election in 8phases. You mislead the audience by hiding this reality in your article. I truly believe the entire election campaign should have been done virtually to handle corona. As far as I know only the BJP party made such an appeal during the election in Bihar but unfortunately other parties denied that proposal. Could you please tell us if your party made any such appeal to the election commission? You also distorted the judgement of Madras High Court, no where in the judgement copy it was mentioned that Election Commission should be dragged to court for killing people by conducting vote.

You labelled the Prime Minister as misogynist and blamed him for a toxic sentence against our Chief Minister “Didi-O-Didi” which literally translates to “dear elder sister”. During the 2019 Lok Sabha election, PM also used this same word “Didi-O-Didi” and people of the state gave him 18 seats and you won 22 seats. During the recent state election campaign words used by our Chief Minister against the prime Minister were not only derogatory but also abusive. It is important to remember that it was Modi who sent liquid cash three times to all women’s “Jan Dhan” bank accounts during the pandemic and also it was Modi who made “triple talaq” illegal in India, a basic right of women to fight patriarchy.

Our state WB contributed around 40% in Indian GDP during the 1960s. At present it only contributes around 5%. Average income of the people of our state is almost 20% lower than the average income of the people in India. Over the last decade, our state government doubled the debt of the state without trying to set up infrastructure development for industrialization. The people of the state are literally in a survival mode rather than to think for a better lifestyle. So, after facing all this crisis people gave absolute mandate to your party because you offered free staff to them and unfortunately just after winning the election 12 people were murdered in the state, several women were abused, and thousands of people left their home due to post poll violence. All around the country people raised their concern and several appeals were filed to the Supreme Court for this. Though you and your party leaders tried to convince people by saying all those are fake news but your Chief Minister announced 2 lacs compensation for those who died in post poll violence.

Lastly you know Ms. Mahua Moitra, dictators always have one common identity, not to accept people’s mandate. Your party won this election in a huge way but your leader Mamata Banerjee lost in her constituency against BJP candidate Subhendu Adhikary and now  as per media she is moving to supreme court for recounting.  While she accepted the victory in all others, her own loss is hard to digest for her. My congratulations to Didi for taking the oath as first Chief Minister of the state who lost the election, but her party won. Such an incredible thing can only happen in democracy.

You have grown up in a rich family as reflected by your cultural values “Sanibare matinee robibare mangso”(enjoyment and party in the weekend). This is the reason why politicians who belong to your privileged class can not digest the journey of a Tea seller in railway platform to become the Prime Minister in India. Though the royal Nehru-Gandhi family raised the political slogan of eradicating poverty from the society but it was the tea seller Modi who opened bank account for all poor, gave all of the, LPG connection, brought all poor under nationwide Mediclaim scheme, made toilets in every households, successfully brought electrification in all villages. In addition he did not promote freebies rather created opportunities for middle class to become self reliant.

I am sure after this pandemic is over, people of the state will start asking their freebies to you and be prepared to fulfil their claims at that time. Remember from the huge mandate in 2006, it took just 5 years to topple popular communist government from our state. You know how to spread lies to win just one election to retain in power, but democracy knows how to reply back.

The night of broken glass: Religious fanaticism that costs lives in Israel and India

On the night of 9th November, 1938, the butchers of Nazi Germany laid siege to their own citizens belonging to the Jewish faith, in a pogrom whose unparalleled destruction saw it go down in history as Kristallnacht, or ‘the night of broken glass’.

It was a pogrom without parallel, both in the cruelty it unleashed and the devastation it caused. Over 7000 Jewish-owned businesses were destroyed. 267 synagogues were razed to the ground. The number of Jewish men who died, or simply disappeared, ran into hundreds.

An incident that sent shock waves around the world, it was a precursor to the Holocaust, the annihilation of 6 million Jews, soon to come. 83 years later, for the residents of Lod, a sleepy suburb near the Israeli capital Tel Aviv, the blood-thirsty cries of hate-filled Arab mobs rampaging through their neighbourhoods with Molotov cocktails brought the memories of ‘the night of broken glass’ rushing back.

“It’s another Kristallnacht,” they said. “Nothing short of war.” While few had experienced it themselves, all except the very young were familiar with what had unfolded, and the genocide that followed. As the attacks on their lives and properties began, the Jews drew on every ounce of resilience history had placed at their command, and began to mount a spirited defence.

As rockets continued to fall in Israel, with over 700 explosions in the last 24 hours sending ordinary Jews scrambling for cover, the usual charade gathered momentum across the world media, disseminating what they euphemistically call news. While the western media including the BBC and CNN made feeble attempts to mask their biased reportage, channels like Al Jazeera began to reveal their true selves –  unabashed mouthpieces for the proponents of Jihad.

Even as the terrorist Islamist group Hamas continued to launch its barrage of rockets indiscriminately into the homes of Israeli civilians, in the ‘civilized’ bastions of Europe and America, a massive cover-up operation had already begun.

Was the Israeli action disproportionate? Was Israel deliberately killing children? Was Israel a racist state? The knives were out to blunt the edge of Israel’s legitimate defence of its citizens. It was a cover-up that had always followed the same pattern. One that sought to undermine the tumultuous battle the people of Israel have been fighting from time immemorial, against the forces determined to obliterate them from the face of the earth. Be it the fascist Nazi regime of Hitler, which sent millions of helpless Jews to their graves.

Or be it the Islamists, today the biggest danger to the existence of Israel and the Jewish people, who had already made their intent clear with a wave of attacks on innocent Jews in the streets of Europe, and across the world. The marauding armies of Allah hated Jews with a passion. It was a visceral hatred ordained in their holy book, and propagated in the streets.

A hatred that knew no geographical boundaries, only exclusivist religious ones. In Lod, and in other Israeli cities under siege from its own neighbourhoods, many Jews attempted to escape the pogrom by taking down the sacred mezuzot that hung from their doors.

Thousands of miles away, in a sleepy suburb of Kolkata, capital of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, a similar action was destined to go unrewarded. Even as Madhabi Sarkar, the 62-year-old mother of Abhijit Sarkar, a member of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), rubbed the sacred Om from her door, she knew the writing was on the wall.

From the day her son Abhijit had decided to sign up for the Hindu Nationalist BJP, Madhabi’s heart had been heavy with fear. After all, she lived in a state in India whose ruler publicly pandered to Islamists, in exchange for the assurance of their votes which kept her in power.

Yet, the election results had just been declared. The Islamist-backing party had comprehensively won. Surely, the jihadists now had no reason to harm her son. Besides, as a glance outside her tiny window revealed, there was the police patrolling right outside, in the lane that led to her home.

It was only many hours later, long after her sons Abhijit and Biswajit had returned home, that she heard the muffled cries approaching, even as she cast nervous glances at her boys, blissfully curled up with the innocence of sleep. Rushing to the window, she tried to draw the flimsy petticoat she used as a curtain, as if to keep the evil eye away from her home.

It was not to be.

Even as the door was smashed open with lathis and sickles, Madhabi threw herself on the floor and tried to stop the onward march of doom. “Amaar chele aar BJP korbe na,” she begged. “Oke chere dao.” My son will never work for the BJP again. Please let him go. As a response, a short skinny man with a skull cap and a beard screamed from somewhere behind. “Oi khankir chele ta kothaye. Oke bar koro.” Where is that son-of-a-whore. Send him to us.

That was the last sound Madhabi heard, before she felt a lathi smash against her skull. Even as she fell, she could sense the mob rampage through her tiny one-room house, smashing everything in its path. Luckily for her, Madhabi lost consciousness, a few minutes before her son Abhijit lost his life. She was to learn later that his head had been smashed in by lathis, and just to make sure, a sickle had slit open his throat. She also learnt that her attackers had not been identified, yet. The police, who she had spotted just that evening patrolling her lane, were simply not interested.

Over 20 mothers across the state of West Bengal, a state which had been carved out of Muslim-majority East Bengal as a homeland for the Hindus, lost their sons in the orgy of violence unleashed by Jihadists, as the party they supported returned to power.

It was Kristallnacht playing out all over again. Except, here there was no Benjamin Netanhayu standing with his people, declaring a ‘state of emergency’, and vowing to do everything in his capacity to deliver justice to his citizens. There was the Chief Minister of Bengal who, in the face of incontrovertible evidence to the contrary, mocked the deaths as a figment of the BJP party’s imagination.

Most tragically of all, there was the ruling party of India who, in the face of the systematic slaughter of those Hindus of Bengal who supported them against terrifying odds, did not so much as lift a finger. If you don’t learn the lessons of history, they say, it will repeat itself. Israel, and its people, have learnt the hard way.

India, condemned to politicians who are either sleeping with the enemy, or tragically incapacitated by its machinations, remains oblivious to the lessons of history and as a consequence, the fate of its citizens.

Israel, we’ve let you down, again!

In the heart of the Middle East, on the shores of the Mediterranean bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria and Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the south, lies the tiny nation of Israel, covering an area of just 8522 square miles.

Even as I write this piece, the Hamas terrorist group continues its murderous attacks on its citizens, in a brazen attempt to obliterate it from the earth. The intention, clearly, is to grind the only Jewish homeland in the world to dust.

Over 3000 rockets have already been indiscriminately fired into Israeli civilian homes, in the capital Tel Aviv and other residential areas nearby. It’s an action that can only be described as a co-ordinated attempt at genocide, unprecedented in scale.

An 85-year-old woman and a 6-year-old boy, unable to make it to the nearby bomb shelter on time, just two of the many innocents that have already fallen.

These rockets are fired according to a plan, hidden to none. It’s a decades-old strategy employed by Islamist terrorist groups like the Iran-backed Islamic Jihad and Hamas, to use civilians as cannon fodder for their political ends.

The strategy has even been documented in a Hamas manual, recovered from the rubble of a Hamas hideout during the 2014 Gaza war. With two distinct pillars, the strategy is as cunning as it is cruel. One, embed rockets and other artillery in heavily populated civilian areas, to ensure widespread death and destruction – among Palestinians – when the inevitable retaliation occurs.

Two, in collusion with a pliant international media, use images of the above to spread propaganda and lies to weaken the Jewish resistance. The ultimate goal – to sway world opinion against Israel’s defence of its citizens, and as always, fuel Muslim anger on the street.

Anybody who asks the obvious question – why does Hamas fire its rockets from civilian areas, instead of a separate military zone – is quickly labelled a Zionist sympathizer, or to spread the net wider, an Islamophobe.

It’s a strategy that plays out in other jihadi playbooks across the world, like closer home in Kashmir. The media is already inundated with tragic images of death and devastation, with little children being rushed to hospital by shrieking mobs being particularly common.

A tragic reminder of the success of Hamas’ strategy, for any sane observer they are the reason why the violence absolutely must be stopped. But Hamas, its Islamist backers, the Palestinian public and their cheerleaders in the international media remain in denial. Yet, deadly Hamas rockets are just one front Israel’s forces have to focus on. From the opposite end of the nation’s borders, a new front threatens to boil over.

In the border towns of West Bank, governed by the Palestinian Authority, Hamas’ strategy has already begun to work. The crazed young men pelting stones and Molotov cocktails at the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) with naked hatred in their eyes, only a portent of things to come.

Even as Israel unites and comes to grips with the impending danger unfolding across the country, in a few select towns and cities in the promised homeland of the Jews, a new threat has already reared its ugly head. Israeli Arabs, a community that enjoys all the freedoms that Israeli society offers, including positions of high office and representation in the Knesset, have taken to arms.

At a time when the idea of Israel itself is under unprecedented attack, it’s telling that the Israeli Arabs choose to allow their religious identity to override their national one. The Al Aqsa mosque violence being just the ruse they needed to set upon their Jewish neighbours, if they even needed one. The mayor of Lod, which faced wave after wave of Israeli Arab violence, has called it another Kristallnacht – the pogrom that started the Nazi holocaust. With these actions the Israeli Arabs shattered the myth, perhaps irrevocably, that they considered themselves Israeli at all.

Israel, a tiny nation surrounded by antagonistic states on all sides, has so far done a remarkable job of keeping its citizens safe. Citizens who, after facing persecution from time immemorial, have finally found a safe haven in the only Jewish nation state in the world. Israel, in many ways, is the bulwark of democracy in a part of the world that has scant respect for it.

It is a beacon of light, in an area where strife is a norm, and violence a way of life. Just as Israel cannot change its neighbours, only ward off terrorist attacks from their shores, closer home in India, neither can we. Just as Israel is a bulwark against the rapid spread of Islamist fanaticism in the Levant, in the dusty plains of South East Asia, so are we.

Israel has always extended a hand of friendship to India, coming to our aid over and over again, often when nobody else would. India has seldom returned the favour. In 1949, India voted against UN membership of Israel, preferring to cosy up to its Arab enemies instead.

In the rush for Arab oil, the only democracy in the Middle East has been repeatedly ignored by the most populous democracy in the world. Despite this, Israel’s support to India has seldom wavered.

In the Sino-India War of 1962, when Nehru was shaken out of his reverie by the Chinese betrayal, it was Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion who supplied India with desperately needed arms and ammunition.

In 1965 again, the Israeli M-58 160-mm mortar ammunition helped our forces keep the Pakistani army at bay. In 1998, despite India’s consistent support to the Palestinians, Israel was one of the few countries that did not condemn India’s nuclear tests, in Pokhran. Despite the US sanctions and international isolation that followed, Israel was one of the only countries that continued to give us much-needed arms.

In the Kargil war of 1999, the Indian Air Force used the Israeli supplied Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) ‘Searcher’ and surveillance systems for our Jaguar and Mirage squadrons with telling effect. In addition, Israel quickly upgraded the IAFs MiG-21 combat aircraft, and supplied the Indian Army 160-mm mortar ammunition and deadly Laser Guided Bombs (LGB).

Israeli arms continue to add teeth to India’s defence against its hostile neighbours. Their state-of-the-art missile defence systems helped keep Pakistan in check after the Balakot air strikes.

In return, Mr. Prime Minister, what have we given Israel in return?

It was only as recent as 2017, no less than 69 years after the birth of the Jewish state, that an Indian Prime Minister even made a stand-alone official visit to Israel.

That Prime Minister, Mr. Modi, was you.

By doing so, you communicated to the millions of Indians who had voted for you, that you had the courage of conviction to put the nation’s interests above the appeasement of those whose loyalties were divided. That you were ready to shed the chicanery that earlier political leaders had adopted while dealing with Israel, ignoring the groundswell of support for the Jewish state from the nationalistic Indian street.

Yet, the position India adopted at the UNSC meeting yesterday was disappointing, to say the least. Glossing over the continuing murderous attacks on Jewish civilians, your statement placed the blame on ‘both sides’. In doing so, you followed the same script as the leaders who have consistently let us down.

Leaders who, for this very reason, have been consigned to the dustbins of history, forever. Mr. Modi, time is running out to become the leader we know you are. As a country which has lost tens of thousands to terrorism, you need to stand by those who today face its deadly brunt. If you don’t, the nation and your loyal supporters will soon lose hope. Make no mistake about it.

If Israel falls, we fall. Because our dreams are similar, our challenges are the same. Israel has a brutal terror state next door – Hamas, in Gaza. India has a brutal terror state next door – Pakistan. Just as Israel suffers murderous attacks, and the retaliation is branded by the motivated media as ‘disproportionate’, India suffers terrorist attacks, and the retaliation, if ever, is similarly castigated and condemned.

Our enemies may be separated by geography, but are united by intolerance and faith. Efforts are being intensified, even as I write this, to frame a narrative that paints Israel as the aggressor, even as rockets continue to pound its people.

Mr. Modi, today our brothers and sisters in Israel face a civilizational threat like they never have before. With the entire Islamic world baying for their blood, the threat is existential, and very, very real. It’s a place we’ve been to as a nation, many times before.

The age-old Indic civilization, to which we belong, and this nation, which you command, is looking at you to shed your reticence, and give voice to the groundswell of support welling in our hearts. The time has come for India to stand shoulder to shoulder with Israel. Because if we don’t, then after the dust has settled on this tragedy, history will ask questions of us as a nation, and of you as a leader.

Where were you when our friends needed us? Did you fulfill your dharma, or did you also stay quiet? It’s time for India to stand up and be counted. If not now when Israel’s under attack, then when?

If not you Mr. Modi, then who?
