Attacks on Doctors

We have failed as citizens. We have forgotten ethics. We’re breaking over those who are trying hard to save our lives in this pandemic.

थूक मत जाहिल, अरे तू थूक मत जाहिल।

Medicos are blessed with tremendous fortitude which strengthens with every patient they handle. It is disheartening to know that India’s expenditure on empowering these brave souls stands at just 1.28% of the GDP.

The Government of India should immediately promulgate an ordinance/ order regarding the safety of Doctors and other Officials who are working day and night for our lives and future of the Country at this time and the same should be given wide publicity.

The situation that the doctors find themselves in now, is comparable to the situation Dalits found themselves in Gujarat in the 2002 riots. Fanatic Muslims attacked Dalits (even AFTER Godhra), and since this fact did not fit in the media narrative of 'Muslims being massacred in Gujarat', these attacks were almost completely ignored by the mainstream media.

Both the issues of the violence against doctors and the poor management of the recent encephalitis outbreak are manifestations of the same deeply rooted systemic disease, i.e., the failure of our public health system.

Unfortunately, doctors are not a vote bank. They are perceived to have all made a fortune fleecing poor patients, and therefore beating them up somehow appears to be justice served.

When a doctor is attacked, its an attack on humanity.

Are doctors not human-beings? Don't they have their limitations?

Does a Doctor need to risk his own life, that too for the very person whose life is being saved? With rising Hospital Violence, is not the Military a better place for the ultimate sacrifice?
