“Our Election analysis is much like our Economic analysis”: Echonomic Times after Akhilesh’s debacle

0

Lucknow: The makeshift office of Echonomic Times is slowly being dismantled in the heart of the city. The three cheerleaders of Samajwadi Party and part-time Echonomic Times reporters- Varadha, Mohini and Manav, were stuck in nostalgia thinking of their happy days in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Wiping the tears lingering over her eye corner, Varadha said, “It has been an excellent coverage of events for the past few months. I lost track of days ever since I was given the assignment of covering Samajwadi party.. oops… UP elections. UP has become my second home. Now, when I’m told to leave the state, I feel so heavy. Can’t we have a re-election in Uttar Pradesh soon?”

Spot the economic related news in Echonomic times

Consoling Varadha, the lead of the cheerleading gang, Mohini appeared shaken but not stirred, “Samajwadi Party has a global presence. If Akhilesh Yadav can make Lucknow a New York, next he can go to France and make Paris a Lucknow. We have to get rid of the saffron wave in France and only an alliance between SP-BSP-Congress can wipe out the communal right wing there. I heard that Hollande had provided free land for Burnet Coldman University there.”

Manav who was listening to both approached us with a surprised tone. “If SP is going to contest in French elections,” he started, “does it mean we are going to have our next assignment in Paris? Yippie!”, for which Varadha replied, “I too heard that French people has a nose for everything and so they would elect a more prominent nose.”

While this was all happening in the foreground, the manager of the team had already removed the entire office in the background. Speaking to us, the manager of the cheerleading leader said, “Chalo! Crap happens. We thought it might be an SP sweep, but now it is an SP weep. How can we go and face Akhilesh ji now? So, here we are packing our stuff back to Delhi. By the way, our Election analysis is much like our Economic analysis.”

Please stop killing sports in educational institutions

0

Please stop killing sports in Educational Institutions. Ever wondered why India is so poor at Olympics medal table? No sorry. We Indians don’t. Yes it’s the reality. There are several misconceptions such as sports make you weaker in studies and sports make you illiterate. These things are prevailing in the society because of the negligence of Government towards the development of sports at root level. There are very saddening things for players and their future if this situation prevails.

Why do I care?

I belong to a backward area of Gadchiroli which is Naxal-hit. Even though sports is not a priority here still the Gadchiroli District Boxing Association is trying hard to teach the values of sportsmanship and self-defense. I an one of them. We have foamless or expired equipments, broken gym as well as ring etc and many more devastating things. But foremost we have players that represent Maharashtra state at national level and All India Inter-University Boxing Championships.

Here are few lines from an article: “Why India fails at Olympics? Chinese media thinks it has the answer”:

“India has 1,200,000,000 people, and is the second populous country following China. But India is getting scarce medals in the Olympic Games. Why? Counting by population, India ranks the last in Olympic medal number, India got only six medals in the 2012 Olympics, while none were gold,” said an article on the website Toutiao.com.

“Counting the recent three (2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing, 2012 London) Olympics, if the medals were given equally to the whole population, India ranks last.”

It added: “Large gap between rich and poor has made it hard for the poor people even to make a living, let along saving the energy for sports practice. Adding that the government has only little investment on the sports infrastructure, the mass sports and competitive sports are both lagging behind in India.”

The lack of a sports culture in India has contributed to the lack of Olympic success, according to a piece on the website Chinanews.com.

“The Indian culture has hindered local sports development. Most families want their children to become doctors or accountants. Sports talents would be persuaded by family and even neighbours, stopping them from taking part in high-level competitions,” the article said.

“Besides, a large portion of the population is from lower castes and such people hardly get chance for education and suffer from lack of sufficient nutrition.”

Information about the Olympics in rural areas of India is key to success at the event, wrote the official website ChinaPolitics.org.

“Researchers have investigated in rural areas in Karnataka and Rajasthan. They asked villagers about the best job they ever heard of in the past decade. In Rajasthan, the answer of more than 300 villagers showed software engineer, architecture engineer, doctor, lawyer and in some villages teachers or soldiers. There was not much difference in Karnataka, which had a better economy,” the website said.

There was no mention of sports, forget Olympics.

And, then cricket.

“Cricket is the national sport of India. Indians love it so much that it has been religion-like. In India, those who don’t like cricket could be regarded as pagan. Because of this, many young people don’t have the courage to receive other sports training. Indians love cricket and are proficient at it, but sadly, cricket is not among the Olympic events, Indians can’t win a gold medal with it,” was Toutiao.com’s succinct explanation.

The reasons behind China’s success at the Olympics: The commentaries did not specify but possibly the reasons are the exact opposite of why India fails.

Now what I think will improve the situation is the following:

  • Promote sports at rural level.
  • Create sports arena at taluka level.
  • Make sports ground mandatory for all educational institutions.
  • Create a District stadium at all the districts in India.
  • Give appropriate opportunities to sports persons in Government Jobs.
  • Make sports a compulsory curriculum till Matriculation.
  • No sports or physical education related degree should be awarded without the participation of student in some kind of sports activities.
  • Allot coaches to every Public and Government Universities. And make it mandatory for Universities to send a coach(or Experienced Player) of respective sport to Inter University competitions with their team.
  • Make some special arrangements to connect Adivasi regions to Sporting arenas.
  • Start Vyayam shala(Exercise School) or sports practice at villages for DESI GAMES(Kabaddi & Kho-Kho).

Future of NDA after Punjab and UP elections in general and Nitish Kumar in particular

0

The recently held state assembly elections especially of UP, Punjab and Manipur and also the local Civic body elections in Maharashtra and Orissa show a very interesting picture.

The results of the Civic body elections are out and BJP has won handsomely in both Maharashtra n Orissa. Whereas the actual results of 5 state assembly will be officially be known on 11th March, but then various exit polls show a ‘Lotus’ bloom in 4/5 states barring Punjab. Now till date hundreds and thousands of articles have been written with respect to when, what, why and how of this results and many more are in the pipelines.

There have been also numerous attempts done by the MSM (so-called neutral, secular and liberal flag bearers of our society by their own admission) to make every election as a litmus test for Modi n a coming of age of RaGa. And on every occasion [barring Bihar 2015] they have fallen flat on their faces. Anyway, this article is not about the life and times of MSM in India [will require a whole novel to be written, that to in multiple volumes]. This article is to look into the future of NDA.

One thing these elections have firmly established is the popularity of PM Modi. He is at present the tallest leader of India and no one comes even near to him regarding pan Indian acceptance. If Manipur tomorrow gives BJP majority, and IF and this is a big IF BJP crosses 202 mark in UP, which at this moment it seems to be getting quite comfortably, there will be virtually no opposition left for Modi in 2019.

And here comes Nitish Kumar in picture. Nitish separated from NDA in run up to 2014 because of his opposition to Modi, and his own ambition of becoming PM if there were to be a hung verdict in 2014. He later joined hands with Lalu [convicted for corruption] in 2015, to defeat BJP in Bihar. But with the kind of picture emerging from across the country right from Maharashtra to Assam and Manipur, Uttarakhand and UP to Orissa is the popularity of Modi increasing leaps and bounds and which is helping BJP gaining momentum like never before.

This combined with the uneasy Alliance JDU has with RJD and talks of Lalu running Bihar through his sons, Nitish Kumar may feel more comfortable with NDA than with Maha-Gathbandhan. It is very clear that even if Nitish Kumar is thinking of becoming PM in 2019, it’s just impossible for him to match the Charisma of Modi across India. Also Congress won’t make him the leader of UPA over and above RaGa, and the third front is just not going to work because there won’t anyone left. Jayalalitha is no more and the Dravidian parties at present are just not up for the task. Naveen Patnaik has already ceded ground to BJP and the national party is going to keep expanding. BSP was routed to zero in 2014 and even in 2017 it’s coming a distant 3rd according to exit polls. With BJP entering into new territories of North East; it will take tremendous efforts from the opposition to beat Modi in 2019.

At present Nitish Kumar has 2 options in front of him. He can either choose to be a part of the Maha-Gathbandhan and be the chief minister of Bihar where he is partially, if not completely, controlled by Lalu and Tejaswi Yadav, and dream of becoming the PM some day [however farfetched that may be], or he can come back to NDA and become the CM of Bihar with full powers[realizing that he does not have a realistic chance of winning against Modi].

They say 1 in hand is better than 2 in the bush, let’s see how Nitish Kumar thinks.

What Karnataka and Tamil Nadu should learn from Israel about water issue

0

People who have grown up in cities like Bangalore, Mysore, Mandya and surrounding towns have always been subjected to the Cauvery water dispute. What I have seen from my college days is that this problem starts whenever there is less rain and scarcity of water in KRS dam. And political parties in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu start their political games and people eventually  suffer.

What I haven’t seen in this entire episode is that no politician from both the states have taken any responsibility towards this matter and have tried to come up with  a solution to this issue or at the least come up with a plan in the interest of farmers and city dwellers depending on drinking water. Burning bus, Padayatra (walking) and declaring Bandhs will neither solve this issue nor any dispute for that matter.

We need to focus on the water problem with high importance and come up with different plans, based on  the annual rainfall. We cannot have one straight forward solution for Cauvery issue.

Most of the countries in the world are facing similar water issues, but Israel stands best in their solution for water conservation, proper usage and sharing of water. I know it is not easy to implement policies in our country as it is in developed nations. However, the scenario is changing fast in India, where people are preferring solutions over Bandhs and burning bus which shows that people are changing faster compared to political parties. It is high time for political parties to change their leadership and bring in people who want to work for the betterment of the society. As quoted in some book, political parties still feel “Water problems are a proxy for bad governance, and there is lots of bad governance”.

Let us look at some of  the major reasons for water issues in general.

Population:
Population of Bangalore has been increased from around 4 lakhs in 1941 to around 84 lakhs in 2011. Water consumption has also increased in the same format. But BWSSB couldn’t gear up to provide water from Cauvery and 3 lakhs bore wells have been dug in Bangalore and nothing much has been done to conserve underwater. Lakes are encroached and many do not exist today.

Rising middle class:
Rise in the middle class in Bangalore, which is mainly from IT industry has increased water consumption. Big companies and malls have dug up lots of bore wells and people are not so sensitive in their water usage. Washing cars/vehicles, Air conditioners and usage without any limit has increased the water consumption in the city. People want water by paying more, but no one wants to seriously think of a solution.

Climate Change:
The deforestation in Coorg and the development activities which supported cutting trees in Bangalore have also contributed to the climate change. Change in the pattern of rain is also one of the major problems. In November 2015, we witnessed 15 days of continuous rain in Bangalore due to heavy rainfall in Chennai. There was not a single sunny day for continuous 15 days. This helped in filling the lakes, but since majority of lakes do not exist now, this becomes one of the main reasons for decrease in the underwater level. No major rain in the catchment will reduce the water storage in Dams. Deforestation in Coorg should be addressed and reforestation should be promoted in such places.

Pollution:
Water pollution is also reducing the amount of usable water for human beings. Bangalore had lots of lakes once upon a time, which made the city livable, but now most of them do not exist. Growing food for the increased population and animals require larger amounts of fertilizers and pesticides, some portion of which will be carried to water resources through the rain. All the chemicals used on soil will make its way to these water sources ending up polluting them.

Water Leakage:
This is one of the major problems which I have noticed in Bangalore. There are lots of places where lakhs of litres of drinking water is wasted every day from the water wall, Leakages in water pipe etc. Many people at home have water taps with leakages but do not bother to fix. There are many public taps where water is wasted or stolen regularly. 30% of water leakage is seen in London city and 25% in Chicago. I feel that Bangalore city might be facing up to 60% of water leakage.

The country which has minimum wastage of water is Israel. It did not achieve this in one month or so. It took decades to achieve this. Nir Barlev who was once the head of the Ra’anana Water Corporation (municipal water utility) says “The world’s water crisis can only be solved with smarter use of the water we have”. One major innovation adopted by Barlev during his tenure is Distant Meter Reading (DMR) technology. He describes it as a cell phone married to your home’s water meter that makes a call every four hours to report on your water usage.

Many people will not reinvent their interests when they are 59 years of age. Only very few will take their second job as seriously as their first, like Israel’s “Water Man”, Simcha Blass. When he was about to retire from his job, Blass returned to the idea which had flashed him 25 years ago. When Blass was visiting a farm to supervise the drilling, he saw a row of trees planted along a fence, one tree was taller than all others. He thought that all the trees were of the same species and planted at the same time with same soil, rainfall and climate. He was curious to know why just one tree was growing so robustly. Inspecting around the tree, Blass found a leak in a metal irrigation pipe near the base. He suspected that these small but continuous drops of water were going to the tree’s roots. He thought that these droplets were the cause for the growth of the tree. He moved on in his life and later when he turned 59, he started thinking and came up with the drip irrigation system, the best methodology till date to save water.

There was a major discovery by Blass of Drip irrigation. It saves fifty to sixty percent of water used in irrigation.
The productivity of the crops watered with drip irrigation was higher.

These revolutionized the irrigation system in Israel and around the world.  Recently I read a report where Paddy was grown using drip irrigation in Rajasthan. We have a huge potential in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to adopt drip irrigation and move away from the traditional system and save 60% of water. Government and leaders should give this a serious thought and the people too should adopt this. This solution would be the first step to minimize the water problem in Cauvery basin for now. As the saying goes, ‘the Society always remembers the culprit and forgets the crime’ is relevant to this issue and we should stop focusing on the people creating this issue and heed to the actual problem (water issue), which will help us in solving issues sooner.

JNU prof who wants kids shut out of campus complains of rising “anti-intellectualism”

The Indian Express has recently become the go to destination for every intellectual hypocrite who finds him/herself unable to cope with the fact that a man from a humble background made it to the top. And that he and his followers (at least his online followers) generally cock a snook at the class of self-styled intellectuals who have been fattened on the loaves and fishes of power by successive secular regimes.

The latest to join the whining party is Prof. Janaki Nair of the history department at JNU (no points for guessing that).

Untitled

In her rage, Prof. Nair goes on to excoriate the current Indian society and our government for harbouring mistrust towards the “intellectuals”.

Untitled

Incidentally, Prof. Nair herself wrote an article some months ago in Scroll demanding that eager school kids not be allowed into her delicate ivory tower at JNU. Here’s an extract :

Untitled

Yes, allowing eager school kids to come into her campus with their fresh young minds has degraded her to the status of an animal. In a country where literally tens of millions of kids never get a shot at a quality education, it can be a “vice” for an elite, well funded university in the capital to let children in for just ONE day during the whole year! It takes a special kind of hypocrite to demand a wall for keeping kids out of the campus intellectual space and then to complain that people have become “anti-intellectual”.

What are the people supposed to do, Prof. Nair? Sing praises of JNU intellectuals while standing at a respectable distance looking at your campus wall? If the common people or even their kids come any closer and you have to set your eyes on them, it will make you feel like a lowly animal.

To echo the words of Prof. Janaki Nair, what kind of “nervous and insecure”  intellectual gets so panicked by the presence of school kids?

Narendra Modi began his life as a tea seller on a railway platform. He worked his way up to become Chief Minister of Gujarat and delivered economic growth for 12 long years. But he is not fit to be PM.  But, guess who got a recommendation from a faculty at Harvard to become PM?

Untitled

Yes, Rahul Gandhi is impressive and talented and selflessly committed to the welfare of the Indian people. How does Amartya Sen know all this? Because he met Rahul Gandhi for a day at Trinity College in Cambridge.

Let’s put it all together. Kids of ordinary people are not to be let into campus even for one day because they might bother the delicate genius of intellectuals. But the son of Rajiv and Sonia gets to personally meet a Harvard intellectual and in the space of just one day… he comes back with a letter of recommendation to become Prime Minister of India! Eh, Prof. Nair?

And who can forget how Modi was derided for his humble beginning as a Chaiwallah by an intellectual who went to Wellham Boys’, Doon School, St. Stephens and Trinity College, Cambridge? Can you really complain now about Modi not being a fan of the intellectual class that has sneered at his humble background every step of the way?

The “nervous and insecure” Prof. Janaki Nair doesn’t stop here. The JNU prof moves into really dangerous territory, starting a bout of fearmongering about science and technology!

Untitled

And they talk of freedom on campus! What kind of nervous and insecure intellectual sees the presence of scientists and technologists as a threat to an educational institution? So far, this eminent intellectual has essentially declared school kids, scientists and technologists as undesirables on campus! The upside down world of what happens inside the walls of JNU finally has an explanation.

Now, if I were an intellectual, I would go on to write a long article about how distrust of scientists has a dangerous and frankly embarrassing history, from Galileo to Darwin and much more.

My advice to twitter users

0

After what’s being said and reiterated in the recent DU case, that also went on to involve a young girl, one can easily make some observations. We can see how the goalposts shift during the course of debate and discussion, how people who are under fire manage to get away by pointing out the abuses hurled towards them from those who disagree with them. These people with ‘blue ticks’ are clever enough to only reply to tweets that contain abuses and curses and this is how the whole issue gets diluted and the focus shifts to civility of the debate. Do we really want that to happen?

I am an ardent supporter of the present government, its policies and actions but I refrain from using words like ‘anti-national’, ‘presstitutes’ and ‘AAPtards’. This is because I believe that name-calling serves no purpose. On the other hand, I also think that calling every Modi/Government supporter a ‘Bhakt’ or ‘Sanghi’ is just foolish.

In the recent instance, the message laid out in an old video featuring a young girl, daughter of a martyr, has become a moot point. Many of her supporters say that she used ‘Pakistan’ figuratively in her message but still I would never agree to accept anything that absolves Pakistan of the crimes it has been committing against our nation through proxy wars and terrorism. But then this is my opinion which is not in line with hers and I want to put it in a civil manner so that it can be taken as a point and not blown off as an abuse. This girl has been receiving all kinds of abuses including some rape threats after her old video came up.

Now what has this done? This has put into question the stand of all the people who displayed their disagreement with the girl’s message in the video. Some of these people also include our beloved sports stars and Bollywood personalities. Their tweets have been intentionally misinterpreted just because they voiced their opposition to her message in that video. However, all of these stars have condemned the rape threats against the girl in every public interaction that followed.

Now we can clearly see how the focus which was initially concentrated on the sloganeering in these universities shifted to that girl and her video and finally landed on the civility of twitter debates and has remained there ever since. The parties and the people we voice our opinion against get away by using the ‘obvious’ even without inquiring into these matters. They get another chance to blame the organization and the cause we support. When are we going to learn to stop making issues out of nothing and heroes out of nobody?

Every well-framed opinion gets vilified by the media just because of a few abusive comments elsewhere. And we don’t even know if people who post such vile things actually support our cause. In my opinion, they don’t. Conspiracy theories would also suggest that people from the opposition camp, working against us, can be behind such twitter abuses as they don’t want a debate based on facts and this provides them an escape route. So I would advise the people opposing the view of that girl to keep the debate civil and deplore the use of swearwords against her. Twitter is for opinions and counters, we should let it be that way. Opine with definite viewpoints, not with profanity. Petty-minded bigots should be beaten, but with factual arguments. Filth can never do what a sharp well founded critique does.

कार्यक्रम का नाम रखा गया था, “POETERY READING- A COUNTRY WITHOUT A POST OFFICE”.

The rise of the guns: Defence should be the backbone of the Make in India campaign

0

One of India’s most ambitious undertakings ‘The Make in India’ Campaign seems to be hitting it off big time for the defense sector which had been lying dormant due to decades of red tape and lack of innovation.

It’s only recently that India has managed to give wings to the Tejas, the indigenously developed light combat aircraft and is almost in the process of inducting the nation’s first light combat helicopter, which has a huge shot in the arm for the defense forces lacking the resources to fight a two-pronged threat involving China and Pakistan.

It’s a known fact that India’s war time and defence strategy had always been designed keeping China in mind ever since the war back in 1962 ended in a Chinese victory. It was this war that forced India to rapidly change its policy towards dealing with a bigger and much powerful nation—economically, militarily or otherwise.

Moreover, with a hostile nation towards the west, namely Pakistan, with whom India has been into war multiple times; the Army, Navy and the Airforce have been demanding more resources to tackle this dual threat, should the need arise.

That’s where the ‘Make in India’ Campaign comes into the picture, which has the potential to alleviate India’s need to constantly shop for guns and munitions by cutting deals with various nations across the world. Currently, it takes a lot of time to finalize a deal, and even then, the delivery of weapon systems can take years, which puts the armed forces in a limbo as we are continually dependent on other nations for our defence requirements.

Moreover, this puts India at a strategic disadvantage, because in the absence of a technology transfer agreement (Which the exporting nation might or might not agree upon) should there ever be a change of stance in regards to the foreign policies of an exporting country; the armed forces would be left with no viable option for the upkeep of the weapons systems or an emergency supply of munitions in the unfortunate event of a conflict.

For example, India has been purchasing weapons from both the US and Russia and has so far been able to play the balancing act with finesse; however, hypothetically, if another cold war between these two nations were to take place; India would end up in a precarious situation, as India’s stance of non-alignment leaves no room for taking sides.

India of today needs to open up her doors to the private sector and infuse fresh blood into an industry plagued by decades of bureaucracy and red tape. Fortunately, the current government understands the gravity of the situation and has worked hard to woo the likes of Lockheed Martin (USA), Dassault Aviation SA (France), Raytheon (USA), Israel Aerospace Industries (Israel) among others, who all have shown an interest in investing in the country, this will not only give a boost to the defesce sector; it will also open up employment opportunities.

Moreover, it also has the potential to recall the highly skilled talent that had left India in search of greener pastures, specifically the west.

Top Defense Budgets in the World

India is the 4th largest defence spender in the world and has the dubious tag of being the world’s biggest importer of arms and ammunition. In a country of 1.25 billion people, it’s highly unlikely that we lack the talent and appetite for innovation. Surely, the only thing holding us back is a lack of opportunity to explore and innovate.

The situation could change once some of the world’s biggest and most competitive companies enter the fray, as that would mean more competition; thereby, giving a boost to the hunger to continuously innovate.

Already, we are spending billions of dollars in purchasing and leasing weapons, some of which have ended up in sheer wastage of the taxpayers’ money like in the case of the INS Vikramaditya, the cost of which inflated so much by the time we got delivery of the platform; we could have easily purchased a new aircraft carrier for a lesser sum.

India needs to offset the cost somehow; even though being able to defend ourselves from external aggression is paramount, and there’s no room for compromise; the amount that we spend on our imports is too much for a country which is still reeling under poverty, hunger, malnutrition, lack of health facilities and education. Manufacturing in our nation will help us cut down on the cost, leaving us with more money to be spent on social welfare schemes to help the downtrodden.

Some may criticize the Make in India initiative for reasons best known to them; however, the truth is that it is a noble scheme whose effects would be visible on the ground in the years to come if driven in the right direction, and starting with making India capable of standing on her own two feet without being dependent on a foreign nation for defense requirements surely seems like a good starting point.

Isn’t it time, we go from being the largest arms importer in the world to being one of the biggest arms exporters? It might sound too farfetched at the moment; however, looking back at our history of being one of the most impoverished countries in the world to becoming one of the fastest growing economic and military power, we might just pull this off!
