Movie makers can’t run away from moral obligation in name of creative liberty

0

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the director of the controversial movie ‘Padmavati’ would have made a wonderful fantasy movie like Bahubali or Avtar from the substance of the Padmavati story as provided by Jayasi. The story is full of flight and romancing elements for a grandeur crafting.

James Cameron or Christopher Nolan would have done justice to this fantasy without offending the character of Rani Padmini but Bhansali appears to have crafted the narration in a manner eulogising the actors and actresses more than the personas behind these actors. Yesteryear’s Shakti Kapoor would have done justice to the Khilji role rather than the naive Ranveer, who appears to have portrayed the evil Khilji like a friendly boy next door.

The toxic Leftist ideologues in Bollywood and the leftist media had reckoned an impact on the script, particularly in respect of the role of Alauddin Khilji. As we are all aware, Leftists will be deeply eager to see even the renowned barbaric Muslim characters are NOT portrayed openly in a bad light, be it Allauddin Khilji Aurangzeb or Tipu Sultan. However, they are willing to mime even chaste Hindu characters for the sake of ‘secularism’.

Bhansali ran into controversy during the making of Bajirao Mastani also. I feel he was not properly reprimanded. The outcome is Padmavati to day. When liberals cite Amir Khusrow s historical work as proof enough that Padmini was nowhere mentioned, but the same Khusrow categorically cited Khilji butchering 30,000 Hindus in the streets of Rajastan.

But renowned historian Kishori Saran Lal concludes in his research work, that ‘the only historical facts in the legend (Padmavat the epic Poem by Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasee) is that Alauddin capturing Chittor, and that the women of the fort (including a queen of Ratna Simha) self-immolating in ‘Jauhar’. Hence the historicity of Padmavati is beyond any argument.

Cinema is a powerful visual media. Through Cinema a message can be sent to even illiterate viewers. If that message is ill-conceived, with an agenda in mind, the result will be ruinous. So then it would be state’s onus to screen the hidden message in the film.

So a high sanctimonious obligation is cast on the makers, particularly when the story is based on some historical or religious facts. Even when some facts hitherto strongly believed to be with ‘historicity’, if proved to be a pure ‘fiction’ on a later day, the strong belief of the fact which has been deeply ingrained in peoples hearts over centuries cannot be taken for a ride under the pretext of artistic freedom or FOE or the likes. Generally, films are made with a profit motive. Rarely movies are made, spending huge money, in anticipation of a box office flop.

When such a ‘belief’ is passed on to generation as a historical fact then that belief has to be respected. A Bansali is not a Historian of repute to have his own ‘views’ so as to make a film disregarding the well-settled Historians views.

Jesus Christ is not a historical figure and as on date, no evidence of Christ existence has been officially recorded. Yet while a movie on Christe is made, the protagonist character cannot be taken in a lighter vein for that same pretext that Jesus Christ was not recognised as a historical figure. In the case of Padmini, she has been worshipped on par with Hindu Goddesses solely for the reason of her supreme sacrifice in protecting her chastity. Over 600 yrs, Rani Padmini has been passed on to the generations down as a persona worth worshipping a la a Goddesses. After 600 yrs a perpetual belief cannot be questioned or impugned or used as a material for a commercial gain of a few manufacturers called filmmakers.

Films are expected to educate the gullible masses, or the least to entertain but not to confuse them, sending them home with shattered beliefs, that were hitherto believed as ‘esteemed’ ones. If the filmmakers turn audacious, biased, egocentric, and daring the public then they are punishable by law and if the law itself confused and hapless at sometimes, then the public will acquire a moral right to boycott the film without any regards to FOE or Artistic freedom or the like junks.

My message here is also for those who now oppose the idea of a total ban on the movie. They may think that this is really an absurd call. But not. This movie even at this juncture is fit for a total ban, unless and until, some objectionable scenes are deleted and even the title of the movie is changed. If the CBFC clearance is cited as a green signal, then the ‘appeal’ concept in the very Jurisprudence will be redundant.

In the same parallel, even in Cricket a 3rd Umpire, or a photo finish reviews, sensitive mikes to judge a batsman’s fate does not warrant at all. Suffice if the Ground Umpire lifts his hand, the batsman s fate is sealed.

What is ‘fringe’? Of late, some TV channels appear to have lost senses and started shouting ‘fringe’ one after another. I wonder are Rajastanis are fringe elements in our society? What is that yardstick to judge a group of pained people as ‘fringe’? Rajasthan has produced a number of artists, over 50 top sports personalities, winners of Sena Medals, Vir Chakra, Shourya Chakra medals, musicians, politicians, freedom fighters, professionals, Advocates, Chartered Accountants. If a leader respects his traditional dress and appear with a turban, but not in a western suit, will that make him a ‘fringe’?

A TV channel ran non-stop rebuking the entire Rajastanis as barbaric, misogynists, retrograde clan. They substantiated their claim with figures and facts. Wonder how a group of people will lose their moral ground to protest an act of desecration, on the grounds of prevailing ‘reality’? The presence of evils in their group?

Then, when Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam was held up virtually by a mob, our Judiciary directed Haasan to settle with the mob outside. Then where were Bhupendra Chowbay, Rahul Kanwal, Arnab Goswami, Navika Kumar’s? why they did not raise the comparable logic with statists of victims of Islamic terror state wise and questioned the ‘mob’ to behave?

Also wonder why this same media, just a few months ago were siding with Tamil Culture of ‘Jallikattu’ and never thought of bringing fore the ills of ‘female infanticides’ that was rampant in Tamil Nadu to counter the Tamil agitators on Jallikattu”

Is it the thinking of the media, that if we stand by Dipika Padukone’s whirling moves singing the song Ghoomer’ like Madhuri Dixit did in Tezaab, playing the role of a chaste Hindu Maharani, will overnight bring societal changes in Rajastan? Or is it in any manner satisfy our ‘scheduled minority’ populace?

If the patrons of the movie Padmavati’ base their stand on the fact that ‘Padmavati’ is not a historical fact, then accepting their version, they can even change the movie title to Deepika instead of Padmavati? It is highly improper to claim that ‘Allauddin Khalji’ is a historical figure, but Padmini is fictional in the same contemporary time.

If they are adamant on this aspect and not willing to change the name of the movie, then it is proof enough that the movie was made consciously to arouse the Hindus passions across the country, to ensure their commercial success record in Bollywood history.

As the media and Directors guild vehemently supporting the movie and critical of the Karni Sena, one wonders, why a similar resistance was not shown by the media and Directors guild when Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam was taken for a ride by the Muslim fringe?

As more and more liberal Hindus are carefully watching the double standards of the media and Bollywood fraternity it is time for both to rethink on its pseudo-secular agenda, and before it is too late.

Concerned over Rohingyas in Burma but careless about Hindus in Bangladesh. Why Didi?

0

A week ago, a mob in Bangladesh torched around 30 house belonging to the minority community, read Hindus, following romours that a youth from the minority community posted an offensive post on Facebook. One person was killed. The incident took place in Rangpur District’s Thakurpara Village, about 300 Kms away from the national capital, Dhaka.

This is not a rare occurrence in Bangladesh where these incidents have periodically happened over the years ever since partition.

Bangladesh have always taken pride in Bengali nationalism, which won them their independence or rather liberated them from the Islamic state of Pakistan. That it is happening under the watch of Mrs. Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is all the more baffling.

That aside, many of our leaders and well know personalities  from other side of Bengal, West Bengal have rarely spoken a word about these atrocities in Bangladesh. The Bengali Mainstream media has rarely done any substantial reporting about the issue and the political dispensation in West Bengal has largely put their mouth shut on the issue.

Interesting, the incumbent Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms. Mamata Banerjee tweeted this on the Rohingya issue:

While I really admire Ms. Mamata Banerjee for her stand on the Rohingya issue, what has got wondering is why haven’t she spoken against the atrocities on Bengali Hindus in Bangladesh. She never spoke on the atrocities then and is silent even now. Why this indifference?

Rallies were being taken out in support for Rohingyas in the heart of Kolkata but not a single March against constant preservation of the Bengali Hindus in Bangladesh. Not a single tweet from the ruling political dispensation in West Bengal.

By cherry picking the issues you want to speak about, what is Ms. Banerjee trying to prove. The hypocrisy of Ms. Banerjee and her political party, TMC clearly shows in their actions. That they are selectively in their activism and only rally for issue pertaining to the Muslims is no big secret and the recent events just goes on affirm the same.

My  question to Ms. Banerjee or  as we lovingly call her Didi is that ‘sob manusher kothay bhabun shudu ek dhromer manusher kotha bhable hobe‘ (Think about people from all communities, will thinking about only one community help). Are Bengali Hindus not your own and only Rohingyas? What should I make of your silence and selective outrage?

But I guess she’ll let her silence do the talking and put her selectivity as it seems like she has sold her conscience in exchange of electoral gain.

This is why Rani Padmini chose death

0

For last few weeks, people are talking all type of things about Rani Padmini of Chittorgarh. Some are saying that Rajputs lost all the wars they fought against Muslim invaders; well, I’ll accept that if it soothes your flared tempers for some reason. Some Devdutt called it highest form of patriarchal decision since a woman went on to sacrifice her life while her husband & other male of her family went on to fight the aggressor to ultimate death, yes, ultimate death.

There are many examples of sacrifices where people chose death over surrender to aggressor. The prominent examples are of Sikh Guru Teg Bahadur against Aurangzeb, Chandrasekhar Azad against British empire & Rani Padmini of Chhitor against Khilji. What’s common between these three sacrifices are that they inspired generations to come that your way of life, your culture is important. They inspired generations to fight against tyrants, aggressor & brute forces.

Guru Teg Bahadur stood against Aurangzeb, the king of India. Had it not been Guru Teg Bahadur’s refusal to accept Islam & accept the death as honour, Sikhism could have only been found in books. That one sacrifice of Guru Teg Bahadur gave us leaders like Guru Gobind Singh & Maharaja Ranjeet Singh.

Chandrasekhar Azad killed himself rather getting caught by British Army. By choosing death over being a prisoner, he gave a message to other freedom fighters that death as a free person is far more superior than leading a life of slavery & torture, hence, inspired the youth to take active participation in freedom movement.

What these two examples of sacrifice tell us that Rani Padmini’s don’t?

Rani Padmini was epitome of bravery who chose death over life time of rape & slavery. She didn’t chose to die because the Rajput fighters were not capable enough to fight. She chose death when she knew that death for Rajput fighters is certain since they were hugely outnumbered. Rajputs, even after knowing that death is certain in this war, chose to die. That was the sacrifice Rajputs made for Rani Padmini. Those flames gave rise to the Fighters like Rana Sanga & Maharana Pratap.

When Rajput Karni Sena is fighting to remove the fictional dream sequence, they are honoring the sacrifice Rani Padmini made for each one of them.

Random Thoughts from the Fringes on Timing the Numbers

0

For the past few weeks we have been bombarded about the fringe, numbers and timings. A lot of thoughts crossed my mind randomly during this heavy bombardment. The title of this article captures the essence of what the nation w ants to know and probably avoid.

First the numbers.

On the ease of doing business we improved from 142 to 100. On hunger index we dropped from 100 to 103, though some form the fringe may argue that we dropped from 56 to 103. The PEW numbers are trending at a healthy 70% to 95 % in favor of NaMo and the NDA government. The Moody’s have upgraded India from Baa3 to Baa2. GDP has dropped to 5.7%. And lastly the Delhi pollution numbers are varying tantalizingly between 999 and 431 because of which none of us are able to ‘see ‘ anything clearly in the ‘smog’ that has engulfed all of us.

Next the Fringe .

The dictionary describes the ‘Fringe’ as the “outer part or least important area, group or activity”. The opposition parties in general and the Congress party in particular neatly fit into this. The “Karni Sena”,the “Award Wapsi Gang”, the “Gau Rakshaks” and the “Bhakths” also qualify for this unique distinction. However the pride of place is held by the much decorated main stream media popularly known as the “Lutyens Cabal” in the merit list of “FRINGE”.

I write from the ‘fringes’ — outer edge, margin, periphery as per the dictionary. So I am not from the fringe but from the fringes like many other distinguished, unbiased, independent commentators without an agenda ( or without work and a retired senior citizen to boot).

And lastly the Timing.

Any one familiar with cricket, football, boxing etc, would know the importance of timing. With perfect timing a batsman can send the ball sailing over for a six; an agile fielder with a perfectly timed dive or a perfectly timed throw can have the same batsman stranded in the middle.

Now that I have set the background and established my credentials let me get to the subject.

The PEW numbers were ‘pooh poohed ‘ by the fringe for claiming a huge 84% in favor of NaMo from a sample size of 2464. Well NaMo got 8.45 lakh votes in Vadodra and 5.81 lakh votes in Varanasi. The BJP got 172 million votes but only 31% of the vote share. You may recall that the fringe berated the BJP for getting only 31% and tom toming that 69 % did not favor BJP. Well at that time nearly 14 lakh votes for NaMo was inconsequential; but 31% was very significant!! But today 84% is inconsequential but 2464 is very significant!

And just as one would expect, the timing of the PEW data is also questioned because the Gujarat elections are around the corner. Mercifully Himachal elections escaped dissection due to wrong timing!
Of course the timing of Moodys is also suspect and who else can say it better with perfect timing than Mihir Sharma!

Many form the main fringe question some of the ‘Padmavati fringe’. While the Padmavati fringe apart from other issues questions the timing of the release, the media fringe raises questions of FOE and FOS.

The ‘Kashmir Azaadi ‘ fringe wants everyone to talk to everyone who pelts stones, waves ISIS/Pak flags, raises anti India slogans and kills our soldiers. However some members from the same fringe oppose Sri Sri talking to every Tom, Dick and Harry on Ayodhya. 40 years of talks on Ayodhya has achieved nothing they claim. They wouldn’t say what 70 years of talking to every Tom Geelani, Dick Malik and Harry Abdullahs has achieved for Kashmir. 40 is greater than 70 and timing of Sri Sri when the SC is seized of the issue is all that matters to the Fringe.

The ‘AAP Fringe’ would not explain why they can’t build multi-level parking facility for additional buses in the existing depots; nor would they explain why existing buses cannot be converted or traded for CNG or Electric buses! They will explain at length how the LG is preventing them from doing work.

By now I am sure very one would be confused as to which number has higher value. I know that 3 is greater than 2 and even Hardik Patel would concur. But for Moody’s to say that Baa2 is greater than Baa3 or for the fringe to claim that 2464 is higher than 14 lakhs beats me to the core!

P(H)EW!! Now that I have got this out of my chest I can breathe freely whatever the AQI numbers are!! I can also happily indulge from the fringes in a MOODY chant of “BAA BYE “.

Shame on you Devdutt Pattanaik, you are worse than the ‘liberals’

0

As release date of Pamavati is coming close, Internet is getting divided into two groups. First one, who have no idea about Indian history and pride, and second group which wants to stop it’s release at any cost. I find both a bit extreme (my view), though everyone have right to express their views on any matter [Yes it’s internet age and you can be an expert without knowledge].

But there should be a limitation, a line must be drawn that no one should dare to cross. If you want everyone to understand your view, be logical and don’t start to abuse their faith. yesterday night someone who claim to be a mythologist and author named Devdutt Pattanaik decided to abuse Rajputs, Hindus, RSS and BJP while showing his support to Allaudin Khilji and Padmavati movie. This same guy was endorsed by Sonam Kapoor as representative of Hinduism earlier:

Devdutt Pattanaik was teaching everyone that getting raped and enslaved for a lifetime of sexual exploitation is better than committing suicide:

If a woman didn’t agree with his bizarre logic, he termed it “patriarchy” (oh the irony):

He then stooped lower to mock people by misrepresenting their arguments:

He even dragged great freedom fighters into his filth:

Twitter users were not in a mood to let him abuse every woman because of his sick mentality, but his answers were more idiotic than his logic.

https://twitter.com/iAnkurSingh/status/931570112078888960

And when people started to reply him, he started calling them ugly, rapist and killer of daughters:

And mind you that he was abusing Hindus all night long and this morning too, but not a single Liberal/Bollywood Star/ Media person tried to shut him up.

Dear liberals, you want Hindus to get abused every time and stay quiet? And my question is to Sonam Kapoor too, what do you know about Hinduism? And if your teacher are like this sick person, I want your father to take you to school again. And I am ready to pay for your school fees because Hindus are mostly kind-hearted.

My last point is that movie Padmavati will get released, and as this twitter user said it will come out clean. But liberals who are abusing Hindus and our pride, we are ashamed of you.

Why has the Muslim community been politically marginalized in India?

0

Is the Muslim community facing political oblivion today? Definitely yes as per the trends we are witnessing today.

In the recent elections that have taken place in the country, there has been talks veered around dalit consolidation, OBC vote bank and of course, the upper caste mobilization under the banner of Hindutva but hardly, anyone seems interested in the minority community.

In the present Lok Sabha, the number of Muslim MPs is only 23 and all these MPs come from only 7 states. Can you imagine that a state like UP has no Muslim representation in Lok Sabha? Isn’t it catastrophic that a community that has around 15 percent population as per 2011 census and has ruled the country for over more than 700 years has less than 5 percent representation in Lok Sabha?

It was not long ago that the community was rated as an invincible vote bank and most of the parties were not averse to appeasing them & pampering to their sentiments even if the sentiments appeared to be not guided by any reason. The Congress needed them and even the socialist cum Mandal rath rolled on their shoulders. How has the situation changed so dramatically over the last decade or so?

The victory of the Modi led BJP in 2014 LS elections demolished the myth of Muslims as a monolithic unbeatable vote bank. The nation saw as to how a party could sweep power even without seeking votes from the Muslims and giving them miniscule representation in ticket distribution. The alienation of the Muslims is not going to be remedied soon because of the strengthened feeling among even the secular leaders that they need to keep Hindus in good humour by not appearing to be pro-Muslim beyond a certain limit.

What explains the new found love of Rahul Gandhi for temples? What compels Samajwadi Party to rediscover immense love for Lord Krishna and talk of building his 50 meter tall statue? What explains the increase in momentum of Ram Mandir movement juxtaposed by the silence of all the so called secular parties?

Hindutva, Nationalism and Cultural homogeneity have become the new buzz words; the political space for the so called secular parties has shrunk dramatically and the BJP is in power not only at the centre but also in most of the states. The opposition parties are finding the ground beneath their feet shaking and hence their realization that the majority Hindus can’t be ignored any longer.

Is Hindutva to be held responsible for the plight of Muslims? Yes, to some extent but then let’s not fool ourselves by thinking that this is the only reason. The Muslim community is itself to be blamed for its predicament. Let us contemplate to get to the reasons:

1) The Muslim community failed to develop a credible progressive political leadership since independence and the outcome was disastrous. The vacuum created was filled by the conservative religious Maulanas who acquired the leadership role. The community became more religious and less political. The socio-economic condition of the community is no better than the dalits but you will hardly see them agitating on the streets for reservation like the Patels, the Jats or the Marathas. But when it comes to issues like Shah Bano case, the Triple Talaq or any perceived insult to Prophet, the community is second to none in hitting to the streets. Excessive religiosity has de-politicized the community. The seculars love it and are not hesitant to pay visits to the Maulanas in furtherance of their vote bank politics.

2) Secularism may be at the heart of our constitution but let us be frank enough to admit that the kind of secularism politics we are practicing today has done more harm than good to the community. In its name, appeasement of the minority community became the norm creating heart burning among the majority Hindu community; to cap it, for many overzealous secular leaders, secularism became synonymous with Minoritism. The community became emboldened enough to think that it can get away despite doing anything because it has the numbers to veto the political prospects of any party. Hindu consolidation since nineties is fallout of appeasement and secularism politics.

3) At the time of independence, the Muslim population in India was about 5 percent which has increased to around 15 percent as per 2011 census. Though the overall growth rate in population in the country during 2001 – 2011 was 17.7 percent, in case of Muslims it was 24.6. To be fair to the community, though its growth rate is slowing down, it is much higher than the growth rate of around 16 percent for Hindus. States like West Bengal, Assam and Kerala have seen rapid changes in demography in favour of the Muslims where they are in between 30 percent to 40 percent. The Kashmir imbroglio and the forced pull out of the Kashmiri Pandits have done no less harm to the Muslim cause. Overall, a fear has crept into the Hindu psyche that the Muslim community is increasing its numbers with the sole intention of marginalizing the Hindus in their own country. Add to it, the complete decimation of Hindus in Pakistan and the dwindling HIndu numbers in Bangladesh and the feeling gets buttressed.

4) The Arab spring of 2011 soon turned into winter as conservative radical leadership gained the most from it in Muslim countries and acquired power. Political Islam became the new slogan. Political Islam places the Sharia above the state and is bound to come into conflict with societies that are part of secular constitution democracies which go by equality and rule of law. The increasing radicalization of the Muslims has even created problems for many countries in Europe and USA which are not willing to induct the community members into their territories. Adherence to Sharia laws, open display of Islamic religious symbols and overt or covert support for terrorists are issues that no secular democratic country or society will accept on their soil. Some of the countries like China and France have banned the sporting of beards for Muslim men and scarfs for Muslim women.

When we look at India, of late, the nation has seen heightened Islamization in West Bengal, Kerala and Assam. There have been reports of Hindu properties being vandalized, Hindus being driven away from their homes and Hindus being prohibited from even celebrating their festivals in several parts of West Bengal like Malda, Dhulagarh and Basirhat. There have been calls from Muslim clergy to give punishment to so called offenders of the community’s sentiment as per Sharia and not law of the land. All these incidents have set the alarm bells ringing. The open defiance of the community to the singing of National Anthem and adoption of Yoga has further reinforced the feeling that Indian culture/civilization does not matter to the Muslims.

5) The refusal of the community to engage with the cultural civilizational ethos of the country and the tendency to look towards West Asia and the Wahabi traditions in contrast to the Sufi Islamic traditions of the sub continent has engendered hostility among the majority Hindu population in an era when the uncertainty of globalization is pushing a burgeoning middle class to seek its cultural roots for solace. The masses have always been religious in India but so far, they were kept under lid, by so called secular forces. The tendency of the community to make heroes out of people who were regarded as destroyers of Hindu temples & cultures is also something that has not gone unnoticed by the people.

6) The minority tag has done more harm than good to the community. It’s high time this tag gets removed as it has prevented the amalgamation of the community with the national mainstream. After all, a 25 crore strong community which has more than 30 percent population in three states and has the capacity to determine electoral outcomes in 100 odd constituencies out of 543, does not qualify to be a minority. Even the judiciary has at times expressed disapproval of the yardsticks adopted in determination of minority status. In a democratic secular nation, caste or religion should never demarcate minority status but the criteria should be the level of socio-economic deprivation. The minority tag has perpetuated Minoritism to the detriment of Hindus in the country.

7) Lastly but not the least, visceral hatred of the Muslim community for the BJP & Hindu Right has culminated in making the the community a political outcaste at a time when there seems to a paradigm shift in national ideological landscape with the collapse of the Nehruvian consensus. The common wisdom says — If you can’t fight a system, just enter into it and try to weaken it from inside. I think the Muslim community should learn to engage with BJP and not shun it for that will prove counterproductive in the long run.

Political marginalization of Muslims will be disastrous for the country. After all, along with other communities, they have also shed their blood in the making of independent India; they have been equal partners in the building of our composite cultural heritage and have co-existed with the Hindus for more than 1300 years. The Indian polity needs to think and introspect; the Muslim leadership also needs to do the same as to what has gone wrong. The rules of the electoral polity have made it imperative that no community survives in politics of exclusion, isolation and sectarianism.

Transgenders need acceptance in our society

0

What thoughts came in your mind when you read the title or whenever you hear the word ‘transgender’? Do you visualize them standing at traffic signals/trains or in other places asking for money and you get uncomfortable with your wife/kids/gf/bf? Yes, might be.

Of course, we belong to a civilized society where their act make you uncomfortable and you find it reasonable to just avoid/ignore. Right?

WRONG…

You might be wondering what the hell is this guy talking about. Let’s start with some practical introspection.

How many of us have seen them sitting next to you or even in campus of your schools/colleges for studies? How many of us have seen them as our colleagues in our office? Where do these people exist in our so-called civilized society?

Does it ring any bell?

Are we really so inhuman/dumb that we just think that they don’t want to study or do job or be a part of our society or is it the other way around? Do they get the opportunity? Now, I am not referring to reservation or something but do we accept them socially?

We have issues when they start removing their clothes while we hesitate to give some money but we are okay or we don’t even care when we see restrooms/bathrooms for male/female and none for them. Have you really seen any restroom for them anywhere in malls/roads/theaters or anywhere? Basically, we are forcing them to be naked and when they do that, it disturbs the image of our society. Hypocrisy!!!

Remember, Maoists/Naxalites (not terrorists) were born when they were sidelined by the society and government and today we are unable to deal with them. Of course, killings can’t be justified when they are given the option to come in the main stream and today it has become more political than fight against oppression but for transgenders, we are doing the same thing.

What are they supposed to do for their living? No studies, no jobs, hardly any place to stay, rare entries in malls/public places… Do they deserve this because they are born this way.

We are at times where people are fighting for LGBT communities, it was highly impossible earlier but today, I think we can think and talk about transgenders.

Don’t hesitate when they ask for money? If you earn well, nothing will happen if you give 10-20 rupees. Well, I am not advocating begging industry and it is completely individual call if you are okay by just passing by them and then giving excuses to your friend about how begging industry is a big problem today. But, at least don’t try to be sarcastic or make fun or show yourself uncomfortable and this is the least, which we can do. Things will change gradually, may be government will do their part but it has to be initiated from within the society, from within us.

Another forgotten hero – Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali

0

India is a victim of abundance when it comes to the people who never got their due. Many heros and their stories have either have been diluted by the flow of time and some have been deliberately erased. During the freedom struggle the incident of Jallianwala Bagh in 1919 shocked many. One had never seen such a brutal wrath of the British Empire, where pure hell was unleashed on unarmed Indian civilian. Colonel Dyer, who was then a temporary brigadier general became the face of the barbaric act done by the Britishers.

This incident has rightly found space at every schoolbooks. In the same decade another incident happened which is neither remembered nor its Hero. The Incident is “Peshawar Kand” and its hero was “Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali”.

Chandra Singh Bhandari was born in 1891 in a very humble family. Born in a farmer’s family, he never got a chance to get a formal education and was self-taught. At a young age of 23 he joined the armed forces in 1914. Within one year he got his first assignment to fight in France followed by Mesopotamia and Baghdad. By now he had worked his way up to being a Havaladar. After the end of first world war the British Army was being trimmed down, though he got to keep his job but was demoted back to Soldier rank. This made him very upset and decided to walk out. The officers were very much aware of his bravery and managed to retain him.

During this time there was hardly anyone who was not touched by the freedom struggle and was not influenced by the Mahatma. When Mahatma Gandhi came to Uttarakhand (then Uttar Pradesh), he held a public meeting in June 1929 at Bageshwar, Almora which young Chandra Singh attended wearing his army cap. This caught the attention of Gandhiji. The Mahatma asked him if he was not afraid of the army cap to which young Chandra Singh replied by saying that if Gandhiji wished, he could remove his cap. When Gandhiji presented him with a Khadi cap, the soldier pledged to redeem the honor of the cap one day.

One can never hide their patriotic feelings and neither could Chandra Singh. British officers could sense it and he was transferred to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan was very active and was leading a ‘Laal Kurti Agitation’ to support civil disobedience call made by Gandhiji. A big demonstration was called for 23rd April 1930 and thousands of Pathans had gathered in front of the Kissakhani Bazzar Police Chowki in Peshawar and the national flag was flying in their midst.

Captain Ricket ordered Chandra Singh who had been promoted to Havaldar Maj. by then to lead his men of Garhwal Rifles and crush the agitation. After giving warning to the demonstrators Captain Rickets gave the dreaded orders“ Garhwal Rifles, three rounds of fire’, these orders met with equally firm orders of young Chandra Singh saying ‘Garhwal rifles, cease fire’ who was adamant that his men would not shoot on innocent citizens.

This act of his sent the shock waves through the British Empire. He was arrested with his men and was tried for treason. Lawyer Mukandilal managed to change his sentence from death penalty to life imprisonment. The government confiscated his property and he served 11 years of rigorous sentence through various prison cells across the country.

His action not only brought high degree of respect for already renowned Garhwal Rifles but people started to address him as “Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali’. After his release his zeal to fight the British became stronger and was arrested again for three years. He could not enter Garhwal until 1946 due to various restriction placed on him.

He had stint in politics and contested from Communist Party in 1957 and adamantly opposed Nehruvian congress. After a long illness the brave Chandra Singh fell silent in 1979.

By resisting those orders did he saved captain Rickets from committing that barbaric act which would have put him at the same pedestal as Dyer or he was better of following the orders and live a happy life afterwards. He paid a heavy price for listening to his conscious. What he got in return was a stamp which was issued in his memory. His name is taken with utmost respect in the hills of Uttarakhand but does rest of India knows about it? I am not sure.

While Jallianwala Bagh is rightly remembered by everyone, hardly anyone knows about Peshawar Incident. Is it only because one person averted that massacre and we really do not care for something which never happened or we should only remember the tragedies? Tough Tragedies shake us, make us angry forcing us to think, someone pays a very heavy price for it. I am sure there could be many more such hero’s who had walked the length and breadth of this great land. Who are we to ask of what they got in return? I am sure the Brave Chandra Singh never thought of it either. Hero’s don’t always wear capes, sometimes they wear a cap too.

Why I am glad about Padmavati controversy

0

I am personally thrilled regarding the developments of Padmavati. These big and powerful directors and actors should get off their high horse and their elitism and assurance regarding how FoE will save them in this country– their overconfidence needs to become old. So I am quite pumped about how things are shaping. I am glad that the makers of Padmavati messed with one of the most daring communities of India – the esteemed and brave Rajputs who won’t back down from a good fight, a worthy fight. No matter how “barbaric and violent” the Rajputs’ claims sound (cutting off Deepika’s nose or threat to SLB’s life), try to understand where this anger stems from instead of dismissing them as violent. The Rajputs are ready to prove just how much they believe in their cause, in their community, in its historical truths, and just how much they are unwilling to allow the collective historical memory of their community to be tampered with because it suits a modern man’s secular agenda or imaginative fancies and whims.

Sometimes people do not understand how willingly ready and prepared you’d be to fight for what you believe in, for what is right, for defending the honour and image of your community – and people, like the ones that crowd Bollywood, will never understand this because they are part of the modern disease that has afflicted most of the urban beings in this country very strongly – liberalism and secularism – these are rootless people with no affinity to any group or any community – they don’t know what it’s like to fight for your people – there isn’t even the idea of “your people” – because these are self-alienated, rich people living in their bubbles – indifferent, arrogant, with no affinity to the soil they belong to – it doesn’t matter to them what the truth is – they are so blissfully comfortable in their hubris of not being held accountable and the comfortable idea that they will be saved by notions like Freedom of Expression and “creative license” and whatnot that they don’t even bother to be respectful and mindful of the truth anymore – truth is dispensable at the altar of money and fame. These people have lost their integrity.

Moreover they have the gall to say that we have regressed as a nation? If Miss Padukone’s idea of progress is “let me say and do anything without being held accountable for the fiction I am propagating and perpetuating” then it is a warped one and in much need of being checked and rectified. These people lack a social conscience – these are disconnected people – and the sad truth is that Deepika Padukone or SLB are merely two entities of this vast network of the film and television fraternity. I am extremely gladdened that their seat of power has been shaken so terribly this time. I am greatly thankful to the Rajput community to stand up for their truth and for defending their honour.

If Padmavati gets stalled this time because of the sheer togetherness and resolve of a community to fight for their truth, it will be a big achievement for India as a whole. Now imagine what would happen if Rajputs were supported by other communities increasingly and people got together in greater numbers? Scores of people like SLB will think a hundred times before making movies like Padmavati again, before showing a blatant disregard for historical facts and zero respect for others. They will no longer be all-powerful people wielding strange truths in the name of creativity and freedom of expression. They will be held accountable – their research, approach and attitude will be challenged and questioned. They will no longer be able to confidently peddle lies because it suits their agenda and sells their movie. They might actually have to care about what they are putting out in the world and how they will be taken to task if they mess with the truth.

It might just be a story for these moviemakers but for the community that actually suffered at the hands of Khilji, it was a lived reality, a painful experience – and to ignore their pain so that your imaginary story can be allowed to take birth, is downright spoilt and irreverent. Filmmakers need to drill this in their heads – nothing you make happens in a vacuum, each story carries historical, cultural, social or political traces – and to take your liberties with that is highly irresponsible behaviour that you definitely will be chastised for – so don’t mess with it. I genuinely hope Padmavati can be seen as a deterrent for future filmmakers with similar knack of distorting historical truths and making a mockery of it.

Shehla Rashid got educated, not in JNU though

Yesterday evening was a regular evening on twitter, tweeps were busy with getting RTs. Suddenly at around 9:13 separatist supporter @Shehla_rashid came up with a series of tweets blaming BJP/RSS of abusing and threatening women on Internet:

Well this series of tweets was mere frustrated rant because neither she provided any evidence, nor she was targeted for any stupidity recently. So I wondered what has triggered her? Then I found out reason behind her outrage, on 14th November people decided to speak truth about Jawahar Lal Nehru and that truth was not the one we were forced to read in history books. This hurt many liberals and twitter warriors (Paid by congress/AAP) badly.

But as time and again, twitter once again took responsibility and taught Shehla about reality. This twitter user told her about respect and power BJP has provided to women in party

Another twitter user showed her what happens to woman in a party which is so close to Shehla

This was just the beginning, twitter was not ready to let her go without providing complete knowledge.

While Shehla is still living in her anti-Indian dream world, my small advice will be better read before making a powerful statement. Stupidity can’t get discounted as FoE.
