Should we give aid to Pakistan?- A response to Quint’s article

0

Today I read an article in Quint. The article was written by none other than Sudheendra Kulkarni. He used to serve as an advisor to Atal Bihari Vajpayee in matters related to Pakistan. After reading the article, one can figure out why India and Pakistan were involved in direct (Kargil) or indirect (LOC face off after 2001 Parliament attack) wars through most of Mr. Vajpayee’s tenure.

He writes, that India, particularly Modi, should help Pakistan by giving it aid, “If’ they are ready to take it. Modi should go out of his way to give them aid that too without any strings attached”. I think what he really meant was, we should pay for the dead bodies of our own soldiers and civilians. He suggests that Modi should not just do lip service but walk the talk by literally shoving money to the throat of Pakistan. He also suggests the ways to do it. To balance it out, he adds a few benefits that are well known to any person with average intelligence of geography and economics. The biggest problem with his arguments has been pointed by himself when he says, “The said neighbour may not have the best of relations with you. But if you rush to them with a sincere and no-strings-attached offer of assistance, who knows, your neighbour might realise the virtue and long-term benefits of good-neighbourliness.”

Who knows, your neighbour might realise the virtue of good-neighbourliness. How many times do we Indians need to prove that we have been good neighbours? We have upheld Indus water treaty despite many wars been forced on us. We have returned the soldiers captured in wars without anything in exchange. We have taken the first step towards peace umpteen number of times despite the constant terrorist attacks on our soil. We have even allowed their artists, actors, singers, ‘intellectuals’, etc. to earn their bread in our country despite their nation (and army) doing everything in its power to destabilize India. When are we going to realize that Pakistan is never going to reciprocate any good will gesture? When will we understand that Pakistan sees our well meaning gestures only as our weakness? When will we stop this relentless, undying need of ours to appease Pakistan?

We need to realize that Pakistan is an aberration forced on this ancient land and civilization by the greed and shrewdness of then colonial powers. They have moved on but we are still paying the price of that mistake. The dark clouds of violence have made this Indian subcontinent their permanent home since that ill-fated day of 14th August. And not just in terms of violence, but even our social and political climate has been made vicious because of that single biggest blunder in the history of mankind. Our politics has evolved to appease Muslim community (of course just the symbolism and tokenism) to such an extent that calling oneself Hindu is looked down upon. This logic I would never be able to understand that those who partitioned the country are hailed but the entire fallout of that action has been on Hindus so much so that they have to constantly prove that they are secular either by denouncing their own religion or by being shameful of their Hindu identity. How were the Hindus responsible for the partition? And how come the political and social consequences have completely fallen on them? This bewilders me beyond imagination.

Indians, Sudheendra Kulkarni kind of Indians, need to realize the only way to have peace is to correct the aberration made decades ago. How do we correct that? Well, Bangladesh independence has proved that nations cannot and should not be built solely on the basis of religion. It is the civilization and culture that binds people together, not the religion. So the only way to bring peace to this troubled land is to redraw the boundaries based on culture and civilization. Pakistan is not a nation but a piece of land created to serve the interests of some. Earlier, it was western powers, now it is the Pakistan army and its corrupt politicians. The only way out is to let Pakistan crumble within to let the ancient cultures come back. Sindhi, Punjabi, Balochi, Tribals – let these cultures curve out their own separate land and end this abonimation finally end. This is the only way to bring ever lasting peace to the land of oldest civilization. So forget about giving aid to Pakistan, we should stop all our trade and economic activities with them to expedite the process of disintegration.

I am sure people like Sudheendra Kulkarni would cringe at the very mention of this idea though the logic behind their behavior eludes me. The only reason that I can think is that it aids their politics and let them stay relevant. If there is no Pakistan, the entire politics would change and this would make them irrelevant. This is what drives them to promote talks with Pakistan, forces them to give suggestions like this (giving aid to Pakistan) and take Pakistan’s side against their own nation. Or is it the money? Are some of them the beneficiaries of the corrupt ecosystem of army, politicians and intellectuals that exist in Pakistan? Well, whatever be the reason, I am not holding my breath for them to change.

Why NRC in Assam worries a Hindu whose mother tongue is Bengali

0

The article below is more of a written outpouring of emotions based on my personal opinions rather than an academic or unbiased analysis and should be treated as such.

Thousands of miles away here in England the debate regarding NRC in Assam has reached. As all of us, Indian students gather around the television in our residence to watch the news from our country, I somehow feel less Indian. I see all of my other friends jubilant that nearly 40 lakh people are being considered illegal intruders, the question that creeps into my mind is that is there no distinction between an intruder and someone whose culture is indigenous to the culture of India?

I see my friends debating on how soon the foreigners should be deported, whether or not they should be deported is not the question they seem concerned about. The question that I ask myself is are they not aware that 40 percent of the people whom they are calling foreigners are Hindus. The answer they give is that it doesn’t matter if you are not an Indian you are not an Indian. Even if in the whole world it doesn’t matter whether you are Hindu or not, in India it always has and in India, it always should.

Condition of Hindus in Bangladesh.

But no, on the TV I see senior BJP ministers of the Assam government proudly stating that even Hindus are facing the problem, that they are not distinguishing between a Hindu and a Muslim from Bangladesh, as if it were something to be proud of. My ancestors during the partition were able to catch the boat and cross the river to enter into India because we were suddenly told Bharat is being divided and Sylhet is not Bharat anymore. We caught the boat and crossing the breadth of the country settled on the banks of Ganges and Yamuna in Prayagraj. Many people couldn’t catch that boat, they couldn’t accept that Sylhet is not a part of Bharat anymore.

But when every year, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s temple is attacked, when monks of Ramakrishna mission are beheaded, they have not option but to leave Sylhet on a journey towards India. A land where they think they will be accepted and treated as Indians not refugees, but alas they are not even treated as refugees but as intruders who have entered to change the demographics of the country. I watch at a panelist who is debating in the news channel as an RSS ideologue, the journalist asks him, “Bangladesh Se Aaye Hinduo or Anya Bangladeshiyo Mein Kya Koi Antar Nahi Hai?” I wait for his answer with hope. He answers that this is not about religion, it’s about protecting the indigenous people of Assam from foreigners.

I have nothing against the Assamese people and I look at them just as Indian people but when they address the Hindus with whom I share my blood as foreigners I can’t resist the urge to find out more about them. Only in India is it possible that people who have entered the country from Malaya few centuries ago, who still don’t identify themselves as complete Hindus, would have the liberty to call Hindus who speak Bengali, whose ancestors chanted the Purusha Sukta on the banks of Saraswati, whose ancestors after the drying up of Saraswati, followed the downward stream of Maa Ganga and settled there, whose descendants still chant the 10.8.125 Sukta from Rigveda, only in India is it possible that they will be addressed as foreigners. How I wish it was Bharat my ancestors settled in, instead of India.

Expecting something from the political parties in India is worthless, they seemed more concerned about losing their vote bank which they have cultivated for a long time and hence continued with their minority appeasement. But my expectation from the people who bow down to the Saffron Flag was that they will make a distinction between Hindus from Bangladesh who face persecution and other Bangladeshis. But everyone seems happy that the intruders have been identified that no one is concerned that Hindus are being clubbed with them.

If my ancestors were 25 years late and crossed the boat after 1971, would they be also considered intruders, whether my ancestry is Indian or not is that something my lords in Supreme Court will decide, who these days seem very eager to decide everything related to our culture.

It’s 1’0 clock here and on my screen is the famous English prime time journalist. I listen to him scream in a high pitched voice that how he is a proud Assamese and how Assam will not be a dumping ground for alien Bangladeshis irrespective of whether they are Hindus or belong to some other faith. To people like him, my reply is Hindus who were born in Bangladesh are not alien. Whether they were born in this side of the line or that side of the line is immaterial because that line was drawn by brits. Just because they were born on the wrong side of the line they will not be treated as “alien intruders”. Their identity is that of a Hindu and Bharat is their homeland, this right is not given to them because it was written on a parchment of paper a few decades ago by a human being. This right is unalienable because Bharat as the homeland of every Hindu is the god given right of every Hindu. I would urge every Hindu to not adopt the same yardstick for Hindus from Bangladesh and Bangladeshi intruders. They are not the same and never will be, hence should be treated differently.

One of Indira Gandhi’s old interviews is in circulation today in which she expressly states that she doesn’t make a distinction between Hindus from Bangladesh and other Bangladeshis. One can only hope that PM Modi disagrees with her.

Why renaming Mughalsarai was long overdue and its totally justified

0

I am elated at the news of renaming of Mughalsarai as Deendayal Nagar junction. I grew up not far from this place. Not many people know that Deen Dayal Upadhyay died under mysterious circumstances here and his body was found in the railway yard. It is unthinkable in the 24 hour TV news cycle today that the President of a national political party would travel in such obscurity but that was the case just 50 years ago. The story goes that when people gathered around the dead body, nobody could recognize it.  Because of the dress that was on Deen Dayal ji, he was thought of someone from RSS. Then an old RSS hand Kapahi ji was called to recognize his dead body.

Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, a local hero who also belonged to this area had died just a few years ago under similar mysterious circumstances in Tashkent in present day Uzbekistan. Both of these leaders were a challenge to Indira Gandhi and their untimely demise led to Indira’s and communists’ domination of the country that were to follow. Conspiracy theories abounded and knowing how political assassinations were used and are continued to be used by leftists to further their political goals, it is no surprise that people still distrust the conclusions of the inquiry that followed in the wake of both these deaths. This was similar to the death of JFK and MLK in the sixties in USA where conspiracy theories have not subsided and people draw their own conclusions based on their personal predilections.

The demand for renaming the town and the railway junction was made by Jan Sangh and later by BJP but was never taken seriously because of the choke hold of Congress and Socialist parties and their blatant Islamist appeasement policies. Local RSS functionaries including Gurubaksh Kapahi, Jai Prakash Arya and several other people would gather every year on punyatithi to offer floral tribute at the place where Deen Dayal ji’s body was found. There was no monument or even a marker to locate the sacred ground.

Mughalsarai had a reputation as a frontier town because it bordered Bihar. Railway tracks there and the adjoining GT Road were the main transshipment point for cattle smugglers. The train wagons and trucks have to pass through Mughalsarai on their way to abattoirs in West Bengal. Cow slaughter was banned in UP and most of north India but smuggling continued unabated and Mughalsarai was the front line in that fight. It may seem even bizarre to think that socialists today would be for cow protection but the socialists then were different. Prominent socialists like Vinoba Bhave and Jai Prakash Narayan were at the forefront of demanding ban on cow slaughter. BJP/RSS had negligible presence in this area so the agitation and fight was led by peasant castes that form the backbone of Samajwadi Party today. It is ironic that these Samajwadi’s claim to be the inheritors of the legacy of those socialist stalwarts and claim to represent the farmers. These farmers are most affected by cattle smuggling and many treat their livestock as members of their family.

I was part of several picketing activities around those areas in locating bovine shipments in wagons and trucks. We would alert the police and a lot of time police would also be in cahoots with the smugglers. My views on cow slaughter or for that matter any animal slaughter has evolved and I believe that livestock and their life cycle should be managed in a humane but also economically mature way. I feel the wheels of justice has come a full circle. By naming the station in honor of such a worthy individual as Deen Dayal ji, BJP has honored the memory of all those workers who toiled in those depressing times. As I sit here on the other side of the world tens of thousands of miles away and reflect on one of those days in the early eighties, I reminisce about my first visit to the jail cell where my late grandmother was arrested for leading one these agitations on the rail tracks of Mughalsarai, now Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction.

India will see a new PM every month if the united opposition forms govt in 2019

0

The move by congress not to project PM face for the united opposition should be seen more as compulsion politics than as strategic politics or wise politics.

Marking head or heart or brain or liver for a microbe is not possible as microbe is a single celled organism and it does not have any such organs. Similarly the opposition unity is like continuously multiplying colony forming units of microbe where each bacterial cell exists for its relevance than for the colony.

The opposition parties cannot project or identify a Prime Ministerial face either before or after election because the leader of every political party in the cohort wants to become Prime Minister of India. Imagine if all the political parties agree to share the PM post on rotation, there will be 60 Prime Ministers at the rate of one per month for 5 year term would happen.  Still many more claimants with disgruntlement for not getting a chance to become Prime Minister of India is likely to occur.

Imagine every month one new Prime Minister! What would be the progress of our country? Another wit also we cannot deny. Even when someone holds the position of Prime Minister for a month, several undesignated Prime Ministers are going to be in the system like how the scene was during UPA 2.

India is likely to have more Prime Ministers than Ministers of cabinet or state rank if the opposition parties win the election in 2019. The question is should India elect the opposition parties to fulfill their personal ambition to become Prime Minister of India at least for a month or to develop the country with vision, clarity, direction, commitment like Modiji? Should India boast to the world that India is the first and may the only country to have 60 Prime Ministers for 60 months?

If we the Indians misuse our franchise are we not creating the law of Ander Nagari (अंधेर नगरी) to rein our country and take to destruction?

Wisdom of congress has made it to hold back its extra-great leader from projecting him as prospective Prime Ministerial Candidate against Modiji. If the congress has done the mistake it is not just people of India would have rejected the party, even the entire opposition parties would have isolated the congress.

From the above example, people of India should use their wisdom not to elect the opposition parties and push India to witness the race of several Prime Minister aspirants and applicants.

People of India must realize the urgent need of the hour that the country is on rapid development trajectory and Modiji has more tasks to complete. Therefore the continuation of Modiji as Prime Minister of India is extremely important and the country should not be allowed to torment by all fringe players who run hither and thither for Prime Minister post. If we allow the fringe elements to form a khichadi government, the recipe will be full of Prime Minister applicants and no one will be there to govern the country.

Indian has seen and suffered enough of the politics of the regional parties at the centre. How coalition compulsion can suffocate our development and can defame and shame our country with scams, Manmohan Singh has proved.

India should not be reduced to a laboratory for the fringe players to become Prime Minister for a month and fulfill their Prime Minister ambition. Indians must think of the country and its development. Modiji has done enormous work at the ground level and has transformed the country. Still more such transformations are required to bring total and complete transformation at individual level. It is all about development versus dynasty, disintegration of the country versus Sab Ka Vikas, greedy Prime Minister applicants versus an honest, decisive, committed, visionary Prime Minister- Modiji.

The Anna movement and the opportunist Kejriwal

0

Anna Movement- A movement started by Anna Hazare for Lokpal Bill, and later people joined and it had become as people’s movement.

I remember as a part of it, I had just got the degree and searching for a job, had joined IAC, used to attend their meetings, got updates from friends, and we went there.. In Ramleela Maidan I used to go there daily, I had seen movement in front of me, and being a part of change.

“It was the days of corruption allegations on UPA govt on 2G and CWG Scams. Especially youth thought, “Ho kya raha hain desh mein!”. After this feeling, i felt like to go there and support actively. I went to Jantar Mantar and Ramleela Maidan during the movement, started by Anna for Lokpal. And I thought this would be an end of corruption epidemic in the country.

I hardly knew any active participants, rather leaders of the movement, except for a few of them- Kiran Bedi Mam, and Kumar Vishwas. And of course, learnt about Anna on TV during those days.

“Hotho pe ganga ho hatho me tiranga ho”, “Vande Matram, Bharat Mata ki Jai”, were the slogans we were proudly uttering.

It was all a good feeling that we were being part of a change. Celebrities were supporting this movement, so were all the class of the society. The moment came where we met Mr Thugpurush. Sorry, those days I thought him as a “Yugpurush”. Had heard that he was an IT commissioner and left his job for people and society, for us, for the country. He was an award winner of Ramon Magsaysay etc etc.. A few of his companions like Manish Sisodiya, Sanjay Singh also seemed quite honest and selfless. They looked like a common man, who wanted to bring change, like me. Kiran Bedi was also there. first Lady IPS of India. So, was almost certain that the change was going to happen and am part of it.

I always thought that Kejriwal must be a very honest man, and it’s all a bunch of honest common people.. How fool I was!

I still remember the eyes of participants, full of hope. Auto rickshaw pullers didn’t take fares from us, or charged nominal saying that was his contribution to this noble cause. And we agreed upon the change seemed certain with this revolution.

Everything ACTUALLY CHANGED. Kejriwal came to his reality, formed a political party. We separated from the active participation but supported him on Social Media, because still I was thinking that they were honest.

After election they were not able to win and BJP emerged as a single largest party. But AAP formed govt with congress. This was the time I separated completely.

Then I started to understand that all they wanted was power only by any mean. Otherwise they got seats abusing congress and still they formed government with congress. However govt was just for few a months.

It was their way of politics and so stopped defending AAP. After a few months it was LS election and kejriwal thought he was as great as Modi for the Prime Ministerial candidate and he fought election against him. This move of his made it quite clear that they were the B team of Congress.

In Delhi election they got full majority, but as a common man I never wanted this to happen. Because all they know is to play is blame game and drama instead of working. People voted him to work but all he does is cheap politics.

Now a days when I look back, all I think is, how fool I was in 2011/12. Kejriwal and his thugs called Surgical Strike Fake, and questioned Army. Daily nautanki, when they win, EVMs are OK but when they got defeated, they claim EVMs to be rigged. Initially, I was unable to understand why do they do this? But now it’s clear.

They don’t respect Kumar Vishwas, his own man, who sometimes has different opinion.

Kejriwal cried on every platform saying that congress was corrupt. Now he shares stage with them, working like their parrot. Standing in Support of #Charachor the professor of Ghotala college.

He wants power by any mean, in democracy if you want to oppose someone or you think if someone is corrupt, knock the doors of the court. Only doing Nautanki on Social Media won’t help for betterment of people of Delhi. People gave you mandate to serve them with transparency and utmost efficiency. but instead of that all AAP is doing is just Drama and blaming PM. “Modiji kaam nai karne de rahe”.

What type of #thugbandhan sorry Gathbandhan is this?

PS- It’s a self realisation that how fool I was and what I thought as a common man while going to Ramleela maidan.

NEW DELHI, INDIA – AUGUST 2: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi with his party leaders during a meeting with team members of newly formed All India Professional Congress at AICC on August 2, 2017 in New Delhi, India. The Congress has created two new organisational departments Professionals Congress and Unorganised Workers Congress to reach out to tax-paying professionals and unorganised workers as part of its revival plan.

Global warming: An IITian’s perspective

0

“There’s one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than other, and that is the urgent threat of a changing climate”, said Mr. Barack Obama during Paris climate summit held in December, 2015. But are these two words actually as significant as depicted by the scientific community globally? To answer this question, I was asked to watch the films ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ and ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’ by a renowned professor from IIT Bombay. After going through both of these films, the only answer I have for the above question is that it is Global Warming for a majority of the nations while it is Global Arming for a select few!

One cannot deny the fact that by any measure, the belief that the earth faces an unprecedented threat from ‘human induced climate change’ has been one of the most extraordinary episodes in the history of either science or politics. In my opinion, the way it was seen as in the 20th century is not the same it is being seen in the 21st century. Back then it was a prediction, but now it has come out to be true. And it will turn out to be a harsh truth if we don’t act fast.

I am not saying the above thoughts vaguely. In the research publication ‘A safe operating space for humanity’, it has been stated that mankind has already crossed 3 of the 9 planetary boundaries defined for the sustainable existence of humanity. Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal. Increase in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere has led to an increase of more than 0.9 degree Celsius (most of which has occurred in the past 35 years) which has also led to ocean surface warming by about 0.302 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969. Data from NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment show Greenland lost an average of 281 billion tons of ice per year between 1993 and 2016, while Antarctica lost about 119 billion tons during the same time period. Satellite observations reveal that the amount of spring snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere has decreased over the past five decades and that the snow is melting earlier. Aren’t these sets of proven scientific data valid enough to prove my stance? And if some people believe that the earth is deemed to get warm over time, then I would say that we are simply accelerating this phenomenon.

The only thing which I think should not be linked to global warming is the allied politics. The way global warming is depicted in ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’ actually seems to be an outcome of certain politically motivated groups whose sole aim is to exploit mother earth the way they want to. Global warming is a fact and it’s up to the liberals to make it a reality. Hence there is an utter need in preventing powerful, greedy free market forces from getting in the way of worsening storms and rising sea levels.

People of conscience need to break their ties with corporations financing the injustice of climate change. However, it also needs to be ensured that emerging economies such as India and China do not face the wrath of the global sustainability measures which are quite expensive for these nations. The reason why most developed nations are in favour of global warming issue is that their economies will get an upper hand in exporting the technologies to tackle global warming.

And when it comes to the measures to tackle global warming, I believe that even if these measures do not succeed to tackle the aimed cause, they will definitely be beneficial to us in some form or other. Tree plantation, air quality monitoring, green energy and other efforts towards decarbonisation have gifted the mankind with much more benefits than expected. Had we not decided to tackle the use of CFCs in refrigeration, the situation of our protective ozone layer might have been worst than it was in 1990s. It is our money which is going to be saved when we use public transport. Our lungs will be healthy when we plant more trees in your surroundings. Which one will you prefer to live in; a concrete jungle or a green environment?

One of the reasons I’m excited by what visionary Elon Musk has done with the Tesla is to show that you can reduce global warming and drive a powerful, fun car. A cool car helps make a cooler planet. We need to remind ourselves that our ultimate goal is to improve and sustain the quality of life and the proven way to achieve that is to radically reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. And believe me, preventing global warming from becoming a planetary catastrophe may take something even more drastic than renewable energy, superefficient urban design, and global carbon taxes. We are just at the beginning of exploring and implementing the ways to tackle global warming.

Coming to the end of this critique, I would like to conclude that collective human actions are transforming, even ravaging, the biosphere – perhaps irreversibly – through global warming and loss of biodiversity. Global warming is real. It is happening today. It is being charted by our satellites. It is being charted by our scientist and I think the real key is if we are ready to admit that fact and take the action to make the necessary conversion. We have a single mission: to protect and hand on the planet to the next generation. The time is past when humankind thought it could selfishly draw on exhaustible resources. We need to realise that mother earth is not a commodity. Instead of asking if we are alone, we should ask ourselves that can we survive? We have to wake up to the fierce urgency of now!

“We are the first generation to be able to end poverty, and the last generation that can take steps to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Future generations will judge us harshly if we fail to uphold our moral and historical responsibilities”
-Ban Ki-Moon,
Secretary General,
United Nations.
