SC elated the confidence of common man with its superb verdict on P Chidambaram

0

The verdict of Honorable Supreme Court of India rejecting the bail plea of P Chidambaram which was summarily rejected by the lower court earlier with very caustic remarks like ‘Kingpin’ is seen by common man as justice has been done by the court. Justice is not done just to India but also it reinforced the merit, independence and autonomy of the lower court.

The question is not about whether P Chidambaram is guilty or innocent but he is a very influential person and therefore he can delay even the investigation let alone filing FIR and legal process. The SC in its verdict clearly stated that the investigating agencies need free hand and independence and therefore the appeal of P Chidambaram deems no merit and lack any fitness to entertain.

In anticipation of an interrogation and possible arrest, P Chidambaram has been obtaining anticipatory bail for nearly 100 times which is quite unusual and almost impossible for the ordinary citizen of India. This pre-emptive clever move of P Chidambaram which is otherwise not possible for any ordinary citizen has infuriated large sections of people and they want P Chidambaram must cooperate with the agency like any ordinary citizen to boost the morale of both the congress party and the office that he held in the past such as Minister of Home and Minister of Finance.

The possibility of P Chidambaram getting bail on September 5 2019 looked quite easy until the Honourable judge ask for the evidences from the investigating agency in a sealed cover. On submission, it looks things have changed totally and finally the fate of P Chidambaram has landed him in Tihar jail under judicial custody.

No one is pronouncing P Chidambaram is guilty or innocent but people are angry with how P Chidambaram is scuttling the law to delay the process. There is also a section of people think that if he is innocent why should he avoid custodial interrogation or judicial interrogation and once he proves his innocence, he becomes martyr in politics as well as for the congress party. Is there anything rotten in Denmark which compels P Chidambaram to delay even the preliminary investigations?

No other politician in India would have explored the legal options beyond the text book of law and law under practice like P Chidambaram to avoid custodial interrogation and judicial custody, especially Tihar jail.

The resistance, fear, anxiety and exploration of all legal options by P Chidambaram to prove that he is an extra-constitutional citizen of India and he is not an ordinary citizen shows his higher echelon mind set as well as smelling rat somewhere. Another twist of the tale is that P Chidambaram is embroiled in several investigations like Aircell Maxis, INX, Aircraft purchase etc.

When P Chidambaram himself when attempts to prove he is not an ordinary citizen and how can the public believe that the investigating agencies can book a person of such stature so easily in several cases without strong evidence?

The case of P Chidambaram is indeed an acid test for the agencies to prove their acumen, intent, impartiality and intelligence in justifying all the evidences that they have gathered support their findings.

PM Modi also must ensure speedy judicial process if possible so that the question of what action the government has taken against all those corruption allegations that BJP made before come to power.

The lower court verdict in 2G case has in fact demoralized both the investigating agency and the government from the point of view of the high decibel allegations and the possible loss of money to the exchequer due to 2G scam.

Therefore punishing the guilty is not the only thing people expect but also the credibility of all such allegations made by the respective political parties during election under test. It is also the credibility of the political parties put under test.

If P Chidambaram is convicted based on the evidences if they are fact based and legally tenable, certainly that would not only set the confidence and independence of judiciary and the investigating agencies which is under suspect these days but also would boost the morale the BJP that most of the allegations of BJP would be seen by people of India are based on strong evidence and BJP is a very credible party.

Priyanka Chopra vs Mehwish Hayat et al.

0

Someone tweeted on twitter – ‘Thanks to Priyanka Chopra. Mehwish Hayat made it to CNN.’
Truer words were never spoken. Piggybanking on Priyanka Chopra’s popularity and stature, Mehwish Hayat made into the same frame as her; till the news died down.

I heard the name for the first time in connection with her opinion piece on Priyanka Chopra – ‘The Problem with Priyanka Chopra’, in CNN. I browsed through it.

It could as well have been titled ‘The Problem with India’ and the author could have been anyone from Pakistan. However, as I learnt Mehwish is a famous actress and activist from Pakistan. She indulged in disapproving Priyanka’s support for Indian army in her opinion piece.

Her naivete is heart-breaking as she attempts to give credibility to her opinions, to readers of the world, by stating whatever the Office of Prime Minister of Pakistan and Pakistan’s Human Rights minister believe and communicate. She whines- ‘India has revoked Jammu and Kashmir states’ autonomy.’ She talks of impoverished Kashmir.

‘Mehwish. None of your or your country’s business.’
Everyone in the world has responded washing their hands off this matter citing it as a bilateral issue. And, as a part of the bilateral dialogue between two nations, it has been time and again declared by India that Kashmir is an integral part of India.

She takes bullshitting to the next level as she goes on to talk about the regime which in indulging in activities against the principles of UN which incidentally her nation respects so much. She mentions ‘Speaking as an artist in Pakistan is not easy’. Wonder why? Why does someone with so much influence as her has to be so careful in Pakistani regime?

She accuses Priyanka of lending her name to racism and the Indian regime of being unfair to minorities. In contrast, Mehwish’s intention is to unite people. She has the utmost concern about the minorities in India. If she has contributed to the cause of Hindus, Ahmedis, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Buddhists and other minorities of Pakistan in anyway, she needs to update and publish her resume for the perusal of her fans and some readers. A single message about the abduction and conversion of girls from minority religions to Islam in Pakistan, which is a regular occurrence, would be welcome. There is just silence. However, she is very vocal about the well being of the hockey team of Sindh.

Mehwish believes that there are negative stereotypes for Pakistan in Bollywood and even Hollywood. Priyanka, who played to a script which depicted Hindus as terrorists in her show Quantico would be bewildered. ‘What did I do wrong? That should have won every Pakistani, every Islamist heart’, Priyanka should studiously contemplate and possibly restrategize.

CNN seems to be too invested in criticism of Priyanka Chopra for her support to Indian army and by extension her support to India. Another Pakistani writer ‘Rafia Zakaria’ has already bashed Priyanka Chopra for the same reason. This esteemed citizen of Islamic state of Pakistan was very concerned about India becoming a Hindu state. Is there a need to explicitly state the irony here?

There is another petty theory. Pakistan is trying to induct their ladies into some of these aesthetically appealing UN roles for visibility and perceived leverage on the world stage. What better than a harmless pretty face attempting to pull a Princess Diana to further Pakistan’s agenda? The lady otherwise hardly known outside the Pakistani community used the opportunity, of Priyanka’s perceived slip, to give herself some traction which might get her Priyanka’s job of UN Goodwill ambassador, or something similar.

It might not work. Malala Yousafzai has already outlived her usefulness in that regard. There are no new messages and no diverse optics to bring to the table which have not already been milked to the hilt by Malala. Besides, one needs to be a Priyanka Chopra or an Arundhati Roy or an Amartya Sen to articulate a credible criticism on India about its multi-fold issues. Pakistan discrediting India and Indians would always be a wee bit too predictable for the international community. As a country, it is most unqualified to address universal human issues. In that light, her attempts seem totally injudicious and a tad desperate.

However, stranger things have happened. Malala has visited Japan to lecture a japanese audience on women empowerment. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a member of United Nations Human Right Council. It might happen that Mehwish Hayat is declared the sole authority on India and Kashmir; and be appointed as a UN goodwill ambassador for whatever excuse UN could cook up.

Note to Priyanka: Na ghar ki na ghaat ki. Is ambition bigger than your country and your people who have loved and supported you through everything? What makes you take them for granted? The Islamists hate your success; and your guts, when you show pride in your country and culture.

Subsequently, Pakistan Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari took to writing a letter to UN to have Priyanka Chopra immediately denotified from her role as a UN goodwill ambassador for Peace. The request was rejected, and Pakistan was denied even this miniscule gratification.

This letter, however, written by Pakistan Human Rights Minister to get an actress fired from the role of UN Goodwill Ambassador for Peace should be framed and displayed prominently in the Hall of Fame for International Embarrassment.

Afternote: Mehwish Hayat recently accused Bollywood of plagiarism in wake of Alia Bhatt’s recent music video with Punjabi song Prada. It bears resemblance to the Pakistani song ‘Gore Rang ka Zamana’. Since I was a little girl, many many many years ago, I have listened to this song and multiple versions of it. Is plagiarism even relevant now? Maybe for Mehwish, Alia Bhatt and the prospect of piggybanking makes it relevant. Maybe Pakistan’s ministry of Arts and Culture would write a letter to UNESCO.

Teacher’s day: One day of tokenism

0

It is Teacher’s Day today. September 5th, 2019.
And I am a teacher. Social media especially Facebook has status posts, comments, quotes and what have you on celebration of the day. Am I happy? Why not? I just wish, people who are so gung ho about the day today have this or at least a modicum of respect throughout the year.

I am a cynic I admit. So the over enthusiastic celebrations of any particular day leave me bemused. I do not get angry but I just wonder what purpose does a random day make? Isn’t this hypocrisy much? In a society, where success is measured by money, power and fame, teachers have no social prestige. I am not talking of valued Principals but an ordinary teacher. When you say you are a teacher, the kind of barely hidden disparagement says it all. Unless you work in a school, which is “known”, who cares?

Leave the society alone. Let us speak of our political leaders. The education sector hardly gets any budgetary funds. Out of those, most are watered down for proper building infrastructure and furniture, basic fixtures etc. How much is allocated for Teacher’s salaries.

Yes, we have the 7th Pay Commission according to wch salaries of Teacher’s is extremely good. But how many schools across the country have implemented this . Barely half a dozen private schools of Delhi. Not everyone has a government job. Down the Vindhyas , Vice Principal posts are advertised for a meagre 25000 p.m . PGTs get 15000 and I hardly have the heart to see the rest.
When one applies to a school, there is no uniformity in the salary pattern. It’s all a focus pocus “as per the school norms”. Pray, why so? The least the government can do is to make it mandatory for ALL SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY to pay as per 7th CPC. Yes, I am aware that it is a State subject, but what is the problem in having a inform salary structure? If you have the guts and ‘vision’ to remove Article 370, surely this is not impossible?

If not, then keep cribbing about low teaching standards in the interiors and keep getting amusement out of a teacher’s thick accent.

As for Teacher’s, if the Tokenism of one day makes you satisfied, I am happy for you all. But it makes me not merely dissatisfied but frustrated.

Why is teaching so often treated as a non profession? Why is a teacher regarded as a person who can be kicked around by authorities as well as parents? Why can’t a teacher tell the students to behave? Disciplining students with any word, deed or action is not permitted.

When will we really value our teachers? The profession which creates all others. When will they be genuinely respected?

When will our teachers earn enough for the work they do, viz, tteaching, classroom management, record keeping, corrections, setting papers, events organising and management and so much more….?

When will that day dawn when one does not need a Day to remember the contribution of the teachers, mentors and guides , but remembers them like one’s parents?

Tall order, I guess! Till the answers come, let me also wish myself, “Happy Teacher’s Day”.

100 days of Modi led NDA 2.0 govt

0

It’s been a 100 days since Modi Sarkar 2.0 was sworn in at an elaborate ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 30. In a bid to fulfill promises made in its 2019 Lok Sabha election manifesto, the government has taken some promising decisions.

Here are some of the highlights of the first 100 days report card of the Narendra Modi-led government’s second tenure spasht neeti, sahi disha:

1. The formation of Jal Shakti ministry, the mission to reach out to every house by 2024 with assured water supply.

2. The government also announced extension of its PM-KISAN scheme to include all eligible farmer families irrespective of the size of land holdings.

3. PM Narendra Modi had assured that within 100 days poor women of the country will be provided sanitary napkins at one rupee. Now, that has become a reality.

4. The revocation of the contentious Article 370 and Article 35A in a systematic and seamless manner which has not only blind sighted Pakistan but also flummoxed them in an unequivocal manner, the Prime Minister also spoken extensively about Kashmir.

5. Making Ladakh a UT and Ladakh celebrates its 1st Independence Day.

6. Triple Talaq Bill passage is a transformative point in India’s socio-political context.

7. Rs 100 lakh crore of investment to be made in roads, railways, ports, airports and other infrastructure.

8. The target of a five trillion dollar economy is not just a dream but a roadmap has been given for it.

9. Successful launch of Chandrayaan-2 and added that India’s manned mission to space, Gaganyaan, will be launched in 2022.

10. First session of the 17th Lok Sabha has been a record-creating one — it was the most productive session since 1952.

20. The rates of scholarship were increased and the ambit of the scholarship scheme was extended to the children of state police officials who were martyred during terror or Naxal attacks.

21. The New Motor Vehicle Act implemented by the Central Government in order to act as deterrence, as the number of roads deaths in India is very high and there is less number of people who truly abide by the traffic rules. We should respect the law and also fear the law.

22. He also visited Sri Lanka and the Maldives to improve the Neighborhood First policy.

23. He also strongly articulated India’s position against terror at the SCO Summit and also led the world in celebrating International Yoga Day.

24. Steps taken to spur investment and create new employment opportunities.

25. PM Narendra Modi is awarded with highest civilian honor of the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Afghanistan, Maldives, Bahrain and Modi address world economic forum as a chief guest, it’s a biggest honor for Nation.

“People have seen action on vision of New India. Farmers, soldiers, youth, laborer’s, middle class, traders, taking India forward, taking India’s relations with neighbors forward. Investment, development of resources, fight against corruption and social justice, have been the highlights of these 100 days”.

Coming to the main issue of economic slowdown:
The 5% growth, however disappointing it may be, is of the first quarter and not the whole year. With recent measures it is expected to bounce back to 6%+ in the next quarter. However, we cannot ignore the global slowdown. India cannot remain untouched by global woes.

In a first sign of government addressing the economic woes, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the removal of the surcharge on capital gains on shares for both foreign and domestic investors, provided an upfront Rs 70,000-crore equity infusion into public sector banks to boost lending, and unveiled measures to push automobile sales. Sitharaman said more policy measures will be taken in the next couple of weeks including for the housing sector. Govt announces mega bank mergers, the merging of a number of Public Sector Banks (PSB) in order to revive and revitalize the banking sector with the objective of achieving the $5-trillion economy target.

The government is taking measured steps to turn India into a $5 trillion economy by 2025 and work is in progress to double the farm income by 2022 among others.

Do you remember that blue-black mark you had on your finger a few months back? Yes, that very mark which took weeks to go. That mark wasn’t ordinary. It symbolized the best above decisions taken by govt which enhance many of our lives.

The traffic timebomb

0

A scene in the movie Anniyan (Hindi Aparichit) has its protagonist explain how apathy is a crime that should be punished and nowhere has apathy caused more damage than the traffic situation in the country today.

That traffic offences are not even considered a crime and some aspects of violations are considered brave and manly is why we have landed ourselves in such a mess. Traffic accidents in India kill about 150,000 people each year and about 300,000 are injured, critically or otherwise.

The cost of traffic problems is estimated to be 600K crore or approximately 90 Billion Dollars. One of the reasons people do not outrage over the numbers is because a veneer of innocence is always present in the minds of people while looking at an accident. That a minimum of one person is at wilful fault and is aware of it is almost always overlooked- have you ever heard of two people travelling at 40 Kmph and dying due to a crash? Very rarely or never at all.

Now going into what the major causes of traffic problems are and how we can play a role in remediating a time bomb that could explode on all of us

a) Over speeding: One of the biggest causes of accidents and road deaths is over speeding: This coupled with almost an obsession to not maintain a distance from the vehicle ahead of you is the biggest of causes of accidents. In many cases, I have seen passengers criticize the driver for “driving too slow.” Needless to remind the reader, the violator is aware of the fact that he is speeding. The biggest worry that I have is, drivers, seem to have no provision for the mistake of the other road users and do not factor that in while hitting the pedal.

b) Illegal driving: primarily, driving on the wrong side of the road, in roads where vehicular movement is prohibited, overtaking from the left, driving on footpaths (are there footpaths in India? I thought they are mostly shops), not following other traffic rules. Here too the driver knows what he is doing something illegal and we still call it an accident.

c) Driving under the influence of alcohol or other narcotics and psychotropic substances, if crimes involving this is labelled an accident, we are a banana republic. Also, we do not have effective means to detect levels of narcotics- the breath analyser is not sufficient.

d) Inadequate policing and infrastructure: We have the one of the worst police to people ratio; the ratio of traffic policemen to people is even more pathetic. The infrastructure is non-existent. Lack of electronic surveillance and registry is a major cause of why there is no instant punishment. There is also no rapid response unit and traffic crime-busting unit with a commando element to prevent violent traffic crimes.

e) Lenient Laws: there is no criminality attached to any traffic offence and the punishments are too benign and apologetic.

f) Indiscipline and no punishment for indiscipline: Lane driving is a fiction and snakes would be envious of what some vehicles can accomplish; likewise, parking on the roads restricts the capacity of the law severely. Laws against jaywalking need to be enforced.

Now moving to the possibility of how we as a society can evolve other than obviously not committing any of these

a) Stringent punishments bordering on the draconian:
(i) Drunken driving:

1) should be prosecuted as a criminal offence and tough provisions like Section 324 and 307 of the IPC should be added to the charge sheet for cases involving accidents.

2) For cases not involving accidents, the criminality should be retained and the punishment should be compulsory imprisonment.

3) The passport should be confiscated and foreign travel should be banned during the conduct of the proceedings and should continue one year post the sentencing.

4) Also, each offence of drunken driving should involve fines of Rs.100,000 or above. only electronic fines and close supervision on personnel will ensure that there is no or limited corruption

(ii) For over speeding, disobeying traffic signals and Illegal driving including driving on the wrong side, the punishment should be as follows:

1) Immediate suspension of license.

2) Fines in excess of 10,000 for first-time offenders; fines in excess of 20,000 for repeat offenders and imprisonment.

3) For cases involving accidents, criminal prosecution is a must to deter such behaviour.

4) For jaywalking, it has to be Rs.500 for each instance.

(iii) For other modes of traffic indiscipline which will not result in direct physical harm, the punishment will have to be monetary and stringent.

1) For illegal parking, it has to be 5% the cost of the vehicle for each offence.

b) Better supervision, electronic surveillance and electronic registry.

1) Increased surveillance and improved means including better infrastructure including but not limited to cameras, drones and other such technology

2) National Electronic registry will give instant information on the vehicle, rider/driver, their past offences etc

3) Surprise checks on known spots of danger or misbehaviour

c) Employer’s responsibilities:

1) Drivers employed by companies offering transport facility must be dismissed from service for any offence

2) Employees encouraging bad behaviour will be punished in proportion to their crime up to dismissal

3) Employees indulging in Drunken driving, over speeding or illegal driving will be instantly dismissed from employment

As this is only a blog post, I have not gone in greater than is necessary; my soon to be filed PIL will address each of these problems in greater detail. There are more traffic deaths in a year in India than all deaths due to terrorism ever

Welcome to the Space Age, Bharat!

0

07th September, 2019. The day will be definitely etched in the minds of Indians and the world. At a cost of ₹ 978 crores, the Chandrayaan – II, the lunar lander Vikram, which is scheduled to soft land on the dark side of the moon or the south pole after separating from the Chandrayaan – II Orbiter on entering the lunar orbit and the lunar rover Pragyaan, which is set to be deployed from the belly of Vikram after it lands on the dark side of the moon and conduct experiments using AI for a period of one lunar cycle or fourteen days, is absolutely unfathomable and impossible to any other country including USA and Russia, the pioneers of the space race.

In fact no other country has managed to land on the dark side of the moon. The reason as was explained by our scientists from ISRO is that to land on the South Pole the orbit should be a precise 90° and it is difficult to achieve such precision due to various external factors. As they said its easy to land anywhere else on the moon and may be that is why none of the other countries tried to land in that spot. And our scientists chose to try what everyone else couldn’t dare to try.

Not only that for the Chandrayaan – II to achieve the precise lunar orbit as it left the Earth’s orbit was in itself a maneauver requiring the exact amount of boost and trajectory without going off target even by a miniscule point, as the implications of being a single point off target meant the entire project would have gone off the rails. That they could achieve that speaks volumes about the preparation and readiness of these excellent scientists. The most unbelievable thing about this entire project, an apect as Indians we so dearly love, the movie Avataar was made on a budget almost twice that of Chandrayaan – II at a cost of ₹ 1600 and odd crores. That speaks volumes about the efficacy of our scientists. They are the true heroes in this mammoth undertaking of ours.

The Space programs in the US set of a boom in its economy, advancements in the field of science, medicine, technology and defence. There is something very magnetic about Space. We have as a race for all our technological advancements always been fascinated by Space. The reasons might be many. As space both scares and mocks us at the same time. The infinite space and the feeling of just being a tiny speck in the midst of humungous darkness and yet the magnetic pull to understand and the thrill it gives to learn about that infinite space.

Our Hindu scriptures are ripe with knowledge about different constellations and different planets and their effects on us. The “Panchangam” is all about the planetary positions and how they can be beneficial for a certain auspicious ceremony or ritual. We as a community have always been enamoured about space and have tried to understand it. We have scriptures explaining a lot about this but how did we come about all this knowledge, when the Space Age as we know began with the Russians in 1959, when they landed their first unmanned rocket on the moon. It took almost 10 years after that for the US to take the credit of the first manned mission to the moon.

The liberals in us might call it hogwash and superstitious beliefs. But then they will always find ways to disown their culture. They can’t deny this achievement though. The first lunar landing on the dark side of the moon. We have taken time to get there but we sure did and with a bang. Now we will surely see a rise in the way the world perceives us but more than that it will inspire the youth of this country to aim for the space. There will now be a boom that is set to be heard across the world as the lunar lander, Vikram sets its foot on the moon. There is no better inspiration than to see the success of these talented scientists, technical and non-technical staff, who all contributed in their own way, from my country achieving a humungous feat at a price that all other countries can only dream of. As we would always like to say the best and the most economical, made famous by a Maruti advertisement dialogue, “Mileage kitna deta hain?” during the briefing of a rocket launch.

Our scientists have truly proven their worth and mettle and so did all the other people, who were involved in various other capacities and we as a country salute you all. The fascination has now picked up momentum and that augurs well for the future of our country and its children. Now instead of faking to capture the moon in the palm of our hand or pointing at the distant moon while trying to lull babies into eating, we can actually show them the moon up close. That is the significance of this achievement. We have just set ourselves to finally understand the universe and space around us. Our attraction to the darkness around us will finally see some light as we scale further peaks in understanding it and as we are understanding it may be we will find the answers of how we got the knowledge of the space and Universe in our scriptures in the first place. The first step towards that understanding begins as Vikram sets its foot on Moon.

The possibilities are many but one thing is certain, we have announced our knowledge and skills to the world and now we need to back that up by improving in all fields. Because now we have reached the moon and the space is just ready to be discovered and marvelled at. That can only happen if we have a strong economy and a willing country. Now is the time to participate in this growth story my dear brothers and sisters as we aim for the space and the stars beyond them. Let us all contribute in our own way to this success story. Whether it’s by standing united or sticking to our principles! Whether it is by fighting with the dividers and the fear mongerers.

Let us all in one voice drown out the cacophony of negativity in the boom of positivity as we make our own little contributions. Remember, a country is it’s people and now is the time we let the world know, what the sons and daughters of Bharat are made of. Let us all join hands as we welcome the new Bharat. A Bharat which is looking to go to infinity and beyond. A Bharat whose children are inspired by the achievements of their parents and are in awe of our advancements. A Bharat which now says, Mars landing through Mangalyaan – II and manned mission to the Moon through Chandrayaan – III, here we come!

Jai Hind.

The recent decision by the Indian Air Force to purchase a dozen new Sukhoi 30MKIs and 21 new Mig 29 UPG aircraft, clubbed with its decision not to upgrade the Jaguar ground-attack fighters, signals a decisive shift in the IAF’s thinking.

At present, the Indian Air Force has around 30 fighter aircraft squadrons, including 11 frontline Sukhoi 30MKI squadrons, three Mirage 2000H squadrons based in Gwalior, six Jaguar squadrons based in Ambala, Jamnagar and Gorakhpur, three Mig 29UPG squadrons based in Adampur and Jamnagar, a Tejas Mk1 squadron based in Sulur, two Mig 27UPG squadrons based in Jodhpur, and seven Mig 21 squadrons operating from Pathankot, Srinagar, Barmer, Sirsa, Jodhpur, and Suratgarh.

In addition to this, IAF will soon raise the second squadron of LCA Mk1 in Sulur Air Force base which is attached to the Southern Air Command and will also raise two new Sukhoi 30MKI squadrons once HAL completes deliveries of additional fighters that were contracted in 2010.

It is possible that one of the freshly-raised Sukhoi 30MKI squadrons could be based in the brand new Deesa Air Force base in Gujarat. The Cabinet Committee on Security had greenlighted the construction of the base in March last year at a cost of around Rs 1000 crore. The base will be spread over 4000 acres and will also house blast-proof pens for fighter aircraft.

The new base will also boost the IAF’s presence in the vicinity of Karachi as two Mig 21 squadrons based in the nearby Naliya air force base have been decommissioned recently. Jamnagar, the other fighter base in Gujarat, is currently home to two squadrons of Jaguars and one squadron of Mig 29UPG. Deesa AFB will also be located quite close to Nal air force base near Bikaner which is home to Sukhoi 30MKI fighters.

17 squadron (Golden Arrows), which until recently flew Mig 21M fighters, will soon receive a squadron of brand new Rafale jets and will shift from Bathinda to Ambala. To make way for it, 3 squadron (Cobras), one of the few remaining Mig 21 squadrons, will shift from Ambala to Nal AFB near Bikaner.

22 squadron (Swifts), which is based in Hasimara in West Bengal and until recently operated the now-decommissioned Mig 27ML fighters, will also receive a squadron of Rafale jets and will operate alongside a Su-30MKI squadron based in Tezpur to guard India’s frontiers in the North East.

If the government approves the IAF’s fresh requirement of a dozen new Sukhoi 30MKIs and 21 new Mig 29UPG aircraft, while the new Su-30 MKIs will join existing squadrons as the IAF only intends to purchase them to cover for fighters lost to crashes in the past decade, IAF will be able to set up a new Mig 29UPG squadron to facilitate the decommissioning of existing Mig 21 squadrons in the next couple of years.

The acquisition of these fighters will not only help the IAF replenish its fighter squadrons to an extent, but will also ensure that it will not add new aircraft types in its inventory. Considering that IAF pilots and ground crews have gained much experience with Su-30MKI and Mig-29UPG fighters, the purchase of these types will not require additional expenditure on training or in setting up maintenance depots as well.

However, IAF’s decision not to upgrade the existing six squadrons of Jaguar ground attack aircraft with powerful Honeywell F-125IN engines has raised concerns about the further depletion of IAF’s fighter squadrons. The upgrade programme was expected to increase the aircraft’s power, range and longevity but has been shelved because of high cost as well as the time required to develop the new engine and to integrate it with the aircraft.

Nevertheless, HAL is presently upgrading 56 Jaguar fighters to DARIN-III standard which includes a new AESA radar, a new electronic warfare suite, new avionics and multi-function displays. This programme will ensure that even if IAF starts decommissioning Jaguars from 2023 onwards, at least three squadrons of the same will remain operational beyond 2030.

Hence, if the IAF does not make any further acquisitions until 2030, which is unlikely considering that the MMRCA requirement could be fulfilled by then, this is how its fighter and close air support compliment will look like:

Su-30MKI: 14 squadrons
Rafale: 2 squadrons
Jaguar: 3 squadrons
Mig 29UPG: 4 squadrons
Mirage 2000H: 3 squadrons
LCA mk1: 2 squadrons
TOTAL: 28 squadrons

What this indicates is that the IAF will manage to keep its number of fighter squadrons more or less intact while also discarding completely obsolete aircraft in its inventory such as the Mig 21 Bison and the Mig 27UPG. However, if the government does not torpedo the proposed MMRCA acquisition of 114 aircraft unlike how the previous acquisition process progressed, the number of fighter squadrons could reach 34 by the end of next decade.

If the MMRCA deal goes through and the government also buys 12 new Su-30MKIs and 21 Mig 29UPGs for the IAF, the likes of HAL and other agencies like the ADA will also get enough time to develop the proposed Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) which could replace the likes of Jaguar, Mirage 2000H, Mig 29UPG, and Su-30MKIs from 2035 onwards.

As far as the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme is concerned, even though HAL has succeeded in delivering a squadron of the type to the IAF so far and will deliver another squadron of FOC standard by 2020, the proposed contract for an additional 83 LCA Mk1As has already reached a dead-end.

The reason for this is both costs as well as capability. As far as capability is concerned, Business Standard has reported that HAL took a unilateral decision to purchase Israeli Elta AESA radar for the Tejas Mark 1A even though MBDA, the European manufacturer of Meteor missiles, had made it clear that it will not integrate its missiles with a non-European AESA radar system.

The report further underlines that IAF had laid down five specific modifications to be incorporated in LA Mk1A when agreeing to purchase 83 numbers of the same in 2016. These included an advanced AESA radar, the 250 km-range Meteor missile, as well as ASRAAM (Advanced Short Range Air to Air Missile).

The report states that HAL chose Elta’s ELM 2052 AESA radar for LCA Mk1A as the same radar is being incorporated into 61 Jaguar fighters and therefore, producing the radar in large numbers would save a lot of money. However, this move also ensures that LCA Mk1A will not get the Meteor and it is thus of no surprise that the IAF has not signed the final contract for 83 LCA Mk1As as yet.

According to the Economic Times, IAF has also informed the government that HAL has not been able to comply with “the endurance levels or the amount of time for which the aircraft can fly” as stipulated in its RFP.

As far as cost is concerned, HAL is asking as much as 463 crore for each LCA Mk1A aircraft and the same is being considered as prohibitively high both by the MoD as well as the IAF. According to The Times of India, HAL may have finally agreed to reduce the per-unit price to between 250 crore and 275 crores, thereby reducing the overall cost of 83 fighters from Rs 37,350 crore to Rs 22,825 crore. Does this mean that the IAF has agreed to accept the LCA Mk1A without the option of Meteor missiles? Only time will tell.

If the existing logjam around the LCA programme is resolved between the government, IAF and HAL and the latter is given enough time to deliver 83 LCA Mk1As to the IAF by 2030, then the IAF’s fighter squadron numbers could touch 38 squadrons, provided of course that the government also manages to acquire 114 multi-role medium fighters for the IAF in the meantime.

This is how the final squadron numbers for the IAF will look like if things go as planned:

Su-30MKI: 14 squadrons
MMRCA: 6 squadrons
Rafale: 2 squadrons
Jaguar: 3 squadrons
Mig 29UPG: 4 squadrons
Mirage 2000H: 3 squadrons
LCA mk1: 2 squadrons
LCA Mk1A: 4 squadrons
TOTAL: 38 squadrons

Mr. Tharoor, you are wrong! You did farrago of xenophobia and infiltration

0

After recent developments on the NRC, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor jumped in and quoted Rabindranath Tagore and compared the action taken by NRC as xenophobic. In addition, this quote also mentioned that this can turn into the hate for the Indians from other states. However, it is another matter that this quote was never been said by Tagore and had no mention in any primary source, expect Guha’s book and that too is secondary source.

Here, prominent word-smith, Shashi Tharoor, did farrago of xenophobia and infiltration and it is necessary that he should learn about the difference between this two.

Xenophobia literally means hate for foreign culture and people. And the final listing by NRC is not the case of Xenophobia. First, it listed only those people who failed to give proof about their citizenship. Second, no businessperson, student or scholar from foreign nation is not supposed to be thrown out by government. Third, India is not the developed country of migrants and thus, it should take the lead for rehabilitation. Now, let me allow to explain in the details.

My first point is people who failed to give proof about their citizenship of this republic has been listed by the NRC. It is another matter that there are incidents of errors and eerie mistakes but they are minor. And if listing people for not providing citizenship is a case of xenophobia (per Tharoor) then Rajiv Gandhi should be declared as xenophobic because he was the PM when India signed the treaty with AASU to list the people who are living illegally. Also, Indira Gandhi was the PM when she said that Bangladeshi refugees has to go back to their country on one day. Ergo she must be xenophobic as per definition of Tharoor. However, I endorse Shashi Tharoor for openly taking stand against Gandhi family.

Second point is no legal businessperson, student or scholar from foreign nation has been supposed to be thrown out of India as part of xenophobia. Xenophobic government or people can’t even tolerate this people as it happened during rule of Idi Amin in Uganda when 80,000 Indian people had to flee from the country. This is not the case here, this makes your arguments weak! No other foreigners are feeling unsafe in India just because of these actions because they know that they are not next.

Third and last point is that India is developing country and continuous civilisation, not any random country of migrants which was developed by colonists and migrants. We have our own sort of problems and simply, we can’t take responsibility of other people living illegally in our country and giving burden on our country.

Xenophobia is a serious issue and it needs to be addressed well in contemporary times but that doesn’t mean we can’t sent illegal refugees living in our country to back their home. In a nutshell, I just want to say that Shashi Tharoor did farrago of the xenophobia and infiltration. He is deliberately trying to oppose the move of NRC on lines of his party by exasperating farrago of distortions, misrepresentations and outright lies even though it is against actions of predecessors of his party.

Investigation of PC, vendetta politics or part of Ram Dharma

The opposition parties along with so called liberal journalists and so claimed sole owners of secularism in India often allege that the investigation and subsequent arrest of former home and finance minister of India for interrogation in connection with money laundering case in INX media case where several visible trails of money is been reported to have obtained from the custody of Kartik Chidambaram, son of the former home and finance minister of India, P Chidambaram.

We must remember the famous saying “Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion”. From that perspective, P Chidambaram should have shown more grace and maturity to willingly submit him to the investigating agencies if he believes he is innocent and the case against him is part of political vendetta. P Chidambaram being a lawyer as well should give him confidence that any case if foisted against him as a part of political vendetta will not sustain in court of law. When Tehelka controversy broke out, LK Advani immediately quit and promised the world that he would come back to politics only after proving his innocence. When Narendra Modi and Amit Shah were tortured so badly by the then congress dispensation, both Modi and Amit Shah co-operated fully with the investigating agencies, proved their innocence not only in the court of law but also with people of India at large and that is how PM Modi got massive mandate both in 2014 and also in 2019. Even in 2024 also PM Modi would even bigger mandate as his governance is free of corruption, nepotism, and dynastic politics and is fully focused on development, sab ka vikas and sab ka vishwas.

BJP and PM Modi not just follow the political ideologies of BJP and are after political mileage but believes, follows and promotes the sacred Indian culture and tradition called Hindu sanadana dharma. Lord Ram waged war against Ravan and finally killed the demon king of Lanka.  Ravan was a demon king, merciless and brute was known to all. Further Ravan also abducted mother Sita, the wife of Lord Ram. Can we reduce the entire essence and spirit of Ramayan written by sage Valmiki also as political vendetta of Lord Ram against Ravan? Even if Ravan had not abducted mother Sita, the incarnation of Lord Ram was to destroy the demon king Ravan and grant him moksha. Similarly the purpose of Lord Krishna was also to annihilate adharma and untruth from earth. Lord Krishna too was subjected to several travesties by Kamsa and many of his associates.  Therefore can we reduce the avatar secret of Lord Krishna who killed Kamsa too was nothing but political vendetta

Whenever adharma grows without any limit and control, whenever greed maul good governance and yield to rampant corruption and nepotism, whenever coalition compulsion give way for several allegations like 2G, coal allocation, CWG, Adharsh etc., and when helpless people yawns for a change, the incarnation of Lord become a necessity.

If an ordinary citizen makes an over cry over any such investigation can be some extent justifiable as he or she has to fight as an individual. But the person like P Chidambaram is part of an important political party in India, he is quite influential and himself is also a brilliant lawyer. Therefore where is the scope for P Chidambaram to run after anticipatory bail and make war cry that the initiatives against him as part of political vendetta/conspiracy?

Need of the hour is not mere cleaning up of the system and de-weeding of all corrupt elements but a spiritual awakening and consciousness also we need to bring in our country. The mythological and vedic values will certainly impart not only confidence but also clarity to most of actions and give scope for introspection and corrections.
