We Architects deserve the supreme court decision on Architectural practice

We have been so thankful for the Architect’s act that we have adopted dutiful silence as a mark of submission of fraternity and we accept anything and everything that “Council of Architecture” throws at us with absolute indifference and silence.

Council of Architecture has two jobs i.e. to maintain a register of Architects and to regulate the education of Architects. Practicing Architects until the Supreme court’s decision were indifferent to daily affairs of COA but since apex court’s decision that only “Architect” title is protected, everything that we thought belongs to us is up for grabs.

The very premise of education that all the rigor and time of 5 years is just to keep a title does not seem justified anymore? Where things have gone wrong? To answer this question first we must answer a few more questions? The politicians who take decisions at COA, are answerable to whom? Is there any accountability for wrong policy decisions?

Who decides and influences the policy decisions at Council, for example, political parties have public election manifesto? When things go wrong, what is at stake for those behind wrong decisions?

Supreme court’s decision that anybody can practice Architecture has shocked many young Architects, but our newly elected President has already said that it does not impact much on employability of Architects since they have superior training, regulations, etc.? Since many Senior Architects have their fate sealed with their practice and career, they see it as a minor niggle, but looking from the perspective of young graduates, it may give them a midlife crisis by robbing off all the confidence they may have in the profession they chose for themselves.

Suddenly young graduates realized all that they have is the title “Architect” where commoners many times pronounce them as “Engineer”. Irony? Effect of the supreme court’s decision on norms governing professional’s qualification in building bye-laws, NBC still remains to be seen.

The Decision-makers at the Council of Architecture, are state and central govt. nominees, IIA elected individuals, and elected heads of institutions. Elected members from IIA are supposed to be representing the practicing Architects, while Govt. Nominees are either Govt. employed Architects or influential Architects nominated as a state representative in Council.

All these people then elect President and Vice President and other five members which constitutes the seven-members Executive committee which is the apex decision making body of COA responsible for all the decisions in the Council notwithstanding the President has a great role in steering the committee.

Where things have gone wrong?

Most of the decisions Council takes are related to the education policy of Council, while practice-related matters are routine work, except the court cases that Council has been drawn into or has willingly taken up to protect its interest. Most of the concerns that practicing fraternity has raised with the council are related to fake practices or misuse of “Title” and with the apex court’s decision, all such complaints will now directly go to the dustbin, instead of waiting in some file.

Policing of education matters interests Council most because it is the seed that causes the tree called Architect and services provided by it. Education also interests council most because it is easily its best source of income and the Council enjoys a lot of power in overseeing these institutions.

After the enactment of the 1972 Architect’s act, in 1983 minimum standards of architecture education regulations came into existence and till now act has not been amended by the Parliament, so legally 1983 norms remain in force till today.

Despite that Council has amended and floated regulations at various intervals which they justified as appropriate. In all these amended regulations the prime focus remained with balancing the qualifications of Architecture faculties teaching in various institutes all across India.

Every amendment in these norms remained majorly about faculty qualification with the infrastructure required in relation to the intake of institutes. These norms seemed to be inspired and driven by stock markets that every time revised they must only increase and lead to a higher value than last revision, also meanwhile COA kept on granting affiliations to more and more institutions and intake thereby generating a wide gap between qualified teachers available and required.

This lead to a degree hopping spree, first it was about the master’s degree and later Ph.D.’s became fad since COA started recommending Ph.D. as one of the requirements.

The majority of practitioners were left to their fate, assuming mostly they have a limited role of visiting faculty at the institutes. These teachers were driven by the new demands COA raised each year and institutes offering masters degrees and Ph.D.’s got their new customers, the stock market of Architecture education was rising.

All this while curriculum of B.Arch. was rarely revised and made relevant to changing dynamics of practice, so all the studio research was outsourced to degrees of faculties, and assumptions were made that these brand new degrees were enough to ensure innovations in classrooms.

Architectural education was now taking its worst turn, the gap between practice and education became even wider and research in Masters and even in Ph.D.’s were only for showcase and never to see the litmus test of publication. All the Architecture books were anyway supplied by foreign authors and the English mode of education was ever more convenient, almost like a nexus.

The teachers were now behaving like employees of Council and not independent thinkers, they were overqualified job seekers and nothing else. The disconnect of practice and education was now much more prominent and showing its impact in practice as well. The disease was fast spreading.

Everyone was docile with no opinions. Mediocrity begets mediocrity became true. Who would question the powerful Council now? And this is exactly where it all started taking a turn towards worst? Mediocrity in thought process was now apparent in elected leadership of Council, now they were looking for a villain for this downfall. They concluded, of course! it’s the institutions.

Now they were looking to artificially close the institutions by controlling the number of students applying in B.Arch. Degree each year, a simple aptitude test happening each day at institutes as per the convenience of students was reinvented as grand test at national scale happening only once, not realizing the calendar was already packed with other entrance tests. This lead to a clash of dates and friendly fire between examinations.

We were staring at a major crisis now, most of the institutions all across India were Vacant, some scored zero admissions, not able to withstand pressure policy makers resorted to innovative solutions at its best, the decision-makers decided to increase the number of tests to twice in a year and also decided to sell the confidential data of students, solution at last!

In the NATA brochure the President himself explained that NATA is an Aptitude test and despite that he failed to realize, it is so for a reason. Who will explain to them now, Council had successfully reduced the number of brains to zero, especially in its most prized possession, the teachers.

And then came Supreme court decision.

The President announced, its no matter at all, even though inside we all knew, we have become hollow. Webinars after webinars were arranged to assuage our concerns.

We all were at fault, at least we could question the past actions and decisions, but the silence was golden, everyone was busy fulfilling their duties, be it academics or practice, no one was free or interested enough to question and those who raised questions were patronized into silence by loyalists and courtiers or trying to be.

All of us who gave our fate in hands of those without even questioning our contracts with them are responsible.

Least we could do was to raise questions and demand clear answers.

Modi govt vis-a-vis Bengal politics: What can a policy of ‘endless patience’ deliver?

How good is it to read a ‘parable’ as a preamble to a political article? The reader’s indulgence is being sought hoping that in rare cases it may be profitable to do so to get a new perspective on how the ruling regime in the centre has been dealing with those in some states that tend to, more often than not, choose to defy its instructions, advisories, and urging. The parable goes like this.

The parable

One morning, a man narrated to his neighbour a terrible event that happened at his home the previous night. ‘You won’t believe it’, his face reflected emotions of shock, bereavement and surprise, ‘a thief had entered my bedroom at about 12 ‘0 clock in the night. Just imagine. I was sure that many in the neighborhood were not asleep by then! Even I was awake. But he gave a damn! I was just watching his audacity, you see ‘ The neighbor grew excited: ‘We were very much awake. Why didn’t you just raise a cry? We would have rushed in no time.’ The man pacified him, ‘B’coz I wanted to see how far he coud go. I was just pretending I am asleep but watching his every action through corner of my eyes. And you won’t believe, that wretch came and slipped his hand beneath my pillow and took the almirah keys! Still I did not catch him. I only wanted to see the limit of his misadventure.’ The neighbor now stood on one leg on excitement: ‘then?’.

The man resumed, ‘Then, that fellow opened the almirah and collected all cash and jewelries in one bed sheet and tied it securely. Can you believe it?’. After a pause, he resumed, ‘But I was giving him a long rope, after all how far could he dare to go?’ The neighbor was almost exasperated: ‘you still did not get up and catch him by his collar?’ The man cast a philosophic look at him and resumed with a heavy sigh: ‘No. I thought good sense will rise in him before I gave him a sound thrashing. But you know what! He just did not bother a wee bit. He then opened the door and went out with all my valuables. I could have taught him a lesson for his lifetime. I even had a license gun but did not take it out. I was just looking at that wretch’s sheer audacity!’

Decency & Dignity at the cost of Diligence & Duty?

Some well-meaning critics of the ruling regime at the centre may be tempted to warn it against treading a path similar to the ‘man’ in the parable vis-a-vis few regimes ruling the states, especially by its political opponents. They are keenly aware of the fact that the present regime at the centre values decency, dignity and adherence to constitutional propriety and a penchant for those values may be prompting it to pursue it a kind of complete ‘laissez faire’ policy vis-a-vis the states, even when intervention is called for in wider public interest.

Such a policy towards states, these critics argue, cost the ruling party a few states such as Rajasthan, Chattishgarh, Madhya Pradesh (since regained) and Rajasthan which were earlier ruled by it. However, the focus here remains on states ruled by its political opponents, West Bengal in particular.

The reservation of the Centre’s well-meaning critics stems from the perception that its policy has been of absolute non-interference. They worry that consistent unwillingness to impose consequences on its recalcitrant political opponents ruling some states who are trying to undo several of its key initiatives for the benefit of the nation is dangerous for the country. In the process it is allowing its opponents to rob it of its own political capital, which it will be hard put to recover. The strategy of its adversary in West Bengal is a good example.

Open defiance of the Centre

Amongst key nation building initiatives that the ruling regime at the centre has taken since 2014 are included Jandhan yojana, demonetization, GST, and Citizenship Amendment Act. All these measures were adopted in accordance with constitutional norms. However, the ruling regime in West Bengal criticized each of them. In last 3 cases it went to the extent of inciting people of the state against the Centre’s move. As a matter of fact, the deep antagonism generated against these visionary and nationalist initiatives in this state had later spread to few more opposition-ruled states, while the ruling regime at the centre just kept waiting for good sense to return to its rivals.

That did not happen. On the contrary, protests against CAA were sought to be aggravated by voicing imaginary fear of Assam-type NRC. Even NPR was resisted. In unprecedented move since independence, few opposition-ruled states passed resolutions in  respective legislative assemblies against an Act passed in the parliament of the country.

Political violence – a beneficiary of ‘laissez faire’ approach?

The defiance against the centre in the state extends in the form of ruthless suppression of political opponents. The Panchayat elections in West Bengal in 2018 witnessed unprecedented violence involving death of one dozen political workers on the very day of the election. The violence and retribution continued post poll and claimed several more lives. In nearly one-third of total seats, the opposition parties in the state were not able to file nominations for their candidates. The gravity of the violence  reflected from the fact that the Election Commission had to hold the Lok Sabha elections in the state in 2019 in 8 phases. According to media reports, the election was still bloody and rigged in wide swathes involving several booths making a mockery of democracy. But the Centre’s ruling party kept waiting for good sense to return in the party ruling the state!

Shaheenbagh- the lesson that was not learnt?

The well-meaning critics of the ruling party at the centre wonder if such a policy of endless patience benefits the nation or even the party itself politically! For example, it seemed to have been waiting endlessly at Shaheen bagh in Delhi. though It could have easily tackled what was essentially a law and order issue to the relief of lakhs of citizens who were tormented for few months. Instead there was an attempt to get a solution through the apex court.

What was the reason for its unwillingness to take decisive action? Probably waiting for good sense to return to the ruling party in the state. The other plausible explanation is that it had reckoned the public angered by their long sufferings, would teach AAP, the party ruling the state, a good lesson. But an astounding repeat victory by that party, despite its poor governance for five long years, conveys a serious political lesson. This immense verdict could be as well interpreted as reflection of public anger at the policy of endless patience and dereliction of duty on the part of the party ruling at the centre even though it was in position of complete authority to give relief to people.

Fighting Covid-19 in West Bengal- the role of the Centre

The latest issue is about fighting Covid-19 in West Bengal. There are media reports that speak about suppression of facts by the state machinery relating to the pandemic like the numbers of cases of infection and death. There are also reports that reveal worrying unpreparedness to tackle the pandemic in such a densely populated, economically impoverished state. Several political parties are levying charges against the ruling regime of the state of political corruption in distributing ration and using lockdown selectively for furthering partisan political interests.

Can the ruling regime at the centre remain unaffected by what happens in that state? Keeping sections of people hungry could be burst the dam of patience leading to a major law and order issue in the state, while selective implementation of lockdown could endanger the whole nation through spread of the pandemic. But again, the ruling regime at the Centre seems to be waiting for good sense to return in the party ruling the state.

Well-meaning critics of the Centre are keeping their fingers crossed. Will the policy of endless patience and unwillingness to take any drastic action help tackling the grave pandemic? Or, would it be like the action of ‘the man in the parable’, that threatens to snatch away all the political capital it has built up in the state over several years?

Is novel coronavirus ‘super intelligent’ or ‘stupid’ – evolutionary science will defeat our medical approach and lockdown

We need to dwell more into the evolutionary theories associated with endemic, epidemic and the medically coined term called pandemic in the present context; instead of we running after novel coronavirus to stop it from spreading or we attempt to escape from the virus that is chasing us multi-dimensionally. Encounter, not escape is the way.

Even if we have to believe the ancestor of novel coronavirus is the one that found in bat and pangolin, still it tells the same story that novel coronavirus cannot be eliminated from our society because it has not yet identified its definite host or it may be on its way to become extinct.

The theory around the origin of novel corona from bat, the host-shift and rapid spread of the virus in pandemic proportion among people all over the world clearly suggests that both the ‘social gene’ of the virus and the anxiety & restlessness of the virus to establish its terminal host may be in all probability causing great concern to human being.

The theory over the origin of novel coronavirus from the one that found in Pangolin also suggests only the above hypothesis.

Bats are social mammals. Although they may not exhibit clear social hierarchy, division of labour or eusocial behaviour, but still they follow communal roosting pattern which makes them look social from the perspective of viral spread from one animal to other in the given bat colony. Further, bats never follow ‘social distancing norms’, are polygamous and promiscuous and such behaviour in all probability shall only favour the spread of virus. Such spread may have further favoured the virus to choose its habitat to be bat.  This may be reason for the popular presumption that the grandparent (s) our novel coronavirus may be the one present in bat.

In contrast, pangolin is a solitary mammal. If the virus harbours in pangolin, it has the necessity to stay with its host, adapt and become obligate because getting another animal to shift its host is limited from pangolin. The above statement is made in the context where no human intervention in involved.

If the end host of novel coronavirus is human, then the virus would not have followed the behaviour of ‘generalist’ virus, spread across human population in different geography, equally.

From the evolutionary standpoint, the virus may be anxious and agitated as it has not yet identified its final host. The struggle of the virus to exist is what the real struggle ‘WE’ the human being may be enduring today.

Are we preventing the virus to escape from human being or are we facilitating the virus to exist with human being, thorough the lockdown and isolation?

Why the above question is very significant and relevant scientifically and medically is because of the ‘supra-generalist’ ‘omnipresent’ transmission pattern of the virus.

When a virus spreads so fast across all geography, human race, climatic conditions means…….., we also must look at the problem from microbiology and evolutionary science than seeing through the narrow optics of medicine, patient care and treatment.

If our focus were limited only to COVID 19, then our problem will have different scientific footing. But the whole world is testing people for coronavirus positivity. Ironically, large number of positive cases of coronavirus either fails to show any signs and symptoms of the disease or show very mild symptoms and with or without any great medical intervention, turns negative for the virus in due course of time.

Alongside, another population also exist and exhibit all signs and symptoms of the infection – COVID-19 and some dies?

When the viral transmission is so pandemic, how come the disease manifestation and death are highly restricted to certain individuals with definite co-morbidity conditions? How the same virus could spread all over the world barring all basic tenets of evolution and final selection of a host?

Another funny question also we must ask for the sake enhancing our evolutionary wisdom. Is coronavirus stupid or very intelligent?

The first assumption is that the coronavirus may be stupid. If the virus is still searching for its final host and it is not necessarily the human being means, why it should try out humans in every country to reach its ultimate host? Does that exercise not so costly for the virus from the evolutionary point of view?

Let us assume the coronavirus may be extraordinary intelligent. The easiest and the most abundantly available host for any virus is human being. So the virus may be ploughing through its way, trying to understand different human race and then may select its final host.

When variety and options are available in plenty, why should the virus miss such chance, worrying much about the cost involved in selecting its ultimate host?

If the above such natural selection approaches only novel coronavirus is trying means, we have more to worry and celebrate? Any species follows such rigorous natural selection cannot remain generalist virus anymore, at best, it can remain only as specialist or obligatory and death of the host under such circumstances is less likely.

Whatever be the evolutionary reason, the virus has selected human being to conduct its experiment. The big question is will the nationwide lockdown dissuade such determined, smart virus?

Our confusion is compounded more due to our fear than patience and pragmatism.

Viral spread and COVID 19, we must learn to see separately and independently. We should provide best medical support to COVID 19 patients and should not make too much jigsaw over coronavirus positivity.

In all likelihood the coronavirus may visit every Indian with or without our knowledge, with or without any clinical symptoms. Alongside and along with us, coronavirus is also going to live until it finds its ultimate host or may to perish.

We must ease the life of people. During malaria and Dengue season, we know every mosquito that bites doesn’t either carry or transmit the parasite or virus. Similarly every malaria or dengue patient is not going to die. When death is inevitable, dying cannot be stopped. Let us be a bit philosophical than medical or cynical, realize the truth that lockdown is not going to stop either the spread of the virus or those vulnerable group developing COVID 19. What matter for India is, life and livelihood and strong measures to build our economy from the ruin.

Let us not chase coronavirus, learn viral mutation in co-morbid environment to prevent more deadly virus to emerge

Blame none; develop endure all threshold; only people of India can practice today.

Because by blaming Modi Indians cannot achieve anything and Indians may have to live inside the lockdown chamber, may be till 2024. Blaming Modi is equal to blaming our destiny because WE the people of India only elected him with astounding majority for the second time to play the emotional game called lockdown; for our safety.

Novel coronavirus is reported to mutate fast and hence a vaccine to develop against such fast mutating virus is not that easy. Further the fast mutation of the virus also helps the virus to escape the immunity.

From the evolutionary standpoint, the virus may be mutating rapidly because it has not yet identified and equilibrated its host. The host-virus harmony has not happened.

According to the observation of WHO, asymptomatic carriers of the virus are less infectious than symptomatic carriers and those fully infected individuals or COVID 19 patients. The shedding rate of virus by people is extremely high during their early stage of viral invasion i.e., more from the upper respiratory tracts such as nostril and throat than from lungs.

When such is the situation, the most important question is whether the spread of the virus is to be worried the most or the possible beneficial mutation of virus in certain hosts if such event were happening should be the serious concern?

Or else, we should phrase the above question reversely, that is, is the fast mutating virus less harmful than the one that mutate less?

In co-morbid conditions, in all likelihood the mutation rate of the virus will be less.  On the contrary, in healthy individuals (without any listed co-morbid conditions and age predilection support) the rate of mutation of the virus can be expected to be quite high. The above statement is only a scientific speculation grounded with common sense and not with any experimental proof or clinical evidence.

If the above speculation were true (looks like might be true), whom we should really worry the most? Is it not those who show all classic signs and symptoms of COVID 19 the most dangerous; both dangerously infected and equally infectious to others in the community?

If the above were true, the hospitalized patients are in danger as well as dangerous to the community by way of spreading the virus which might have poor rate of mutation and well adapted to human environment. In other words, more pathogenic to our society.

When such virus enters another host, its infectivity can be higher than the one in circulation among general population. Does that not mean co-morbid conditions alone favour either no mutation or only beneficial mutation in virus to select its host?

If we apply the above scientific possibility, are we not going to have two or more different mutants of the virus one being more pathogenic and the other being less pathogenic? Which of the above one we are preventing from spreading through lockdown?

No mutation or more mutation of novel coronavirus, whichever may favours the virus, should we not understand and also the role of the environment (human host) that favours the beneficial trade-off of the virus? All speculations points towards co-morbid conditions to the precursor and not those healthy people (free from any of the listed co-morbid conditions).

Time has come our epidemiologists, evolutionary biologists, microbiologists, medical fraternity and policy makers must pool their thoughts and bring a practical solution to the problem of lockdown. The novel coronavirus that is yet to adapt in human host and the one that has reasonably adapted in human host variants both are likely to be in circulation in our country.  The question is will these two mutants cross-over to each other when they get a chance to co-exist in same host?  Will such cross-over-ed strain going to be more deadly?

From the academic pedestal we can go on ask several such questions. But the solution to the crisis is far from near.

If the novel coronavirus were true or primary pathogen, then the rationale of lockdown can be accepted, adopted and justified because no other option is left with to control and contain the spread of the virus.  But the novel coronavirus is a secondary pathogen. Therefore susceptible and resistant group is going to co-exist in our country and so shall the virus is also going to live with us.

In our experimental understanding, a few lives we may have to lose. The question of who are those sacrificial goats is not our choice and only novel coronavirus alone has the last say.

We have to save the country from economic destruction, gory of poverty and penury, hunger and starvation, civil war like condition, cannibalism, loss of employment, unemployment and above all the fear of death from all the above factors along with novel coronavirus.

Whether people would develop herd immunity or not, but will develop sufficient confidence and courage to take on the virus after the lockdown. The poor virus is left with nothing but again mutate. Who knows, some of such mutation (s) can be harmful as well to the virus.

Life and livelihood are inseparable and exclusively dependent in country like India. But cutting livelihood of people, we would only favour the virus and not human life in India. We have to challenge the virus in open field and not from ‘Lockdown Township’. At the end man alone shall win, because man has been winning wars against all such pathogens in the last 200 00 to 300 300 years ever since Homo sapiens got evolved.

Its only when the real becomes one with the unreal that stars are born. But, is it actually as seamless at it seems? Well, like any other profession, acting also comes to those who strive to make it happen. While most of you might take this statement with a grain of salt, the gospel truth is that acting makes you lose your identity. The finer an actor you are, the better you are at authentically empowering others by exposing your vulnerabilities.

People view an artist’s through the lens of the characters he or she portrays on the silver screen. Therefore, all actors with the ability of becoming one with the character become heart-throbs.

For a long time, I harboured the notion that all spectacular performances that fuel Indian cinema are the preserve of god-gifted actors. But, off late, I have discovered that there is a common thread that connects exemplary artists- Gandhian ideology of simple living and high thinking. Needless to say, majority of those who have carved their niche in the film industry are from humble backgrounds and have always upheld the values they espoused. For these incredibly passionate artists, no role is outside the realm of possibility as long as the script resonates with their values. This has been proved, time and again, by the justice that these actors have done with their roles by lending an air of gravitas to the character through their acting.

As the entire nation mourns the loss of Irfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that no matter how inevitable death is, when artists of such stature embrace it, they leave a vacuum behind. In an industry inundated with talent, not everyone gets to become the mainstay.

Post Corona: Arrival of new juggernaut called Sanatan

While the fight against Covid is at its peak with reported death of over 2 lac of individual in and around the world, the optimism and positivity has not subsided among the Sanatan followers. You get up in morning to flip through the social media update or surf the news channel, and would be devastated at the plight of humanity, helplessness of wealth, splendor of yesterday.

The two super power US and Russia are clueless. The groups like NATO holding their pernicious fire power to destroy the world are mellowed today. The wealth and splendor of Europe is down the gutter with frustration laced with failure. The Miracle of China is dirty and filthy word. The energy giants of OPEC are worthless penny today. The ignorance of Africa is yet to see the light of progress and peace. And ever placid Latin America is struggling to even count the casualty it is suffering at the hand of Covid.

The uninvited misery and pain is leaving an unbearable foot note to the society across the globe.  Humanity seems to be helpless. Even the religion of books find no mention of words and sentence to assuage the feelings. The priest and preacher of religious belief are running to doctor and Nurses for their own safety. Their fake propaganda of miraculous healing by Parameshwar is in thin air.

Shall the triumph of a yesterday’s world continue or would it surrender to a disordered disillusioned and deadly sordid reality of today? And you get no answer except for the faces of wailing mothers, orphaned child and comatose humanity.

Has it happened before? Has it ever challenged the humanity before also? Has humanity seen the resurgence ever? The documented world and written pages of science finds no such mention? And hence a despair and disillusionment is the emerging new world order?

There is a world beyond the written format. And the world where memory has been retained and transferred through memorized knowledge. The conscience keeper of Sanatan society the sage and savant assiduously collected the summary of ages for longer than a poetic imagination. Subject as abstract as an ever expanding universe were maintained with impeccable flawlessness.

The Sanatan Literature library todays consists of 4 Ved 5 Aryankas 6 Vedand 13 Upnishad 108 Puranas, Series of Smriti and two unparalleled Epic Gita and Ramayan. The imagination of humane mind shall not trust the sheer volume vastness and depth of these Sanatan Philosophy and Literature. Unbelievable is the response when I narrate just one Epic called Gita have 18000 slokas (couplets). Imagine the sagacity of Sanatan conscience.

Can an individual or a society or nation memorize and ensure transmission to posterity in a flawless manner? Never and impossible. Only Sanatan can and has!

But what is there and why is this so relevant today in handling the Covid challenges to humanities. Read the Sanatan literature. Humanity has won battle larger and more sinister than Covid and emerged victorious. The figurative depiction of Dash Avtaar from Matsya to Lord Kalki is scientific story of evolution of humanity from Single cell water creature to land born Homo sapiens. The Barah Avtaar termed as 3rd (avatar) incarnation shall explain the shape of rounded earth through its mythological representation. Humane life deals with resurrection. Nature and humane discipline shall supplement this survival and sustenance of Humanity. And not to assume that this peregrination is insipid and without any music. The Sam Ved one of the original manuscripts explains the intricacy and range of music, Similarly the Atharveda about Medicine and value of Ayurved.

Present humane world would see this colossal knowledge and its application to survive and grow post covid. When the humanity would be clueless to survive and Medicine will surrender to its limitation the abstract spirituality of Sanatan will show this humanity a life ahead.

Return to Ved.

Is Covid-19 the end of Kerala model?

That Kerala has been often quoted as a “Model State” is a fact. Based on many metrics, many economists and social welfare analysts have often singled out Kerala for its high per capita, the higher literacy rate, their land reforms, higher life expectancy, lower infant mortality etc. In essence, its better social infrastructure has been its key selling point as a “Model State”.

Wikipedia has a whole page dedicated to the “Kerala Model”. There is also a segment which reproduces an opinion which says that it is the world’s most sustainable model. I am not here to contest any of that. This post tries to look at the Post Covid world and how the so called “Kerala Model” may account for nothing in the absence of a strong local / domestic economy.

When you think of Kerala, you think of the famous tagline “God’s Own Country”, which it is truly. Filled with natural landscapes which are beautiful and magical, a trip to Kerala will have great takeaways in the form of wonderful memories. Personally, I would visit Kerala and Karnataka over any other Indian state. My maximum tourist visits have been only to Kerala and bordering towns in Tamil Nadu.

The next thing that you’d be reminded of Kerala is the agricultural exports. Especially spices, coconuts, rubber etc. If I am right, Kerala’s share int he national output on many agricultural products are pretty high. For a tiny state (ranking 23rd in terms of Area; and 13th in terms of Population), its economy is pretty solid.

What is equally interesting to note is that Kerala contributes to over 10% of overall foreign remittances to India. Approximating USD 12 Billion per annum, which based on today’s exchange rate would be around INR 90000 Crores. One of the principal reasons for the same is that Kerala has the largest migrant population of all the Indian states. Almost 20 Lakh Keralites are (almost 6% of Population).  This is not a small number by any means.

Let me give the perspective – a. Kerala’s Gross State Domestic Product is around INR 7,80,000 Crores. This means that almost 11.5% of its overall economy is dependent on Foreign Remittances. b. Kerala is also India’s largest Educational Loans originator, at around INR 60000 to INR 65000 Crores per annum, on an average. This is almost 65% of the overall Foreign Remittances to Kerala.

Now lets look at Covid (a.k.a. China-Virus or Wuhan-Virus) world – With the general economy in a turtle mode for over a year, Covid has made things worse. The Global Economy has come to a virtual standstill. From an outlook which ranged from 5 to 6% of overall GDP Growth for the country, economists are now quoting negative growth to 1%.

And the Global tendancy to give preference to locals over foreign migrants owing to high rates of unemployment, we are going to see lot of migrants across the globe losing their jobs. The middle east, which was living almost entirely off oil boom, is looking at a bleaker future. Russia, US and Mexico’s production has made things worse for them. With the supply glut and the oil prices hitting historic lows, their economy will be hit big time. Countries like Saudi has already resorted to increasing the migrant tax or charges. It is nonviable for migrant to have his or her family in Middle East. And this is not restricted to middle east. As highlighted earlier, there is this trend of reverse Globalisation that this world is witnessing.

What does all this mean to the Kerala Model? 1. With such bleak economic opportunities, and lot of entities cutting the salary, and lot of individuals will be having less to spend. Among the first expenditure anyone would be cutting is “Recreation”, which includes Tourism. More than any other sector, it is the tourism sector that would be hit massively. Tourism contributes to more than 10% of Kerala’s economy, and was steadily growing. With people spending less on tourism, we can expect serious dip in inflows into the State. That can render lot of people jobless. And this can be disastrous for a State with one fourth of its workforce in the tourism sector.

2. With salary cuts pretty much the norm across the globe, and the migrants in Middle East already working on relatively less salary, any more cuts would mean that they’d be remitting less and less to Kerala. For a State that is heavily dependent on Foreign Remittances, this would be another major point of concern. (Personally, I have seen more instances of Keralites working outside their State and India, than others working in there.)

3. With job cuts in the middle east or unsustainable living abroad, and an expected increase in reverse migration, I expect the unemployment in the State to only grow up. People returning aren’t always in a position to set up new businesses with instances of them complaining about the inadequate support for setting up businesses. Previously tourism was the main business, and with that also looking bleak, we would be witnessing some massive idle resources in the State. Unless there are some drastic policy measures put in place with robust execution, the States inability to absorb and employ them productively.

4. What about the massive loans taken for education? With the above pointers, we are probably looking at a rather bleak outlook for the repayment of these loans in the medium term. Any decisive recovery of these loans will will only add to further difficulty in the State.

In addition to the new world or post-Covid world, there are other Kerala specific problems which we have been seeing for years. Kerala is among the highest of politically aware State. Not exactlyl a problem when you see in isolation. You’d probably find more active political parties in Kerala than any other State. Many of these parties have thrived on protests against the so called “Bourgeoisie”.  Many of the successful Kerala based on Entrepreneurs don’t have any serious business in Kerala. They all tend to operate outside of Kerala. The frequent protests masquerading as political activism has resulted in very little robust domestic industry which can accommodate more employment. Then there are tales of “Nooku-Kooli“, which is a rather bad big black mark on the State’s work environment.

The State is yet to recover fully from the havoc caused by floods last years. Its finances aren’t really great, as admitted by the Government itself. Barely a week back, Thomas Isaac, the State’s Finance Minister, admitted that Kerala is financially broke. And the post-Covid world will not be kind to that State. And it is then that the other famed stories about Kerala will be tested.

We are in for some interesting times. And Kerala… for some troubled times, with almost 20 plus percent of its GDP looking rather weak, and 25% of working population risking a job loss.

When economics sings a sad tune, each and every metric on the social infra business, will start weeping. This is not to say that other States are in a good place. But, hey, Kerala is the “Model State”.
