On 30th June 2021, Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi shared an Instagram video shedding light on the Gandhian ideology of the Indian National Congress. In the video, he was seen openly glorifying Congress MLA NA Haris’s son and infamous gangster-criminal Mohammed Haris Nalapad from Bengaluru. Nalapad was in judicial custody for an attempt-to-murder case for attacking Vidvat in a cafe in UB City, Bengaluru just a while ago. As per an article on The News Minute, Mohammed Nalapad was let out on conditional bail, while his passport was surrendered and he had to furnish a bond of Rs 2 lakh and two sureties. The proceedings of the criminal case are still ongoing.

As per the TNM article, Charges against Nalapad include an attempt to murder (section 307 of the Indian Penal Code), sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation), 143 and 144 (unlawful assembly), 146 and 147 (rioting), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the IPC.

The chargesheet filed by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) revealed that Nalapad provoked his aides with the intention of murdering Vidvat. Haris had applied for bail on March 14, 2018 and May 30, 2018 but both of them were categorically rejected by the 8th ACMM Court and the Bengaluru City and Civil Court.

Not new to controversies

Abusing a woman: In April 2021, State vice-president of Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress Bhavya KR had filed a complaint against Congress leader Mohammed Haris Nalapad and others, accusing them of abusing and threatening her. Bhavya had lodged a complaint with High Grounds police on Thursday, stating that Youth Congress state president Raksha Ramaiah and others were setting up a Covid-19 war room at the Congress office on Race Course Road on Thursday. Around 12.45 pm, Nalapad and 18 others came there and allegedly asked them to stop it, hurled filthy abuses at her, and threatened her. Nalapad allegedly asked others to remove the computer tables and gestured as if to assault her, she alleged in the complaint. Police registered a non-cognizable report and are looking into the matter.

Assaulting party works a frequent habit: According to an article on The Hindu, Mohammed Nalapad, had been booked by the Vyalikaval police in Bengaluru for allegedly assaulting a party worker on March 15, 2020.

Based on a complaint filed by Sachin Gowda, the police charged Nalapad and his gunman under assault and criminal intimidation. Nalapad has also filed a complaint, but it is being treated as a non-cognizable report, a senior police officer said. The incident had occurred at Gayatri Devi Park, where a debate programme was organised by the youth Congress under the aegis of Telugu Vignan Samiti.’

Is this Congress culture?

It’s amusing that Rahul Gandhi is blatantly promoting the likes of Mohammed Haris Nalapad in his party, given the kind of background Mohammed Nalapad comes from and his tendency to repeat criminal actions. The Karnataka state unit of Indian National Congress led by KPCC President DK Shivakumar is also trying to install Mohammed Nalapad as the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress by overthrowing the incumbent Raksha Ramaiah. This makes one ponder, is this the criminal culture that the Indian National Congress is trying to propagate?
