2019: A mandate of “VISHWAS” by a transformed electorate

0

On 25th May, In the Central Hall of the Parliament, after getting elected as the leader of NDA for the second time, PM Narendra Modi added “SABKA VISHWAS” to his existing mantra “SABKA SAATH, SABKA VIKAS”. 2019 Loksabha result indeed has been a mandate of Faith “VISHWAS” in Narendra Modi led BJP and NDA.

For the first time in the last 50 years the ruling government has been voted back in power with an absolute majority and with more number of seats. This historic mandate of “VISHWAS” has been delivered by an Indian electorate which now seems to be completely transformed which most of the pollsters and journos failed to read. The key characteristics of this transformed electorate which were so apparent but yet ignored by many in the opposition are as follows:

  1. Indian Voter is first a “Nationalist”

Indians will never support anyone who is seen siding with forces that want to break this country. The Breaking India or the Tukde Tukde brigade supporters lost miserably in these elections. Even the parties seen as standing with them, supporting them or giving them tickets met the same fate.

The common man takes pride in being an Indian and wants the nation to be strong. National Security was an important issue and the voters of India evaluated the options available to them and chose the option that they felt can best guard the borders and interests of the nation.

So, this new Indian voter might have faced some hardships on his way but will still vote for a party which in his opinion will make the nation stronger rather than some party offering Rs. 6,000 per month in the name of justice. This is where Modi’s MAJBOOT SARKAR V/S MAJBOOR SARKAR slogan hit the right chord with voters.

The combined vote share of all regional parties went down from almost 50% to 43% in 2019 and national security played a major role in bringing this number down.

  1. Aspirations and Performance trump the Caste and Religion Arithmetic

The new Indian voter does not appreciate a negative campaign. Voters look for alternatives, solutions, imagination and delivery from the contestants. A negative campaign is sure to fail.

Most of the opposition had put their money on Mahagathbandhan drubbing the NDA in UP and they hoped that if NDA is reduced to 20-30 in UP it can be challenged by a combine of regional players. BSP eventually got 10 seats and SP managed only 5 which shows that their respective voters did not transfer votes to the other. At around 42%, the BJP vote share is more than its national average of 38% in constituencies where we have SC/ST and OBC presence is very high. BJP also won in around 65% of reserved SC/ST seats.

In 2014 the Muslim vote share in favour of BJP had increased to 9 % from 4 %. This number in 2019 should be in the range of 12-14% (final numbers awaited). In 2019, BJP won in 19 seats where Muslim voters are more than 30%. This number was only 10 seats in 2014.

These data points clearly indicate that India is finally voting disregarding caste, religion etc. and that the politics of performance is something everyone will be forced to adopt. Regional or caste based parties cannot take their voters for granted anymore.

  1. Voters Against Elitism and Nepotism

Only because you are an heir or relative of someone who were once represented the constituency, the Indian electorate is not going to vote you in anymore. They will vote for the best candidate. There are no so called strongholds anymore.

This is a very strong message that voters have rejected elitism and that the political capital cannot be inherited, it will need to be earned by sweat and work.

The below relatives and kins from political families lost in 2019 while contesting from their strongholds:

  • Rahul Gandhi from Amethi
  • Jyotiraditya Scindhia from Guna
  • Manvendra Singh from Badmer
  • Parth Pawar from Maval
  • Milind Deora from Mumbai
  • Nikhil Kumaraswamy from Mandya
  • Vaibhav Gehlot from Jodhpur
  1. Women Voters are the key

The voting percentage of women voters in 2019 elections has been almost at par with the male voters. Women voting percentage saw an increase of almost 4-5 % as compared to 2014 which means that issues like women security, women empowerment, abolition of triple talaq, women reservation, toilets etc. will dominate the political discourse in the coming years as well.

  1. Beneficiaries of Schemes are not just Voters but Ambassadors

From the famous quote by an ex PM from Congress that that when we send Rs 1 only 10 Paise reaches the beneficiary of public schemes to this day where extreme focus on reaching the last person supposed to be benefitted has resulted in this historic mandate, it’s a complete paradigm shift.

Good Governance is the single largest reason why an electorate will elect a party to power. And Good Governance cannot be achieved until there is an infrastructure available to ensure that there is no leakage or waste. The opening of Jandhan accounts, DBT mechanisms and end point delivery ensured that money for construction of toilets, housing, Kisan Samman etc. reached the rightful beneficiary.

Many beneficiaries of government schemes like Ujjawala, PMJAY not only became the voters but also the ambassadors of the BJP. And when your beneficiaries are your ambassadors you don’t need a machinery to fight the elections.

To Conclude

In 2019, the Indian Electorate voted the NDA, BJP and Modi because they believe that NDA government under Modi will protect national interests, will address their aspirations, will quell the negativity and continue to deliver on Governance.

I hope that this mandate of “VISHWAS” is respected by the government and I also hope that this transformed electorate again rediscovers itself, becomes more merit driven and analytical in the coming years and goes on to make the Indian Democracy stronger and better.

Understanding Hindu-Muslim historical context

0

Many secular goons say why talk and concentrate on religion it does not matter. If religion does not matter then why Christian/Muslim invaders took so many efforts to convert native Hindus to their faith! Why Tipu or Mughal took so many efforts to build mosques and convert natives into their faith.

Why Aurangzeb/Babur/Tughluq spent so much state machinery to destroy Temples? Surely religions do matter.

Speaking truth is not communal hatred. A historian cannot justify Islamic sins by saying- Oh Hindus believed in dogmatic rituals and they were divided bla…bla…bla….

I am countering as many secular lies as possible which are spoken to shame Hindus and glorify barbarism of European invaders or Islam

Akbar was secular as he had Hindu ministers

This is the most foolish argument I heard from secular ranks which says Akbar was secular just because he had some Hindu ministers in his royal court. Can you rule a Hindu majority nation without having a single Hindu bureaucrat?

Secular ranks hate Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister Uttar Pradesh! Yogi Adityanath has a Muslim minister in his council of ministers. Will secular goons accept him as Muslim loving Chief Minister?

Akbar’s father Humayun ran away after defeat from Sher Shah Suri and many Afghan mercenaries protested against him because it was believed by many that Mughal are not from Afghan descent. Even though Mughal got reinstated on Agra throne there was constant question on legitimacy of political power and therefore it was political compulsion of Akbar to say sweet words to Hindus!

Many Qazi opposed Akbar for tolerant policy towards Hindus and why he constituted marriage alliance with Hindus, this is what secular historians claim. Yes Qazi opposed him but not for the reason given by secular goons.

Even in past Arab Muslims forcibly captured and married Non-Arab ladies of Persia and African regions. It is done to convert them into Islam. Muslim clerics were angry with Akbar because he was an alcohol consumer. His son Salim (later he took Jehangir title) just swam in wine and was not interested in anything else especially in early 20s of his age.

This made Islamic clerics angry because they believe that wine is prohibited by Islam. Other than wine Akbar truly followed Islam and tried to reduce Hindu population and turn the demographic. He ordered his secret forces to capture innocent Hindu girls for slavery.

British divided Hindus and Muslims- Please do not blame Muslims!

Sayyad Ahmed Khan, founder of Aligarh Muslim movement clearly said- Both Islam and Christianity are almost same.

It indicates that there is some nexus between these two faiths! Abraham of Christianity is said Ibrahim in Islam. Daniel of Christian Bible becomes Danyal in Islam.

In 1761 when Mughal rule was very weak, suddenly Ahmad Shah Abdali came from Afghanistan. Maratha Kings were determined to throw out Mughal rule from India, Ahmad Shah Abdali started fighting Hindus. He was supported by Nawab of Awadh and other Muslim nobles.

As soon as Abdali butchered Hindus he left and reinstated Mughal! At that time British forces were stationed in Afghan borders were trying to strengthen their naval base in Western India! It clearly suggests that Britishers funded Afghan rebels to weaken Hindus!

British kept on blaming Hindus for poor conditions of Muslims in India. Winston Churchill who ignored how English butchered Irish people started blaming Brahmins for everything.

Even today Western newspapers blame India and plant fake theories to shame Hindus.

Those who question united India, never questioned Confederate States of America who rebelled against state. Will secular goons say that idea of Italy or Germany never existed and that is why Italy and Prussian episodes happened?

Do not blame Muslims for India’s partition- Only few people had right to vote.

Yes it’s true that elections of 1937 were held according to provisions of Govt of India Act, 1935 and only 14% population had right to vote. But the story still continues!

Iqbal who wrote- Saare Jahan se Achha, Hindostan Hamara, convinced Jinnah to struggle for Muslim identity politics.

Why East Bengal and West Punjab converted into Islamic state?

Although Jinnah won elections from Muslim reserved seat of Bombay, he knew that area of Bombay has phenomenal Hindu majority. North West region and East Bengal had close sizeable number of Muslims and that is why these regions became Pakistan!

Secular goons must not lie and give clean chit to Muslims. On the contrary secular goons blame Hindu Mahasbha and RSS for communal riots. We must remember that Hindu Mahasabha and RSS were not involved in provincial Government forming process, they had no political power, they were not backed by industrialists like Congress and Muslim League!

Direct action against Hindus was announced by Jinnah in Bengal. Many innocent Hindus were butchered by Muslim mobs most of them were Dalit. So do not go for fake Dalit-Muslim unity narrative.

Conclusion

Hindus must remember that holy place of Islam like Mecca do not exist in India and that is why their loyalty shifts towards Arab world. Arab sheikhs are buying Muslim girls in Hyderabad but tragedy is that Hindus are blamed for poor economic condition of India.

Why Muslim rulers failed to empower Muslims of India, they always presented themselves as backwards!

4 Maps and a prophecy

0

Modi 2.0 has taken oath and many Twitterati are (naturally and rightly) out with their wish list from the new government. In this humdrum a very vital news report lost its significance.

Why I feel it’s a vital news I will explain with 4 maps. There are three fundamental things a human needs to live and grow 1) Air 2) Water 3) Land (for food, living etc)

MAP 1 : Population

This world map has only 10% of the world’s population plotted. The red part has 5% of the world population and the blue has another 5%.  Bihar, WB and Bangladesh with only minuscule of land area are contributing as much population as that large blue area which has whole of Australia, Canada and Scandinavia.  Clearly the small land mass in Red is unsustainable for human population growth

MAP 2 : Forest Density

This map depicts the forestation that is vital for ecology. There are large black area that represent the desert area of Australia, Sahara and  Gobi. But do you see India? It’s an almost black mass with a thin strip of forest in Himalayan Terai region, south western ghats and Bastar and central India. The high population of the country is taking its toll on Flora and Fauna. A natural forest can be cut in a year but takes 100 years to afforest a deforested land to its original form.

MAP 3 : Air pollution

Forest works as lungs of the landmass. With high population and negligible forest it is natural to have high amount of dust and pollutants in the air. Whole of Indus and Ganges valley has high air population. Air pollution has already started taken its toll on old and the children in Delhi NCR. Many people have already started migrating out of Delhi NCR for fear of Air pollution. But other areas of India are just few year away from where Delhi NCR stands now. And its just the start!

MAP 4 : Water Scarcity

All ancient civilization developed on the river banks due to easy access of water. Indus-Saraswati civilization is said to have died due to lack of water when river Saraswati dried up. Water is something we are fast consuming and depleting. Almost most of India is now water stressed. Even world bank is predicting water wars in coming future. (Here we are talking just about water availability and not have gone into the water quality issues which in itself is a very vast subject) Indian government is trying to interlink Rivers and that may delay the situation by few years but not for long. Himalayan Glaciers are melting and Ground water is depleting fast and cannot be replenished fast enough. It takes years for Soil aquifers to filter the rain water and for snow to get converted into Glaciers.

Clearly all 3 pillars that sustain life in India ; of Land availability, water availability and clean air availability are crumbling and crumbling fast. If the situation continues unabated for some more years we may see a start of population collapse and/or mass migration as a nature’s way of correcting balance. Environment and Ecology cannot be improved overnight and not without a commensurate population control (or reduction). Population control bills is the ask of the time and if we fail to control our population; Nature will not. And therein lies the Prophecy!

Note: This whole analysis is done as a point in time and does not factor in rate of degradation. That will help in estimating the time we have left to act. however that does not take away the glaring need to ACT.

Congress going into oblivion

0

Last week, there were 3 articles in TOI advising induction of new blood as leaders in the Congress party. But why waste time on a party which has no worthwhile leader and nothing positive to show as its performance over the last 70 years, as against, off-course, its record of emergency, Sikh massacre and corruption.

The facts of emergency and Sikh massacre are too stark to be forgotten. But the facts of corruption are more often than not forgotten or get lessened in gravity, particularly to newer generations. Hence, how the legacy of corruption has been carried forward under Congress rule need to be recounted so that such evil regimes are never allowed again to continue with their misrule.

Corruption and nepotism started under Nehru’s benign gaze in post-independence India with the Jeep Scandal, the Mundhra-LIC scandal and the Dharma Teja-Jayanti Shipping Corporation scam and has continued to flourish till 2014 under the patronage of his dynasty. These include Bofors and many cases of corruption perpetrated during the UPA 1 and 2 misrule. Corruption was all pervasive starting from bribes and tax evasions to large value financial fraud, black money generation and illegal overseas deposits.

Some Major Scams under UPA Government are:

2G Spectrum Scam (2008): One of the biggest scams in India was the 2G scam, in which telecom minister A. Raja was charged for issuing 2G licenses to private telecom players at very cheap rates in 2008. No rules and regulations were followed. The scam cost Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the government.

Commonwealth Games Scam (2010): The total worth of Commonwealth Games Scam is estimated to be Rs. 70,000 crores. The face of the scam was Suresh Kalmadi, the Congress party representative to the 15th Lok Sabha from the Pune constituency. At that time, Kalmadi was the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Delhi Commonwealth Games. Other big-shots allegedly involved were Sheila Dikshit, the then chief minister of Delhi and Robert Vadra.

Coal Scam (2012): With the Coal Scam, the government bore a loss of Rs 1.86 lakh crore. The CAG presented a report and pointed out the irregularities involved in the auctioning of 194 coal blocks.

Chopper Scam (2012): This scam is an example of bribery and corruption in India which involved many politicians, senior officials in India like former Indian Air Force Chief, Chief Marshal S.P. Tyagi, and helicopter manufacturer Augusta Westland. The company had given bribe to get a contract for supplying 12 helicopters worth USD 610 million. A note presented on March 15, 2008 in an Italian court indicates that the former Congress President Sonia Gandhi was also probably involved in the scam.

Adarsh Scam (2012): The Adarsh Housing Scam is related to the allocation of flats below market rates in a very posh 31-storey building, the Adarsh Housing Society in Colaba, Mumbai. Allegations have been made against three former chief ministers of Maharashtra – Sushil Kumar Shinde, Vilas Rao Deshmukh and Ashok Chavan.

The list of scams under the UPA government is too long and looks never-ending. High profile leaders who have been accused of corruption recently include the likes of former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid who was implicated in a Rs 71 lakh scam and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul who were indicted by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy of a Rs 1,600 Cr fraud. Oscar Fernandez, Sam Pitroda and Motilal Vora are co-accused in this case.

Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra and P Chidambaram and his son Karthi Chidambaram have recently come under the spotlight for alleged graft through their businesses and office. The Enforcement Directorate has summoned Robert Vadra in money laundering case relating to alleged possession of foreign assets. He has been granted anticipatory bail. Chidambaram and his son have been charged by CBI in Aircel-Maxis case and INX Media case. Now, there are reports that CBI is going to initiate proceedings against Kamal Nath for corruption. This way it would be difficult to find out a single leader in the Congress party who is above reproach.

India has voted against entitlement which the Congress represents. Scroll in says it is time the Congress stood for a political idea rather than a political family. But the party does not have a clear ideology nor does it have any leader who can effectively communicate whatever little it has to offer. It is therefore only natural and desirable for the party to go into oblivion.

India’s win raises hopes for ICC Cup

0

As was being said about the prospect of Indian cricketers so was shown by them in the very first match. If South African’s Kagiso Rabada managed to show his bowling competence, Indian batsmen and bowlers were not lagging behind. Yuzuvendra Chahal and Rohit Sharma did full justice with the ball and the bat. The result was thumping six-wicket win at Rose Bowl in Southampton. The defeat was South Africa’s third on the trot in the ongoing 12th edition of ICC 2019 World Cup.

The 6-wicket approved their play of a stronger team. Now hopes are surely high with this latest result. Cricket is definitely a game of uncertainty. Anything can happen. This has been affirmed following victories put up by Bangladesh and Pakistan in its earlier matches, though both have also licked the taste of defeats too. It appears India team will have to continue its winning performance in its next encounter with Australia.  A vastly improved batting display by Rohit Sharma was a testimony to this factual reality. It was a major turnaround in the match from our side.

If Pakistan was negated by a barrage of bouncers against West Indies, of course, England followed the similar tactics with their attack by fast bowler Mark Wood. West Indian player Oshane Thomas brilliantly showed his bowling expertise while Chris Gayle on the batting front rained gale of fifty runs quickly. In fighting against South Africa, MS Dhoni stitched up a solid & important partnership with Rohit’s gusty above one hundred runs which eventually turned out to be game-changer for Virat Kohli & Co.

It remained his 23rd One-dayer ton off 128 deliveries leaving Saurav Ganguly behind. Sachin Tendulkar has also a record of more centuries for India. It was because of his responsible play India’s victory was in sight. Overjoyed with India’s performance the fans had to express: Is this the Hampshire Bowl or Wankhede in Mumbai? What was fantastic during the match was Quinto De Knock’s amazing catch from every angle. This was just incredible from him. The cricket fans still feel India and Pakistan should stand in the fighting row till the last in the match.

World Environment day: Clean the river Ganga or loose Ganga Dolphins!

0

India is one of the 12 mega diversity countries in the world. Our country has been blessed by approximately 8% of the world’s biodiversity. Thanks to the type of landforms and water bodies which provide our country with such huge biodiversity. But at the same time, our country also ranks in one of those countries which are losing their rich heritage at an alarming rate. The major reason for the extinction of biodiversity and habitat fragmentation is over-exploitation, population, the introduction of invasive species etc.

All over the globe, the biodiversity is facing serious threat because of human activities that are causing loss of natural habitat, polluting and contaminating the water sources and others. In India pink-headed duck, Asian cheetah, hyper dolphin vanished one or other reasons mentioned above. At present Indian Bustard, sarus crane, Asiatic lion, blackbuck, Ganga river dolphin etc. are on the way to meet the same fate. Wild conservation needs constant effort and public awakening; World environment day is one such occasion that needs to be utilized for that. None of the species can be permitted to vanish, but in one article we not highlight the issue of all those species that are vanishing.

The case of Ganga river dolphins stand apart because of two reasons one, it is the national water animal of India and second, its conservation being directly related to Cleaning of river Ganga. Ganga river dolphin was officially discovered in 1801 and is one of the oldest creatures in the world. These dolphins are studied blind and catch their prey by an emitting an ultrasonic sound. Their number that was once in tens of thousands is now less than 2000. The first report commissioned by Wildlife Institute of India at Dehradun under Namami Gange scheme notes that for the decline in their population match results in their extinction. There are several reasons for this decline.

The first and foremost is that Ganga dolphin can only live in freshwater and the Ganga water is no fresher. The river is itself is choking to death because of the pollutants being discharged. Around a hundred cities situated at the bank of river discharge 2953 million litres of sewage daily, of which only 1584 million litres of gets treated, the rest amount just flows into. The second cause is the direct killing, although declining in most areas it is still a major reason. Dolphins are getting killed by the fishermen for their meet and oil, that are a good fish attractant. The third reason is the habitat fragmentation by dams and barrage. The construction of dams and barrage restrict the movement of dolphins rendering them isolated into sub-population

Our country is known as the pioneer of wildlife conservation. As early as in 1972, the Government of India enacted the wildlife protection act and provided legal protection to the Ganga dolphin in schedule 1. Even IUCN in 1996 categorised them as endangered species in Appendix 1 of the convention on the international trade on endangered species of flora and fauna and in the convention on migratory species in Appendix 2. Conservation action plan has also been prepared for the Ganga river dolphin which includes capacity building protection and Restoration of habitats, conducting of periodic status surveys and monitoring, providing education awareness, the rescue and rehabilitation on identified thrust area.

If the trend continues, very soon, Ganga river dolphins will meet the fate same of China’s Yangtze River dolphin that is now extinct. The major reasons we are not successful in Ganga river dolphins’ conservation is our slow speed of cleaning the river and lack of public awareness. There is no doubt that the government is committed and the actions are being taken, but the desired result is still far away. The only thing we can say at the moment is that with the new team at the centre we can hope for the best and wait for the results.

Why Kejriwal wants a free ride to the CM office

0

A lot of how our life shapes up depends on how we are born. One of the more defining birth factors for quality of our future life is the financial health of the parents. There are more factors of course but I have picked finance and put it aside to start with because it is, in my opinion, one of the most difficult to get rid of. To the financial mess, add a mix of caste and gender, and things become a lot more complicated. I do not mention the hierarchy of caste or gender here because we are living in an age where any permutation and combination of this set has its own disadvantages. A poor and discriminated-caste born individual has to tide over his social suffering in addition to the wealth crisis. A meritorious upper caste but poor individual has no advantage over the reserved category candidate (financial status notwithstanding) who is inferior to him in intelligence and effort. Add gender here and we get into a whirlpool of problems.

Now take out all other factors and see the female case exclusively, women face discrimination for being born a woman in many social spaces. Now, here lies their problem. While you can still outgrow your caste or migrate to a more egalitarian society, you cannot get away from your gender. As gender is a biological truth, the discrimination takes a more hideous turn and can affect a woman of upper caste as severely as it can affect someone from the lower caste. From the first challenge of not getting sacrificed for a male child and ‘getting a safe birth’ to do everything that comes a tad easier for men, in our present society, women have to battle hundred things to earn a livelihood and lead an independent life. This becomes even more challenging if she is born to poor or discriminated-caste parents. Some do not try, some try but fail, some do not want to try, and then some try and succeed. During this struggle, these women ask many difficult questions to the society. They make themselves aware of their rights and then demand that their rights be protected.

The answers are more difficult than they seem to be at first sight. Therefore, our leaders promise many CCTVs to see the problem more clearly. Then, they realize that the metro fare hike has hit women the worst.  They throw a free bus and metro ride pass at them – “please take this free bus pass, you are safer now in Delhi buses. I am hereby buying your vote!”

Arvind Kejriwal is not the problem. He is just another politician who has mastered the art of milking the rotten ecosystem of bribing the electorate before every election. If our politicians had the integrity of thought, there would have been more and better buses on roads, panic buttons and GPS tracking on all buses. There would be more street lighting and better last mile connectivity for commuters, male or female. There could have been free public transport systems for all Indians without burdening the exchequer.

Mr. Arvind Kejriwal likes to tell his voters to take the money other parties offer them and still vote for the broom, his party’s election symbol. Times can change quickly. Sadly, he is the one offering that money now. The voters will keep it, just the way he prefers. It remains to be seen whom they vote for next year. A party’s rhetorics and manifesto for the upcoming elections can easily posit themselves as the report card of its manifesto from the previous elections.

A dropped promise means that the promise couldn’t be delivered as the Government was busy begging alliances and fighting other elections in the country. A promise added with freebies means that the promise fetched votes last time around but couldn’t be implemented because they were never supposed to be implemented but have the potential to work again if made with some free gifts. A promise finding a place again without any progress or addition means that the party is waiting for a majority in the Rajya Sabha.

The 2015 manifesto of AAP speaks about CCTVs in all buses. Delhi is going to vote again in 2020. AAP has promised to install CCTVs again. Of course, just CCTVs will not be safe enough for the AAP to secure their seats this time. They need some free passes to ride their luck in 2020.

Getting to the bottom of anti Hindi protests in Tamil Nadu

Anti-Hindi protests in Tamil Nadu are simply unwarranted. After all, implementation of 3 language formula as advocated by NEP, is just a draft proposal that has been put in public domain for wider consultations and discussions. It is not for the first time that such an issue has cropped up; the nation has vivid memories of the turmoil & violence that occurred during the anti-Hindi demonstrations in Tamil Nadu in the fifties and the sixties.

As a matter of fact, the very organization of states in India on linguistic basis has engendered regionalism and ‘sons of the soil’ attitude bordering on sub-nationalism at times. It would have been much better had the states been reorganized on the basis of geography and financial sustainability as this would have facilitated more development. But though the union government can alter and change the boundaries of states and rename them by a simple majority of votes in Parliament as per constitution, the clock can’t be reversed due to adverse socio-political ramifications. Surprisingly, other southern states like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala do not have so much disdain towards Hindi as the Tamilians and slowly but steadily, they have started accepting Hindi as a link language with the rest of the country. Why is the case of Tamil Nadu so different?

The fault lies in the nature of Dravidian polity. The edifice of the Dravidian movement has been built on hatred against the Aryan culture, disdain towards the Brahmins and protest against the imposition of Hindi. Right after independence, the leader of the Dravidian movement Periyar harboured dreams of establishing an independent Dravida land comprising of all the south Indian states. He was more supportive of the imperial power than the national freedom movement which, for him, was simply a movement to impose the hegemony of Brahmins over the Indian landscape once the Britishers left India. However, the Dravidian movement failed to transcend the boundaries of Tamil Nadu but to its credit, Dravidian parties like DMK and later on AIADMK wiped out the national parties electorally from the state.

Post 1967, both the main Dravidian parties have ruled the state continuously without ceding any ground to either Congress or BJP though at the national level, these parties have no aversion to entering into alliances with pan India parties to be part of coalition governments. Inward looking Dravidian parties have always resisted the national mainstream and taken pride in the exclusivity of their cultural identity. Though the goal of the Dravidian movement has been social revolution, facts prove otherwise as Tamil Nadu has become the den of caste politics. Intermediate and OBC castes like Grounders, Vanniyars, Thevars etc have wielded political power while Dalits have been marginalized to the periphery. Not only this, Dalits have suffered atrocities at the hands of powerful intermediate & OBC castes like Vanniyars from time to time which have scoffed at Dalit assertion. Dalit parties like VCK or Panthers are still on the fringe. Construction of a caste wall in Uthapuram to segregate the Dalit population attracted national headlines while violence against dalits at places like Dharmapuri are not isolated incidents.

Isn’t it pathetic that despite the passage of more than 70 years since the onset of the Dravidian revolution, the state has seen no Dalit CM? The anti Dalit feudal character of the Dravidian parties is hidden just because from time to time, these parties launch radical welfare programs like Mid-Day Meal and distribute free TV sets and free Washing machines to the Dalits in the glare of cameras. If Dravidian movement was about egalitarianism and social transformation, why have the structural measures like land reforms in favour of the Dalits not undertaken? The harsh reality is that Dravidian movement was designed with the sole purpose of ending the monopoly of Brahmins in social, political and cultural matters. The Dravidians have proved far worse than the much reviled Brahmins when comes to subjugation of Dalit rights.

The Dravidian parties targeted Brahmins because as the custodians of the Hindu culture & religion, the Brahmins maintained the organic linkage of the Tamils with the rest of the country and by virtue of a head start in education, they dominated the Tamil society intellectually and politically. Parties like DMK and AIADMK have tried to carve out a distinct autonomous Dravida identity to perpetuate their domination and keep the state secluded socially and culturally from the Indian landmass. The protest against Hindi should be seen in this context. DMK and AIADMK do not want BJP to gain a footprint in the state. Nationalism and Hindutva are anathema for them.

Dravidian politics has murdered the soul of Tamil Nadu by contemplating to disconnect the state from the past. The Sangam literature composed in ancient times talked about worship of Vishnu, Shiva and Indra and mentions Ganges as the sacred river besides referring to Hindu rituals, festivals, Vedic sacrifices and even funerals. Even the word Sangam comes from a Sanskrit word Sangha that means gathering or congregation of people. For all those advocates of Dravidian politics who tend to separate Sanskrit from Tamil as distinct language groups, it is pertinent to point out that both Sanskrit and Tamil had the same mother i.e. Brahmi language. Murugan is the most worshiped god in Tamil Nadu and he is regarded as the son of Shiva and nephew of Vishnu. Some of the most marvelous Hindu temples are in Tamil Nadu and all of them have been erected by the great Hindu rulers of the Chola, Chera, Pandya, Rashtrakutta and other dynasties.

Unfortunately, for the Dravidian parties, these temples have become money spinning machines. From time immemorial, the Bharatvarsha has been conceived of a geographical entity extending from the oceans to the Himalayas irrespective of enormous diversity and has witnessed the acceptance of common deities, common belief systems, common modes of worship and common gods & goddesses. Hinduism has been the cultural fusion between the Indo Aryans and the Dravidians. The Alvars and the Nayanars who were Tamils played a key role in the perpetuation of the Bhakti tradition in the country.

However hard you try, you can’t kill the connection between the Sanatan Dharma and the land of Adi Shankara, Vellavalur and the revolutionary poet Subramani yam Bharti. Dravida itself is a Sanskrit word that means a place where the great ocean waters meet. Dravida has never been about race and hence its high time the Dravidian parties stop preaching the race theories that they have borrowed from the west. Vellavalur’s Thirukurral is traditionally praised as Universal Veda and touches issues that are at the core of Sanatan philosophy, culture and civilization. It is widely believed that Tolakkapiyam (Tamil grammar) was composed by the disciples of sage Agastya who crossed Vindhyas to enter south. The popularity of Ramayana in that part of India shows the emotional bonding between north and south. Lord Rama fought with Ravanna and for this, he had to traverse through south and places like Rameswaram still bear testimony to our cultural unity. Kamban Ramayan is a masterpiece.

The religions that originated in the north like Buddhism and Jainism are mentioned with great veneration in Tamil literature. Now let us turn to kings and rulers of the south. Though military expeditions from north to south or vice versa were difficult due to inhospitable terrain, they occurred from time to time. Rajendra Chola defeated the Pallas of the Ganga region and brought the holy Ganga water to purify his capital Gangai Konda Cholapuram. Cheran Senguttuvam of Sangam age defeated the Yavanas and is said to have expanded his kingdom even up to the Himalayas as mentioned in Purananooru. The famous Gupta ruler Samudragupta reached as far as Kanchipuram in his southern military expedition. The footprint of the Indian cultural matrix is seen in places as far as Myanmar, Indonesia and Sri lanka and only the south Indian kings could have done that due to their superior navy. So, Tamil Nadu and the northern part of the Indian peninsula were no strangers to each other and were bound by a common unifying thread of Sanatan Dharma.

I think Dravidian politicians are never going to succeed in their nefarious design of trying to alienate Tamil Nadu from the national mainstream. Tamil Nadu is as Sanatan as the rest of the country and rather than allowing the existence of racial theory inspired insincere Dravidian political whims and fancies, the union Govt needs to intervene with the 3-language formula. The Hindi language needs to be promoted and not imposed. Why do the Tamil politicians want to prevent Tamilians from learning Hindi which is the most popular and major link language of the nation? All the states should adopt 3-language formula on a level footing. The Hindi states like UP, Bihar and MP must ensure that apart from Hindi and English, the school children learn a regional language, preferably from the south like Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam etc.

The third language must not be made mandatory for school exams but be just of optional or qualifying nature. No one expects people from south becoming experts in Hindi and people from north having a profound knowledge in Tamil but at least, the working knowledge or the school level elementary knowledge in third language must there among people. To know a language is to know its culture. Multi lingual people are expected to know about and interact with more cultures making them more accommodative. Multi linguality can help check against regional/linguistic chauvinism. The 3-language formula is going to foster nationalism, promote brotherhood and integration and pave the way for individuals to go slow on their regional identity in favour of becoming national citizens.

The central government needs to act tough and not bow down to the pressure created by regional political parties of Tamil Nadu. The divisive Dravidian ideology needs to be defeated and the lost cultural civilizational glory of Tamil Nadu needs to be reclaimed. But before implementing the study of Hindi as the third language in Tamil Nadu, the state governments of the northern Hindi states must reciprocate and adopt Tamil or any other Dravidian language whole heartedly in their curriculum. Before talking about Hindi, let us not forget that there is more than half of the Indian population that is non-Hindi in tongue; in its love for Hindi the nation can’t afford to ride roughshod over other regional languages.

TEN contributions of Mughals to Bharat, I’d bet you wouldn’t know anything about

0

As a student of history, Indic and otherwise – I am endlessly pained that, many glorious achievements, discoveries & inventions of Mughals are yet to be duly acknowledged & respectfully credited to them.

I am sure that this is because of ‘Nationalist Historians’ of the saffron kind who have always been busy rewriting the histories. The scum. Now that the Hindu Nationalist Chaiwallah Chowkidhar Narendra Modi is back in power, they are of course slated to become more emboldened and obfuscate the many splendored histories and contributions of the Indian Nationalist Mughals.

But, what is more galling is that, even the eminent, self-styled and scholarly Twistorians such as Ramachandra Guha, Irfan Habib, Romila Thapar, Rana Safvi and –  young Zainab Sikhandar & Audrey Truschke – and ganga-jamuni tehzeeb specialists like Rana Safvi – and the up & coming Great historian Tony Joseph (from the staple stable of TheHindu) are yet to work on these aspects of our hidden histories.

Oh the horror, the horror. Oh, the neglect. The indifference and indifference to our holy & exalted Mughal pasts…

This is really a sad thing and hence needs to be set right, pronto. So, here are my humble research findings and pointers. I should thank my Guruji Comrade Kanhaiya Kumar of ‘JNU Tere Tukde Honge’ fame for effulgent guidance and may his light eternally enlighten me.

Oh well.

Do we even know that the following have happened ONLY because of the Mughal rule?

1. Bollywood: The idea of Bollywood was actually invented by the Mughals and by all the assorted actor Khans — and the rest OWE their very existence to our Mughals – Proof: Mughal-e-Azam.

2. Rasgulla or Rosgulla: This is actually derived from Roza Mughalla. – the sweetmeat that was eaten reverentially, after his morning Roza by Aurangzeb. Well, he actually ate Roza Mughallas between the making of his daily skullcap as a pious Muslim and the skulduggery that he routinely practiced as a hobby. In fact he is the forerunner of the JCB, though nobody including his ardent fan, Audrey Truschke acknowledges that. He was the original, great Demolition Man. His contributions are still there for all to see at Kashi, Mathura and many other places.

In fact, it is strongly recommended by the author that a Stamp commemorating his achievements be released immediately, lest he will accuse the Modi government of Intolerance. Subsequent to that, a posthumous awarding of Bharat Ratna to him can be explored as well.

3. Idli: This so-called South Indian snack is actually derived from Id il-Aarz. This Id, the Festival of

It is called Kushboo Idli.

Rice, was celebrated in the vast deserts of Arabia, after the yearly-thrice bountiful harvests – actually THREE times an year.

During the times of the Caliph Uthman, this steamed rice pudding was quite a delicacy, was the principal food during that particular Id and the Arab traders brought them over to the Tamil kingdoms down south, apparently. The rest is idlistory – the Mughals helped popularize it all over India by making it a court food, in their food courts.

In fact, to continue with the traditions of Mughal inventions — one of the modern day princesses of white Mughals – Ms Kushboo (a prominent leader of the Indian Notional Congress in Tamil Nadu) has a mutant form of bloated Idli named after her.

4. Hummus: The origin of this delicacy made from ground chickpeas and sesame seeds – is wrongly attributed to Middle East. Actually it was Humayun, the son of Babar – who invented this recipe, while playing around with chicks of various kinds, no harem done, while musing about his Mongol pasts. The connection obviously is: Humayun + Musing + Chicks.

It is really unfortunate that, even famed linguists & polymaths like Jeyamohan, who has done some fantastic authoritative research on Sanskrit word roots & assorted etymologies, haven’t figured this out. The question is: Have they have chickened out?

5. Sambar: This was a recipe developed to feel the pulse of the nation during Mughal times. Essentially comprised of various lentils and pulses such as Bengalgram, Deccangram, Gujaratgram, Gurugram etc – it was invented by a Mughal warlord Amjad Khan, who went ballistic saying “Arre O’ Saamba” every few minutes, in a Mughal period feature fillum called Sholay, script for which was written by another Mughal Courtier Javed Akhthar Kadju.

Amjad Khan named the tasty soup that he dished up – Samba Arre – in a poetic turn of phrases. The rest is Sambarstory.

To think that we credit this tasty dish to a particular random Maratha Raja in Thanjavur of  Tamilnadu! Sheesh! When are we going to even begin to become secular?

6. Gol Gappa (AKA Panipuri): Originally from Mongol lands of the Mughal pasts, this very popular well rounded delight was ALSO an invention of the Mughals. If we trace the etymology of GolGappa, Gol actually comes from MonGOL. Gappa is a corruption of the word that signifies the divine messenger of God – Gabriel.

Legend goes that, it was Gabriel who brought the heavenly delight over to MonGols – to signify via the metaphor that, the spherical world’s sole purpose is to be gobbled up by Mongols and their Moghul descendents. This fact, over time, has resulted in the morphing of the delicacy’s name to Gol of Gabbbahsahib or GolGabba and then over centuries, to Gol Gappa.

Learned GolGappa Scholars such as Audrey Truschke posit that, when Aurangzeb took a Gap year from governance, he survived solely on the Gols of Gabriel. And hence the name Gol Gappa. But, like all other ‘research’ of grand ma’am – this is also suspect. More like a self-gol.

7. Kanjeevaram: Originally called Khanchipur, it was established during the times of the Genghis Khanate, the forefatherly figure of the Mughal kingdoms of yore. It is pertinent to note that Silk Road wound its way not only thru the Khanates, but also to and from Khanchipur.

8. Mysore Pak: As the name very much indicates, the origin of this delicacy (mistakenly considered as of South Indian origin) actually is Pakistan.

During the times of the glorious Sultan of Swig, Tipu in Mysore state, the Mughal remnants in Delhi had sent an excellent Cook, so that the Mughals could make peace with Tipu. And this Kook, originally from Aligarh Muslim University, not only invented the idea of a sweet Pakistan, thereby cooking up a two notion theory – but also went ahead to co-brand it as that of Tipu’s very own Mysore.

Typically (Mysore) Pak is broken into small delicious pieces and is gobbled up. In the same way, Pak has already gotten broken-up into two pieces, and we Mughal worshippers all know that. Again, Pak is perhaps going to be broken down in to many more smaller delicious pieces, Paklets as you will, as the ancient Mughal Kook willed. Inshah allah.

But, unfortunately, even erudite Scholars of MysorePak who ought to know better, such as Anand Ranganathan, are all under the mistaken impression that the aforesaid Mysore Pak was invented in TamilNadu! Bah!

9. Meme: The original memes, were of course done by the Mughals. For the Mughals, Of the Moghuls and Off the Mughals. This requires no great elaboration – as there are widely available and verifiable facts for all of us to see.

10. Jio: This actually is an abridged and modified form of the loan word from  the Arabic – Jizya, the annual per capita tax levied on non-muslims/dhimmis as a matter of routine, during most of the Mughal rule too.

The Reliance guys actually stole the idea of the Mughals, and have floated their mythical Internet services around the same and developed upon it – just with a view to enslaving Indians, just like the Islamists of yore did.

This is intelligently mosqued as the payment for Internet services that all the people of Bharat are now addicted to like crazy. Do we even realize that, we pay for Jio (a mutated form of Jizya O) services – which means we pay monthly taxes/fees, presumably to the Ambani Mughals? Isn’t this shocking?

…As we can all see – the effects and legacy of the patriotic Mughals, run deep, really deeeeep. We can go on and on – tracing everything that has ever happened in India, even before the Mughals, to Mughals – but then, there is no point in stating and restating the obvious. Thanks!

Now, as in the grand tradition of all deep & stellar sociological-etymological  ideas – it is time to talk about the subaltern theoretic definition that explains how we have to perceive things, in a Secular India.

M & N Rule for Indian narratives: It is self-evident that, if anything Indic – any relic of science, technology, literature, artifact etc etc cannot be traced back to the great Mughals for some reason or the other, it can definitely be traced to our very own Chacha Jawaharlal Nehru.

This is also the Liberal Law of Impulse, which when applied, gains incredible momentum on its own – thanks to massively parallel multiple cycles of manufacture, quoting, citing, acknowledging, pushing, promoting and propagandizing the basic idea.

However, please note that – the one and only Jawaharlal Nehru was and has been responsible for everything good that happened on this OpIndia blog – erm, including this post.

Jai Mughal!

Jai Chacha Nehru.
