Sachin Sachin, 7 years of ODI retirement!

0

Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar has retired 7 years ago in December 2012 from one-day international, creating a void that no one can fill. He is not just a terrific player and God for all the cricket lovers but his contribution to the game of Cricket is much more than that.

At the age of 16, he represented India and from that point of time, he never looked back.

Everyone knows about his records and achievement so we can see a different aspect of his role towards cricket and uniting India.

The best aspect of Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is that he was not only a great player but a great human being too with whom no one can be compared. When someone followed Sachin, he not only enjoyed his cricketing abilities but also his honesty and dedication.

In his 24 years of international career, no one can say that he heard Sachin using any foul language at the ground, the youth used to follow him and tries to adapt his nature so the best thing was that no one tries to use abusive language during a gully cricket also and everyone wanted to give response with performance but nowadays no matter how good a batsman is most of them are so money minded and arrogant that all of them uses foul language on the field ignoring the fact they are idols for crores of people and no player can be seen declining an advertisement of alcohol brand to set a good example.

Even if someone breaks his record then also he can’t be compared to Sachin, because the rules during Sachin’s time were very strict and scoring runs were difficult, in current scenario, there is no quality bowler exist which was during Tendulkar’s tenure, bowlers like Akram, Walsh, Akhtar, McGrath, Warne, and Lee were so deadly that no one can compare a single bowler of current teams with them.

At Sachin’s time team was dependent on him and he proved that he is the real fighter not only on the ground but off the ground too, in his career Sachin suffered various injuries including fatal injury like Tennis Elbow bit he overcome all the difficulty because of his desire for the goal he has set in his career to serve the nation and win the World Cup for India.

His role to unite India was quite similar to Gandhiji when he used to bat the whole nation watches him on TV and everyone celebrated his successful innings together. Where politicians and religion play a divisive role in that time Sachin unites country such was his contribution to  India.

When a player like Brain Lara said that he wants his son to be like Sachin then we can easily understand the level of respect Sachin commands.

Aura of Sachin was such that great players like Dravid never got the fame which he deserved as he was playing during the era of Sachin. One may remember that Sachin and Dravid were playing their last CL20 match in finals for their respective teams but because of Sachin, Dravid was overshadowed.

Sachin was so humble that neither he nor his family members try to take advantage of his stature and never boasted about his position.

He was so disciplined that even during Chappel’s tenure a player of his stature accepted the coach’s decision that he will bat at number 4. Unfortunately, Sachin was wrongly given out in the 90’s run by umpires like Steve Buckner and D, Harper but unlike current-day crickets, he never showed any annoyance but he played the cricket just it was expected- a gentleman way!
When a kid used to watch Sachin, he not only leaned straight driver or the concept of letting your work do the talking but also patience, discipline, kindness, and flexibility.

When other players fight in media or the field while playing for a short span for the Indian team he played for team India for 24 years without any such controversy.

During these 24 years, most of these years were such when it was a one-man army and he has to deal with the pressure and expectation of all the world. When the cricket fixing scandal tarnished the image of cricket then his commitment and respect for the game of cricket became very prominent.

He was such a great player that no opposition player wanted to sledge him and whenever someone poked Sachin then he had to face the consequences just like Shoiab Akhtar and Andrew Caddick.

He was only the first player for whom rules were changed to include him in the team but it was he who became the first overseas cricketer to play for Yorkshire county, he started the culture of image buildup companies.

He refused for 1 whooping 35 crores deal of an alcohol brand advertisement considering that the fact it will give a wrong message to youth, a lesson taught to him bu his father.

He even showed his respect for cricket when he refused to an advertisement in which he was supposed to hit the ball with thread and said that he is not bigger than the game.

He was a bit superstitious and no never liked anyone to touch his kit and always kept an image of Lord Ganesha under his kit bag.

During 1999 he lost his father but he skipped only one match and came back to serve his country such was his love for the cricket and his country.

His humbleness was acknowledged all over the world, he got a standing ovation at the Lord’s, he also always respected his fand and everyone enjoyed the chant Sachin Sachin.

When he became MP, then also there was a controversy regarding his attendance but one should also know that the village he adopted in Nellore district is now open defection free and (under Sansad Adarsh gram yojana) is the most developed village adopted by any MP under that scheme, after completing his tenure as MP Sachin donated all his salary too.

So, comparing Sachin with any other player is easy but in reality, no other player can become even 10% of Sachin Tendulkar.

After 7 years of his retirement, there are still lakhs of cricket lovers who hate watching cricket as they no more see Sachin opening for team India.

BOOK REVIEW – “The Saraswati Civilization: A Paradigm Shift in Ancient Indian History”

0

Major General G D Bakshi, the author of the aforementioned book on Saraswati Civilization is not only an accomplished combatant but also a erudite scholar who has written more than thirty three books and many more research papers. Here is a review of his startling book which brings out compilation of several new facts to public discourse on some of the most contentious yet important aspects pertaining to identity of the Indian people.

“Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth” is a law of propaganda often attributed to the Nazi Joseph Goebbels, but has been used so effectively by the dominating Marxists historians in India that even putting across a different viewpoint by staging healthy debates was nearly impossible.

The contentious Aryan-Invasion-Theory (AIT) is one glaring example wherein the one-sided narrative that hinged around deliberate obliviousness to plethora of inconvenient facts as well as body of literature generated since British times around convenient interpretations, has been pushed into Indians’ mass psyche in all these years at every level including in schools through official textbooks blindly supporting such motivated ‘theory’ conceived by the foreign colonial power to pursue their own agenda.

Even the most ardent proponents of AIT now concede that plethora of fallacies entailed into this British construed, yet seeing it so widespread across Indian psyche make one feel disgusted realising the deep prevalence and persistence of this fake narrative which challenges our very identity and has divided us so deep.

The river Saraswati which was till now being purposely called as mythical, as being propounded by the British and nurtured by the Marxist historians, has now been proven beyond doubts thanks to the new finding of various scientific & historical studies.

Clearly, there is more to our history which has been deliberately wrapped under carpet to fulfill divisive agendas. Major General G.D. Bakshi’s book titled “The Saraswati Civilization: A Paradigm Shift in Ancient Indian History”challenges and takes this very agenda head-on.

The book presents a holistic coverage of multifaceted paradigms related to the river Saraswati and thus provides a new definition to the cultural ethos of this land called Aryavarta. In total thirteen chapters, the book holistically elaborates upon all the major aspects concerning the evidences derived as an outcome of the research made to validate the existence of the River Saraswati. Hence, no point is left untouched which is needed to counter those who always rake up the questions challenging the ever existence of this river.

The introductory chapter sets the tone for the narrative which is built in rest of the book very impressively. Beginning with history of invasions to India, Mr. Bakshi brilliantly analyses the repercussions of the British Rule over India. He Writes, “The British Rule had strong overtones of racial arrogance and superiority” which prevented the British from getting themselves amalgamated with the native Indian population hence faced with a strong rebellion of Indians across all castes and creeds. This made them explore the major fault-lines in the then Indian Society, and the most apt one diagnosed by them was caste. Therefore, British made attempts to foster this fault-line by reinforcing separate sub identities within the society. The other fault-line the British found useful for their agenda to be widened was along religious lines and so created rifts between Hindus and Muslims.

Simultaneously, British also made a broader plan to usurp history and rewrite it in the manner which benefits and justifies their presence in India. For this they shattered the age-old Gurukul System and replaced it with the Macaulayian system of education. The aim was to produce loyal and committed English speaking clerks and generate a sense of inferiority in the local population. Picking up the thread from this theme and with help of many foreign Indologists, British propounded the Aryan Invasion Theory (AIT)which was their convenient construed. General Bakshi intelligently elucidates the contradiction inherent in this fake AIT theory, and quotes the biases of some European and American think-tanks perpetuating the societal divide on basis of caste and race, primarily for denigrating the Indic Civilization as exploitative and hegemonic.

The introduction of the book makes a strong case for challenging the colonial narratives and building a complete new underpinning for the logical and true account of the ancient history of India in light of a variety of scientific evidences have come to light.

General Bakshi’s narrative progresses with coalescing the oral tradition regarding the River Saraswati and the scientific evidences, which prove beyond doubt that there used to flow a mighty river in the Northern part of India. He substantiates his point by referring to several detailed Geological studies, satellite imagery studies etc. Besides, archaeological as well as linguistic evidences have been amply provided in this awesome account by General Bakshi to establish the fact that the bulk of settlements had flourished along the banks of River Saraswati along with the Indus river.

In the chapter regarding Geological evidence, Mr. Bakshi by putting forth an interesting analyses by Prof. Damle has very logically depicted, how the geological events which occurred millions of years ago have been befittingly mentioned in Rig Veda analogies.

Likewise, the umpteen evidences coming out of the excavations have authenticated the fact that there exists cultural uniformity between the Indus Saraswati Civilization and the Rig Vedic Culture. The author has brilliantly analysed the whole data available to prove this point. In a very lucid way he puts forth those points which remove the facade of myth over the existence of the river Saraswati. The question that needs to be churned intensively on the points mentioned by the author is that Why would Aryans stream into the land that had just been desiccated by the drying up of the river? The fake AIT does not have any answer to this genuine question.

Some questions have even puzzled me always whenever I read about the culture of The Harappan Civilization, the culture there resembles to the culture what we follow even today, to this quest G.D Bakshi’s book has an answer. He writes, “The continuity of lifestyles, cultural constructs, modes of transport, culinary habits and even the design of pots, pans and ovens, techniques of agriculture, layouts of houses, the basic design of bullock carts etc. are so startling that it defies imagination as to why these have not been noted much earlier than they were?”

The resemblances he identifies point-by-point begin with the profound wisdom of Yoga given by Panini and the quintessential wisdom of the Vedas and the Upanishadas, then refers to the similarity in the Terracotta figurines and seals used now and then in the times of Indus-Saraswati Civilization. Major among them are the seal of Pashupati Nath, Harappan female fertility figurine etc. The detail elucidation of the seals and Terracotta figurines manifests the depth of research done by him, while collecting the material.

There is an exclusive chapter in the book which puts forth the scriptural evidences in support of the river. The Rig Vedic verses amply eulogises the river Saraswati, and the author has reproduced several of these Suktas to prove the importance being given to the river, one of the verses states, “ The River Saraswati alone among these abundant wealth giving streams, arises in the high mountains and flows to the sea. Verily it offered milk to the very thirsty king Nahusha.”

The NadiSukta in Rig Veda is the most distinctive verse which lists the seven mighty streams of the Rig Vedic Civilisational area. The River Saraswati is raised to the status of a divine manifestation, the Goddess of wisdom and learning.

“O Ganga, Yamuna, Sarasvati, Shutudri (Sutlej), Parushni (Iravati, Ravi), follow my praise! O Asikni (Chenab) Marudvridha, Vitasta (Jhelum), with the Arjikiya (Haro) and Sushoma (Sohan), listen o Rivers to these our hymns and accept them joyfully.”

The author touches upon the depiction of the river in various scriptures consecutively beginning with the Vedas to it’s mention in the Epic Mahabharata.

Furthermore, General Bakshi’s expostulates the myth of Aryan Invasion by putting forward various philological, DNA samples and carbon Dating evidences in the most logical manner. The most remarkable is the Baghpat Chariot found in Sonali village at Baghpat(U.P). The Carbon Dating fixes the date to 2000-1800 B.C.E. This predates the Aryan Invasion/Migration date of Muller or Wheeler. In the light of the philological similarities in the grammar of the several languages viz. Sanskrit, Persian, Greek, Latin etc. which created a narrative of Proto Indo European Language, this book gives a befitting response to it’s champions, and presents a complete plausible interpretation.

It is in this way, there is lot more to this book which unravels many new narratives and accounts based on scientific reasoning to prove that till now what has been taught to us regarding our identity is nothing more than a complete untruth, which reader will find extremely fascinating. It is interesting that the author advocates for the need of the Multidisciplinary approach to the problems of Indology. An important aspect which will aid in answering the various questions regarding Indology, for which he suggests holding a Seminar on the style of Copenhagen Convention.

The beauty of this fantastic book lies in its asking for building an indigenous Grand Narrative for India which enables in reclaiming an identity for its people not based on the foreign paradigms. The author in the last chapter tells the readers about the history of how a colonial narrative crushed the sense of pride over their heritage among the Indians which percolated deep into our genes. In order to justify their colonial rule they coined the theories like AIT etc and this slave mentality was furthered by the Macaulayian system of education. The author thereafter, elaborates upon those points which have raised the quest to delve deep into those reasons behind exploring more and more traces of this once mighty river. The writer suggests unique ideas to rejuvenate this marvellous civilization by physically recharging the river and then initiating Saraswati Pilgrimage Tourism.

The book is a paramount contribution by Major General Bakshi towards bring in a renaissance in Indic studies, as it not only challenges those who question the very indigenous-ness of Indians but objectively disarm the Marxists propagandists with diverse set of scientific studies. This book is an important contribution towards destroying the AIT myth by compiling the diverse set of scientific outcomes which are more than sufficient to burry this AIT myth.

The book is very interesting & enthralling read for all those who have penchant for fact-based history writing in Indian perspective. I strongly recommend the book to be a part of every Indian Households to make them aware of their own true identity which has the unparalleled civilization continuity over several millennia.

Overconfident AAP is celebrating too early in Delhi?

0

Despite losing many assembly elections, i.e., all of Delhi ‘s seats in the Lok Sabha election, as well as the 2017 MCD election, why does Kejriwal look so confident?

The answer lies in the fact that as per Kejriwal and party there is no other option other than Kejriwal, in Delhi; the way he has worked in the field of education and health is a landmark example. He has fulfilled almost all the poll promises; his various schemes and freebies are so attractive, that even his haters are confused about what they should criticize the Kejriwal government for.

AAP says that when Kejriwal’s trollers get the benefit of subsidized electricity, free medical tests, quality education, free bus rides for women, and free wifi, then they too, are experiencing a feel-good factor.

But, it is also a matter of fact not everyone wants the subsidy and freebie policy.

AAP is continuously fighting elections on the name of the Delhi model but nowhere its candidates can even save their deposit, the latest humiliation could be seen in Jharkhand where the collective votes of the party are less than total NOTA polled.

The best thing for the AAP government is the absence of clear CM face in Delhi’s BJP and INC. AAP says that Delhi BJP has an internal fight as many leaders of BJP want to be the CM, and this became even more apparent when Mr.Hardeep Puri, announced Manoj Tiwari as the CM, only to clarify within few hours, that he didn’t mean it.

It seems that from Vijay Goel, Vijendra Gupta to Manoj Tiwari, all of them want to be the CM, while the most popular accepted face of Delhi BJP is Dr.Harshvardhan; but his name is still not in the open market and if he becomes CM face, then definitely, he will give AAP a good fight.

Some media has reported that Mr.Hardeep Puri can be a CM face of AAP and it is true then he will pose a threat to AAP as he has a superb image.

The most interesting part is that AAP says that the BJP is afraid to announce someone’s name because other contenders may damage the party, internally. If BJP announces Manoj Tiwari as CM, then it will be a cakewalk for AAP. And because of these reasons, AAP wants BJP to announce its CM candidate.

As per AAP social media team the fact that it was Kejriwal who stopped BJP in Delhi, after Modi’s win in 2014, still haunts BJP, and so they are afraid of declaring their weak candidates against Kejriwal; the work AAP has done has upgraded the expectation levels from a Delhi CM.

AAP seems to be very confident about coming back to power in Delhi but is it so easy, the absence of CM face in Delhi and regularisation of 40lakhs unauthorized housed in Delhi by the Modi government makes this election Modi vs Kejriwal round 2.

AAP says that BJP still wants to depend upon Modi’s brand, Hindutva, Pulwama, Triple Talaq and Article 370 but they don’t want to talk about an economic slowdown, job cuts, and other major issues. The cut in the education budget and onion prices, milk prices which would be an issue of hue and cry in other governments, is fine when it comes to BJP.

Delhi government says it focuses on work and towards the upliftment of the marginalized sections of the society. It has uplifted the quality of life of people in Delhi for sure. The concept of Mohalla clinic is not only being appreciated in Delhi but other governments are also following the same – it has attracted foreign delegates as well.

The absence of a face for CM is not only the issue with BJP but INC as well; both these parties are trying hard to woo voters by leveling allegations against the AAP government and bringing purvanchalis face in the party. But the fact remains, that they have no able CM face or if they do, then they are afraid to announce it against Kejriwal.

Senior leaders of AAP says that Both INC and BJP want to attract voters based on top party leadership and ideology, but they have not come up with any clear vision. The issue of statehood for Delhi, which was a poll promise of BJP, is still an issue of debate. The curtailment of power, by taking away ‘services’ from the AAP government, only increases the controversy; the budget allocation for Delhi also seems very low.Steps such as free electricity and bus rides for women have made the situation worse for the opposition in Delhi, as they can neither oppose it nor accept it.

But, if all this is true and the election is going to be so smooth then why Kejriwal has started the policy of appeasement and his arrogance is not seen these days.

AAP has hired Prashant Kishore and coined the slogan ‘Achhe Beete 5 saal, Lage Raho Kejriwal’ and started the campaign but the hiring of Mr. Kishore has a hidden meaning also that AAP is not so confident as it is showing in public. After losing Lok Sabha badly AAP came up with a slogan that ‘Delhi Me To Kejriwal’ with has also a clear message that now Kejriwal has accepted the defeat and wants to focus on Delhi only.

Now Delhi CM who once used a term like ‘Psychopath’ for PM looks either silent or praises the center as he has understood his stature in front of Modi. Recently only on CAA Kejriwal has opposed the center because of his base vote. By regularising the 40 lakhs houses it has already dented the Kejriwal’s core vote, as everyone known that these were the base votes of AAP and Modi has affected that vote for sure.

The regularisation of 40lakhs unauthorized colony by BJP government, water quality issue in Delhi, construction of Delhi peripheral expressway by Modi government, the alleged involvement of AAP leader on Delhi CAA related violence, arrogance of Kejriwal, habit of maligning the image of anyone who is disliked by the CM Kejriwal, Kejriwal’s style of running the party like a private limited company and sacking of founding members like Prashant Bhushan, Yogendra Yadav, and Kumar Vishwas as well as officials of CM’s teams, constant fight with the LG, no respect to constitutional post like PM, alleging media of bias, using Hindu-Muslim sentiments very smartly, continuous bashing from the court for inaction and spreading false propaganda, the shoot and scoot policy of AAP leaders to level allegation and then change the stand, the stand of Delhi Government of not permitting the prosecution of Kanhaiya Kumar case, apathy in Ankit Saxena case, his MLA’s solidarity stand towards Umar Khalid and party, criticizing all actions of Centre without judicial scrutiny, the continuous change in ideology just for the survival has made the image of Kejriwal as a survivalist leader, his statement after Lok sabha 2019 loss that Muslim didn’t vote at the last moment has only tarnished the image. Many leaders of this party with a difference are facing corruption charges and criminal cases.

The over expenditure in Advertisement and image of leaders like Amatullah Khan(accused of assaulting erstwhile CS Anshu Prakash and Jamia Violence), the blame game politics over delay in metro corridor and registration of unauthorized colonies, the inaction, and non-usage of fund for pollution control will add trouble for AAP for sure.

Also, Modi and Shah take the major move at the last moment and changes the game, so we should wait and see something surprising will come for sure.

Having said that, the AAP government also needs to be very cautious, as they too have a long list of controversies, regarding their stand on various issues. It needs to be very clear so that they do not repeat the mistakes they made in the Lok Sabha elections.

The 2020 election is going to be a very interesting one, as after 5 years of a power tussle, and allegations, it is again, going to be Modi vs Kejriwal.

Population explosion : Real threat

0

Population explosion, according to oxford dictionary, is a sudden large increase in size of population. Whole world have gone through this phenomenon because of various reasons in the last two centuries. India, our country, has also been seriously affected by the population explosion. In the present time India stands with a huge population count of about 1370 million, while the planets most populated nation China stands with a population count of 1400 million.

According to a UN study it was estimated that India would overtake china in the number of humans in the next decade. This is obvious too, as India is having no family planning program while our neighbor had started the same program long time ago in 1979. India’s population will continue to grow faster than china. It is an important fact that china has 3 times of landmass than that of India. The total fertility rate (TFR) that is number of children born to a woman, provided she experienced age specific fertility rate and completely survived her reproductive life. The fertility rate of India is 2.33 as per world bank data, which means its population will keep growing in near future. Since the TFR has been declining constantly so the percentage change in population of India has also been decreasing, but even a slight percentage change is large enough in such a huge population.

The issue of population explosion has again come into light, as PM Modi, in his most anticipated speech on the seventy third independence day of India, arouse this issue from the red fort. This issue is sensitive but significant too. PM has compared population control with patriotism, in the hope of changing the public mindset about the family planning. This is not the first time when the government has discussed  the issue of population explosion. It is interesting that India was the first country to adopt the family planning in 1952.

In 1966 Ministry of health created separate department for family planning. The worst scenario of family planning program emerged in the emergency, the black episode in Indian independence history, when about 100 million people were forced to have vasectomy. But the condition has not improved even after these measures. A voluntary family planning policy was also initiated in 1977  but did not yield any result.

China’s communist government apprehended the dangers of over population and started the compulsory one child policy.Although it worked well and the population of China got controlled and the per capita income also raised, but it crushed the freedom of Chinese people and the number of taxpayers has also decreased significantly. Although India’s fertility rate is declining faster than other countries but this effects  population insignificantly because of its huge number.Population explosion’s harms are not imaginary, they lie in near future and most importantly most of its harms are in the present generation.

Over population is the main cause of poverty in India or elsewhere. Every intellectual  person who has ever, by mishap, wandered into the wilderness of poor people, knows the fact, that due to some reasons they are unable to plan family, and afterwards, they get  deep and deep into poverty as they do not have enough resources to maintain that huge family and resulting generations are more poor. The live example of this situation is china where per capita income has become 20 times of its initial value after adopting one child policy. More per capita income is a direct sign of removal of poverty. Other harms of overpopulation are widespread hunger, malnutrition of children, young ones and even cattle.

Poverty is the greatest curse and with the elimination of poverty, a major part of sorrows can be ended, and with that the country can  lead toward a happy nation. In the condition of overpopulation, the number of poor are more than taxpayers, thus even in a welfare state like India, welfare programs remain insufficient to eradicate poverty. Moreover, if there existed a prosperous and small population, there would not be any need of programs like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

In the present scenario, there is a more need of discussing the ‘measures to control population’ explosion than the term ‘population explosion’. Among the measures to control population, government should at first try remove the ‘taboo’ tag from the family planning process. Slogans like ‘Bachhe Do Hi Achhe’ and promotion of different types o contraceptive methods are among them. Education is key to all locks of problems. The most fertility rate is in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar which have the lowest literacy level. If all the students, not only science students, are given the education of family planning and are warned about the harms of overpopulation, then such scenario will not arise in future. Family planning education should be added in every subject and questions of some marks should get place in exams in the way like ‘Road Safety’ subject was added by Rajasthan Government.

For the education of workers and other school passed persons, Family Planning room must be opened in all public hospitals, so that these persons might get advice on family planning without any hesitation, and my also get advice on contraceptives in a single room.Compulsory rules are not appropriate in such sensitive manners and are worse in a diverse country like India. People feel humiliation, force, and prisoner like feeling in compulsory rules, and this leads them towards rebellion. Incentives encourage them to do things as was in Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.

Government should organize programs for awarding the family planners. Also depriving multi-child parents from welfare schemes is very bad because they are the one who need government assistance. Deprivation from welfare schemes should be done in certain cases like when after two girl children, they increase family for the want of boy child. This will also lead to women empowerment. Laws should be made for easy filing of complaints, when one partner forces other for having a child, this will lead to decrease in domestic violence as well as decrease in population.

Government should set a minimum time limit for having the next child, this will lead to proper maintenance and nutrition of the futures of the nation. Even after all these measures, the problem persist then governmet should take more strong steps like preventing multi-child parents from being in government service, fighting any of the elections etc.Conclusively, there is a strong need of population control but with exercising the population control measures, government should concentrate on skill development programs. Had there been 1370 million skilled citizens, India would have crossed the limits of development.

Margazhi Musings- Octogenarian Umayalpuram Mama a Maverick Mirudangist

Imagine Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander, the West Indian master blaster, all of 82 years at the Lords. Planting his left leg out, at that age, and  arrogantly too, even while chewing gum disdainfully, and picking up a yorker, delivered at his feet, and heave ho over square leg, from where the fielder was just moved. Stunning and stupefying, it sure would be. It is a shot that is not given to any and many.

Only a genius of his calibre, is capable of dismissing the bowlers not the ball, as Cardus eulogised Sir Donald Bradman. He always intended to dominate and shone brighter than all the performers, including his team mates. And on his day, he made the audience/everyone around, dance to  his music, in  joy, as well as made them cry and cry for more. At 82, the man looks good for many more and his fingers played magic on the wood. (He has of course invented a Mirudangam made of glass), It seems the man consciously avoided shaking hands for fear of injuring his fingers which were his ‘life divine’, as he put it. Excuse me, one is talking about Sangita Kalanidhi (Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Shri) Umayalpuram Sivaraman, the Mirudangam maestro, at the Music Academy, on 24th Dec, 2019, at 18.45 hrs, accompanying Sikkil Gurucharan. Let us accept and say Sikkil sang  to Sivaraman’s tunes. Not an insult, by any means, considering the class, pedigree and standing of Sivaraman.

Listen to this exchange between two pairs of rasikas, as we were coming out. It captures the quintessence of who Sivaraman is and where he is placed in the pantheon of performers. Rasika 1, “Sir, Was it fair for Umayalpuram to swallow the youngster Sikkil, the way he did it.” Rasika 2, “Sir, it is blasphemous of you to even think so. Sikkil must be revelling in the shadow of Sivaraman. That Umayalpuram accompanied him, is total recognition from the master blaster. Sikkil would feel proud to be on Academy stage with the nonpareil octogenarian”.  Rasika 3, “Adi, Thani Avarthanam time (when the percussionists are given their exclusive space) is always time for the Rasikas to take leave of the concert. But when it is Umayalpuram Mama, the rasikas stay put and rush to the hall from even the canteen. He is mesmerising. Wonder what his fingers are made of. The ease with which he thumps the two sides of the Mirudangam, seems as if he is  gracefully extracting the swarams which are already packed inside.” Rasika 4, “True. Even you were disciplined enough not to leave during Thani Avarthanam, which the artistes and I always found offensive. But could never persuade you otherwise. Umayalpuram is a godsend for the likes of you.” Mami’s repartee to Mama was  a perfect jibe.

Sivaraman was formally trained by more than four Gurus but he was his own Man for he never sacrificed his ‘originality’ to  stamp his class,  the world over. Whenever he performed, he made the ‘others’ dance to his tune  and the audience thronged to see him, in the act. His dexterity and skill set  to be at the forefront and outdo the others, ‘got the goat of his fellow performers, but he cared little’ as master critic Subbudu mused. And Umayalpuram says, at 82, why should he change? Yes, why should he change? We love you, Mama,  the way you are.

Initiated into his discipline, at all of 5 years, and performing on stage for over 75 years now, with a host of performers, his 80th birthday was celebrated, a couple of years ago, with artistes from the world over,  paying their respects/tributes to the one and only Umayalpuram Sivaraman.

It was a Kaleidiscopic day to remember with strobe lights and all, not only for the master but for the huge assembly at the Academy, throughout the day, in highlighting the multifaceted maestro and his brilliant essays on various stages. The anecdotes that each one shared conveyed the virtuoso of the player m, born to dominate and carry the day for the team he performed, even as he excelled himself all the time. The artistes and academicians on stage were singularly poetic about the grammar of his music,   yet the innovations he brought to bear which he only was capable of.

It was a memorable day then, drawn to a close, when the hero of the day gave his moving acceptance speech. To begin with, he opened with a cricketing metaphor and conceded that despite his finesse, skill, training, experience and ability gained over the years, on stage, this one day he was clean bowled first ball just as Sir Don scored a Duck, bowled by Eric Hollies of England, in his final test appearance. Probably misty eyed. He said that it was a humbling experience for someone who merely pursued his passion for 75 years and made a living out of it too and had the opportunity to go places and make friends too, including his companion for over 50 years, his better half.

There is even a documentary Overtone- by Rajiv Menon- the award winning cinematographer- with no Overtones of Eulogy, but a straight  from the heart, frank as it was- capturing the essence of Sivaraman,  not only as a performer par excellence but as a simple human being too.

His mystical, musical journey has included, accompanying almost all the greats of Carnatic Music as Ariyakudi Ramanuja Aiyangar, Alathur Brothers, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, the roll call of rock stars, as it were, and now playing with the same felicity, eagerness and enthusiasm, not for, but with the younger lot. He  has always been effusive in praising the cultural connect that his musical journey has been and the breaking of all divisions, across barriers and all across the world.

Yet, Yet, Yet, what is true is that he has never ever performed on stage, as an accompanying mirugandist, to female vocalists or instrumentalists. Not even to M S Subbulakshmi, D K Pattammal, M L Vasanthakumari. While he regards, respects his better half, and never fails to give her the due, it is stupefying as to why he has never performed as accompanist to female performers. Why? Is he a misogynist? Does he think they were ‘lesser’ performers? He has never gone on record and the mystery and speculation continue. So be it, as a fascinating, unexplained, unexplored, unrevealed  facet of this maverick Jambavan of percussion instruments.

Incidentally, Sikkil Gurucharan sang beautifully and as any other vocalist, yielded space to Umayalpuram mama willingly, lest Mama a la King Richards, put his foot out to stamp his class. Sivaraman’s tete e tete with Guruprasad on the Kanjira was no interlude or interference,  but took its place left, right and centre, keeping the throng, including Sikkil and Sanjeev on the violin,  in a trance.

Sonia Gandhi spreads blatantly false rumours, violates law

0

Watch this video in which Congress interim President and former full-time party chief Sonia Gandhi addresses the nation.

Particularly see the time between 1:54 to 2:27 in this video, which is tweeted by the Congress Party itself from its official handle, which is an address to the nation by Sonia Gandhi.

In this Sonia Gandhi says: “नागरिकता संशोधन कानून भेदभावपूर्ण है। नोटबंदी की तरह एक बार फिर एक-एक व्यक्ति को अपनी एवं अपने पूर्वजों की नागरिकता साबित करने के लिए लाइन में खड़ा होना पड़ेगा”. This means: “The Citizenship Amendment Bill is discriminatory. Like during demonetization, every individual will have to stand in queue to prove his and his ancestors’ citizenship.” She also says after this that the proposed national level NRC will cause maximum damage to the weak and poor sections of the society.

Sonia Gandhi is openly spreading false rumours, and that too at a very sensitive time. When the need of the hour is to maintain calm and appeal for calm and peace in the country, she is spreading blatant inflammatory and defamatory lies. A person of the level of Sonia Gandhi, who is the President of the largest Opposition party, was, according to many accounts, the Super Prime Minister of India for 10 years from 2004-2014, and the Chairperson of NAC and the UPA, is doing blatant violation of law!

CAA is simply a one-time amnesty for minorities of Pakistan, Bangladesh & Afghanistan already in India on or before 31 Dec 2014. It is not applicable even to Hindus and other non-Muslim minorities of these countries who came to India on or after 1 January 2015. No one, NOT A SINGLE Indian citizen, has to ‘prove’ citizenship of ancestors or of himself under the CAA. Despite this, Sonia says that under CAA EVERY individual will have to stand in queue to prove his and his ancestors’ citizenship. Legal action needs to be taken against Sonia Gandhi for spreading false rumours and blatantly lying and misleading the whole country in a disgusting way.

When the proposed national-level NRC has not been introduced at all, its draft too is not yet made, Sonia already claims that the national level NRC will cause maximum damage to the weak and poor sections of the society. This is further scaremongering and baseless claims by Sonia Gandhi.

Of course, all this has been totally ignored by the mainstream media. Imagine if any big BJP leader, say L K Advani, had made an incorrect claim on such a major issue during the UPA era. Or, even in the present Narendra Modi rule. A large section of the mainstream media would have crucified him or her.

Here, the whole media has let Sonia Gandhi go scot-free since a large section of it is an interested party in the conflict, wanting to spread false rumours to somehow defame the Modi Government and paint it as anti-Muslim, wanting violence and protests so that the government is on the defensive, rather than a neutral reporter of facts.
