Part-8: The issue of giving MSP prices to all farmers

0

The people advancing this argument have absolutely no understanding of how markets work. Around 60-80% of foodgrain procurement in India currently happens through the private sector. Some pay the MSP prices but most do not. Forcing every private player to pay MSP will bankrupt them as the market doesn’t demand it. This will destroy even the existing supply chain by making them go out of business. And if they go out of business, every other food crop will also be impacted and then the demand will be for the government to extend MSP to all foodcrops. The logic being that if MSP can be forced on 26 crops, why not extend it to every agricultural produce in the country?

The end result will be a majority of foodgrains (60-80%) will not be purchased by private players and will be being stuck with farmers because nobody wants their produce. Punjab is the most unequal state in India with small and marginal farmers have the smallest land holdings. Each one of the small and marginal farmers in Punjab and other states will then come close to penury and that will force the Indian Government to buy all the foodgrains which the private sector will not buy.

Currently buying even 20-40% of the rice and wheat costs the Indian Government around 1.5 lakh crores. Buying another 60-80% could set the Government back by 7.5 lakh crores just for wheat and rice. Accepting MSP for 26 crops means that the Government will need to end up buying all the produce of these farmers, if the private sector does not buy. If MSP is extended across all crops in India, the government can then just shut down completely. This is something the mischievous media refuses to discuss and protesting farmers seem to ignore. Where will the Government get the additional 6 lakh crores? Should the Government spend all its time on saving agriculture (18% of its GDP) and ignore every other sector (the balance 82%)? Should they be procuring produce which nobody in external or internal markets wants to buy. Because the MSP prices are uncompetitively priced higher than markets, it can’t even be exported and will just rot in the granaries. Political interference in the laws of economic laws of demand and supply will only have devastating consequences.

One important reason for private companies not paying MSP is a structural issue which nobody, including farmers, wants to address. The catch is that unlike governments which absorb supply chain inefficiencies, the private sector has to pay an inordinate cost to store and transport foodgrains. There is negligible supply chain and storage infrastructure in India. Governments in the past have been ineffective in addressing these issues. They had unwisely sacrificed the long-term interests of farmers in favor of votebank subsidies like free power and increased MSP prices. Other than them being counterproductive, these subsidies go straight to the hands of the richest farmers. Why does less than 1% of India pay income tax? Why are the rich farmers who also get enormous subsidies, exempt from paying tax?

Sugarcane farmers already have a model where something akin to minimum MSP is expected from all procurers. Because of price guarantees, most farmers have stopped diversifying their crops and moved en-masse to making sugar for the mills. It has been a mess where the prices of sugarcane are well above international prices and extremely uncompetitive. Because Governments don’t have funds to pay farmers the exorbitant prices, farmers keep waiting two years and more to get paid. Much of the Maharashtra suicides derive from unpaid sugarcane dues. When asked to diversify to more remunerative crops, their response is either “Sugarcane is the crop of our forefathers and we are carrying forward the legacy. Why would we grow anything else?” or a misplaced sense of pride “A cane farmer has more respect than someone who grows vegetables.” Economic logic doesn’t seem to matter. Governments need to rethink why they would want to subsidize a crop which is overpriced in the world market and has no buyers. Why not just pay farmers directly for produce they don’t make?

Supply chain logistics can only be built by massive investments in storage, roads and transportation. It requires deep pockets to finance these enterprises. While sectors like the internet economy and agricultural supply chains need enormous resources, rich countries like the United States managed this by massive government investments in the beginning and later opening it to the private sector. But for poor countries like India which can’t afford the initial massive investments, either they sacrifice their short-term gain for the long-term benefits like what China did (a concept which most Indians don’t seem to appreciate or understand) or they lean towards corporates with deep pockets like Indian or MNC conglomerates.

Blind mistrust of corporates is dangerous. There are only two options for investments, Governments and the private sector. If governments have not delivered, it has to be the private sector. There are no further choices. While people seem to relish blaming the Ambani and Adani duo for corporate excess, they are among the few best in class Indian companies which have proven themselves over the years in energy and telecom. Reliance Jio created value where nothing existed. When nobody thought of investing in the Indian internet economy and when few Indians had access to the internet, today every tech company is tying up with Jio to enter India. It was impossible to think a couple of years back that Indians would lead most other countries in data usage. Once someone does the plumbing for infrastructure, only then can other players like the average entrepreneur enter the space and expand the pie.

Techdictocracy : The new age digital martial law of Silicon Valley

Big Tech autocratic aristocrats who run the tech giants Facebook, Google, Amazon, Apple, Twitter & many more in the silicon valley have demonstrated themselves as the most powerful body of individuals in the world. The nexus of Tech Tyrants in a coordinated action banned & deleted accounts of President Donald Trump. Earlier a day before major tech corporations of silicon valley deleted the post of President Trump & restricted access to him for limited time. The action comes day after protesters stormed the Capitol Hill building after President Donald Trump refused to accept the validity of the US Presidential held in November 2020.

Twitter banned Trump personal account fearing the President might incite once again. Following Twitter footsteps Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg announced extension of ban indefinitely. Following that Google, Apple, Amazon suspended social-media app Parler which was growing platform for Trump supporters.

The coordinated action against President Donald Trump smells conspiracy of involvement of Deep State which is special interest group of elite aristocrats consisting of Military Industrial complex, pharmaceutical corporations, health insurance companies and the Tech Tyrants who are part of the nexus. President Trump actions from withdrawing troops from war ravaged Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, bringing the price of prescription drugs affected the business interest in United States.

And President Donald Trump brazen actions for favoring American citizens certainly upset ted the lobbyist (both Republican & Democrats) in Washington DC. To censure President Donald Trump Freedom of Speech & Expression, it was imperative to block his social media accounts thereby ensuring digital blockade and build wall of censorship to prevent him communicate his views to his supporters. The recent action to block Trump FOS & FOE by the Tech Tyrants suggest that United States is turning into Communist state and Tech giants think they have more say than the leader of the free world.

The rules set by the aristocrats of Tech Tyrants can be termed as #Techdictocracy. The new age Digital Marshall law norms of these Tech Tyrants resembles to standards adopted Chinese dictator Xingping. It is no secret that the Tech Tyrants have adopted double standards with no standard policies set in place to suspend accounts which incite violence. When former Malaysian Premier Mahatir Mohammad had tweeted that Muslims have a right to be angry and “kill millions of French people” for the “massacres of the past”, Cedric O, France’s Secretary for Digital Sector urged Twitter to suspend the account of the former Malaysian prime minister and in response the tech giant deleted Mahatir Tweet.

Terrorist organization Al Qaeda, Taliban have made Facebook pages, Telegram channels, and Twitter accounts to communicate to the world depicting them as legitimate power representing people in exile. ISIS has used social media to recruit thousands of non-Arab foreigners through its propaganda, projecting itself as global caliphate in the Islamic world. The oppressive communist regime of China who have been charged with carrying out ethnic genocide of Uighur Muslim minorities & Tibetan people for decades have been allowed to have Twitter accounts.

Facebook has been accused of leaking data to Cambridge Analytica which had used the sensitive information to build up Psychological user profiles of Facebook users and use them to influence voters in many countries. Media reports emerged stating that Cambridge Analytica’s former CEO Alexander Nix,met Rahul Gandhi, former union ministers Jairam Ramesh and P Chidambaram for data mining of Facebook posts and tweet to influence voters for the 2019 national election. Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg has contributed $350 million to the Center for Tech and Civic Life (CTCL), a left leaning organization which operates in strongly Democratic areas.

And in the name of cracking down on hate speech the Tech Tyrant has blocked influential supporters of right wing nationalist party BJP as their ecosystem have been infested by Leftist / Jehadis sympathizers. And its time to reign in tech companies who operate in India. American companies like Apple who operate in China comply with Chinese government internet censorship, blocking access to Western news sources, information about human rights and religious freedoms, and privacy-enhancing apps that would circumvent the country’s pervasive online surveillance regime. American Tech giant Google whose services are blocked by China, is reportedly working on Project Dragonfly, censored Chinese search engine which is designed to snoop on users to link their phone numbers to the search queries thereby increasing risk of oppression among middle kingdom citizens.

The nexus of Deep State & Tech Tyrants is clearly evident and India needs to bring in strict laws to ensure that privacy of the citizens of India are safeguarded. With 3.14 Billion active users Facebook / Snapchat / Instagram is the largest social media platform in the planet & Google, the most popular search engine controls 90% of the global search engine market. And its possible for these platforms to be used to influence user behavior for targeted political gains and causing instability by spreading fake news and distorted information. The Biden Administration may publicly state of strengthening relations with India & score brownie points with settling immigration issues affecting Indian citizens but we should not forget that Vice President elect Kamala Harris has expressed solidarity with Kashmiris and stated to intervene when India abrogated the special status.

Modi Government should keep eye on leftist hawks like Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal & others and express their reservations for interference in internal affairs in India. The approach with the Biden administration should be calibrated and we should monitor American Tech Tyrants for ensuring that Indian users are not under surveillance of any form, their personal information & social interactions are not recorded. Also Indian Government must ensure that users should have alternative to these platforms and any attempt to stifle competition by Tech Tyrants that hurts emerging platforms through any means affecting the creativity, innovation should be punished.

To counter the global Tech Tyrants the Indian Government has launched its own Atmanirbhar App Store and will not charge the 30 per cent fee on all applications. The Indian Government had raised concern over snooping by Chinese company Zhenhua Data Information Technology on its top politicians and the threat posed by American Tech Tyrants should not be taken lightly.

Part-7: Will farmers get a bad deal by privatization?

0

Indians have a paternalistic and socialistic approach to privatization. Nehru nationalized Indian Airlines hoping to provide top notch service and to make it accessible to everyone. Indira Gandhi did the same with Indian banks to make it accessible to the poor. The end result was extraordinary corruption, shutting the doors to the poor, rampant inefficiency and a bloated bureaucracy. Air India is an example of a guzzler which needs tens of thousands of crores a year to keep a bankrupt enterprise afloat.

It is rather inane to say that Mandis would shut down because of privatization as the Indian Government is duty bound to provide foodgrains to the very poor through the PDS in the foreseeable future. Hence, Governments will need to keep procuring. The question here is not of Government procurement, but of the extraordinary glut produced by farmers of produce, the market doesn’t need. Should it rot in the granaries or should the private sector get it?

Rather than blame the previous leaders, it is perplexing to comprehend why present-day Indians mistrust industry and hope that Government intervention alone will solve all their problems. And why is the government purchasing foodgrains instead of markets in this age? In India, whether making jam through Kissan or cars through Maruti, the government is expected to step in to provide every service. What people don’t realize is that Governments worldwide have historically done a poor job in replacing the private sector. The examples of Russia and Venezuela with food shortages and long lines waiting for food, are examples of how disastrous government control can be.

To be fair, some Indian private sector companies have been very corrupt and inefficient in the past. They have cunningly used Governmental socialistic restrictions on competition through licenses, to maintain their own monopolies. The reason why Indians got a bad deal is actually because of stunted competition and monopoly cartels. The solution will have to be more privatization and open market competition rather than less competition.  Unless we learn to trust the average Indian to innovate and make profits, government control will never find a solution. We have already seen the havoc which government control has inflicted over 60 years, hence there is no hope in going back to status quo.

Take the example of South Korea. At one time, they were among the poorest countries in the world. President Park in the 1960’s unleashed reforms to industrialize Korea and create a buzzing private sector. Because Korea was so behind the rest of the world, he divided the economy across conglomerates (chaebols) and gave them time, resources and space to grow. Within a couple of decades, companies like LG, Samsung, Hyundai and Kia Motors compare with the best of companies worldwide. Samsung alone contributes to 17% of South Korea’s GDP.

Hence inordinate distrust of the private sector only keeps the people poor and foolish. An average South Korean makes around 31362 USD a year compared to 2009 USD a year for an average Indian. Infact the GDP per capita number for India of today is comparable to South Korea of 1980. We are 40 years behind the income trajectory of South Korea.

Part-6: Are the protests non-political?

0

Just look at who is driving the protests in the enclosed list. We see the following – a bunch of purely political parties and the Bharatiya Kisan Union (highlighted in yellow). The President of the Bharatiya Kisan Union is Mahendra Tikait, the son of the same leader Mahendra Tikait who brought the Rajiv Gandhi government to its heels in 1988. Mahendra Tikait belongs to the Rashtriya Lok Dal, a Jat and farmer party, which has an alliance with the Samajwadi party in Uttar Pradesh and fought against the BJP. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, it was galling for him to lose his election deposits by getting just 9539 votes against the more than 5.2 lakh votes for the BJP. A person who got 9539 votes claims to represent all farmers in India and the media too gives him a free pass. It is fine for protests to be political as it is the job of the opposition to oppose, but protestors to claim no political bias is blatant hypocrisy.

Hypocrisy is abundant in Indian politics and academia. While the ruling party has accused the Congress, SAD and AAP of both promising and supporting changes in APMC earlier and now walking back on their word, these parties in turn accuse the BJP of the same hypocrisy of opposing farm law reform during Congress rule. Almost every party had agreed to agricultural reform in the past, and it is blatant politics to oppose it now.

Academia is no exception to the hypocrisy all around. Kaushik Basu and Raghuram Rajan, both chief economic advisors who had preached about APMC reform and private sector involvement now claim that private sector would exploit farmers and that the laws should be repealed. Rajan once said “The private sector should be allowed to operate in developing these market linkages.” A pity that economists are worse than politicians and don’t have any moral courage to say the truth.

Data sharing is here to stay and for long

0

Mandatory #WhatsApp privacy policy update will now allow Whatsapp to share all your WhatsApp calls, messages, contacts, profile data, group data to Facebook, with your permission. This is a dystopian nightmare for any right-thinking person as #privacy is a cornerstone of any technology revolution. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même — the more that changes, the more it’s the same thing. However, 90%+ of existing WhatsApp users will shrug off and agree to the new terms without a second thought. What is more disconcerting is far too many are either unaware or apathetic or simply trust that Whatsapp’s new terms are benign and always will be.

What is ironic is the fact that how can #Facebook be very serious about privacy whose raison d’etre and growth strategy is to track, monitor, and use people’s data and its patterns to provide its service. If a private conversation is eavesdropped by a product, then its trustworthiness becomes questionable and skepticism about the company turns into outright disbelief. All in the name of ‘convenience’, people pay an exorbitant price for the ‘privilege’ of potentially being under someone’s microscope. Privacy and security are abstract concepts and thus aren’t compelling. The glaring hole here is no one likes to sacrifice convenience for security. On the shoulders of these obligated changes, ride the profits of many “modern” robber barons. The entire purpose of this dubitable privacy policy is data-rape.

Facebook’s excuse for collecting data from its range of products to improvise its service is sheer baloney. The downside of this new policy is that there will always be some lascivious twats in the company who will snoop on your private lives under the guise of improvising service.

There may never be an end to data theft and data leak, not until there is a massive data breach involving people’s private data, that the majority of people finally wake up and decide enough is enough. But there was the Equifax data breach, that effectively splayed open the lives of at least half the people in the United States to identity thieves, and what happened after that? Nothing. All our identity information may be being bought and sold right now and we’ll never know until we find our accounts drained and gigantic loans fraudulently made in our names, ruining our lives.

Corporates have indoctrinated a philosophy that ‘Sharing is normal, privacy means you have something to hide, people with something to hide are bad and wrong and probably criminals or terrorists or pedophiles or other undesirables.’ People have been convinced that nothing about their lives is worth anything, therefore, it’s not worth protecting the privacy of anyway, so they’re trading something worthless (privacy) for convenience. Companies like Facebook or Google or Amazon or Microsoft etc. could be collecting personally identifiable data on each one of their users and lying through their teeth about it, and either selling the data to ‘third party partner companies’ or using it in their own marketing departments to sell you more things that likely will also spy on you and collect more data on you.

Unfortunately, Whatsapp has become a verb, an essential service just like Google. There is no other contemporary messaging platform that has become as ubiquitous and relevant as Whatsapp. Even if one is wary of new privacy updates, one cannot switch easily to another messaging platform because of Whatsapp’s ubiquitousness, relevancy, and intuitiveness. Whatsapp has reached such a critical mass that one will become obsolete, if not on it. With its statuses, payments, groups, and in-app-business-ecosystem with a possibility of third-party service integration, it’s a mini social network in and of itself. Whatsapp seamlessly facilitates the exchange of 100 billion messages per day. i.e. 1,157,407 messages per second. No other messaging platform doesn’t even attempt any of that and hence won’t be able to make even a dent in WhatsApp’s empire. Unless programmers figure out an equivalent easy to use, end-to-end encrypted messaging platform that respects user’s privacy, switching to other platforms remains an elusive goal.

#Signal is proliferating precipitately and helping spread end-to-end encryption to everyone. Signal is viewed by security experts as the gold standard for secure mobile messaging. Signal’s servers do not get to see phone contacts in the phone book, as the numbers are hashed beforehand to muddy the trial. Signal does not have a record of your contacts, social graph, conversation list, location, user avatar, user profile name, group memberships, group titles, or group avatars. But it’s adoption rate is really poor and is mostly preferred by privacy diehards, activists, and cybersecurity nerds.

The data sharing is here to stay at least for the time being. It’ll take changing hearts and minds before that changes.

Impact of stimulus on asset class leading to higher public debt & possible debt defaults

0

The global liquidity surge due to expanded balance sheets of central banks around the world has led to surge in value of houses, stocks, bitcoins depicting strong inflation. The value of the currency in circulation drops when the Central Banks prints currency and this result in the drop in purchasing power due to too much of cash in a stagnant economy. The lab engineered global pandemic of Wuhan in 2020 has caused collapse of small & medium Business enterprises, led to spike in massive unemployment, restriction in movements, widespread substance abuse.

And the stimulous money printed to provide dole outs to the masses has actually led to rise in Consumer borrowing, educational loans, auto loans, mortgage debt, credit card debts. The cost of living is going up and Consumers are borrowing from the future to spend in the present. The debt fuel spending cant go on forever and day of reckoning will arive when you will have to service the debt. As the popular saying is “If we do not inherit earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”.

For example in United States the American households are receiving $2,000 and this M1 money supply is recipe of inflation in the economy with all round increase in prices of assets class. And this stimulus money actually penalizes the genuine tax payers. The total federal outstanding US Debt has recently jumped to $27.5 Trillion Dollars and that’s roughly 106% of GDP.The debt obligations of America is higher than GDP of many countries. A default in the US Treasury would be catastrophic to the world economy with its interconnected banking systems.

The global pandemic has affected India’s economic activity after government imposed lockdowns. The fiscal stimulus provided by the government through Prime Minister Garib Kalyan Yojana, for poor, urban and rural workers, and those in need of immediate attention to tackle the economic crisis has led to sharp rise in India’s public debt to GDP ratio hit record high of 90% in 2020. The ratio was 72.3 per cent in 2019 and 68.8 per cent five years ago in 2015.

The debt-to-GDP ratio shows how likely a country is to pay off its debt. The higher the ratio, the less likely the country will repay its debt and the higher its risk of default. Investors often look at this ratio to evaluate the government’s ability to fund its debt. According to a World Bank report, if the debt-to-GDP ratio of a country exceeds 77 per cent for a prolonged duration, it slows down economic growth. High public debt will lead to reduced expenditure in Development projects and this would lead to higher taxes to augment revenues and cover up the deficit. The currency circulation has gone up because of liquidity injection by RBI during the pandemic. According to data released by the Reserve Bank of India, currency in circulation grew by Rs 5,01,405 crore between January 1, 2019, and January 1, 2020. Overall, it has gone up to Rs 27,70,315 crore, up 22% from the previous year.

Now the question is will the Central Banks around the world will continue create more debt to pay off their previous balance? India’s fiscal deficit touched 115% of the budgeted target in the first half of 2020-21. The Indian Government Interest payment liability is around Rs.6 Lakh crore year and that is about one fourth of the total budgeted expenditure. And fixing the mismatch should be the first order priority of the government.

With the Fed Balance sheet currently at $ 7.4 Trillion & set to expand to between $8.5 trillion and $10 trillion by the end of 2021 we shall find continue rise in prices of commodities across the globe leading to possible defaults of accumulated debts in years to come. The Government might force to nationalize some sectors to bridge the deficit. And this will force the world towards debt slavery and the reset might be introduction of Global Digital currency. If you felt that 2020 was volatile, then gear up for 2021 which shall be more turbulent. And with hyperinflation setting in, stock markets will soar further and Bitcoin is inching higher soaring by 800% in 2020. Its time to book your gains in the capital markets and shift to bullion Gold / Silver as the economy in the main street has no correlation with Wall Street / Dalal Street touching new high. Its purely liquidity driven market and its time to move to safer avenues of Investment.

Part-5: Are farmers from all over India protesting?

0

It is silly to say that Indian farmers are protesting. While much of the protests are political, most of the protests seem to be from one state, Punjab.

To understand why, it would help to understand that Punjab rice farmers sell 100% of their produce through MSP compared to say 1% in a state like West Bengal. Farmers from just 3 states – Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh account for 56% of all wheat and rice procurement by the Government. Hence Punjab enjoys something close to a monopoly when it comes to wheat and rice procurement from farmers. As is the problem with monopolies, they are not sustainable forever.

The Indian Government at some point will need to understand that India is bigger than just Punjab and Haryana. MSP procurement is meant for poor farmers in remote regions across India and is not an exclusive scheme for rich farmers in the richest states. Farmers in Punjab are the richest in India with an average monthly net income of Rs 16,020 (compared to an Andhra farmer who makes Rs 5842 or a Gujarati farmer who makes Rs 3523). Other states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana are already complaining of being discriminated against and the Government is turning its attention there by building storage and transportation networks.

Secondly, only 6% of produce are being sold under MSP. This means that more than 90% of farmers don’t use MSP to sell their produce. If the huge majority of farmers are not using MSP to sell, why should they care about MSP guarantees. Clearly, nobody outside the Punjabi and Haryana farmers have much stake in the current farmer reform discussion. Why should they protest if they don’t even avail the service?

Hence contrary to mischievous media reports that “All Indian Farmers are up in arms”, it would be more accurate to say that “Rich Punjabi farmers, middlemen and loansharks are up in arms” against agricultural reform. Even their demands are uncompromising – stop all reform and go back to status quo, however terrible it may have been. Which sensible poor farmer would say that the previous system had the best possible outcome and reform should be stopped at all costs.
