Hindi as a national language – Pioneering thoughts of Veer Savarkar

0

Veer Savarkar (Shri Vinayak Damodar Savarkar), a name that evokes extreme reactions is was one of the greatest freedom fighters who was sentenced for two life imprisonments with extreme hardships and his endurance is something that we are in awe of.

How can someone who has been in “Kala Pani” and that too going through phases of solitary confinement continue to work for a national cause?

When someone’s physical and mental conditions are at their abyss, how can someone take care of fellow prisoners, organize them, educate them and build a nationalistic feeling all along with severe constraints and restrictions imposed by the Jail authorities and staff?

One has to read more to understand the extent of hardships that were meted out to the prisoners especially the political prisoners at the Cellular Jail in Port Blair at Andamans.

Savarkar was born in Nashik (Maharashtra) in 1883. He was sentenced for two life sentences in 1907.

This article focusses on Savarkar’s beliefs and efforts towards promoting Hindi as a national language of India.

There may be comments and corrections called out that Hindi is not the National language and that there are 22 other languages recognised by Eighth Schedule of Constitution of India.  The purpose of the article is not to understand what is / are the national / officially recognised language(s) of India but to understand the forethought and efforts and actions taken by Veer Savarkar when no other leader had taken a lead on this subject.

Veer Savarkar had thought about Hindi as a major link language / national language as early as 1906.

Many other tall leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi had later expressed similar views but it was later than 1906.

While in England, he had begun to work towards making Hindi as a national language. In a country as diverse as India promoting one language as national language was and has never been easy and has been cause of discussions / debates / tensions etc.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and his brother Ganesh Damodar Savarkar had founded the Abhinav Bharat Society in 1904. The members of Abhinav Bharat repeated pledge every night before they retired to sleep. Few important points of the pledge were:

  • Make India independent
  • Weld India into one nation
  • Make India a republic
  • Make Hindi the national language of India and Devanagari the script in which it should be written

While in the Andamans as part of Life Imprisonment, he always promoted Hindi. This usually was not welcome for prisoners from Bengal and the Madras presidencies. They felt that their own languages i.e. Bengali and Tamil had a very rich history and literature and could be the candidates for the national language.

While Savarkar (himself a Maharashtrian and a non-native Hindi speaker) said that one can love his mother tongue but the country needed a cultural integration which could be accomplished via Hindi. Given that the number of Hindi speaking people far exceeded the speakers of other languages, it was logically the best thread that could hold the garland of culture in India.

Savarkar agreed that next to Hindi if any other language could deserve the honor of having national language, it was Bengali. He was a nationalist to the core and way above the parochial views of language and region.

He spoke to the prisoners from Punjab and helped them understand that the best writings of Guru Govind were written in pure Hindi like his drama “Vichitra” (Bachittar Natak).

Suraj Prakash, also called Gur Partap Suraj Granth, is a popular and monumental text about Sikh Gurus written by Kavi Santokh Singh. It is written in Braj Bhasha language in Gurmukhi script, with significant use of Sanskrit words. As Braj Bhasha is a form of Hindi, Savarkar convinced Sikhs that Hindi was the language of their religion and Gurumukhi was just a script. So they realized the value of Hindi as a national language and the language of their Panth.

In the Andamans, as part of training the prisoners he had set a rule that every prisoner should first learn his other tongue, followed by Hindi and then any other language of any province (other than his own).

Savarkar had to meet the objections of fellow prisoners and had to provide facts that Hindi was a rich language with Grammar, literature and vocabulary

Hindi at that time in Andamans was written in Persian script.  Even the government records were maintained in Urdu but owing the efforts of Veer Savarkar, they started to be maintained in Hindi (in Devanagari script). Through his unshakable faith and powered by his efforts, he started a girls’ school in the Andamans, where Hindi was made a compulsory subject.

He favored learning any language including Urdu but was against imposition of it on Hindu children in Andamans. He himself was well versed with Urdu has written Ghazals as well during his prison sentence at Andamans.

Veer Savarkar was a pioneering figure that promoted the cause of Hindi and our generation should know this. When the very idea of making Hindi as national language was preposterous and the leaders ridiculed and sidelined it, Savarkar took steps to make it happen.

In his book, My Transportation for life, Savarkar himself says that only the Nagar Pracharini Sabha of Banaras and Arya Samaj were the first agitators for promoting Hindi as national language.

He himself says that the first credit of propaganda in favor of Hindi as national language goes to Swami Dayanand Saraswati founder of Arya Samaj.

Savarkar always supported Sanskrit Nishta Hindi (Sanskritised Hindi) over the mixture version Hindustani. Some examples of the words either coined or revived are mentioned below for reference. The actual list is much bigger!

  1. दूरमुद्रक – Doormudrak – Teleprinter
  2. दूरध्वनी – Doordhwani – Telephone
  3. ध्वनिक्रमांक – DhwaniKramaank – Telephone Number
  4. छायाचित्रण – Chhayachitran – Photography
  5. चित्रपटगृह – ChitrapatGruha – Movie Theatre
  6. नगरपालिका – NagarPalika – Municipality
  7. महानगरपालिका – Mahanagar Palika – Municipal Corporation
  8. लोकसभा – Loksabha
  9. संपादक – Sampadak – Editor
  10. प्रवाचक – PraVachak – Reader

NATO collapse coming closer

0

 NATO- ON VERGE OF BREAKDOWN

NATO, North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a collective security alliance between 28 European states and 02 North American states. It was established in 1949. Article 5 of the treaty states, “The parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against all”.

The recent Russian invasion of Ukraine and lack of united response from NATO members especially from Germany has opened a new round of speculation about fault lines inside the organization and its possible dissolution.

WHAT ARE THE REASONS FOR THE POSSIBLE COLLAPSE OF NATO?

1. US withdrawal from Afghanistan: US sudden withdrawal from Afghanistan and Taliban seizure of power within hours of withdrawal does not go well between US and NATO members. The collective security clause was invoked for the first time in Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks. Bloods shed, Money spent by NATO allies went in vain due to the ‘disgraceful departure’ of the US from Afghanistan. It not only created mistrust but also doubt US security commitment in Western Europe as the Taliban through Central Asia can get hold of the European region.
further, it is a diplomatic loss for European members as well, as the power void created by the USA in Afghanistan was filled by NATO adversaries Russia & china through ‘closed door’ talks with the Taliban. It is considered to be a ‘shameful loss’ of the security organization as they were neither able to eliminate terrorism nor became successful in the establishment of Democracy.

2. Loss of Solidarity: During the Trump administration, the rise of protectionism and America’s first policy and continued Donald trump’s threat of pulling out of the organization created deep fault lines. He continuously reminded NATO allies that the US has been loaded with the “Burden of Defence” and it may go its way if defense expenditure by member countries did not increase to 2% of their GDP. It was mainly resisted by Germany as the ghost of Hitler still haunts the nation.
On the other hand, Internal conflicts like France & Turkey’s confrontation over the turkey invasion in northern Syria, turkey’s conflict with Greece over Cyprus & Britain’s exit from the EU & aim of creating ‘anglosphere’ have created a deep strain in the organization which eventually reflects in differences of opinions & loss of solidarity.

3. France-Russia Relations: Relations between the two historical arch-rivals have been on the positive side for the past few years. Trade between them is increased by 26% in 2017 skyrocketing to € 13.2 billion. France is the second highest investor in Russian stock and a leading provider of Foreign Direct Investment to Russia. France time and time again reiterated that “lack of rapprochement from the western side has pushed Russia towards China which will become a dire threat in future”. Macron’s participation in the Minsk agreement and playing the role of intermediary between Ukraine and Russia is an attempt to change historical dynamics of relations and to do away with china’s threat.

On a larger level, France aims to resurrect itself as individual power rather than being part of collective security. Its increased defense expenditure to 3% of GDP is proof of that. Macron in 2019 called Nato ‘Brain dead’ and appealed for the creation of a ‘European army’ to not depend on external hegemonic powers treating Europe as the center of rivalry. It also aims to gain leadership of western Europe through its closeness with Russia and shuttle diplomacy.

4. Pacifist Germany: Germany, a country known for its ruthless military has turned into a Pacifist spectator. Bundeswehr, {German military} condition is catastrophic due to meager expenditure, just 1.2% of GDP. Readiness of the military rate below 50%. Two plus four agreement turns this injury into an assault which barred Germany from the acquisition of nuclear weapons & limited armed forces personnel to 3,74,000 of whom no more than 3,45,000 are allowed to be in navy or airforce. It lacks cutting-edge technology, and it might be difficult for the nation to even defend itself on its own.
Germany-Russia relations is designated as ‘Best of Freinds & Wrosts of enemies”. Relations between them have got better in the past few years and currently, Germany is the leading foreign investor in Russian stock. Angela Merkel {former chancellor of germany} regular meeting with Russian counterpart, involvement in the Minsk agreement are evidence of growing relations between nations. Its dependence on Russia for gas supplies and Nord stream 2{$11billion gas pipeline project} were the main reason behind its softer approach towards Putin amid the Ukraine crisis.

5. Turkey-Russia closeness: As turkey aims to balance its relations in the diversified world order, it shuffles towards Russia to meet its geopolitical interests. Both backed each other in their respective disputes with the United States. Russia condemned US sanctions against turkey & turkey stated its opposition to US sanctions on Russia over its annexation of Crimea. It also abstained from voting on Russia’s suspension from the ‘Council of Europe’. On other hand, Russia suspended its news agency ‘Sputnik’ in the Kurdish language amid a turkey confrontation with Kurds in Syria.
Turkey recently purchased an S-400 missile system, Sukhoi S-35 and 5th generation Stealth fighter SU-35 from Russia. The purchase of the S-400 attracted CAATSA sanctions from the USA. Erdogan {Turkish president} continued suppression of dissent and resistance towards ‘Power abandonment’ goes against the democratic ethos embraced by the USA.

6. ‘Strategic De-coupling’ between USA & Western Europe: NATO, since its inception has worked on the principle of ‘common understanding of the threat and common action against it’, but the rise of china and recent Russian invasion of Ukraine have completely changed these dynamics. USA annual strategic vision has underlined ‘china’ as a major threat which can be seen in its actions, formation of Quad, coinage of term Indo-pacific and arming Australia with nuclear submarines. On other hand, slow decoupling with western Europe can be seen in the USA breaking of deal with France over submarines, CAATSA sanctions on Turkey and withdrawal from Afghanistan which is a major security compromise concerning western Europe.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has reignited the Russian threat for the west, Germany skyrocketing its spending on defense to €100bn and EU sending of arms and ammunitions can be seen as a realization of a threat. It is important to see that at this ‘critical geopolitical juncture’ which major power US sees as a major potential threat, china or Russia. The selection of Russia will give a free hand to china, which is eager to trigger down USA hegemony. De-coupling with western Europe, where countries have realized the Russian threat and are eager to work at the individual level and focusing on china seems to be a viable option. Angela Merkel predicted this in 2017 when she said ‘Self-reliance for security & reduce of dependence on US military must be the goal of West European region’.

The sudden collapse of NATO without proper militarization of western Europe will be a ‘gift in a decade’ for Russia as it aims to revive its prowess in Europe. It will further ignite the possibility of WWIII and make internal conflict for leadership more frequent in western Europe.

Naïve politician costing the country dearly

0

Ukraine started off in 1992 with a foreign debt of $0 thanks to Russia’s commitment to take on the Soviet Union’s $100 billion in liabilities. Large scale corruption and years of misrule by successive Ukrainian governments resulted in Ukraine piling up tens of billions-worth of dollars in obligations to foreign creditors, including the International Monetary Fund, the United States and the European Union. Kiev currently owes the IMF over $5 billion, with another $2.3 billion owed to the International Bank of Reconstruction of Development, and billions more to the United States, the European Union, Canada, Germany and Japan. No wonder that Kiev , caught in debt trap of the West, has moved towards the NATO in last three decades.

On the contrary, Russia started in 1992 with long queues of workers for free loaf of bread. For over three decades, Putin has rebuilt Russia. He balanced country’s resources between economic growth and military armament. Under him, Russian GDP has grown by over 6%. He has been meticulous in creating economic alignments with new merging economies of Brazil, India, South Africa and China which has a combined population of 3.23 billion people, or over 40 percent of the world population.

When Crimea happened in 2015, Russia was testing the waters. With Ukraine, Putin has announced that an alternate world order has arrived. Since 2011, the US sensing Russian emergence under Putin has imposed more than 100 sanctions on Russia, none proved effective to stop Putin’s Russia.

Over last couple of decades, Neo Nazism is gaining strength. West’s obsession with the colour of skin-based supremacy is pushing hate crimes against innocent Africans and Asians. Under the guise of democracy and human rights, Colour obsessed West has been destroying the culture and countries across different continents. In the current conflict, Western media falls flat on its face trying to explain why white Ukrainian refugees matter more than the ones created by NATO’s wars. The western propagandization behind blaming Russia as the aggressor while they ignore scores of victims of US imperialism exposes shallowness of free corporate media.

As we move into third decade of 21st century, Global Economy is changing in favour of developing countries while the US and its allies are striving to contain this rise by cutting the economic linkages. The society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) is a Belgium-based independent organisation that serves as an internal messaging system between over 11,000 banks and financial institutions in over 200 countries. Cutting Russia from Swift banking just like Iran is hailed in the West as the final nail in the coffin for Russian banks. However, Putin has again outwitted West.

In 2014, Russia had already initiated a switch to its alternative payment system called SPFS. According to the Central Bank of Russia’s website, at least 331 banks, both domestic and foreign, are listed as the SPFS system users. It will challenge SWIFT’s dominance in World’s financial market. The possibility of BRICS countries establishing an autonomous payments system in competition to SWIFT has been already in motion for some time. This move will boomerang on West and shall expedite creation of alternate banking system.

China-Russia ties are strengthening constantly during the last 10 years and more in every sector already. China first lifted the ban on wheat import from Russia and later incentivized the same. In return, Russia has entered into a long term oil and gas supplies deal with China. The package guarantees Russia’s long-term oil and gas supplies to the People’s Republic worth $117.5 billion. This will help meet China’s demands for energy to become World’s leader by 2040.

Militarily, Putin had to work the least. He inherited a strong military. USA’s brazenness in last three decades has helped him weave a counter hegemonic block that not only challenges the might of the NATO but shall be a multiple pain point for the group. Iran, China, North Korea and Russia present a formidable opposition to the American group of NATO nations. Russia now choose the military leverage of this partnership as NATO’s planned nuclear installation directly on the borders with Russia was crossing the red line for Putin to intervene.

As peace loving mild Indian, this poses great challenges for the World’s largest democracy. It shall do India good, if it contains to be non-aligned maintaining her balance with the West and the East. The challenge to India to take sides will emerge either when Putin goes deep into Europe or China plans to get deep into India. Such a situation is at least a decade away, alas we should be prepared for any such Chinese misadventure. India needs a strong leadership to continue to build her military might in this decade.

I feel sorry for Ukraine. West and EU have on the one hand, talking about peace and condemning the aggression of Russia and on the other hand are weaponizing the conflict even more, is, to say the least, bad judgement. In the new alignment, the bigger loser is the one whose shoulder West used for provoking Russia. The worst is, beside loud-mouth West media propaganda which added fuel to fire, they did nothing to prevent the war. Ukrainian president is the most naïve politician in these troubled times, and this has costed his country dear !!! For Zelensky , standing ovation by EU member countries matters more than lives of his fellow countrymen …

Forget Ukraine, let’s concentrate to save Taiwan

Finally, Vladimir Putin’s giant Russia waged war on Ukraine, a former Soviet Union (SU) republic with one tenth of Russian defence budget, ending months’ long failed diplomatic efforts to settle the conflict between the two without war, and speculation based on the US’s intelligence that Russian invasion was matter of days. “Historians will debate whether the Russian war on Ukraine could have been averted had Biden addressed Moscow’s legitimate security concerns about Ukraine becoming a US-NATO frontline bastion against Russia,” opines the strategic expert Prof. Brahma Chellaney.

The East European nation was made sovereign post-Communist ruled SU balkanization in 1991 followed by abolition of Warsaw Pact, but mostly was under the rule of pro-Moscow leadership till 2010s. On the very first day of the war, it has been cleared that the aggressor is going to win the war as other nations, so far had been with Ukraine giving supporting statements, not forthwith for physical intervention on behalf of victim, forgets about the consequence the aggressor will encounter in near and distance future due to Western and developed nations’ choreographed economic sanctions as per their threatens before the war.

The US and European Union (EU) have been very generous in implementing sanctions forthwith on the very day of war commencement. This is maximum they can do despite looming energy crisis the EU countries in particular will face if Russia imposes ban on gas supply as retaliatory measure for economic sanctions. EU countries source 40% of their natural gas requirements from Russia.

Putin’s Russia is going to implement its long desired sanitization of Ukraine’s own and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)’s military supports apart from anti-Russia political elements in victim’s territory, and might balkanize victim’s geography in such a manner and type that it will never rise to disobey big-brother Russia, and will never wish to entertain NATO’s interest for long for whatsoever reasons as has been seen in Georgia since 2008 post-Russia-Georgia war.

The US and its allies poor understanding of ground reality is now very clearly visible, and they are found not that pragmatic. Before the just launched war, they literally forced Russia to join the China camp, might be they have underestimated Russian present leadership’s confidence on the country’s military prowess, and its leadership’s determination to retain Soviet era sphere-of-influence. And, on the other hand, it looks like the US’s Biden Administration has not yet fully comprehended EU’s energy hunger, and economic and supply chain dependence on People’s Republic of China (PRC), the world’s manufacturing hub, and at present an ally of aggressor Putin’s Russia.

But, what next as a consequence of on-going Ukraine-Russia war is the most critical and furious for planet’s geopolitics, and its peace and stability. It is none other than the aggression of PRC in her already designated sphere-of-influence around her all directions of borders. And she has by now in virtual occupation of South China Sea, and denies the sea’s littoral countries to utilize the sea’s resources, they have been enjoying for centuries, disobeying established international order in the form of United Nation Convention for the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS). PRC or China has already got less genuine and largely self-manufactured border disputes -mainly based on unrecognized and unsubstantial historical facts- with her all neighbors.

And already announced that the island nation Republic of China (ROC), little more than hundred kilometers away from her east coast, is a renegade territory of China, and vowed to merge the same by force if so required. Apart from the above, soon after Xi Jinping coroneted as General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission in 2012, PRC Foreign Affairs minister Wang Yi told his counterparts in ASEAN countries, which are too littoral countries of SCS, that they are small countries compare to PRC. Should this statement not be interpreted that PRC wants to tell ASEAN overtly that they are part of Chinese sphere-of-influence? In the recent past, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman have gone to the extent of threatening Australia and Japan with N-Warheads missiles attacks as they questioned the Middle Kingdom’s secrecy over Covid19 origin and trade policies violating international norms.

And the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) already there on India’s northern border with full war-gears after hosting a bloody skirmish with Indian Army while attempting to grab Indian Territory in 2020 throwing year long agreements into Pangong Tso Lake signed between two countries to maintain peace on the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Before Putin finally waged war against Ukraine, he has an one-to-one summit meeting with Chinese paramount leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on the occasion of Winter Olympic inauguration ceremony. Long ago, Putin has expressed his unhappiness over disintegration of Soviet Union in early 1990s. And he certainly wants Russia should get back the former Soviet Union Republics -now sovereigns- under her sphere-of-influence, if not the kind of strategic alliances the NATO member countries have with the US. Day after the launch of on-going Ukraine attack, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Maria Zakharova warned of “serious military and political repercussion” if Finland, located on western border of Russian Federation, joins NATO.

What has transacted between Putin and Xi Jinping, the two supreme leaders of two strong military powers of the world with highly dictatorial tendencies is not known to the outside world. If you-attack-Ukraine-I-will-attack-Taiwan has been in principle decided among them ignoring for time-being old border dispute between two large neighbors, then an attack on Taiwan in near future may not be ruled out.

Let us think in the event of latest possibility -as feared above by this author- getting grounded, what will be the shape of world geopolitics, and consequences to world peace and stability?

It is certain that without external forces physical intervention, Taiwan cannot survive giant China invasion, which has a military budget twenty times bigger than her. And so far no power including super power America has got precise defence infrastructure in the island nation to rescue it from an instant attack like the US has in neighboring South Korea, Japan, etc. in addition of strategic treaties with latter two. So far what have been demonstrated are passages of naval battle gears in the Taiwan street to establish Freedom of Navigation and statement from the US General that their defence forces can come to rescue of tiny island nation in the event of attack from China within short period of time if the administration so desire.

Nothing concrete there. The 1978 US’s Taiwan Relation Act does not specify what kind response Washington will wield in the event of Chinese aggression to occupy her narrated renegade territory that is Taiwan. Once Taiwan is occupied, the US image of protector of democratic world will be thrown to Pacific Ocean for ever as Communist China’s present leadership which is determined to build modern military power to fight and win the war anywhere in the world by the PRC formation’s centenary in 2049. And China is progressively building its military prowess to achieve this ability.

Now, China President Xi Jinping, who has self-coroneted him with Paramount Leader status –so far only Mao Zedong, the founder of PRC, had this status-, got his candidate specific constitutional amendment to remain in power for life. Similarly, Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin following Chinese leader got his candidate specific constitutional amendment.

In view of the concerns discussed above, all concerns are earnestly advised to forget Ukraine, and now concentrate to save democratic Taiwan from lurking danger from monstrous dragon in Indo-Pacific region.

In just concluded Panchayat Raj election in the entire state of Odisha, out of 852 Zilla Parishad Zones for which election held on party symbols, the regional party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) wiped out oppositions, which are in fact leading national parties such as BJP and Congress, winning 766 zones -near about 90 per cent zones- and is about to form Zilla Parishad in all 30 districts, a historic feat for any political parties in state electoral politics. In this said election, BJP, Congress and Independents won in 42, 37 and 7 zones respectively. And in votes share, while BJD received 52.73% votes, BJP and Congress vote shares are 30.07% and 13.57% respectively.

In compare to 2017 Panchayat election, while for BJD the result is an exceptional across-the-board, for two national parties, there is nothing less than severe humiliations including in constituencies where BJP’s eight MPs and Congress one MP won in GE2019.

This author considers BJP Odisha’s GE2019 result extremely well because this was for the first time BJP MPs strength from the state gone up to eight without any alliance. In GE1999, post-Biju era, BJP won nine MPs from the state in alliance with newly formed regional party BJD, named after legendary Biju Patnaik and lead by his son Naveen Patnaik, a political novice. Before GE1999 election, BJP had never won any MP seat in the state including its earlier avatar Bharatiya Jan Sangh. And after the end of alliance with BJD and BJP in 2009, BJP under the guidance of over-confidence journalist-cum-politician from outside the state, who was squarely responsible for alliance break down, was reduced to pre-GE1999 status both in Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections, and in GE2014, the party won only one LS seat.

Here, in this discussion, this author picked up BJP for an analysis simple because BJP is the party which has the future in the state compare to other major opposition party called Indian National Congress (INC), which has in the meanwhile reduced to the status of spent-force, and hardly considered to be revived under the present dynasty ownership in the centre.

And the BJP, this is the party, which own eight MPs seats in GE2019, but however the party miserable failed to get matching number of MLAs that is 8X7=56, per one MP constituency there are seven MLAs. Instead it won only 23 MLAs in the elections simultaneously held for Parliament and State Assembly, a practice has been going on in the state of Odisha among few other states since GE2004 as the BJD-BJP government under the leadership of CM Naveen Patnaik wished so in 2004 though the government had one more years to remain in power as per the five years term provisioned in constitution. Here, let us not take into account the then BJP state leadership’s mocking of BJD CM on preponing of election by one year that ‘Naveen Patnaik wants to swim the electoral battle riding centre’s BJP government’s popularity’.

Here, it is to be noted that then the party did not acknowledge the greater national benefit of simultaneous elections for both Lok Sabha and Assembly, though now party’s supreme leader PM Narendra Modi wishes for the same to avoid going to poll every now and then which has very negative impact on government policy matter.

Let us have a glance on 2017 Panchayat Raj election held in the state. In that election, while BJD won 476 Zilla Parishad zones, BJP won 297 zones. As per the data released by State Election Commission, BJD’s vote share is 52.73 per cent in the ZP elections, way ahead of the 30.07 per cent and 13.57 per cent of the BJP and Congress respectively in just concluded rural poll. The BJD made a jump of about nine per cent votes this time compared to the 2017 elections, while both BJP and Congress lost three percent votes each.

As per Indian standard usual political practice, the blame games post-election have already started much before the most needed stocktaking by BJP state leadership. And the newspapers are packed with statements. “The poll results is least surprise because the party had not done its homework,” opined veteran BJP leader Bijoy Mohapatra, who migrated to BJP after a failed attempt to get his own electorally viable regional party having been ditched by BJD supremo in early 2000s. Going further, he said, “Some in the BJP took it for granted that the popularity of the saffron party is fast growing and they are going to form the next government in the state.” He admitted that dissension is more and no one is ready to listen to others in the BJP.

Addressing media in the party state headquarter, party’s IAS-turn-Bhubaneswar MP and national spokesperson Aparajita Sarangi said, “The party’s dismal performance in the rural polls cannot be attributed to outside reasons.” But what are the talked about ‘outside reasons’ she means have not been clarified. Going further she said, “We need to look within ourselves and do what is required to improve the party’s performance.”

But most astonishingly none, who matters, has been found analyzing and discussing why BJP did not get matching number of MLAs, which is 56, with eight MPs won in GE2019. Even in some BJP won MP constituencies not a single BJP MLA won in that General Election.

Why? What is the reason?

In fact, it looks like the problem lies on the part of state party leadership which has not been able to understand state voters thinking.

Shall it be assumed that the voters are happy with political arrangement that BJP as ruling party and Narendra Modi as PM in New Delhi and BJD as ruling party and Naveen Patnaik as CM in Bhubaneswar? This author believes this assumption. To support this assumption, the classic example is GE2019 result as illustrated above. Going further, Naveen’s support to BJP Rajya Sabha candidate Ashwini Vaishnaw as per the telephonic request of Prime Minister and Home Minister as reported in media, and BJD cooperation to BJP-led central government on several crucial issues concerning national and state politics unlike other opposition parties –both regional and national- have been appreciated by states voters well.

Other major assumption for BJP’s poor show in GE2019 Assembly election and recently held Panchayat Poll is: it may be that the state voters have not find a best substitute to BJD’s Naveen Patnaik in BJP state leadership. Introspection and cadre building instead of abusive politics on unsustainable issues are need of the hours. Here, the state leadership of party should not forget that a gentleman politician Naveen Patnaik in opposition side has been used by the BJP central leadership as shield against divisive politics of almost all opposition parties. When almost all opposition both national and regional parties joined hands against BJP, Naveen Patnaik is found issue-based cooperative central government.

While concluding, this author wishes to mention the latest statements of PM Modi over BJD and CM Naveen Patnaik politics, and latter’s statement on PM. Replying to motion of thanks on President address to Parliament in the upper house on 8 February 2022, Modi spoke on cooperative federalism and gave examples of reforms in coal and mining sectors. “These reforms are important decisions of cooperative federalism. Odisha has been at the forefront of implementing these reforms. I congratulate the Odisha chief minister…his government worked for all the reforms working shoulder to shoulder with us.” Modi’s praise of Naveen came on a day the BJP staged demonstration near the Chief Minister’s residence against alleged denial of justice to Kalahandi teacher Mamita Meher, who was allegedly murdered in October last year, a purely crime done by a criminal under investigation under the watch of High Court. Apart from above, PM Modi had appreciated Naveen for his government’s preparedness and disaster management activities which has resulted in minimal loss of lives after cyclone Yaas that hit the state in May last year. Reciprocating BJP government’s gesture, Naveen has been supportive of Modi government’s most of the contentious policy decisions from Citizenship Amendment Act to abrogation of special status to Jammu and Kashmir, among others. Recently, Naveen had reacted sharply to PM’s security breach in Punjab and saying the PM is an institution, whose foolproof security is duty of every government and anything contrary should be unacceptable while many opposition parties were celebrating the security breach.

During this Ukraine war, India proves once again that it’s the real friend of Bangladesh

0

We know the contributions of India to Bangladesh during the 1971 liberation period. It is true that without the assistance of India, it was quite impossible for Bangladesh to gain independence from occupied west Pakistan.  India stood by Bangladesh all-time in her crisis moment. Even despite having internal problems in India during the Covid-19 period, it helped Bangladesh by proving medical equipment.
The Government of India and the people of India hastened the victory of Bangladesh by forming Allied forces with all possible help and cooperation in the movement against the Pakistani rulers, against the extreme discriminatory behavior of the army. Even the veto of the then Soviet Union in proposing a ceasefire on behalf of Pakistan at the UN was behind the Indian government’s ultra-tactical alliance agreement with the Soviets.

In 1972-73, India provided emergency assistance not only for food or consumer goods but also for the repair and reconstruction of transport communication systems and for the supply of industrial raw materials by supplying crude oil for refineries. India supplies civilian aircraft and ships. Food was the most important thing for the new country. At the beginning of 1972, the country suffered from the devastation of the war on the one hand and the loss of crops twice in a row on the other. India also assists in the transportation of only 0.4 million tons of food grains. In the first six months, India provided 74 percent of the total food aid. Between December 1971 and June 1972, 200 million was donated and 42 million was raised for the import of goods and projects. It was the second-largest donor to the United States after 577 million.

The day after the nationwide lockdown was announced in 2020, India was the first country to contact its trusted neighbor Bangladesh to deal with the coronavirus. The first batch of humanitarian aid has been sent to neighboring countries including Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Maldives, Seychelles, and Mauritius. India has always been the first to respond to any crisis in the region and has always extended a helping hand.

India gave 1.2 million free doses of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine to Bangladesh in March last year. as Dhaka urged New Delhi to maintain a regular supply of shots to battle the pandemic. Operation Ganga is being conducted to rescue Indian nationals stranded in war-torn Ukraine. So far, thousands of Indian nationals have been repatriated under the scheme. Significantly, the Indian government has rescued citizens of several other countries besides Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal through this operation.

It is India that stood by Bangladesh always. Even during the Ukraine crisis, India helped Bangladesh to evacuate Bangladeshi people. India’s helping hand to Bangladesh is time-tested. A friend in need is a friend indeed. According to the media reports, 9 Bangladeshi nationals have been rescued from Ukraine recently under Operation Ganga. Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has already thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for rescuing the citizens of Bangladesh.

Media reports say, about 18,000 Indian nationals have been flown to India from Ukraine on special flights. On March 07, 410 Indian nationals were repatriated from Ukraine’s neighboring countries on two special flights.

Earlier, the Indian government had rescued Pakistani student Asma Shafiq, who was stranded in Ukraine during Operation Ganga. The student also thanked the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Indian Embassy has assisted them even in difficult situations.

In less than two weeks after the Russian invasion, some two million people fled Ukraine. Half of them are children. The flight from Ukraine is thought to have created the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. The situation is particularly dire in cities besieged by Russian forces. According to news sources, a convoy of 12 buses left Sumi, Ukraine for Poltava. Where the staff of the Indian Embassy was accompanied by the staff of the Red Cross. But there were not only Indians but also citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh. A total of nine Bangladeshis were among the rescued citizens. Several stranded Nepali and Tunisian students were also rescued. At the moment no other Indian students are stuck in Sumi, which is to say the success of the Government of India’s Operation Ganga.

The positive steps taken by the Government of India in the rescue operation are going to play a very important role in the Indian subcontinent. India has always had good relations with Bangladesh. India helps Bangladesh in many ways. The bond of harmony between the two countries is also quite strong.

India is very successful in Operation Ganga. Indian planes rescue Indian students from war-torn Ukraine However, not only for the students of their own country but also the students of neighboring Bangladesh were rescued from Ukraine by Indian aircraft through Operation Ganga. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina thanked the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi for this initiative of India. According to news agency sources, Bangladeshi students were also stuck in Ukraine like other countries. Similarly, 9 Bangladeshi students were rescued by Indian Airlines.

Besides, students from Nepal and Tunisia were also stranded in Ukraine. India also came forward to rescue them. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to work to strengthen relations with Bangladesh. He made the remarks while visiting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s security adviser Tariq Ahmed Siddiqui earlier. The meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office in New Delhi on March 06. During the meeting, Narendra Modi recalled his visit to Bangladesh last year and greeted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Tareq Ahmed Siddiqui thanked Narendra Modi for expressing interest in strengthening Bangladesh-India relations. He also thanked the Prime Minister of India for standing by Bangladesh in times of crisis including the Covid-19 epidemic.

Prime Minister Modi praised the leadership of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for ensuring overall development. Modi promised to work with Sheikh Hasina to further strengthen India-Bangladesh relations. However, during this Ukraine war, India proves once again that it’s the real friend of Bangladesh.

“Operation Ganga”– first nation to initiate evacuation of every Indian citizen

“If a ship is strong, the ocean’s tides do not bother it”

World wide around 1% of Indian population live in other countries mounting to 1.2 crore citizens. With improving economic conditions and competition people began to  move to different parts of the world in search of opportunities for survival. When there is untoward catastrophic events in these countries, it became responsibility of the country to ensure safety and protection. Presently world is noticing war between Ukraine -Russia where in micro issues are been magnified and ego clashes between the countries leading to war. There are nearly 80,000 international students who are stranded in Ukraine. Though government of India had first released its advisory on 15th Feb for citizens of India to leave the country in view of exponential increase in airfare, lack of online classes many of them couldn’t move to India.

Sudden belligerent behavior of Russia, declaration of martial law by Ukrainian government made the Indian citizens stuck in the war zones. Our PM Narendra Modi ji spoke to the presidents of both nations and requested them to maintain restraint and urged for the safety of Indian nationals. After the dialogue with Russian president Vladimir Putin, India was assured that no harm will be done to Indian nationals and was advised them to carry national flag. On a war foot, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modiji an emergency cabinet committee security meeting was held with the top officials to plan for evacuating stranded citizens of India and Operation ganga was initiated. The Indian embassy remained active and was sending regular advisories. Also to assist and coordinate in evacuation of citizens  4 cabinet ministers were send to 4 neighbouring nations- Hungary, Romania, Maldova, Poland and Slovakia .

When most of the developed countries restrained from helping their citizens stuck in Ukraine, India on a war foor mobilized all the possible routes through diplomatic ties in bringing back every citizen to India. With Ukraine air space closed we need to transport the people from the neighbouring countries. With martial law in implementation, transportation faced difficulties in mobilizing the people to the borders. Indian flag not only helped Indians but also Pakistan and Turkish students who displayed the Indian flag, raised slogans “Bharat Mata ki Jai” to move through the war zone. Khairav city which has nearly 4000 Indian students stuck in the war zone but PM Narendra Modiji discussion with Russian president helped for  cease fire for a period of 6 hours  on 2nd March and all the citizens were advised to move to the border.

This is  not the first time under the powerful leadership of Modiji Indian citizens were evacuated at times of holocaust . Successful operations conducted were described in Table below. The largest being mission Vande bharat where 60 lakh people were brought back during the pandemic. China did its first evacuation on 5th march and the citizens were asked to pay 18,000 yuan whereas Indian government had rescued around 15,900 students via 76 flights till 6th March without charging a penny. But still few leftist media and opposition parties are making outcry without understanding the ground reality and difficulties been faced in the process of evacuation. Russia had also deployed 130 buses for evacuating students stucked in Khariv and Sumy to the border.

Once external affairs minister Late  Shri Sushma Swaraj ji said “ even if you are stuck on the Mars, Indian Embassy there will help you” indicating the commitment the present government has towards its citizens . All these was possible because India is gaining strength and all world countries are looking towards India in this type of quagmires.
