Understanding the Valmiki Ramayana

0

It has become the norm for every Tom, Dick and Harry to quote from the Ramayana as though they are authorities on the subject to malign Hindus. Worse still, is the proliferation of so-called “rationalists” and “secularists”, who seem to think themselves sufficiently qualified on the subject to pass opinions on Lord Rama. The comments made during the Ram Setu debate in the UPA era by the Congress, DMK and others cannot be forgotten. The recent diatribe spewed by the acutely anti-Hindu and Aurangzeb obsessed Audrey Trushke and the recent movie Kaala are among the long list of such inaccurate and venomous attacks against this great Ithihasa of Valmiki. Anonymous Twitter handles such as @anamyid which are of dubious credentials with respect to their “neutrality” have also unabashedly distorted the Vedas and other Shastras.

On the flip side, it is also a matter of concern that many modern-day right-wing Hindus, who despite being sincere in their attempts to refute these malicious individuals, are hampered by a lack of knowledge of their predecessors’ works. Thus, we have some respected right-wing personalities writing in an article intending to defend the Ramayana that “Hindus are allowed to criticize their own gods”, thus inadvertently and tacitly accepting the charges levied by the opposition! This article thus aims to educate Hindus of the richness of the Valmiki Ramayana and thus provide them with an unambiguous explanation of all the events which are taken up by our opponents. What is presented in this article is based on the commentaries of Vedantins belonging to the traditions of Advaita, Vishishtadvaita and Dvaita whose priceless works and insights have enriched our culture?

Before we get to the main issues that the leftist and other anti-Hindu individuals rake up, we need to first understand who Lord Rama was. The key question to understand his behaviour is – was he human? Or was he God? And if he was divine, what was the nature of his birth and was his body made of flesh and blood?

The Valmiki Ramayana unequivocally establishes that Sri Rama is the Supreme Brahman, Lord Vishnu, and no mere human. Thus our opponents cannot profess to embark on a study of the Lord’s activities without first accepting that the source text claims him to be God and not a human. As an example, if you are analysing the Koran, you are doing so by first considering the claim that Mohammed is a prophet as mentioned in the text, and thus you judge his activities based on that primary assumption of the text – that he was divinely inspired.

Similarly, when you analyse the Ramayana, you are bound to first consider the claim that Rama was not a human, but the Supreme Being himself. Because that is what the text says – and then you analyse and judge his activities based on that assumption.

So, what are the proofs in the Ramayana that Lord Rama was Parabrahman? Here they are:

sarvalokeśvarasyaivaṃ kṛtvā vipriyamuttamam । rāmasya rājasiṃhasya durlabhaṃ tava jīvitam ॥ (~ VR 5.51.43)

Meaning: Rama is the supreme lord of all worlds, a lion among kings. Having pained him, it is very difficult for you to sustain your life after offending him to this extent.

“sarvalokeśvarasya” means not just the Lord of Ayodhya, but the Ruler of all the Worlds.

idānīṃ ca vijānāmi yathā saumya sureśvaraiḥ ।vadhārthaṃ rāvaṇasyeha vihitaṃ puruṣottamam ॥ (VR 6.119.18)

Meaning: O gentle one! I recognize You now to be the Supreme Person, duly enjoined here by the rulers of gods, for the destruction of Ravana.

artaa sarvasya lokasya shreShTho j~naanavataaM prabhuh |

upekShase kathaM siitaaM patantiiM havyavaahane || kathaM devagaNashreShThamaatmaanaM naavabuddhyase | (VR 6.117.6)

Meaning: Oh! Lord, You are the creator, destroyer, and supporter of all the worlds, You are all knowing, and the doer of all actions. How can You ignore Sita who is falling to fire, as an ordinary woman? How do you not recognize yourself to be the foremost of the troop of gods?

Lord Hanuman tells Ravana that Rama is a Being more powerful than the gods Brahma, Rudra and Indra, which is obviously not the trait of a human.

brahmā svayambhūś caturānano vā rudrastrinetrastripurāntako vā |

indro mahendraḥ suranāyako vā trātuṃ na śaktā yudhi rāmavadhyam ||” (~VR 5.51.45)

Meaning: Neither Brahma the self-existing god with four faces or Rudra with three eyes and the destroyer of Tripura or Mahendra the god of atmosphere and sky as also the lord of celestials can protect the one to be killed by Rama in battle.

The words of Vishvamitra in the Ramayana here:

aham vedmi mahaatmaanam raamam satya paraakramam || vashiShTho.api mahaatejaa ye ca ime tapasi sthitaaH | (~ VR 1.19.14)

Meaning: Oh Dasaratha ! I fully comprehend Rama as the greatest of Souls and as the most valorous and righteous One. Sage VasishtA of great lustre due to his superior penance and others like him in Your court also understand these qualifications of Your young son, Rama.

The words “aham vedmi mahaatmaanam raamam” is nothing but the explanation of the Purusha Sukta mantra “vedAhametam puruSham mahantam” (I know that Great Purusha) – it denotes the Supreme Being. “Knowing” means “Meditating”.

The words of Mandodari to Rama:

vyaktameSha mahaayogii paramaatmaa sanaatanaH | anaadimadhyanidhano mahataH paramo mahaan || tamasaH paramo dhaataa shaN^khachakragadaadharaH |shriivatsavakShaa nityashriirajayyaH shaashvato dhruvaH || maanuShaM ruupamaasthaaya viShNuH satyaparaakramaH |sarvaiH parivR^ito devairvaanaratvamupaagataiH || sarvalokeshvaraH shriimaan lokaanaaM hitakaamyayaa |saraakShasa pariivaaram hatavaaMstvaaM mahaadyutiH || (~VR 6.111.14-17)

Meaning: This Rama is certainly a great uniter of contradictory attributes (mahAyogI) , an eternal person, having no beginning middle or end, greater than the Jivatma or Individual Self, the one beyond the darkness of prakrti, the nourisher, wielding a conch, a disc and a mace, wearing the ‘Srivatsa’ mark on his chest, of lasting beauty, incapable of being conquered, a perpetual one, being the constant soul of the universe, truly mighty, the lord of all the worlds, the prosperous one having a great splendour and Vishnu, the lord of maintenance of the world with a wish to benefit the worlds, assuming a human form surrounded by all the gods in the form of monkeys, Rama killed you (Ravana), surrounded by demons.

In another context, Rama tells Brahma:

aatmaanaM maanuShaM manye raamaM dasharathaatmajam || so’haṃ yasya yataścāhaṃ bhagavaṃstadbravītu me | (~VR 6.117.11)

Meaning: I consider myself as Rama, the son of Dasaratha. O Respected Brahma, You, tell me that which I as such really am.

The key word is “Atmanam manye”. “I consider myself” as such and such. Shri Rama does consider himself as the son of Dasaratha *in this avatAra*, in so much as kR^iShNa considered himself a cowherd. But he is not in actuality the mere son of Dasaratha. If he had really been only the son of Dasaratha, he would have said “aham rAmo dasharathAtmajaH”.

Brahma replies,

bhavānnārāyaṇo devaḥ śrīmāṃścakrāyudhaḥ prabhuḥ || ekaśṛṅgo varāhastvaṃ bhūtabhavyasapatnajit | akṣaraṃ Brahma satyaṃ ca madhye cānte ca rāghava ॥lokānāṃ tvaṃ paro dharmo viṣvaksenaścaturbhujaḥ । (~VR 6.117.13-14)

Meaning: You are the Lord Narayana himself the glorious god, who wields the discus. You are the Divine Boar with a single tusk, the conqueror of your past and future enemies. You are Brahman, the imperishable, the Truth abiding in the middle as well as at the end of the universe. You are the supreme righteousness of people, whose powers go everywhere. You are the four-armed.

jagatsarvaM shariiraM te…. || 6-117-26

Meaning: The entire cosmos is your body.

We could go on and on, there are so many verses. Let us end this section with the following words of Brahma.

tvaM yajJNstvaM vaShaTkaarastvamoMkaaraH paraatparaH || prabhavaM nidhanaM vaa te no viduH ko bhavaaniti dR^ishyase sarvabhuuteShu goShu cha braahmaNeShu cha || dikShu sarvaasu gagane parvateShu nadiiShu cha |sahasracharaNaH shriimaan shatashiirShaH sahasradR^ik || tvaM dhaarayasi bhuutaani pR^ithiviiM cha saparvataam | (6.117.20-22)

Meaning: You (Rama) are the sacrificial performance. You are the sacred syllable ‘Vashat’ (on hearing which the Adhvaryu priest casts the oblation to a deity into the sacrificial fire). You are the mystic syllable ‘OM’. You are higher than the highest. People neither know your end nor your origin nor who you are in reality. You appear in all created beings in the cattle and in Brahmanas. You exist in all quarters, in the sky, in mountains and in rivers. With thousand feet, with hundred heads and with thousand eyes along with Lakshmi, you bear the earth with all its created beings along with its mountains.

This body of text refutes the opinion of anyone who dares to say “Rama was a human and was not God as per Valmiki”.

The Lord is mentioned to be “tAmasa paramO dhAta” – One who is beyond Prakriti. The meaning is that he is not dictated by the laws of karma, and all his activities are due to Sport, assumed by his own will. The brahma sutras clearly say “lokavattu leela kaivalyam” – everything is a sport of Brahman. And hence, his body is not made of flesh and blood, and neither is Sita’s, who is verily Mahalakshmi as per the following shloka:

sītā lakṣmīrbhavān viṣṇurdevaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ prajāpatiḥ || vadhārthaṃ rāvaṇasyeha praviṣṭo mānuṣīṃ tanum | (VR 6.117.28)

Meaning: Sita is none other than Goddess Lakshmi, while you are Lord Vishnu. You are having a shining dark-blue hue. You are the Lord of created beings. For the destruction of Ravana, you entered a human body here, on this earth.

“Entered a human body” means, “assuming a form similar to a human” in appearance. But this form is actually not made of flesh and blood but is non-material. That is proven by the fact that Rama is beyond karma, has no gender in the material plane (such as man, woman etc) and his form is all-attractive as evidenced by how the Rishis of Dandakaranya (who were all males and not female) enjoyed the beauty of his appearance:

rūpasaṃhananaṃ lakṣmīṃ saukumāryaṃ suveṣatām |dadṛśurvismitākārā rāmasya vanavāsinaḥ ||(VR 3-1-13)

Meaning: The Rishis of Dandakaranya saw Rama’s body, which despite no decoration, looked richly decorated, whose body parts were beautifully well-arranged, with self-luminous augustness, which was delicate like a blooming flower, which was suited to his nature.

The rishis thus fell in love with that form, which no man can cause them to. Padma Purana says these rishis were reborn as some of the gopis who indulged in Rasa-Leela with Krishna as they desired to experience his form.

Thus, we have established that Rama and Sita are not human, their bodies are not made of flesh and blood, and their activities are not governed by karma. That being the case, what miscreant can accuse them of this and that, when the entire episode of Agni-pariksha etc was just a sport? Even Sita, being Mahalakshmi herself, feels no sorrow, and her pregnancy later on is also part of her leela!

Despite this easy explanation, we will still analyse those incidents and show how misguided our opponents are. There are three major incidents in the Valmiki Ramayana that our opponents love to take up for criticism – Agni-Pariksha, Shambhuka’s death and Vali Vadha.

First, the issue of Agni-Pariksha.

This is actually very simple. Firstly, one must note that Rama never asked Sita to do Agni-Pariksha. Sita herself chooses to do so upon hearing Rama’s words.

In any case, before Rama tells Sita that he cannot accept her, this is what he says:

nirjitā jīvalokasya tapasā bhāvitātmanā |agastyena durādharṣā muninā dakṣiṇeva dik || (~VR 6.115.14)

Meaning: You have been won by me, whose mind is purified by knowledge as the southern quarter, which was difficult to be approached by the world of mortals, was conquered by the Sage Agastya.

Note two things here – firstly, “tapasA” means “knowledge” and not “ascetism” as per the Upanishad vAkya “yasya jnAnamayam tapas”. Rama first says that his mind is pure on account of his knowledge, which is nothing but his omniscience, as he is the Supreme Brahman. Thus, prior to chastising Sita, he is actually saying that he knows she is pure by his omniscience, but nonetheless will chastise her for show since some of his entourage have a doubt regarding her purity.

How can we say this? Because he says he won Sita like Agastya won the Southern Quarter. The story is that Agastya conquered this region and made it a pure place, unapproachable by the Asuras. Similarly, Sita is someone who is unapproachable by Asuras like Ravana, and thus by making this comparison, Rama has already shown that she is pure!

Rama, in this avatara, was executing dharma. Some of the warriors who had fought with him had impure thoughts regarding Sita, and so he decided to show Sita’s greatness to the world. That the fault lay with the accusers and not Sita is declared by him in the next shloka:

prāptacāritrasaṃdeha mama pratimukhe sthitā |dīpo netrāturasyeva pratikūlāsi me dṛḍham || (~VR 6.115.17)

Meaning: “You, with a suspicion arisen on your character, standing in front of me, are extremely disagreeable to me, even as a light to one, who is suffering from a poor eye-sight.”

On the face of it, this seems like Rama is insulting Sita. But analyse the shloka. Rama says Sita is like a great light, that he cannot see due to poor eye-sight. If one with poor eye-sight cannot see the Sun, then does the fault lie with the pure and bright Sun, or the poor eye-sight which limits vision? It is the latter. Thus, by this analogy, Rama tacitly lays blame on those who had doubts about Sita’s purity and actually praises Sita!

And this is finally revealed by Rama below:

pratyayārthaṃ tu lokānāṃ trayāṇām satyasaṃśrayaḥ |upekṣe cāpi vaidehīṃ praviśantīṃ hutāśanam || na ca śaktaḥ suduṣṭatmā manasāpi hi maithilīm |pradharṣayitumaprāpyāṃ dīptāmagniśikhāmiva || (~VR 6.118.17-18)

Meaning: In order to convince the three worlds, I (Rama), whose refuge is truth, ignored Seetha while she was entering the fire. The evil-minded Ravana was not able to lay his violent hands, even in thought, o the unobtainable Seetha, who was blazing like a flaming tongue of fire

Thus, Rama acted fully in accordance to Dharma and nowhere castigated Sita. It was some of the watchers who were at fault for harbouring such thoughts.

The entire episode also has an inner meaning. Rama is Brahman, Sita is the individual self and Ravana is the body with 10 senses. When the self-detaches from the body, it reaches Brahman, and it is proven to be inherently pure, and untainted by the impure body despite long association. Similarly, Sita is attained by Rama and is held to be pure, despite being held captive by the impure Ravana. To illustrate this Vedantic truth, Rama and Sita, the divine couple, performed this sport of Agni-Pariksha. Unfortunately, Aurangzeb obsessed “Sanskrit scholars” cannot understand this lofty truth.

Next, the issue of Shambhuka.

A portions of the Dalit fraternity aligned to Marxist, Christo-Islamist ideologies seem to take issue with Rama killing Shambuka merely due to the fact that the latter was a Shudra. Firstly, “Dalit” is not even a Hindu caste that exists in the scriptures. Shambhuka was not a “Dalit” – he was a shudra, the 4th varna. Secondly, it is mentioned in the shAstra that Shambhuka had been performing a penance which led to the death of the son of a Brahmin and that he was trying to conquer the world of the gods. Thus, his death was deserving.

The leftist elite seems to think just because someone was a Shudra, he automatically is a good person. Au contraire, there are good and bad shudras in the scriptures, just as there are good and bad Brahmins. Rama blessed the Brahmin rishis in Dandakaranya, but killed the evil Ravana who was also a Brahmin. Rama called the low caste Guha as his brother, more dear to him than Lakshmana, but killed an evil shudra named Shambhuka. Thus, Rama has again acted impartially in punishing the wicked and blessing the righteous regardless of caste.

It is very funny that those who bleat about the killing of Shambhuka fail to see Rama embracing Guha, or calling Jatayu, a vulture (and hence lower than a human, let alone the lowest caste), as his own father.

The issue of caste, manu smriti etc can be addressed, but that would make the article too long. Maybe another time.

Finally, the issue of Vali vadham. Our ignorant opponents claim that Rama hiding while killing Vali was against dharma.

A very simple explanation – this is bhagavad leela. This episode has the following thread – Sugriva was weaker than Vali. Vali, it is mentioned, was much stronger than Ravana. Sugriva was also weaker than Ravana.

If so, why did Rama befriend Sugriva, who is weaker than both Vali and Ravana, to defeat Ravana, and to gain Sugriva’s trust, killed Vali who was stronger than both Sugriva and Ravana? And to gain Sugriva’s trust, Rama uprooted seven trees with one arrow to prove he was stronger than Vali, who could only uproot one. Remember that Vali was also stronger than Ravana, and if Rama is stronger than Vali, then he really needs no help in defeating Ravana! This is the incredible sport of Lord Rama!

The simple reason is that Sugriva had retrieved the jewels of Sita and by that, had earned the grace of Lakshmi, by which Rama was compelled to shower his grace on Sugriva. Thus he befriended Sugriva and gave the latter the chance to help him (Rama).

Hence, the arguments of Marxists, anti-Hindu scholars and other such elements stands refuted by the light of Sanatana dharma. It is hoped that this article will clarify the doubts of sincere truth seekers who wish to combat such unsavoury elements.

SC’s verdict on AAP-LG row, An inevitable, silent but deadly storm is approaching Delhi

0

For a long time, the Delhi Government has been claiming that the Lieutenant Governor is not letting them work and creating problems. With the Supreme Court’s order, things seem to be pacified between the two. The Delhi Government also came up with an Outcome Report of the Office of Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor. The report roughly has 35 different files or proposals across 15 different departments. The First question that comes up in my mind is: ‘Is it all of the work proposed by the Delhi Government for which they have been shouting all this time?’ After going through the report, I could see that the government has tried to pin their failures on somebody, who in this case was the LG. For every proposal, they mentioned the delay from the LG’s side and the impact of the delay. However, their delay calculation is incorrect. For instance:

Higher education loan guarantee scheme: They declared a delay of 402 days because of LG. The file was first sent to the L-G on 30.08.2016. However, according to the very same report the file was returned to the government on 13.2.2017 and remained with the party till 06.09.2017 (200 days give or take). The party counted 402 days delay from the day they sent the proposal to the LG for the first time and did not exclude the delay of 200 days from their end. They were thinking of the LG as just a rubber stamp who would just sign and not look. The file was approved by the LG.

Similarly, Aam Aadmi Mohalla Clinics/AAMC(Schools): The proposals were said to be delayed by the LG for 101 and 146 days respectively. However, they did not exclude the delay of approx 60 days when the file was with the party.

Mid-day meals by Akshay Patra Foundation: The LG had asked them to check if there are other similar functioning entities in the state. I think this was a fair question; the government should not pay more if alternatives are available. Technically speaking the party had sent an incomplete file to the LG. They sent the file with incomplete information on 21.08.2017 and the L-G replied on 20.11.2017 and since then the party has not submitted the complete file. It is being delayed because of them and not because of the L-G

If a file is being sent to a signing authority, one should at least complete the different necessary formalities. If they don’t accept the powers of the signing authority then why sending the files to the office of LG in the first place? This does not make any sense. Does it? Let’s assume that the LG approved and signed all the proposals and something goes wrong in the near future. Who would be held accountable? The Delhi Government would not have taken a second in pinning it on him, they would have said upfront,” the L-G didn’t carry out his job properly, we sent the files to him”. It would have definitely made more sense then. Further, apparently, Mr Kejriwal has some boon from whatever god he believes in that whatever he touches become pure and corruption free. He can raise queries but others cannot, he can make comments on others work but vice-versa is not allowed, his proposals are the best and there is no scope of improvement in them.

Maybe he believes in a pseudo-secular-democratic facade with an authoritarian anarchist at the helm.

The report other than the misleading information also reveals Kejriwal’s approach towards retaining political power. It is absolutely fine to think about the next elections, every politician/government keeps next elections in mind.  They have to do things that would create their legacy or highlight their presence. But how they achieve this distinguishes the different leaders or say differentiates between a leader and a politician. Let’s take examples.

How are Aam Aadmi Mohalla Clinics different from Delhi Government Dispensaries and Primary Healthcare Centers? Scaling up the already existing structures and facilities would have been easier and would have cost less but would not have established an “Aam Aadmi” legacy. Would it? They allow the “AAP” to explicitly connect to the voters but the same would not have been possible with the already existing structures. Same with AAMC(Schools), could have used Government Doctors to do routine visits to the schools but again that would not have created the legacy. Building toilets and providing LPG connections to households are also a way to connect with the voters; even though they are vital for the society but would they make a legacy? Certainly not, after a few years “who” did those things would be forgotten. The party who does things like this would have to keep on working to win. The people who build the legacy can use the legacy to win again and again. That is why the love for statues, street names and so on. The brand “Nehru-Gandhi” is an epitome of legacy building and beneficiary propping. Please have a look at why congress should loose 2019 for its own good.

“Building Legacy helps the politicians who work once and want to reap the benefits forever”

Establishing a legacy is not an exclusive way to stay alive in the political arena.  Poor and lower castes have proven to be of critical importance in Indian Politics. Congress had always been allocating thousands and thousands of crores in for them by providing different services in the form of subsidies, etc. and there is absolutely no doubt about that. And yet they made sure that the poor remained poor and lower castes remain lower caste. How and Why?  Mr Rajiv Gandhi had quoted once ” only 15 paise out of a Rupee reach the needy”  Where did all the money go? They designed the system this way, it was not by accident. They added layers and layers of so-called essential middlemen officials. They fathomed exactly what they were doing and appreciated it.

Arvind Kejriwal is not inventing anything new, he is merely adding wheels to the already designed cart. Many of the proposals in the report re-constitute various committees; District Committees, Thana Committees, Town Vending Committees, other marketing committees or adding DANICs, etc. In the same report, there was a proposal to increase the pay for those DANICs. It is just a way to redistribute the allocated funds in the form of salary and other costs making it a win-win situation for the party. In the end, it is the money allocated for somebody but is being used for someone else. On one hand they are working for the poor, generating employment  and on the other hand, they are keeping the poor “poor”, whom they can use in future for their political motives; be it as protests (how significant are protests in today’s India is another discussion), or using their deaths as a tool or at the best using their caste and creating agitation for reservation. Further, AAP has now included logistics to it by adding the door to door delivery services like ration delivery and other delivery services. Who would bear the transportation, manpower and other costs? And before you compare door to door ration delivery by AAP and the centre’s scheme, you should discern the difference between sending an ambulance for a person dying and sending it for a person who requires a routine checkup.  And if I am mistaken and the centre is also delivering it to everyone, they should also stop this. One wrong does not make the other wrong ‘Right’.

Committees require suitable people. Putting the people of your liking on the places you want starts looking nasty right away. The Delhi Government’s proposal of Chief Minister’s Urban Leadership Fellows Program is a striking example of this; they wanted to award fellowships without conducting the exams. The LG asked for the exam and they did not take the proposal ahead saying “the LG killed the scheme”. I guess, one of the major issues with the Jan Lokpal Bill from AAP govt was also related to this.

Arvind Kejriwal is not just following Indian National Congress’ footsteps but is surpassing them without giving any kind of chance to his counterparts. Most of his counterparts cannot think beyond Family-Muslim-Dalit-Yadav-and-so-on (in that order) arithmetic.

Offering freebies and wooing the voters is an old tactic. Kejriwal has also been employing this tactic. But again, he takes it a step ahead. According to the LG Outcome report, the Delhi Government made a proposal of Health Insurance Scheme which was rejected by the LG. According to this scheme, the Delhi Government would be able to use vacant beds in the private hospitals for the general public for free. In short, cost born by the private hospitals and credit claimed by the AAP government. If Private hospitals feel like doing charity they can, but they have no obligations to do so. Arvind Kejriwal could have appealed to the people directly for this, as PM Modi did for waiving gas subsidies and other subsidies but then the credit would go to the people and not the government. Claiming the credit has a higher priority than the work. That is one reason why the pollution in Delhi hasn’t been fixed so far. Heavily criticizing Reliance Power and denigrating their reputation was also a strategy to put pressure on them to reduce the electricity prices and later claim the credit. He tries to do charity on someone else’s money. He does not even use his/his government’s money. And when he does not succeed, he starts hurling abuses as we have seen in the past.

Not only charity but he tries to use other’s money for his party as well. The report also mentions a few proposals which superficially look like they serve the people but in reality are only serving the party. One item was to get 600 LED screens so that the communication between the people and government increase. What good would displaying pollution index do? Instead of installing large commercial air purifies make more sense and so on. Usage of LED during the natural disasters was the second reason given in the report. Seriously? What natural disaster? Are Floods because of poor drainage system a natural disaster? Does putting money on LED screens instead of fixing drainage system make sense? Or the hidden agenda behind 600 screens is to advertise CM Kejriwal?

It could be clearly deciphered that all the proposals and other schemes(free water/electricity/wifi) not mentioned in the report add cost i.e. they demand a colossal amount of funds. If LG had endorsed the reports, he would have had a moral obligation to provide with a suitable funding source for numerous infeasible proposals. If after signing the files, he would not have made the funds available, Mr Kejriwal and the team would have said:“The centre is blocking the funds, if funds presented a problem why did LG approve the files in the first place”. This could be a reason why he did not approve the files. Thanks to the Supreme Court the LG is out of the loop now and does not have to think about that.

On the other hand, Arvind Kejriwal, who portrays it as a win, will now have to directly get involved in this. How he arranges the funds is his problem now. Maybe in the not-too-distant future, we can catch sight of him complaining “the centre is not allocating enough funds for Delhi”. On top of that, there can be a possibility that the Delhi government starts borrowing irrationally and leaving the state in a difficult situation in future. He might actually do this as Delhi is just a rung of the ladder as were people like his former team members, Anna Hazare, etc. ushering him to his end goal. People, especially in Delhi, might not predict the storm that is approaching them but if I were any political party I would not even field a single candidate in Delhi Assembly election. Simply because any government who comes next and tries to fix the issues would be thought of as evil. How? Please see the political-economical turmoil in countries like Greece and Italy. People literally died there because of debt & bankruptcy leading to staggering taxes. Moreover, we could also refer to the state of economy UPA2 left for NDA in 2014.

Mr Kejriwal can claim the Supreme Court’s verdict as a win but in reality, it is a win for the LG as he would not be held accountable for  Delhi’s ‘Greece-ification” in the coming years.

One of the files pending approval from LG was Establishing District Level Committees for withdrawal of Petty Offenses. Kejriwal and Party wanted to withdraw cases (petty offences) for minors, senior citizens and vulnerable section of the society as they clog up the judicial system and pose a great inconvenience to these petty offenders. What is a petty offence? Are offences like Chain snatching, eve teasing, fraud at ration shops, cheating etc petty offences?   Who constitutes the vulnerable section of the society? I guess the different vote bank communities are part of this section. For minors, I agree the punishments can be lenient, but in no case, they should be let go without a punishment. Simply because in no time these tiny petty offenders would greatly scale up their offenses.

If you remember the most destructive culprit in Nirbhaya case was a minor. Instead of finding ways to improve/speedup Judicial system they came up with this. With AI tools penetrating judiciary and different law firms already using AI to reduce the paralegal work and so on, why can’t the government do the same? Either they can make fun of Startup India and Make In India or they can actually contribute towards these two. Their choice is clearly visible. Incidentally, they are the same party who claimed they could hack EVM in less than 90 minutes. Although they brought their own hardware, used their own processor/micro-controller, used their own Operating System(if they found running bare-metal application complex), and ran their own software application. I think they assumed that people would not know the difference between hacking with programming, what they did was simple embedded systems programming, any engineer who has ever executed the most basic ‘Hello World’ program in an embedded environment would agree with me.

Arvind Kejriwal, being an IIT alumnus has not proposed even one innovative idea during his tenure so far. The most fortunate or unfortunate part is that an ex-chaiwallah is rendering exactly what is expected of an ex-IIT/ex-IRS.

Everybody who has followed his politics knows that he is an over-ambitious person and wants to stop not at anything less than the designation of a PM. Being ambitious is not  bad at all and everyone should be ambitious. But, a person should not ruin something to achieve his/her goals. Arvind Kejriwal is using Delhi solely as a step forward towards his ultimate goal. The very first time when Mr Arvind Kejriwal became the Chief Minister of Delhi although only for 49 days, I was thinking that this person would have a lot of novel ideas but would lack a much required political acumen to stay in power. I think most of the people in India would have thought so.  The way he had reacted to unfamiliar situations also provided a hint that he might actually be lacking those skills. But today, it could comfortably be said that I was mistaken. His political skills are way better than anybody could have expected. None of the regional political parties and their leaders can parallel Mr Kejriwal’s political skill set. His political practices and beliefs will not only create devastating effects on the people of Delhi but also on the entire nation, which unfortunately is obscure at this moment.

“Terrorism was considered a regional problem and not a global issue until a highly qualified engineer blew up a tower” and “Delhi did not become a failed state until an eminently qualified engineer used it as a stage for his political ambitions”.

Dear Kamal Haasan : Be modest. There is no need for hyperbolic eye grabbing techniques

Kamal Haasan has once again stepped into controversy. He is, time and again manifesting his lack of self-esteem and leadership quality but more and more bestowing his self-deprecating personality much to the ire of the public and his fans. He is profusely apologetic of his lineage of the much acclaimed Iyengar Brahmin caste, his Hindu identity and his social status.

Presently he is hosting the Tamil version of ‘Big Boss’ reality show on Vijay TV. This programme is drawing much anger of the people in Tamil Nadu as the entire structure of the show has become a disgusting display of awful synergy of the participants. This is typical of any other Big Boss programmes, yet this sort of TV display being first of its kind in TN, and hence the show has obviously offended the conservative Tamil viewers.
Having entered into politics, Kamal Haasan is bound to present himself as a ‘messiah’ to win hearts of his prospective voters. The usual political rhetoric matters like ‘upliftment of repressed or marginalised people of the society etc would play an important role for a new Political outfit. So certain amount of ‘self-veto’ is required since Kamal Haasan hails from an upper stratum of the society to sullen his present image of fair complexioned Brahmin. However, the main impediment is his inherent ‘narcissism’ that is causing all the damage. Kamal Haasan is extremely narcissist and apologist as well. He sees all evils in his own caste, religion, social set up, upbringing and all.
When Kamal Haasan denounced his own caste (Iyengar Brahmin), it does not mean the Iyengar caste itself is trivial.
So, let us rejoice some world-famous Iyengars before we further move forward to feel sorry about Kamal Haasan and before we too get that ‘remorseful’ feeling of the Iyengar community itself.
The ace Srinivasa Ramanujam, Jayalalitha, Krishnamachary Srikkanth, Sir Chakravarty Rajagopalachari, Hema Malini, Yoga Guru B.K.S. Iyengar, Gen Sundarji, TV Sundaram Iyengar (TVS), Vyjayanthimala Bali, Dr K Kasturi Rangan, Seshadri Chari, Sir Bashyam Iyengar, TT Krishnamachary, KN Govindacharya (RSS ideologue), JaiRam Ramesh of Congress, Lyrisist Vali, Singer PB Srinivas, MS Sathyu, S Venkataraghavan, K Parasaran, Mohan Parasaran, Gopalakrishna Gandhi, Rajamohan Gandhi, Srinivasan Jain (Journo guy), Annamacharya, Latha Rajanikanth, Prof KT Bhashyam(Kannada (Professor), Masti Venkatesh Iyengar (Kannada poet), Sri Sri (Telugu poet), Raghuram Rajan. The list is endless.
In an effort to show up of undue and unwarranted emotion, Kamal Haasan on 30th June 2018 tweeted saying that  “I refused to fill in the caste&religion column in both my daughters’ school admission certificate” However this was quickly picked up by Twitterati’ and was heavily trolled, exposing his hypocrisy.
Some follower brought to fore an old video recording of his daughter Shruthi Haasan’s interview wherein she proudly claims that ‘I am an Iyengar’ I am Shruthi Haasan Iyengar to the interviewer Mr Niranjan Iyengar. The Twitterati replied to his tweet implying that ‘Sir charity begins at home’ By not filling the forms with caste names is not going to solve the problem, first, we should raise our children w/o knowing their caste’. The unexpected negative reaction of the followers, in fact, surprised Kamal Haasan.
Times have changed now and the birth lineage and caste of any person are being taken in a good spirit in India now, rather feeling superior of or inferior of their caste. Instead of going hyperbole, it is better to remain silent on such issues and be modest in order to win over the people of all strata of society. There is nothing sinful in feeling proud of our family lineage and in fact, our creativity is the gift of our forefathers.
What is required for an aspiring Politician (if he is sincerely dreaming of a utopian society) is modesty. He should not go either way in an extreme manner and get badly checkmated by his own duplicity.
Since our mainstream media is heavily Leftist oriented in ideology, such a self-deprecating drama is necessary to get publicity on their media and get marked as a ‘secular’ and ‘progressive’ This is the course even Arvind Kejriwal follows with this mistaken notion. However, the nation is now breathing a clean air, relieved of such a false duplicity pollution. Such a self-deprecation may even prove counterproductive for his political ambitions.

Hitchhikers Guide to 2019 elections, FDI, Revolutions and Indian Democracy

My favourite quote from Hitchhiker’s Guide to Galaxy by Douglas Adams is

Not unnaturally, many elevators imbued with intelligence and precognition became terribly frustrated with the mindless business of going up and down, up and down, experimented briefly with the notion of going sideways, as a sort of existential protest, demanded participation in the decision-making process and finally took to squatting in basements sulking.

An impoverished hitch-hiker visiting any planets in the Sirius star system these days can pick up easy money working as a counsellor for neurotic elevators.

Is Social Media the cradle of Revolutions in the 21st century?

We don’t have enough time nowadays to read good books and do a post-reading analysis with friends! Well! That’s the current reality of life and we have to embrace it. Maybe it could also be that we are in such a time where every gratification we want, can be found on Social media. Gratifiers come in this social order WhatsApp, facebook, twitter, youtube, google, StackOverflow, Snapchat? etc., But, there is much gratification online/vigilantism which is felt through #hashtag trends. Some psychiatrists observe that this could be because of the fear of moving away from real life. The growing comforts/solace of online gratification sometimes make many of us lose sight of the forest for the trees. BiggBoss trends? Sports Trends? Election Trends? All sounds too familiar isn’t it? How about #loveisland ones!

Are Revolutions a bad thing in a stable democracy?

Happy American Independence Day – 07/04/2018. We Indians celebrated American Independence day on 4th of July being Indians. We celebrate everything with everyone – the most (in)tolerant society! Indians love America, Americans and anything American – quite honestly where would we be without American sitcoms! I am not being cynical but I mean it positively. What was American Independence day all about? It started as a revolution but ended up in something else and later was declared as Independence Day. It’s too much to ask of people to go find out on Quora or Reddit about revolutions. I am sure there must be an app on playstore where one could swipe left/right to read about revolutions. But, what’s the point if one doesn’t go deep into Why’s of revolutions and if they are not asking why are they a bad thing in a stable democracy where there is a GDP surge and cost of pulses are reducing?

Arab spring/Revolution to bring down the Regimes (2010)

If the American Revolution is too ancient – yes it is. Definitely, We can’t relate to it. But, what about the Arab spring of 2010. It is fresh in the memories of people on Twitter at least. When most of us were new to social media and we hardly had 5 to 20 followers. We were following Rajdeep for Economic opinions whilst he dished out 2002 stories. Well it was in 2010 when people through out the world felt an opportunity. Social media was not just about uploading pics and getting likes but it could be used for bigger/better things, closer to real life things – like Revolutions! World got a taste of the power.

Am not ‘value judging’ whether it was a good/bad revolution.

The effects of the Tunisian Revolution spread strongly to five other countries: Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain, where either the regime was toppled or major uprisings and social violence occurred, including riots, civil wars or insurgencies. Sustained street demonstrations took place in Morocco, Iraq, Algeria, Iranian Khuzestan, Lebanon, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman and Sudan. Minor protests occurred in Djibouti, Mauritania, the Palestinian National Authority, Saudi Arabia, and the Moroccan-controlled Western Sahara. A major slogan of the demonstrators in the Arab world is ash-shaʻb yurīd isqāṭ an-niẓām (“the people want to bring down the regime”)

A quick and lazy search on google got me the following revolutions:

The Haitian Revolution
The Iranian Revolution
Cuban Revolution
Chinese Revolution(s)
Young Turk Revolution
Taiping Revolution/Rebellion
The October Revolution
The Glorious Revolution
The American Revolution

A Brazilian revolution caused military regime change to Democracy

The one which I was most interested in was the Brazilian Revolution which led to Democracy from the Military rule in 1985

Brazilian history since 1985 is the contemporary epoch in the history of Brazil, beginning when civilian government was restored after a 21-year-long military regime established after the 1964 coup d’etat. The negotiated transition to democracy reached its climax with the indirect election of Tancredo Neves PMDB by Congress. Neves belonged to Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, an opposition party that had always opposed the military regime. He was the first civilian president to be elected since 1964.

Human history since Renaissance is rife with stories of revolutions and mutiny. There has been transitions between Regimes to military governments via Coups to Democracies to Autocratic to Fascist to Colonial rules etc.,!

A revolution caused a regime change in India

Scams which were rampant in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014. India was fed up. India Against Corruption revolution happened. In parallel Gujarat model championed by Narendra Modi was seen as the automatic leader to take over the mantle of taking India forward. Hence, regime change happened.

It’s 2018 and it’s 71st year of Indian Independence! What’s changed and what led to 2014? Massive corruption by Government agencies led to a big victory to the ablest leader Narendra Modi. True to his words, Modi & his team has been constructing roads, Reforming tax structures, taking electricity to the last mile. Banking is at the forefront of all the schemes. Modi is running with development agenda and winning one election after the other. If one was to look at the history of humankind – a leader at any point in time would be known for only one thing. But, here we have a man called Narendra Modi who has achieved so much in such a short time and will be known for many things.

Perception of loss felt by parallel economy leading them to demand another regime change

In stock markets from wall street, New York to Hong Kong to Auckland, There is a thumb rule! “Buy in bear and Sell in the bull”. Be it the cinema industry, IT industry or whatever, everything is measured Quantitatively i.e. Difference between the amount earned and the amount spent in buying, operating, or producing something should always be Positive.

Indian parallel economy is going through a survive battle. Shadow, parallel economies refusing to join mainstream businesses are gazing towards an oblivion. They have scuttled and taken a severe beating. Scams which were rampant in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 seems to have vanished. How? It points to watertight policies from the top. It seems like the pace of the reforms and lack of time to ‘Gamify’  the reforms/policies have caused more frustration!

How to stop Modi and effect a regime change? Politically not improbable but difficult. So, the Right wing who worship and back Modi looks for two things – Economic reforms(GST, co-operative federalism etc.)  and Hinduism reforms(UCC, Ram Mandir, RTE etc.). Any dent to these will definitely hurt modi. So, It appears like the opposition is going to adopt a Denting model which 30% effort on Religious reforms and 70% effort on Economic reforms ably backed up by MSM, lobby groups etc., [PS: 30%, 70% is just a feeling – not some concrete number.]

The opposition is out of power except in Punjab, Karnataka, Bengal – how will Denting Model work?

It’s not easy to dent an Economy of a country as big as India. Especially when the interested groups are sitting in opposition benches with hardly any state governments under the opposition control. The only way to effect any dent is to let businesses outside of India with a strong Indian presence to pull out! Why would a business pull out of Indian economy which is enjoying a GDP surge? India is one of the three emerging nations(China, Brazil, India) where all the Asset management companies are putting their bet on Financial assets, infrastructure assets and Enterprise assets.

Emerging world seems to hold the potential and is a hot cake for all seasoned investors. There are lot of youtube videos of panel discussions where people have spoken openly of the opportunities begging to be picked up. One such set of numbers are below. They need emerging markets because that’s how the “Investment portfolios” of developed countries can show some growth rate. They collect money in developed countries as premiums, they will have a set period of time to make a profit on the pile of cash. How they do it is the problem of Asset Management companies. But, emerging countries like India, China, Brazil seem to be in the story of their growth model.

Growth markets suggest :

60% of global GDP growth comes from Emerging Markets which was just 50% just a decade ago.

Emerging markets have 85% of world’s population.

By 2030, 90% of Middle class population growth.

By 2030, 90% Middle class spending growth.

In developed world average age is 46 years.

In emerging world it’s 26 years.

By 2030 – 1.7 Million workforce will get added per week!

Just one wildfire is all it takes – Possibilities – looks like all they need

Global investors have many parameters but the most important one being Government policies vs how people perceive it. Government policies are quite hard for a common man to understand be it good for short term/long term, bad for the middle class in short-term and such. For every policy change/amendment – Opposition loves to critique in a negative way(sans objectivity) and use repeated lies and orchestrated uprisings against every policy good for the nation. It’s an attempt to cause perception damage. The impact of perception damage if it’s only economic it would not be effective but it seems the success of these perception damage lies in Social impact. If one was to observe from 2014 to 2018 there has been an alarming increase in inorganic skirmishes throughout the country between castes, communities and religions.

There is a 1/10th rule in Sales/Marketing. If one was to approach 1000 customers only 10% i.e. 100 might come back. So, the opposition seems to encourage covertly all the uprisings. After all, this is in their best interests. Even the military is not spared. One might wonder if OROP was not put in place – the social uprisings would have caused a social wildfire. Even unfortunate Rape incidents are somehow linked to regions, caste and religions. From orchestrated uprisings to genuine people reactions resulting in movements -everything seems to lead to Can Government survive this social unrest and hunger strikes?

Can Government stand the onslaught of people perception and still continue to hold on to policies?

The moment Government gives in or gets threatened by these freelancer revolutionists – FDI, Asset management, Hedge funds to all FII will consider it as Early signs of Weakening Government control on policies. They will slowly pull out and the market will dry up, bringing the economy it’s knees! Just one wild fire is all it takes for the opposition to create a crack and enter the power corridors again.

If opposition wants to come back why would businesses be interested in this futile exercise of pulling out of Bullish Indian Economy? Yes! Businesses keep looking for opportunities to invest and get lands in return or any other favours or an easy passage to start a business against their competitors. It’s an investment for these external businesses to invest in Revolutions! The ROI is usually so high that they are always motivated to cause Mutiny, Uprisings, Revolutions to topple the existing arrangements and start fresh!

Cycle of Regime Changes – Revolutions goes on and on and on

The above image which I put together to explain what I think is happening since Aeons. At the centre of our world – there are Economic Empires (could be countries or lobbies) they know what’s good for them. For any given country – The Blue ovals imply different types of Governments from a Military rule, democracy, colonial Rule, autocracy or theocracy. There is always oscillations between blue ovals. The transitions are always accompanied by revolutions supported by external, internal opposition. The Red arrow with investment signifies that ‘Economic powers’ invest in Revolutions. When the blue oval moves to next stage – They reap the benefits through high ROI (Return on investments).

So, basically, no revolution at national scale can happen without someone somewhere investing into it!

There is a theory which states that if anyone ever discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened

Conclusion:

We as a country should stop getting kicked around by external economic/business interest lobbies and try to grow as a developed economy and accept the next set of challenges. The opposition should stop investing on Revolutions for Political/Economical ROI and rather focus on Quantitative/Qualitative participation!

PS: This is just my opinion and definitely not intended to point at any party/individual. Apologies in order if there is any co-incidence.

Are government housing schemes killing vernacular architecture?

0

India has 705 tribal communities. Every tribal community has their own culture and tradition. This culture is well reflected in their food habit, attire, art, architecture and even in their settlement layout. For example in some tribal village, mud is used, which is locally found and are good insulator and binder. This keeps the house cool in harsh summer. In the centre of Gadaba community village(Mountain ethnic groups), stand the sadar, the community meeting place. Near to which the village deity is found where all the function takes place. Dongria tribe settlement pattern is linear and is constructed in accordance to sun path and wind direction. Different communities have their different number and size of the room, which generally depends on their community occupation.

The vernacular architecture of these tribal reflects their occupation, region, climatic condition, daily activities and many more. Every vernacular practice including building material, food or colour, respect their immediate environment. Years of experience and indigenous knowledge have resulted in such a beautiful practice. But people from the high-rise building, who have adopted many things from the foreign world, have the same parameter to measure everyone. A person rich with indigenous knowledge is judged by the literacy criteria of whether he/she can read or write a foreign language or not.

Government/ NGOs have many schemes for housing for both rural and urban. And they come with a particular amount of money and at times with a particular design from somewhere. It does not consider the local context. Though the initiative is nice about providing housing for all, the question of uplifting at what cost remains unanswered.

Although PMAY, IAY and some state housing board have mentioned of designing as per local technology, the reality takes a different course. In south India, a good amount of research is done on vernacular architecture. But places like Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Northeast India, where housing itself is a problem and number of tribal community is large, researching on vernacular architecture remain concealed. In short-term such initiatives look really good but in long-term, it just kills some proficient practice, culture, tradition, and knowledge.

The concrete industry is one of the leading producers of greenhouse gas and has the power to damage the most fertile layer of the earth, the topsoil. Concrete look fancy and the only medium to save from natural disasters, but studies are there that show how vernacular architecture protect from harsh natural calamities. For example in the coastal region of Odisha kadi and Baraga (no reinforcement) are applied. Such structure prevented loss of life during 1999 super cyclone of Odisha. Even vernacular architecture is itself a medium to avoid natural disaster and a way to tackle climate change.

Now all the tribal villages that are connected by roads have brick walls and concrete/tin roof. Connecting tribal area with the mainstream should not mean destroying their practice and beliefs but should be looked as an opportunity to learn more and to rejuvenate the learning that we have unlearned. At the same time, this should be treated as a medium to give them the opportunity that they deserve.

Serial ‘Porus’ and the myth of Alexander the Great

0

On evenings these days, we have a television serial “Porus” on Sony channel. It’s a lavishly mounted production; the costliest-ever at Rs 500 crores. The producers retain the IP rights of the serial, Sony is a mere first broadcaster of it. The makers of the show have a global audience in mind.

The serial has reached a critical stage. Alexander is about to engage Porus in the battle of Hydaspes (Jhelum), 326 BC. The most popular version of Alexander’s story is by Arrian, a general during the reign of Roman emperor Hadrian. We in India have grown up on the story how Porus valiantly went down to Alexander but was restored to his kingdom by the conqueror, impressed as the winner was by Porus’ bravery. Alexander then turned on his heels, his hands forced by his weary army, abandoning his plan to dig deep into India’s heartland where the mighty Magadha empire, ruled by Chandragupta Maurya, would certainly have brought him to grief. He couldn’t reach home, dead in the city of Babylon (Iraq) from a raging fever though there are also different accounts of him being poisoned or succumbing to alcohol-induced issues.

This story of our childhood lacks credulity. We all know that neither Alexander nor Porus died in the battle. Alexander’s generosity is beyond belief for he was an exceptionally cruel invader. He rose to the Macedonia throne killing his father and brothers; there are mentions of him killing his friends around the dinner table; the entire citizenry of a country being butchered by his frenzied sword. Why would he leave Porus standing on his feet?

Alexander massacred the complete male population at Tyre and Gaza, razed the royal palace at Persepolis and as per a doyen historian of his, A.B. Bosworth, “he spent much of the time killing and directing killing, and, arguably, the killing was what he did best”

The modern historians have trouble believing the account of Arrian. After all, his seven books on Alexander were written some 400 years after Alexander was dead and buried. Arrian borrowed hugely from Alexander’s contemporary Ptolemy’s account which is widely regarded as hugely unreliable. Sure there is material in Plutarch’s Life of Alexander and Diodorus Siculus’ Library of History but the legend of Alexander as it has come down to us in the last few centuries is a lot of baloney for authentic historical records on the man are missing. The Journals of Alexander is a pure forgery.

The tale of his “weary army” is unauthentic too: it is proven beyond doubt that he kept replenishing his army with fresh legs from home, replacing his dead and tired soldiers regularly. Mercenaries and young men from his conquered territories also served the purpose. The truth is: there is no contemporary, authentic historical record of Alexander prevailing over Porus.

The fact is that Alexander’s military exploits concern just 10 years. He did capture Persia and he did travel 3000 miles to the doors of India. But most of it was unplanned. He wanted to outdo his father Phillip, began with minor raids in the neighbourhood, claimed Persia and kept pressing on before he was made to turn his back by the Indian challenge. Not for a second though anyone must doubt that Alexander wasn’t one of the greatest military commanders the world has ever seen.

Historians have noticed a thread in the making of “Alexander industry”. He was contemporary to the Roman civilization but could never set his foot in Italy. Quite a few Roman emperors, generals and their “historians”, built up his legend and measured themselves against him to add a halo around own greatness. The term “Alexander the Great” was first used in a Roman comedy by Plautus in second century BC, some 150 years after Alexander’s death. In 51 BC, Marcus Tullius Cicero drooled at prevailing over a minor local insurgency only because the field of action happened to be one where Alexander once fought. “Pompey the Great” was hailed as the Alexander of his age after he returned victorious from Africa in the 80s BC. Julius Caesar similarly visited the tomb of Alexander in Alexandria during his times which was described by Roman poet Lucan as a stunt: “one demented despot paying home to another.”

Successive generations have built up the legend of Alexander. One of Alexander’s great admirer was Napoleon. He once commissioned a table which had Alexander’s profile at the centre surrounded by other military giants of the ancient world. This stunning piece in porcelain and gilded bronze ended up in Buckingham Palace.

True, Alexander was a great military general but Roman historians have tended to soak his legend for the benefit of their own great generals and emperors. When colonialism and imperialism of the West spread its dark shadow across the East, the image of Alexander was further refurbished to show an all-conquering hero from the West taking on the chaotic East.

The great Russian general Marshal Zhukov for one was convinced that Alexander never defeated Porus. Addressing the cadets of Indian Military Academy in Dehra Dun in 1957, the great Russian general who chased Hitler’s army down over 2000 km from Stalingrad to Berlin during World War II, was emphatic that Alexander had been beaten by Porus. He compared Alexander’s defeat no better than Napoleon’s own reverse in Russia. When an invader is chased out of a country it’s defeat, pure and simple. Both Alexander and Napoleon had their armies decimated by local forces.

Nobody knows how serial “Porus” would turn out in coming weeks. There is little doubt though that he was one of India’s earliest defenders against foreign invaders who chose the northwestern route to eye, loot and pillage our exceptional country. At a time when Lutyens media and corrupt academicians and politicians are hell-bent on diluting the spirit of nationalism and patriotism, “Porus” is a welcome presence in our drawing rooms.

Will JD(U) cross the edge of NDA alliance in Bihar, an answer by Game Theory

0

It’s no longer a rumour that everything is not well within Bihar’s ruling alliance partners I.e. BJP and JD(U). If history is examined carefully, this seems to be following similar pattern what Bihar has observed prior to divorce of BJP-JD(U) in 2012 and later RJD-JD(U) in 2017. The pattern starts from planting stories in newspapers about internal rift over an issue, denying these stories till the time is ripe to strike at the root of alliance, and then final strike at the time when partner is completely unaware. For the first time, communalism became the planted issue, though it was in alliance with the same ‘communal’ party for last 17 years. The second time, it was corruption, though it entered into a partnership with a party known for corruption and jungle raj records. As of now, the current ruling alliance has completed two of the three described steps of an observed pattern where all leading newspapers are reporting over this matter, but leaders are denying any chances of separation.

How does game theory explains this situation? There could be three possible scenarios. First, JD(U) cross over to UPA. Second, JD(U) creates its own bloc in Bihar which can have other parties as its junior allies. Third, JD(U) remains in NDA. Lets analyse all three and conclude.

First, there is the probability of crossing over to UPA as congress, the only national party in UPA – Bihar, has already made an offer. However, the probability is very low for many reasons.

1. Congress is a national party but not a dominant partner in Bihar. It is RJD which will have greater say in alliance strategy and RJD is clearly not in favour of accepting JD(U), specially after the bitter experience of alliance breakup.

2. Even if JD(U) is allowed to enter into UPA, its not going to get desired results for JD(U) as the number of seats allotted will not be higher than what it will be getting in NDA. In such situation, JD(U) will prefer to choose NDA as BJP plays second fiddle role in state politics and position of JD(U) leaders are much better than what was under RJD alliance.

3. Crossover to UPA will further dent its leaders credibility which is itself at all time low at present. Therefore, this option is likely to be discarded.

On the other hand, there is a higher probability of creating a new bloc by quitting NDA along with other supportive partners. Given the bitter experience of going solo in 2014 Lok Sabha election, JD(U) does not want to go alone and therefore, will try to win allies from smaller partners in NDA and UPA. From UPA, congress and HAM are potential allies. However, the track record of JD(U) in last six years are not trustworthy for Congress to risk its all weather ally, RJD. HAM does not have much stake in case it rejoins JD(U).

From NDA, LJP as well as RLSP are two small but strong political parties which can bring strong vote base for JD(U). However, LJP will weigh its option against future uncertainty. As of now, LJP is very well placed in NDA and is expected to gain much more strength in absence of a clear majority of BJP in upcoming Lok Sabha election. Also, LJP position becomes much more important in absence of JD(U) which they will definitely keep in mind before crossing over to new alliance led by JD(U).

Lastly, trust factor over JD(U) is at all time low which will also play an important role in LJP in taking the final decision. RLSP is expected to be happier in NDA in absence of JD(U) as vote bank of JD(U) overlaps with theirs. Considering all these permutations and combinations, it is highly unlikely that LJP will quit NDA and in its absence, JD(U) is not expected to risk its state government just to contest a higher number of Lok Sabha seats.

Third, the probability of remaining in NDA is highest as the other two probabilities are smaller. In such situations, game theory suggest that JD(U) is playing the chicken game in which one player chickens out at last minute in order to minimise its loss, with the expectation that other player will also follow the same. If other player does not chicken out, he wins this game. This could be a well thought out strategy by JD(U) to maximise its seat share in an alliance where it is having the happiest existence.

It is just a matter of time to witness the execution of this defined game. Entire nation is watching this game which will have a definite impact on national politics. But, the impact will me much more on Bihar and its politics.

Why I am Not a Troll

Why I am Not a Troll

It has been quite some time since the BJP government was enjoying overwhelming support from one spectrum ie Social Media users. The BJP Govt’s achievements can be argued upon the basis of merit of the content but it was definitely a fresh change that most of the ministers were following the example set by PM Modi and ministers were using the social media to their advantages. The result is also evident as social media platforms are over populated with fans or supporters for BJP as committed as the cadres on the road. It is safe to assume that No anti-BJP survey will pass the test of online scrutiny and if online polling is the future of voting, BJP Government is here to stay for a long time.

However as the destiny unfolds in mysterious ways, a new spectacle has come to public viewing. BJP online supporters are largely from a young, educated, achievers group who do not believe in saying “YES MINISTER” to anyone. Looking at the BJP online support group in a broad category will define the group as people who have achieved their success in the previous governments under UPA and various state Govt but still feel that whatever was offered to them was not enough. They are also aware of the ongoing events all-around the world and simply not ready to accept the politicians as ruling elites which had been the case so far.

There comes the biggest twist in the tale of “Bhakts” as one may call them. With the advent of online followers, politicians are surrounded by supporters who are extremely aggressive and take the advantage of the online anonymity or ‘out of reach’ dimension. These supporters put forward the views rather innovatively. This becomes more prominent as such aggressive handles get more and more followers, the count of which is kind of a ‘status symbol’ for the new generation online users.

I could start adding the screenshots for such tweets but that would not add anything to the academic content of this article and hope that readers are already aware of such tweets/facebook posts etc.

Having explained the above, I like to stress upon the basic premise for this article- why I am not a troll.

The dictionary defines the trolling as ‘someone who leaves an intentionally annoying message on the internet, in order to get attention or cause trouble.’

Purely by that definition, any person posting abusive content online on a perpetual basis is to be considered a troll. A second category could be a lesser known person leaving messages online continuously to a big personality in the hopes of getting a reply, a like, a retweet or letting the millions of followers of the concerned person also read the troll’s comments. To elaborate further,  trolling would be a harmless exercise for the person being aimed at and could be easily forgiven as being naïve behaviour.

However, there would be another category altogether which will spew venom, spread hate, spread fake news, and send abusive messages all the time. These are not Trolls, these are plain criminals although the crime is not actually committed but given the right set of circumstances, these people will not hesitate to take law into their own hands.

There are enough laws to tackle the last category and no one should have any problem with getting such people behind bars. It is also requested through this article that such people are identified and punished in a quick trial.

But one must not fail to highlight the concrete efforts from mainstream media to call out most of the social media users as trolls and latest newspaper articles are full of the evidence which suggests every major SM handle is a Troll. The case can be concluded by recent newspapers articles without naming one of my favourite online person who has never abused anyone but was also called ‘Troll’.
This led me to analyze the pattern and directed me towards writing this article.

Modi, Yes, Mr Modi is the centre of this controversy despite having no role to play in the entire fiasco. It is almost concluded that 2019 elections will be a tough battle and opposition will not leave any stone unturned. One can easily arrive at the conclusion that the mindset of the people is guided by the ongoing news and current affairs. Till 2014 elections, the responsibility was lying on mainstream media and social media presence was limited. Thus controlling the channels and newspapers editors, press club, anchors could be a great factor in elections. However social media has now achieved greater significance and will play a vital role in the 2019 elections as users will continue to expose the fake agendas on TV/Newspapers reports.

Thus to ensure Mr Modi losing the election in 2019, it was imperative to label the entire social media as a ‘sewerage, garbage, gutter’ platform which is only inhabited by Trolls and nothing on social media is trustworthy.

This is a well thought out plan and there are serious planners for the same. To their utter surprise and happiness, out came the issue of Passport controversy for Mrs Sadia alias Tanvi. One thing led to another and it was surprising to see the immature handling of the issue by the concerned minister who could have simply presented her case that she was not involved and will get the facts verified. Instead, she chose to react by highlighting the abusive tweets and also went a step further by putting a poll for and against the trolling that she received. The said minister is a highly regarded person and is considered to be one of the best foreign ministers the country has ever had. However everyone is entitled for their opinion but still one would expect certain level of maturity from a cabinet minister. One can easily visit the tweet handles of Mr Modi, Mr Jaitley and others who are constantly abused online for no reasons. No one has seen them complaining about this online abuses ever.

There was not a moment lost before the mainstream media lapped onto the issue and painted the social media users as trolls. Ultimately it was a fitting revenge which the mainstream anchors had been eagerly awaiting for long.

To stress upon my point, I request the readers to follow closely the below in coming days up to 2019 elections-

•There will be a wave of the so-called right-wing tweet handle name/DP and will remain abusive or critical of BJP Govt or abusive of other politicians. This will ensure that all party spokesperson criticize online trolling or social media users in TV studios.
•There will be a wave of genuine handles pointing out the failure of BJP and Modi Govt. This will help in getting the agenda forward that even BJP supporters are deserting the party.
•There will be a general impression that Modi is losing in 2019 and BJP is responsible for not supporting the core voters or not bringing out the core demands. Without realizing that it is next to impossible for the Govt to put corrupt politicians and officers behind the bar in a judicial process or it is not a simple task to declare article 370 as null and void or making a Grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya when the matter is in Supreme Court
•There will be a great hue and cry on mainstream media about social media users and sane ones will be further underlined and attacked by MSM.

All in all, a campaign will be in full swing till 2019 with only one aim- How to defeat Modi and his supporters.

I would like to request readers to stay alert and continue doing the one job which was meant by the social media- to inform the facts to common people and bring out the agendas in MSM and to share interesting memes (last one added for keeping the platforms funny)

To end the article, I would request all social media users to remain responsible in their comments and remind them of the quote below:

I would particularly like to congratulate my young friends for their innovative use of social media. Their frank method of conveying opinions is extremely endearing. I urge youngsters to continue expressing and discussing freely.

Altnews or fake

altnews is also a fake news website
