It is an ancient temple located in the Indian state of Assam. Today, let’s explore this amazing and unique stone temple with beautiful carvings, Shri Shri Hayagriv Madhav Temple, present on Monikut Hill. The hill is located in the Assam’s Kamrup district in India, in a very beautiful and culturally rich place called Hajo. It is located about 30 km west of Guwahati (Assam’s main city), so it is easy for visitors to reach this destination.

According to the Kalika Purana, written in Kamarupa in the 11th century AD, the text refers to the creation of this avatar of Vishnu and his final abode on the hill of Monikut, where the present temple is located. Raghudeva Narayan, the king at that time, built the present temple in 1583. Some historians believe it was built around the 10th century by the king of the Pala dynasty. It is a stone temple where the image of Hayagriva Madhava (the embodiment of Lord Vishu) is found.

The Hayagriva Madhav Temple played an important role in reviving an extinct species of freshwater turtle known as the black softshell turtle. Therefore, this temple is not only culturally and historically significant, but it also contributes to the conservation of extinct freshwater turtles, which is a great contribution to our planet Earth, for us, and for the environment.

Here are some images of this amazing ancient temple, captured by myself:

Also, Here’s the image of extinct freshwater turtle species called black softshell turtle, which is conserved by the temple:

Being a very ancient temple, there are many things which this temple must get from the Government. Unfortunately, this temple is only working on a very little donation given by the devotees.

Through this article, I urge our authorities to take some action for the betterment and development of this Ancient temple, which is not only culturally important but it is contributing a lot to the environment as well.

Some facts about this temple:

  1. This temple is mostly made of stone with beautiful carvings on it.
  2. There is a lot of similarities of the stone carvings of this temple with Ajanta & Ellora Caves.
  3. Devotees are offered Bhog during the day time, the Bhog basically consists of Rice, Dal made with Pumpkin and Potatoes.
  4. The extinct species of Black soft-shell turtles are very friendly to the people.
  5. Some even believe that this temple was made even before 8th Century.
  6. There is a cave, which is also believed to be a way to Heaven, it is still a mystery.

If you visit this temple you will get to know a lot about this temple, there are many more interesting facts.
