Peace not a discourse, rather an objective

0

Many legends in different time period have defined peace in different ways. What stands out common across those definitions that peace doesn’t mean inaction. It also doesn’t mean absence of conflict. It very much is a state of affair attained through strategies involving military or non-military actions or both to create an environment of tranquility. If we look at it from India-Pakistan relationship point of view, historically, it has always meant something opposite to what the real essence of peace stands for. Pakistan, through asymmetrical warfare, keeps on attacking and killing citizens and military personnel of India while India found a way or two to avoid an armed conflict. Pakistan remained beneficiary of the Indian doctrine giving priority to a non existent mode of peace.

India lead by Atal Bihari Vajpayee tried immensely to give peace a chance. It worked round the clock to engage Pakistan despite Kargil war thrust upon herself by Pakistan. India witnessed a change in government in 2004 leading to a vacuum of strategy. Government of India under UPA rule did not demonstrate political will to implement an effective strategy to counter Pakistan’s asymmetrical warfare. India faced increased number of deaths and destruction including 26\11 carnage in Mumbai just because UPA’s belief that avoiding conflict would yield peace. It didn’t yield peace, rather, it ended up emboldening Pakistan’s believe in the doctrine to bleed India by thousands cut.

In current context, emboldened by past activities, Pakistan tried another nefarious cut by executing Pulwama incident. To their surprise, India reacted boldly in self defense by hitting terror sanctuary in Balakot. It didn’t only surprise Pakistan but also the entire world. This is not a doctrine India was known for afterall.  Pakistan once called Indian PM “Dehati Aurat” is now saying that Indian PM is a psychopath who can go to any extent. Manmohan Singh time and again went to Obama every time India got a cut by Pakistan. Now, Pakistan is begging for peace. This is a welcome change induced by revitalized Indian doctrine believing in the right  definition of peace.

The infidels next door, as Pakistani politicians brazenly keep calling Indians, have changed their strategy from hot and cold to consistently hot. In all likelihood, India would not completely de-escalate the situation at border neither India would let implicit economic restrictions on Pakistan get reduced. It’s a revitalized India under Narendra Modi, an India, which Pakistan hasn’t dealt with before and neither seems to have a strategy to deal with.

An open letter to Shah Feasal

0

Mr. Shah Feasal,

As you are entering the realm of politics under the constitutionally laid out Indian democratic process, I would like to share some of my thoughts on what your politics should be about. I hope you will take it in the right spirit.

I remember the time when you suddenly appeared in the political realm through social media route by tweeting some report with the tagline “Rapistan” in 2018. If not for your illustrious academic achievements of being an MBBS turned IAS topper from Kashmir, the tweet might have been lost in the daily chatter of social media world. I am very sure you had made up your mind when you sent out that tweet that you will be entering into politics because it was a calculated political tweet and you knew how would the system react to such shenanigans from a serving bureaucrat. You used the tweet as a launchpad for yourself to enter the murky world of Indian Politics. There is nothing wrong in that. At least you chose a real issue, we have a fair share of politicians using all sort of lies, cheap comments and outright repulsive statements to do their politics.

I, for one, was waiting to see when and how would you enter politics especially when the rumors started floating around that the state parties were lining up at your door to invite you to join their party. I must say I was relieved when you announced a few days back that you will be floating your own political party.

The mainstream parties in J&K state are the biggest culprits in taking the state to the situation it finds itself in today. They have build dynasties in the name of democracy, they have played on the sentiments of people to remain in power, they have covertly/overtly supported the separatists and terrorists to create an ecosystem of mistrust, fear and alienation, they have neglected their primary responsibility of governance and addressing people’s aspirations while filling their own and their ecosystem’s coffers. Today, the biggest question for Kashmir is not Independence but development of the state and fulfilling the aspirations of a common Kashmiri. These dynasties made sure that the alternate political leadership does not emerge in the state to challenge their hegemony by subverting the election process for local bodies through threats, boycotts, violence, and other means.

You are certainly one of the good ones, the Indian system has produced. You have been able to reach where you are by going through the grind of the Indian system whether it is the education, bureaucracy or administration. The system might not have produced you but it certainly played a guiding role in making you stand where you are standing. And now you will be entering into another Indian system of electoral politics – the most dangerous of all due to the umpteen pitfalls and temptations it has during the journey to the seat of power.

How do you approach your politics would define whether you will bring a breath of fresh air or the same old wine in a new bottle. I have no qualms about you playing politics with the government in Delhi, after all isn’t what most of the state political parties in the mainland India do. Be as strong a critique of the central government as you want to be but please just don’t play the same old soft separatism politics of the mainstream parties in the state. That might bring you to power but would not change anything on the ground for the people.

Since you have decided to embrace the Indian democracy, I would hope that you would fight with Delhi but not with India.

You have a unique opportunity where you have a certain following owing to your academic and service background and you can change the discourse of politics in the state and bring the fruits of development and progress to the state and its people. Isn’t that the real meaning of independence? I hope you work towards integration rather than separation. I hope you would play the politics of development and performance rather than polarization and violence.

My hopes took a beating when you supported the resolution submitted in Pakistan assembly to award Noble Peace Prize to Imran Khan and praised his leadership. I can understand the temptation to continue playing the same old politics which has yielded results for the political parties and organizations in the state but it will not change anything on the ground if that is what you joined the politics for. Given your background and academic achievements, I believe you must know what is the real power center in Pakistan and what its intentions are vis-a-vis Kashmir but if you still want to play the politics of optics, it would be a complete waste of your capabilities and talent.

I also got a chance to listen to you on the India Today conclave. This was the first time I got a small peek of your political position. Although we harbor different ideologies and opinions, I appreciated some of the points you had raised regarding the need to increase the political space and to address the feeling of alienation among Kashmiri youth. If you really want to address these issues you would have to resist the temptation of playing the old politics and start a new kind of positive politics to fulfill our shared dream of restoring Kashmir to its rightful place of being the heaven on earth.

Yours truly,
A mainland Indian citizen

Recent hybrid warfare in context of India: Societal challenges and way forward

0

Recently, India has witnessed a glimpse of Hybrid warfare which will be the case of future wars. The reason is the difference in the development of both countries. Pakistan cannot afford or win a conventional war, while at the same time India as an open society is vulnerable to psyops. However, it has provided a wonderful opportunity to explore the effect of societal impact, its challenges, and lessons learnt for full scale war. Here, it is worth mentioning that if Pakistan can exploit these vulnerabilities so easily, China can be serious threat.

Hybrid Warfare includes conventional weapons, irregular tactics, terrorism, unconventional means such as disruptive social behaviors, drugs, counter insurgency etc. In the conflict with Pakistan, India has been exposed to every counts of hybrid warfare. Pakistan used their 24 aircrafts for targeting Indian military facilities and befitting response was given by Indian military responses. Eventually, the attack was foiled. Simultaneously, the terrorist activities loomed over India and the army was continuously fighting it. Now, Pakistan tried to target the social quotient through cyber means especially through social platforms. In addition, there was continuous challenges on Kashmir front.

Now, the analysts have given the in-depth analysis of conventional war, terrorism, and irregular tactics. However, the unconventional means has yet to be explored. The data gathered by one gentleman on twitter (Sorry, I tried to trace him back but could not find his analysis) suggests that the some of the hastags were coming in the full speed from Pakistan. The data suggested that the hashtag “SayNoToModi” had 58% origin from Pakistan. It simply suggests that such hashtags will exert additional pressure to the government and disrupt the social harmony. Not to mention that some of the panelist who continuously appear on TV debates got caught in that narrative. For example, Congress leaning person named Sumant Raman as shown in Figure below.

However, I believe that it might not be his fault. It only suggests that a thorough research needs to be conducted to investigate the use of social platforms in context of hybrid warfare and countermeasures need to be established. In the Aftermath of the recent situation, it has only divided the society and both sides are guilty of that (me too). The more I think the more I realize that the political parties will try to get benefit of such divisiveness on the social platforms. I strongly believe that it is okay from election processes, but not right in the critical situations. However, the society needs to look at this situation more comprehensively and everyone needs to introspect.

I might be on the right side of the spectrum this time, but it is quite possible that I may on the wrong side of the spectrum next time. So, everyone needs to introspect and choose the social righteousness. As rightly said by Dr. Kalam in European Union Speech “Where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character. When there is beauty in the character, there is harmony in the home.

When there is harmony in the home, there is order in the nation. When there is order in the nation, there is peace in the world.” However, the speech was in context of world peace, but I would like to slightly digress from it and relate with the order in the nation with testing times. It will bring more structured response from the country in case of future warfare and conflicts. With this it will not wrong to conclude that the responsibility of every citizen increases manifolds.

MMRCA 2.0: What are the chance of participants?

12th Aero India Show was held in Bangalore from 20th February to 24th February. There are much talk about the MMRCA 2.0 tender competition to supply medium multi-role combat aircraft to the Indian Air Force. What are the chances of participants?

This is why Government is trying its best to speed up the new MMRCA 2.0 tender. However, before talking about the competition at hand, it would be worthwhile to look back at the results of the previous tender.

The six firms had competed in an earlier attempt to provide 126 fighter aircraft to the IAF, known as the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) program. The MMRC was scrapped after Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2015 had announce that India would instead procure 36 Rafale jets from France in government to government deal.

MIG – 35 in MAKS 2017, Air show

In April 2018, Indian Ministry of Defense published a Request for Information (RFI) for the procurement of 110 multirole combat aircraft for the country’s air force as a part of “Make in India” Initiative.

The six firm which are competing for the Indian Air Force contract worth 15 Billion Dollar are Boeing’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Lockheed Martin’s F-16 Fighting Falcon, Dassault Aviation’s Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon, SAAB’s Grippen and Russian United Aircraft Corporation’s MIG-35 have responded to the RFI.

According to the request, 17 fighter are to be delivered flight-ready fighter jets and should be start within 36 months from the date of signing of the contract and should be completed within 60 month, while remaining 93 would be built in India by a company chosen by the Indian Production Agency (IPA) under license and should be commence within 60 month after the signing of contract and be completed within 144 months. The document also specified that 82 of the aircraft should be single seat, with the rest being dual-seat jets can be used for pilot training.

At present, the effective combat strength of the IAF is a source of much concern for the country. According to the defense strategy, IAF should have at least 42 fighter squadrons at its disposal. However, due to a shortage of combat aircraft, the number of combat-ready squadrons could fall to as low as 30.

The production of homegrown Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas is moving at a sluggish pace. The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that IAF will soon have to decommission its obsolete MIG-21 fighters. Desperate times call for desperate measure- that is, at least, according to defense expert community.

According to the expert the MMRCA 2.0 will feature Aircraft of Six participant and Su-35 (Russia). At first glance, it would seem that the list of participant has not change since the first MMRC tender. The only difference is the addition of the Su-35.

However, while carrying the same names, all of the fighter jets have changed a lot technology-wise.

For example, Lockheed Martin will be presenting its enhanced F-16 Block 70 fighter jet, which carries cutting-edge on-board radio-electronic equipment and electronic warfare systems that are, in many aspects, just as good as the ones installed in the F-35 5th generation fighter.

Boeing will present its advanced F/A-18E/F Super Hornet with its increased combat radius, new EW suite, and more fuel-efficient engines. Even though the Eurofighter Typhoon lost to Rafale last time, now the European consortium will present a much improved version of this fighter jet. Some 550 of them are currently in use around the world. SAAB’s Gripen E is equipped with a more powerful thrust system and new avionics. SAAB claims that Gripen E was created in “a digital era” and is the jet of the future. 250 Gripen E jets are currently in operation, and the Swedish Air Force has about 100 of them. What concerns India is the fact that up to 30 percent of its parts are produced in the US.

As for the Russian MiG-29M/MiG-35, in the state that it was presented during the first MMRCA tender, its chances of winning the bid were rather slim. Moreover, unlike other participants, at the time, the MiG-35 had not yet been mass-produced and was not in service with the Russian Air Force.

However, since the first MMRCA tender, the Russian multi-role fighter jet has undergone dramatic changes for the better. The way it is today, it is completely in line with the requirements set by the Indian Air Force. Besides, Russia is ready not only to supply flight-ready aircraft, but also to transfer all the necessary technology and documentation to partner companies contracted to produce the fighters in India. Compared to the rest of the MMRCA 2.0 participants, this time Russia’s chances look much more promising.

According to some Russian expert, Indian government noted that Russia has traditionally offered a cheaper deal, but Defense expert believes that with the Lifecycle expectancy and repairs, the cost of Russian jets could end up being significantly higher.

However, Russia is now offering a wide range of after-sales services that comply with existing global standards. Ilya Tarasenko, vice president of the United Aircraft Corporation in charge of military and technical cooperation, also said that Russia is ready to use the client’s infrastructure to provide the full scope of after-sales services, which helps create new jobs and involve locals into the real sector of the economy.

Imran Khans will come and go: In Pakistan nothing is permanent but terrorism

0

The longer a battle rages, the more unimaginative people become in finding it’s solutions. And so in times as volatile as these, it is still not too late for every Indian to pick up a history book, and spot the pattern. No Pakistani politician is ever going to be able to give you a definitive solution to the Kashmir problem, because they won’t last long enough to do so. Stop waiting for the sun to set in the east for the 22nd time. If you seriously believe Imran Khan can make a difference, you are as incredibly naive as he is. People told him to stick to cricket, and I wish he really really did. That ’92 final was really something you know, and I can only imagine how well he would’ve done heading the PCB or ICC. But, this is a different ball game. You see, there hasn’t been a single Prime Minister in Pakistan that has lasted for a full 5 year term since 1947.

This is actually where the Pakistani PM stands!

It seems somewhat comical that this doesn’t give enough attention, but really, if one looks at it, the sequence of events is nothing but a bad long drawn out joke. It started with good old Liaquat Ali, Jinnah’s trusted lieutenant, getting shot in ’51. There were then a series of 1-2 year placeholder PMs like Bogra and Surhawardy till ’58. This was followed by 11 years of self proclaimed field Marshal Ayub Khan (Described by our own FM Sam as an “extremely handsome” but “average officer”). Then with 1969 came 2 years of General Yahya (Popularly known as Rangeela Raja – also sam Manekshaw’s 2IC pre independence) then 3 years of Zulfikar Bhutto who previously oversaw the genocide and breaking up of east Pakistan into Bangladesh. Post his hanging for corruption and murder, it was 11 years of General Zia – who died in a plane crash. Then two years of Zulfikar’s daughter Benazir (who many think is such a role model of women empowerment when all she was, was a failed Prime minister and a corrupt puppet who got her own brother murdered). Then came 2 years of Miyan Nawaz then 3 years of Benazir, then 3 years of Nawaz again, followed by a coup and 9 years of Gen Musharraf.

Status of Nawaz Sharif

After this in 2008, came Zardari for 5 years (As President not PM. PM Yousuf Geelani in the same time frame again got removed for corruption after 4 years). Then returned Nawaz, the prodigal son, for 4 years again before being removed for corruption and thus, we finally arrived at “Im the dim”. If there is one lesson to be learned from this history, it is that Imran Khan won’t last. The deep state won’t let him. Imran Khans will come and go. Only a societal transformation of a miraculous proportion will bring about the required change that will lead to the restructuring of the military-industrial complex, and make Purana Pakistan a “Naya Pakistan”. Either that, or sooner or later, there will be “No Pakistan”.

Why the US will not stop aiding Pakistan even after Donald Trump’s victory in 2016 elections

0

Ever since the vivisection of India the two neighbours, India and Pakistan, have met each other in the battlefield more than twice. Unlike those ‘quick triggering’ ones, but more like the major explosion of the Atom Bomb itself, a 4th war brings about an explosion of fear of the holocaust – as never before. It is amazing that when countries’ arms are twisted, the mighty destructive power of the Atom Bomb that has enticed global protests since Hiroshima, also brings about an equally powerful feather of peace.

The modes-operandi is simple. When that feather is seen dithering, the whole world cries out in unison STOP. No wonder, when a Pakistani minister offered a threat to use the dangerous bomb, it incited a global outcry. A 4th war between the two congenital enemies, India and Pakistan, is, therefore, not wished by anybody; and is unlikely. That is unless madness takes the supreme position.

Yes when provoked, the then Indian PM Mr Vajpayee did order his massive troupes to the nuclear powered Pakistan’s border, like before. But, it was this fear, reminding emperor Alexander’s troupe’s return from the edge of India that made Indian troupes aimlessly return back from Pak border without a fight.

In addition, tracing this and as if adding Gandhi’s ‘eye for an eye makes the whole world blind’ and telecom’s ‘it’s good to talk’ all ask both the countries to talk and sort the Kashmir problem out. Both countries talk, yet terrorist attacks do happen in India. And when one happens, almost as an obedient nation India condemns the attack, does the needed investigations and prides itself in finding the responsible country – Pakistan. And when Pakistan doesn’t believe its dossier of findings and its TV debaters, almost reminding North Korea, cry out ‘united we stand with the government’, India just shuts up. As time goes by, the same cycle of events continue. Unlike Gulliver’s Travel’s two hostile kings who don’t talk, these two take a clue from today’s teenagers and do a ‘break up n patch up’.

While this alone makes Pakistan the luckiest among the nuclear nations despite facing a much more formidable enemy that has defeated it several times, almost like a child in its mother’s lap, it also happens to get the comfort of the Chinese lap. So much so that, denting even its own fight against terrorism and its international dignity, the dragon land refuses to regard globally recognized Masood Ajhar as a terrorist.

It is because of these factors that almost with impunity Pakistan, on its part, educates its denizens against India, ferments trouble there, accuses India of oppressing Kashmiri people, trains and supplies terrorists to attack Indian civilians and then just casually says ‘no proof is supplied’.

Why is animosity so important for Pakistan?

It may look pretty obvious but as aired below the actual answer is deep and far from clear. It’s because; yes ‘brotherhood of Muslims’ (ummah) can be argued as enticing affinity towards the Muslim majority in Kashmir, but then, neither East Pakistani (Now Bangladeshi) Muslims were treated properly by them earlier, nor the rape and genocide facing Baloch Muslims are treated with any dignity today.

Yes, nostalgia of Muslim Mughal rule in India is cited as ‘We Muslims ruled over the Hindus’; and the consequent necessity of an unfinished business of converting Indians to Islam, as was done in Persia and Egypt, is aspired for. But then, Hindu converts to Islam (most Pakistanis) didn’t rule over Hindus. It was the Mughal from Turkey, who did so. Instead, like the way Pakistanis are treated in the Arab countries today, the converted Muslims were treated like second class Muslims – almost like Hindus – by the Mughals. Almost akin to ‘man is what he thinks’, it’s strange that the people who called themselves Indians just 70 years ago now regard invaders like Ghori as their heroes, are closer to the Middle East and see India as the ultimate enemy!

But then, there is more to its ways than just ingrained hostility.

Being the most, or perhaps the only trusted institute in corruption ridden Pakistan, without popular resentment, the army takes a lion’s share of the nation’s budget. It’s elite, not only control various army regiments but the country’s 50 commercial entities too. There is a network of people which includes both army and civilian, that benefits from those franchises. With dependency thus glaring like the sun rays on earthlings, even the army chief alone cannot go against the mass interest. May be, Musharraf’s abrupt departure from Delhi talks is one of them.

How did this come about?

The  answer isn’t difficult though. Being a country that was surreptitiously created on the behest of the West to restrain USSR from reaching the southern seas and to keep India restrained through a split, but then overtly doing so under the stewardship of Jinnah – who just wanted to be the first executive of a country – Pakistan had to bring areas with different ethnicities, cultures and languages to form an artificial nation. That too hurriedly before Jinnah’s TB induced early death! Disunity was real and Pakistan had the need for unity right at the start.

Despite Jinnah not knowing written Urdu, Pak had to enforce the elite alone understood artificial language Urdu. This at least created an uneasy common language, right at the start. And conversion of Sanskrit worded Hindu written national anthem to a Muslim written Persian worded one, did help. But then, like the taking out of local languages (Punjabi, Sindhi etc.) from its schools, subsequent annexation of an independent Baluchistan that added land, added disunity too. Pakistan cried out for unity and an external enemy, as has always been done for political needs, would solve its internal problems. While a Hindu India gave a default enemy that it made sure interred into its school texts to create a ‘man is what he thinks’ character, it needed to put that into action to get more. Incidentally a conglomerate of a week Nehru, a slow maharaja and a quick Pak army brought about half of Kashmir and the needed convincing cause for hostility. But then, with India’s reaction being inert at best, it needed more. While the vocal minority in Kashmir infused life into the needed hostility, almost producing a golden egg laying goose ,’We morally support Kashmiri people’s struggle’, brought about the needed perennial animosity.

With the threat thus confirmed, unlike for Nepal, Bhutan or Sri Lanka, Pakistan needed a defense force; and that too continually. With the external enemy thus guaranteed, its army’s prestige and need was guaranteed internally too. With guys graduating from school with an anti India anti Hindu thought, creating fighters wasn’t that hard.

That wasn’t enough though. Having created the defense need and a trusted institution, cash needs of the army was understood and people didn’t mind a lion’s share of the budget reserved by the army. Being congenitally involved in its creation, and with the purpose of making Pak strong militarily, West’s aid wasn’t far. As if duty bound, latter supplied the hardware. The profiting Pak’s elite were just lucky. And when the soviets descended on Afghanistan, their luck ascended. Almost like cheap Chinese goods, Taliban flooded the land of the Bamyan Buddha.

But then, after finishing off the Godless ones (communist Russia) the Taliban turned their guns towards the God’s message distorting ones (Christian USA). The great Satan needed Pak’s help again. The elite’s luck seemed to increase by the day. As brilliantly as less religious leaders use religious zealots for their mundane gain, its elite created religious Jihadists to use as pawns. In fact, when a pork and alcohol consuming, prayer disliking, Mullah disliked, fully westernized Gujarati Ismaili Jinnah could amazingly use Muslims to muster Pakistan albeit with the blessing of the British, its elite could surely use religious zealots to die for them too. In fact, yes, Ambani’s Indian stock share valued at more than Pakistan’s total stock market may not be surprising, its machinery creating Jihadists as a product, using them in the eastern and the western fronts pleasing both the West and its people, and then killing them with impunity – is certainly so.

Despite being corrupt, the British had mustered huge respect from the locals. Similarly being seen as less corrupt in the land where corruption is a culture, and having seen to have done so much for the country the army is revered in Pakistan. So much so that, an army takeover may be frowned upon outside but not inside its borders. When the US cleaned its showing teeth and passed a law to automatically stop aid if the Pak army took over, it showed its own showing teeth. As ingeniously as hiding Bin laden in front of its own barrack, it simply elected a subordinate prime minister. Airing that, although, ‘whom to talk to in Pak’ is cited for the talk lethargy in India, there is more to the futility of talks than meets the eyes.

Yes, with it offering a trouble-free existence of a newly formed nation, lucrative hardware from the West, an elating prestige from the locals, control of political and economic institutions of the country without a revolt, an un-opposing dependent network of beneficiaries and the fulfillment of religio – ideological emotions, and its absence giving a fear of being irrelevant ;Pakistan simply cannot afford to prefer peace. Thus, while its hostility as an engraved national policy is perfectly natural, if natural  emotion is let loose it will want to see Kashmir, if not the whole of India burning. It is such that even if whole of Kashmir (including independence seekers) is offered to Pak for peace, it will reject it – lest it be another Baluchistan anyway. It will rather take 95% of the state and continue its struggle for the remaining 5%

But Why Does The US Support Pakistan?

With India being the cause of hostility and America the supplier of its defense, almost fooling both and treating Jihadis like a factory product, it recycles (forms, uses and kills) the latter with impunity. In doing so, its elite benefit all the way. But then, USA is neither innocent nor unaware of this double role.

America befriends Pakistan to do the dirty work of flushing out Islamic fundamentalists from that area. But then, a country that knows all the eastern terrorist training camps and was able to sniff out Bin Laden from under its army’s nose, rather offers Pakistan military hardware like F-16. Surely, F- 16s are for wars and not for flushing out terrorists. What makes America do so? Why do Americans like ordinary Pakistanis, become the victims of the Pakistani propaganda?

The answer is simple. If not the American taxpayers and the Pakistani poor, elite from the two countries certainly win. The modes-operandi isn’t hard either. While the US siphons part of its tax payer’s money to its buddy Pakistan as an aid for fighting the jihadists, as if completing the loop Pakistan returns it back by buying its military hardware. Both countries seem to win. However, with the payment returning to the American elite who have multiple states in the arms industry and not the public; the elite benefit, unaware voting public lose.

Pakistani public don’t get much either. But in a land that cherished Sr Bhutto’s ‘we will eat grass but get the Atom Bomb’, the imported hardware certainly enhances the pride of all Pakistanis in relation to India with a, ‘we will beat India’ feeling. But, unlike the poor, its elite enjoy major kickbacks too. Therefore, almost saying ‘Elite of the two countries unite’ both beneficiaries would not say no to its continuation. While this union explains the chronicity in dealing with a bunch of terrorists in its territory despite the advanced technology, aid to enhance the unhindered animosity towards India needs more words. Yes Pakistan at times gets the backfire (terrorist attacks) but the elite remain unscathed. They instead get an opportunity to broadcasts ‘we are the victims of terrorism’.

It’s not that the West’s fear of USSR’s expansion into the southern seas alone that made it split India by eulogizing Jinnah and sacrificing Edwina/Mountbatten duo; parallel to the Hindu phobia in the Western academia brought about by India’s past glory, it feared an unwanted global competition from a united Hindu India too. Almost as a double whammy, while the partition weakened that India as a future power, the raising of sentiments of hostility even brought about two military hardware buyers! For Pakistan clearly yes but even for the US, Pakistan has to remain intact and strong, remain hostile to India and has to keep on buying arms. It knows all, but lets things happen.

In this context, Hilary’s ‘You can’t have two types of snakes in your back yard’ and Obama’s ‘seek urgent action against the Mumbai attackers’ are the showing teeth. In fact, despite the deaths of its own citizens in the Mumbai attack it says ‘We will not let down the integrity of Pakistan’ – as biting teeth. And of course for the ‘oldest democracy’ in the world, Pak’s integrity is much more important in the bite than the rapes and deaths of many in Baluchistan.

Of course the US voters want peace, but with the elected rulers merging with the elite in the elite/public split capitalist country, it’s the elite who decide; and Hillary or Trump’s victory matters less. So, for Trump, Pak could easily be what Guantanamo was for Obama. Therefore, unlike its inclusion in Kuwait’s banned list, the exclusion of Pakistanis in the banned list of the fundamentalist disliking Trump comes with an arrow airing just that.

The Kashmir obsession and nuclear bogey: An open letter to Arundhati Roy

0

Today I came across an article by the liberal godmother Arundhati Roy. The very first line of the article says “Reckless air strikes by India” and then went on to talk about how the air strikes have undone the hard work of the last 70 years by Indian leaders to make Kashmir a bilateral issue and how these strikes have internationalized the issue as the both the states are nuclear powers and thus the world nations would be compelled to intervene to avoid a nuclear war. She then goes on to talk about how Pulwama attack is just another chapter in “bloody Kashmir independence saga” and how Modi has emboldened these terrorists to “control the fate of India and South East Asia”. She then rants about how India is crushing the Kashmir independence struggle despite fighting for her own against Britishers. How “empty theatrics” of Surgical Strikes and Air Strikes are nothing but plot for hyper-nationalist movies and are moves to win elections.

My first reaction after reading this was that in few sentences, how brilliantly she justified and praised the pusillanimous policy of Indian leaders in last 70 years and simultaneously suggested that the current no-nonsense approach is dangerous, jingoistic and wrong. I wonder how people like her are even regarded as “experts” on Kashmir. Forget the obvious hatred for Modi and Indian state for a moment here but even a consistent observer of Kashmir situation in last three decades would tell how flawed her assertions are.

She argues that the attack is “just another chapter in Kashmir Independence struggle”. How did she conclude that? Just because the attack happened in Kashmir? Just because the target was defense forces? How convenient, simplistic and way off the mark! The attack has been conducted by JeM trained terrorist. JeM, unlike Hijbul Mujahideen, does not fight for Kashmir’s independence. Its stated ideology is to wage Jihad against Infidels and non-believers of Islam and establish an Islamic rule. Even the terrorist who carried out the attack stated clearly in his video “this attack is against the cow piss drinkers”. How did she see Kashmir Independence struggle in this statement is beyond the comprehension skills of my human brain. If the fight is for Kashmir Independence then why is it not being fought in the POK? Why Islam is being used to brainwash local youths to wage Jihad? And why have the attacks being carried out in different parts of the country including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Gujarat, Varanasi, Delhi, Bihar and others?

Can somebody explain me how Kashmir issue has been internationalized because of the Air Strikes? Not a single world leader has mentioned Kashmir either while condemning the terrorist attack or while praising the Indian action on terrorist camps across International Border. Not a single word has come out by any of the world leaders regarding the possibility of a nuclear war. But it seems she is hell bent upon reminding the world that how India should not act against terrorism and accept its fate as the perpetrators have nuclear arms.

The truth of the matter is Kashmir Independence struggle has ended long back. Now what are we seeing in Kashmir is nothing but Islamic terror in the name of Jihad and Ghazwa-e-Hind. It is another bloody chapter in the history of cowardly terrorist attacks this country has seen on her soul. These people would like you to believe that terror attacks are happening only because of Kashmir and if we can solve Kashmir problem (read: removing it from India’s map) we would get rid of this problem. They want to keep the Kashmir bogey on to justify terrorists’ and Pakistan’s barbaric acts.

Their tactics is plain and clear. Keep saying Kashmir is a disputed land and wants independence from Indian rule. Justify terrorist acts in the name of Kashmir Independence struggle. Keep shielding Pakistan from any questions and responsibilities. Keep on harping on talks and peaceful resolution. Keep this cycle going. It is easier for them to spread their propaganda and keep the Terrorism Industry going when a friendly Govt. is in power and that’s why Narendra Modi and BJP are the enemies who have to be removed at any cost.

I say Terrorism Industry with great responsibility. We need to understand what is happening here. We have a rouge army which has found a country with over 200 million people taken partitioned away from their roots and culture looking for something larger to associate themselves with. Every human being wants to be associated with something larger than itself, that’s why millions are sports fans, nationalists, social reformers, philosophers and thinkers or associated with religion. With such a big pool of people, it is not difficult to turn just a handful of them into zealots, extremists and terrorists ready to fight in the name of Islam with the support of the state system controlled by the army.

With a constant manpower ensured, funds are collected from all over the world through different means to support them in their activities. More the funds, more the acts; More the acts, more the funds. This ecosystem cannot be sustained without keeping the disputed issues alive where these groups operate under the garb of freedom struggle, or establish Islamic State, or to get rid of Infidels. That is where these activists, intellectuals, thinkers and apologists come into picture. Their job is to make sure that the pot keeps boiling and disputes remain disputes. You would see these people always be part of the problem and never the solution. So while the world burns, these masterminds and their cabal sit pretty on the top of money pile with a glass full of wine.

And now they have found themselves in a World where there are leaders who have the resolve to fight against this industry and defeat it to the end. We would be able to get rid of most of the terrorism in the World if we can defeat the Pakistan army and end this state occupation and bring back the people to their roots of being Sindhi, Pushto, Balochis, Punjabis, a part of the larger Indian culture. It is India, the biggest victim of terrorism, who has to fight this holy war against terrorism while others might/might not support.

The world is busy quibbling over their own interests and discussing the “definition of terrorism” while the world burns ever so faster in front of them. India has finally realized that it cannot wait anymore for the world to come together. Through Surgical Strikes and Air Strikes, we have announced to the world that we will fight back against what we consider terrorism perpetrated on our soil by ignoring the LOC or IB if required. And the world has stood up and supported us wholeheartedly in our resolve. And that is biggest achievement of these Strikes. No longer can the factory keeps on producing the Jihadis and keep attacking us without any consequences. We have raised the costs for planning any attack on Indian soil. We have not only called the Nuclear Bluff of the Rouge army but have also shown them their place.

No longer will this big ancient civilization would be bullied by a petty, immoral gang of goons. No longer we will allow the supporters of terrorism to teach us tolerance, peace which we have taught to the world. No longer we would be sitting ducks for the enemies of humanity to come and strike us whenever they want without any consequences. No longer will we allow these peacenicks to shield the nemesis of terrorism. And since a large part of this credit goes to the leadership of Narendra Modi, that’s why he is the target, he is the enemy. He has to be brought down when the whole world is looking at him to take charge in this decisive battle against the common enemy. And that my friends is the real reason behind such articles. The sad part is many of our fellow Indians, in their hate towards Modi, fall for this propaganda without understanding their intentions and become pawn in the battle against their own nation.

Where has it gone wrong? – Why liberals are against India

0

In the last 4.5 years, there have been many times when the issue related to Nationalism became the focal point, which was expected when a Strong Nationalist Govt is at the helm of the affairs.
We had the JNU case where people were forced to decide, whether harboring the intentions of dividing India, whether the demand for independent Kashmir, whether declaring a SC convicted terrorist as a “Martyr” and consider its death sentence as “Judicial Killing”, amounts to being Anti-National or not.

We had the SC ruling to make it mandatory for cinema halls to play National Anthem before every movie. People were forced to decide whether standing up for National Anthem should be a matter of choice or not and whether is should be considered Anti-National if you choose not to.

We had the cases where refusing to say “Bharat Mata ki Jai” or “Vande Matram” were considered as “free speech” and “secularism”.

As a common citizen, I always thought that no matter what political side we fall on while making the choices in all these cases, we would always agree on one issue “Terrorism and Pakistan”. This has been one issue since 1947 which has always brought us together and make us stand as one. I always thought that this would be one issue opposition parties, pliant media, so-called intellectuals and activists would stand with the common citizen of India and not make us choose side whether supporting “Terrorism” is Anti-National or not.

Terrorism does not differentiate between political ideologies, religion or nationalists. It affects each and every citizen equally, or at least it should. I thought only Pakistan differentiates between “Good Terrorism” and “Bad Terrorism”, we Indians would condemn terrorism in every form and would resolve to hit back whenever and wherever the situation arises.

But, boy o’ boy, was I wrong!

In the last 4.5 years, liberals and opposition has proved that their “Modi Hate” is much profound then fight against terrorism. In 2016, when the Surgical Strikes happened, it signaled a tectonic shift in India’s policy towards terrorism and Pakistan’s policy of “bleeding India with a thousand cuts”. More than the damages that were inflicted, it was a signal that India would not just remain a sitting duck and would increase the cost for terrorists and its handlers to carry out such ghastly form of violence.

BJP and Narendra Modi have taken political mileage out of it, no one can deny that. But don’t they have every right to showcase this tectonic shift in policy as their achievement because India had followed the same policy for last 30 years irrespective of the Govt in power. We did not react when Parliament attacks happened, neither when Mumbai attacks happened or when innumerous attacks happened in different parts of the country whether Delhi, Hyderabad, Gujarat, Varanasi, Bihar or others. But this Govt showed the political will to make that policy change and take the “Bull by its horns”.

However, the “Modi Haters” cannot, even in their dreams, give him credit for anything. The bashing of Surgical Strikes started right from Rahul Gandhi to the lowest pawn in the “Modi Hater” gang. Just like the whitewashing of the history of last 70 years or even before to suit one family, the whitewashing of the achievements of Surgical Strikes were tried. Forgotten the facts that terrorists did not dare to carry out any planned attack on Indian soil for more than 2 years, that the world community praised and supported India for such a huge policy change, that a “new normal” was created while dealing with terrorism and that India announced to the world and Pakistan that it will not allow terrorism to go unpunished. All this does not matter. What matters is the “hate for Modi”.

Despite all the anti-India behavior that we have seen for last 4.5 years, what was on display in these last few weeks since Pulawama Attack has forced me to ask this question “Is supporting or emboldening terrorism would also not be considered Anti-national”?

We had the biggest terrorism in the Kashmir history. We were confronted with a new form of attack on Indian soil. The blood of every Indian was boiling and asking the same question we had been asking for last 40 years “Kab tak?”. Despite the obvious attempts to whitewash terrorist’s act or shift the focus away from terrorism, it seemed that India is united this time. But look at what happened since then in last couple of weeks.

We have had the elected CM of a state insinuate that the Central Govt perpetrated attack on its own Forces! and repeated multiple times by different stooges. We have been told numerous times that the air strikes were done only for political reasons. We have seen India (target Modi) being blamed for attacking its own citizens and for being war hungry. We have the elected CM asking what was achieved through the strikes and demands for proof have already started, despite the Air Force Chief, himself stating “the objectives of the strikes were achieved successfully”.

We have listened the former PM of the country blaming India and Pakistan equally for “mad rush” and “escalation”! Just Pause and think for a moment here. India attacked the terrorist camps, Pakistan army in response tried to attack our military establishments and by sheer bad luck, were able to capture our brave fighter pilot who they were forced to return within 2 days. How is India wrong in all this? What is it that we could have done differently? Not carry out the air strikes at all? Or not defend our territory when Pakistan F16s attacked? What exactly is the former PM trying to say that India should follow the old policy of his to “strongly condemn and after a few months, start the talks again” thereby insulting the bravehearts and victims of all those attacks?

We have seen Imran Khan being hailed as the hero and people praising him so much for the “Peace Gesture” that it seems they would want to see him getting the next “Noble Peace Prize”. We have been told that it is India which is being irresponsible, not by the world, but by our own people, some of which we elect as our representatives.

How exactly did we reach to this state from Pulwama attack just 2 weeks back! How did we forget our “fallen braves” in just 2 weeks! I am not able to believe what am I seeing in front of my eyes. When the discussions should be about how another “new normal” of crossing the International Border has been created while dealing with terror, how can we corner Imran Khan and Pakistan further, what should be the road ahead, how India has been able to associate heavy cost with every terrorist act, the change in the position of the World, a big diplomatic coup by India in OIC; we have discussions like “No to War”, “India is the aggressor”, “Pakistan’s Imran Khan is a statesman and Peace messiah”, “call for deescalation”, “why is Modi silent on the capture of the Indian fighter pilot”, “loopholes in our security and intelligence” etc. etc.

Again I ask “how did we land up here?” Again I ask “Now would we be forced to decide whether supporting terrorism is anti-national or just freedom of speech?”

A grand salute to all the liberals, intellectuals, journalists, politicians who in their quest for “Modi hatao”, have managed to showcase that even emboldening terrorism is not off limits when it comes to “Modi Hate”.

Can an Indian EVM be hacked during an election?

0

Indian elections are a celebration of our democracy, though it ends up being a costly celebration. Indian elections are unique in the sense that along with deciding the fate of the nation and it’s politicians it also gets to decide the credibility of EVM, the Electronic Voting Machines being used. If Congress wins the election, EVMs are not tampered with, but when BJP wins EVMs lose their credibility. Congress and it’s supporters are sure it’s tampered with. How else can Congress and the Nehru/Gandhi family lose? Don’t they have the sole ownership of the country and the right to rule forever?

Now coming to the question of whether they can be tampered with. I am an engineer with specialisation in computer science. With great difficulty I cleared 3 papers in electronics by just getting the passing marks. So I don’t understand how an EVM works and have no freaking idea if it could be tampered. My guess is as good as anybody who has gone through materials available in public domain.

So what’s the point of writing this blog, you ask. I am not going to make a case that EVMs cannot be tampered. My argument is just that people cannot tamper an EVM and get away with it. It can be figured out easily. Now hows that possible, you ask. Through VVPAT slips, I say. So what’s VVPAT, you would ask. Let’s see.

It stands for Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail. The machine looks like this.

Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail machine

It’s now mandatory to use VVPAT with EVMs in every election. So how does this work.

Let’s say I vote for Party A during an election. Once I vote the VVPAT machine attached to the EVM will generate a small slip with the details of the candidate I voted, for me to verify it. Once it’s verified the slip is stored within the VVPAT machine and cannot be taken out by the voter. Similarly for every vote that’s polled the VVPAT machine will store a slip with the candidate details who was voted for and as mentioned before the voter can verify if the correct candidate was voted for.

During counting if the election agent of a candidate is not convinced with the results they can demand for counting of the slips from the VVPAT machines to confirm the results. That’s how you figure out if a voting machine has been tampered with.

For e.g. if the EVM shows 100 seats for Party A and 30 seats for Party B and if Party B’s election agent thinks this can’t be correct they can demand that the VVPAT slips from that machine be counted and if the counting shows different numbers than the EVM it would be clear that the EVM is tampered with.

Now, going briefly back to the question on whether EVMs could be tampered. As I said I can’t be absolutely sure that they cannot be tampered as I don’t know how they work, but I believe till now they have not been tampered with. The reasons are:

1. Though EC has multiple times demonstrated that EVMs actually work fine not even once has anybody proved it otherwise.

2. Recently there was an event in London where the organizers claimed to show how the EVMs could be tampered with. Leave alone showing a practical demo they couldn’t even theoretically explain how it could be done.

3. Around 2 years back EC called for an EVM hackathon challenge. Nobody, not even parties and people who consistently talk about how BJP wins elections only due to EVM tampering came forward to even try tamper an EVM.

To me EVM tampering is just a fairytale being spread around by people who are not ready to agree that the psyche of the people on ground is much different from what they think it is or it should be.

Note: I wouldn’t change my opinion on EVMs untill somebody proves it can be tampered with. Till then not even a BJP loss will make me change it.

Democratic Process in Kashmir – What the recent crackdown in the valley suggest

0

I remember a couple of years back, while having a heated discussion on Naxalism, I had asked the other side “Every movement/struggle has an objective, when naxalism started, it had a certain objective which resonated with the people for a long time, but that objective is neither relevant nor followed by the naxalists anymore, so on this day, what is the objective of this movement?” Not many people responded but one individual got up and said in unequivocal terms “Aazadi”.

I mentioned the above incident because exactly the same can be said about the current situation in Kashmir. Politicians (I choose to use this word rather than leaders) in the valley, due to their myopic, selfish, short term interests, have created a situation where they fight elections under the Indian constitution, accept hefty economic packages from the Indian Government, enjoy their hearts out when they are in power and play the independence politics when out of power. And this cycle has repeated itself for 30 long years wherein two political dynasties emerged to share power every alternate election with the required support from the local Congress leadership to share the perks and benefits that comes by being in power.

While discussing the Kashmir problem, people from other parts of India discuss Pakistan involvement, Delhi’s mistakes, separatists influence, terrorists role and Kashmiri Pandits plight, but one key factor they exclude which is central to the local Kashmiri is the role of local political leaders. To understand this factor, we need to understand the demographics of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. J&K state is comprised of 4 different regions:

Ladakh (including Leh)- roughly 50% of the total area with about 3 lakh population, Jammu – roughly 22% of the total area with about 55 lakh population, Kashmir – roughly 15% of the total area with about 70 lakh population, POK – roughly 12% of the total area with about 40 lakh population.

If you follow the state of affairs in J&K state, you would know that Jammu and Ladakh are completely integrated with the rest of India and there are no independence demands in these parts of the state which means more than 70% of the state and 40% of the population do not harbor any separatists thoughts. In fact there have been demands on the ground to carve out a new state for these two regions to meet the aspirations of the people from these regions as they believe their interests get overshadowed by the situation prevailing in the Valley.

Now coming to the other two regions, being under Pakistani control, POK does not play a direct role in the local Kashmir politics but plays a major role indirectly through terror heavens, launchpads, training infrastructure, etc. Why doesn’t the Indian State nominate MPs from POK to assert its rightful claim on the region is beyond my limited understanding capability. Kashmir, on the other hand, being the most populous region of the state and being the center of the problem, enjoys the disproportionate attention not only in the political course but also in the national conscious. The neglect of the Jammu and Ladakh region among the general populace of the country can only be compared to the neglect meted out to NE states before 2014. NE has finally got its due but Jammu & Ladakh are still hoping “Apna time aayega!”

Coming to the political discourse in the last 30 years since the infamous rigging of the elections in 1980s which triggered the mass insurgency in the state, subsequently nurtured and fanned by Pakistan. J&K assembly under the Indian Constitution has 111 seats out of 24 are in POK which remain empty. Out of the remaining 87 seats, 46 are in Kashmir, 37 in Jammu and 4 in Ladakh. So to reach the magical mark of 44, political parties have no other option but to register victory in the Kashmir region.

Now, there is a famous quote “never underestimate a politician’s desire to be in power”. Politicians in the state, particularly in Valley, have opted for the easiest way to sway the votes towards them, by portraying the party in the state government as Indian sympathizer since it is operating under Indian constitution and thereby, being anti-Kashmiri to polarize the voters among Indians and Kashmiris, thereby creating a distinction between them. And both the dynasties as well as the Congress is guilty of using this cheap brand of divisive politics to win the seat of power.

These politicians, having found the unicorn issue, never bothered about moving to politics of development, performance or integration. They never raised issues about roads, jobs, poverty, local industries, corruption, education, electricity, water, agriculture, tourism, hospitals, and many other issues related to a common kashmiri. Just play the separatists card and ride back to power with the help of hurriyats, Jamaat-e-Islami, and others. Separatist forces enjoyed the fruits of power without ever fighting the elections irrespective of the party in the government. This entire political discourse created an ecosystem of politicians, separatists, terrorists, frontal organization of terrorists, which thrived on the bogey of Kashmir Independence and Self rule.

They never bothered to inform the Kashmiri people what is it that will change if they get independence? Will they get better roads? Better Infrastructure? Better Jobs? Better amenities? Better governance? And who is stopping them from doing any of it now? Aren’t they in power and most of the local administration comes under their control? Forget about these, they never bothered to explain their people whether peace would be achieved after independence? Will Pakistan stop abetting terrorism after independence?

Growing up listening to the mainstream media discourse on J&K, I used to believe that the J&K leaders, unlike other politicians from India, are honest, moral and statesman with no corruption in J&K state. For me, J&K was a model state with just a small problem of convincing people how great the Indian democracy is which I felt should not be a big task for these honest, dynamic politicians from the state as what is it that the state would be able to do differently if independent which they can’t do while being under the Indian Union. Later after reading and understanding the issue in depth, after my misconception shattered to pieces, I asked myself just one question “Indian Goverment provides the maximum economic package to J&K state, where does this money go?”.

The political game being played by these dynasties and parties can be gauged from the fact that since 1951, the assembly elections have always been held on time apart from the single instance after the massive rigging and militancy uprising in the state after 1987. Same is the case with general elections since 1967 when they were held for the first time. Contrast that with municipal and panchayat elections which have been held only a minuscule number of times that too with marred with issues like violence, killing of candidates, boycott calls by separatists and terrorists groups. When we can have peaceful assembly and general elections in the state with voting percentage in excess of 60-70%, why suddenly the situation changes in case of local body elections? How do we expect the local administration to work effectively when there are no representatives to address the administrative and governance challenges at the ground level?

This is nothing but an attempt to make sure that true democracy never flourishes in the state, democracy never reach the grassroots level, no new leaders emerge in the state politics so that the hegemony of the dynasties, politicians, separatists, terrorists remain unchallenged and the ecosystem thrives. For the first time in the history of Kashmir local elections were conducted in 2018 without any major incidents and with a decent voter turnout of around 30-40% with some places being much lower owning to multiple challenges.

We saw how these mainstream state political parties decided to boycott the elections! And now are desperately asking the central government to held the assembly elections as soon as possible. Irony died a million death! We also saw how many members of these parties called their bluff and parted their ways to fight the elections and be a part of the Indian Democratic process.

I believe 2019 will be a landmark year for the J&K state. I think Narendra Modi and the BJP have understood this political game being played in the state to maintain the hegemony of few. With the defense forces launching the final assault to free the valley from terrorists and on the back of the success of peaceful local election process, central government would be confident of conducting peaceful, free and fair assembly election in the coming months. And given the dominance of BJP in Jammu and Ladakh, new political leadership emerging due to local elections and increase in influence of Sajjad Lone, this election could very well end this political master game being played in the state for last 30 years. I, for one, is hoping for the same.

And it is in this context that we need to see the crackdown on separatists and the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, the frontal organization for Hizbul-Mujahideen. Seeing the response of the local populace towards the election process, center seems to be confident that this crackdown will not lead to mass protests in the state specially when the state is under Governor’s rule. The center has used the time wisely to fundamentally change the state politics and throw open the field to multiple aspirants rather than the closed gate democracy being followed previously.

There is a buzz in the Delhi corridors of power that Hurriyat will also be banned in the coming days. If center can bite this bullet and actually go through with this, it can go a long way in conducting a completely free and fair elections in J&K with no threats or fear. If center can actually pull this off, this can very well start a new chapter in the history of the state with dynastic politicians being shunted out and a new politics of aspirations and performance emerging in the state. Then and only then, can we start bridging the gaps between Kashmiris and the rest of the Indians. That would pave the way in solving the Kashmir Problem as true grassroot democracy is the only answer to the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.
